Leading pet food manufacturer Pets Choice Limited has announced the acquisiton of TastyBone, the UK’s No1 manufacturer of nylon edible and rubber chew toys.
The acquisition took place after founder and managing director, Ken Seymour, made the decision to retire.

Britain’s biggest eco-pet product company Beco Pets has launched a campaign to fight dog obesity and help the UK’s three million overweight dogs get fit, not fat.
The pioneering firm, whose toys are popular with dog owners in 43 countries, notably America, Canada, Italy, Germany and New Zealand, wants British dogs to lead by example and stay slim.
An alarming report by the UK’s leading veterinary charity, the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), warns that one in three of Britain’s nine million dogs are now are overweight or obese. The number of overweight pets will continue to climb.
Central to Beco Pets’ campaign is the popular new flying disc toy in their ‘Fetch’ range, The Beco Flyer, which encourages dogs to take healthy exercise outdoors.

As with humans, the risk of a dog becoming fatter increases throughout its life. The medical effects of a dog being overweight include a reduction in its life expectancy, diabetes, locomotion difficulties, circulatory problems, skin disease, respiratory problems, low immunity and a higher operation risk.
PDSA vets warned owners they could be drastically shortening their pet’s life expectancy. Owners have admitted indulging their pets by giving them cake, chocolate, biscuits, crisps, chips, takeaway and even alcohol. On top of all these unhealthy treats, 2.6 million dogs are fed table scraps or leftovers as their main meals. Most owners believe their pet is a healthy weight.

Butcher’s Pet Care has announced plans to expand its headquarters after securing an £8 million working capital facility from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.
The pet food company, which has a turnover of £93m, will increase its current 260,000sq ft factory in Northampton by 50%.
“This is an enormous market with great opportunities not just in the UK, but across the continent,” said Francis Powell, finance director at Butcher’s Pet Care.
“We’ve seen the business grow consistently over the years and, with this factory expansion, we are on track to continue this growth well into the future.
“Lloyds Bank took the time to really get under the skin of our business, tailoring a financial facility that freed up cash flow for us to embark on our most ambitious development in years.”
The £7m factory expansion will allow production to reach a capacity of over 1,200 cans per minute.
Lloyd Bank’s Commercial Banking’s working capital facility is expected to increase cash flow, with the business investing in additional floor space and machinery. The expansion is predicted to be completed by October this year.
“Almost half of people in the UK share their homes with a pet, so it’s no surprise that the industry is worth close to £3bn,” said Francesco Magli, client manager at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.
“As one of the UK’s leading pet food suppliers, and a key manufacturer with international aspirations, Butcher’s Pet Care is a great business for us to support.
“Having had a 10-year relationship with the company, alongside our specific sector knowledge, we were able to create a bespoke facility that suited Butcher’s exact needs. Butcher’s Pet Care began in the back of Graham Baker’s abattoir in 1987, after customers were looking for tripe to feed their pets. The firm currently employs 300 people.

Greater collaboration between disciplines to promote the One Health approach for people and pets will help public health services in Europe make significant cost savings, experts said at Purina’s ‘Better with Pets’ European Forum in Brussels, Belgium. The One Health approach is a concept that recognises the integrative effort of multiple initiatives working locally, nationally and globally to achieve optimal health for people, animals and the environment. Its methodology seeks to understand the interactions between humans and animals when it comes to health and wellbeing. During a series of panel discussions, experts in the animal and human relationship outlined the huge benefits that pets can have to public health.
Citing a recent study, Professor Daniel Mills, a well-known international authority on companion animal behaviour, cognition and welfare, said that pet ownership can help save the NHS £2.5 billion a year. Animal assisted activities and therapy (AAT), where animals are involved as a way of improving social, emotional and cognative functioning, supporting recovery and rehabilitation, can play an important role in this cost saving also.
Professor Mills noted that pets have been shown to reduce anxiety in those with autism, while also easing the stress levels of parents and carers. Professor Mills said, “While these numbers are not perfect, there is definitely something there that the public health and pet care community needs to pay attention to. The benefits of responsible pet ownership are clear. I’ve seen pets have dramatic effects on autistic children.
"Understanding the subtleties and nuances of how people and pets work together is vitally important for the well-being of both, and has the potential to make a massive difference to public health. But it is crucial that the industry is given an opportunity to analyse this further. Ignoring the evidence is a far greater problem than dismissing the research as being at an early stage.”
Attendees at the event heard an example of AAT in practice at the Sant Joan de Déu-Barcelona hospital in Spain where a functional unit has been in operation for the past six years. Here, sick children receive AAT on the advice of a doctor, both in the emergency room and on an inpatient basis. The hospital reports that the dogs help the children to have a better life and cope more effectively with their illnesses. Purina called on the public health community to recognise the advantages of AAT and to play an active part in supporting this vital element of public health care. The panel – which also included Andrea Meisser, Vice-President of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on the Human-Animal Relationship, Ruud Tombrock, Director for the Europe Region of World Animal Protection, and Andrea Gavinelli, Head of Unit at the European Commission’s Health and food safety Directorate General – noted that while the benefits of the bond between people and pets are widely felt, they are sometimes hard to quantify empirically. Professor Mills noted that it can be challenging for researchers to have papers accepted by journals or funding bodies, making it difficult for policymakers to promote the benefits of pets for public health. The panel agreed that greater partnership between all disciplines – from researchers to veterinarians and policymakers – was crucial to advancing the understanding of the public health benefits of pets and people. Discussing how policymakers could play a part in promoting the One Health approach, Gavanelli called on the pet care community to work together to provide scientific examples and data highlighting economic and social benefits. He also noted that policymakers in Europe had an important part to play by taking a holistic approach to the issue. The discussion was part of Purina’s first ever ‘Better with Pets’ European Forum that brought experts together to share their opinions and draw attention to issues surrounding pets’ role in society.

A total of 140 companies will be showcasing their new products, including an impressive number of suppliers and manufacturers appearing at the Sandown Park venue in Surrey for the first time.
Companies like Kevin Milner Countryside and Eden Holistic Pet Products, plus Petitamis, from Italy, and Schulze Heimtierbedarf, from Germany, have confirmed their attendance.
Kevin Milner Countryside is a firm specialising in outdoor photography, which already supplies a number of pet stores with a range of greetings card containing animal images.
“PATS Sandown was recommended to me by a pet store as the best place for the company to present its products to a wider audience,” admits Kevin Milner. “I’m hoping to sign up more pet shops, garden centres and wholesalers to stock our extensive range of greetings cards.”
For retailers who like to stock ‘made in Britain’ products, the Eden Holistic Pet Foods stand will be worth a visit as all the company’s products are manufactured and packaged in the UK, with British ingredients.
Dirk Schulze, of Schulze Heimtierbedarf, has signed up to exhibit at PATS Sandown because he believes the UK is the biggest market outside the US for dog and cat products.
“I like the layout of PATS because the organisers make it easy for visitors to check out the latest products, and everything is under one roof,” says Dirk.
Rob Harvey Specialist Feeds are returning to PATS after a seven-year absence and are hoping to impress a growing number of pet retailers with their wide range of bird food.

The owners of an Exeter aquatics store claim they are being forced to close down the centre because local authorities have failed to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.
Kerstin and Richard Muggeridge, who have run Richard's Aquatics in Market Street for 19 years, announced the closure of the store through their Facebook account this week.
Mum of three Kerstin blames anti-social behaviour outside the shop for their tumbling profits.
And she believes city centre police officers and the city council "could have done more" to help deter troublemakers away from the area.
Kerstin says police failed to act when she reported that an air rifle had been shot at their windows.
Police allegedly told her it was "the price they pay for being in a rough area."
Another incident saw police respond after one of their windows had been violently head-butted, leaving behind blood and hair in the shattered glass.
However, she says the shop has a "massive" customer base and that it was with great sadness the announcement was made.
Kerstin and Richard, who will continue to run their shops in nearby Wellington and Bridgwater, say the Market Street outlet will permanently shut by the end of April.
Kerstin added: "I just hope our Exeter customers are willing to make the trip to Wellington."

Rooney the dog, from London, who developed a ‘smokers’ cough’ is now almost completely cured – less than 12 months after his owner kicked the habit.
Vets at PDSA’s Bow Pet Hospital warned Kathleen Dove last summer that her smoking was potentially contributing to a persistent cough her beloved Jack Russell terrier cross Rooney (11) was suffering from.
The 68-year-old, who had smoked up to 20 cigarettes a day from the age of 15, immediately quit and says it has made a huge difference to Rooney’s health.
She said: “I always tried not to smoke around him but the vets told me that my habit could still have been affecting him and making his cough worse.
“I took their advice on board and decided to quit straight away. I haven’t looked back since and I’m so glad I did it because the difference in Rooney is amazing. His cough is almost non-existent now and he seems much better.”
Kathleen says she hasn’t noticed much difference to her own health since quitting, and that Rooney was the main reason she quit.
She said: “I’ve had him since he was a puppy and he was named after the footballer Wayne Rooney because he was such a star player and my dog used to love playing with a football.
“As I’ve got older I’ve gradually reduced how many cigarettes I had a day but I didn’t realise that my habit could have been affecting his health.
“I would urge anyone who smokes and has a pet to consider quitting for their sake. At the very least it’s important to go outside to smoke to limit the amount of fumes they have to breathe in.”
Ahead of National No Smoking Day yesterday (Wednesday), PDSA warned pet owners that smoking around their pets could be harming their four-legged friends’ health and cutting short their lives.
Second-hand smoke has long been linked to potentially fatal diseases in humans, including lung cancer and heart disease. However, the vet charity says the impact of passive smoking on pets may be less recognised but is just as serious.
PDSA vet Vicki Larkham-Jones said: “Prolonged exposure to smoking can cause chronic breathing difficulties or cancer in pets as well as people. Thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery we’re spending more time with clients, like Kathleen, who smoke and encouraging them to think about their four-legged friend’s health, as well as their own, before they light up.
“If people feel they can’t stop smoking or don’t wish to, then we would urge them to consider going outside to smoke. Then their pet isn’t forced to breathe in the harmful toxins.”

Agria Pet Insurance is launching its own rabbit insurance policy, complementing existing cat and dog policies.
The new rabbit policy has a number of unique features that will be attractive to vet practices.

In celebration of their 25 year commitment to preparing award-winning Biologically Appropriate foods from fresh regional ingredients, Champion Petfoods has launched the ACANA Heritage range.
ACANA Heritage replaces the ACANA Classics, with product names and colour coded bags unchanged but with more meat, more fresh meat, no grain, potato or starch and the need for only one added zinc supplement. The only name change in the range is Chicken & Burbank Potato which becomes Cobb Chicken & Greens.
ACANA Adult remains unchanged at present.
ACANA Heritage has 60-75% nourishing meat inclusions all from animals passed fit for human consumption. One third of the meat is fresh and bursting with goodness whilst the other two thirds have been dried to provide a strong natural source of protein.
There are now three fresh meats, all sourced local to the kitchens of Champion Petfoods. These include free-run chicken and eggs from prairie farms and wild-caught flounder from Vancouver Island. All recipes are now prepared in whole prey ratios of meat, organs and cartilage to deliver nutrients naturally without the need for supplements.
ACANA Heritage is carbohydrate limited and grain-free. Low-glycaemic Alberta Oats have been replaced with lentils and locally grown field peas. No high-glycaemic carbohydrates such as potato, tapioca or starches are included – ACANA Heritage has a low glycaemic load at less than GL 9.
ACANA Heritage includes 12 fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables including pumpkin and squash (for digestive health) together with British Columbian local grown botanicals.
