An online fundraising appeal launched in memory of popular pet shop owner Barbara Mullaney has more than doubled its £1,500 target within days, following her tragic death in a road traffic accident at the end of June.
The appeal, which has so far raised £3,175 from 133 supporters, will fund a memorial bench in Barbara’s memory, giving family, friends and customers a lasting place to remember her.
Barbara, the owner of Animal Fayre pet shop in the Wiltshire town of Cricklade, was killed after a crash on the B4696 on Tuesday, June 30.
The fundraising appeal was launched by Patrick Maher, who wrote on the JustGiving page: “For over 34 years Barbara Mullaney was the heart and soul behind Animal Fayre in Cricklade. For many, it was far more than just a pet shop – it was a place where advice was freely given, friendships were made, and every customer, whether two legged or four legged, was greeted with warmth, kindness and genuine care.
“Barbara had an extraordinary gift for making people feel welcome. She was known for her empathy, compassion and generosity, always willing to listen, offer support or go the extra mile to help. Her love for animals was at the centre of everything she did, and countless pets in our community enjoyed happier, healthier lives because of her dedication.
“Above all, Barbara was devoted to her family. They were the centre of her world, and the love she shared with them was evident to everyone who knew her. She leaves behind not only a close and loving family but also an entire community that feels privileged to have known her.
“To honour Barbara’s remarkable life and the difference she made to so many people and animals, as suggested by several of her customers we are raising funds for a memorial bench where family, friends and members of the community can pause, reflect and remember a truly special lady.
“The bench will serve as a lasting tribute – a quiet place to sit, remember happy times and celebrate a life lived with kindness, compassion and generosity.
“Every donation, no matter the size, will help us create this lasting memorial. Any funds raised will go towards the purchase and installation of the bench (subject to local authority permission) and its commemorative plaque. Should we exceed our target, any additional funds will be used in consultation with Barbara’s family to donate to an animal charity.
“If Barbara ever offered you advice, shared a smile, helped one of your beloved pets, or simply brightened your day, we hope you will consider making a donation. If you are unable to donate, simply sharing this page would mean a great deal.
“Thank you for helping us create a place where Barbara’s kindness, love and legacy will continue to inspire for many years to come.”
