With just over a week to go before PATS 2024 opens its doors, the final preparations are being made for what will be the biggest show so far in the event’s 15-year history.
The Pet & Aquatics Trade Show takes place over three days for the first time from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday, 1st October and visitors can expect to find more new products than ever from a record number of over 340 exhibitors.
Retailers and buyers will also have the opportunity to take advantage of an impressive number of show offers, and discover trade secrets from leading figures in the grooming world.
“There has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to make sure that PATS delivers the widest range of exhibitors, new products and professional grooming demonstrations,” said show director Gordon Thomas.
“Visitor numbers have been growing rapidly over the years and we’re confident the trend will continue this year. There is so much to see and do – plus more time to do it – and everyone can rest assured they will be given a warm and friendly reception. We can’t wait to greet everyone.”
The addition of the Aquatics Zone – a dedicated area for aquatics, reptile and watergardening exhibitors in Hall 1A – is sure to be a popular destination for specialist retailers and buyers.
The New Starter Zone, supported by PetQuip with media partner PPM, has also been one of the most exciting additions to the show in recent years, with over 32 start-up companies taking advantage of the dedicated area in Hall 3 to launch their product ranges.
Regular exhibitor Hertford Shelving has seen PATS grow and develop over the years and the company’s Steve Lodge admits he’s more excited than ever by the prospect of this year’s show. He said: “PATS promises to be a great event for the pet industry. The move to a three-day show is very welcome as it gives exhibitors and visitors more time to spend with each other. And with the addition of the Aquatics Zone, visitors are getting two shows in one. It’s a win, win for everyone.”
EzyDog is another regular exhibitor at PATS and director Guy Ellis said: “PATS is a fantastic event as it provides us with an ideal opportunity to showcase our range – we get a lot of traction from the show. Visitors are always keen to talk to us and look at our vast range of products.”
And Marie-Louise McKenna, marketing executive at Frozzys, added: “We are eagerly anticipating the PATS 2024 three-day event. This annual gathering provides an exceptional platform for us to showcase our range and introduce exciting new products to the market. We look forward to reconnecting with colleagues and welcoming new customers from near and far.”

So why should buyers from pet stores and garden centres attend this year’s PATS? Here’s what visitors can expect:
- The biggest ever New Product Showcase and Awards, with over 420 entries to date
- Dedicated Aquatics Zone for aquatics, reptile and watergardening specialists
- New Starter Zone for start-ups and new businesses
- Unrivalled show offers and competitions
- Grooming Workshop including insightful demonstrations, competitions and talks
- Unique networking opportunities
- Free entry, free show catalogue, free parking for up to 1,300 cars and a complimentary tea/coffee voucher.
One of the major successes at PATS shows over the years has been the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews. Over 420 new products will be on show in three designated areas, and from all the entries, a panel of independent retailers will decide the winners of the prestigious New Product Awards.
The Grooming Workshop, in association with For All DogKind, will include some of the country’s leading groomers. The demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required to complete traditional grooming techniques successfully as well as showing off a few modern and creative ideas as well.
Leading trade association PetQuip, which has been working with PATS to attract international pet retail chains and distributors to the Autumn showpiece, will be staging its prestigious PetQuip Awards after the second day of the exhibition. Reflecting the dynamism of the UK petcare sector, the annual awards recognise and reward the energy, achievement and innovation realised within the pet trade over the past year.

Pet shop recognised as inspiring start-up business

Leeds pet store Woof The Yorkshire Dog Shop (Woof), which sells a wide range of organic, grain-free and sustainable pet products, is among 14 businesses announced as Start Up Loans’ 2024 Ambassadors.

Leeds pet store Woof The Yorkshire Dog Shop (Woof), which sells a wide range of organic, grain-free and sustainable pet products, is among 14 businesses announced as Start Up Loans’ 2024 Ambassadors.
The business was founded in 2021 by Natalie Press after her son received an autism diagnosis and she set up Woof with his needs in mind. He loved dogs but found typical dog shops overstimulating due to their bright lights. This impacted how she designed the shop, including a spacious lay out and interactive products. As a family-run business, the shop was also set up to provide her son with a career.
To set up the business, Natalie secured a £25k Start Up Loan, supported by the programme’s Business Support Partner, Virgin StartUp. She used the finance to fit out the premises with bespoke furniture and to purchase initial stock.
Woof is unique to other dog stores as it has interactive features such as a doggy pick-and-mix and supports other small business in the region by selling locally sourced products. The business also has a strong community focus and Natalie works with other local business owners to run family fun days to increase footfall to Roundhay.
The annual Start Up Loans Ambassadors programme, now in its ninth year, celebrates inspiring UK business owners who have launched an enterprise using finance from the government-backed scheme. The Ambassadors have been selected as they demonstrate the resilience, creativity, and determination required to make a smaller business successful, and to provide inspiration for entrepreneurs across the UK.
Natalie Press, said: “The Start Up Loan’s programme was the boost I needed to turn my love of dogs into a business that is centred around my son’s needs and caters to the local community. Because of this, I am excited to become a Start Up Loans Ambassador this year so I can inspire other entrepreneurs to take the leap and start their own business.
“Within three years we have become a well-loved business in the community that is helping bring people together through our family fun days and customer-focused approach. We are already looking to open a second store further down the line and the Start Up Loan was a catalyst for this.”
This year, in addition to 12 Ambassadors drawn from each of the UK’s Nations and regions, two more Ambassadors have been selected. These business owners represent two important groups supported by the programme, who may face challenges in accessing finance from elsewhere: one from the ex-Armed Forces community and the other from the Gen Z age group.
The 2024 Ambassadors will be introduced at a dedicated event in central London that marks the start of a year-long programme which will see the new Ambassadors take part in a series of local and national activities, helping inspire and encourage aspiring start-up founders to take the leap into business ownership.
Cat Smith, Senior Network Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber at the British Business Bank, said: “I am delighted to welcome Natalie Press, founder of Woof The Yorkshire Dog Shop as the new Ambassador for Yorkshire and The Humber. Natalie embodies the determination and drive that is required of a business owner in the current climate. I know that she will inspire others to follow their dream of becoming a business owner and I am very much looking forward to working with Natalie and helping to share her story.”
Chloe Fenn, Start Up Lead, Virgin StartUp added: “We love the ethos behind family run business “Woof”. The founder, Natalie, has done an amazing job of bringing the brand to life through social, since using a Start Up Loan to open her first premises in Yorkshire. It has been great to see “Woof” expand to stock a range of products and foodie treats, even hosting exclusive events such as pop-up studio days to capture perfect pictures of your furry friend. It’s a must visit for animal lovers in the Yorkshire Area!”
Small Business Minister Gareth Thomas said: “Access to finance is crucial for SMEs to succeed, and the startup loan scheme is a lightning rod to that success. We know that when small businesses are given the tools to thrive, it leads to growth, more jobs and helps to boost the whole economy.”
Since its inception, the Start Up Loans programme has delivered more than 115,000 loans to business owners across the UK, amounting to more than £1.1bn of financing. Of those loans, 40% of loan recipients have been women and 20% from Black, Asian, and Other Minority Ethnic backgrounds (not including White Minorities).
Through a network of business support partner organisations, the Start Up Loans programme provides:
- access to pre-and-post loan support to help applicants to develop a business plan
- fixed-interest first and second loans of up to £25,000 to help recipients to start or grow their business
- mentoring support to help loan recipients with everything from cash flow to marketing.
As an official Business Support Partner for the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loan programme, Virgin StartUp operates within a network of business support partners, delivering Start Up Loans in the range of £500 to £25,000 across the UK.

BAM! cat toys, which are made by James & Steel at their premises in Gloucestershire, are continuing to open up more export markets for the company.
The innovative range of products was on show at Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai last month on the stand of Chinese distributor Haizi Pet Products, which specialises in distributing high-end imported pet products throughout China.
James & Steel also shared a stand at Superzoo with trade association PetQuip in a bid to launch BAM! into the US. John and Jason James were on the stand with Emma Brazier of Petquip and Gordon Thomas of PATS, and were pleased with the interest shown in the range.
John James told Pet Trade Xtra that he believes their sales to China, interest from the US and their sales throughout Europe, Scandinavia and Asia, shows there is good worldwide potential for pet accessories made in the UK.
“People all over the world still value products made in the UK and there is a premium to that tag, providing the product has something to offer, is of good quality and can be supported by good packaging and efficient service levels – these are things which we offer as normal,” said John.
A distinctive feature of BAM! toys is the fact they are filled with Premium North American catnip.

For more information on the BAM! range go to www.jamesandsteel.com, or visit the James & Steel stand (B70) at PATS.

Marriage’s has expanded its small animal range to cater for the individual nutritional needs of five additional species beyond rabbits and guinea pigs. The new premium quality Nutri Pressed range is presented in eye-catching new packaging, with the option of pellets or mixes and a good choice of pack sizes.
The complete range of 13 products, formulated specifically for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice, mark phase two of the brand’s distinctive new identity, which follows hot on the heels of their indoor and aviary bird relaunch last month.
Marriage’s new small animal range is produced using the advantageous Nutri Pressed method which combines expert nutrition with cool pressing technology, for superior nutrient content and flavour. Cooler processing temperatures help to retain more of the nutrients which may otherwise be lost during higher temperature manufacturing methods.
Each product is unique and has been meticulously formulated based on published scientific research to provide a wholesome, flavoursome and balanced diet that helps support optimum health and well-being. The herbivore diets for pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs are naturally high in fibre to help support digestive health. For pets such as hamsters and rats, who have a different digestive system with less reliance on fibre, Marriage’s has designed specific products to mimic their naturally omnivorous diet.
All the Nutri Pressed diets have added linseed, a natural source of Omega 3 and 6 to help support a healthy skin and coat, while a prebiotic helps to support a healthy digestive tract. There is no added sugar and no artificial colours, to ensure that every diet is as natural as possible.
“Bursting with tasty ingredients, our Nutri Pressed products are an exciting alternative to traditional extruded nuggets” said Sarah Kitson, Head of Marketing at WHM Pet Group (Marriage’s). “What we really love about our Nutri Pressed small animal feeds is how natural they really are. Due to the way that they are manufactured they are not over processed, which results in a whole host of benefits."
The new fresh-looking pack design brings a strong brand identity across the range. Clear product names and key call outs bring the product features and benefits to life on the pack face, for greater clarity of proposition on shelf. Every pack also includes the Marriage’s 6 Step Well-being Plan, providing useful feeding tips and helpful ways to support small animal health and well-being.
New pack sizes have also been introduced across the category to cater for customer purchasing requirements, with weights ranging from 750g all the way up to 10kg.
“At Marriage’s® we know that your customers want the very best for their pets and so do we.” said Sarah Kitson. “With our smart, new packaging on the outside and our new Nutri Pressed formulations on the inside, we are extremely proud to be able to provide optimum nutrition and the dietary preferences for each different species.”

The Lion at Basford in Nottingham has earned the prestigious title of Britain’s Best Dog-Friendly Pub. That’s according to Rover.com, the world’s largest online marketplace for loving pet care and its expert Tavern Testers, who have meticulously inspected over 110 pubs up and down the country.
Leading the pack among pubs nationwide, The Lion at Basford stands out as a canine haven, with every detail designed with dog lovers in mind. From plush dog beds and cushions piled high, to treats and doggy ice cream on demand, and even staff trained in first aid for dogs. The Lion at Basford is setting the gold standard for dog-friendly hospitality in the UK, making it the ulti-mutt destination for pups and their people alike.
The Burnt Stump in Nottingham, West End Bar in Scotland, and The Punch House in Wales were also highly commended for their proactive pup-pleasing efforts. Rover’s Tavern Tester’s in-depth reviews judged pubs on a range of factors including their booking systems, pup accessibility, welcoming atmosphere, staff communication, doggie facilities, pet safety, dog behaviour policies and overall experience.
BEST DOG-FRIENDLY PUB PER REGION
Rover's Dog-Friendly Pub Awards celebrate the establishments that truly go above and beyond in creating a welcoming and homely environment for four-legged friends. The awards come as new research from Rover reveals that dogs aren't just welcome in pubs – they’re becoming an essential part of pub culture. In fact, 43% of Brits believe dogs are integral to the pub experience, with more than half (59%) even saying they’d prefer being around canines than kids when enjoying their local!
Taking it a step further, an impressive 62% of the nation wishes all pubs were ‘dog-friendly’ while others advocate for designated areas for children, allowing dogs to roam freely in other parts of the pub (31%).
With pubs at the centre of Brit's social scenes, it’s no surprise that almost 3 out of 4 (71%) Brits see dogs as great icebreakers. According to Rover, 41% of dog owners even bring their furry companions along on pub dates, and for many, it’s puppy love with more than a quarter (28%) of pub-goers having met their partners through their dogs. For those still searching for their special someone, 53% have used their dog as an excuse to strike up a conversation with a stranger, and 40% have made lifelong friends, all thanks to a canine connection.
Adem Fehmi, Canine Behaviourist at Rover comments: “Our 11 tavern-testing pet owners have been busy surveying pubs across the nation to find the most dog-friendly pubs. Scoring extremely highly on factors such as doggy amenities, hospitality, and dog-friendly policies, we’re delighted that The Lion at Basford has been recognised for their efforts in making their pub a wonderfully welcome place for canine friends to visit.”
Ella Wolfenden, Landlady at The Lion at Basford, comments: “We've always rolled out the red carpet for our canine customers—from doggy ice cream to a first aid kit behind the bar. We're chuffed to have been named the UK’s most dog-friendly pub by Rover, and the award will be sitting proudly behind the bar, not too far from the jar of free dog treats! We’ve created an environment where dogs can socialise, eat, drink, and enjoy the pub just like their owners. We're extremely proud to see how much the dogs love it here, and this award is the perfect recognition of that."

New research suggests that Britain’s pets could be getting a Hollywood makeover this Halloween, as search interest grows for dog costumes inspired by major film characters.
The data, shared by dog harness and accessory specialists TopDog, shows 'Dogpool' from the recent Deadpool & Wolverine release joins a lineup of canine classics experiencing significant search interest growth over the last 12 months when compared to the period prior. The trending costumes include:
- Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas, over 5,000% increase
- Willy Wonka following the release of Wonka in December 2023 - over 5,000% increase
- Appa from Avatar’s The Last Airbender - over 5,000% increase
- Dogpool following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine - 4,850% increase
- Wolverine following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine - 3,500% increase
- Princess Leia from Star Wars - 1,800% increase
The trending costumes come as part of a wider interest in costumes for pets, with the search topic, “Dog costumes” earning an average of 4,000 Google searches in the past month, up 40% from the month before. Interest is expected to increase rapidly in the leadup to Halloween, with search volumes growing to 19,000 last October.
Despite the character’s headline movie role, interestingly Wolverine is outshined by Dogpool in this roster. The animal has proven to be a favourite of the latest Marvel premiere, earning 18,000 Google searches in the past month across the UK as the Yorkshire-based dog reaches one million followers on Instagram.

Jack Chambers Ward, host of the Sequelisers film podcast and heading up marketing and partnerships at TopDog, comments, “These trends speak to a growing interest in pop culture-themed costumes rather than generic costumes such as “pumpkin dog” or “vampire dog” that I have seen in previous years. A lot of these trending costumes also make it easy for the dog owner to pair up with their pet for costume combination.
“I’m not surprised that Dogpool and Appa have seen such a large increase in popularity. Dogpool was a real highlight of the Deadpool & Wolverine trailers and Peggy the Pugese, the dog who played Dogpool, even joined Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on the red carpet at the London premiere. Even with a film chock full of jokes, references and cameos, Dogpool still managed to get big laughs from the audience every time she appeared on screen.”
The release of Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel to Beetlejuice [Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - 6th September 2024], is also likely to have a significant impact on costume trends, considering both the film and director’s cult influence on the spooky season. A recent Google Trends newsletter (27/07/24) reported that Tim Burton searches have doubled since June, with his films from the 2000s being searched more regularly than those from the '90s, 2010s or 2020s.
The data reviewed here shows that another of Burton’s characters, Zero, continues to trend over twenty years on from the film’s premiere. Jack notes, “Zero is, simply put, a classic. Similar to Dogpool, Zero is an iconic big-screen pet and is perfect for Halloween as he ticks both boxes of being spooky and being a dog. The Nightmare Before Christmas passed its 30th anniversary in 2023 and I think part of the surge in popularity is that many of the original fans of the film are now parents themselves. This generation is looking for ways to incorporate their dogs and children in their Halloween festivities.”
Other upcoming releases that may influence costume trends this Halloween include Venom: The Last Dance, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
However, pet owners should consider their dog’s safety and wellbeing before dressing their pets in elaborate outfits. This includes avoiding any small pieces that they could potentially swallow, and ensuring that the costume does not restrict their movement, vision, or breathing. It is also a good idea to let your dog get used to the costume slowly, offering plenty of treats and positive reinforcement.

A new survey reveals that while 73% of UK dog owners believe that “you can teach an old dog new tricks,” confidence in their ability to train their dog varies across the nation. The survey of over 1,000 UK dog owners reveals the most common issues dog owners face and the training methods they are adopting, uncovering a mix of optimism and challenges in the world of dog training.
This new data comes at a time where there has been a rise in dog behavioural issues, particularly since lockdown and as PDSA Animal Wellbeing’s (PAW) 2023 report noted, 60% of veterinary professionals saw a rise in dog behavioural issues between 2021 and 2023.
Most common dog training troubles revealed
Petplan’s survey reveals the most common adult dog behavioural challenges owners face is lead pulling (32%). This is followed by excessive barking (26%) and 24% of dog owners reveal their dogs have a habit of jumping on people. These findings highlight the diverse range of challenges that dog owners encounter, underscoring the importance of effective training techniques to address these behaviours and ensure well-behaved dogs.
UK dog owners share their top training techniques
Despite these behavioural issues, dog owners prove they are proactive when it comes to training their adult dogs, as promisingly, only 5% of dog owners who experience behavioural issues don’t train their dogs. The most common training method by 57% of dog owners is reward-based training, followed by positive reinforcement/verbal praise (52%) and 39%verbally tell their dogs off. Whilst 28% use classical conditioning to train their pets and another 16% use clicker training.
The key challenges holding dog owners back
However, Petplan’s survey revealed significant barriers to effective dog training, with 27% of dog owners citing insufficient time as the primary barrier to effective training. A quarter of dog owners (25%) admitted to being inconsistent with their dog training and 23% noted it’s “too expensive” to train their dog (and wanted expert guidance). This suggests a clear need for greater support and accessible resources, as 19% say training their dog is “too difficult” and 16% say they don’t know how to train their dog.
Confidence gaps across the UK
While the majority of dog owners (83%) express confidence in their training abilities, regional and generational differences are prominent. Edinburgh leads with 94% of owners feeling confident, while Birmingham, Leeds, and Plymouth trail at 77%. Millennials (aged 25-34) emerge as the most confident age group (85%), in contrast to the more hesitant 16-24-year-olds, where only 8% feel fully equipped to train their pets.
UK dog owners reveal the training support they need
Petplan asked the 17% of dog owners who said they weren’t confident in dog training on what support and tools they would like to improve their confidence. Nearly half (47%) wanted expert advice from a dog trainer (this was highest among both men and women) and 33% wanted advice from a dog behaviourist. These results suggest a lot of dog owners don’t want to take on the responsibility of dog training alone. Yet a notable 31% of dog owners want to train their dogs themselves, so as long as they have easy to understand resources - this was significantly high among Liverpool dog owners (71%).
Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
Despite the challenges, there is widespread belief among UK dog owners that older dogs can be trained effectively. The survey indicates that it's never too late to start, with many embracing the idea that with the right techniques and resources, any dog can learn new behaviours.
Training an older dog can come with some challenges, with insufficient time being a key barrier for UK dog owners. However, it's important to be consistent with dog training and to demonstrate patience. To help dog owners with their training troubles, Petplan has created online resources with leading expert advice here.
Petplan’s Dog Behaviourist, Nick Jones, MA, says "The findings from Petplan’s survey confirm what many of us already know: training a dog, regardless of age, is not only possible but can be highly beneficial.
“As our furry friends grow older and our own lifestyles change, it’s crucial to adapt our training methods to ensure our pets remain happy and well-behaved. From addressing common challenges like lead pulling to utilising positive reinforcement techniques, effective training can significantly enhance the bond between owners and their dogs, which helps lead to content owners and happy dogs. Too much change, too quickly, can be stressful for older dogs, so usingage-appropriate training techniques is essential.”
“Petplan is dedicated to supporting dog owners with practical advice and resources to help them navigate these challenges successfully.”

Dorwest Herbs launches new website
Herbal pet care experts at Dorwest Herbs have launched a new website – improving their customer and shopping experience as well as refreshing their design in line with the packaging rebrand earlier this year.

Herbal pet care experts at Dorwest Herbs have launched a new website – improving their customer and shopping experience as well as refreshing their design in line with the packaging rebrand earlier this year.
In recent months, Dorwest have moved both ERP and CMS platforms to ensure better, faster, more efficient and consistently secure customer experience.
Changes have included:
- Faster & easier pay – now using Shop pay and Apple pay, with one page checkout.
- Refreshed design – tying elements from the packaging rebrand, including herbal illustrations and content changes.
- Reinforced data security – eliminating passwords, with secure codes only.
- Improved responsiveness – optimised for mobile & reducing time outs.
- Enhanced shopping experience – with better address accuracy and order tracking.
- Clearer navigation – with better internal linking, condition carousels and icons site-wide.
- Enriched product information – with better naming, descriptions, imagery and videos.
The replatform projects started a few months ago, leading on from the rebrand project that surveyed existing Dorwest customers to gain valuable insight into what matters most to them in the world of supplements. Dorwest received nearly 1000 survey responses from Retail and Trade customers, partners and ambassadors, that they used to update the brand proposition and Dorwest customer profile early this year. This project also influenced changes needed to the online shopping experience, resulting in the new website.
Managing Director Jo Boughton-White said: “The digital projects have been crucial to ensure the best shopping experience possible for our customers – some of which have shopped with us for over 40 years! The new platforms are easier for staff to use, allowing transactions to be quicker – with more satisfied pets at the end of the day!”

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has said the inflation rate holding steady at 2.2% in August provides some stability for the high street - but stresses the Bank of England needs to now reduce interest rates to boost consumer spending.
Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, has reacted to the news that the UK inflation rate for August has remained unchanged from July, sitting just above the Bank of England's target of 2%. This marks a significant improvement from the peak of the cost of living crisis in 2022.
The steady rate for August comes despite a jump in air fares, offset by lower fuel prices and a slowdown in restaurant price increases. However, private rents across the UK increased by 8.4% in the year to August, potentially putting additional pressure on consumers' disposable income.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: "We're pleased to see inflation has remained static, although consumer spending on the high street for non-essential items remains depressed. With inflation not rising, we hope the Bank of England will reduce interest rates to boost consumer confidence.
"Reducing interest rates is crucial to fully restoring consumer confidence and bringing people back to the high streets. We are approaching the golden quarter for retail, and we need to see consumer confidence and spend improve," he added.
The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 5% when it meets on Thursday.
Bira continues to advocate for measures to support high street businesses, particularly as they approach the crucial pre-Christmas trading period.

Raw pet food firm aims for major expansion
A Liverpool-based pet food company specialising in the raw diet, Mersey Raw, has announced plans to expand its operations in the retail sector. This comes on the back of the company’s founder Ben McIntyre becoming a finalist in the prestigious Entrepreneurs Awards.

A Liverpool-based pet food company specialising in the raw diet, Mersey Raw, has announced plans to expand its operations in the retail sector. This comes on the back of the company’s founder Ben McIntyre becoming a finalist in the prestigious Entrepreneurs Awards, organised by The Entrepreneurs Circle.
The Entrepreneurs Awards will be handed out at the annual Convention which will be held at the ICC in Birmingham from 9-10 September and will host 1,200 people who will be given the opportunity to network and listen to a range of business and celebrity speakers. A gala evening will be hosted by Irish comedian Dara O’Briain on the first night when the awards will be handed out.
Ben, who started out in the food industry working in a factory environment and then progressing to be a Lead Engineer for the Port of Liverpool development, Liverpool 2, has used his ambitious drive to create Mersey Raw.
Ben said: “I did not initially set out to start a Raw Dog Food company. I simply created raw minces for my own dogs, (Luna a four-year old German Shepherd and Pluto a five-year old French Bull Dog,) and then family and friends asked me to do the same for them and then from there it really started to grow. A local shop was given samples and immediately placed an order which meant I had to get approval from DEFRA, register with the local council and secure premises to start supplying our products. It took around four months to achieve this. That is how Mersey Raw was born. We now have a portfolio of 90 shops and a direct customer base of over 7,000
“The quality of our products are unrivalled on the market along with the service we provide with next day delivery seven days a week directly To Your Door and the convenience of resealable fridge safe, environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging, we take all the hassle and worry out of feeding your dog a raw diet from quality products to quality service.”
Mersey Raw has now set out ambitious plans to increase its retail side embarking on a re-brand and a trade marketing and PR campaign. “Our ideal stockist is one who wants to push the best products based on quality not just margin. If pushed our products move incredibly well and retain strong customer retention. Our stockist is one who works alongside us, gives us valuable feedback and isn’t afraid to pick up the phone. We will work together to have a mutually beneficial relationship,” added Ben.
With an impressive 300% growth rate from Year 1 to Year 2 and with sales hitting nearly £1 million, Mersey Raw has certainly got off to a flying start. They offer an impressive range of boneless and complete mince recipes as well as natural treats using quality human grade meats such as chicken, pork, lamb, beef, venison, turkey, rabbit, duck, tripe, goose and even goat. Customers can buy single varieties or in bundle packages. They also offer fish as well in their treat range. There is something there for even the fussiest dog or sensitive of tummies.
Ben said: “Our goals for the future are to expand our network and our database. We plan to feed as many dogs as possible a raw diet not just a basic diet but a quality nutritional advanced diet removing all harmful and unnecessary ingredients from their food. We will build a community of passionate dog owners leading the way in the world of nutrition.”

Design agency STORMBRANDS has continued its creative partnership with Pets at Home with the launch of Noble – the pet retail group's new premium yet affordable accessories brand.
The brand, design and communications agency worked on the naming, creative expression and launch of Noble, helping announce the trusted retailer’s new lifestyle-inspired range. STORMBRANDS’ brand comms idea “An Instinct for Style” introduces the UK to a series of characterful pets, with a campaign that captures their envious reactions when encountering Noble accessories for the first time.
The premium accessories space presents a huge opportunity for Pets at Home. The number of younger pet owners has not only increased, this new breed of shopper is also spending more on the kinds of pet products that reflect their own values and style. Over the last few years, many new pet accessories brands have entered the market: both smaller challenger brands and high-street fashion brands launching pet lines. With a lot of them positioning themselves as high-end pet fashion, there was an opportunity to highlight Pets at Home’s qualities as a trusted retailer for products that work and deliver the best experience for pets at an accessible price.
STORMBRANDS started by delving into the patterns and insights that might drive purchase behaviour, finding that today’s consumers share a life with pets like never before. From there, they decided that the campaign’s pet-to-parent relationship and product-to-habitat aesthetic needed to feel seamless. Collars, leads, harnesses and beds express a sense of style and luxury that reflects the owner’s taste and their feelings towards their furry family members.
Affordable style, contemporary swagger
Choosing the name Noble, STORMBRANDS created an aspirational brand that delivers associations of heritage with a waggle of contemporary swagger. Everything about the brand world – from identity to packaging, to comms launch – was designed to live up to the promise the Noble name was making. The brand idea also talks to a price savvy audience who want pet products that turn heads without breaking the bank.
STORMBRANDS crafted a brand architecture for Noble that covered a number of accessories categories: bedding, walking, fashion, feeding and travel. Linking all those together is the brand wordmark which takes it cues from the fashion world, with special attention to the kerning and flicks and kicks of the ascenders and descenders to give it an elevated feeling. And, where space allows, always locked up with ‘Crafted by Pets’, as a link back to the expertise and knowledge the Pets at Home masterbrand offers.
The agency leveraged the ‘O’ within the brand name to use as an icon, echoing a pendant or tag on a collar. On smaller formats it’s used as a monogram synonymous with the brand ID. It can be embossed or embroidered onto the accessories themselves or used as a pattern in the packaging and product wrapping. The labels, hangers and packaging are given a sensorial luxurious feel with thick textured stock and multiple leaves providing a sense of discovery. The premium aesthetic is further supported through tone of voice, informative technical illustrations, beautifully shot photography and gold foil detail.
The doggy double-take
STORMBRANDS brought “An Instinct for Style” to life as a comms platform in a distinctive and ownable way by capturing moments when passing pets give an envious glance or longing stare towards Noble’s unmistakable style. It’s a double-take that sets some pets, and this campaign, apart. While the images hero pet interactions, they also feature hints of pet parents to convey the closeness of the relationship shared, extending to the way they dress and live.
With this project, STORMBRANDS delivered a differentiated and elevated brand identity, with a strong and easy to implement label design that considers future categories. The brand shifts pet accessories from a functional choice to a more aspirational and emotive purchase. Noble gives reason to current and new pet-parents to step into a premium world that reflects their own values and style. It also elevates the Pets at Home masterbrand, helping people see it as a destination for style and lifestyle as well as expertise.
Seamless style for younger pet parents
“Working so collaboratively with STORMBRANDS on this has set us up for future growth with a brand that is elevated and aspirationa,l yet has bags of character,” said Kristina Potts, Pets at Home Senior Brand Manager. “The creative is pitched perfectly to appeal to the next wave of younger consumers looking for pet accessories that match their values and style, as well as our core audience. The comms platform provides us with the tools to easily promote our growing range and continue to build equity and recognition in the Noble brand.”
Jessica Carter, STORMBRANDS Account Director said: “Starting with a blank canvas is always an exciting challenge, particularly for a stylish new pet brand with such mainstream potential. Pets at Home is known for expertise, trust and experience, but with this launch we tapped into the emotive feeling of the new Noble brand, as well as the products themselves. Also, because we created the brand and the comms that sprang from it, we could see what’s coming down the line, so we could plan for it and make sure that every element is consistent.”

Pet Remedy rebalanced – same effect but smells better
After taking on board long-standing feedback from pet owners and professionals alike, Pet Remedy has refined its blend of essential oils to deliver the same effective calming properties with a more pleasant smell...

Pet Remedy, the trusted name in pet calming solutions, has announced an important enhancement to its well-established formula. After taking on board long-standing feedback from pet owners and professionals alike, Pet Remedy has refined its blend of essential oils to deliver the same effective calming properties with a more pleasant smell.
Pet Remedy has long been the go-to solution for managing stress and supporting the emotional well-being of pets, from dogs and cats to birds and reptiles. While its efficacy has never been in doubt, the unusual aroma has often been a topic of discussion amongst users and within the pet professional community. Following two years of careful research and development, Pet Remedy has successfully improved the smell of the formula while preserving the powerful calming effects that have made it a favourite among pet owners, veterinary and pet professionals.
A Refined Blend of Essential Oils
At the heart of Pet Remedy’s success is its unique and patented blend of essential oils, each selected for their specific calming properties:
- Valerian: Valerian is known for its potent calming effects, working to modulate GABA receptors in the brain, thus reducing stress and anxiety in pets.
- Vetiver: Often referred to as the “oil of tranquillity,” vetiver helps to soothe the nerves, supporting emotional stability and calmness.
- Basil: Basil oil contributes to easing nervousness and tension, enhancing the overall calming effect of the formula.
- Clary Sage: Clary sage promotes emotional well-being, adding balance and depth to the blend.
By carefully rebalancing the proportions of these oils, Pet Remedy has created a more floral and pleasant aroma, without compromising the efficacy that pet owners and professionals have come to rely on.
Martyn Barklett-Judge, Managing Director of Pet Remedy, commented: “For years, Pet Remedy has been the trusted choice for calming pets all over the world, and we’ve always taken our customers’ feedback seriously. The message was clear – the formula works brilliantly, but some people weren’t keen on the smell. We’ve addressed that by working closely with Dr. Robert Falconer-Taylor to enhance the aroma whilst ensuring the same powerful results. The new smell is more pleasing for people, and the calming effect on pets is just as strong as ever.”
Scientific Integrity and Continued Excellence
Dr. Robert Falconer-Taylor, a leading expert in veterinary neurology and animal behaviour, played a key role in the decision to refine the formula. He explains: “The rebalanced blend contains the same active ingredients and continues to act through both direct and indirect pathways in the brain, influencing neurotransmitters like GABA, dopamine, and serotonin. This ensures Pet Remedy remains just as effective in reducing stress and supporting emotional wellbeing in pets, with the added benefit of a more pleasant smell.”
The rebalanced formula is now being introduced to the market, and customers may have already noticed the improved smell. This development is a testament to Pet Remedy’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to meeting the needs of both pets and their owners.
