Pet shops urged to raise rabbit welfare standards...and increase turnover as a result

Pet retailers are being invited to hop onboard Rabbit Awareness Week next month and promote top-to-tail rabbit care, help bunnies find buddies  – and tap into the 0.8million pet rabbit owners across the UK.

This year’s Rabbit Awareness Week on June 18-26 is focused on companionship for rabbits via a #BuddiesForBunnies campaign, encouraging the 57 per cent of rabbit owners who own single rabbits (PDSA PAW Report, 2015) to find a suitable friends at rescue centres – and to take advantage of free rabbit health checks at their local vet.

Founded by Burgess Pet Care a decade ago, the campaign is marking its 10th anniversary by offering retailers a free #BuddiesforBunnies pack for the event, with posters, window bunting, stickers and a children’s colouring competition with Burgess Excel prizes.

Participate in RAW and you’ll not only put pet welfare on the agenda – influencing millions of pet owners – but you’ll boost your brand visibility and raise your welfare credentials by joining forces with some of the major names in animal welfare, such as Burgess campaign partners MSD Animal Health (the producers of Panacur Rabbit), RSPCA, PDSA, The Blue Cross, Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) and Wood Green The Animals Charity.

Rehana Kausar, small animal brand manager at Burgess Pet Care, said: “RAW seeks to achieve the highest welfare standards for rabbits – and to garner the support of the pet trade is invaluable in spreading the word about proper rabbit welfare.

"With rabbits being the third most popular choice of pet for UK households, RAW has also helped many retailers increase turnover over the years. So if you’re not already involved please hop on board – the UK's bunnies need you!"
