Dogs and their owners, led by ethical pet food brand Edgard and Cooper, protested for better dog food in London at Potter’s Field. The call is for more transparency and a higher nutritional bar within the pet food industry.

The protest is calling on dog owners to sign a petition which will raise awareness to U.K government issues of meat content standards, transparent labelling, and improved handling and transportation of meat.

The petition’s top three demands

• Increased meat content standards: Pet food should be required to contain a significant and truthful proportion of the claimed meat source, ensuring that pets receive the nutrients they need. Shockingly, pet food can currently claim it is made with a specific meat even if it contains as little as 4 per cent of that meat.
• Transparent ingredient labelling: Clear and accurate labelling of pet food ingredients should be mandated to empower pet owners to make informed choices about their pets' diets.
• Improved handling and transportation: Regulations should be enacted to ensure that all meat used in pet food is handled, stored, and transported under proper conditions to guarantee freshness and safety. 

The protest follows the findings of a survey of dog owners commissioned by Edgard & Cooper which found that two thirds (64 per cent) of owners believed their dogs should have the same quality of food as humans. The study also found that three quarters (75 per cent) of dog owners would not eat the equivalent food of their dog, such as ‘meat meal’, an overly processed and nutritionally low value meat source food.
