Secrets of a dog’s long, healthy and active life
Eukanuba fuelling dogs that exceed their breed’s typical lifespan
As pet nutritionists, Eukanuba is dedicated to giving owners as many happy days with their beloved pets as possible – even beyond their average lifespan.
As pet nutritionists, Eukanuba is dedicated to giving owners as many happy days with their beloved pets as possible – even beyond their average lifespan.
Extraordinary lifetimes Eukanuba’s 10 year observation, featuring 39 Labradors, focused on the impact of nutrition on canine health and longevity and the results were unprecedented. Utah, aged 17 years old, lived longer than his breed’s typical lifespan of 12 years. The group of 39 Labradors, the stars of 10 years of observations made by Eukanuba on its state-of-the-art pet care centre on the impact of nutrition on canine health and longevity. The results were unprecedented – nearly 90%* of the Labradors fed Eukanuba, together with receiving appropriate care lived 30% longer than the breed’s typical 12 years life expectancy. Isn’t this something you want to pass onto your customers?
Experts believe this has redefined what successful ageing looks like. ‘The Long Life Advisory Council’, a panel of globally renowned veterinary scientists said: “Only Eukanuba has shown that their nutritional innovations can help more dogs fulfill their genetic potential and achieve exceptional longevity. The premium nutrition in Eukanuba, combined with quality veterinary and daily care, has made it possible for dogs to live healthy, long, and more vibrant lives."
“As a veterinary surgeon, I would expect a Labrador, like Utah, Iowa or Clown, to show serious signs of ageing at around 8 or 9 years old. When I saw these dogs that were 15, 16, 17 years old – and they look and move like 9, 10, 12 year olds – you really realise that this study is actually bigger than just numbers on paper.” Steve Dean, BVetMed, DVR, MRCVS. Veterinarian and former Chairman of the UK Kennel Club, UK

The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association has announced the retirement of its long-standing Chief Executive Keith Davenport after 25 years in the post.
Keith was recruited to help set up and run a new trade association, originally called OFI UK, to tackle a number of big issues facing the industry at the beginning of the 90s. Renamed OATA in 1997, he has taken the organisation from strength to strength, raising standards and awareness over a quarter of a century.
The trade association will now start the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive and the role will be advertised shortly.
“The OATA Directors are very sad that Keith will be leaving us but we understand that he considers it’s the right time to hand over the reins after a quarter of a century protecting and promoting the industry,” said OATA Chairman Mark Evenden.
“Keith came to us as a fresh-faced lecturer at Sparsholt Agricultural College where he taught the ornamental fish-related courses. He was recruited by Richard Sankey and Dave Keeley to help set up and take forward a new trade association to tackle a number of big issues threatening the industry in the 1990s. And frankly he hasn’t stopped since!
“The fact that our members – and indeed all companies that work within the ornamental aquatic industry – are still doing business is largely down to Keith’s tenacious efforts on our behalf. He’s represented UK businesses at national, European and even world level and we estimate that because of his work he’s saved the industry more than £250 million in that time. That’s quite an achievement but after two and half decades he’s probably earned a bit of a rest!
“We’ll certainly miss him but we have known this was on the cards so we’re now planning for the future. We’ll be advertising the role in the very near future and Keith will be with us as we plan a smooth transition for the new Chief Executive.”
Keith added: “After 25 years at OATA I feel it’s time to move on and do other things. It is purely down to the passage of time. It’s a great opportunity for OATA to take forward its development and increase its ability to promote and protect its members and the industry as a whole. I have a period of notice to serve so I’ll be around for some time and I hope I’ll continue to receive the tremendous support that I have to date and I will continue to do my best for OATA.”

Nestlé Purina held its first ever ‘Better with Pets’ European Forum in Brussels, Belgium, highlighting the invaluable contribution of pets in society and championing a better world for people and pets.
The pet food company also announced its Purina in Society Commitments - the company’s 10 comprehensive initiatives to help create a world where people and pets can be better together. These commitments are the first of its kind by a pet care company, paving the way for the future.
Research on the available scientific evidence presented by Purina at the Forum, revealed that pets deliver positive benefits to our health and wellbeing, from reducing stress and loneliness, to improving self-esteem and mental health conditions. However, there is a missed opportunity when it comes to the positive impact of pets and their role in society and Purina believe more needs to be done to promote, celebrate and protect pets’ valuable role in our world. “Nestlé Purina believes that when people and pets bond, life becomes richer,” said Bernard Meunier, Chief Executive of Nestlé Purina Pet Care Europe, Middle East and North Africa. “We want to turn today’s invaluable discussions into action by inviting the public to get involved and join our efforts to contribute to a society that is stronger and healthier when pets are welcomed into it.” The event, held at Dolce La Hulpe in Brussels, brought together leading experts in public and pet health, nutrition and wellbeing from across Europe and Russia, to engage in vital debate around topics such as the benefits of Animal Assisted Activities and Therapy, pets contribution to health and wellness and how best to leverage research opportunities to demonstrate the benefits of pet ownership to public health. Guests had the chance to take part in thought-provoking discussions, hear different perspectives and inspiring stories around the pet-human bond. These discussions were led by expert panellists including UK speakers Professor Daniel Mills, a well-known international authority on companion animal behaviour, cognition and welfare, and Dr Claire Guest, Co-Founder of Medical Detection Dogs, an organisation that trains dogs to identify human disease by odour. Other speakers included Dr Andrea Meisser, a veterinarian and president and board member in communal politics and of professional associations in the field of veterinary medicine and Andrea Gavinelli, veterinarian and policy official at the European Commission. Delegates were also given the opportunity to engage with a series of interactive exhibits, which featured Purina’s expertise in pet nutrition and wellbeing and offered the chance to connect with Purina experts and some of their partners. Three exhibits focused on the benefits of our relationship with pets under the banners of Together for Health, Together for Children and the Young and Together for Life. Also included was a demonstration of how external stimuli can generate joyful emotions in dogs and the use of thermal imaging to better understand what makes a dog experience a positive change in mood. Purina went on to announce its ten Purina in Society Commitments, which are the company’s framework of initiatives with clear measurable goals to help create a world where people and pets can be better together. To shape these commitments, Purina has engaged with stakeholders to understand the material issues impacting pets’ role in society. - Lead the industry in pet nutrition and health research
- Deliver accessible product information and pet care advice
- Remove artificial colours from our products
- Create job opportunities for young people below 30 years at Nestlé Purina in Europe
- Implement responsible sourcing
- Improve the environmental performance of our packaging
- Promote pet adoption through collaboration and partnerships
- Help reduce the risk of pet obesity through collaborative prevention programmes
- Promote pets in the workplace
- Promote responsible pet ownership programmes for children
The one-day Forum was Purina’s first ever public European event bringing people together to share their opinions and draw attention to issues surrounding pets’ place in society. For more information visit https://www.purina.co.uk/pins

Rabbit Awareness Week 2016 dates announced

The organisers of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) are calling on veterinary practices and the pet industry to hop on board its national campaign on June 18th-26th to raise awareness of the importance of rabbit companionship. The ‘Buddies For Bunnies’ theme for this summer’s RAW event – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year – will highlight the fact that rabbits are a social species and usually prefer to live with another friendly rabbit. RAW hopes to encourage owners of single rabbits to find a suitable friend for their pet and would like to see an increase in the number of owners re-homing rabbits from welfare centres. Led by one of the UK’s leading pet food manufacturers, Burgess Pet Care – alongside the RSPCA, Wood Green Animal Shelters, Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund, Panacur Rabbit, Blue Cross and PDSA – last year’s RAW campaign reached an audience of over 1 million rabbit owners and put rabbit welfare firmly on the agenda. Rabbit Awareness Week already supports the rabbit care provided by over 4000 UK vet practices and this year wants to see more rescue centres, pet retailers and schools pledge their support to the 2016 #BuddiesForBunnies campaign. “RAW is a fun, educational week of activities and events with a serious aim, and is the only campaign of its kind,” says Burgess Pet Care brand manager Rehana Kausar. “This year, we’d like to show how rabbits, like us, are social animals and need to live with another friendly rabbit in order to help keep them happy. We’re passionate about highlighting this issue to pet owners and hope that the veterinary and pet industries will give us a helping paw in the process.” For more details go to www.rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk, www.burgesspetcare.com

PATS Sandown has secured a strong line-up of speakers for two days of seminars designed to give pet retailers ahead-of-the-game ideas on new lines, new approaches and new profit potential.
The talks, produced in association with Pedigree Wholesale, will take place in the Seminar Theatre in the Esher Hall of Sandown Park Exhibition Centre on both days of the show – Tuesday and Wednesday, March 22-23, 2016.
The free-to-attend series of seminars will cover topics including: top tips for your independent retail business; driving growth in independents; retailing raw pet food; how to embrace the Digital Revolution; and using social media to build a loyal customer following.
There will also be a chance to earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for those people attending a special seminar on why pet healthcare is important to your business, by animal healthcare specialists Merial. The CPD points will go towards the ongoing development of Suitably Qualified People (SQP) working in the pet industry.
Guy Blaskey, from Pooch and Mutt, has given talks at PATS for the past five years and he says: “At every show the audience seems to be full of people who are really interested in pushing their businesses forward and learning about modern marketing techniques.
“I always get some very interesting questions at the end of the talk and people often follow up with queries via email, twitter or facebook.”
At PATS Sandown, Guy will be giving talk on what customers want from the pet trade.
“One of the easiest ways to discover new ideas that could help boost your business is to attend the free seminars at PATS,” said organiser Annie Foord.
“If there’s a subject that catches your eye then make a mental note of the time or write it down in your diary so you don’t miss it.
“Most seminars last half-an-hour so there’s no time to become bored. In fact, because of the time limit, there’s a lot of information packed into such a short session and often it’s a good idea to take notes or write down bullet points. Usually, the speaker will take questions at the end of the talk.”
As well as this free programme of seminars there will be so much more to see on the 140 exhibitor stands packing two halls at Sandown, including an impressive list of new products. There’s still time for visitors to register for free show at www.patshow.co.uk.

Pet chain donates £6,000 to help launch children’s charity

A new charity, which has been set up to help fund home adaptations for disabled children, has recently launched with the help of a £6,000 donation from ethical pet retailer, Pets Corner with a further pledge from the company to donate £5,000 per year.
Sullivan’s Heroes is the result of months of work by Richard Smith – a long term supplier for Pets Corner - and his wife Fiona. During the process of adapting their own property for their disabled son, Sullivan, they discovered there was little in the way of financial assistance for families and their disabled children who required the necessary adjustments to live comfortably and safely in their homes.
Tragically, after the family raised 90% of the costs through various fundraising initiatives, which inspired them to set up the charity, Sullivan passed away in January 2015 shortly before the work on their home was completed. Since then, it has been his parents’ mission to build brighter futures for other families in their son’s memory through the vital fundraising work of Sullivan’s Heroes.
Commenting on the donation from Pets Corner, Richard Smith said: “It has taken us over 18 months to get through, over and around all the hurdles in order to get Sullivan’s Heroes off the ground.
"We are absolutely delighted that we have now been able to realise this incredibly important resource in our son’s memory for families who, like us, have nowhere to turn. We would like to thank Pets Corner for their generous donation, which will go towards helping families in the future.
“We don’t have the skills to save lives, but we certainly have the ability to change lives and that is what we are setting out to do, just like the many people who have helped us as parents and Sullivan throughout his life.”
Managing Director at Pets Corner Dean Richmond added: “It is particularly poignant that Sullivan was the son of one of our friends, and long term suppliers, Richard. I have worked with Richard for a number of years and I have seen first-hand the effort and determination he and his wife Fiona have put in to the charity not only fundraising to make things better for their own family, but for the lives of others.
“I am delighted that Pets Corner is able to contribute towards the work Sullivan’s Heroes is doing and to help make a difference to families in a similar position across the UK.”
The £6,000 donated by Pets Corner will help provide ongoing financial grants for disabled children and their families.

The UK’s largest and most successful pet slimming competition - which has helped more than 100 overweight animals lose a staggering 63 stone over the past decade - is on the hunt for more contestants.
The deadline for entries is fast approaching for PDSA’s Pet Fit Club, with owners needing to sign up their dumpy dogs, flabby felines and rotund rabbits by this Sunday, 6th March.
With new data showing that a staggering 5.5 million* cats, dogs and rabbits in the UK are being fed treats every day, PDSA vets are warning owners that they could be drastically shortening their pet’s life expectancy.
A combination of owners feeding snacks, scraps, takeaway leftovers and even booze, is fuelling the obesity crisis among our pets, according to the UK’s leading veterinary charity.
To help fight the flab PDSA has launched its annual Pet Fit Club competition and is inviting owners of overweight and obese pets to take part. The competition is a six-month diet and exercise programme, tailored and overseen by expert PDSA vets and nurses. The charity will select up to 12 overweight dogs, cats and rabbits from across the UK to participate.
To enter your pet please visit www.pdsa.org.uk/petfitclub Entry forms are also available from PDSA Pet Hospitals, Shops and Pet Hut superstores nationwide.
Over the past 10 years PDSA Pet Fit Club has helped 74 dogs, 32 cats and 6 rabbits lose a total 63 stone 11lb - equivalent to over 400 bags of sugar, 6,500 tins of tuna, 7,000 sausages or four heavyweight boxers.
“Pet obesity can be tackled, and through a diet and exercise programme like Pet Fit Club we can transform fat pets into fit pets,” said PDSA Vet Vicki Larkham-Jones.
“Since 2005, the competition has helped many pets and encouraged thousands more owners to make positive changes to their pet’s lifestyle. If you’ve got a pet that’s carrying too many pounds why not do something that could change their lives for the better and enter them into Pet Fit Club today.”
Pet Fit Club participants will receive free diet pet food for the duration of the competition, courtesy of Dechra. The overall Pet Fit Club Champ, who will be crowned at the end of 2016, will win a year’s free diet food and a pet friendly holiday courtesy of www.cottages.com.
The total sample size was 5,152 owners of cats, dogs and rabbits aged 18+ who live within the UK. Fieldwork was undertaken between 19 and 26 March 2015. The survey was carried out online via YouGov’s online research panel. The figures have been weighted to be representative of the population by pet species and the owner’s gender, age and geographic region. A link to the survey was also publicised via PDSA’s contact database, website and social media, to achieve a further 26,432 pet owner responses. These figures, however, have not been reported in this press release.
Based on estimated populations of 9.3 million dogs, 11.1 million cats and 1.2 million rabbits:
*36% of dogs, 18% of cats and 14% of rabbits receive treats on a daily basis. (9,300,000 x 36/100 = 3,348,000; 11,100,000 X 18/100 = 1,998,000; 1,200,000 X14/100 = 168,000)

A cat from Gateshead has seen his odds of developing a type of cancer eradicated after an undescended testicle was picked up in the nick of time, thanks to PDSA.
Biggles, a blue-coloured domestic short haired cat, had been taken to the charity’s Gateshead Pet Hospital for a routine check-up when Vet Nurse Lauren Walton noticed something wasn’t quite right.
While examining the two-year-old cat she found that only one of his testicles had descended – which, if left untreated, would put him at a higher risk of developing cancer.
Lauren said: “I was carrying out a routine pet health check and found that only one of his testicles was present. We explained to Biggles’ owner that if we didn’t operate to remove the one that hadn’t descended there was a real risk of it becoming cancerous further down the line.”
The very next day Biggles was taken into theatre where the undescended testicle was removed from his abdomen. He was also castrated and microchipped.
Lauren added: “If we hadn’t picked up on this when we did it could easily have gone unnoticed and the outcome may have been very different.
“PDSA is educating owners about the importance of preventive health care such as neutering, vaccinations and microchipping. Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery we will deliver 30,000 neutering operations to pets this year.”
Janine, Biggles’ owner, is extremely grateful to PDSA for the treatment her cat received.
Janine, from South Shields, said: “I’m so glad that I took him to PDSA for his check-up that day. If I hadn’t he might not be with me now. It just goes to show why it’s so important to visit your vet regularly.”
Biggles has made a full recovery following his surgery and now he is neutered he’s also less likely to roam and fight with other cats, reducing his chances of contracting conditions like FIV – the feline equivalent of the HIV virus.

Pets Corner has been shortlisted in the Marketing Initiative of the Year category at this year’s Third Sector Business Charity Awards.
The awards, which are organised by Third Sector, a monthly magazine focusing on the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors, recognise an array of outstanding contributions from companies, and their respective collaborations with charities across the UK.
Pets Corner’s Give a Dog a Coat campaign, which supported the charity with the same name, aimed to help homeless dogs across the country to keep warm during the colder months. Customers were invited to donate pre-loved, homemade and new dog coats via Pets Corner’s network of over 100 stores during November and December 2015 - for every coat received, Pets Corner donated a tasty doggy treat to the charity.
To date the campaign has collected over 225 dog coats as well as raised awareness for the charity on an international scale with donations coming from places as far flung as New Zealand and the USA.
Commenting on the announcement, Dean Richmond, Managing Director at Pets Corner, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Pets Corner has been shortlisted for the Marketing Initiative of the Year Award for the Give a Dog a Coat campaign.
“As a company we donate more than 4% of our net profit to charities and dedicate a great deal of time to giving back to the communities around us - this includes helping charities both nationally and at a local level.
“The work that Give a Dog a Coat undertakes is extremely worthwhile and we are proud that our collaboration with them has enabled them to grow and develop their services so that more homeless dogs are being reached. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with them in the future.”
The winner of the Marketing Initiative of the Year Award will be unveiled at a gala dinner on Wednesday 20th April at the Hilton London Bankside.

A rabbit from Rowley Regis is the latest recipient of a devotion award from veterinary charity PDSA, for helping his owner through a very tough time in her life.
Three-year-old Roary was nominated by owner Ellie Taylor (18), for supporting her through a family bereavement, issues at school and her battle with anorexia.
Roary has been awarded a PDSA Commendation for his devotion to Ellie, who said: “In 2011 I lost my granddad suddenly. I was also having problems at school and as a result I wasn’t able to cope with things. l became ill with an eating disorder, anorexia, and had to come out of school. I was getting professional help for my illness, but still felt there was something missing in my life.
Ellie’s mum Joanne decided to get two rabbits, Roary and Tiger, in the hope that having responsibility for their care would help her daughter to get better. Sadly Tiger died in 2012.
“Because I couldn’t go to school, I spent every day with Roary and Tiger. They helped ease my pain and slowly I began to feel like myself again. It’s amazing that animals can make you feel like this. Roary in particular has changed my life. He’s my best friend, companion and happiness. Without him I don’t think I’d be the person I am today.”
Ian Fleming, PDSA’s Senior Vet at the charity’s Pet Hospital in Oldbury, the Marion and Christina Ionescu Centre of Surgical Excellence, presented Roary with his certificate at a special presentation on Thursday (25 February 2016).
Ian said: “At PDSA we understand the strength and power of the bond between a pet, be it big or small, and their owner. The PDSA Commendation recognises the outstanding devotion that pets display and celebrates the amazing ways that they enrich our lives. It is clear that Roary has had a massive impact on Ellie’s life and is a worthy recipient of the PDSA Commendation.”
Ellie concludes: “I am so proud of Roary and I am thrilled that this award highlights how small pets can make a big difference to people’s lives. He will get some extra hay and lots of cuddles to celebrate!”

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and BVA Northern Ireland Branch have welcomed the publication of DARD and the Department of Justice’s Final Report of the Review of the Implementation of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 and the report’s 68 recommendations, including tougher sentencing for those convicted of animal cruelty.
The report was launched this morning in Belfast by the Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill and the Justice Minister David Ford.
Welcoming the report, Seamus O’Kane, BVA Northern Ireland Branch President said: “We are very pleased with these recommendations and the way in which DARD and the Department of Justice have worked together so quickly to put these recommendations into practice, accepting the recommendations before the publication of the report to allow necessary legislative changes to be made as early as possible.
"It is good to know that work is already underway as regards tougher sentencing for those who mistreat animals. BVA Northern Ireland Branch would ask judges to consider these new powers for all cases that come before them that involve cruelty to animals, sending out a clear message in every instance about how animals should be valued and treated.
“We also welcome the recommendation that dog breeding establishments will be inspected for how they socialise animals and enhance and enrich their environments, with this requirement due to be written into the regulations at the earliest possible opportunity.
"It was heartening to see one recommendation in action after the launch, with a joint DARD/Department of Justice workshop involving animal charities from across Northern Ireland sharing best practice on rehoming pets. Such sharing of best practice is a recommendation that the many vets who work and volunteer for animal charities across the country were keen to see.
“And all vets in Northern Ireland are behind Minister Ford’s message this morning – ‘Crimes against vulnerable animals are abhorrent and will not be tolerated in our society.’”
Sean Wensley, BVA President, commented: “These are strong recommendations matched by decisive action to make the necessary changes to ensure those who mistreat and abuse animals are punished effectively by the law, while also committing to provide education for young people and the wider public on how to meet the welfare needs of animals.
"The government in Northern Ireland has made a clear statement about how animals should be valued and this is something that is to be warmly welcomed.”

Ancol has launched its new Travel and Exercise Harness – an improved design to its Dog Car Harness.
Made from super strong nylon, the harness features a reflective panel and webbing for night time safety and a larger padded chest offering extra support for the dog.
Its detachable nylon loop has a quick release clip which allows you to fasten around the seat belt and secure your dog to the car seat. A lead can then be easily attached to the harness when you take your dog from the car.
Sales Director, Sarah Lane, explains: “Our previous Car Harness didn’t accurately describe the whole use and purpose of this product. Acting on customer feedback, dog owners wanted a harness that not only safely restrained their dog whilst travelling, but could also be used to exercise their dog when they stop in the car or arrive at their destination. So we designed the multi-functional Travel and Exercise Harness.”
The new Travel and Exercise Harness is available from Spring 2016 and is priced from around £15. For more information or to pre-order, talk to your sales representative.

The finalists will be joining Eukanuba to talk about their incredible stories of why their dogs have truly earned the title of man’s best friend. Additionally, last year’s winners, Amanda and Miracle, will be on stage with their new book which focuses on the emotional journey they have been on together.
Over the past four years, three out of four Crufts winners have been fed Eukanuba’s premium nutrition which uses high quality chicken or lamb as its principle protein source.
As it continues to demonstrate its dedication to fuelling champions to be the best they can be, Eukanuba will welcome GB Paralympic athlete and brand ambassador, Libby Clegg and her guide dog Hatti to the Eukanuba stand on Saturday March 12. Hatti is a truly extraordinary dog, supporting Libby as both a working dog and a beloved pet, giving her the confidence to live an independent and extraordinary life herself as one of our Rio para-athletes. Libby will be available for a signing, photograph opportunity, Q&A and interview.
From Friday to Sunday, Eukanuba is also hosting RAF officers and their dogs to showcase the extraordinary work they do and discuss the importance of keeping these dogs fit and healthy through premium nutrition and appropriate care.
Giuliano Buccino, Head of Marketing at Spectrum Pet Brands (UK & Ireland), comments: “Crufts is an iconic event celebrating every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives, from working dogs to family pets, and this year will be bigger and better than ever as we mark 125 years of Crufts.
“At Eukanuba, we encourage owners to bring out the extraordinary in their dogs by providing them with super premium nutrition and appropriate care, and as such, we’re thrilled to be the Principle Sponsor of Crufts. Crufts is more than a dog show; it celebrates the unique relationship that we have with our pets and educates visitors on responsible pet ownership so you can enjoy a long, happy and healthy life with your beloved dog.”
The impact of Eukanuba along with appropriate care was discovered over a 10 + year observation and the results were unprecedented – nearly 90%* of Labrador Retrievers fed Eukanuba, together with appropriate care, lived beyond the breed’s typical twelve years life expectancy, some of them living 30% longer.
Eukanuba will be present in Hall 3 Stand 48 giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the importance of providing dogs with the right tailored nutrition and appropriate care for their breed, life stage, and life style to enable them to live a long, healthy and more vibrant life.
Breeders and dog owners will have the opportunity to speak with veterinary expert Kellie Ceccarelli about their pets nutritional needs while Nicki Keeler offers top tips on training and Jill Gibson shares her knowledge on large and giant breed dogs.
Training demonstrations focusing on different breeds and their development needs will also be hosted each day at the event to educate visitors on the role of nutrition throughout a dog’s life. Lastly, Pets at Home Groom Room will be present to showcase how grooming is an essential part of caring for pets’ health and well-being and will provide grooming demonstrations and talks.

The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association is calling on all manufacturers to include a simple no release message on all new packaging.
Companies which produce ‘dry goods’, such as fish food, tanks, pumps and other equipment associated with keeping ornamental fish are being asked to include a line encouraging customers not to let any animals or plants get into the wild.
The call came during Invasive Species Week 2016, organised by the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat at the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA).
“We have been in talks with some of the big players in our industry to work towards putting this message on products,” said OATA Chief Executive Keith Davenport.
“Invasive species are a ‘hot topic’ at the moment, particularly as the European Union finalises its list of species of EU-wide concern, which includes aquatic pond plants such as water hyacinth.
“It’s therefore incredibly important our industry shows we’re doing all we can to educate customers about their role in protecting our native countryside. Pond plant sellers, both wholesale and retail, have been supporting the Be Plant Wise campaign for several years, Pets at Home includes information on its sales receipts and Peregrine Livefoods is very good at reminding buyers about their responsibilities. But there’s definitely more that aquatic product manufacturers can do to educate the public.
“So we hope all UK manufacturers will show they care about the UK countryside and include a simple message on their packaging urging customers not to allow pond and aquarium plants and animals into the wild.”
OATA is suggesting manufacturers include this line on all new packaging when it is designed and to update current packaging when it’s feasible: “Be kind to your fish and the environment – never let any animals or plants from your aquarium or pond get into the wild.”
