The Nutriment Company acquires The Dog’s Butcher

The Nutriment Company (TNC), a leader in premium natural pet food, has made its first acquisition of the year – The Dog's Butcher, a renowned UK provider of premium raw dog food based in Devon.

The Nutriment Company (TNC), a leader in premium natural pet food, has made its first acquisition of the year – The Dog's Butcher, a renowned UK provider of premium raw dog food.

This acquisition of the Devon-based firm marks a significant milestone as TNC strengthens its position in the UK raw pet food market.

The Swedish company made four acquisitions in 2024, including three in the UK – Totally Natural Pet Products, Natural Instinct and Pet Treats Wholesale.

The Dog's Butcher is a pioneer of raw dog food in the UK. The brand is renowned for its high-quality, hand-picked ingredients, sourced locally from Devon, Cornwall and the Southwest of England, and its wide range of products, with an assortment of over 100 different minces, chunks and bones.

Founders Joanne and Daniel Mcmahon have built a reputation for innovation and customer focus, serving over 150 trade customers and countless pet owners with passion and dedication.

Joanne McMahon said: “We were delighted when we met with the people from TNC. They really shared our commitment to raw feeding, and the quality of ingredients. They are committed to the pet industry and that was really important to us”

Peter Roy, UK MD for TNC, commented: ‘I’ve known Jo and Daniel for many years, and always admired their business. In early days of raw feeding I was in East Anglia with Anglian Meat Products, they were in the South West doing an excellent job, with great quality products – the pioneers of 80/10/10 and excellent quality ingredients across all their range.

“The Dogs Butcher range really gives TNC a new exciting range to offer retailers. It’s a real pleasure to welcome them into The Nutriment Company. This is great news for retailers, giving them a real choice with different formats and raw food brands –Nutriment, Natural Instinct and Dibo – available from one manufacturer.

‘Perhaps most importantly we’re pet people, it’s in our DNA, and every decision we make is designed to support the industry. We want to bring innovation to the pet industry, and give the independent stores the tools, products and margin to be successful in a very competitive market.

“In 2024 we introduced Gently Steamed as a raw alternative, and in January 2025 we launched nuggets in the UK. The demand for both ranges has been phenomenal – giving retailers a real choice for all formats.

“More innovation is planned in 2025 and we look forward to seeing everyone at Crufts, Edition Dog Live, PATS and dog shows throughout 2025.”

Anders Kristiansen, CEO of The Nutriment Company, commented on the acquisition: "We are extremely happy to welcome the The Dog's Butcher team to The Nutriment Company. It's a passionate team that has managed to maintain a consistently high-quality standard since inception and as such it is no surprise that customers highly value the product quality as well as diversity of the assortment.”

Pet shop owner calls for shoplifting crackdown

The owner of a family-run pet retail business has called for stiffer prosecutions and better police response to the growing problem of shoplifting.

Ali Pettitt, who runs three pet shops in Norfolk with husband Adrian, believes that without more support, the efforts of small and independent retailers to reduce crime seem futile.

Ali was prompted to post CCTV images of a suspect on social media after the theft of boxes of pet treats from outside the Pettitt and Boo shop in Catton, Norwich. A man has potentially been identified from the picture, but no arrest has been made.

Front of Pettitt and Boo's Catton store, off Fifers Lane in Norwich.

“We were expecting the delivery of pet treats during daytime in early December, especially as we were in the phase of build-up for Christmas,” explained Ali. “The following morning, our team were surprised to find the delivery at the back door and the carton damaged. Several boxes had been taken out.

Rear of the shop showing the shared delivery area with the neighbouring Co-op store.

“The delivery driver had left them at the back door after the store had closed, instead of taking them back to the depot. At about 4am the next day, a guy is seen on the CCTV from the Co-op store next door. He’s seen taking as many boxes as he can physically hold and carrying them across the car park.

“The theft seriously impacted our stock for the December month, with many of our regular customers disappointed that their dog’s favourite treats were not available.”

Battling against theft is becoming a huge problem for independent retailers like Ali and husband Adrian.

Ali, who posted a CCTV image (right) of the suspect on the store's Facebook page, added: “Shoplifting seems to be on-the-rise but via a wider profile of individuals. For example, we find repeated cases of customers using their own insulated bags at the freezers when selecting raw foods. They then take the full bag to the till and tell staff there are ‘x-amount’ of packs, in the hope that the bag won’t be checked. When we do check though, on as many as one in five cases, we find the quantity stated is inaccurate. Given that the number in the bag is always one or two more than the amount stated, rather than one or two less, it feels like it is less likely to be a case of miscounting, which would give examples of both greater and lesser quantities on spot-checks.

“We also notice it with the pick & mix treat counters. Customers will say there is an amount of x treats in a bag, but more and more frequently we find there are an extra one or two.

“Whilst not ‘traditional’ shoplifting, these are methods that a variety of people will employ to get something that they haven’t actually paid for.”

Incidents of regular shoplifting are on the rise too – from flea and worming treatments to toys.

“The frustrating thing is that shoplifters know the likelihood of prosecution is very, very low,” said Ali. “Last year we had a ‘customer’ who picked up a ball thrower and walked straight out of the shop – no concealing efforts applied at all. When staff confronted her outside, she gave it back with a shrug of the shoulders.

“We are doing what we can to reduce the likelihood of being a target for shoplifters. One of the most effective methods of prevention is just to speak to every customer upon entry. Often framed as great customer service (which it is), speaking to people as they come into the store means they are aware that the staff have observed them.

“What we really need as a strong deterrent is robust prosecutions and police response. Without that support, our efforts to reduce crime seem futile.”

Over 100 companies already confirmed for PATS at NEC

As the UK and international pet industry enters a New Year with great expectations, PATS 2025 at the NEC Birmingham will be one of the highlights of a busy and exciting year.

The Pet & Aquatics Trade Show takes place in Hall 1 at the NEC from Sunday 28th September to Tuesday 30th September 2025, and with still nine months to go before the show more than 100 companies have already confirmed their participation.

“The demand for stand space at PATS has been great, with many exhibitors booking larger stands as they seek to take advantage of the extra space that the NEC provides,” said PATS event director Gordon Thomas.

“It’s always exciting to reach certain milestones like breaking through the 100-exhibitor mark so soon – it shows there is a real appetite for PATS 2025 and that the move to the NEC has been really warmly welcomed.

Showcasing all the latest launches under one roof, the show’s reputation has grown impressively over the past 16 years since launching in 2009. With such a winning formula, PATS has become the ‘must-visit’ event for UK and international retailers and buyers.

Companies and brands to have already secured their stand space include: Ancol Pet Products, Company of Animals, Danish Design, Flamingo Pet Products, flexi, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, James & Steel, Johnson’s Veterinary Products, Kennelpak, KONG, LickiMat,  Pedigree Wholesale, Pet Trade Innovations, Petface, Pets Choice, Scruffs, Su-Bridge Pet Supplies, TRIXIE, and Wilsons Pet Food.

The early exhibitor stand bookings of Belgian company Flamingo Pet Products and German brands flexi and TRIXIE proves that PATS is now regarded as a must-attend international exhibition.

Flamingo Pet Products will be exhibiting at PATS for the first time and the company’s global head of sales and marketing Dave Diels said his team was excited by the prospect of showcasing the wide range of products in the UK. “Flamingo Pet Products has over 50 years of pet excellence, offering over 8,500 snacks and accessories for pets. With expertise in private label, trusted sourcing, and a 95%+ service level, we ensure pet owners worldwide enjoy top-quality products. Together, we make pets happier! Visit our website at www.flamingo.be for more information.”

Flexi will be returning to PATS 2025 after an absence, and Flexi’s Adrian Hind said the brand was excited about appearing at the show. “Being staged at the NEC with its strong transport links, this three-day event is a must for all pet buyers, both UK and internationally based. We look forward to welcoming customers, old and new, as we will showcase our wide range, including Xtreme, One and our latest innovation Select.”

Shaunie Blore, area sales manager of TRIXIE UK, explained the reasons behind her company’s early booking:“The move to the NEC in Birmingham this year gives us the added advantage of having more space to showcase both our latest product innovations and our extensive range of existing products. PATS always serves as an important platform for networking within the pet industry. Each year, we are delighted by the positive, professional atmosphere that PATS offers, and we are eager to return to continue building on our relationships and strengthening our presence in the UK.”

Australian brand LickiMat will also be returning to PATS after a successful show in 2024. “The UK team at LickiMat thoroughly enjoyed meeting customers, both familiar and new, as well as connecting with other exhibitors at PATS 2024,” said Alison Pilkington, from the brand’s marketing and operations department. “The enthusiasm and support from attendees was truly inspiring, and the scope to connect with other exhibitors was invaluable. We’re already looking forward to continuing these conversations at PATS 2025 at the NEC in Birmingham.”

PATS 2025 will retain all its popular features:

  • New Product Showcase and Awards
  • Aquatics Zone
  • New Starter Zone
  • Grooming Workshop

IPN pioneers sustainability in pet food manufacturing

Inspired Pet Nutrition has made a significant breakthrough in its sustainability efforts by achieving 100% diversion of food waste from landfills, thanks to its partnership with sustainable waste management company Waste Mission.

This milestone marks a critical step in IPN's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in waste management.

IPN, known for its popular brands Wagg, Harringtons, Barking Heads, and Meowing Heads, has been a family-run business since 1923. With a vision 'to become the nation’s most sustainable, most loved home of pet nutrition brands', IPN became the first major UK pet food manufacturing business to go carbon-negative in 2020.

Faced with the usual waste management challenges of any food-producing company, IPN sought a waste management partner who shared its passion for sustainability and innovation. Waste Mission clearly emerged as the ideal choice, offering not only to divert waste from landfills but also to provide sustainable solutions that minimise environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and even monetise waste streams.

The collaboration between IPN and Waste Mission addresses the growing consumer demand for ethical and sustainable products. A Deloitte survey revealed that 30% of consumers stopped buying products due to ethical or sustainability-related concerns, while 50% saw the importance of circularity in the product lifecycle.

Circularity refers to a business model in which waste is eliminated, and resources are continuously reused. This approach transforms waste into valuable resources, contributing to environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.

IPN faced various waste management hurdles, including:

  • Meat and fish juice on packaging: These materials were hard to handle.
  • Raw Meat Waste: Inefficient and environmentally unfriendly disposal methods require a modern solution.
  • General Waste Management: Disruptions caused by waste accumulation necessitate an intuitive waste management approach.

“These challenges are not unique to IPN, but we wanted to show leadership in how we addressed them,” said James Lawson, Director.

“Sustainability and waste reduction are crucial for our people, pets and planet approach to ESG. Partnering with Waste Mission reflects our dedication to creating happiness for our pets, their owners and the supply chain.”

Waste Mission implemented a tailored waste management solution for IPN, including:

  1. Recycling meat and fish juice – impacted packaging: Specialised processes were introduced to recycle these materials, diverting them from landfills.
  2. Recycling Raw Meat Waste: Innovative recycling methods ensured 100% recycling of raw meat waste.
  3. 24-Hour Service Level Agreement (SLA): A 24-hour SLA was established to ensure efficient waste collection and management, prevent operational disruptions, and simplify daily communications.

The collaboration yielded outstanding results:

  1. 100% Landfill Diversion: All waste, including complex materials, is now diverted from landfills.
  2. 100% Recycling Rate: All waste collected from IPN is recycled, aligning with their sustainability goals.
  3. Uninterrupted Operations: The 24-hour SLA has ensured zero disruptions in IPN’s operations due to waste management issues.
  4. IPN Pet Food

IPN continues to prioritise sustainability with Waste Mission's support, substantially reducing its environmental footprint.

“We urge other pet food manufacturers to join us in prioritising sustainability and waste reduction,” said James.

“High-quality pet food can be produced while adopting eco-friendly practices and meeting the growing needs of conscious consumers.”

By achieving a 100% recycling rate, IPN has set a benchmark in sustainable waste management. Waste Mission remains committed to continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring IPN's long-term success in sustainability.

PIF launches Business Toolkit to support UK pet firms

The Pet Industry Federation has launched the first phase of its comprehensive Business Toolkit, designed to help small and medium-sized pet businesses across the UK plan and operate more effectively. This initiative comes at a critical time as the UK’s recent Budget introduces significant cost increases impacting businesses from April 2025.

The initial release of the Business Toolkit includes financial planning tools and a business plan template, both tailored to the unique challenges of the pet industry. These essential resources equip pet business owners to forecast, budget, and plan for long-term resilience. Additional components, such as marketing guidance and compliance resources, will roll out over the coming months.

Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF, said: “The UK pet industry is incredibly resilient, but we recognise the pressures small businesses face in light of rising costs from the recent Budget. The PIF Business Toolkit aims to provide our members with the tools and guidance to navigate these challenges, improve efficiency, and strengthen their operations for the future.”

With increased tax rates, higher employee costs, and operational challenges looming, many small businesses are bracing for tighter margins. Even if businesses are not directly affected by the higher costs, their suppliers will be and may well pass these on to their customers.

The PIF Business Toolkit is designed to help businesses:

  • Plan Ahead: Customisable templates for budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and understanding new tax implications.
  • Stay Profitable: Pricing strategies and tips to manage costs effectively.
  • Prepare for Growth: Strategies to diversify income streams and adapt to market demands.

The Business Toolkit is available exclusively to PIF members and reflects PIF’s ongoing commitment to helping pet businesses succeed in a changing economic climate.

Pet business owners can access the toolkit via the PIF Members’ Area at: https://petfederation.co.uk/login/

Pet food firm raises funds for further growth

Wetherby-based Naturaw Pet Food, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of raw pet food, has secured a six-figure growth funding package from NPIF II – Mercia Debt Finance, which is managed by Mercia Debt as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II)...

Wetherby-based Naturaw Pet Food, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of raw pet food, has secured a six-figure growth funding package from NPIF II – Mercia Debt Finance, which is managed by Mercia Debt as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II).

The funding will enable Naturaw Pet Food to continue its rapid expansion following an 18-month period in which it has almost doubled the size of its team from 18 to 35, and won the King’s Award for Enterprise for excellence in sustainable development.

The company has just doubled its floorspace by taking on a second 15,000 sq ft unit at Thorp Arch Estate. The NPIF II funding will enable the business to complete a fit-out and provide additional working capital as it steps up production.

Naturaw provides high-welfare meat from British farms in plastic-free packaging. The company, which is a registered B Corp, supplies over 15,000 customers consisting largely of pet owners, but also including independent pet shops and grooming parlours.

The business was founded by Jess Warneken in 2014 after her Rhodesian Ridgeback, Louis, developed recurrent ear and skin problems. She started to feed him a fresh meat-based diet which transformed his health. Given the difficulties in sourcing high quality raw food, Jess saw the opportunity to start Naturaw. She was joined by her partner, Tom Johnson, who created the brand identity and later by Chris Broadbent, an experienced company director.

The couple used the proceeds from the sale of their house to set up their first manufacturing operation in 2018. Since then, the company has been doubling its turnover every two years and moved to larger premises three times to keep up with demand. It now offers over 20 recipes, with all production, packing and distribution carried out from the Wetherby premises.

Jess Warneken, founder and Director, said: “Dogs are designed to eat fresh, natural, raw food rather than processed ingredients and we’re passionate about creating the best raw food we can. As demand continued to rise, it was clear we had outgrown our existing premises and we had no option but to take on and fit out a second unit. Together with the funding from Mercia and NPIF II, we now have both the space and the finance we need to continue growing the business.”

Gary Whitaker, of Mercia Debt, added: “Naturaw is a purpose-led business that has quickly built a following amongst pet owners and become a leader in its field. Access to funding is vital for fast-growing firms like these as they are constantly having to invest in bigger premises, new equipment and staff and they need more working capital. We are pleased to be able to support the Naturaw team as they take the business to the next stage of its development.”

Lizzy Upton, Senior Manager at the British Business Bank, said: “Naturaw is a brilliant example of a Yorkshire business using NPIF II funding to boost growth and unlock potential, supporting with increased team headcount and premises expansion. It’s this growth that helps to push the region forward and build a more resilient local economy.

Haroon Qammar, Senior Economic Development Officer with Leeds City Council, advised the company on business expansion.”

The £660m Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II) covers the entire North of England and provides loans from £25k to £2m and equity investment up to £5m to help a range of small and medium sized businesses to start up, scale up or stay ahead.

The purpose of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II is to drive sustainable economic growth by supporting innovation and creating local opportunity for new and growing businesses across the North of England. The Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II will increase the supply and diversity of early-stage finance for the North’s smaller businesses, providing funds to firms that might otherwise not receive investment and help to break down barriers in access to finance.

Walking an anxious dog is a challenge many dog owners face, but a new product from My Anxious Dog is set to revolutionize the experience. The brand’s Yellow Space Awareness Lead Slips are thoughtfully designed to give anxious dogs a voice, ensuring they receive the understanding and space they need during walks.

The innovative lead slips feature bold yellow coloring and embroidered with clear messaging that helps other dog owners immediately understand an individual dog's specific needs. Messages like “In Training,” “Do Not Touch,” and “Keep Dogs Away” are just a few of the options available, addressing common challenges faced by dogs with anxiety, sensory impairments, or health issues.

“Walking an anxious dog shouldn’t feel overwhelming,” says Sarah Jones, founder of My Anxious Dog and creator of the #dogsinyellow campaign. “These lead slips empower owners to advocate for their dogs, creating a calmer and a more confident walk.”

Features and benefits of the Yellow Lead Slips

  • Clear Communication: Each lead slip carries a concise message that informs others of the dog’s unique needs, such as:
    • “In Training” for dogs focusing on specific skills.
    • “Scared of Men” for dogs with fear-based triggers.
    • “Caution in Pain” for elderly or recovering dogs.
    • “Anxious” for dogs experiencing unease or fear.
  • Practical Design: Lightweight, durable, and fitted with two popper fasteners, the slips securely attach to standard or flexi leads.
  • Safety First: Reflective trim enhances visibility during low-light walks. These lead slips also feature generous dimensions (38cm x 6cm) to ensure visibility while remaining practical for daily use.
  • Convenient and Washable: Machine washable at low temperatures.

The “Yellow” lead slips are a game-changer for both nervous & reactive dogs and their owners. By eliminating the need for constant explanations or confrontations, the slips reduce stress, foster understanding, and make walks more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Sarah Jones, inspired by her own experience with her anxious cocker spaniel Bella, understands the profound difference these tools can make. “Before yellow, I struggled to advocate for Bella. Now, people respect her space, and walks have become a much calmer experience for both of us. These lead slips are the first step for anyone who feels apprehensive about using yellow as a space-awareness tool.”

Owners who have tried the Yellow Lead Slips report life-changing improvements:

  • “Since using the slip, other dog owners immediately understand our dog’s needs. We no longer feel the need to avoid other dogs, and our walks are finally stress-free.”
  • “The slip says what I can’t in the moment. It’s simple, effective, and has made such a difference for me & my anxious dog.”

The Yellow Lead Slips are available now through My Anxious Dog’s website, offering a range of messages tailored to different needs. For more information or to order, visit www.myanxiousdog.co.uk

Major rebrand for leading raw pet food firm

Leading raw pet food business Mersey Raw has undergone a major re-design of its packaging as part of its strategy to focus on the retail side of the business...

Leading raw pet food business Mersey Raw has undergone a major re-design of its packaging as part of its strategy to focus on the retail side of the business.

The re-brand will help Mersey Raw, which has seen an impressive 300% growth rate in its first two years of business, to give its products excellent freezer and shelf appeal.

After extensive customer, Mersey Raw has come up with a range of packaging that meets all the requirements of the research findings for sustainability, functionality, practicality and stackability.

Mersey Raw’s new packaging consists of tubs made from Polypropylene (PP5), a high-quality, durable, lightweight, and food-safe material that ensures hygiene and safety for raw pet food. By switching to a semi-transparent white design, Mersey Raw has made their tubs widely recyclable, solving the issue of the previous black tubs, which were not recyclable at all UK recycling facilities. The semi-transparent white tubs not only look fresh and appealing but also allow customers to see the quality of the product inside, which helps to build trust between consumer and manufacturer. They are stronger, leak-proof and more reliable, ensuring the food stays fresh and secure during transport and storage.

The new colour-coded labels improve product visibility, making it easier for customers to quickly identify different products, whether on shelves or in freezers. The labels also provide clear, detailed information about the product composition and nutritional analysis, helping pet parents understand exactly what they’re feeding their pets. Each label features a QR code, which links to more information about the brand, the products, and the benefits of raw feeding, providing an even deeper connection to Mersey Raw.

With lack of space in freezers being an issue for many raw feeders, the tubs are designed to be stackable, allowing customers to neatly organise their freezers without wasting space. Their sturdy design ensures they stay in place when stacked, and the semi-transparent finish helps customers quickly locate the product they need without opening multiple containers.

Mersey Raw was founded by Liverpool entrepreneur Ben McIntyre, who was recently interviewed about his business on the popular Pet Business Disruptors podcast.

Ben said: “I did not initially set out to start a Raw Dog Food company. I simply created raw minces for my own dogs, (Luna a four-year old German Shepherd and Pluto a five-year old French Bull Dog,) and then family and friends asked me to do the same for them and then from there it really started to grow.  A local shop was given samples and immediately placed an order which meant I had to get approval from DEFRA, register with the local council and secure premises to start supplying our products. It took around four months to achieve this. That is how Mersey Raw was born. We now have a portfolio of 90 shops and a direct customer base of over 7,000.

“The quality of our products are unrivalled on the market along with the service we provide with next day delivery seven days a week directly To Your Door and the convenience of resealable fridge safe, environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging, we take all the hassle and worry out of feeding your dog a raw diet from quality products to quality service.”

Mersey Raw currently offers 20 varieties of meat, offal and bone minces which stick very much to the core principles of feeding the raw diet using quality human grade meats such as chicken, pork, lamb, beef, venison, turkey, rabbit, duck, tripe, goose and even goat. They also offer a comprehensive range of natural treats.  All meat is DEFRA approved and with 20 recipes to choose from, there is something there for even the most sensitive of tummies.

Two Battersea-based pet business entrepreneurs, Rory Hanna, and Archie Wilson, the founders of successful business start-up, PAWD DRINKS, are backing a campaign to get people out walking their dogs in the winter months by organising a social walk for dog owners in Battersea Park. It takes place on Sunday, 26 January starting at 10.30 am and meeting at the Albert Gate opposite the Albert Pub.

As well as having the opportunity to meet new people and fellow dog owners, the first 50 participants to arrive will win a PAWD DRINKS goody bag filled with dog treats, dog bags and other pet accessories. Also in attendance will be a pet photographer, pet nutritionist and behaviourist to give advice and attendees will also be able to try samples of the new WELLNESS Drink that PAWD DRINKS are about to launch.

Walk Your Dog Month is an international initiative designed to dust off those January blues and get people out and about, to meet other dog walkers and improve their own and their dogs’ well being. It is an ideal opportunity to lose a few pounds that have been put on during the festive season and also to help avoid pet obesity.

The third Monday in January is officially known as Blue Monday (20th January) and is based on a formula which calculates the weather conditions, the level of debt, the time since Christmas, time since failing our New Year’s Resolutions and low motivational levels.

To combat the January blues many people believe that this is a good time to start exercising, take up an activity you have wanted to do for ages and enjoy time with friends and family. Being with your four-legged friend also gives pet owners the opportunity to strengthen the bond between owner and dog as they enjoy long winter walks together.

Lynne Jones, owner of Therapeutic Mentoring who coaches individuals in all aspects of mental health and is a dog owner herself, says: “The simple act of taking your dog for a walk every day is beneficial not only for your health and well-being but the love and connection that this daily routine also provides helps to nurture you emotionally and spiritually as well.”

PAWD DRINKS believes that it is vitally important to exercise your dog in the winter months and to feed a good diet to improve your dog’s immune system and to protect the joints, coat and with quality supplements.

PAWD DRINKS is a new revolutionary and groundbreaking range of liquid health supplements, scientifically crafted to target the common health issues faced by our beloved dogs. These innovative products are the result of extensive research and development by world-leading animal nutritionists including Dr. Farshad Goodarzi Boroojeni and are veterinary-approved. Each formula has been carefully crafted to not only address specific health concerns but also contribute to the overall well-being of our four-legged friends.

PAWD DRINKS are pH neutral and contain no acidifiers or preservatives and are available in three varieties, JOINTS, CALMNESS  and WELLNESS (soon to be launched) and each contains active ingredients and botanicals to tackle the common ailments and behavioural issues faced by dogs. They also help to keep your dog hydrated. The drinks have made the finals of several pet industry awards in 2024 and Rory and Archie won a place on the NatWest Accelerator Programme which is designed to help promising new businesses.

As well as feeding a nutritious diet and supplements, PAWD DRINKS also offer the following advice when it comes to walking you dog in the winter months:

  • Make sure that they have a warm protective coat on and a strong collar and lead that are reflective in some way so that they are visible in the dark nights or in bad weather.
  • Make sure to dry their coats and paws after a walk and if out in snowy conditions, wash their paws to make sure that there is no salt left in the pads and fur as this can lead to issues if they lick their paws and moisturise them to stop cracked skin. Keep the fur short around the paws as well and preferably wear boots in snowy weather.
  •  It is also important to plan ahead and look for cues if your dog has had enough of the cold.
  • Carry a first aid kit with you if walking in remote areas and carry a flash light.
  • Carry a drink for yourself and your dog.

UK pet industry mourns sad passing of Steve Dixon

The UK pet industry has been mourning the sad passing of Steve Dixon, who died at the age of 70 just before Christmas. He had held area sales manager roles with Spillers Pet Foods, Supreme Pet Foods, Burgess Supafeeds and Burns Pet Foods before retiring in 2022.

Steve was universally liked and respected in the pet product industry and to hear the shocking news from his brother Rob and sister-in-law Tracey that he had passed away on 17th December at only 70 years old was a blow shared by those who knew him in the pet industry.

Lynda Ward, owner of Pet Trade Solutions, paid tribute to Steve.

“I knew Steve from 1984 when he joined the sales team at Jenks Brokerage, covering the North East and Scotland (whilst I covered West Midlands and North West) selling products on behalf of Quaker Europe and Purina Petfoods with heavy influence on breeder contact and support at dog and cat shows.  We travelled to shows and sales meetings together and continued to periodically ‘chew the fat’ from then on.

“After 11 years with Jenks/McCormick UK, Steve’s career in the trade took him through Area Sales Manager roles with Spillers Pet Foods, Supreme Pet Foods, Burgess Supafeeds and, finally, from 2009, Burns Pet Foods.

“During those years he developed a strong portfolio of clients including pet food wholesalers, managing directors of companies with the largest market share in the UK, influential buyers for national retail outlets, vets and many independent retailers.

“Exceptionally reliable, professional and with a ‘can do’ attitude, he was friendly, honest and trustworthy with an excellent reputation.

“I had no qualms about putting him forward for any role and, having introduced him to Burns I wasn’t surprised some years on that when they approached me to find an Area Manager candidate for another area, the brief was simply, ‘We’d like another Steve Dixon please. An impossible brief – he was truly a ‘one of a kind’.”

Steve’s funeral will be held at the main chapel of Markeaton Crematorium (Derby) on Monday 20th January at 2.30pm, donations to charity only please.

Tracy and Rob said: “We’re wearing a splash of colour – Steve wouldn’t want all black.”

A pet business podcast that started in the summer of last year has quickly become a global phenomenon, attracting viewers and listeners from all across the world and showing the impact that the pet industry has on the global economy.

The Pet Business Disruptors podcast was started by Clayton Payne, a pet trade expert who has worked his way up in the pet industry from helping in his family’s pet shop to working in the wholesaler and manufacturing sectors and advising pet businesses as a consultant. The purpose of the podcast was initially to get real on the ground information on the pet industry out there and the broadcasts have since turned into a valuable hub for both pet owners and pet businesses alike by giving background on innovative products, introducing the people behind these products and offering hints and tips on how to succeed in the pet market..

Clayton says,

“Being a category disruptor for over 25 years in the pet industry I know how hard it is to get new and innovative ideas out into the market and my desire was to give companies that were doing something different the platform by which to talk about this. I see the podcast as a unifying bond in the industry that can help anyone at any stage in their career think differently and push themselves forward,”

With over 20,000 downloads a month the podcast has become one of the most downloaded pet podcasts across the world reaching number 1 in its category in Ecuador, Hong Kong, Finland, UAE, Singapore and number 2 in the UK and top 5 in Canada, Ireland, Belgium and Poland, top 20 in France, Germany, South Africa, India and Australia and Top 100 in The USA. It has become a global phenomenon that even broke into the all podcast chart in Ecuador at number 124 only 60 places behind Joe Rogan!

Guests on the show to date have included:  PAWD DRINKS, DotDotPet, Mersey Raw, Doggy Doggy Yum Yum (Baboo Gelato), The Dog G8 Company, Fetch, Karnlea and many more. Clayton also talks to pet nutritionists, experts in the reptile side of the pet industry and consultants who offer specific services to businesses in the pet trade.

Such as been the success of the podcast that Clayton has been approached by major companies who want to sponsor episodes.

Dog owners could be fined £2,000 for not following one simple rule

Experts from TopDog are warning of a little-known dog collar rule that could cost pet owners a lot of money if not followed correctly...

Experts from TopDog are warning of a little-known dog collar rule that could cost pet owners a lot of money if not followed correctly.

Being a dog owner bears a lot of responsibility, with perhaps one of the most important being able to identify your dog correctly.

Under UK law, all dogs must be identified by a tag attached to their collar with their name, address and contact number.

And the law is very specific on this detail, so if you are a dog owner who prefers to use a harness instead and attaches the tag here, you could face a £2,000 fine if caught with it not on a collar.

John Skinner, co-founder of TopDog, says: “It is a common misconception that you can simply put your dog’s identification tag on whichever you choose to walk them with, be that a collar or a harness, but that is not true. I will always advise that if you choose to wear a harness, make sure you get one that allows room for your dog to wear their collar too.”

John continues: “At TopDog we’ve designed our harnesses so dogs can wear both their harness and collar comfortably together. Our best-selling harness, the It’s Just An Illusion design, is also in our adjustable range – so dogs can wear it with their collar from puppy stage to adulthood.”

Wearing an identification tag is incredibly important, especially if your dog runs off whilst on a walk and needs to be correctly identified and the owner called. Many other laws are worth knowing when out and about, including another lesser-known law around livestock.

Dogs must be under control out in public, but if you are walking near a farm with sheep or cows, for example, extra care should be taken not to ‘worry’ them. Owners must prevent their dogs from attacking or chasing livestock, or being out of control off lead in a field or else they could be fined a maximum of £1,000. Farmers also have the right to shoot dogs if they believe they are worrying the livestock on their land.

A big thing that gets members of the public frustrated is seeing dog poo left on the pavement, which if caught, owners could face an on-the-spot £100 fine, or £1,000 if prosecuted.

And in some places, councils are cracking down further by fining people for not carrying poo bags at all. Canterbury, Daventry and North Somerset will issue fines of up to £100 for anyone not having at least two poo bags.

Going for a walk on the beach with your pup is another thing that dog owners have to be mindful of or risk facing a fine. Most beaches have restrictions from May to September where if you are caught you could face fines of up to £1,000.

There are however many beaches in the UK where you can walk your dog all year round, so it is worth checking and planning ahead.

Head to TopDog’s blog for a full list of fines that dog owners could face if not following the rules.

December footfall decline sparks concerns for independent retailers

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has warned that disappointing footfall figures for December show mounting pressures on independent retailers, with concerning implications for 2025 as business costs continue to rise...

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has warned that disappointing footfall figures for December show mounting pressures on independent retailers, with concerning implications for 2025 as business costs continue to rise.

The latest BRC-Sensormatic IQ Footfall Monitor report revealed decreases across most retail locations:

  • Total UK retail footfall decreased by 2.2% (YoY)
  • High Street footfall decreased by 2.7% (YoY)
  • Shopping Centre footfall decreased by 3.3% (YoY)
  • Retail Park footfall remained flat at 0.0% (YoY)

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent retailers of all sizes across the UK, said: "These figures paint a worrying picture of the challenges facing independent retailers. The decline in footfall during the crucial Christmas trading period is particularly concerning, as this is typically when retailers need to generate the revenue that will see them through the quieter months ahead."

"Looking ahead to 2025, we see little reason for optimism unless the government takes decisive action. With retailers facing increases in National Insurance contributions, National Living Wage, and business rates, many independent stores will struggle to maintain viability. We urgently call on the government to reconsider the planned business rates increase for small retailers – this could be the difference between survival and closure for many independents on our high streets."

CSJ targets January podge

Fat2Fin complete dog food helps to satisfy a hungry appetite with no more craving food, titbits or treats...

CSJ’s Ceri Rundle says: “It’s a fact that we humans over-indulge at this festive time of year and dogs are often treated to more food and extra treats too…so the inevitable January podge!

Fat2Fin complete dog food helps to satisfy a hungry appetite with no more craving food, titbits or treats.

It’s a tasty food that’s rich in white fish and rice – ideal for overweight or greedy dogs as well as dogs who love their food and put on weight a bit too easily.

Fat2Fin supports digestive health and coat condition and the low-calorie recipe can be used as part of an effective weight loss plan with a satisfied dog that isn’t piling on more pounds.

Whilst our nutrition experts developed the recipe, we also asked our customers what was the ideal size and shape for the kibble. The answer was ‘not too big and not too small’. The kibble has to be big enough that greedy dogs can’t just wolf it down and small enough so little mouths can crunch it up easily and according to our customers we got it just right.

So, when thinking about New Year resolutions and helping a podgy pet is on the list, our tasty Fat2Fin is the ideal solution … for a year-round healthy and happy dog.”

Burns retail business closes popular pet shop

Burns Pet Shop at Haverfordwest Showground in Pembrokeshire closed its doors for the final time on Christmas Eve after a planning application was turned down by the local council...

Burns Pet Shop at Haverfordwest Showground in Pembrokeshire closed its doors for the final time on Christmas Eve after a planning application was turned down by the local council.

Owners Burns Retail & Hospitality Ltd announced the decision on the store’s Facebook page, stating:

“Dear customers, it is with great regret that Burns Retail & Hospitality Ltd has to announce the closure of our lovely pet shop at Haverfordwest Showground on Tuesday 24th December 2024.

“Despite significant time, cost and effort over many years, planning permission has repeatedly been denied by Pembrokeshire County Council and we have no other option but to close the shop.

“Considering our shop is surrounded by many other retail businesses immediately adjacent, this is a frustrating interpretation and unfortunately will mean valued employees losing their jobs and customers having to travel further afield for their Burns products.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our many wonderful customers who have supported us over the years. We would also like to thank our staff for their hard work and commitment to the shop, which has made it the success it is.”

The John Burns Foundation, which owsn and runs a nearby dog park, is actively seeking solutions to keep it open. It will be closed until further notice.

Another Burns Pet Shop, located in Narberth on Moorfield Road, is set to stay open.
