Forthglade backer invests £5m in Barking Heads

Piper, the UK’s leading specialist investor in consumer brands, has increased its presence in the natural pet food sector by investing £5m into Pet Food UK, the company behind the Barking Heads, Meowing Heads and AATU brands...

Piper, the UK’s leading specialist investor in consumer brands, has increased its presence in the natural pet food sector by investing £5m into Pet Food UK, the company behind the Barking Heads, Meowing Heads and AATU brands.

Piper’s investment into Pet Food UK is the second into the natural pet food sector, following the 2015 investment into Forthglade, the Devon-based producer of natural wet food for dogs and cats.

Pet Food UK was founded in 2009 by Paul Hunter, Dave O’Regan and Jim Moloney. They met and worked together in the pet food industry at Nutro, and Paul had previously run his own kennels business.

Dissatisfied with the quality of dog and cat food on offer, the trio set out to develop a solution. Barking Heads for dogs and Meowing Heads for cats are predominantly dry premium natural pet food ranges, formulated with the highest quality ingredients sourced from the UK.

With quirky names such as ‘Fat Dog Slim’ and ‘Purr-Nickety’ and highly distinctive packaging, the products have helped simplify buying pet food for consumers in an increasingly complex and crowded market.

In 2015, the company introduced the AATU brand, a super-premium product following the 80/20 rule (80% meat, 20% vegetables) which is the world’s first single protein source dry pet food.

Today the Pet Food UK brands are sold in more than 1,500 stockists in the UK including Pets At Home, Jollyes, Tesco and a large number of independent pet food specialists. With revenue exceeding £10m, the company is set to continue its rapid growth both in the UK and internationally. Sales across Scandinavia, Ireland, Russia and the Czech Republic currently represent nearly 30% of the business. The company employs 20 staff from its office in Hemel Hempstead.

The Pet Food UK deal is the final investment from Piper’s £107m, fifth fund.

As part of the deal, Mark Escolme joins as chairman. Previously at Spillers, SC Johnson and Findus, he was most recently the driving force behind the successful growth of Gü Puddings.

Paul Hunter, managing director of Pet Food UK, said: “We had a number of opportunities for investment, but selected Piper because of their deep knowledge and understanding of the sector and their ability to help us accelerate and manage our growth successfully.

“We’ve already started working with the Piper team and look forward to using their expertise in brand marketing, international sales, ecommerce and development of the team to help us grow.”

Libby Gibson, of Piper, said: ‘”The £250m natural pet food market continues to be an area of high growth as consumers are increasingly and justifiably concerned about what they are feeding their pets.

"Backing the team behind Barking Heads, one of the leading premium natural dry pet food brands, complements our investment in Forthglade which is focused on the premium natural wet food sector.

"Both investments demonstrate our commitment to finding market leading brands in sectors we believe have significant growth potential. The two businesses will continue to be run independently.”

Pet Foods UK investment will help create new jobs

Paul Hunter, the managing director of Pet Foods UK, has revealed to Pet Trade Xtra that the investment by Piper will help the company to grow and create new jobs...

"This investment has come at an extremely important time for us," said Paul. "We are projecting very strong growth over the coming years and Piper's expertise, knowledge and funding will enable us to 'super charge' this growth."

Despite a busy and hectic schedule following the announcement of Piper's investment, Paul still found time to answer our questions about the future for Pet Food UK.

Will it enable you to grow the business faster than in the past?
Absolutely! We are very strong and knowledgeable in our field of expertise, 'Ultra-Premium Pet Nutrition', but we are very aware of our weaknesses.  This was all part of the decision to join the Piper portfolio.  Already there are marked changes that have happened and already these are showing positive results.

Do you think it will lead to job creation?
Yes, this is a major area we are focusing on and have already started interviewing.  We have a recruitment plan in place that will see our staffing levels almost double.  We have not long moved into new premises. These premises have been designed with two things in mind. Firstly, pleasure - we spend most of our waking life at work along with our colleagues and the environment needs to exude happiness and energy. Just come along to the building to see how we work.  Secondly, the property has been designed and is already equipped with all the work stations, phones, etc to accommodate the growth.  We want our staff to be very happy and to look forward to coming into the office!

Is the pet food market becoming a more challenging place?
It is, but the challenges aren't insurmountable by any means. There are more and more brands, whether independent, private brands or ghost brands (retailer own brands), trying to make their way in the market. If you stay true to your beliefs, innovate and keep your ethos and brand standards, there will always be growth and opportunities.

Have you got exciting new products in the pipeline?
We have a lot of fresh ideas and some lovely and exciting products coming through over the next year.  We don't bring new products to market just for PR attention, they need to have a purpose and earn their place on our retail customers' shelves. Customers (owners) see through faddy products and this approach isn't something we believe in. We are painstaking in our methods - it took me three years to find the right wet food recipe and manufacturer!

You must be proud of what you've achieved with the company so far but do you think this investment will lead to even greater things?
The three musketeers they called us, out of the fire the phoenix flew!  What Dave O'Regan, Jim Moloney and I have achieved over the last eight years has been incredible. However, we very often don't see it and have to take time to sit and digest and look and listen to what we have accomplished. But I really and truly feel that was our 'warm up' and, along with Piper, we will take our brands to the places they deserve to be in the UK, Europe and globally. We have a simple core belief in our brands and the company behind them - we are extremely excited about the future.

US pet food brand Freshpet on sale in 300 Tesco stores

US chilled pet food brand Freshpet, one of the fastest growing pet food companies in North America, has reached a deal with Tesco to see its products in 300 of its UK stores...

US chilled pet food brand Freshpet, one of the fastest growing pet food companies in North America, has reached a deal with Tesco to see its products in 300 of its UK stores.

The range of fresh, natural, less-processed pet food will be merchandised in unique Freshpet branded chiller cabinets for the pet aisle.

Freshpet claims its  partnership with Tesco is evidence of a desire by the two companies to transform the way people feed their pets whilst growing the category through innovation.

Freshpet Co-Founder and Europe’s MD Cathal Walsh says: “Freshpet started ten years ago with a single-minded mission to bring the power of real, fresh food to dogs and cats.

"We are proud to have been able to make a difference to the lives of US pet parents and their beloved pets, at the same time as helping American retailers transform the pet category and drive incremental growth via shopper conversion and trade up.

“Our aim is to replicate this in the UK, bringing our passion for fresh, real food to Britain’s pets and their owners.  We’re delighted to be partnering with Tesco who has clearly recognised that Freshpet meets a specific need amongst pet parents who are looking for high quality, fresh chilled food for their furry friends – with none of the nasties of more traditional brands.”

In 2016, Freshpet and Tesco undertook a pilot scheme of the fresh concept in 50 Tesco stores across Britain and Northern Ireland, which resulted in the retailer extending distribution to 300 of its stores nationwide.

Paul Jones, Pet Category Buying Manager at Tesco, comments: “Fresh is a completely new concept in the UK but from our initial trials we know that it’s the right thing for us to offer our customers and their pets at this time, who are increasingly looking for better quality, less processed, natural pet food choices which reflect their families’ changing lifestyles.

“Innovating in fresh demonstrates that Tesco is thinking differently about pets, as well as providing another reason for pet owners to shop more frequently in our stores and online. It allows us to deliver value through convenience for shoppers by offering a ‘one stop shop’ for innovative, quality pet food products. In addition, it’s an opportunity for us to really drive the category forward in a brand new direction for UK retail.”

In Tesco, the range includes meals for both dogs and cats across 12SKUs, including Chunky Chicken with Turkey & Garden Vegetables for dogs, and cat Tender Chicken Bites.

Freshpet believes in the benefits that fresh, wholesome food can provide and has created recipes that help promote a healthier, more active lifestyle for dogs and cats.

All Freshpet foods are:
  • Fresh meat-based with vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables
  • 100% complete and balanced
  • Refrigerated for freshness, just like fresh human foods
  • All natural, with NO preservatives
  • Free of corn, wheat, soy by-products or fillers

New national reptile welfare centre launched
The Pet Charity and Hadlow College have announced the development of a pioneering new centre of welfare excellence for reptiles and amphibians, based at Hadlow College in Kent...

The Pet Charity and Hadlow College have announced the development of a pioneering new centre of welfare excellence for reptiles and amphibians, based at Hadlow College in Kent.

The National Centre for Reptile Welfare (NCRW) will be the first centre of its kind in the UK and will provide refuge and care for reptiles and amphibians with the aim of finding ideal new homes for them.

Reptiles will move into and out of the centre through an established logistics network, meaning that reptiles from anywhere in the UK can be rehomed through the new service.

The NCRW will be developed in partnership with the Pet Industry Federation and the Reptile & Exotic Pet Trade Association.

Tim Wass MBE, chair of The Pet Charity said: "Reptiles are now the fourth largest group of pet animals in the UK after dogs, cats and fish. As with the keeping of any animals, there is always a need for rehoming and rehabilitation.

"The Pet Charity has a wonderful opportunity to pioneer this exciting new project and to be part of a solution which matches up new owners with unwanted reptiles.

"Being based at Hadlow College means that the NCRW will be uniquely placed to provide students from Hadlow College with first-hand experience of reptile husbandry and of being able to work and study in a live rehoming environment.

"The project could not have got off the ground without the support of Hadlow College. Their vision and shared determination to see this ground-breaking project develop is integral to its success, and the trustees of The Pet Charity are grateful for their vital contribution."

Chris Newman, trustee of The Pet Charity and project co-ordinator for the NCRW, continued: "I have for many years felt that a centre which provides a re-homing service for reptiles is long overdue, and I am delighted to be in a position to see such a project come to fruition.

"Whilst rehoming is central to the NCRW’s existence, it will also provide a gold standard for reptile welfare, something which is fundamental to the project, given the centre’s partnership with educating the next generation of animal management graduates."

The NCRW project will be introduced to the public at the Hadlow College lambing weekend on 11-12 March, and thereafter, the centre will be equipped ready for a full launch in the middle of 2017.

Further details will be available on The Pet Charity’s website www.thepetcharity.org.uk/ncrw

The Pet Industry Federation has launched its new public-facing website, which will list PIF members exclusively to the pet-owning public and will launch later in March.

‘Mypetpeople.co.uk’ will signpost pet owners to PIF member dog groomers, dog walkers, pet sitters, boarding business and retailers, and through an intuitive search facility will enable pet owners to locate their nearest PIF member business quickly and easily.

The site is separate to PIF's own website and has its own distinct look and feel.

PIF members will be listed free on ‘mypetpeople’ as part of their membership, and the campaign to raise awareness of the site amongst pet owners began at Crufts today with the distribution of promotional business cards to dog-loving visitors there. This will link with a PR campaign within the pet press to direct owners to trusted PIF pet businesses.

Nigel Baker, PIF CEO said: "One of PIF’s core aims is to raise standards within the pet industry, and we know that PIF member businesses are committed to doing just this. PIF membership is a hallmark of quality within the industry.

"We feel it’s right to showcase our members to the pet-owning public and direct them to use their services with confidence, safe in the knowledge that their pets are in the best hands."

Pet trade distributors, retailers and dog owners in a basket of countries have signed up for Beco Pets' new eco-conscious Food for Dogs, the company has announced, as it takes its 'Fresh Ingredients Showcase' to PATS Sandown..

Ignoring the doom-and-gloom-mongers who forecast a post-Brexit downturn, many European countries are among more than a dozen who have now forged business links with the award-winning firm to promote their new food range.

Last year, Beco became the first British pet trade company to win two Exporter of the Year awards in the space of five weeks. And the company is also looking forward to securing exclusive deals with its loyal UK customers at the show.

Toby Massey, Beco Pets' co-Founder, said: "We are gearing up for our biggest PATS ever following the recent successful launch of Beco Food for Dogs.

"The widespread international interest in our new range is very exciting. It's great to see so many people joining what we call 'The Meat-Meal-Free Revolution'! We hope others will join in."

So far, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Northern Ireland and Eire have joined Beco's dog food 'revolution'.

Clearly catching the eye of overseas buyers, and in tune with current trends, their new food, containing fresh, human-grade ingredients, comes in three new recipes, free-range chicken, sustainably caught and MSC-certified cod and haddock, and wild boar, and is described as "better for your dog and better for the environment."

Beco's Fresh Ingredients Showcase, in the Beco Buyers Lounge, Stand M1, will feature fresh chicken, fish and wild boar on crushed ice, along with a host of their food's other healthy ingredients.

Anyone wishing to pre-book a meeting with Beco during the show can email sales@becopets.com

ProtectaPet installs new fencing at Manchester Dogs Home

Rapidly growing Stoke-on-Trent based company, ProtectaPet, launched its innovative dog fencing solution at Manchester Dogs’ Home this week...

Rapidly growing Stoke-on-Trent based company, ProtectaPet, launched its innovative dog fencing solution at Manchester Dogs’ Home this week.

The fencing, which is the first to be designed exclusively for the purpose of keeping dogs safely contained, is UK made and manufactured to premium specification.

The target market includes dog boarding kennels, dog rescue centres and high intensity specialist dog containment compounds.

ProtectaPet has donated the showcase dog run, which has a retail value of £8,000 including professional installation, to Manchester Dogs’ Home.

Eve Davies, Communications Director, places animal welfare firmly at the heart of the business strategy, saying: "Manchester Dogs’ Home is the ideal location for the inaugural ProtectaPet Pro dog run as they undergo renovations following the criminal fire two years ago.

"Many of the dogs awaiting adoption cannot be walked off the lead and so this new dog run offers the optimum chance of being able to stretch their legs outside of their pen."

Simon Davies BSc, Operations Director and lead product designer, says: "Traditionally, dog runs have been made using chain link fencing primarily designed for tennis courts. I saw a real market need for secure dog fencing designed specifically to keep dogs safe.

"Our innovative steel fencing is galvanised and powder coated black for optimum longevity in British weather and quality aesthetics.

"The system is modular so that it can meet the client’s individual requirements to suit the topography of the land and the purpose of the dog containment.

"Bespoke options include polycarbonate rooves, access corridors, double 'dog-lock' gates and opaque screening for disease prevention.’

Steve Mapley, Manager of Manchester Dogs’ Home, says: "Thanks to ProtectaPet’s top-quality products doing a cracking job on site we’ll be able to keep the dogs in our care well exercised and safe, and enjoying fresh air every day that they’re here.

"The exercise and stimulation of being able to run around outside is what keeps our dogs in good health, in good spirits and re-home-able, so this is essential for us – and literally thousands of dogs are set to benefit from this amazing donation of equipment and time from ProtectaPet.

"A huge thank you to Simon and his team from all of us at Manchester Dogs’ Home."

Vitalin supports Scunthorpe Cat Rescue with food supplies
Vitalin has teamed up with a North Lincolnshire cat rescue centre, to provide it with much needed supplies of Vitalin Super Premium cat food...

Vitalin has teamed up with a North Lincolnshire cat rescue centre, to provide it with much needed supplies of Vitalin Super Premium cat food.

Scunthorpe Cat Rescue is overwhelmed with rescue cats that arrived for a variety of reasons, from abandonment to a change in family circumstances or sadly sometimes illness or death of their owners.

Run by owner, Pat Knight and volunteer worker, Lilly Boult, along with three other volunteers and several helpers, the centre is desperate to find loving homes for the cats currently in their care and welcomes contact from anyone interested in rehoming.

Said Pat: “We are thrilled and delighted that Vitalin is able to support us by providing us with its Super Premium cat food, allowing us to give all our rescue cats the best possible nutrition.”

Scunthorpe Cat Rescue was set up in 1991 and Pat has been involved for about 20 years. She has been based at the centre which is also a boarding cattery, for 18 years. She works tirelessly looking after the cats in her care and has rehomed up to 300 cats per year over the years but recently the situation has become more desperate and the centre is now full to capacity.

Housing around a hundred cats at any time, Pat is hoping they can gradually rehome most of its current feline inhabitants to enable her to start to think about her retirement.

“It seems to be getting harder and harder to rehome cats these days.” said Pat, who has herself adopted 13 of the cats.

“Rather than helping, the internet seems to have made the situation worse as it’s so easy for people to acquire animals these days. We try extremely hard to educate people on the need to neuter, spay and vaccinate their pets but there are still so many indiscriminate breeders out there. Also many of the cats that are abandoned have issues such as illness, disability or behavioural problems that make them even harder to rehome. We do everything possible to find suitable homes for all our cats but this can take time.”

Ex-Army sergeant cleared of murdering pet shop worker
Former army sergeant Stuart Jenkins has been acquitted of the murder of pet shop worker Arthur Brumhill in 1993...
Former army sergeant Stuart Jenkins has been acquitted of the murder of pet shop worker Arthur Brumhill in 1993.

The 41-year-old of Ossett in West Yorkshire, faced a 14-day trial at Northampton Crown Court.

But a jury has returned a not guilty verdict. Arthur Brumhill was brutally beaten to death at Paul Denton Pet and Garden Supplies in Wellingborough Road on January 21, 1993.

Stuart Jenkins was arrested on suspicion of murder in 2015 after it was alleged newly discovered fingerprint evidence on a bag of straw tied him to the scene. He was 17 at the time of the murder.

But defending for the accused, William Harbidge QC said the prosecution case was “flimsy” as the jury could never be sure others were not responsible for Arthur Brumhill’s death.

In his closing speech, the barrister sought to dismiss the fingerprint evidence against Jenkins - suggesting the defendant could have easily placed his hands on the bag when he worked in the pet shop.

But he also pointed to evidence that there was another robbery in the Wellingborough Road area a short distance away from the murder scene that same night.

Witnesses saw two boys running in separate directions in the area at around 10.30pm that night and another suspicious-looking man was seen wearing a high visibility jacket acting "suspiciously". They could all be classed as suspects too, he said.

Furthermore, a man in a yellow tracksuit was seen in the area the next morning throwing away an object roughly 18 inches in length.

Czech Republic opportunity for PetQuip members
Members of the PetQuip association have the opportunity of promoting their products to buyers in the Czech Republic...

Members of the PetQuip association have the opportunity of promoting their products to buyers in the Czech Republic.

It follows a British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) initiative that enabled UK suppliers to showcase pet products at the British Embassy in Prague last year.

As a follow-up to the showcase, British companies now have the opportunity of meeting with Czech Republic distributors or presenting their company’s promotional material.

In conjunction with the US Commercial service in Prague, the BCC is taking part in a presentation to some of the leading distributors in the pet product market.

The BCC is offering PetQuip members the chance to visit the FOR PETS annual consumer fair in April 2017 and to participate directly in meetings with leading Czech distributors.  Alternatively, if British companies are unable to attend the show, they can provide material for the BCC’s presentation that will take place on 7 April.

FOR PETS is an annual fair for the general public. The show covers a large portfolio of pet products ranging from pet food and accessories to pet cosmetics and accessories and attracts over 30,000 visitors each year.  Exhibitors at FOR PETS include some of the leading distributors, brands and retailers of pet products in the Czech Republic.

PetQuip’s director general, Amanda Sizer Barrett commented: “The exploratory visit to Prague in 2016 was just one of the many international market research exercises that we carry out as part of our comprehensive range of services for our member companies.

"As a result of the Czech Republic showcase, we can now offer PetQuip members a significant opportunity to expand their sales to another market that is keen to source British pet products.

"The ownership of dogs, cats, small mammals and reptiles in the Czech Republic is above average per head of population by comparison with other European countries, making it an attractive proposition for British suppliers.

"During 2017, our market research team will also be visiting the Iberzoo+Propet international trade fair in Madrid, and research visits to other countries are currently being planned. Further details are available from the PetQuip team."

Johnson's launches new Carpet Flea Guard Powder PLUS
Johnson’s announces the introduction of an improved carpet flea treatment namely Carpet Flea Guard Powder Plus, in a new 300g puffer container...
Johnson’s announces the introduction of an improved carpet flea treatment namely Carpet Flea Guard Powder Plus, in a new 300g puffer container.

This replaces the previous two sizes of Carpet Flea Guard, which were in 200g and 400g shaker packs and are which now are both discontinued.

New Carpet Flea Guard Powder Plus contains long lasting permethrin insecticide and is approved under H.S.E. regulations for use as directed on surfaces such as carpets, soft furnishings, pet bedding etc.

The powder gives fast and effective control of infestation of fleas and other insects in the home. It should be applied lightly and evenly over surfaces to be treated, left for at least 30 minutes and then removed by vacuum cleaner.  Also kills ants, wasps, wood lice, cockroaches and other insect pests.

It is recognised that treatment of adult fleas on pets is not enough to deal successfully with flea infestation, even with the use of spot-on treatments widely sold by the Veterinary Profession and Pet Stores.

Use of a household treatment is also necessary to deal with 95% of the flea life cycle, which takes place in furnishings etc. where hundreds of flea eggs, larvae and pupae develop rapidly into adult fleas and cause continual re-infestation of pets and homes.

Dog nearly died after wolfing down dummies
PDSA vets have saved a dog after it gobbled up three dummy teats and a glow stick, which caused a near-fatal blockage in her stomach...

PDSA vets have saved a dog after it gobbled up three dummy teats and a glow stick, which caused a near-fatal blockage in her stomach.

Megan Marron (22) took 11-month-old Caverpoo* Rosie to Middlesbrough PDSA Pet Hospital, as she was showing some worrying symptoms: “We didn’t know what was wrong – Rosie was being sick and was very lethargic, which is really unlike her as she’s usually full of energy”, she said.

Once at PDSA, X-rays revealed a potentially fatal blockage in her intestine and several other items in Rosie’s stomach. PDSA Vet Nigel Crane explained: “Dogs often use their mouth to investigate objects, and sometimes swallow things by mistake. Although objects sometimes pass through without harm, some get stuck in the dog’s stomach or intestines, which is extremely dangerous and can be life-threating.”

Poor Rosie was already very weak when she arrived at the hospital and vets were uncertain whether she would survive an emergency operation. But it was her only chance of survival. Vets were shocked when they removed the items and realised what they were – the dummy teats had clearly been inside her for some time.

Megan added: “Rosie was at death’s door when we left her with PDSA, and we were devastated to think we might lose her. When we heard she’d survived the operation and was recovering well, we were over the moon. She really is part of the family, I’m so grateful to PDSA for saving her life – they were amazing.

“I don’t know how she got hold of these things.  The dummies must have been my daughter’s but they’re not usually left lying around. I have absolutely no idea where she got hold of a glow stick though!”

Rosie made a remarkably quick recovery and was soon back to her normal bouncy, mischievous self. Megan now keeps a very close eye on her at home and is extra careful when out on walks.

Vet Nigel added: “PDSA vets have removed very bizarre items from pets over the years, including tent pegs, kitchen knives, radio aerials and plenty of toys.”

“Signs that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t include being sick, drooling excessively or having difficulty breathing. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these things. It’s also a good idea to teach your dog basic commands such as ‘leave’ and ‘drop’ from a young age.”

PDSA is the UK’s leading vet charity and is on a mission to improve pet wellbeing through preventive care, education and emergency treatment. Each year the charity treats around 470,000 pets, providing more than 2.7 million treatments to pets in need. Funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery helps us to provide emergency operations for pets like Rosie. For more information visit www.pdsa.org.uk

Petition launched after Crufts-winning breeder admits killing 9 puppies
A petition is calling for a Crufts-winning breeder from Farnborough in Hampshire, who killed nine Border Collie puppies to be “banned from owning or breeding any pets for life.”
A petition is calling for a Crufts-winning breeder from Farnborough in Hampshire, who killed nine Border Collie puppies to be “banned from owning or breeding any pets for life.”

Margaret Peacock, of Cove Road, was handed a 12-week jail term, suspended for 12 months, at Basingstoke Magistrates last Thursday.

The 64-year-old had admitted two counts of failing to prevent the causing of unnecessary suffering to an animal. The court heard how she stuffed eight puppies into a freezer as she thought they may have genetic mutations. A ninth puppy was found dead at her home after it had been beaten with a tin opener.

A petition has been launched on change.org calling for the Kennel Club to ban Peacock from owning or breeding pets. It has been signed by more than 15,000 people since its launch on Friday.

The petition says: “Peacock tried to justify her actions because she thought the puppies would have genetic mutations because their parents had been sister and brother, despite her veterinary surgeon suggesting they looked absolutely fine so refused to euthanize them.”

The court was told that Peacock had been breeding dogs since she was 17 and had won awards at Crufts.

Pets at Home recalls four types of AVA cat food
Pets At Home has issued a national recall of four types of dry cat food after reports of animals experiencing sudden collapses and spasms...
Pets At Home has issued a national recall of four types of dry cat food after reports of animals experiencing sudden collapses and spasms.

Three cats needed to be seen by vets just weeks after starting to eat the products when they were all hit by "sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness".

The four products being recalled are part of the AVA range which the firm describes as "veterinary approved". They are: AVA Mature Cat Chicken (2kg), AVA Mature Cat Chicken (4kg), AVA Senior Cat Chicken 2kg, and AVA Adult Cat Neutered Indoor (1.5kg).

A statement on the company's website says: "We are sorry to inform you that we are recalling these AVA products from our range of dry cat food. The neurological signs which were progressive until that point improved dramatically within less than 24 hours and the cat returned to normal within three days. Thiamine supplementation was stopped after 2 months and the cat has remained normal since.""An investigation has revealed that, in the four affected products, the level of thiamine (vitamin B1) was much lower than we had specified. Testing confirmed only these four products are affected.

"We are aware of three cats which, sadly, became seriously unwell four to six weeks after switching to one of the affected products and required veterinary care. All three cats exhibited symptoms of sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness which are not the classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency."

The Food Standards Agency states on its website:

"Thiamine deficiency in cats may impact a cat’s health. Three cats have so far been identified which became seriously unwell after switching to one of the affected products and exhibited symptoms ranging from sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness which are not the classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency.

"If you have bought any of the listed products with the specified product codes, please return it to where you bought it for a full refund or call 0800 328 4204.

"If you have concerns that your cat may be showing any of these symptoms after switching to one of the four affected products then you should stop feeding and seek immediate veterinary advice. You can also contact one of Pets At Home customer advisers on 0800 328 4204 for general advice.

"Pets At Home has recalled the above products. A notification has been sent to vets to be aware of the atypical symptoms and potential for thiamine deficiency.  Point of sale notices have been placed in all affected stores and in store and  information  has been made available on the website. A notification has been published on Facebook and there has been direct correspondence with all known customers.  All this information explains to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product."

£40k damage caused to flooded pet store
A pet store in Tring, Hertfordshire, is hoping to open again soon after it was forced to temporarily close due to flooding...

A pet store in Tring, Hertfordshire, is hoping to open again soon after it was forced to temporarily close due to flooding.

A burst water pipe in a flat above Gosford Pets in the High Street left the shop more than seven inches deep in water, after it collapsed the ceiling and fell to the shop below.

Luckily no pets were present in the store in the overnight drenching but it’s particularly unfortunate for owner Lauren Saunders, who only became the owner back in November.

Lauren, who runs the shop with her sister Chloe, told her local newspaper, The Gazette: “We left the store on a Thursday evening and came back at 8.30am the next morning and there were lots of fire engines outside.

“We were about seven inches deep in water, and the firemen couldn’t believe that it hadn’t caught fire because of all the electrics we have in the store.

“We went in and everything was ruined. We’ve had insurance people in and they have written everything off.”

Lauren estimates that there has been up to £40,000 worth of damage due to the flood, but luckily the shop is covered by its insurance.

Now she’s keen to let customers know the store is going nowhere, and will be back in business shortly.

She said: “We have to get a completely new shop. But the builders we’ve spoken to think they can turn it around quite quickly.

“So hopefully we shouldn’t be closed for more than another two or three weeks.

“It’s been a bit of a nightmare having only become the owners in November.

“But everyone in Tring has been so supportive."
