UK pet company hits back at raw food claims

Leading pet food supplier Natures Menu has hit back at claims made in a national daily newspaper that ‘deadly bugs in trendy raw pet foods pose a risk to owners’. Craig Taylor, Managing Director, told Pet Trade Xtra: “We believe that the risk to customers in handling raw pet food is no higher than that of handling raw meat for their own consumption, providing basic hygiene rules are implemented."

Leading pet food supplier Natures Menu has hit back at claims made in a national daily newspaper that ‘deadly bugs in trendy raw pet foods pose a risk to owners’.

The Daily Mail ran a story on its website on Saturday reporting that Public Health England had issued a warning about raw food for pets making humans seriously ill.

But Craig Taylor, Managing Director at Natures Menu, told Pet Trade Xtra this week: “The recent Public Health England investigation has raised some important points for the industry and as Europe’s leading experts in raw we felt it important to add our wealth of experience to the debate.

“Over our heritage spanning 37 years, we feel there is no evidence to suggest that pets fed on a frozen raw diet are more likely to spread bacteria to humans," added Craig (pictured right).

“We of course always promote good hygiene practices for raw feeding and work closely with the PFMA on raw guidelines here in the UK. Furthermore our industry is carefully controlled by the relevant authorities and submits to all testing required, as well as abiding by all relevant EU legislation.

“We therefore believe that the risk to customers in handling raw pet food is no higher than that of handling raw meat for their own consumption, providing basic hygiene rules are implemented.

“Raw feeding responsibly is completely safe and pets love and thrive on a natural diet of quality ingredients, with countless customers and vets reporting significant health benefits, and we are determined to continue to educate pet owners and the industry on the benefits of responsible raw feeding.”

The Daily Mail story reported that Whitehall scientists said feeding dogs fashionable raw meat diets puts their owners at risk.

In its latest report, Public Health England said a food poisoning outbreak in August 2017 left four people seriously ill. One unnamed victim died of acute kidney failure.

The common link between all four cases – in the North East and South East – was contact with dogs.

The Daily Mail reported that all four were struck down by the same STEC bug – shiga toxin-producing E coli – and three dogs were fed on raw meat diets containing green tripe, the untreated contents of cows’ stomachs.

PHE said that its report suggested ‘an increasing trend in potential risk to humans from raw pet food’.

Big pet companies behind move to ban advert, claims Pooch & Mutt

Pooch & Mutt claims it has received demands from the Metal Packaging Manufacturers' Association to remove an advert for its new cartons of wet food for dogs. The company says its packaging is 80% more environmentally friendly than cans and urges customers to ‘Ditch the Can. Help the Planet’.

According to Pooch and Mutt, the move by the MPMA has been triggered by big pet food companies who dominate the market with canned dog food.

Guy Blaskey, founder of Pooch & Mutt, said: “This is not the first time we have received threats around our marketing.

“The latest campaign for our wet food cartons urges customers to ‘Ditch the Can. Help the Planet’, as cartons are proven to be 80% more environmentally friendly than cans.

“It’s disappointing to get threats from MPMA. This is probably the least controversial campaign that we have done. If I was running one of these big pet food companies and losing millions in sales year on year I’d spend more time getting my own house in order. It’s almost a compliment that they consider us such a threat.”

With the environment such a hot topic at the moment, the Pooch & Mutt boss added: “For far too long big companies have put profits ahead of the planet and we are all becoming increasingly aware of how unsustainable this is.

“We need new approaches in a lot of industries to start fixing these issues and it tends to fall to smaller, more innovative, caring companies to develop these products and get them to market. These companies then need to promote these products. The new products and marketing are a threat to big, established companies, who have been resting on their laurels for far too long.”

In the year to 31st March 2018, the innovative company, which reached its landmark 10th anniversary in 2018, saw sales grow by over 30% to become a £50 million retail brand.

Looking ahead to 2019, further expansion into international markets, including Europe, USA and Asia is planned, together with further product innovation.

David Milner, CEO, says: “Lily’s Kitchen is at a very exciting moment, pioneering natural pet food growth in the UK and abroad.

"The investment we have made to date will support the business at this inflection point and put it on a strong footing going forward.

"Consumers can see a difference when they switch their pets to our food and this recognition continues to bring new consumers into our brand.”

Visitors to AQUA 2019 in October can expect a busy and exciting show as the exhibition hall at Telford International Centre will be packed with companies showcasing new products.

Show organiser Annie Foord said: “I’m happy to report that the UK’s major companies are again heading for Telford and we will be welcoming an impressive number of international businesses, who regard AQUA as their major platform to showcase products to UK buyers.”

Time to Spring clean your pet, says Vince the Vet

Vince the Vet launches new campaign ‘Time To Spring Clean Your Pet’ to combat continued exposure to harmful environmental chemicals.

Vince the Vet launches new campaign ‘Time To Spring Clean Your Pet’ to combat continued exposure to harmful environmental chemicals.

Dogs and cats are exposed to an eye-watering number of toxic substances daily, which can damage internal organs and harm health in many different ways.

The ‘Time To Spring Clean Your Pet’ campaign has been launched to raise public awareness of the risks this poses to health, and provide pet owners with a safe, natural and effective way of cleansing their dogs and cats bodies, to support long term health.

It will run for the first quarter of the year, will be supported by a media campaign and accompanying product literature, and will focus on the use of two new Vince the Vet Pet Remedies Intestinal Cleanse and Organ Cleanse plus a few simple lifestyle changes.

The scale of the problem

There are literally tens of thousands of chemicals used in the home, industries, agriculture and food production, with the number increasing by 2000 new compounds per year (The Natural Environment Research Council).

These include:

  • pesticide resides and chemical additives in food
  • herbicides on pavements, in parks and on fields
  • poisons in products used in and around the home
  • nerve toxins and similar compounds used in tick, flea and worming products
  • hormones, antibiotics and other drugs employed in meat production
  • industrial waste and petrochemicals virtually everywhere

Ill-effects

Many environmental and dietary chemicals have been linked to a wide range of health problems, including cancer, digestive problems, bone marrow disturbances, inflammation of the bowels, weakening of the immune system, seizures and damage to the major organs (especially the kidneys, liver, bowel and skin).

The risk is higher in pets

The harmful effect of environmental chemicals is magnified in dogs and cats because of their relatively small size, and the swallowing of substances that collect on paws, fur and skin during self-grooming.

Regular use of toxic parasiticides can also harm health over time.

'Spring Cleaning'

For pets to live as long and as happy a life as they can, it is vitally important that their internal organs remain as healthy as possible.

Unfortunately, given the large number of environmental and dietary chemicals faced by most dogs and cats every day, a great strain is placed on the body's ability to break down and eliminate these substances, to minimise the damage they can cause. This burden largely falls on the main organs of detoxification (the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin).

Regular cleansing is therefore, important to:

  • support the normal, healthy functioning of internal organs (the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin in particular) for as long as possible
  • prevent the build up of toxins in the body
  • minimise the risks posed by toxic chemicals
  • maintain overall health and well-being

A simple, safe, gentle, natural and effective cleansing regime, is to give the new Vince the Vet Pet Remedies Intestinal Cleanse and Organ Cleanse regularly throughout the year.

Pet shop owner left heartbroken as stolen Landrover is written-off

A pet centre owner was left heartbroken after his Landrover Freelander, used to rescue animals, was found damaged beyond repair, reports the Mid Sussex Times.

Steve Edgington, who owns Hassocks Pet Centre near Brighton, hoped he would find his beloved 4x4 but his dream was shattered when he received a call from the police on Tuesday. The vehicle had been stolen on Christmas Eve.

He said: “I had a call from the police to say they had recovered my vehicle in Brighton – it was apparently involved in a police incident, and it has been written off.

“It is such a shame – it is devastating, there is always that hope when something has been stolen or you have lost something – that you are going to get it back in one piece.

“I always kept her nice – she was beautiful, she had just passed her MOT – it is heartbreaking that it has ended like this.”

Responding to consumer demand, Chuckit! is introducing the third addition to its popular Rugged range for tougher breeds with the brand-new Rugged Fetch Wheel - designed to withstand the roughest play from stronger dogs.

Increasing its offer and providing retailers with even more ways to cater to the needs of this specific market, the new Chuckit! Available in two bright colours for easy retrieval, the high-quality over-molded TPR ridges ensure dogs can easily pick up and grip the toy during play without puncturing the material.

Will Baggaley, Brand Manager for Chuckit!, comments: “As consumers continue to seek out and invest in higher quality products that are built to last, expanding our options for tougher breeds was important to us.

The Rugged Fetch Wheel is available to buy now at RRP £14.99. For more information on Chuckit! visit the website: http://chuckit-toys.co.uk/stockist-map.

EUKANUBA releases children’s book to celebrate canine companionship

Leading pet food brand EUKANUBA has released ‘A Pawfect Pair’, a children’s story book that celebrates the benefits of people living life together with their dogs...

Leading pet food brand EUKANUBA has released ‘A Pawfect Pair’, a children’s story book that celebrates the benefits of people living life together with their dogs.

The heart-warming story follows the adventures of EUKANUBA Live Life Well Together Ambassadors, 17-year-old Roxy Carr and her Cockapoo, Poppy, as they search for the important things in life – companionship and connection.

By sharing their tale of dog ownership and the friendships they’ve encountered along the way, EUKANUBA hopes to inspire the next generation about the benefits of dog ownership and raise awareness of the special relationship they can experience by living life with a four-legged friend.

The story supports findings that dog ownership in Britain is trending younger than ever. According to a survey of 2,000 UK dog owners, 90% of Generation Z already own and are wholly responsible for their own pet dog by the age of 16, unlike their parents’ generation, where for over half, the dog was the family pet and responsibility of their parents.

This survey also highlighted that the always on smartphone generation (born between 1996-2016) are suffering from a crisis of stress and social isolation, with depression, anxiety and loneliness the key pressure points.

However, it seems there is a solution in man’s best friend as young Britons seek solace in their four-legged companions. In fact, the desire for companionship is driving pet ownership for almost half (46%) of dog owners between the ages of 16-19, while an overwhelming majority (84%) claim their dog provides vital emotional support to help them face every day stress and pressures.

Commenting on the activity, Kellie Ceccarelli, EUKANUBA’s Veterinary Expert says: “The survey results not only show that dog ownership is important to Britain’s youth, but also just how disconnected many young adults feel.

"At EUKANUBA, we’re passionate about helping owners of every age to live life well together with their dogs. While caring for a dog is a responsibility that should only be taken on by those who have the time and patience, the results highlight how powerful the connection between humans and dogs truly is, and how beneficial this relationship can be for positive mental health.”

This is one of the reasons why we created the book, ‘A Pawfect Pair’, to highlight the special bond between dog and owner, as well as showing what’s truly important in today’s fast paced world. By telling the inspiring story of Roxy and her friends on the EUKANUBA Ambassador Programme, we want to inspire pet owners of all ages to share a long healthy life with their dogs.”

The ‘Pawfect Pair’, Roxy and Poppy, are EUKANUBA Live Life Well Together Ambassadors. As part of this activity, Poppy, alongside four other beautiful dogs trialled EUKANUBA’s new and improved recipes for 12 weeks to see if the new formulae could help to improve their dogs’ optimal body condition.  The results clearly demonstrated the difference that EUKANUBA’s tailored life stage nutrition can make to dogs of all ages.

Retailers can find out more about the Ambassadors’ journeys at www.eukanuba.co.uk/ambassadors, where they will also find a digital copy of the children’s book available to download for free from January 2019. Shoppers can also be in with a chance of winning a FREE signed (hardcopy of the) book by visiting the EUKANUBA stand at Crufts 2019.

Beaphar UK gets set for most exciting PATS Sandown to date

Beaphar UK will be returning to PATS Sandown with lots of exciting things for retailers, including the chance to earn 8 CPD points, including the chance to earn eight CPD points during and  interactive seminar will focus on Parasite Control and Prevention by the company's Georgina Shrimpton...

Beaphar UK will be returning to PATS Sandown with lots of exciting things for retailers; the UK launch of their new branding, a chance to win a range of their fabulous new products, and their return to the PATS seminar stage, with this year’s presentation offering SQPs the opportunity to earn 8 CPD points.

Presented by Georgina Shrimpton RVN, Beaphar’s Technical Support Executive, the interactive seminar will focus on Parasite Control and Prevention. As a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a wealth of hands on experience, Georgina is the ideal choice to lead this seminar, having personally encountered the kinds of questions pet-owners may have about parasites on a day-to-day basis in practice.

Centring on fleas, ticks and worms, the seminar will provide attendees with an in-depth look at these parasites, as well as give information on dealing with perceived inefficacy/product failure and the safe supply of medicines.

Georgina said, “I’m really excited to be speaking at PATS Sandown 2019. A key part of my role at Beaphar is making sure we deliver the most informative and up-to-date information to our customers and everyone that works in the pet industry, so that they can pass this on to pet-owners.

“This was one of the key reasons behind reviewing the seminar content from last year, and I am delighted that in doing so we can not only offer a seminar that is more informative, but one that is now worth 8 CPD points.”

PATS Sandown 2019 is also the setting of the UK launch of Beaphar’s new branding, which was first revealed to the pet trade at Interzoo 2018.
Dr Sue Huggett, UK Business Manager, Beaphar UK, said: “PATS is the highlight of the UK pet trade calendar, so there is no better place to launch our new branding and exciting new product ranges to our customers.

“The new branding is eye-catching, attention grabbing and more emotionally appealing to pet-owners. Our new Beaphar CatComfort® range is a great example of this, and the show will be a good opportunity for all PATS visitors to visit our stand and see for themselves just how impactful the new Beaphar branding can be in their store.

TICKLESS introduces the new generation of ultrasonic flea and tick repellent at the PATS Sandown next month.

The TICKLESS device emits a series of ultrasonic pulses that are imperceptible to humans, pets or wildlife, but interfere with the ability of ticks and fleas to orient themselves.

Environmentally friendly, contains no chemicals or fragrances, making it perfectly safe to use for everyone.

The TICKLESS technology underwent rigorous testing and was proven effective by a clinical study at the University of Camerino, Italy.

The TICKLESS Pet keeps ticks and fleas away without the use of dangerous chemicals. By fastening the easy-to-use, tiny device onto your cat or dog’s collar, parasites can be kept away for up to 6-12 months after activation, leaving you and your pet free to enjoy nature.

New product, the TICKLESS Mini, is aimed for small dog breeds while TICKLESS Cat is the company’s first-ever device particularly aimed for our feline friends. Both models are are also rechargeable.

“TICKLESS Cat and Mini represent the new generation of ultrasonic flea and tick protection. It’s stronger, more effective yet this is the smallest ultrasonic repeller on the market today,” said Mr. Daniel Kiss, CEO and owner of the TICKLESS brand.

“We have been doing a lot of research within the pet industry and realised that owners are really worried about toxics in such repellent products. TICKLESS contains no chemicals or fragrances, making it perfectly safe to use for pets and humans alike.”

Turn Back Thyme!  from UK herbal supplement specialists CSJ has been developed with the older dog in mind, and owners are having their say about it…

"Palatable effective"

I got this for my two older boys aged 10 and 14. The 10yr old is particularly fussy with food, so I was apprehensive about adding herbs - I should not have worries - he loves them and has really found a new spring in his step.

"It Does What it Says !!!"

I have a 14 year old Patterdale who has been on Turn Back Thyme for the past 6 months, she now seems to think she is a two year old! I need some to keep up with her.

CSJ say: “'Turn Back Thyme!' contains herbs for all round health but has particular ingredients aimed at the older dog, including Blackcurrant & Thyme, Rosehips, Mint, Milk Thistle, Dandelion and Cayenne.”

The daily dose of this gentle blend should be added to the dog's dinner - either once a day or split into two….and can be added to RAW or conventional diets.

CSJ say, “The feedback is tremendous and we’re delighted to have been able to help our customers and their beloved dogs.”

Fears auctioned-off pet food could flood the market

Bags of James Wellbeloved pet food with very short use-by-dates have appeared on an auctioneer’s website, prompting fears that discounted items could be flooding on to the market place.

Pet Trade Xtra was alerted to the online auction of various lots, including a selection of pet food, by a reader worried that the sale of old stock could spiral out of control.

“I would like to make you and your readers aware that there will be hundreds of sacks James Wellbeloved cat food on the market with very short use-by-dates. These items are coming through a Nottinghamshire auction site,” he said.

The pet food was advertised on the website of John Pye Auctions at the company’s Nottingham branch.

John Pye Auctions said: “This is a Public Auction, not a consumer or retail sale. Lots include second-hand and used goods, sold as seen with no guarantees which is why public viewing is available and recommended.

The auctioneer went on to state there was “a wide variety of lots to include home electronics, gaming earphones, bluetooth speakers and bathroom fixtures and fittings plus laptop computers and selection of pet food.”

Public viewing took place on Saturday with the auction concluding on Monday.

Pet Trade Xtra tried to contact James Wellbeloved to see if the pet food company was aware of the auction of bags of its cat food but as yet we haven’t received a response.

Details of the auction can be found here http://www.johnpye.co.uk/project/public-auctions-nottm-7/

A woman has claimed she found a dead mouse in a bag of pet food bought from a Poundland store in Aberdeen.

Caitlin Cameron says she found the mouse in a newly-opened bag of rabbit muesli.

And it prompted her to write the following on her Facebook page: “I am ragin!!! So I got my rabbit food from Poundland… not thinking anything of it.

“I open the packet to feed Simba and start putting some in her bowl and here comes a dead mouse.

“Don’t buy any food for your pets! I’ll be phoning the company it’s a joke I’m ragin! Plz share.”

A Poundland spokeswoman told the Evening Express newspaper: “We’re sorry to hear of this. The store has spoken to Caitlin and refunded her £2. We’re clearly as keen as her to know from our supplier how this happened.”

Sustainable dog food set to revolutionise pet market

A trailblazing new dog food - believed to be the most sustainable ever - is set to revolutionise the pet food market when it launches this month. A trailblazing new dog food - believed to be the most sustainable ever - is set to revolutionise the pet food market when it launches this month.

Made of nutritious insect protein combined with oats, potato and natural botanicals, Yora is a healthy new dog food that contains no growth hormones or antibiotics.

Globally, pets consume around 20% of the world’s meat and fish, which is set to grow further with the trend for feeding human grade meat to dogs and cats.

For years, environmental experts have proposed insects as the food source that can end world hunger without harming the planet. Insects are unbelievably nutritious - packed with essential proteins, fats, minerals and amino acids - and are even easier to digest than chicken, so they’re perfect for pets with sensitive tummies.

Livestock farming contributes 18% of human produced greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and pet food consumption is responsible for up to 64 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

Insects use a fraction of the resources to farm and Yora’s grubs are reared in a brand new, high tech £18 million facility in Holland. The grubs are extremely efficient and even consume recycled vegetable matter that would otherwise go uneaten.

When compared to beef farming, Yora’s grubs need just 2% of the land and 4% of the water to produce each kg of protein, which means they cause 96% less greenhouse emissions. The insects grow naturally at a rapid pace, reaching full size in just 14 days, so there’s no need for growth hormones or antibiotics.

The insect protein in Yora also offers a higher quality protein than the by-products found in most pet foods. Yora features nutritious ingredients like kale, seaweed and chicory which all have added benefits for dogs including Vitamin C, improved digestion and anti-inflammatory properties.

Yora is supported by a team of veterinary experts including TV vet Dr. Rory Cowlam who said: “Yora provides a healthy, high protein alternative to conventional kibble.  It’s hypoallergenic, and free from antibiotics and growth hormones. Pets love the taste - plus it’s great for the planet.

“As a keen conservationist and dog lover, I am incredibly excited by the enormous potential for this dog food to reduce our pets’ collective carbon pawprint.”

Tom Neish (above), founder of Yora, comments: “Animals and humans have been eating insects for over five million years and we believe Yora is the future of pet food. We have trialled 29 recipes to find the perfect combination of great tasting ingredients and are very proud of the end result.

“Yora enables dog owners to take the lead in giving their dog a nutritious, tasty food whilst having a positive impact on the environment.”

Available from major pet stores in the UK in January, Yora will cost £14.99 per 1.5kg bag (£1.80 per day) or £49.99 per 6kg bag (£1.49 per day). To find out more, visit the website, search #TakeOurLead

Yora will be exhibiting at PATS Sandown on February 10-11.
