Pets Choice install defibrillators after heart attack incident
|
Blackburn-based pet food manufacturer Pets Choice has installed a number of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) devices on to several of its sites, after an incident where a staff member went into cardiac arrest while at work.
The incident, which happened earlier this year, involved an agency staff member who was unaware of an underlying heart condition. The member of staff collapsed while working on site and two Pets Choice trained first aiders immediately went to her aid and started resuscitation.
While the member of staff has now made a full recovery, Pets Choice have since installed three AED devices on each of their Blackburn sites to ensure that should an incident happen again, they are fully prepared.
Operations director Peter Birch commented: “The two staff members who helped resuscitate the young woman did a fantastic job and we couldn’t be prouder. She is now fully recovered and receiving treatment for a heart condition that until now she was unaware of. Installing the AED devices ensures that should an incident like this happen again, along with continuing to train our first aiders, we are fully prepared.”
The devices have also been registered with the local ambulance trust so that local residents have access to them should an emergency arise.
Peter continued: “By registering the AED devices with Broughton ambulance trust , 999 operators can quickly identify the nearest location while someone is on the phone in the case of an emergency.
"If a member of the public witnesses or finds someone who has had a cardiac arrest performing CPR and using a defibrillator could help save their life. The AEDs do not require any training, instead you just follow the voice commands making it clear and easy for anyone to use.”
