Group55, whose brands include animology, has announced plans to move to an eight-acre site in Chorley and the creation of 50 new jobs to the region.

The local business, founded 25 years ago, has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years and following a period of significant growth is relocating to expand further their services and manufacturing capacity.

Currently operating across three sites in Buckshaw Village and Leyland, this strategic move will bring all business functions together under one roof. The former Halewood Distillery at Ackhurst Park, Chorley, will undergo a £2 million refurbishment to create one of the largest and most technically advanced manufacturing sites of its kind in the UK.

Group55 is a leading strategic manufacturing brand partner in the personal care, pet care, and home care sectors, working with brand owners, retailers, and celebrity entrepreneurs. Part of the expansion plans include the installation of a state-of-the-art innovation laboratory from which the very latest beauty and household cleaning products will be developed.

Group55’s commitment to sustainability and providing a world class work environment for their employees is at the core of the refurbishment plans.

Preston-born Stephen Turner (right), founder and Chairman of Group55, commented: “This move marks a transformative milestone for Group55. We are a proud, long-standing, Lancastrian business working with some of the biggest brands and celebrities in the UK and it is exciting to be able to invest further in Chorley to make a positive impact to our customers, employees and our local community."

He continues, "Group55 is a key player in our market sector, employing more than 100 people from the local area. South Ribble has a remarkable wealth of talented, skilled, and hardworking people and our success is due to our amazing team. I am looking forward to seeing more people join us and enjoy the benefits of working with an exciting and growing company.”

Work on the refurbishment has already begun, with a phased relocation to the new site planned throughout 2025.

Dog food firm Different Dog raises £10m investment

Different Dog, a  premium fresh dog food subscription service, has announced that it has raised £10m, from new and existing investors, to accelerate its mission to change dogs’ lives with real food.

Different Dog, a  premium fresh dog food subscription service, has announced that it has raised £10m, from new and existing investors, to accelerate its mission to change dogs’ lives with real food.

With pet ownership on the rise, 3.2 million UK households welcomed a new pet during the pandemic, increasing the total number of dogs to 13 million. Different Dog is now expanding its operations to meet the growing demand from owners prioritising premium nutrition and wellbeing.

The funding will enable the company to move to a new state-of-the-art facility in Telford, the ‘dog capital of the UK’, expanding its capacity to serve thousands more dogs with its hand-cooked, human-grade meals. The company is also investing in marketing to grow its customer base and hiring top talent to accelerate growth.

Founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife duo Charlie & Alex Thurstan, Different Dog was born out of frustration with the mass-produced, highly processed nature of pet food. Determined to prove that fresh, nutritious meals are the key to canine health and happiness, the couple started by cooking meals for their own dog, Crumble. Since then, the company has grown exponentially, now feeding over 18,000 dogs and employing over 100 people.

Different Dog offers a personalised subscription service designed to make feeding fresh, nutritious meals easy for dog owners. Customers start by providing details about their dog, including age, breed, activity level and dietary needs. Based on this, Different Dog creates a tailored meal plan using fresh, hand-cooked, human-grade ingredients.

This latest investment follows five consecutive years of revenue doubling year-on-year, fueled by a passionate, loyal and growing customer base. The company has also earned a 4.8 Trustpilot rating and a 96% score on leading dog food directory allaboutdogfood.com.

Alex Thurstan, co-founder of Different Dog, said: “More and more owners are seeking healthier options for their dogs, and seeing clear benefits from feeding hand-cooked fresh food. We’re delighted that this investment will help us take things to the next level and change even more dogs’ lives.”

James Connelly, founder of Charlie Oscar Group, a major shareholder and Board Director for Different Dog: "Different Dog is leading the way in pet nutrition, offering a fresh high-quality alternative to traditional pet food. With the growing demand for higher quality, more nutritious options for pets, we’re excited to support the team as they scale their operations and bring their innovative approach to even more dog owners.”

Multiple brands on show at PATS 2025

Donald Cooke won two New Product Awards at PATS 2024 and can’t wait to return with popular brands K9 Chew Co, Tick Twister and No More Plaque.

Major companies are taking advantage of the opportunity to increase their stand space at PATS 2025 following the decision to move the exhibition to the NEC Birmingham, and as a result they will be showcasing multiple brands during the show in September.

The Pet & Aquatics Trade Show will take place over three days from Sunday, 28th September to Tuesday, 30th September 2025, and more than 300 companies and brands have already confirmed their stands.

With the final exhibitor number expected to be well past the 400-mark, pet retailers and buyers are being encouraged to sign up for free registration on the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk now.

The Nutriment Company is one the fastest growing companies in Europe, having already acquired four new businesses in 2025, and it will be using PATS to introduce customers to its impressive portfolio. Ryan Winwright, Head of UK Marketing Operations, said: “We’re looking forward to exhibiting our full range of brands at this year’s show. With products designed for all pets, customers, and feeding styles, we’re excited to showcase what we have to offer – from raw meals to other feeding formats, natural treats and supplements. Head to The Nutriment Company stand to experience Nutriment, Natural Instinct, DIBO, The Dog’s Butcher, Nova Dog Chews, Pet Treats Wholesale and Aniforte.”

Pedigree Wholesale will be presenting its extensive range of wholesale offerings, including standout products from its own brand and exclusive lines – Natures Deli, Doodle’s Deli, Chuckit!, JW, Cooper & Co, Earth Animal, TropiClean and Nobblys. Head of Marketing Esther Key declared: “We're thrilled to be exhibiting at this year's three-day PATS show – the first time at the NEC. This event is a fantastic opportunity for us to reconnect with our valued customers and partners while showcasing the very best of Pedigree Wholesale. With the show’s new location making it more accessible than ever, we’re looking forward to welcoming more visitors, connecting with suppliers and discovering the latest innovations in the pet industry.”

Regular PATS exhibitor Canagan Group will be showcasing its premium pet food brands, including Canagan, Symply, and Yora. Joint managing director Charlie Williams announced: “We’re especially excited to introduce the brand-new Canagan Petite Range, designed specifically for smaller breeds. As always, our brands are proudly available only for the independent pet trade, and PATS is the perfect opportunity to connect with retailers who share our passion for quality and innovation. We can’t wait to see our customers old and new.”

Winner of two New Product Awards at PATS 2024, Donald Cooke can’t wait to return to this year’s exhibition with popular brands like K9 Chew Co, Tick Twister and No More Plaque plus a new Suteki Pond range. Simon Lewis-Dale, head of business development, commented: “PATS 2024 was the best UK trade show I have attended in 20 years – it had a great buzz about it. Moving to the NEC will no doubt increase the number of visitors and looking at the exhibitor list, it’s going to be packed with lots of current and new suppliers as well. Having the Aquatics Zone plus Beta International on at the same time make this event a must for the trade.”

Fold Hill Foods is another company planning to exhibit multiple brands at PATS 2024. “We will be showcasing Ruffingtons, Laughing Dog Food, Pointer, and the newly acquired Brambles as well as our co-manufacturing and white label services,” said senior marketing executive Cassandra Brennan. “We will have a full team on-hand to discuss all of our offerings, and with a new venue and a bigger stand we are looking forward to a busy show.”

New products from Bamboodles, Sir Woofchester’s, Wonderful World of Treats and CleanyTeeth will be unveiled on the Pet Trade Innovations stand, with director Steve Driver saying: “We are super excited about the PATS show this year. We are in the process of working with a top London agency to re-brand the Bamboodles range and we will be launching this new look at the show along with several new Bamboodles products. On top of this we have new treats from Sir Woofchester's and Wonderful World of Treats plus a new version of the CleanyTeeth toothbush which is even more powerful and easier to use.”

Chanelle Pharma, a manufacturer of veterinary and human medicines based in Ireland, will be exhibiting its popular brands Prazitel, Ridaworm, Imidaflea, and Fipnil Plus at PATS. Marketing executive Julie Feeney said: “We are looking forward to the three-day exhibition at the NEC where we’ll be showcasing both our Chanelle Pharma branded products and own-brand capabilities. The show allows us to both connect with current customers and meet new ones.”

The Aquatics Zone, a dedicated area for aquatics, watergardening and reptile exhibitors, is returning to PATS after a successful launch in 2024, and it will also host major companies exhibiting multiple brands.

ALF will be showcasing popular brands like Velda, Seachem, Sicce, Vitalis, Aquael, Hugo Kamishi, JBL, Ocean Nutrition and EHEIM. “We will have representatives from around the world giving demonstrations and answering any questions on all our ranges. We are looking forward to an exciting PATS 2025,” said sales director Ian Blinco.

Norwood Aquarium will be appearing in the Zone for the first time and can’t wait to take advantage of exhibiting. Sales manager Sam Street said: “We’ll be showcasing many exciting innovations and products. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with customers and suppliers and build valuable relationships. This year, we are proud to be showcasing two incredible brands – Gioia Shrimp and Aquatlantis – alongside our own offerings.”

Director Maurits van de Pol declared that Aquadistri UK had an incredible PATS in 2024, and the company was thrilled about the move to the NEC. “We’ll be showcasing our standout brands – Superfish, offering exceptional value-for-money aquarium products; Colombo, providing professional-grade medications designed with the hobbyist in mind; and Aquafleur, featuring premium-quality aquarium plants cultivated in our very own Dutch nursery. It’s going to be an exciting opportunity to share our passion and top-notch products with our existing and potential new customers.”

If retailers and buyers need more encouragement to register now for free entry to the three-day exhibition, here’s a quick summary of the popular visitor attractions:

  • The biggest ever New Product Showcase
  • The Aquatics Zone, a dedicated area for aquatics, watergardening and reptile exhibitors
  • The New Starter Zone, a space hosting new businesses and start-ups

PATS 2025 is also being staged alongside BETA International, the leading equestrian trade show taking place in Hall 2 at the NEC on Sunday, 28th September and Monday, 29th September 2025. It means that retailers and buyers will be able to visit both shows on those days, and to make things simple visitors will only have to register once, with BETA International visitors being given access to PATS and vice versa.

PetPlace – which has stores in Llangefni, Ruthin, Mold, Abergele and Gledrid, Oswestry, and a HQ in Kinmel Bay – has collected a staggering £94,789 for Hope House and Ty Gobaith children’s hospices.

Led by Managing Director Sion Pritchard, the independent retailer organised a series of events and activities while sponsoring and supporting innumerable campaigns over the years.

The Snowdon Sunrise Trek, annual ball and the Summer Bumper Raffle are just some of the milestones and challenges PetPlace has got behind for the Conwy Valley and Oswestry-based hospice centres, which care for hundreds of babies, children and young adults every year.

An open day at the Mold store, Gledrid Dog Weekend and Equine Day, Pride in the Park Llangefni and Abergele, and the Final Moments Matter appeal – which saw them donate £10,000 after match-funding the £5,000 pledged by customers in just five days – were other notable achievements.

Reflecting on the news, Sion said: “We received a letter telling us how much we had donated over the years and were completely overwhelmed, it was a huge shock.

“As well as supporting events we have collection tins at all our stores which have contributed to this figure, and despite our long-standing commitment to do all we can for the hospices, for us to be so close to the £100,000 mark is amazing.

“Thank you so much to our incredible and loyal customers, we could not have done this without you – we look forward to smashing through the £100,000 barrier very soon for this brilliant charity.”

Andy Everley, Fundraising Team Leader for Hope House Tŷ Gobaith, said: “PetPlace have had a long-standing and very loyal relationship with our hospices, one which we are very grateful for.

“Through staff fundraising, sponsorship of many key events and supporting match funding campaigns, they have hit this great total which has made a huge difference to local children and families living with a life-threatening condition.

“Huge thanks to Sion and his team thinking of their community first and choosing to support Hope House Tŷ Gobaith – you're all amazing.”

Pets at Home share price recovers after profits update

Shares in Pets at Home recovered slightly after the retail group published a pre-close update in respect of its financial performance in the past year...

Shares in Pets at Home recovered slightly after the retail group published a pre-close update in respect of its financial performance in the past year.

Following the announcement on Monday, the share price dropped by over 11% after the retailer and vet chain reported that trading was  in line with expectations but gave weak guidance for the new financial year.

The group revealed that its fourth quarter performance had been broadly as planned across retail and vets “against a challenging and volatile UK consumer backdrop”.

Shares recovered slightly by nearly 3% yesterday (Wednesday) to 221p.

Lyssa McGowan, Pets at Home CEO, said: “We are making good progress in delivering our strategy of building the world’s best pet care platform, although the market remains challenging with subdued consumer confidence and the business facing significant external cost headwinds in 2025.

“Our Vets business is delivering very strong growth and continuing to outperform the market, with a robust pipeline of new openings in place for the coming year leveraging our unique practice owner model. In Retail, we’re confident that with our major infrastructure investments behind us, we are well placed for future growth as the short-term pressures ease and the consumer environment improves.

“I would like to thank our incredible colleagues and practice teams, whose care, support, expertise and advice creates a better world for pets and the people who love them, every single day."

Pet firms cause a stir with April Fools hoaxes

Pet companies have been causing a stir this week with April Fools hoaxes, including HayPigs! launching Aqua Wheeker, the world’s first premium bottled water for guinea pigs...

Pet companies have been causing a stir this week with April Fools hoaxes, including HayPigs! launching Aqua Wheeker, the world’s first premium bottled water for guinea pigs.

HayPigs! announced that Aqua Wheeker was a natural spring water, sourced and bottled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Renowned for its incredible purity, and rich mineral content, it is said that the local Peruvian population, including the native guinea pigs, have for generations thrived due to the health benefits from drinking it.

Available in a 320ml and 600ml glass bottle, Aqua Wheeker was said to be compatible with most pet bottle spouts, making it easy to mount in your cage and very gluggable for your piggies.

HayPigs! co-founder Helen Cridland explained: “It is clear that demand for premium bottled water is on the up, with consumers increasingly choosing to buy water that is free from contaminants and enriched with minerals, rather than risking taking it from the tap. Given this trend, it clearly makes sense that we’d want the same for our pets! Water is an essential part of any small animals’ diet, and it is important that this water is kept clean and fresh for our little ones. With Aqua Wheeker, water is life!”

Husaand and co-founder Rik continued: “We’ve been trialling this water with our own guinea pigs for months now and they have certainly got a spring in their step! We had one lazy piggy that would spend most of her days sat with her head in the hay hopper. Since drinking Aqua Wheeker™ she’s been like a new sow, zooming about her cage and doing laps of the outdoor run! Hydration is clearly super important for guinea pigs, so whatever source you choose, make sure to always offer plenty of fresh drinking water with your feeding hay. Your piggies will love you for it!”

Meanwhile, Dorwest announced it was launching a new dog bottom-flavoured toothpaste ‘Sniffy Bum Bum’.

The company stated that Sniffy Bum Bum toothpaste had been developed by experts to support the calming pathways in dogs to create a toothpaste all dogs will love. Brushing dogs’ teeth can sometimes be a real chore for owners, but with a tasty toothpaste on the menu, Sniffy Bum Bum provides a calming and interesting scent all dogs will love.

Jo Boughton-White Msc, Managing Director at Dorwest comments: “Every dog loves a bum sniff. We’re really proud of Sniffy Bum Bum and feel this is exactly what all dogs want. A toothpaste they simply can’t get enough of.”

New data reveals how much Brits spoil their pets

A new survey by UK Pet Food reveals that nearly half (48%) of British pet owners go above and beyond to treat their furry friends like family – kissing them, singing them to sleep, and even taking them on date nights...

A new survey by UK Pet Food reveals that nearly half (48%) of British pet owners go above and beyond to treat their furry friends like family – kissing them, singing them to sleep, and even taking them on date nights.

There’s no doubt we love our pets madly, almost 1 in 5 (17%) say they have date nights with their pets, with men more likely to do this than women, over half (52%) admit to indulging their pets with special treats, and 35% give their pets massages.

Further to this, over a quarter (31%) of people listen to music with their furry friends, and 19% read their pets stories. 24% of pet owners are incorporating their pets into their routines, taking them to cafes with them, and nearly one fifth (17%) even sing them lullabies to help them to sleep.

With more recognition in UK society that pet ownership is not only something we enjoy, but something that is also good for us, it’s clear our love for animals has never been stronger.

But, while cherishing our pets is a trait Brits should be proud of, UK Pet Food is keen to leverage National Pet Month to help educate the public on how to channel this love wisely with its ‘Love Them Madly, Feed Them Wisely’ campaign, aimed at empowering pet owners to make well-informed choices when it comes to our four legged-friends’ diets.

Celebrity Vet, Cat Henstridge aka ‘Cat The Vet’, who is an ambassador for the campaign said: “There’s no doubt in my mind that as a nation, we love our pets unconditionally and we’re showing this more than ever before. The great news is, with such huge variety and choice of available across the pet food market, we shouldn’t need to make compromises in other areas of life to ensure they are well-nourished and cared for. As long as pet food is labelled ‘complete’, this means it provides all the nutrients your furry friend needs to stay happy and healthy. It’s really important that owners can feel confident and happy about the food choices they make for their pets – no matter what their budget or lifestyle might be.”

UK Pet Food is committed to providing clear and trustworthy guidance to help pet owners feel confident about their choices.

Nicole Paley, Deputy Chief Executive at UK Pet Food, explains: “As this survey shows, in the UK we adore our pets and naturally want to give them the very best. While we welcome choice and diversity in a thriving pet food market, all the feeding and diet options that are now available means navigating supermarket aisles, or shopping online can feel overwhelming at times for pet owners.

“UK Pet Food was established over 50 years ago as an independent body representing the whole pet food industry and offers pet owners impartial advice and information. So, whether a pet eats a traditional kibble, a raw diet or opts for fresh food, owners can be sure to find the advice and reassurance they need on our website and can always reach out to us for additional help and support.”

Independent retailers association warns of 'Atrocious April'

The British Independent Retailers Association has voiced serious concerns over the latest figures from the BRC-NIQ Shop Price Index for March 2025...

The British Independent Retailers Association has voiced serious concerns over the latest figures from the BRC-NIQ Shop Price Index for March 2025.

Speaking about the report, which can be downloaded from the BRC website, Bira, which represents over 6,000 independent businesses across the UK, highlighted that while overall shop prices remain in deflation, the acceleration of food inflation poses significant challenges for both retailers and consumers.

Also reported:

  • Shop price inflation increased to -0.4% year on year in March, against a decline of -0.7% in February. This is above the 3-month average of -0.6%.
  • Non-Food inflation increased to -1.9% year on year in March, against a decline of -2.1% in February. This is inline with the 3-month average of -1.9%.
  • Food inflation increased to 2.4% year on year in March, against growth of 2.1% in February. This is above the 3-month average of 2.0%.
  • Fresh Food inflation decreased to 1.4% year on year in March, against growth of 1.5% in February. This is above the 3-month average of 1.3%.
  • Ambient Food inflation increased to 3.7% year on year in March, against growth of 2.8% in February. This is above the 3-month average of 3.0%.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira CEO, said: "The retail market continues to show a concerning split with essential categories such as food showing increased inflation while non-essential sectors are forced into deflation to drive sales. Food inflation has a disproportionate impact on consumer spending habits, significantly reducing demand for non-food items that many independent retailers specialise in.

"We're facing what can only be described as an 'Atrocious April' for independent retailers. Non-food shops are already experiencing deflation and reduced margins, and will now see costs rise by inflation-busting amounts – business rates up by 140% and the National Living Wage increasing by 6.7%. The Spring Statement did nothing to bolster consumer confidence. It's an 'Awful April' for consumers, but an even more atrocious one for independent retailers."

Dorwest Herbs supports hospice through ‘Stampede by the Sea’

Award-winning herbal pet care company Dorwest Herbs has announced its sponsorship and support for Weldmar Hospice through local initiative ‘Stampede by the Sea’; bringing together Dorset communities, schools and artists this spring.

Award-winning herbal pet care company Dorwest Herbs has announced its sponsorship and support for Weldmar Hospice through local initiative ‘Stampede by the Sea’; bringing together Dorset communities, schools and artists this spring.

For eight weeks, a herd of elephant sculptures will line a unique art trail for everyone to enjoy across Bridport, West Bay and Lyme Regis. ‘Stampede by the Sea’ will feature around 50 sculptures, aiming to highlight the ‘elephant in the room’ when it comes to palliative care. All elephants have been designed by local talented artists and can be located on the trail via the mobile app map.

Last year, Weldmar Hospice cared for more than 1,500 people across Dorset, all for free from the expert team of nurses, doctors, carers, therapists, counsellors and social workers. Dorwest Herbs’ support, through sculpture sponsorship, will firstly directly fund the Inpatient Unit for 24 hours. At the end of the trail, each elephant will be sold at auction to raise further vital funds.

Dorwest’s elephant, aptly named ‘Herbie’, will be available to visit from 28th March, designed by local artists and twin sisters Rachael and Philippa Corcutt specialising in children’s illustration. The Dorwest elephant is (of course) dog themed and displays scenes of walks by the coastline.

MD Jo Boughton-White comments: “It’s a privilege to be a sponsor for Stampede by the Sea, especially as many of our staff have direct experience with Weldmar through their own friends and families.

“The work Weldmar does is incredibly important, so it is fantastic to be able to support and help fund further care, as well as have a bit of fun with our elephant ‘Herbie’ along the way! We can’t wait to visit Herbie and the other elephants as a team.”

Download the app 'Stampede by the Sea' and visit ‘Herbie’ to scan his QR code to access a special treat when you’re there!

Manchester-based premium pet products retailer OurPetsLife (OPL) has secured £300,000 in funding, led by GC Angels alongside private investment from crowdfunding platform, Seedrs. The investment will fuel OPL’s ambitious plans to expand internationally, develop exclusive brands, and reach more pet owners worldwide.

With UK pet owners spending £18bn annually and the global pet care industry projected to hit £300bn by 2027, OPL is well-positioned for significant growth. Already partnering with 22 distributors across 27 countries, the business is now focused on capturing a larger share of this rapidly expanding market.

Founded in 2018 by Elliot Roxby, OPL started as a bedroom business with just £5,000 in seed funding. In just five years, it has grown into a thriving retailer, surpassing £1m in annual turnover.

Offering a mix of six in-house brands and more than 40 third-party brands, OPL sells premium pet products directly through its website and Amazon, as well as through 2,000+ pet shops worldwide. From grooming essentials to ear cleaning kits, treats, and accessories, OPL caters to pets of all shapes and sizes.

With this latest funding, OPL plans to:

  • Expand its product range and introduce more exclusive brands
  • Grow its global distribution network in key international markets
  • Strengthen its team and customer service operations, creating new jobs in Manchester
  • Continue innovating in the pet care space, delivering high-quality products that enhance the bond between pets and their owners

Ranvir Singh, Investment Manager at GC Angels, said: “The pet care industry is booming, and OurPetsLife is tapping into a massive market opportunity. In 2023, Butternut Box secured £280m in funding, showing the huge potential in this space. OPL’s focus on premium, innovative products positions them for long-term success, and we’re excited to support their journey as they scale globally.”

Elliot Roxby, Founder & CEO of OurPetsLife, added: “I've always dreamed of building something special for pets and their owners. What started as an idea in my bedroom has grown into a global business, and this investment is a key milestone in our journey. With GC Angels’ backing, we’re not just expanding – we’re innovating, ensuring pet owners worldwide have access to the best products for their pets.”
