PATS, the UK’s number one pet trade exhibition, enters its 10th year with two major shows lined up in 2018, starting at Sandown Park in Surrey next Tuesday (March 20) and followed by a second event at Telford in Shropshire in September.
PATS Sandown will be packed with more than 150 companies showcasing an amazing number of new products, and it promises to be a highly successful event for both exhibitors and visitors alike. Meanwhile, plans for PATS Telford, being held on September 23-24, are well advanced and the show aims to be bigger and better than ever this year.
Inspired Pet Nutrition were the first company to book a stand with PATS in 2009 under the Wagg brand and have been exhibiting ever since. Trade Sales Director Ben Anderson summed up the importance of a show like PATS by saying: “At IPN we believe in the concept of a trade show – how else can you fully display your entire range of products to your customers under one roof? As our brands and ranges expand, we will continue to utilise the PATS event to showcase these to our customer base.
“The PATS team are experienced, knowledgeable, approachable and go out of their way to ensure the show is a success each and every year. We’re looking forward to another successful 10 years and thanks to all the team at PATS for their hard work in organising such a well run trade show.”
Award-winning Pedigree Wholesale have also supported the PATS team from the outset. “The show is an excellent platform for showcasing new products and brands, as well as meeting both existing and new customers from the specialist independent pet trade,” said Ann Hodson. “The quality of visitors is excellent and we are always delighted with the high number of worthwhile enquiries we get at each show.”
PATS Sandown opens its doors at 9.30am on Tuesday, March 20, and visitors will be greeted by key brands, household names and 37 exhibitors new to PATS Sandown, with potential bestselling items displayed on their stands as well as in the New Product Showcase.
The New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, is a great opportunity for visiting retailers to see and touch the new products they will be stocking for the coming season.
The Showcase is designed to help buyers to view the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display in Surrey Hall’s Brasserie Bar.
All entries in the Showcase will judged by a panel of retailer judges for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, so the results will be known and highlighted throughout the Surrey and Esher Halls for the rest of the exhibition.
There will also be a full programme of free retailer-focused seminars during both days of the show, covering a wide range of topics. These include: how to drive sales of pet products using expertise, engagement and ethics; all you need to know about licensing in 2018; getting more online visitors to your website; and the strength of independent retail.
There will also be a chance to earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for those people attending a special seminar on flea and tick control and prevention, by Beaphar UK. The CPD points will go towards the ongoing development of Suitably Qualified People (SQP) working in the pet industry.
To help make the visitor experience even more enjoyable and rewarding, both the Surrey and Esher Halls have their own entrances and registration points, with visitors benefitting from free show entry, free parking, a free catalogue and many special offers.
There will also be a wide range of food available from all the various outlets and visitors will receive a free cup of tea or coffee voucher, which will be redeemable all day.

A number of pet product suppliers will be hoping that a buyer can be found for the failing Countrywide Farmers business, which went into administration just over a week ago...
A number of pet product suppliers are counting the cost of the decision to appoint administrators for the failing Countrywide Farmers business, which runs a number of country stores in the UK.
The sale of pet products and pet food was a major sector of the company’s business, and its latest problems are seen as a major headache for the industry with some suppliers being owed money.
Countrywide Farmers went into administration just over a week ago on March 7, and the administrators from KPMG have said it’s their intention to seek a buyer for the business.
They have appointed Hilco Capital to assist in running the Countrywide Farmers stores while they explore and develop available options.
The company, based in Evesham, Worcestershire, announced plans to sell the business in April last year, but a potential sale to Mole Valley Farmers Ltd fell through in October.
On March 1, the company announced it had sold its liquefied petroleum gas division to DCC Flogas, however its retail business sale to Mole Valley could not be approved and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced an investigation.
Countrywide announced it was going into administration as the CMA investigation could last up to six months, and the company said it would be "unable to meet its financial obligations for this extended period of time".
Countrywide Farmers employs more than 700 people and has 48 stores. The administrators have said no "initial redundancies" had been made.

Renowned television presenter, Matt Baker, host of The One Show and Countryfile, will be hosting the prestigious 2018 Ceva Animal Welfare Awards.
With broadcast credits also spanning One Man and His Dog, Animal Rescue Squad, Wild Alaska Live, Big Blue Live and Blue Peter, together with a love of the countryside and animals borne from growing up on his family’s sheep farm in the Durham Dales, Matt was the natural choice for fronting this year’s awards.
He will co-host the awards alongside esteemed head judge, the retired veterinary surgeon, Chris Laurence MBE FRCVS, who puts his name to the Vet of the Year Award.
“The countryside and love of animals are in my blood and I am passionate about improving animal welfare both in the UK and abroad,” comments Matt Baker.
“I applaud the Ceva Animal Welfare Awards for recognising both individuals and organisations who dedicate their lives to enhancing animal welfare and I look forward to personally acknowledging and thanking them for the work they do at the awards.”
Cuneyt Seckin, managing director of Ceva Animal Health, adds: “We are thrilled to have Matt on board to help reward the crème de la crème of animal welfare professionals and organisations. We’re sure that his love of animals, the countryside and farming will make Matt a true asset to the awards.”
The Ceva Animal Welfare Awards take place during a glitzy ceremony held in Birmingham ahead of BSAVA Congress on 4th April 2018.
Sales of Webbox Natural pet food have broken through the £4million barrier just 20 months after its launch, manufacturer Pets Choice has revealed...
Tony Raeburn (above), CEO of Pets Choice, said: “These figures show the increasing popularity of natural food choices in the market."
Sales of Webbox Natural pet food have broken through the £4million barrier just 20 months after its launch, manufacturer Pets Choice has revealed.
The Lancashire-based company has seen more than 1.5 million units scanned through supermarket tills since May 2016, showing the brand has struck a chord with consumers.
The range is made from 100 per cent natural ingredients and is now a mainstay on the shelves at Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.
Pets Choice – which has other popular brands such as Tasty Bone, Meatiful and Spike’s World on its roster – says Webbox Natural enjoyed sales circa £300,000 in January 2018, up 272% on year-earlier figures. The retail sales value of the brand now sits at £4.2million.
Tony Raeburn (above), CEO of Blackburn-based Pets Choice, said: “These figures show the increasing popularity of natural food choices in the market.
“Owners want to ensure their pets receive a balanced diet from the best sources, so that they have all the vitamins and nutrients they need for a healthy and happy life.
“The consumer is becoming more and more aware of where the food on their own plates is coming from. Therefore it makes sense that they should have the same concerns about the food in their pets’ bowls.
“The Webbox Natural range offers a huge variety of options for both dogs and cats.
“The dry and moist food gives owners fantastic choice and the treats are proving very popular as they are created to the same high standards.”
Webbox Natural was launched in 2016 and is also available through delivery firm Ocado.
Catering for dogs and cats, there are more than 30 recipes in the range and something for every taste. Most products include fresh meat and all supply vital vitamins and nutrients.
Some of the most popular items for dogs include the Natural 400g Tray range, the Natural Dog Alu Tray selection and Webbox Natural Dry chicken with brown rice.
Strong performers in the cat range include the Natural Cat Pouches and the Natural Heart-shaped Alu Trays, available in three flavours – salmon in jelly, duck in jelly and chicken in gravy.
The treats range comprises four choices of 60g bars for dogs.
Webbox Natural also launched five new product lines at the end of January. These include the Natural 210g Duo Dinner for dogs, which comes in three flavours featuring both wet tray and kibble. It is hypoallergenic and wheat gluten free.
Another newcomer is the Natural Cat Mousse, which is packaged in an 85g tin. Both are now being stocked by Morrisons.
Three new product lines have also hit the shelves in Tesco. The Natural Senior Cat Pouch, with added probiotic, is targeted at older felines, while the Natural Mega Cat Pouch is presented in packs of 44 x 100g servings.
Tesco is also stocking the 2kg Natural Cat Dry food which comes in two flavour varieties and is made with fresh chicken.
Mr Raeburn added: “The natural pet food market is growing all the time and we feel we are well positioned to take advantage of its popularity.
“We have seen significant growth with the brand since its launch and shoppers are buying into the exciting product range, which includes new innovation.
“Our focus is to ensure the continued growth of Webbox Natural, which will allow us to continue to invest in new products.”

Eukanuba teamed up with composer Iain Jackson to create an original classical score, performed by a 10-piece string orchestra, and assess the impact the music had on a dog's stress and anxiety levels.
Observation shows that the score of classical music, written especially for dogs, has a positive impact on their wellbeing
On average the dogs’ pulse rates were reduced by an impressive 22%, demonstrating that classical music can relax, calm and comfort our canine friends
Composer, Iain Jackson, developed ‘A Dog’s Tale’ in partnership with advanced nutrition brand, Eukanuba, to help owners and dogs to live life well together
It is scientifically proven that classical music can have a relaxing effect on the human body, slowing the pulse rate, lowering blood pressure and decreasing stress levels. But can the same be said for our dogs?
With over 8.5 million dogs living with us in our homes, that’s the question which inspired Eukanuba to team up with composer, Iain Jackson to create an original classical score, performed by a ten-piece string orchestra, and assess the impact the music had on the dogs’ stress and anxiety levels.
Commenting on how he approached developing the score, composer, Iain Jackson said: “There were two key elements in writing this piece of music for the dogs. Firstly, we wanted to create something that would have a calming effect and help to relax dogs. And secondly, we wanted to tell the story of a dog’s life from puppy into junior, adulthood, then as they mature and become a senior dog. We wanted the music to demonstrate the building blocks of each individual life stage, representing a dog’s nature, personality and overall wellbeing, whilst also celebrating the companionship that we share with our dogs. This acted as our blueprint for developing the score, telling a true ‘Dog’s Tale’.”
To demonstrate the impact, the music was played to a focus group of dogs of all life stages, across a variety of breeds, including a three-month-old Lhasa Apso puppy. Introducing the dogs to unusual looking instruments, in an unfamiliar environment, with new people and dogs they hadn’t met before, could have been overwhelming, which is why the results are incredibly surprising and impressive.
Eukanuba’s Veterinary Training Manager, Kellie Ceccarelli, was on hand to monitor the dogs’ reactions and assess their pulse rates, ensuring that they were calm and not stressed. Each of the seven dogs had their pulse rates taken before entering the studio to set a benchmark of their relaxed state and then again after listening to the piece of music. Each dog’s pulse rate lowered, with an average 22% reduction across the group, demonstrating that classical music can in fact have the same calming effect on dogs as it does on humans.
Discussing the results, Kellie said: “I was slightly apprehensive that all of the new experiences we were introducing the dogs to could cause them to be slightly stressed in an environment that we wanted to be calming. But it was the complete opposite. They were calm, relaxed and quickly settled on the beds with many of the dogs falling asleep. And to see an average reduction of 22% in their pulse rates was really quite staggering.
“One of the best parts for me was the effect the music seemed to have on both the owners and the dogs together, it almost seemed to strengthen the relationship between them. This is not something we anticipated, and it was very emotional to experience.
“At Eukanuba, we want to help people to live a long, healthy life with their dogs, and we now know that classical music has a real impact and really could help dogs and owners to live life well together.”
With such positive initial results, ‘A Dog’s Tale’ by Eukanuba is now facing the ultimate test with a debut performance at Crufts. Aiming to create an oasis of classical calm in the middle of the world’s biggest dog show. Iain will lead the ten-piece string orchestra in a bid to gently relax and calm the dogs attending the event from all over the world.

Anco is all set to launch a complete re-brand of the company and its products for the first time in 14 years. The new look will be unveiled at PATS Sandown.
Colin Maidment of Anco told Pet Trade Xtra: “We're trying to get across the provenance of our product and how good the quality of the raw materials and ingredients are.
"We've employed the biggest branding company in Scotland to help us, threebrand. It's been a fantastic exercise. They’re a great bunch of guys and have had a lot of fun doing the photo shoots and coming up with the new 'Dogalogue" instead of a catalogue. It's been stressful but I've really enjoyed it.”
Pet Trade Xtra spoke to Colin at Crufts, who told us that the new packaging comes from German. "It is completely re-recyclable. We've been researching for four years, travelling all over Europe looking for the right packaging. We have been working with the German company for 18 months to get the right feel, the right quality and ecological benefits to it as well. It's been a long process but it all comes to fruition on Tuesday next week.”
Will there be any different POS material?
"Yes, there are brand new display stands, new signage, new leaflets, new counter displays, there's new everything but the same good old quality ingredients inside the packaging.”
Will Anco remain focused on the treat sector?
"We specialise in 100% natural treats – we don't do anything but natural treats. We're not going to get into raw foods, we will leave that to the raw food specialists.”
Is the raw food area helping you?
"Yes, because there has been such a big thing about raw food it has had a knock-on effect. Not everybody's wanting to give them a raw chicken next or a raw ear so the dried one is the next best thing.”
Is there ever any problem with supply?
“There is always an issue with supply. We have used the same supplier for the last 8 years. They know the quality we are expecting in our bags. I'd rather be out of stock than being in poor quality. Some customers get quite annoyed sometimes, but I will not bring in poor quality. If it's not the right product it doesn't come off the truck.
"There is nothing artificial in our products. We make sure we visit our production plants on a three-monthly basis and make sure all the production processes are kept to and we know the provenance of all the raw materials. Nobody else can do that. All our natural treats also go through a pasteurisation process, they are air dried and then pasteurised so there is no bacteria in them at all. Nobody else does that. Hopefully with the new re-branding and the new packaging we can get that message across to the customer that they can trust us that we are using hand selected ingredients, we do make sure there is nothing artificial and I think we have achieved that.”
Would you say that independent retailers, pet shops, and garden centres are the lifeblood of your business?
"Absolutely the backbone to my business. They have supported me for the last 14 years and we will carry on supporting the independent trade absolutely 100% all the way through. They literally are the backbone of Britain. Without them there is no pet industry.”
How does you see the future for high street pet shops?
"They have to start specialising. They will have to follow trends and set their own stall out. They can't follow what the supermarkets are doing and expect to be there in six months or a year’s time. They will have to look into the raw and natural and follow the trends.
"You get a fantastic following from your customer when you can spend time and speak to them about each individual dog’s issues. Then you'll always have that customer and they will follow you.
"I go to some of my pet shops to say hello and 95% of the stuff that is going through the tills is my products because it's all natural and because those pet shops are prepared to stand and speak to the customers. So, whether it is food or treats it is so nice to watch that go through because you know the dog is getting good quality food and treats. That's what it's about, the dog and getting the best quality.”
Nineteen 87, the new brand from Inspired Pet Nutrition, came up with a novel way to encourage dog owners to try their super tasty baked range. They parked a red Routemaster bus inside the halls at Crufts.
Nineteen 87, the new brand from Inspired Pet Nutrition, came up with a novel way to encourage dog owners to try their super tasty baked range. They parked a red Routemaster bus inside the halls at Crufts.
Maria Hills, Brand Manager of Nineteen 87, told Pet Trade Xtra: “We had an event last December – a doggy friendly bus tour of London where we teamed up with Brigit’s Bakery to serve afternoon tea to the owners and our baked range to their pets. There is no afternoon tea at Crufts unfortunately, but we still have the Routemaster Bus and our baked range on offer to entice people over.
"The range, created by Graham Wheeler, is all baked in his bakery at St Asaph, North Wales,” explained Maria.
“It’s called Nineteen 87 because it uses Graham’s 30 years’ experience in manufacturing pet food. He used to work for the bigger brands, but he decided there was something he could do that was more natural, more fresh and that's where Nineteen 87 was born.
“The prepared food goes onto baking trays in a long continuous oven so it slowly bakes the ingredients and there is no need for fat coating afterwards, it just locks in the goodness. It tastes really good. I have actually tried it myself as it has human grade ingredients that are super tasty.
"It’s nice to offer something that is quite nutritious for dogs. It’s different to extrusion, which is perfectly fine, but I guess it’s like a baked potato versus a micro-waved one. The one that's in the oven tastes better and has good texture.
"Nineteen 87 is currently on sale in Pets at Home, Ocado and Petshop.co.uk and we are at PATS next week looking to work with independent retailers for the next phase.”
Nineteen 87 joins Wagg and Harringtons in the IPN range of brands.
With our garden centre retailing hat on we can see great opportunities to add a dimension to garden centre afternoon teas. As Santa Paws worked so well last Christmas, perhaps doggy friendly garden centres could start offering a doggy afternoon tea using this idea and the Nineteen 87 products?
Do let us know if you think this is a good idea. We’d love to come along and feature the first Garden Paws Afternoon Tea event! E-mail trevor.pfeiffer@tgcmc.co.uk

The specialist pet trade has a key role to play in helping owners keep their pets on the straight and narrow in the fight against obesity. That was the message from a Weight Management Congress in Nottingham, organised by Royal Canin...
Over 100 veterinary professional delegates from throughout the UK and Ireland and as far afield as mainland Europe, Canada and Mexico gathered for Royal Canin's first Weight Management Congress in Nottingham.
Although the event itself was aimed at vets and vet nurses, there was also a clear message for the specialist pet trade, says Ben Hurley, Royal Canin retail marketing manager.
“We all know that obesity is already an epidemic for dogs and cats worldwide, and there is a substantial role for the specialist pet trade to play in helping owners keep their pets on the straight and narrow.
“We need to help owners understand that keeping their puppy or kitten at ideal weight right from the start means they will significantly reduce the potential for obesity-related health issues in later life, as well as giving the pet a much better quality of life and an extended life expectancy.
“It is much easier to maintain ideal weight than allow the cat or dog to gain excess weight and then reduce back to a normal level. If you have weighing scales in your store, so much the better – because by offering free weighing you are also increasing footfall and hence the chance to drive extra business.
"Even if you don’t, by encouraging owners to weigh their pets at home or at the vet on a regular basis you will be helping them understand that weight management is an essential part of healthy pet ownership, and also put yourself in a position to advise on dietary changes if necessary.”
The two day Congress was packed with key speakers such as Prof Alex German and Georgia Woods from the University of Liverpool Weight Management Clinic; behaviourist Jon Bowen; veterinary anaesthetist Briony Alderson; Sandra McCune from Mars Pet Care; and Louise Brennan, Shelley Holden and Caroline Burke from Royal Canin’s veterinary Weight Management Team.
Delegates enjoyed a range of interactive workshops and games, designed to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of weight management for cats and dogs and to help them improve owners’ compliance with weight loss programmes for their pets – which is typically one of the biggest elements in the sustained and successful management of weight.
The key messages from the event will be filtered down through an extensive communications campaign starting in the spring and continuing throughout the year.
For more information about the Royal Canin range for cats and dogs, including products which have a role in helping maintain ideal weight, contact your Royal Canin business manager, call 0845 606 9980 or visit www.royalcanin.co.uk.
There were plenty of ideas and inspiration for pet retailers at Crufts this year. There were plenty of ideas and inspiration for pet retailers at Crufts this year. Stands full of baked treats merchandised as if they were for humans, a myriad of raw food suppliers, big increases in the sales of harnesses, delightful doggy bow ties and collars and a few nervous suppliers awaiting news on how new ranges sell through in the coming weeks at PATS and at retail.
Baked pet foods were plentiful and there were some great mouth watering displays on show from the big brands and the smaller direct supplier such as Daisysdogdeli.co.uk
Several stands reported a further uplift in harness sales, including Perfect Fit. Flexi continue to gain good sales at Crufts, although they did feel Sunday was quieter than normal, which may have been due to Mother's Day.
From the myriad of raw pet food suppliers at the the show, Peter Roy from Natures Menu was the most nervous. The sell in to the trade and customer reaction to the freeze dried True Instinct range has been great but they now wait with baited breath to see how the products sell through during their first week on sale.
One of the busiest stands at Crufts on Sunday was the Zoflora stand. A brightly decorated stand with plenty of colourful artificial flowers and Zoflora smells was certainly selling plenty of product. It seems this range of fragrant disinfectants is becoming the hygiene product of choice for pet owners.
The other trend we saw on quite a few stands that we think would work well for pet retailers who are looking for something special are coordinated collars, bandanas and bow ties. Ditsy Pet from Nottingham had a particularly enticing display and they are looking for a few retailers to become stockists. If you are interested contact: aaron@ditsypet.co.uk or visit www.ditsypet.co.uk
On a final note, did any other trade visitors to Crufts see the Butternut Box stand? Here's a London company creating bespoke menus in their kitchens and delivering weekly supplies, frozen, to dog owners. We didn't get a chance to talk with them as there was always a crowd of visitors at the stand, and maybe they have been to Crufts before but if this idea has legs then maybe regional versions may spring up across the country. https://butternutbox.com

Shortly after midnight on Sunday a major fire broke out at the Gardman warehouse in Daventry. There were no casualties but the building and stock was destroyed.
On Tuesday, the emergency services spent a second day attending the scene. The fire is fully contained but investigations are on-going. Emergency service presence has been scaled back and discussions about the demolition of the building were due to take place yesterday (Wednesday).
Northamptonshire Police confirmed that a man arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
In a statement Gardman said: "Whilst the fire has destroyed the Daventry warehouse, our business recovery plan is starting to take shape as we consolidate stock from other locations, receive stock from overseas and continue to source our core business of wild bird care locally.
"We would like to extend our thanks to all those who have offered their help and support whilst we pull this together.

With a PATS debut in the offing, Cotswold RAW felt now was the perfect moment to unveil the latest chapter in their ongoing commitment to embracing a healthier living, raw pet food agenda.
The striking ‘Healthy, Happy Dog’ campaign will seek to reaffirm this rural pet food pioneer’s unwavering commitment to a more ‘trust nature’ mindset; reaffirming the inextricable link between rejecting nutrient sapping heat treatments and being perfectly placed to provide a game-changing array of tasty, nutritionally-dense meal solutions for deserving dogs.
According to brand spokesperson, Martin Pacey: "As a vocal supporter of the UK’s dynamic independent pet food sector, we were keen to provide a new deck of new instore promotional materials that provides yet further impetus for the UK’s thriving BARF movement.
"We see the UK’s independent pet food arena as a hotbed for pet innovation, especially in a world when four-legged and human eating habits are becoming ever closer aligned (hypo-allergenic, raw, organic, gluten-free, nutrient rich….)."
Cotswold RAW acknowledges that whilst supermarkets will always be quick to adapt to great ideas, bringing invaluable influence and economies of scale to the table, it’s the hard-working independent pet food sector, with its specialist staff that backs fresh ‘new thinking’ by providing the space, staff support and countless trial opportunities which enable companies all sizes and means to build and bed down diehard followings.
"Like so many other cutting edge pet food providers, Cotswold RAW owes a sizeable debt of gratitude to the ongoing guile, diligence and infectious enthusiasm of the UK’s dynamic pet food scene for never settling for second best," added Martin

Leading animal nutritionist Jennifer Dean says wet food rapidly develops harmful bacteria when left at room temperature, particularly the dreaded Campylobacter bug that makes humans so unwell...
There’s an estimated 11 million moggies in the UK, with a quarter of all households owning one.
Many will leave wet food out for their feline friend all day, so that the cat can keep coming back it when it feels peckish.
But now leading animal nutritionist Jennifer Dean says wet food rapidly develops harmful bacteria when left at room temperature, particularly the dreaded Campylobacter bug that makes humans so unwell.
And it’s not just cats who could end up with vomiting and diarrhoea, because they can in turn transmit the food poisoning back to YOU - should you accidentally come into contact with its faeces and then not wash your hands.
Jennifer, a feline nutritionist with leading British pet food brand Webbox Natural suspects there are thousands of cat owners accidentally making the basic error, saying: "If you’re leaving wet food down all day, it runs the risk of developing a bacterial infestation.
"Dry food, because it has a lower moisture content, is less likely to proliferate bacteria, particularly at a quick rate.
"But leaving wet food out all day is the equivalent of us leaving a packet of ham out all day and then eating it in the evening.
"And we’re talking about the same types of bacteria that cause food poisoning in humans, such as Campylobacter.
"Cats and dogs have a far higher tolerance than humans, but it could still make the animal unwell and cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
"And remember that bacteria breeds rapidly at room temperature and above - which is worth noting if you’re leaving food out in your conservatory during the summer months….”
Instead, Jennifer says, you should take the wet food bowl away after the cat has finished eating and discard the contents.
While some cats might not display signs of food poisoning immediately, they can still be carriers of the bacteria for some time, putting you and your family at risk.
Other cats, particularly those young or old or with other health issues, suffer watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain, cramping, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting and swollen and tender lymph nodes.
A vet will often recommend antibiotics to treat the infection and that cat should be encouraged to take lots of fluids.
And here Jennifer and Webbox Natural reveal their 11 other ways you could be getting your cat’s diet well and truly WRONG:
FEED YOUR CAT THREE TIMES A DAY:
Jennifer says: “You should be looking to feed your cat little and often to avoid overfeeding. And I’d recommend feeding three times a day. The key thing for owners to remember is to weigh the dry food. Wet food comes in pouches so you don’t have to weigh it. And remember that cats generally tend to portion control themselves, but if they are offered more, they will eat more if they are kept in the house all day.”
FEED SMALL AMOUNTS:
“Cats have small stomachs and very small intestines, so feeding small amounts is a much more natural process for them. It actively aids their digestion process. And in turn it could make them more sprightly and less slovenly, meaning they get more exercise and ward off obesity.”
STOP FEEDING YOUR NEIGHBOUR’S CAT:
“I hear this a lot from customers, who say, ‘Oh, there’s a lovely cat next door who comes to my house - what should I feed it?’ The answer is, of course, absolutely nothing! You don’t know what dietary restrictions or allergies this cat has and you could be making it unwell. I think this is a really common problem that needs addressing. A cat flap which only opens for your cat only - operated via the animal’s microchip - is a good idea if neighbourhood cats are coming in and eating the food you put down for your own pet.”
WHEN IT COMES TO TREATS, GIVE AND TAKE:
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong in giving your cat a treat. It’s a really common way to interact and bond with a new animal and can help a cat feel at ease with children in particular. But if you’re feeding treats, feed a few grams less of their wet or dry food to balance things out.”
DON’T IGNORE HAIRBALLS:
“You might think that hairballs are just part and parcel of owning a cat. But if your cat is vomiting while bringing up hairballs, it could also be a sign of inflammatory bowel disease and you may need to book a visit to the vet. The vet may then recommend switching food in order to bring the problem under control. In terms of common hairballs, there’s some new evidence to suggest a diet rich in cellulose - essentially vegetable fibres - can help to push hair through a cat’s system faster, stopping the hair from clumping together and having to be regurgitated.”
ALLERGIES:
“Allergies in cats are fairly common, particularly things like wheat. But if you’re trying to get your cat on a new healthy diet and it’s not reacting well to the food, don’t assume it has an allergy, as you might simply need to persevere with it. If you introduce a new food too quickly the cat can have a digestive reaction to it. But in some cases if you carry on feeding it, the cat will build up the enzymes needed to digest it and the intolerance can stop.”
DON’T OVERDO THE TUNA:
“You should be feeding a maximum of two tuna meals in any week - either from a packet or a tuna can. Tuna has a high mercury content and, as with humans, you run the risk of blood poisoning and neurological problems. Symptoms your cat might be suffering include over-excitement, irritability, incoordination, convulsions, stiff hind legs, tremors and blindness. Tuna is also quite high in saturated fats, too, which isn’t great for feline obesity.”
RAW FOOD DIET IS A HARD WORK DIET:
“The raw food diet, for both cats and dogs, is really trendy at the moment, and it’s supposed to represent the way a cat would eat if it were in the wild. But getting a raw food diet right takes lots of time and effort. All complete foods for cats are balanced, nutritionally, to make sure the animal gets the vitamins, minerals and macronutrients - like protein and fat - that it needs, in the right ratios. Get it wrong and your cat won’t just end up with vitamin deficiencies, they can get some severe infections from vitamin and mineral toxicities. A build-up of too much vitamin A, for example, can cause liver problems. If your heart is set on a raw diet, you really do need to do your homework.”
DON’T HAVE A ‘SENIOR’ MOMENT:
“The differences between the foods labelled ‘Kitten’ and ‘Senior’ are actually really important. A kitten food will be higher in protein and fat because that’s what a young cat needs to grow. The vitamin and mineral content is higher, too. Give that to an adult cat and it could lead to a build-up of vitamin toxicity, as well as exacerbating obesity problems. Senior food on the other hand has less protein, to help prevent kidney problems, as well as more glucosamine and chondroitin to help support ageing joints.”
IS YOUR CAT REALLY OVERWEIGHT…. OR JUST BIG BONED?
“Some cats really are bigger boned than others. So if a vet tells you your cat is overweight, question it, as you may end up UNDER-feeding your moggy. An average British shorthair cat, for example, will weigh around 7kg where a standard domestic cat weighs around 4kg. But because cat breeds aren’t always as distinct as dogs it leads to stereotyping. Your cat may have been put on a crash diet by the vet for no reason! Rather than just weighing your cat, you also need to adopt a tactic called ‘condition scoring’ alongside the weighing scales. It’s just a case of feeling over the main areas where fat can accumulate - the ribs, hips, back and just in front of their tail at the top of their spine. It’s something you can do really easily when you’re fussing your cat. The Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) also produce a handy ‘Cat Size-O-Meter’ which could come in handy.”

Pets Choice Ltd returned to Crufts with not one but three brands, marking a first for the leading pet food manufacturer.
Popular pet food brand, Webbox Natural, attended Crufts for its second consecutive year and showcased the teaser campaign for their upcoming television commercial, while brands TastyBone and Meatiful made their Crufts debut.
TastyBone, the UK’s leading manufacturer of nylon chews and edible treats was awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in 2017, and their first Crufts show was a huge success.
Camille Ashforth, TastyBone product manager, said of the debut: “Crufts was a great opportunity to speak with consumers and educate them about the TastyBone brand and each of the different ranges. The brand was very well received, and we are already planning how we can make next year bigger and better!”
Also new for Crufts 2018 is hypoallergenic and gluten-free dog food brand Meatiful. After launching at PATS Telford in 2017 and being unleashed to the public at Discover Dogs in October, Meatiful took their single-source protein sausages to the world’s largest dog show where they were a sell-out!
Julie Butcher, head of marketing at Pets Choice Ltd said: “Crufts is always an excellent show for us and a fantastic opportunity to meet consumer and trade customers and this years did not let us down. Both TastyBone and Meatiful were very well received along with Webbox Natural which saw its second year at the show.
“Our teaser campaign for the Webbox Natural range also had its unveiling at the show and everyone loved the creative and fun side of the brand. All in all, it was a standout show for all three brands and we can’t wait to return in 2019.”

Pets As Therapy (PAT) Dog Inca, together with her owner Sheena Scrimgeour, was one of six finalists to appear in the Crufts Good Citizen Ring at Birmingham’s NEC on Friday, where she walked away with the prestigious title.
Inca has been recognised for the joy she brings to people of all ages, many of whom are vulnerable.
Each week, she calls into a school to listen to the children read and also visits an adult mental health hospital, which specialises in care for the elderly. In addition, she is a regular in GP surgeries, prisons, libraries and a dementia cafe, where she is a calm and soothing presence for everyone she meets.
When interviewed by PAT DOG at the Good Citizen Dog Scheme arena, Winner Inca's owner Sheena overcome with emotion said "I'm staggered and very, very proud of Inca. This means a lot, and I just want to say thank you to everyone that voted for us. I can't believe it!"
Inca was awarded HiLife PAT Dog of the Year after receiving the most votes from readers of Yours magazine, who were asked to decide which of the six finalists should take the crown.
Pets As Therapy is an independently funded charity with over 5,000 volunteers. Its registered PAT dogs and other pets provide animal assisted therapy and bring comfort, smiles and friendship to thousands of people every week.
HiLife, a high-quality pet food brand produced by Melton Mowbray-based Town & Country Petfoods, has been sponsoring the award for more than a decade.
Speaking just after the winner was announced, HiLife’s marketing communications manager Emma Stutz said:

“HiLife has been sponsoring this award for a long time now and we can safely say it’s one of the highlights of the year. It’s such a pleasure to hear the stories, and we never fail to be amazed at the dedication all the nominees show.”

Tetra volunteered to have its own food tested in comparison with similar products of reputable competitors to highlight the quality of its nutrition. Find out how it got on...
With so many food options on the market claiming to benefit fish it can be difficult to know which brands to trust. That’s why, Tetra, the experts in fishkeeping, volunteered to have its own food tested in comparison with similar products of reputable competitors to highlight the quality of its nutrition.
Claims you can believe in…
In its very own Quality Assurance lab, Tetra constantly ensures that its food products contain exactly what is shown on the label. But this isn’t the case with all brands, as was demonstrated by analyses performed by an independent laboratory* that tested the amount of protein and fat actually contained in TetraMin, Tetra Goldfish and two other products of reputable European competitor brands. The results revealed that whereas both Tetra products contained the declared values, some of the competitors’ values were considerably different or even far beyond the tolerance limits prescribed by the EU Animal Feed Regulation.
With results you can see…
Alongside these analyses, Tetra also tested TetraMin and Tetra Goldfish against the same competitor food products in its own Biological Quality Assurance laboratory to compare their effects on growth and feed conversion across a 12 week period. The results of these food performance tests were also clear: fish fed with TetraMin or Tetra Goldfish showed healthy and above all consistent growth (see Figures 1 and 2), whilst the weight gains of fish fed with the rival products either stagnated or even decreased in some cases.
In addition, Tetra’s food demonstrated a good feed conversion rate which shows how efficiently food is converted by fish. The lower the quotient, the better the feed conversion rate. This means that fish need to be fed less to get all of the nutrients they need, which in turn helps to improve the water quality. The food performance test clearly demonstrated that TetraMin has a considerably lower feed conversion ratio, whereas the values of some of the rival products deviated by over 100%. TetraMin performed extremely well thanks to its top-quality ingredients that are perfectly tailored to the fishes’ needs as well as its successful combination of prebiotics and BioActive formula which helps fish to make optimum use of nutrients.
Figure 1: For its in-house food performance test, Tetra selected four popular species of tropical fish which are illustrative of a large group of tropical fish (as depicted here, red phantom tetras/ Fig. 1 and platies/ Fig. 2).
Figure 2: Tetra’s in-house test proved that fish fed with the rival products grew on average up to 61% less than those fed with TetraMin. This result highlights the excellent quality of Tetra’s raw ingredients and formulas.
Ashleigh Foster, Aquatics Marketing Manager at Tetra comments, “At Tetra, we’ve been working relentlessly to offer tropical fish the best possible diet for more than 65 years now. Our founder Dr Ulrich Baensch demonstrated true pioneering spirit not only by inventing TetraMin, the first ready-made flake food for tropical fish, but also by making scientifically founded research a top priority for all food developments from the outset. Today, our focus remains on carrying out detailed research into the nutritional requirements of aquarium creatures so that we can continue to create tailored solutions for a complete and balanced diet leading to healthier fish.”
In addition to launching the results of Tetra’s study, the brand has also recently revised its product packaging following extensive market research to provide clearer product names, benefits and imagery, which will be introduced gradually to stores.

B&M has removed a pet treat from its shelves following the death of a dog that fell sick soon after eating a bone from the store.
Pet owner Debbie McQuat used her Facebook page to warn other pet lovers about the bone, stating: “Heartbroken to be putting this post up but if it saves the life of another dog.”
After feeding the bone to her dog Harley it was violently sick. Sadly Harley died and X-rays showed fragments of bone had ripped his bowel apart.
“PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE people do not feed any bones to your dogs,” wrote Debbie, from Stevenston, North Ayrshire, Scotland. “I have just lost a really important part of my life.”
Debbie's post has since been shared over 54,000 times since it went live on March 3.
A B&M spokesman said: “The safety of our customer and their pets is of the upmost importance to us, we’ve taken the precautionary measure of removing the product from sale and will no longer be stocking this item.”

Amesbury Pet Stores in Wiltshire will close its doors next month with owner Sue Osment admitting “the time is right” to stop trading after 39 years.
Sue, who joined the business as a sales assistant 36 years ago, told the Salisbury Journal: “I have met a lot of very nice people and had some very happy and sad times.
“I am sorry to the people of Amesbury that have supported us over the years they have been great, but I feel the time is right. We will all miss having a good laugh and a joke with all of our regular customers.”
Amesbury Pet Stores was opened in 1979 by brothers Chris and Frank Langley.
Sue started working at the pet store when Frank emigrated to Australia, and worked her way up to manager and then company director of the Amesbury store and a scond outlet in Salisbury.
Unfortunately, Chris died in 2010 and the Salisbury store closed two years later.
“It just hasn’t been the same since Chris passed away,” said Sue, who has witnessed a change in people’s shopping habits. “It was more hands-on back then. None of this self-service stuff with people helping themselves.”
Amesbury Pet Stores in Salisbury Road is due to close on April 21.

Lintbells, the Hitchin-based company that makes premium natural supplements for cats, dogs and horses, has been included in the Sunday Times list of the top 100 'Best Small Companies to Work for'.
It’s the first time the company has won the award and it’s one of only two pet care companies to have made the list.
Lintbells came in at number 71 and was rated especially highly for its leadership (ranked 41st on the list), the belief that it was ‘giving something back’ (42nd) and the feeling of belonging and ownership at the company (58th).
The 62 employees said that they strongly identified with the company’s values – with an 83% positive score – the company aims to enrich the relationship between pets and people and use science to support pet health.
An impressive 91% of the Lintbells’ team members said they were proud of the company which is now in its twelfth year.
Also important were Lintbells environmental credentials - there was an 87% approval rating of its care for the environment. The company puts a lot of emphasis on ethical and sustainable sourcing, environmental stewardship and full traceability of all its ingredients.
Veterinary Nurse Ellie Gill was one of the employees that the Sunday Times spoke to in compiling the results and she had already experienced the benefits to pets while in practice. “I love the ethos of the company,” she said, noting that she felt that sustainability and environmental responsibility were hugely important," said Ellie.
It’s a young team, with an average age of just 37 and Chief Executive John Howie says it’s important that everyone feels happy and supported at work. “It’s great to hear that our people live our values and collaborate both inside and outside the company to drive success,” commented John.
“It’s just three short years since we originally trialled our YuMOVE brand with the Royal Veterinary College. At that point there were just twenty of us. It’s very humbling to know that despite this fast growth, we’ve been able to stay true to our values and that our team also shares those values.”
Eighty nine per cent of employees said they felt that leadership at Lintbells was inspirational.
HR Manager Rebecca Davies is now aiming to take Lintbells even further up the list.
She said: ‘’It’s great that the team love working at Lintbells and truly buy into what we’re trying to do for the health of pets. Our next job is to work even harder on staff engagement while we continue our phenomenal track record of growth."
