Supreme Petfoods has launched a new £2,000 Selective Vet Grant aimed at supporting veterinary professionals passionate about improving rabbit and exotic pet care within practice.

The grant has been created to help veterinary teams strengthen their knowledge, confidence and care standards for rabbits and other small pets, with funding available for projects including CPD, rabbit-friendly practice improvements, client education initiatives and investment in new equipment or educational resources.

The initiative is supported by leading exotic animal vet Molly Varga Smith, an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, author of the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine and founder of The Exotic Animal Vets. Widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading experts in rabbit and exotic pet medicine, Molly has spent decades championing improved standards of rabbit care and advancing veterinary education around small mammals.

With rabbits now recognised as the UK’s most popular pet after cats and dogs, Supreme hopes the Selective Vet Grant will help encourage greater focus on rabbit welfare and support practices looking to further develop their rabbit – and other exotic pet – expertise.

Recognising the hugely important role veterinary professionals play in improving rabbit welfare, the initiative is open to both veterinary practices applying directly and to pet owners nominating a practice they believe deserves recognition for its commitment to small-pet care. It forms part of Supreme Petfoods’ ongoing commitment to supporting better rabbit welfare and helping to improve education on the care of small pets.

The expert grant approval panel includes Dr Molly Varga Smith (The Exotic Animal Vets), Cat Henstridge (Cat the Vet), James Westgate (Editor, Vet Times), and Claire Hamblion-Jennings (Marketing Director, Supreme Petfoods).

Claire Hamblion-Jennings, Marketing Director at Supreme Petfoods, said: “Veterinary professionals can make a huge difference to rabbit welfare, particularly through education, preventative care and creating a more rabbit-friendly experience within practice. Through this grant, we want to help support practices that are passionate about continuing to raise standards and improve outcomes for rabbits and other small pets.”

How to apply…

The grant is aimed at veterinary teams at any stage of their exotic medicine journey, from newly qualified vets and nurses seeking to build confidence to experienced teams looking to expand their rabbit and small-mammal services.

Pet owners are also encouraged to nominate veterinary practices that have made a positive difference to the care of their rabbit or small pet, helping shine a spotlight on teams dedicated to improving welfare standards and client support.

Applications and nominations for the Supreme £2,000 Selective Vet Grant are now open https://supremepetfoods.com/selective-vet-grant/.

<nw:body>
Following Labour MS Mike Hedges' call for prospective rabbit owners to complete a training course before being allowed to own a rabbit, Burgess Pet Care has issued a response…

Deputy Managing Director Suzanne Moyes said: “Burgess Pet Care supports any measures that encourage responsible animal ownership and promote high standards of animal welfare.

“We strongly believe rabbit ownership should always reflect the welfare needs of these highly social animals. Ensuring owners understand rabbits’ requirements, from companionship and housing to nutrition and enrichment, is essential to helping them live healthy, happy lives – initiatives such as Rabbit Awareness Week help to support this.

“However, we believe the most effective way to improve rabbit welfare is by making accurate, practical information readily available at every stage of the ownership journey, particularly at the point when people acquire rabbits, rather than through mandatory training or testing.

“Our recent Small Animal Census found that more than half of rabbits are now being acquired through rescue centres, where prospective owners are often already receiving high-quality guidance and support. Introducing formal tests or additional barriers could unintentionally make rehoming more difficult and may not deliver the intended welfare benefits.

“Instead, greater focus should be placed on education, accessible resources and ongoing support for owners - empowering people to make informed decisions and provide the best possible care for their rabbits.”

<nw:body>
As technological advancements continue to develop, the latest survey of 1,000 UK dog and cat owners by pet insurer Petplan reveals how owners are using tech to care for their pets today – and the innovations they most want to see in the future.

Key findings include:

39% of pet owners most want advanced health monitoring for early disease detection, making it the top desired future technology.

38% want enhanced pet security and anti‑theft tracking features.

However, 24% of pet owners say they are concerned about the accuracy of pet technology.

Peace of mind is the biggest motivator behind pet technology

The most popular pet technologies are GPS collars and location monitoring trackers, used by nearly half of pet owners (41%). Younger dogs were much more likely to have a tracker to reduce the chance their pet gets lost (48% of dogs under one year have a GPS or location tracker compared to just 18% of dogs aged 13 and over).

Pet cameras are also popular among pet owners, particularly younger owners (used by 43% of Gen Z vs 23% of Baby Boomers).

Owners’ top motivations for using technology include reassurance and emotional support. Nearly two-thirds of pet owners (65%) use GPS collars or location trackers to provide “peace of mind”, and 48% use pet cameras to alleviate any worries or stress.

Interestingly, older pet owners tend to be more relaxed about pet technology. Whilst 41% of Baby Boomers say they have no concerns at all about pet technology, just 9% of Gen Z say the same.

What’s worrying owners about pet technology?

Cost is the primary concern when using pet technology; with high costs and ongoing subscription fees affecting 31% of pet owners.

Over a quarter of pet owners (26%) worry that pet technology may cause potential discomfort, irritation, or stress for their pet. Whilst 23% are concerned about over-reliance on technology and the potential reduction in human interaction.

Petplan’s veterinary expert, Dr Brian Faulkner, says “Pet owners understandably want their cats and dogs to feel safer, healthier and in a better mood. But while technology can help us feel secure, no device is infallible. Whether we use technology or not, taking sensible safety precautions, and establishing positive health routines, can improve our pet interactions and give us extra peace of mind.”

What technology do pet owners want to see in the future?

Looking ahead, pet owners are most excited about technologies that could protect their pets’ health and safety. 39%want more advanced health monitoring tools for early disease detection, and 38% are seeking more advanced security and anti‑theft tracking features in response to ongoing concerns about pet theft.

Pet owners in the West Midlands (47%) and Scotland (44%) were most likely to express interest in advanced health monitoring. While East Midland pet owners (45%) showed the highest interest in improved pet security. For health monitoring, 40% of Gen Z and Millennials (41%) want advanced health monitoring, compared with 38% of Gen X and 25% of Baby Boomers.

Dr Brian Faulkner says “In our busy lives, technology can enhance and simplify our daily pet routine. But there’s no substitute for the everyday warmth and affection of our pet encounters.”

“Ultimately, pet technology should help us get closer, not further apart, from our beloved cats and dogs.”

To protect the things that really count, explore Petplan’s pet insurance for that added certainty you and your pet deserve.

As a trusted voice in wild bird care, Honeyfields is supporting retailers in encouraging bird lovers to take a consistent approach to feeding garden birds throughout the summer months.

“It’s a common myth is that summer is the ‘easy season’ for birds,” says Sarah Kitson, Head of Marketing. “The reality, backed by science, is more complex than this.”

While it’s often assumed that birds can rely solely on natural food at this time of year, seasonal pressures tell a different story. Summer is a period of intense activity, with adult birds working tirelessly to raise young just as natural seed supplies are at their lowest.

“This ‘hunger gap’ can be more stressful than the coldest winter months,” continues Sarah. “Stopping food supplies at this critical time doesn’t encourage birds to ‘be natural’ it risks starving them when they need help the most.”

For fledglings, the risk is even greater. Young birds need protein to help support the growth of strong bones and feathers, but natural insect numbers don’t always match the demand. Published research shows that suddenly removing food sources in summer can backfire.

“Birds don’t simply stop eating, they move to neighbouring gardens,” explains Sarah. “This creates two problems; the pressure on those few remaining feeders increases and crowding can result in more competition, more stress, and higher chances of spreading disease such as Trichomoniasis. Secondly, it creates energy waste; birds burn precious calories flying further afield to find what they could have had more easily in the gardens that they rely on.”

Not only does a reliable source of appropriate food help bridge the gap between natural supply and increased demand but it can also reduce health risks Feeding birds across more gardens helps to naturally disperse feeding activity, reducing crowding at individual sites. This can help minimise stress and support better hygiene conditions when combined with good feeding practices.

For retailers, reinforcing consistent feeding habits also helps sustain customer engagement with wild bird care beyond the traditional winter peak. The key is to emphasise the importance of feeding responsibly. Added-value features, including a feeding and hygiene guide and a QR code linking to the Honeyfields Discover hub that shares seasonal feeding tips and insights for feeding responsibly, help build trust and encourage repeat purchase.

Protein-rich foods like kibbled peanuts, kibbled sunflower hearts and mealworms, will help adult birds refuel quickly while supporting the healthy development of chicks. Suet products or pellets with added insects or seeds can also be especially helpful during the breeding season with their high protein and calories.

Alongside product recommendations, Honeyfields® encourages retailers to share simple best-practice health and hygiene guidance with customers:

Honeyfields Simply Range: Bird Health First is a new premium wild bird food collection spanning key subcategories including seed mixes, straights, suets and treats. Every pack includes a feeding and hygiene guide and a QR code linking to the Honeyfields® Discover hub that shares seasonal feeding tips and insights for feeding responsibly, helping to build trust and encourage repeat purchase.

Feed little and often, using fresh food

Space feeders to reduce crowding

Clean feeders and water sources regularly

Provide fresh water daily

Remove uneaten food and debris

“Think of summer feeding as a bridge, one that carries struggling birds across the toughest weeks of the year. Without it, many simply won’t make it,” said Sarah. “By continuing to feed responsibly, putting bird health first, we can help birds cope better with one of the busiest and most demanding times of their year.”

With clear guidance and the right product offering, retailers can position themselves as trusted advisors helping customers care for garden wildlife all year round.

<nw:body>
As July marks National Ice Cream Month, award‑winning Dorset gelato manufacturer Baboo Gelato is reminding dog owners that not all ice creams are safe for pets.

The Dorset‑based artisan gelateria – creator of the award‑winning dog frozen treat Doggy Doggy Yum Yum – is also celebrating its 10th birthday this summer. As part of the milestone, Baboo Gelato is using National Ice Cream Month to raise awareness about the dangers of feeding dogs human ice cream and to highlight safe, dairy‑free alternatives.

Founded in 2016 by husband‑and‑wife team Annie and Sam Hanbury, Baboo Gelato began with a simple raspberry sorbet made from garden fruit. Annie later trained professionally at the Carpigiani University of Gelato in Bologna, transforming a kitchen experiment into one of the UK’s most respected artisan gelaterias. Today, Baboo Gelato is a Taste of the West Champion, a Great Taste Producer, and the maker of multiple Three Star Great Taste Award‑winning products. Their philosophy remains simple: “Ingredients, ingredients, ingredients.”

This commitment extends to their dog-friendly range. During National Ice Cream Month, Baboo Gelato warns that sharing human ice cream with dogs—even occasionally—can lead to serious health issues. Most adult dogs lose the enzyme lactase, making dairy difficult to digest. Human ice cream can cause bloating, diarrhoea, vomiting, pancreatitis, obesity, diabetes, and allergic reactions to milk proteins. Many flavours also contain toxic ingredients such as xylitol, chocolate, raisins, grapes, and macadamia nuts. Even “dog-friendly” puppuccinos and other brands made with lactose-free dairy still carry risks due to fat content, calories, and dairy‑based allergens.

In response to customer demand, Baboo Gelato created Doggy Doggy Yum Yum, a clean‑label, plant‑based frozen treat designed specifically for dogs. Made with a 100% dairy‑free coconut milk base, it contains no refined sugars, artificial flavourings, emulsifiers, or gums. It is naturally sweetened with organic agave syrup, fully vegan, gluten‑free, xylitol‑free, and includes Dorwest Herbs Keeper’s Mix® Sensitive to support coat and overall health. Flavours include Peanut Butter & Banana and Apple & Blueberry.

Every pot sold donates 5p to Dogs for Good, helping train assistance dogs for people with disabilities, autism, and dementia.

“If you’re treating your dog this summer, make sure it’s with a frozen dessert that’s truly safe,” says co‑founder Sam Hanbury. “National Ice Cream Month is the perfect time to celebrate—but also to protect our pets.”

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is available in grocery shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants, pet shops, and at Baboo Gelato kiosks in West Bay, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, and Swanage, as well as online and through Pedigree Wholesale, Hunt’s Food Group, and Cotswold Fayre.

Tributes have poured in following the death of pet shop owner Barbara Mullarney, who was killed in a two-car crash. The other driver involved, a man aged 43, has appeared in court charged with murder.

Floral tributes lined the pavement outside Animal Fayre pet shop in Cricklade, near Cirencester, following Barbara’s death.

And friends and customers paid their own tributes on social media with one post saying: “Barbara was the most wonderful, generous, kind and warm person you could ever meet who supported an entire community.”

Another said: “Cricklade now has a huge hole in its community! The world lost a very special person,” while a further commented: “Her shop was a treasure trove of well thought out products.”

Anthony Howells, 43, of no fixed abode, appeared before Bristol Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday) charged with murder, dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, failing to stop after a road accident and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. His case was adjourned to Friday, August 7 and was remanded in custody.

The crash happened on June 30, at around 6:05pm. Emergency services descended on the B4696 between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain, near Royal Wootton Bassett, following a crash involving an orange Peugeot 107 travelling southbound and a black Vauxhall Astra travelling northbound. Barbara, the driver of the Peugeot, was declared dead at the scene.

<nw:body>
Ornamental Fish International, in collaboration with Aquafauna Biosystems, has launched the Global Marine Aquarium Trade Dialogue 2026, a new international online forum dedicated to fostering open, evidence-based discussions on the future of the marine aquarium trade that is to be held online on the 10th September 2026.

The GMAT Dialogue brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, conservation organisations, industry practitioners, coastal community representatives, and innovators from around the world. The Dialogue has been established to promote constructive engagement, strengthen collaboration, and encourage informed decision-making on issues shaping the future of the marine aquarium sector.

As the industry enters a defining decade, expectations surrounding sustainability, animal welfare, transparency, and community livelihoods continue to grow. At the same time, differing data sets, methodologies, and policy perspectives have contributed to fragmented narratives and uncertainty. The GMAT Dialogue seeks to bridge these gaps by providing a neutral, globally accessible platform where participants can share knowledge, examine scientific evidence, and explore practical solutions that support both healthy coral reef ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods.

The programme will feature keynote presentations by internationally recognised experts, regional perspectives from across the global supply chain, interactive panel discussions, and opportunities for open dialogue among participants. By bringing together voices from science, industry, government, and civil society, the Dialogue aims to improve understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the marine aquarium trade while identifying practical pathways towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

Importantly, the GMAT Dialogue is not intended to advocate for any single viewpoint. Rather, it is designed to encourage respectful dialogue, promote transparency, and facilitate evidence-based discussions that recognise the complexity of marine aquarium fisheries and the diverse communities that depend on them. Through greater collaboration and knowledge sharing, the Dialogue seeks to support reef-positive outcomes, responsible trade practices, and balanced policy development.

"Meaningful progress begins with meaningful dialogue," said Jonathan Poh, Secretary General of Ornamental Fish International. "The marine aquarium trade encompasses conservation, science, livelihoods, animal welfare, and international commerce.

Addressing these interconnected issues requires collaboration across sectors and a willingness to engage openly with evidence. The GMAT Dialogue provides an opportunity for stakeholders to come together, exchange perspectives, and work towards practical solutions that benefit both people and reefs."

The Global Marine Aquarium Trade Dialogue 2026 reflects OFI's ongoing commitment to advancing responsible, sustainable, and science-based practices within the ornamental aquatic industry while strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders involved in the marine aquarium trade.

<nw:synopsis>
Vet warns owners not to get complacent over heatstroke risk...

</nw:synopsis>
<nw:body>
UKHSA yellow heat-health alerts are in place across large parts of England until Saturday 11 July, the third heatwave of the summer.

Dr Caroline Allen FRCVS, founder of independent second-opinion veterinary service Pet Lighthouse and former RSPCA Chief Veterinary Officer, has a clear message for dog owners: the risk hasn't gone down just because the heat feels familiar.

“The advice everyone repeats is “dogs die in hot cars”, and that's true. But the heatstroke cases I've treated were dogs out in the park, or playing fetch in the garden. Evidence shows that three quarters of cases in the UK were triggered by exercise. Heatstroke is a genuine medical emergency- dangerous, distressing, and in serious cases is expensive to treat. Recovery isn't guaranteed,” says Dr Allen.

“A dog pacing round the house, chewing things they shouldn't because they are bored is distressing for everyone. But grabbing the lead or throwing a ball because that's the normal fix isn't the answer in this heat. It's a good time to try something different."

Her call to owners is simple: find ways to engage a bored dog that don't rely on exertion.

“It doesn't have to be the ball again. Scent games, food puzzles, calm training - these tire a dog out mentally without raising their body temperature. This shift also helps you build a stronger bond with your dog, heatwave or not,” she adds.

Pet Lighthouse offers independent, whole-animal second-opinion consultations focused on pets' quality of life and owner wellbeing. Consultations can be booked directly, or owners can start with a free 10-minute exploratory call.

Following two (soon to be three) successful years at the NEC Birmingham, The Cat Show Live announces its first London event and is inviting brands and strategic partners to be part of this exciting new chapter.

The Cat Show Live has today officially opened trade, strategic partnership and commercial applications for its inaugural London event, taking place at Excel London on Saturday 22nd May 2027.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for the business, which has grown from a start-up event into one of the UK's leading education-led cat platforms, combining live events with year-round digital engagement, educational content, and commercial partnerships.

Applications are now open for 100 trade exhibition spaces, including 25 dedicated Market Place opportunities created specifically for independent retailers, innovators, artisans, start-ups and sole traders.

The event is expected to welcome:

7,000–8,000 visitors

200 cats

18 rescue organisations

100 brands

Two live education theatres

International speakers and leading veterinary professionals

Public ticket sales for the London event will begin on 13th September 2026, immediately following the next NEC Birmingham event, where only a limited number of trade & partnership opportunities now remain available. This allows the business to focus on delivering its biggest NEC event to date while supporting organisations planning their 2027 marketing activity.

Unlike traditional exhibitions, The Cat Show Live has developed into a 365-day platform, enabling partners to engage with audiences throughout the year through digital campaigns, educational content, community initiatives, brand storytelling, live experiences, and strategic partnerships.

The Cat Show Live reaches more than two million combined online views each month, creating opportunities for organisations to build meaningful relationships with one of the UK's most engaged cat communities.

The continued growth of the platform has attracted support from respected organisations and internationally recognised brands including:

Ever Clean (Clorox)

Applaws (MPM Pet Products)

Kittilitt

TriviumVet

EveryCat Foundation (USA)

Scruffs

Trixie

Schesir

Samantha Marsh, Co-Founder of The Cat Show Live, says: “London has always been part of our long-term vision, but we knew it had to be built on solid foundations. We are inviting businesses to become part of something much bigger than a single event. The Cat Show Live has evolved into a year-round platform where brands can educate, engage and build lasting relationships with our community through what we call 'Partnerships with Purpose'.”

Peter Banbury, Co-Founder, added: "Businesses today want more than exhibition space. They want measurable engagement, authentic partnerships and opportunities that deliver value throughout the year. That is the model we have been building over the past three years, and we're excited to welcome both existing and new organisations as we continue our expansion into London.”

Trade applications for The Cat Show Live London are now open, with businesses encouraged to register their interest early to secure the best opportunities.

Highly recommended are places like the Norton Canes Services on the M6 Toll in the Midlands, which gives access to a wooded nature trail.

Two separate stops on the M40 - Cherwell Valley and Beaconsfield - also make it into the top 10.

Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, said: “There’s nothing more disheartening than stopping at motorway services to discover there’s virtually nowhere to properly exercise your dog. “Travelling in the car can be stressful for many pets and being able to let them truly stretch their legs and enjoy themselves is a godsend for anyone who views their dog as another member of the family. “While relatively uncommon on the UK’s motorway network, some service stations do provide access to countryside walks and nature trails that’ll help your pet unwind during long journeys.”

Top 10 motorway services with dog-friendly walking areasAnnandale Water (A74(M) at J16) - Dumfries and Galloway, ScotlandPark at the very back of the car park and you’ll find access to a large field beside a lake. Operator Road Chef also says: “All our hotels are pet-friendly. We welcome animals of all sizes for a small charge because we understand that your dog is a part of the family and should be allowed to join in on any adventure.”

Leeds Skelton Lake (M1 at J45) - West YorkshireThis West Yorkshire stop boasts a network of paths, while a countryside walk begins behind the main building. Water stations and waste bins are also available.A recent Trip Advisor reviewer points out: “Even great for dogs, dog-friendly seating inside and a huge field out back.”

Norton Canes (M6 Toll between J6 and J7) - StaffordshireMotorway Services Online says Norton Canes is an ‘exclusive treat for drivers on Britain's only tolled motorway’, as there is a designated nature walk from the car park. The M6 Toll website adds: “With a great range of brands, electric vehicle charging points and a large outdoor recreation space, it’s the perfect spot for stretching your legs (or the dog’s) during a long journey.”

Donington (M1 at J23A) - LeicestershireHead to the front of the car park and then walk behind the building to find a large field hidden away. Website Driving with Dogs also highlights how there’s access to the National Forest, along with all of the usual service station facilities.

Beaconsfield (M40 at J2) - BuckinghamshireFrom the car park there is access to a large lakeside walk and dining terrace. Operator Extra says: “One of the most attractive Motorway Service Areas (MSAs) in Europe, Beaconsfield Services boasts a large lakeside terrace, landscaped grounds and preserved woodlands. There’s a great play area for children at the rear terrace offering beautiful views of the lake area.”

Cherwell Valley (M40 at J10) - OxfordshireMotorway Services Online reveals: “Not many people know this place has a huge field around the back. You need to find the little path around the back of the hotel to get there.”A Trip Advisor review adds: “There were signs advertising dog walks near the hotel entrance and literally behind the hotel was a large field where the dog could run free, and beyond that a couple of woods with good signposted walks.”

Gloucester (M5 between J11A and J12) - GloucestershireKnown for its clever building design and artisan food, both the northbound and southbound sites include a designated dog walk. Gloucester Services adds: “Our dog walks at northbound and southbound are family-friendly traffic-free short routes offering views across the countryside. Please keep your dogs on a lead and use the poo bins provided.”

Severn View (M48 at J1) - GloucestershireMotorway Services Online reveals: “Perhaps not your usual dog walk, but this place does offer access to the pedestrian path across the Severn Bridge. If you'd rather stay on the ground, there is also a large field and another path along the waterfront.” One recent Google review adds: “Exercise area for dogs that are welcome in the building. This feels like a proper break rather than a grab and go.”

South Mimms (M25 at J23) - HertfordshireWhile this popular and busy landmark doesn't have a big open space, you’ll find a small gate that takes you along a quiet path before leading you into a nature reserve. It’s also a stop worth considering on hotter days. You can find a ford over a shallow brook that’s perfect for your pooch to have a paddle.

Cobham (M25 between J9 and J10) - SurreyOne of Britain's busiest service stations tries to cater for everybody - you need to get as close to the coach park as you can and there is then a safe walk around a lake. Operator Extra adds: “It’s a modern and comfortable place for you to take a break from your journey, featuring a large lakeside terrace and landscaped grounds to help you relax and stretch your legs.”

Burgess Pet Care has acquired German small animal nutrition brand, Bunny Nature. The move marks a significant step forward in Burgess’ global growth strategy that will see the group increase its international revenues five-fold to £12.5m.

The acquisition, completed through an asset purchase process, represents Burgess’ largest international deal to date following its purchase of natural dog food brand Green Pantry and investment in fresh dog food subscription business Tuggs.

Founded in 1988, Bunny Nature is known for its high-quality small animal feeds, with established distribution spanning the EU, North America and Asia. Its international footprint provides Burgess with immediate access to a broader customer base and supports its ongoing strategy to scale its presence worldwide.

The combination of Burgess and Bunny Nature brings together two well-established, science-led brands with shared values and focus on animal health and nutrition. The two businesses are highly complementary, creating opportunities to introduce proven products into new markets through existing distribution networks. The partnership also accelerates innovation by combining expertise, establishing the business with an operational platform inside mainland Europe on which to further expand its reach globally.

Burgess will maintain Bunny Nature as a distinct brand within the group, preserving its German identity, customer relationships and product quality. Existing senior leadership teams will remain in place, providing continuity and a seamless service for its customers, partners and employees.

Mark Womersley, Managing Director of Burgess Pet Care, said: “This is a significant milestone for Burgess. Bunny Nature is a highly respected brand with genuine international reach, and its values, expertise, and reputation align perfectly with our long-term ambition to create the world’s leading small animal brand.

“What stood out to us throughout the process was the strength of its people, brand, its customer relationships and the quality of its products. We see clear opportunities to invest, to grow and to build a truly global small animal nutrition company with an unmatched offering for pets and pet owners around the world.

“The acquisition transforms our global footprint. International sales now account for 35% of group revenue, up from 10% previously, with international revenue increasing from £2.5m to £12.5m—five times its previous size."

Oliver Petzoldt, Managing Director of Bunny Nature, added: “Bunny Nature has built a loyal customer base and strong reputation across multiple markets, and we’re pleased to be joining a business that shares our values around animal welfare and nutrition. Burgess brings both expertise and long-term commitment, and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow the brand together.”

Tom Roberts, group Chairman, and the latest generation of the founding Burgess family, said: “This acquisition reflects our confidence in the future of the pet care market and is great news for the Burgess family.

West Yorkshire raw dog food company Naturaw has secured a six-figure funding boost from Allica Bank to help triple production of its award-winning range.

Founder Jess Warneken started Naturaw in 2014 to provide better food for her dog, Louis, a Rhodesian Ridgeback who had become unwell with repeated skin and ear infections. After struggling to pinpoint the exact cause, she switched Louis to a raw food diet – and it transformed his health. That experience became the catalyst for Naturaw, a brand on a mission to bring the benefits of raw feeding to dogs across the UK.

The family-run business produces homemade, nutrient-dense dog food for pets across the UK. Menu options range from free range chicken and grass fed beef to surf and turf, and all meals are made with 100% high welfare meat, sourced from British farms. In a bid to meet wider sustainability goals, all packaging is plastic-free and home compostable, and the Naturaw kitchen is solar-powered.

“We are so proud of what Naturaw has become – what started as a desperate attempt to relieve Louis of his horrible ear and skin infections has grown into a thriving business providing breakfast, lunches and dinners for furry family members up and down the country,” says founder Jess.

The six-figure loan from Allica Bank will enable the business to invest in new machinery and production equipment as well as expand its team, with the aim of tripling its production volume over the next three years.

Allica’s funding will also go towards enabling the business to increase its storage capacity to allow for over 100,000 packs of their raw dog food – enough to provide around half a million meals – following on from a significant expansion of their HQ last year.

The UK Pet Food Sector is worth over two billion pounds and shows no signs of slowing down as growing consumer awareness builds around pet health, nutrition and ingredient quality. In turn, dog owners are increasingly making the change to raw food, with the segment alone now worth approximately two hundred million pounds.

Allica’s support is helping Naturaw keep up with the rapidly growing industry and promote long-term, sustainable growth.

“Viva la Rawvolution!” says Naturaw director Chris Broadbent. ‘‘Dogs and their owners deserve better, they deserve real food, clearly labelled, that they were designed to eat – the rawvolution is on and our customer base continues to grow, with the business doubling every two years, because of the quality of the product.

“Demand for raw pet food shows no signs of slowing down and with the support from Allica, we can future-proof the business and add production and distribution capacity that will enable us to keep growing for the next three years and beyond.”

Andy Castle, Naturaw’s Relationship Manager at Allica Bank, said: “What a privilege it’s been to support Chris and the team at Naturaw as they bring dog health to the forefront of conversation and help families get the best nutrition for their beloved pets.

“Ultimately, Naturaw is exactly the kind of business Allica is proud to back. They’re opening up job opportunities in the local community and driving positive change not only here in Yorkshire but throughout the whole of the UK. We are delighted that this funding will contribute to the further expansion of their production and workforce and support their growth.”

Non-executive director and founder of North View Advisory, Dave Moore, who connected Naturaw with Allica Bank, said: “Chris and Jess’s passion for what they do is inspiring and I was delighted to join the team in a director capacity as they navigate this exciting chapter of growth. I have also worked alongside Andy for many years so bringing him on to aid Naturaw’s expansion felt like a natural fit.”

Flea treatment restrictions would hit lower-income pet owners hardest

Independent polling of 2,001 UK pet owners, commissioned by Johnson's Veterinary Products, shows that support for reclassification of over-the-counter (OTC) spot-on flea & tick treatments rises sharply with household income, while lower earners are more likely to stop treatment, seek alternatives, or reduce visits to local pet shops...

Independent polling of 2,001 UK pet owners shows that support for reclassification of over-the-counter (OTC) spot-on flea & tick treatments rises sharply with household income, while lower earners are more likely to stop treatment, seek alternatives, or reduce visits to local pet shops.

The independent research commissioned by Johnson's Veterinary Products Ltd found that restrictions would fall hardest on the pet owners least able to absorb the cost, while perhaps unsurprisingly, the households most likely to support reclassification are those most able to afford it.

The research, conducted by Censuswide among a nationally representative sample of 2,001 UK cat and dog owners in May 2026, reveals a striking split in attitudes toward reclassification by household income.

Among owners with household incomes under £15,000 a year, only 19.7% support requiring a veterinary consultation or specialist involvement before purchasing flea & tick treatments. Among those with household incomes over £75,000, that figure rises to 36%. Support for reclassification is almost twice as high among the highest earners as among the lowest.

When asked where they purchased flea & tick products, fewer than a third (31.28%) of respondents cited a veterinary practice, with an almost equal number (29.94%) buying treatments from pet shops and pet superstores.

Nick Franks, Director of Johnson's Veterinary Products Ltd (pictured above), said: "This data makes it very clear that those on lower incomes, those without easy access to a vet and those already stretched by the cost of living, the people likely to be most affected by reclassification changes away from AVM-GSL (over the counter), are strongly opposed to it.

“The people most comfortable with the idea of an extra consultation fee are those who can most easily afford one. This affordability concern is borne out in the behavioural data. Among the lowest-income group, only 59% of pet owners said they would continue treating their pets as usual if reclassification occurred, compared with 71% of those earning over £75,000. Nearly one in four pet owners said reclassification would cause them to treat their pets less frequently or stop altogether.”

Critically, 11.4% of lower-income owners said they would seek alternative products through other channels, potentially leading to unregulated sources, compared to just 5.3% of higher earners. Reclassification would drive the most financially vulnerable households toward the channels with the least oversight and the least responsible use guidance.

The research also reveals the extent to which this review is proceeding without public awareness. Two-thirds of UK cat and dog owners (67%) had no idea the Government was reviewing whether these products might require a veterinary consultation or specialist involvement before purchase.

The research reveals a threat to footfall at pet retailers that has received little public attention, with 43% of respondents saying they would visit their local pet shop less often or stop visiting altogether for pet care purchases if flea & tick treatments were no longer available there. For products that are an important part of a retailer’s product mix, the commercial consequences for independent retailers and high streets extend well beyond the product category itself.

At the national level, more than twice as many pet owners support continued open access with improved responsible use guidance (54%) as support reclassification requiring professional consultation (26%); a 2:1 ratio that is consistent across genders and replicated across almost every income bracket.

Johnson's Veterinary Products Ltd has called on the VMD and the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee to ensure that the equalities impact of any regulatory change is properly assessed before conclusions are drawn.

PATS 2026, being staged at the NEC Birmingham on 27-29 September, will be the only place this year where retailers and buyers can discover all the latest pet and aquatics products launched onto the UK market.

The UK’s pet and aquatics trade show brings the entire industry together under one roof, and with exhibitors coming from over 30 countries, the exhibition promises to be bigger and more exciting than ever.

More than 140 brands will be exhibiting at PATS for the first time, giving visitors access to an unrivalled selection of products, innovations and emerging trends.

For pet retailers, aquatics specialists and garden centres, PATS offers the perfect opportunity to discover the products that will drive sales over the coming year. Thousands of items will be on display across the three-day exhibition, with a record number of new launches expected.

One of the show's most popular attractions, the New Product Showcase is set to attract an impressive line-up of entries, with exhibitors eager to unveil their latest innovations and gain recognition through the prestigious New Product Awards.

The PATS New Product Showcase and Awards are being backed by headline sponsors Leopard Co and media partners pbwnews.

Products entered into the Showcase will be judged on the opening day of the exhibition – Sunday 27th September – by a panel of independent retailers and industry experts. Winners of the Awards will be announced across multiple categories, highlighting the products expected to make the biggest impact in the market.

The New Starter Zone also continues to be a popular feature, offering a dedicated space for start-ups and businesses less than three years old, and it’s the perfect place for visitors to discover emerging brands.

The momentum behind PATS has never been stronger. The 2025 exhibition achieved the highest attendance figures in the show's history, firmly establishing its position as the industry's must-attend event. Across three days, 6,021 visitors attended, representing a remarkable 70% increase on the previous year.

The largest PATS event to date also welcomed significant international growth. Overseas attendance rose to 317 visitors, an increase of 169% year-on-year, while a record 445 exhibitors from 15 countries showcased the latest products, innovations and trends shaping the future of the pet and aquatics sector.

Pet nutrition brand Years has secured growth investment from Verlinvest and Five Seasons Ventures, two leading consumer investors with deep pet sector expertise. The partnership will support the company's next phase of expansion as it scales across retail channels and European markets.

Founded in 2023 by Darren Beale and Ivan Barashki, Years was built on a simple belief: that fresh, minimally processed wholefoods are meaningfully better for dogs’ long-term health and can be made more accessible for pet owners.

Its proprietary Cupboard Fresh technology enables the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients while delivering the benefits of ambient storage and distribution, resulting in nutritionally complete, wholefood meals with up to 18 months of shelf life. Designed by veterinary nutritionists, the meals prioritize healthy ageing, digestion, and tailored caloric needs.

Since launch, Years has shipped more than 12 million personalised meals, with each meal tailored to a dog's weight, age and nutritional profile. Most recently, the company expanded its retail footprint through a landmark partnership with Pets at Home, making its range available across more than 460 stores in the UK as well as online.

Co-founder and CEO Darren Beale said: “We founded Years to challenge the assumption that fresh pet food must come with logistical compromises. By combining research-backed nutritional quality with ambient convenience, we've created a new category that resonates with modern pet owners. With Verlinvest and Five Seasons Ventures as partners, we're positioned to accelerate our mission across Europe.”

Ivan Barashki, fellow co-founder and CTO, added: “That proposition is resonating well beyond the fresh feeding community, with 66% of our subscribers previously feeding their dogs kibble or wet food, meaning we are successfully redefining how pet owners approach their pets’ nutrition. With Verlinvest and Five Seasons Ventures behind us, we can take another giant step towards our mission of giving dog owners more years together with their dogs.”

Verlinvest and Five Seasons Ventures will work closely with Years' leadership to accelerate international expansion, deepen retail partnerships, and bring the brand's premium nutrition offering to new markets. Ivan Farneti, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Five Seasons Ventures, and Anaïs Jollivet, Senior Principal at Verlinvest, will join the Board of Years as the company enters its next phase of development.

Ben Black, Managing Director at Verlinvest, said: “We are delighted to partner with Darren, Ivan and the Years team to accelerate their mission of bringing nutritionally complete, fresh food in a scalable, convenient, ambient format to a wider audience. We are excited for them to join our extensive premium pet portfolio which started over 10 years ago with our investment in Chewy.com, and support their creation of the Cupboard Fresh category on an international basis – unlocking more Years with our pets.”

Ivan Farneti, Partner at Five Seasons Ventures, commented: “At Five Seasons Ventures, we have backed several successful dog and cat food brands and were early believers in the shift towards fresh pet nutrition and subscription models. We see Years as the natural next evolution of this category. By combining the nutritional benefits of fresh food with the convenience of ambient storage, Years is making premium pet nutrition accessible to a much broader consumer base while enabling true omnichannel distribution through both direct-to-consumer and retail channels. We believe Years has the potential to become one of the defining brands in the next generation of pet nutrition.”

Years serves dogs across all breeds and life stages through a range of personalised, chef-cooked wholefood recipes, including seasonal meat dishes, breed-specific functional toppers, and superfood supplements. The brand is inspired by leading wellbeing and health research and focused on advancing the next generation of pet nutrition through science, quality, and convenience.

Raymond James acted as financial advisor to Years in connection with the transaction.

Over the 12-month period, 14 new stores helped Jollyes deliver total revenue growth of 8.7% as sales hit £169m with transactions rising by 7%.

Over the same period, like-for-like sales growth excluding new stores gained momentum, growing by 4.3% as Jollyes made significant moves to deliver more value and convenience to its growing number of shoppers.

These included:

New and refreshed brands - the rollout of new own label brands such as ‘Simply Jollyes’, its first dedicated ‘value’ range and new product development for Lifestage, its core own label for cats and dogs.

Frozen Raw Food - The introduction of an extended frozen food range across its estate, bringing significant new brands such as Dibo to a growing number of customers who see the benefits of raw feeding.

Natural Treats - The launch of ‘pick and mix’ Natural Treats from 25 pence such as sausages, lamb braid, pig’s ears and pork rolls.

Uber Eats - An exclusive partnership with Uber Eats which allows pet owners across the UK to order everything from kibble to catnip in minutes.

At its recent store managers’ conference, Jollyes also laid out ambitious plans to underline its position as the leading challenger in a UK pet market that’s expected to grow by 11% to £4.3bn by 2030.

Those plans include an ambition to double its store estate in the next five years from 123 today to over 250. Jollyes recently released a list of over 160 target locations, should the right sites become available.

This growth ambition also extends to its ranges: in the last four weeks it has launched a new own label pet nutrition food range, Optimum Pet Health (OPH), to cut the cost of specialist diets recommended by vets.

It is also rolling out a new fresh food proposition, as pet owners demand even more choice for their pets.

The new fresh ranges, which build on the ‘humanisation’ trend in pets, include over 30 meals such as Turkey Triumph or Cod Crew from Tuggs, fresh cooked beef or salmon from Dibo, salmon, lamb, beef or chicken from Nutriment and Tasty Turkey or luscious lamb from Wilsons.

Adam Dury, Jollyes’ chief executive officer said: “This was a strong year for Jollyes as we transformed our offer, built our store network at pace and invested in our colleagues.

“But this is only the beginning – we’re determined to accelerate our growth as we bring Jollyes’ value to more places to serve more communities.

“This full-year growth reflects the strength of our value strategy and the growing loyalty of pet owners across the UK, giving us real confidence as we push ahead with our five-year plans to double the size of the business.

“Our compelling price leadership, combined with the expertise of our people and the continued development and innovation in our ranges, gives us an exciting platform for our ambitious plans to grow.”

Jollyes will open its 124th store in Derby on Friday 10 July with additional openings also planned in Evesham (14 August), Great Yarmouth (21 August), Sheffield (4 September), Seaham (11 September) and Mansfield (25 September).

Ceva Animal Health appoints Laura Correro as Senior Vice President for Companion Animals franchise and relocates Executive Vice President Jean-Marcel Ciet to the United States to spearhead the group's strategic push in one of the world's most dynamic pet healthcare markets...

The companion animals segment is no longer a growth opportunity for Ceva, it is a strategic priority. To match ambition with action, Ceva Animal Health, the world’s fifth largest animal health company, today announces two decisive moves: the appointment of Laura Correro as Senior Vice President for Companion Animals franchise, and the relocation of Jean-Marcel Ciet, Executive Vice President for Global Companion Animals and a member of Ceva's Executive Committee, to Bridgewater, New Jersey; the operational base of Ceva's commercial subsidiary in the United States.

Together, these appointments signal a clear commitment: Ceva is investing in the talent, the structure, and the geographic presence required to compete at the highest level in the companion animals market.

A seasoned global executive to lead the Companion Animals franchise

Laura Correro brings over 20 years of international experience in global marketing, sales, and P&L management across the animal health and consumer health industries. Most recently, as Head of Franchises Pet Therapeutics at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, she led global strategic marketing across veterinary channels, driving priority innovations and long-term pipeline development. Prior to that, she spent 12 years at Procter & Gamble, where she built deep expertise in iconic global brand management and over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical sector.

In her new role, Laura Correro will be responsible for defining, steering, and implementing the global strategy for Ceva's pet care segment. She will drive growth across the veterinary channel and accelerate the development of a multichannel product portfolio, with a particular focus on strengthening Ceva's presence in key international markets.

Laura Correro comments: "I am very pleased to join Ceva at this important juncture in its development. The Companion Animals business has strong assets and excellent growth prospects. In a rapidly evolving environment, I am convinced that innovation and close collaboration with animal care stakeholders will be essential to meeting market expectations. I look forward to contributing to this ambition alongside the Ceva teams."

Jean-Marcel Ciet relocates to the United States to drive strategic acceleration

To reinforce Ceva's ambition for the US market, Jean-Marcel Ciet, Executive Vice President for Global Companion Animals and a member of Ceva's Executive Committee, will relocate to Bridgewater, New Jersey. From this base, he will directly oversee the acceleration of Ceva's companion animals strategy in the United States, working in close coordination with local teams and supporting the group's broader ambitions in this critical market.

The United States represents the largest and most influential pet care market globally, within a North American region that alone accounts for over 40% of global market value. With its scale, innovation capacity, and highly developed veterinary ecosystem, it concentrates a significant share of industry momentum and sets the pace for many global trends. Establishing senior leadership locally will enable Ceva to stay close to market dynamics, strengthen execution, and better connect with customers and partners on the ground.

Jean-Marcel Ciet comments: "Laura's appointment is a major step forward for our franchise. She brings a strong combination of strategic and commercial experience that will help us continue to build our companion animals business over time.

"The US is the world's leading pet care market, and our decision to anchor senior leadership on the ground there reflects how seriously we take this opportunity. I am genuinely excited to work alongside Laura and our US teams to build something meaningful here."

A strategic reorientation backed at the highest level

This dual announcement reflects a broader strategic focus that has the full support of Ceva's senior leadership.

Sébastien Huron, Deputy CEO of Ceva Animal Health, comments: "The companion animals segment is a key area of development for Ceva, and the United States plays a central role in this landscape. With these decisions, we are strengthening both our leadership and our presence in a market that is highly competitive and fast-moving. Bringing Laura on board and positioning Jean-Marcel in the US reflects our intention to build our capabilities over time, step by step, to better serve our customers."

Some of Africa's hardest-working rescue conservation dogs are receiving specialist emotional wellbeing support thanks to a new partnership between Dogs4Wildlife and Pet Remedy.

Dogs4Wildlife, founded by Jacqui Law, originally from Markyate, Hertfordshire, and Darren Priddle from Taunton Somerset, trains and deploys specialist tracking and detection dogs that play a crucial role in anti-poaching operations. Their canine teams have helped locate more than 3,500 active snares, taken part in more than 500 operational responses, and patrol thousands of kilometres of protected landscapes while supporting wildlife rangers on the front line of conservation. The charity also invests heavily in ranger training, community education and animal welfare projects across Africa. This is where the partnership with Pet Remedy is paramount.

As part of the partnership, Pet Remedy products have been distributed beyond Dogs4Wildlife to two of its key conservation partners in Zimbabwe, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting the highest standards of animal welfare.

One of these organisations is the Friend Animal Foundation, which provides lifelong care for more than 460 rescued dogs and approximately 190 cats. The foundation is also working in partnership with Dogs4Wildlife to develop the Working Operational Rescue Dogs (WORD) Programme, an innovative initiative that identifies suitable rescue dogs and develops them into specialist conservation dogs capable of supporting wildlife protection operations.

The WORD Programme demonstrates that, with careful behavioural assessment, appropriate health screening, structured training and long-term welfare support, selected rescue dogs can be given a renewed purpose while helping to protect endangered wildlife. There are currently seven rescue dogs progressing through the programme, each being developed for future operational deployment alongside wildlife ranger teams.

Pet Remedy products have also been supplied to the Tikki Hywood Foundation, where they will be evaluated as part of ongoing wildlife rehabilitation work. One particular area of interest is whether the atomiser may assist in reducing stress-related behaviours in certain species, including situations where maternal stress can contribute to abandonment of offspring. Any observations will help inform future understanding of emotional wellbeing within wildlife rehabilitation settings.

Pet Remedy's generous donation will help support the welfare of these rescue dogs throughout their rehabilitation and training, while also benefiting the wider rescue population cared for by the Friend Animal Foundation.

Pet Remedy, based in Torquay, Devon, has donated its natural calming sprays and wipes, which work by helping pets and other animals remain calm without causing sedation. The products are designed to support emotional wellbeing during potentially stressful situations such as travel, veterinary treatment, operational deployments, changes in routine and unfamiliar environments.

Jacqui Law said: "Our dogs are every bit as important as the wildlife they help to protect. They work in demanding environments alongside dedicated wildlife rangers, often covering huge distances and responding to high-pressure situations.

"Looking after both their physical and emotional wellbeing is absolutely essential if they are to perform at their best while enjoying happy, fulfilling lives. We are delighted to be partnering with Pet Remedy, whose generous support will help ensure our incredible dogs receive the highest standards of care throughout their lives, and also improve the lives of so many other species in need of critical support in a rehabilitation environment.

Andrew Hale, emotional wellbeing expert at Pet Remedy, said: "Working dogs experience many of the same emotional challenges as companion animals, from travel and unfamiliar surroundings to changes in routine and heightened levels of activity.

"Supporting emotional wellbeing is not simply about reducing stress, it is about enabling animals to feel safe enough to cope, adapt and perform naturally. We are proud to support Dogs4Wildlife and the extraordinary conservation dogs whose work is helping to protect some of the world's most endangered wildlife."

Qualified veterinary nurse Rachel Bean, from Grotton, Greater Manchester, recently travelled to Africa to deliver specialist canine first aid training to the charity's dog handlers.

She said: "It was an incredible privilege to work alongside the Dogs4Wildlife teams and share practical canine first aid skills with the handlers caring for these amazing dogs.

"They rely on their canine partners every day in challenging environments, so ensuring handlers have the confidence to recognise injuries, respond quickly in an emergency and provide the very best care is vital.

"It's fantastic to see organisations like Pet Remedy recognising that emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical health. Together, these dogs are being given every opportunity to thrive while carrying out such valuable conservation work."

Dogs4Wildlife currently supports conservation projects across several African countries, combining highly trained conservation dogs with advanced ranger training, specialist equipment and community initiatives designed to protect endangered wildlife while improving opportunities for local people. In some operational areas, the charity says its canine units have helped achieve reductions in poaching of up to 75 per cent.

RAWR, a disruptive new freeze-dried pet nutrition brand, has officially launched in the UK, built on a simple collective belief: pets deserve radically better than ultra-processed junk food.

By pairing the unmatched nutritional power of real, raw meat with the effortless convenience of a shelf-stable format, RAWR claims it is rewriting the rules of premium pet care for dogs and cats – without the mess, the math, or the compromise.

This debut coincides with a monumental evolution in domestic animal nutrition. Although the domestic raw sector continues to surge – reaching a projected valuation of £421 million – RAWR aims to disrupt the broader high-end pet food landscape.

Engineered for both seasoned raw advocates and conventional dry-food owners eager for a health transformation, RAWR provides a seamless, high-integrity alternative for those demanding unparalleled nutritional quality.

RAWR enters the market with:

A 10-Strong Launch Range: A curated lineup of complete meals and single-ingredient treats engineered specifically for modern dogs and cats.

Nutritional Integrity via Freeze-Drying: Using a gentle freeze-drying process instead of high-heat cooking or heavy extrusion preserves up to 97% of the ingredients' naturally occurring nutrients, locking in the real meat flavors pets are biologically wired to crave.

High Digestibility, Zero Mess: Formulated to be far more digestible than a traditional carb-heavy diet, RAWR actively supports vibrant skin, a shiny coat, and maximum vitality - delivered in a premium, travel-friendly, resealable pouch.

Real Meat, No Fillers: Every recipe is crafted from 85% prime-cut meat, heart, and liver. No mysterious rendered meat meals, no grains, and absolutely zero fillers.

Raw Made Safe: While vets traditionally steer clear of raw diets due to bacterial risks, RAWR features a human-grade, WHO-approved pathogen elimination technology. This advanced safety step gently eliminates harmful bacteria without heat, allowing vets to confidently back the brand.

Global-Scale Standards: Products are manufactured in an EU-approved, state-of-the-art facility with an annual production capacity of 6,000 tonnes, ensuring the impeccable safety, quality, and consistency expected of a world-class brand.

“Pets have become part of the family, but the food most of them eat is still ultra-processed. RAWR exists to change that - real meat, gently freeze-dried, formulated by vets. Our mission is simple: raise the standard for everyday pet food, and make raw nutrition effortless,” said Fiamma Li, Founder and CEO of RAWR.

Boasting a 12-month shelf life, the range of meals and treats are now available nationwide online at www.rawrpet.com

Public relations consultant Angela Baker has urged pet brands to consider entering pet industry awards, claiming it is one of the smartest moves a business can make.

Here are Angela’s tips on entering industry awards…

Angela said: “I’ve just had my eleventh client win a major pet industry award. Waita Pets has taken home the Emerging Brand Category in the Pet Product Marketing Retail Awards 2026 after a period of intensive PR that helped secure major retail listings and significantly boost awareness. In a crowded and emotionally driven sector like the pet industry, standing out is tough. Brands compete in a marketplace where trust, welfare standards and authenticity matter just as much as innovation. Yet one opportunity consistently delivers visibility, credibility and commercial impact: entering industry awards. Far from being a vanity exercise, awards have become one of the highest‑ROI marketing and PR tools available to pet businesses of all sizes. So, with the Pet Industry Federation Awards on the horizon, is it worth entering?

“From my experience organising award events in previous in‑house marketing roles, the benefits begin long before the trophy is handed out. Award organisers, judges, sponsors and fellow entrants see your work the moment you submit, putting your brand on the radar of influential people who may never have encountered it otherwise. As the business magazine Forbes notes, ‘Business awards can be hugely valuable, acting as third‑party endorsements telling your customers, partners, and stakeholders that your business excels in its field’. In a sector built on trust, that endorsement carries weight.

“But entering awards isn’t just about recognition – it’s about storytelling. The process forces businesses to articulate what makes them different: their impact, innovation, welfare commitment and results. Strong entries rely on evidence, not anecdotes. Sales growth, testimonials, case studies, welfare improvements and retailer feedback transform an entry from ‘we’re great’ into ‘here’s the proof’. This clarity strengthens pitches, marketing campaigns and retailer conversations long after the awards season ends.

“Choosing the right category is crucial. Successful entrants are selective, focusing on categories where they can clearly demonstrate measurable impact and alignment with the award’s values. For public‑voted awards, organisation matters more than popularity — simple campaigns using newsletters, social posts, QR codes and in‑store signage can dramatically increase engagement.

“The real magic happens after shortlisting. Award badges, social graphics, press releases, website updates and packaging stickers can fuel months of marketing activity. Even non‑winners benefit from the credibility boost. As Forbes highlights, ‘It’s not just about the trophy; it’s about the credibility it lends your brand’.

“Ultimately, entering pet industry awards isn’t about applause – it’s about elevating your brand, sharpening your story and opening doors. For businesses that approach awards strategically, the return is far greater than the entry form.”

Following recent regulatory approval, Varenzin is now available to veterinarians across the UK, and offers pet owners a first-of-its-kind oral suspension that can be administered daily at home.

Built on Nobel Prize-winning science, Varenzin is a veterinary medicine in a new class designed to stimulate a cat’s natural endogenous erythropoietin production (EPO), which is often reduced in cats with kidney disease. The active substance in Varenzin, molidustat, belongs to a novel class of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor Prolyl Hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitors, and works by activating the body’s natural response to low oxygen levels, boosting EPO production and thereby stimulating red blood cell production by the bone marrow.

“HIF-PH inhibitors enhance the natural production of EPO rather than delivering a pharmacological dose of an exogenous protein,” said Professor Jonathan Elliott, MA VetMB PhD CertSAC DipECVPT FRCVS, Professor in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary College in London.

“This approach is likely more physiological, helping the body restore a normal balance in red blood cell production and resulting in fewer side effects compared to administering EPO analogues. It’s quite an exciting innovation to have, and it’s great that there is now an authorised veterinary product available containing a HIF-PH inhibitor which is approved to treat cats with CKD.”

In clinical studies, 68% of cats achieved treatment success after one month. Varenzin is also a once-daily fish oil flavoured formulation, with a strong acceptance rate of 88%, supporting ease of administration and long-term compliance.

Jacqui Skelly, Elanco’s Head of Veterinary Technical Services, UK & Ireland, comments: “Anaemia is a well-recognised and clinically significant complication of chronic kidney disease in cats, particularly as they age, and can impact quality of life and disease progression. The launch of Varenzin provides veterinarians and pet owners with a new option to help manage this condition earlier and more conveniently at home.

"Innovations in veterinary medicine like this are increasingly important in supporting quality of life and improving long-term outcomes, especially as pet ownership increases – the UK cat population is now estimated at 10.2 million – and cats live longer.”

CKD is one of the most common conditions affecting older cats, with prevalence increasing significantly with age. As more cats live longer in the UK, managing chronic conditions such as CKD and its complications, including anaemia, is an increasing challenge for veterinarians and pet owners.

Even small declines in haematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) are associated with reduced survival and faster CKD progression in cats, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention. With Varenzin, veterinarians now have the ability to begin managing anaemia as soon as a diagnosis is made.

The launch of Elanco’s newest product, Varenzin, is another milestone in its mission to elevate pet health every day. It reinforces its commitment to supporting veterinarians in improving outcomes for pets, and helping cats live longer, healthier lives.

For more information, please visit: https://my.elanco.com/us/campaign/varenzin

Following the success of the strategic partnership signed in 2025, Zoomark BolognaFiere Cosmoprof SpA and Petzoo Eurasia Ulusal Fuarcilik are taking their collaboration to the next level and embarking on a new milestone in their shared international growth journey.

This enhanced collaboration represents another important step in BolognaFiere Group’s long-term vision, which will see the Group launching a brand-new pet exhibition in Turkey from 2028, thanks to the support and well-renowned reputation of Ulusal Fuarcilik, Turkey’s leading exhibition organiser in the pet industry.

In the meantime, Zoomark will actively support Petzoo Eurasia’s international marketing and sales activities during the 2026 and 2027 editions of the exhibition, further strengthening the event’s global reach.

By joining expertise, international networks and market knowledge, Zoomark aims to create, with the strategic support of Petzoo Eurasia, an even stronger platform for exhibitors, buyers and industry professionals, fostering new business opportunities and facilitating access to one of the world’s most dynamic and fast-growing pet markets.

“The development of international exhibition platforms is a key pillar of BolognaFiere Group’s growth strategy,” commented Gianpiero Calzolari, President of BolognaFiere. “The strengthening of our cooperation with Ulusal Fuarcilik and Petzoo Eurasia reflects our commitment to investing in high-potential markets and building bridges between industries and communities. This new project will represent an important step in our internationalisation journey and further reinforce our role as a global connector for the pet industry.”

“We are proud to deepen our relationship with Zoomark and to embark on this new chapter together,” said Selçuk Çetin, CEO of Ulusal Fuarcilik and General Manager of Petzoo Eurasia.“The collaboration has already generated significant interest from international stakeholders and has confirmed the strategic importance of Turkey as a meeting point between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.”

“This new phase of collaboration demonstrates how meaningful partnerships can evolve into ambitious long-term projects,” said Luisa Bersanetti, Exhibition Manager of Zoomark. “Over the past years we have witnessed strong interest from companies looking to expand their presence in Turkey and the wider MENA region.By intensifying our support through international marketing and sales activities over the next two editions, we are laying the foundations for an even more international and interconnected platform that will pave the way to further evolutions.”

The announcement further reinforces Zoomark’s mission of connecting minds and shaping the future of the pet industry by creating international platforms that facilitate innovation, knowledge exchange and business development in high-potential markets around the world.

Looking out of the windows, pacing around the vehicle or jumping between seats may seem harmless, but these behaviours can increase arousal and create unnecessary stress for both the dog and the driver. Travelling safely isn’t just about preventing injuries. It’s about creating an environment where dogs can feel calm, secure and confident, allowing them to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

“Many inexpensive restraints and seat belt attachments give owners a false sense of security. When travelling with children, we don’t rely on a seat belt alone. We use a dedicated, safety-tested child seat designed to protect them. I believe our dogs deserve the same consideration. A properly secured crate isn’t just a way to restrain a dog, it’s a safe space that protects their physical and emotional wellbeing and helps them travel calmly and confidently."
