Exhibitor and visitor reaction to 10th PATS Sandown

The pet trade has given PATS Sandown a thumbs-up with exhibitors and visitors agreeing it has been one of the best shows in its 10-year history...

The pet trade has given PATS Sandown a thumbs-up with exhibitors and visitors agreeing it has been one of the best shows in its 10-year history.

Retailers from both the UK and overseas created a surge of activity over two days of business in the Surrey and Esher Halls at Sandown Park.

The show closed with visitors and exhibitors agreeing it had been a success, with the event delivering an unrivalled platform for the launch of hundreds of exciting pet product innovations.

The New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, was a busy area throughout the event, and retailers admitted they were spoiled for choice as they decided on which items to stock in their stores for the year ahead.

Exhibitors agreed the quality of visitors to their stands was exceptional, and there was a great degree of confidence being shown.

Forthglade’s head of sales Bill Kimberling said his company had experienced two brilliant days. “We’ve had a massive stack of orders for our products, and seen some very important people.”

Ken McKinnon, of K9 Dogwash, was in agreement, saying: “This has got to be one of the best shows I’ve experienced, and I’m very happy with the response. We’ve seen a good mix of big retail chains and independent retailers.”

Anco used PATS Sandown to unveil a complete re-brand of the company with exciting new packing wowing visitors to the company’s stand. “We targeted this year’s Sandown show to launch our re-branding and it has been very successful,” said Colin Maidment. “For us it has proved to be the perfect platform.”

The show was also a big occasion for Natures Menu, who used the event as the nationwide launch of their new True Instinct pet food brand, and

Peter Roy said the company had surpassed their orders target. “We’ve been flat out for the whole two days.”

SnuggleSafe won a New Product Award at last year’s Sandown show and the accolade helped to generate lots of interest in his products this year. Chris Kavallares said: “The response from visitors has been fantastic – I’m particularly impressed with the quality of enquiries,” while his wife Nicky commented: “This is the best and friendliest trade show I attend.”

Steve Lodge, of Hertford Shelving, said: “The show has fulfilled all my expectations. It’s the perfect place to meet new and old customers, and there is always a buzz about the place.”

And Suzanne Rothman, of Pet Munchies, reported good business on her stand with an impressive amount of orders taken. “This has been the best PATS Sandown ever. The quality of people we’ve met has been excellent, and I’ve even had an enquiry from a Russian distributor.”

Among the 37 exhibitors new to PATS Sandown were Wild Ocean Omega 3 Fish Snacks Ltd, trading as Woofs. “We found the show to be an ideal vehicle to introduce our new brand of fish snacks for dogs using fresh sustainable and ethically sourced fish products,” said managing director Stewart Irvine. “Thanks to PATS we have met representatives from various sectors of the industry and are very optimistic for our brand’s expansion.”

The mood amongst visitors was summed up by Claire Thomsett, a pet buyer at Bodle Bros, West Sussex, who said: “PATS Sandown is a very engaging show. Everyone is friendly and helpful. There was a great variety of products, and I found the stands to be enticing.”

Neil Reed, of Pet Stop, Isle of Wight, said: “This is the first time I’ve visited the show and I’m impressed with the diversity of all the products. Seeing all the ranges under one roof is great for independent retailers like us.”

According to Vicky Harrison, of Vicky’s Paws and Chores, Chichester, “PATS has a fantastic range of products. There is so much to see all under one roof.”

And Victor Brobyn, of The Pet Shop in Sittingbourne, said: “My focus was on sourcing new products and we’ve had a profitable day. There were some great retail ideas on many outstanding stands, which I will use in my shop.”

Glenn Hall, who runs a grooming business called Doggylocks, in West London, was on the lookout for pet products in his store and he wasn’t disappointed. “PATS is an amazing place, perfect for finding new stock. We’ve had a profitable day.”

Organiser Gordon Thomas said: “We’re proud to be celebrating our 10th anniversary of PATS at Sandown. We love running this exhibition and it’s great to hear that exhibitors and visitors have experienced a brilliant show, demonstrating that PATS is the show for serious buyers of pet products.”

Pooch & Mutt's revolutionary Tetra wet food launch

Pooch & Mutt’s new wet food range enforces the brand’s commitment to sustainably sourced, quality food and has the environment at its heart...

Pooch & Mutt’s new wet food range enforces the brand’s commitment to sustainably sourced, quality food and has the environment at its heart.

Innovative Tetra packs push the boundaries of pet food packaging - easy to use and made from 70% renewable resources, they are widely recyclable with a carbon footprint that is 80% lower a can. This is a key message for the new Tetras, as figures reveal over its lifetime, a tin can will be responsible for over three times as much carbon dioxide than a Tetra containing the equivalent. With focus on the environment, Pooch & Mutt's Tetra packs promise:

  • 100% recyclable
  • 92% of UK local authorities offer carton collection
  • 80% lower carbon footprint than a can
  • 50% lower carbon footprint than a pouch
  • 70% of the pack is made from renewable resources

"Ditch the can. Help the Planet" is the mantra for the revolutionary new product, with founder Guy Blaskey commenting: "We're very excited to be paving the way for more brands to "ditch the can". The tetra's show that you can bring fresh, high-quality ingredients to contribute to a happier, healthier planet as well as happier, healthier dogs."

Alongside environmental benefits, figures show that Tetra packs are also highly efficient during transportation, storage and in distribution, using 33% less space than a can. The outer box itself is the first design of its kind; mirroring the tetra pack in large form it offers more options for display.

The new range includes Turkey & Chicken, and Chicken & Ocean Fish. Both recipes use fresh, locally sourced ingredients including fresh fruits and vegetables. Free from grain, cereal and gluten, the wet foods contain no artificial colours or flavours and are formulated free from GM produce.

2018 is the start of something new for Naturediet Pet Foods Ltd. The British manufacturer of natural dog food have a new sales team in place, a major rebrand planned for September and new products in the pipeline.

The imminent change for the 42 year old business was evident at this years’ Crufts, where Naturediet unveiled a fresh new look for the brand to promote their range of 100% British made, feel good food for dogs.

Head of Marketing, Emily Cannon, said of the company’s recent exhibition “we were genuinely overwhelmed by the response from consumers at Crufts. It was a huge boost for the business and we’ve seen a very positive increase in demand for our lesser known lines, such as dry and treats."

“Crufts was the start of things to come for Naturediet and we will be unveiling a major new direction for the brand later in the year at PATS Telford. With the plans to overhaul the pack design of Naturediet products came the opportunity to innovate the format and overall presentation of our packaging, whilst retaining the quality and ethos of our foods. This is an immensely exciting time to be part of the business and our plans will revolutionise Naturediet’s wet food manufacturing capabilities.”

CEO Carol Orrow says “Over the last 12 months we have been reconnecting with our customers, providing increased levels of support and putting in place the foundations for significant changes and improvements. We have invested heavily in resource to provide excellent service to our independent retailers and wholesale partners."

The family run manufacturer, based in Norfolk, pride themselves on being a British manufacturer with strong ethical principles.

Carol continues to comment that “We’ve worked tirelessly over the last 4 years to ensure our manufacturing plant and procedures are exceptional, and we have huge capacity for growth over the coming years. Whilst focusing on both product and packaging innovation, we remain committed to producing honest, limited ingredient foods which genuinely benefit our dogs through high quality natural nutrition."

Remaining loyal to the pet specialist channel, Naturediet have appointed 3 regional business development managers to proactively develop and support the pet specialist channel in the UK.

The Naturediet range of wet, dry and semi-moist treats are all made to limited ingredient recipe of British sourced, human grade meats, fish, vegetables and easily digested carbohydrates.

To request a visit from a Business Development Manager, who can provide offers and new line listing incentives through their wholesale transfer order facility, please call 01362 822320 or email trade@naturediet.co.uk.

Anco's major re-branding a big success

Anco iaunched a complete re-brand of the company at PATS Sandown and Colin Maidment said visitors to the company's stand had loved the new look.

Anco iaunched a complete re-brand of the company at PATS Sandown and Colin Maidment said visitors to the company's stand had loved the new look.

Colin told Pet Trade Xtra: “We're trying to get across the provenance of our product and how good the quality of the raw materials and ingredients are.

"We've employed the biggest branding company in Scotland to help us, threebrand.  It's been a fantastic exercise. They’re a great bunch of guys and have had a lot of fun doing the photo shoots and coming up with the new 'Dogalogue" instead of a catalogue. It's been stressful but I've really enjoyed it.”

Colin told us that the new packaging comes from German.  "It is completely re-recyclable. We've been researching for four years, travelling all over Europe looking for the right packaging. We have been working with the German company for 18 months to get the right feel, the right quality and ecological benefits to it as well.  It's been a long process but it all comes to fruition on Tuesday next week.”

Will there be any different POS material?

"Yes, there are brand new display stands, new signage, new leaflets, new counter displays, there's new everything but the same good old quality ingredients inside the packaging.”

Will Anco remain focused on the treat sector?

"We specialise in 100% natural treats – we don't do anything but natural treats.  We're not going to get into raw foods, we will leave that to the raw food specialists.”

Is the raw food area helping you?

"Yes, because there has been such a big thing about raw food it has had a knock-on effect.  Not everybody's wanting to give them a raw chicken next or a raw ear so the dried one is the next best thing.”

Is there ever any problem with supply?

“There is always an issue with supply.  We have used the same supplier for the last 8 years.  They know the quality we are expecting in our bags.  I'd rather be out of stock than being in poor quality.  Some customers get quite annoyed sometimes, but I will not bring in poor quality.  If it's not the right product it doesn't come off the truck.

"There is nothing artificial in our products. We make sure we visit our production plants on a three-monthly basis and make sure all the production processes are kept to and we know the provenance of all the raw materials. Nobody else can do that.  All our natural treats also go through a pasteurisation process, they are air dried and then pasteurised so there is no bacteria in them at all. Nobody else does that. Hopefully with the new re-branding and the new packaging we can get that message across to the customer that they can trust us that we are using hand selected ingredients, we do make sure there is nothing artificial and I think we have achieved that.”

Would you say that independent retailers, pet shops, and garden centres are the lifeblood of your business?

"Absolutely the backbone to my business. They have supported me for the last 14 years and we will carry on supporting the independent trade absolutely 100% all the way through.  They literally are the backbone of Britain. Without them there is no pet industry.”

How does you see the future for high street pet shops?

"They have to start specialising. They will have to follow trends and set their own stall out.  They can't follow what the supermarkets are doing and expect to be there in six months or a year’s time.  They will have to look into the raw and natural and follow the trends.

"You get a fantastic following from your customer when you can spend time and speak to them about each individual dog’s issues. Then you'll always have that customer and they will follow you.

"I go to some of my pet shops to say hello and 95% of the stuff that is going through the tills is my products because it's all natural and because those pet shops are prepared to stand and speak to the customers.  So, whether it is food or treats it is so nice to watch that go through because you know the dog is getting good quality food and treats. That's what it's about, the dog and getting the best quality.”

Chuckit! partners with judging panel of pet industry pupstars for the Chuckit! Challenge 2018

Chuckit! is giving pet parents the opportunity to put their pet posts and pho-dog-graphy skills to the test once again with the return of the pupular Chuckit! Challenge competition...

As research conducted by Barkpost shows that owners post about their dogs on social media six times per week, Chuckit! is giving pet parents the opportunity to put their pet posts and pho-dog-graphy skills to the test once again with the return of the pupular Chuckit! Challenge competition. In a pawsome new twist for 2018 though, the brand is this time enlisting the help of some of the internet’s most influential furry faces.

Drawing great paw-ticipation from dog owners across the UK in 2016 and 2017 with over 1,000 total entries to date, the brand is this year looking to exceed its number of entrants again, while once again offering a host of fetch-tastic prizes. Courtesy of Forest Holidays, the crowned canine will get the chance to put their paws up and relax in a luxury log cabin on their £1,000 dog-friendly holiday in their chosen UK location.

Will Baggaley, UK brand manager for Chuckit! comments: “After the success of the Chuckit! Challenge in the last two years, we wanted to give our fans another opportunity to take part in the competition, and this time show off their dog’s skills in front of an amazing panel of hand-picked judges.”

This year, dog owners will have until the Summer to submit their dog’s most impressive action shots with their favourite Chuckit! toys to the brand’s Facebook and Twitter pages, using the hashtag #ChuckitChallenge. From there, entries will be judged by a selection of pet industry and social media pupstars, who hold an impressive combined social following of over 60,000: Finn for Change, the West Midlands Fire Dogs, Kim O’Meara from K9 Magazine, Dogs on Adventures and Bertie Lakeland.

TV favourite, pet influencer and veteran police dog hero, Finn for Change boasts an impressive 17,000 social media followers and is no stranger to being on camera with recent stints on National TV.

Owner Dave has revealed what he is looking for in the winning shot from this year’s canine competitors: “We are thrilled to have been asked to be on the judging panel for this year’s Chuckit! Challenge as myself and Finn are huge fans of Chuckit!. Finn likes to think of himself as the ultimate Chuckit! enthusiast, so we definitely know what we are looking out for and hope to see some creative and high energy shots of dogs who look like they are really enjoying themselves!”

Premium natural supplements company, Lintbells, is at PATS Sandown on stand E7. As well as showcasing the whole portfolio of products, the company is offering a buy four get one free promotion to all trade customers.

Retail Business Development Executive, Emma Walker and Retail Channel Lead Terri-Ann Rowe, will be on the stand to answer any questions about YuMOVE, YuMEGA and all its other products, from customers old and new.

Terri-Ann says the supplements category is flourishing and Lintbells is looking forward to an exciting year: “We have more new products in the pipeline and I’d encourage retailers to make contact with us so that we can keep them in the loop.

"If retailers don’t already stock our range then they can come along and we can recommend a core portfolio that will allow them and their customers to experience the difference Lintbells makes. At our special promotion price, the investment is lower and retailers can make excellent returns.

"It will also ensure they are on our radar when the next innovation is ready to hit the shelves.”

She continued: “Those retailers who are already growing their supplements category with Lintbells, should also pop over for a chat. We’d love to hear their feedback.”

In recent years Lintbells has revitalised the brand with new packaging, continued to improve product quality by sourcing ingredients such as its unique ActivEase Green Lipped Mussel from specific bays as well as adding new lines such as YuCALM Dog.

Vital Pet Trade Specialist has made a big impact at PATS this year, providing an enhanced experience for retailers. The stand in the main Surrey Hall (J7) has doubled in size and the company is also taking over the Grandstand View overlooking the racecourse, where it will be joined by leading manufacturers offering exclusive promotions.

In the main hall, retailers are able to view exclusive products only distributed by Vital in the UK. This includes market leading brands from the US and the first chance to see revitalised products within Vital’s own-brand Mayfield range, including chews, toys, bowls and bird feeds. Only available to the independent pet trade, Mayfield products can’t be purchased anywhere else. The team is also keen to share news of the many improvements and innovations that have been put in place over recent months to allow the company to deliver a better service to retailers.

The Vital Grandstand is a completely new area for the company. Existing customers can expect to receive their own personal invitation soon, giving them access to some exclusive activities. There’s even a free goodie bag on entry.

In the grandstand, Vital has partnered with top manufacturers to offer fantastic promotional deals that won’t be available from any other wholesaler. All orders will be processed on the day so delegates can bank on their delivery for high demand promotions.

Selected products will be available at clearance prices as Vital clears out the warehouse to make way for incoming new lines. There are also complimentary refreshments to top up energy levels during a long day at the show.

Exciting toys set for major launch at PATS Sandown

Global pet product expert, PetSafe is taking the opportunity to unveil a number of innovative new lines in its FroliCat and Busy Buddy range at this year’s PATS.

Global pet product expert, PetSafe is taking the opportunity to unveil a number of innovative new lines in its FroliCat and Busy Buddy range at this year’s PATS.

The ever-popular FroliCat range has been expanded with two new automatic cat teasers, FroliCat CHATTER and FroliCat CHEESE. FroliCat CHATTER™ is a self-righting ball with a moving golden bird teaser attachment, while FroliCat™ CHEESE™ offers cats a fun peek-a-boo game as two mice pop out of each side of a Swiss block of cheese.

Building on the success of the existing Busy Buddy range, PetSafe® is also introducing three new and exciting Busy Buddy toys: Busy Buddy Ultra Super Sub, Busy Buddy Ultra Stratos and Busy Buddy® Ultra Woofer.

The fun Busy Buddy Ultra Super Sub features knobbled nylon “buns” sandwiching rubber spacers and two ultra-thick bacon flavoured treat rings. Designed to hold a dog’s interest for a longer period of time, the treat rings spin on their posts allowing very little surface area for dogs to grip on to. Designed with determined chewers in mind Busy Buddy® Ultra Stratos holds two ultra-thick bacon flavoured treat rings, as well as a textured rubber centre for extra chewing satisfaction. Busy Buddy® Ultra Woofer is another durable toy that turns destructive chewing into positive playtime for a longer time. The extra-wide ends of the Woofer protect a single ultra-thick bacon flavoured treat ring, making it more difficult for the dog to grip on the treat ring.

International Marketing Director, Angela Critchley says: “We always enjoy exhibiting at PATS and this year is no exception. We're looking forward to launching our new products and getting feedback from customers. The Busy Buddy collection of toys are exceptionally popular with both dogs and their owners and help re-direct potential destructive behaviours. The FroliCat range is specially designed to provoke a cat’s natural hunting instinct, consequently encouraging movement and promoting overall wellbeing.”

Pets at Home stops sale of rabbits during Easter Period

Workshops for children are to run alongside Pets at Home’s decision to stop the sale of rabbits and adoption of rabbits at its 440 stores during this Easter Period...

Parents are being given the opportunity to take their children to a series of fun, free workshops at Pets at Home this Easter.

Attendees can get up close and personal and learn some fun facts about small furry animals, including rabbits. Pets at Home have also announced a promotional partnership for the workshops   with Sony Pictures on the new movie PETER RABBIT™, which launches in UK theatres on 16 March.

These workshops will run alongside Pets at Home’s decision to stop the sale and adoption of rabbits at all of its 440-plus stores over the Easter bank holiday weekend. The workshops are designed to educate and inform future pet owners on the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Each year, customer interest in rabbits increases at Easter due to their association with this time of year. Customers will not be able to buy or adopt a rabbit from Good Friday to Easter Monday but are invited to take part in these free workshops over the Easter holidays and weekend.

Peter Pritchard, CEO of Pets at Home, said: “Our decision to stop the sale and adoption of rabbits during Easter has been made to educate potential owners on the importance of responsible pet ownership.

“Our informative workshops will help families understand what’s involved in being a responsible pet owner. What’s more they’re also a fun and free way to learn about small furry animals and rabbits during the holidays.”

Pets at Home’s workshops aim to promote awareness of rabbit welfare and help prospective rabbit owners make an informed decision about the long-term commitment that comes with owning a pet.

To reinforce this message, the My Pet Pals Easter activity club will be held from 24th March to 15th April at Pets at Home stores throughout the holidays, where fun, interactive activities will educate the next generation of pet owners on how to care for small furry animals, responsibly.

The store team will be on hand to share their knowledge, quizzing the children on pet care and the welfare needs of small furry animals including rabbits - shelter, food and water, good health, appropriate company and the right living environment.

To find your nearest workshop, visit www.petsathome.com/workshops

Pets at Home has also shared a list of considerations for prospective rabbit owners:

  • Rabbits are sociable creatures that can make wonderful pets for experienced pet owners, and are naturally social, intelligent and inquisitive animals
  • Rabbits can become friendly and confident around people if gently handled from a young age
  • Housing will take up a significant area of your house and garden - you’ll need to make sure they have a large area at home
  • Initial set-up costs for their hutch and accessories can be expensive at first
  • Rabbits have very distinctive personalities and, once tamed, love spending time with you and other compatible rabbits (rabbits should ideally live in pairs)
  • Rabbits can enrich your children’s learning environment, helping them to understand more about animals and the natural world. They make suitable pets for older children, with adult supervision
  • Rabbits take time to clean out, feed and health check every day
  • Owners must consider the costs of vet bills, bedding and food costs throughout the rabbits’ lives and must be able to commit to these on-going costs
  • Rabbits must also be vaccinated and neutered. It’s worth noting that unneutered rabbits can become aggressive when they mature and are prone to cancer of the reproductive tract – so neutering is not just to avoid unwanted babies
  • A decision to get a rabbit should not be taken lightly; rabbits can live up to 12 years so are a long-term commitment
  • Rabbits prefer the company of other rabbits – the temperament of any other pets you currently have, such as cats and dogs, should be considered when welcoming a rabbit into your home. Rabbits shouldn’t be housed with guinea pigs as they have opposing diets and communicate in different way.

Introducing I AM Home: IAMS' charitable initiative

IAMS' charitable initiative helps UK cats and dogs find a forever home...

With 70 years of pet expertise, IAMS knows it’s about more than creating superior diets that provide pets with everything they need for a healthy, active life - it’s about finding them a loving family. It is this vision that inspired IAMS to set up I AM HOME, a charitable initiative to help thousands of cats and dogs across the country to find their forever home.

By partnering with several UK animal charities, IAMS provides support and care by donating its premium nutrition to animals in need, ensuring they benefit from a 100% complete and balanced diet and enjoy a healthy, active life while they wait to be united with a loving family. Each year, IAMS’ charity partners rehome thousands of cats and dogs, and over the last 12 months, IAMS has donated over 60 tonnes of pet nutrition to rescue and rehoming centres across the country – that’s the same weight as 16 elephants!

As part of the initiative, IAMS has set up a dedicated I AM HOME community on the IAMS UK Facebook page, where pet owners can share their personal and heart-warming stories of pet adoption, and where partner charities can share stories of cats and dogs waiting to find their forever home. Through the growing online community, IAMS and its charity partners hope to raise awareness of pet adoption and connect cats and dogs across the UK with prospective pet parents.

IAMS Veterinary Training Manager, Kellie Ceccarelli, comments, “Every cat and dog deserves the chance to find love and affection in a forever home. What’s more, for pet parents, adopting a pet can be an extremely rewarding experience. By working closely with our charity partners, this is something we hope to raise greater awareness of, while also celebrating the kind and tireless work carried out by rescue and rehoming centres across the country when it comes to finding cats and dogs a loving home.”

Pets at Home supports Rabbit Awareness Week with continued ban on instore museli sales

Pets at Home is supporting Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) by maintaining its ban on selling rabbit muesli in its 440 stores...

Pets at Home is supporting Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) by maintaining its ban on selling rabbit muesli in its 440 stores.

Removing this food from a rabbit’s diet is the key campaign theme for RAW’s 2018 activity, which runs from 2nd – 10th June. ‘Move Away from Museli’ was selected as the theme by the group because it wishes to draw attention to the poor nutrition that such a diet offers.

This opinion is fully supported by Pets at Home which first banned rabbit muesli sales from its stores in April 2013. The ban followed research conducted by The University of Edinburgh & Burgess Pet Care that demonstrated rabbits fed on a muesli diet are more likely to suffer from dental and digestive problems, as well as obesity.

Instead, Pets at Home suggests rabbit owners who haven’t already made the switch to alternative diets get behind RAW’s campaign and move towards a diet that is primarily built around hay with the occasional mixture of leafy greens and rabbit nuggets.

Dr Maeve Moorcroft, head of pets at Pets at Home, said: “We’re proud to support responsible pet ownership and pleased to have not sold this potentially harmful food type for rabbits in our stores for five years. It’s great that RAW is continuing to draw attention to this issue and we hope that Move Away from Muesli helps to encourage a positive change in what rabbit owners feed to their floppy eared friends.”

Pets at Home is also supporting rabbit welfare by banning the sale of rabbits during the Easter Bank Holiday, when interest in their potential as a pet increases due to children’s love of the Easter bunny. Instead, the retailer will run free instore workshops around rabbit care and points to consider when looking into taking on a rabbit as a pet.

A new, fresh look to celebrate Cotswold RAW's PATS debut

With a PATS debut in the offing, Cotswold RAW felt now was the perfect moment to unveil the latest chapter in their ongoing commitment to embracing a healthier living, raw pet food agenda...

With a PATS debut in the offing, Cotswold RAW felt now was the perfect moment to unveil the latest chapter in their ongoing commitment to embracing a healthier living, raw pet food agenda.

The striking ‘Healthy, Happy Dog’ campaign will seek to reaffirm this rural pet food pioneer’s unwavering commitment to a more ‘trust nature’ mindset; reaffirming the inextricable link between rejecting nutrient sapping heat treatments and being perfectly placed to provide a game-changing array of tasty, nutritionally-dense meal solutions for deserving dogs.

According to brand spokesperson, Martin Pacey: "As a vocal supporter of the UK’s dynamic independent pet food sector, we were keen to provide a new deck of new instore promotional materials that provides yet further impetus for the UK’s thriving BARF movement.

"We see the UK’s independent pet food arena as a hotbed for pet innovation, especially in a world when four-legged and human eating habits are becoming ever closer aligned (hypo-allergenic, raw, organic, gluten-free, nutrient rich….)."

Cotswold RAW acknowledges that whilst supermarkets will always be quick to adapt to great ideas, bringing invaluable influence and economies of scale to the table, it’s the hard-working independent pet food sector, with its specialist staff that backs fresh ‘new thinking’ by providing the space, staff support and countless trial opportunities which enable companies all sizes and means to build and bed down diehard followings.

"Like so many other cutting edge pet food providers, Cotswold RAW owes a sizeable debt of gratitude to the ongoing guile, diligence and infectious enthusiasm of the UK’s dynamic pet food scene for never settling for second best," added Martin

The opening day of PATS Sandown has been hailed as a huge success by exhibitors, who unveiled an amazing array of products in two busy halls at Sandown Park.

Exhibitors were particularly pleased with the quality of enquiries and orders generated from the many visitors who flocked into the show.

Toby Massey, co-founder of Beco Pets, said: “This is the 10th anniversary show for PATS Sandown and it just keeps getting better. The number and quality of visitors to the Beco Lounge has already exceeded our expectations.”

A new addition to PATS Sandown this year has been the Vital Grandstand, which proved very popular as director Sunny Sharma said: “We are having a fantastic first day and couldn’t be more pleased. Turnout at the Vital Grandstand and our enlarged stand, J7 in the Surrey Hall, has been beyond expectations and we are delighted with the response from existing and prospective customers.

“We’ve been handing out goody bags and providing refreshments to all our visitors and it has been so well received that over lunchtime delegates were queuing up to join us.”

“I know we’ve all felt that there’s a real buzz going on in the Grandstand in particular and thanks go to the suppliers who are supporting us there with exclusive deals. Our exclusive ranges are also creating excitement over at the main hall stand. We really wanted to signal that the new Vital is all about doing things differently, partnering with customers and suppliers and delivering best in class service. Today it really feels as if that message is being heard.”

It was also a fantastic first day for FROZZYS with Noel Conlon admitting: “I am indebted to PATS for opening so many doors. This exhibition has given us the opportunity to accelerate our business in the UK while attracting interest from countries such as Spain, Denmark and Holland.”

Another success story on a memorable opening day was Pet Remedy, who picked up two New Product Awards. Sales director Rob Tyler said: “The show was already proving to be very profitable even before we picked up two awards. Interest soared to even greater levels after the awards were announced so we’ve been busy all day.”

Unipet International was another award-winner, and marketing manager Dawn Robinson said: “The success in the New Product Awards has definitely driven people to our stand. We couldn’t have wished for a better first day at the show.”

One of the big attractions of the shows was the fact there were 37 exhibitors new to PATS Sandown. Lara Waddell, of Healthy Hounds, summed up the mood of the newcomers by saying: “I’ve been blown away with the response to our supplements and treats. The first day has been brilliant and if the show ended now we would still be pleased with the business we’ve done from both independent retailers and the big pet chains.”

The first day of the show also got the thumbs-up from visiting retailers.

Tony Sharpe, of Pets Korner, Stamford, Lincolnshire, said: “I love the timing of PATS Sandown because it gives us the chance to see all the new launches for the year. We’re here for two days, which gives us time to weigh everything up before making the big purchasing decisions. It’s a show we can’t afford to miss.”

And Piers Smart, of Scampers, Cambridgeshire, commented: ““I came to PATS looking for one type of product innovation and I found it.”

Pet industry counts cost as country store chain goes into administration

A number of pet product suppliers will be hoping that a buyer can be found for the failing Countrywide Farmers business, which went into administration just over a week ago...

A number of pet product suppliers are counting the cost of the decision to appoint administrators for the failing Countrywide Farmers business, which runs a number of country stores in the UK.

The sale of pet products and pet food was a major sector of the company’s business, and its latest problems are seen as a major headache for the industry with some suppliers being owed money.

Countrywide Farmers went into administration just over a week ago on March 7, and the administrators from KPMG have said it’s their intention to seek a buyer for the business.

They have appointed Hilco Capital to assist in running the Countrywide Farmers stores while they explore and develop available options.

The company, based in Evesham, Worcestershire, announced plans to sell the business in April last year, but a potential sale to Mole Valley Farmers Ltd fell through in October.

On March 1, the company announced it had sold its liquefied petroleum gas division to DCC Flogas, however its retail business sale to Mole Valley could not be approved and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced an investigation.

Countrywide announced it was going into administration as the CMA investigation could last up to six months, and the company said it would be "unable to meet its financial obligations for this extended period of time".

Countrywide Farmers employs more than 700 people and has 48 stores. The administrators have said no "initial redundancies" had been made.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday a major fire broke out at the Gardman warehouse in Daventry. There were no casualties but the building and stock was destroyed.

On Tuesday, the emergency services spent a second day attending the scene. The fire is fully contained but investigations are on-going. Emergency service presence has been scaled back and discussions about the demolition of the building were due to take place yesterday (Wednesday).

Northamptonshire Police confirmed that a man arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

In a statement Gardman said: "Whilst the fire has destroyed the Daventry warehouse, our business recovery plan is starting to take shape as we consolidate stock from other locations, receive stock from overseas and continue to source our core business of wild bird care locally.

"We would like to extend our thanks to all those who have offered their help and support whilst we pull this together.

"We will update you as we progress via www.gardman.co.uk"
