New pet care product suppliers quickly gain traction

Pet trade expert Lynda Ward predicts that the industry will continue to grow rapidly despite uncertain economic times, due in part to the number of innovative companies entering the market...

Pet trade expert Lynda Ward predicts that the industry will continue to grow rapidly despite uncertain economic times, due in part to the number of innovative companies entering the market.

Lynda, owner and founder of Pet Trade Solutions, reports: “Once again our industry has ridden out severe hits to the general economy.

“Not only have businesses survived, but many have thrived and bucked the trend of closures, especially in the general retail channel, since Covid first arrived.”

Lynda, who utilises her 30 years’ experience in the trade for dedicated recruitment and marketing solutions, added: “Obviously it helped that pet shops were allowed to stay open during lockdowns, plus so many people bought pets for the first time, therefore boosting sales.

“However, it’s been particularly interesting to note how many new suppliers and manufacturers have not only entered the market, but quickly gained traction.  We in the pet trade have grown used to new products and suppliers appearing with a splash, but too often disappearing within the first couple of years.

“I’ve always advised clients that they must be particularly confident that they will be able to finance their business (especially when engaging salespeople – my speciality) for the first 3 years.  If they can properly pay the best employees so gain a following for their brand and products during those first years they will be on track for an exciting and successful long term.”

Lynda is always happy to personally advise on any aspects of recruitment and marketing strategy and can be contacted on 07946 743784 or at lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com

Clare Balding joins Pets at Home’s dog walking event

Pets at Home joined forces with broadcaster and author Clare Balding to host its first Winter Walkies event at Tatton Park in Cheshire. More than 300 people and almost 250 dogs joined the event to kickstart the company’s new winter ‘Five Minutes More’ campaign.

The UK’s largest pet retail group wants to encourage pet owners to avoid cutting short the daily dog walk – whatever the weather – by adding five minutes to their regular walk to help their dogs stay a healthy weight this winter.

Clare Balding said: “When you have a dog you really will do anything and everything to make sure they stay healthy and get the exercise they need, no matter the weather. It was amazing to see so many wagging tails joining in the fun at Tatton Park. You can’t underestimate how important the daily dog walk is for your dog but also for you, so I hope dog owners up and down the country will feel inspired to get out there this winter.”

Dr. Leigh-Anne Brown, Practice Owner and Veterinary Surgeon at Vets for Pets, said: “It was great to see so many people at our very first Winter Walkies event. Whilst it was a lot of fun it was also the chance to remind people why walking your dog regularly – come rain or shine – is the simplest, yet most important thing you can do to keep your dog a healthy weight for its breed and size. As the number of overweight dogs in the UK continues to rise, daily exercise this winter has never been so important.”

OSCAR secures exclusive route to market for new chews

OSCAR Pet Foods has its nose to the ground when it comes to sniffing out the latest and greatest pet products, and AniVatio Projoint Soft Chews are a fantastic discovery.

Joint care is hot news in the pet industry. Improvements in nutrition and veterinary science mean pets are living longer: but living longer means increased wear and tear for joints. Understandably, owners wish to support their pet’s mobility and comfort with effective supplements.

Anivatio ProJoint soft chews work differently from traditional joint supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin, the unique formulation works by targeting the dog’s immune system remotely in a process called oral tolerisation. Unlike glucosamine and chondroitin, UC-II makes immune cells less sensitive to Type II Collagen – keeping the immune system from attacking the joints. This promotes long-term joint protection for improved agility and comfort.

AniVatio’s formulation uses a simple, one dose system for all breeds and sizes – avoiding any dose-related complications. And because nighttime is the best time for cell rejuvenation, owners can settle their pets to sleep with a soft, tasty treat that not only eases discomfort but also promotes restoration for the new day ahead.

AntiVatio ProJoint is suitable for both dogs and cats and uses undenatured collagen UC-II® – clinically proven to reduce stiffness, improve mobility and renew cartilage in pets. Clinical trials show a marked reduction in overall pain by 90% and exercise-associated lameness by 78% after just 120 days – truly impressive results.

Managing Director, Richard Martin, explains: “As a company, we’re proud to put pets at the heart of everything we do … so when we heard AniVatio’s ethos is to test products on humans first to discover if they are safe for pets we knew our company values were aligned! We’re always pleased when we can offer something new and exciting to our trusted network of franchisees and AniVatio’s ProJoint Soft Chews reflect our never-ending commitment to provide nutritional excellence. We’re delighted to secure an exclusive route to market for AniVatio in the UK.”

Purina launches PRO PLAN Supplements in UK

Purina has launched over-the-counter PRO PLAN Supplements in UK, following years of research into pet nutrition and understanding pets’ needs...

Purina has launched over-the-counter PRO PLAN Supplements in UK, following years of research into pet nutrition and understanding pets’ needs.

The complementary pet food products have been scientifically designed by Purina, to help support specific needs in pet mobility (dog), natural defences (cat and dog), vitality (cat and dog), skin and coats (cat and dog) as well as promote relaxation (dog).

While the use of nutritional supplements among people has been popular for years, it has traditionally been rare to give pets nutritional supplements in addition to their daily meals. However, the global pet supplements market is growing, driven by a rising number of pet owners, consumer preference for natural ingredients and the humanization and premiumization of pet products (1).

For many, pets are part of the family and increasingly owners are looking for ways in which they can take more proactive care of their pets’ health.  According to a 2021 Pet Supplement Report, 20% of pet owners in the European Union currently give their pets supplements in the form of powders, oils, capsules, tablets, paste or chews. 77% said they would consider pet supplements if they were confident that their pets would benefit from them.

Stella Demesticha, Vet & PRO PLAN Business Unit Director, Purina Europe, said: “At Purina we believe nutrition is the foundation for keeping long-term health, wellbeing, and an amazing life for your pet. Based on more than 120 years of pet care expertise, our PRO PLAN Supplements range is expertly formulated to deliver targeted products at all stages of your pets’ life.”

Purina PRO PLAN Supplements are an easy way to give pets additional targeted benefits, designed to be served once a day and in addition to usual meals. The range has been created to be highly palatable, with a very high level of acceptance and enjoyment, ensuring that pets love eating the products.

Just a few months after the highly successful 2023 edition, Zoomark is launching its 2025 registration campaign with a completely new image that will accompany all the communication for the international pet food and pet care show from now to the next edition, scheduled for 5th to 7th May 2025 in BolognaFiere.

Zoomark is proud to present Spotlight on Pets, the visual identity project that heralds a new direction in the communication style that has characterized the event for years, helping to make it an international point of reference in the pet industry.

The new tagline - Bigger and Bolder – highlights Zoomark's goal of being bigger than ever before (in terms of exhibition space, number of stands, and international visitors) as well as more ambitious in its projects and objectives: an invitation to all B2B professionals in the pet industry to up their game too.

Throughout its previous editions, Zoomark has proven to be much more than a simple product showcase: a genuine partner for pet industry professionals and the ideal place to build new relationships and explore new avenues.

The 2025 edition will feature a host of special projects, events and in-depth discussions that will make taking part in Zoomark even more engaging and full of significant insights for business development.

Opportunities for professional growth, a welcoming, vibrant environment, and the city of Bologna, renowned for its art, culture and world-famous cuisine, make Zoomark 2025 an unmissable event.

While confirming its reputation as a major commercial event that opts for an informative, technical style of communication - a modern, innovative trade show that interfaces with professionals and companies - Zoomark is presenting a new direction for its forthcoming edition, with new colours, a new tone of voice, and a new slogan. These changes gravitate around the real focus of the event: the pets themselves.

The new concept, conveyed in a visual identity based on multiple elements, in a deliberately simple yet highly impactful style, places the spotlight firmly on pets, all pets - dogs, cats, birds, fish, rodents, and more. The tone is playful, fresh, and ultramodern because that's what Zoomark is all about: an essential B2B event that is dynamic, vibrant, and cutting-edge.

Along with the manufacturers, distributors, buyers and specialized retailers from all over the world that have been part of the event for 21 editions, Zoomark is boldly channelling the new needs and requirements of pets, confirming its position as a leader in Europe and a bridge to the rest of the world. It is the best place to tap into the present and future of the pet industry and its mission: the Pet Vision.

The show’s new image communicates this very simple, all-important message: pets, and their needs and demands, are the focus of Zoomark 2025, both in the virtual world, on the revamped website www.zoomark.it and on all Zoomark’s social media, as well as in the real world, in the halls of BolognaFiere, from 5th to 7th May 2025.

This means that from 31 December 2023 breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an XL Bully dog to stray will be illegal. Also from 31 December 2023 XL Bully dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in public.

We also announced that from 1 February 2024 it will also become illegal to own an XL Bully dog unless it is on the Index of Exempted Dogs. We are not accepting applications for Certificates of Exemption yet. Further details on how to apply to keep your dog will be provided soon.

Guidance for owners as well as the breed definition were also published yesterday.

Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey said: “We are taking quick and decisive action to protect the public from tragic dog attacks and today I have added the XL Bully type to the list of dogs prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

“It will soon become a criminal offence to breed, sell, advertise, rehome or abandon an XL Bully type dog, and they must also be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. In due course it will also be illegal to own one of these dogs without an exemption.

“We will continue to work closely with the police, canine and veterinary experts, and animal welfare groups, as we take forward these important measures.”

Vetspeed mourns passing of one of its co-founders

Vetspeed has announced the passing of one of its co-founders, Clive Jackman.

Vetspeed has announced the passing of one of its esteemed co-founders, Clive Jackman. Clive, who passed away peacefully on 27th October 2023, was a driving force in the establishment of Vetspeed's foundational principles and ethos.

Clive Jackman played a pivotal role in the formative years of CPC Cares, Vetspeed’s leading company, specifically in the development of the individual cremation service. His unwavering dedication saw him extend heartfelt support to countless pet owners during their times of sorrow. Clive’s deep connections within the veterinary industry made him indispensable to many, and he was always surrounded by both colleagues and friends.

Clive's indomitable spirit led to the pioneering of pet cremation in the UK during the late 1970s, an innovation initially met with scepticism. Against all odds, his vision became an integral component of end-of-life care for pet owners. The media spotlight of the 1980s sought Clive out as pet cremation emerged as the preferred choice for compassionate pet owners.

Ray Hale, co-founder of Vetspeed, fondly recollects their shared experiences. "I have many memories working with Clive, and I learned so much from him. Clive's legacy continues to resonate, evident in the Christmas cards still received from clients to this day."

Clive Jackman's philosophical approach to life and death was evident in his anticipation of reuniting with his late wife, Sheila, and being surrounded by the cherished pets he had dutifully cared for over the years.

As Vetspeed mourns the loss of its co-founder, the organisation remains committed to honouring his vision and values, ensuring that his compassionate ethos continues to guide its future endeavours.

“I hope that our fundraising journey continues steadily into the new year and leads to another boost to reach our target in 2024.”

The conference took place at St Pancras Square in London, bringing together volunteers, ambassadors, trustees, supporters and partners for the sixth iteration of the event, which took place over two days.

IVC Evidensia was a platinum sponsor for the event, which included guest speakers, interactive sessions, case studies, clinical talks and even a Yoga session to start each day.

Amongst the sessions available there was also the ‘Dean Lester Coleman’ Volunteer of the year award, a survey for volunteers and sponsors, and the recognition of new advocates and ambassadors.

Jade Statt, co-founder of StreetVet, commented: “Our sixth conference demonstrated how far we have come as a charity, especially with some fantastic support from individuals and organisations alike. It is such a testament to the worthwhile work we’re doing and long may it continue.

“We are thrilled that IVC Evidensia not only supported the event but decided to sponsor our 2024 calendar too, which gives us another fantastic opportunity to raise even more for owners and their pets affected by homelessness.”

Bira saddened by figures showing company insolvency rise

The British Independent Retailers Association, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, has said it's 'saddened' to see the latest insolvency figures showing worst year since 2009...

The British Independent Retailers Association, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, has said it's 'saddened' to see the latest insolvency figures showing worst year since 2009.

The figures, released by The Insolvency Service show that insolvencies rose 10% from a year ago in the three months to the end of September.

Statistics for July to September 2023 show that there were 6208 registered company insolvencies. comprising 4,965 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs), 735 compulsory liquidations, 466 administrations, 41 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs) and one receivership appointment.

After seasonal adjustment, the number of company insolvencies in Q3 2023 was 2% lower than in Q2 2023, but 10% higher than in Q3 2022. The last two quarters saw the highest quarterly insolvency numbers since Q2 2009 and the highest numbers of CVLs since the start of the series in 1960.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: "This news is very worrying. Our members are telling us all the time how difficult it is on the high street.

"Comments that are coming through to us and I'm hearing all the time from our indie retailers are that its 'tougher than Covid' and that they are feeling 'worn out'. Indie retailers are resilient and will keep going but they need some support, something to help them through this difficult period.

"It is why we are calling on the Chancellor to use his Autumn statement to retain the retail discount on business rates at 75%. Any increases in this tax burden will push more businesses into closure and there will be many more empty units on the high streets throughout the UK. We have submitted this proposal to the Treasury, along with other ideas such as increasing the employer’s national insurance allowance and reducing corporation tax to help the smaller retailers," he added.

Vet charity issues fireworks advice

Vet charity PDSA is urging owners to take steps to reduce fireworks stress for their pets, after a cat named Boo was nearly scared to death due to the loud bangs.

Two-year-old tabby cat Boo was taken to Stoke PDSA Pet Hospital last October when his owner, Shelly Chatterton (26), found him straining and crying in his litter tray. Shelly said: “I was keeping a close eye on him as he wasn’t his usual active self. But when he cried out in pain when I picked him up, I knew something was seriously wrong.”

At PDSA, Boo was immediately admitted and treated for a blocked bladder. PDSA Vet, Hester Stephens, explained: “A blocked bladder means they can’t urinate at all and this is very serious – without treatment, sadly it’s often fatal.

“The condition is commonly brought on by stress, which some cats can be particularly susceptible to, and can be triggered by any sudden or unexpected changes in their environment.”

Shelly continued: “It was late October, and the only thing different for him was that for the previous few weeks fireworks had been going off at all sorts of times in the field next to my house. They were often right overhead and really loud, and there wasn’t much we could do to hide the noise as they were unpredictable.”

Thankfully, Boo survived his brush with death and was able to go home after a couple of days of intensive care. This year, with PDSA’s help Shelly has since taken steps to reduce Boo’s stress levels, and prepare him for this year’s fireworks.

The 2022 PDSA Annual Wellbeing (PAW) Report found that an estimated 4.1 million dogs and 3.3 million cats in the UK are scared of fireworks. The vet charity for pets in need is urging owners to take steps to help reduce fireworks stress in pets – owners can download PDSA’s free fireworks guide at www.pdsa.org.uk/fireworkready

Here are some of PDSA Vets’ top tips on helping pets through Bonfire Night:

  • Prepare for an ‘early night’ – note the dates of any local fireworks displays so you can prepare. On the day, walk dogs early before it gets dark, and keep cats indoors. Bring any pets living outdoors (rabbits and guinea pigs) inside for the night.
  • Secure your home – keep doors, windows, dog and cat flaps closed and locked so pets can’t accidentally escape. Close all curtains to help reduce light and sound from outside.
  • Create a fireworks den – ideally done in advance, creating a cosy space where your pet feels safe and secure can help them cope. Fill it with familiar blankets, their favourite toys and treats, plus pillows and cushions to help absorb the loud noises. Let them hide here whenever they want.
  • Pick a soundtrack – Play sounds that help disguise the whizzes and bangs of fireworks. This could be music with a repetitive beat, loud classical music or even white noise – pick whatever keeps you and your pet calmest.
  • Use a pheromone plug-in – these are scents that we can’t smell, but that help to relax pets and keep them calm. Ideally start using them a few weeks in advance.
  • Be ready with reassurance – if your pet takes comfort in attention or affection for you, continue to provide this as you normally would. Don’t ignore them if they come to you, try to react as you usually would with them and stay calm yourself as this helps to reassure your pet that they’re safe.
  • Plan ahead – if your pet really struggles with fireworks this season, start early to prepare them. You can use a process called ‘desensitisation’ to help them learn that fireworks noises aren’t scary, but this can take several months. The earlier you start, the easier things will be for them next time.

PDSA sees around 1,300 pets every year with fireworks related issues, such as injuries and phobias. 82% of pet owners agree that fireworks should only be allowed on certain dates and times.

Every day across its 48 Pet Hospitals, PDSA protects the special bond between owners and their four-legged friends. The teams provide veterinary care to sick and injured pets whose owners otherwise couldn’t afford to pay the full cost of treatment. The charity has been keeping people and pets together for over a hundred years. Find out more: pdsa.org.uk/learn-why-were-special

Bonfire Night advice from leading pet business

The founders of Horsham-based safety gate for dogs are offering practical advice to dog owners on how to take the fear out of fireworks for their pet this Bonfire Night and to stop escapes...

Leading Sussex-based business The Dog G8 Company, which appeared on BBC One Dragons’ Den earlier this year with their versatile concertina safety gate for dogs, is helping pet owners to avoid stress or harm to their animals on Bonfire Night.

With the firework season seemingly getting longer each year starting with Halloween, Bonfire Night and then finishing with New Year, combined with the higher noise levels caused by large and commercial display type fireworks which are available for public purchase through various retail outlets and used for back garden displays, many dogs and other pets that are sensitive to the noise of loud bangs will suffer with terrible stress and anxiety. Sadly every year this often leads to pet fatalities.

Founded by Peter Maxted, who started a dog sitting business years ago, The Dog G8 Company recently received a Silver Award at the PetQuip Awards which were held at PATS Telford. They were also one of only 10 companies to make the finals of the Pet Industry Federation’s New Pet Innovation of the Year Award this year.

Their range of highly versatile, concertina gates that aid dog owners with training, prevent dogs from escaping, and reduce the potential risk of an attack on postal and delivery workers coming to the house particularly important as we approach Christmas.. They are also extremely useful at this time of year with the firework season that starts from Bonfire Night and goes up to New Year when dogs can get spooked by fireworks, and can run out of the door and sadly on occasions, lead to fatalities on the road.

During the firework season, The Dog G8 Company often hears of concerns from their clients about how to deal with the noise of fireworks and are keen to know how to keep their dogs calm and safe.  There are a number of practical steps that pet owners can take to avoid undue stress on their pets as Chris Maxted, Director explains: “Dogs in particular seem to have the biggest issue with the sound of fireworks. The Kennel Club states that at least 40% of dogs are frightened of the noise so it is important to make sure that pets are kept indoors in calm and safe environment and that you do what you can to blank out the sound.  These are a few tips that we suggest for pet owners.

“Before Bonfire Night, try to acclimatise your pets to the sound of fireworks. There is plenty of downloadable content which can give you the opportunity to introduce your pet to a variety of potentially disturbing noises in a controlled positive manner. Make sure that your pet is micro- chipped, registered with correct contact details and wearing an ID tag in case they wander off. You could also check with your neighbours to see if they are holding any garden displays to give you time to prepare and in extreme cases, seek the help of an animal behaviourist if time allows.

“Take your dog for a precautionary toilet break before dusk, as your pet may feel too anxious to venture outside until they feel calm has returned.  Always make sure that your garden is escape proof, just in case a firework goes off if you take them into the garden to go to the toilet, as a panicked dog might act out of character or try to escape. Make sure you shut all doors and windows in your home and don’t forget to draw the curtains. This will block out any scary flashes of light and reduce the noise level of fireworks. Don’t forget to block off cat flaps to stop dogs (and cats) escaping. Make a safe den for your pet to retreat to if they feel scared. Make sure to fill it with their favourite blankets, toys, (enrichment ones will distract them) or an item of unwashed clothing, as these may help them feel safe.

“During the fireworks, distract your pet from the noise by having the TV or the radio switched on or play some calming music. Act normal and remain calm, happy and cheerful as this will send positive signals to your pet. Comfort your pets and reward calm behaviour with treats or playing. Never try to force your dog or cat to face their fears and never try and tempt them out if they do retreat, as this may cause more stress. Avoid telling your pet off and if you need to open the front door, shut your dog or cat safely inside a room first. You should never take your dog to a firework display or tie them up outside whilst fireworks are going off.

“To prevent escapes from the front door, installing a portable interior gate is a good idea. A spooked pet can run out into the road and can cause an accident. The portable gate from The Dog G8 Company which appeared on BBC One Dragons’ Den last year has a concertina mechanism which will go across any span and more importantly, the front door. www.dog-g8.com

There are also a number of excellent natural and herbal calming aids on the market that come in spray, tincture, chew or powder formats. If your pet has any health problems, or is taking any medication, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult with your vet.  There are also a number of plug-ins available from vets and pet shops that give off a calming effect for pets.”

Dog wash machine boosts pet shop’s business…and gives owner’s son valuable business insight

A state-of-the-art self-serving dog wash machine is helping successful pet shop owner Robert Dawes give his five-year-old son Freddie an early introduction to the business world...

A state-of-the-art self-serving dog wash machine is helping successful pet shop owner Robert Dawes give his five-year-old son Freddie an early introduction to the business world.

Robert is the owner of Wild West Pet in Cornwall, which he launched in 2012 after a career spent in the pet care business.

He has grown the pet store over the past decade while sticking to his promise of delivering natural products to customers.

One of the latest additions to the pet store is Wild West Wash, which is housed within a sturdy steel container in the store’s car park. It is modelled on a cutting-edge and globally recognised machine called iClean Dog Wash.

Robert takes up the story: “The primary objective behind its creation was to provide pet owners with a hassle-free and efficient washing solution, eliminating the mess and inconvenience of washing their furry friends at home. Additionally, it offers a cost-effective alternative to booking appointments with professional groomers.

“The feedback we have received from our valued customers has been nothing short of phenomenal, with praises for the exceptional quality of service provided and the unmatched convenience the machine offers.

“The establishment of this venture was a collaborative effort between myself and my young son, Freddie, who is only five years old. Freddie actively participated in setting up the container, assisting me in laying the flooring, and even takes responsibility for its maintenance by regularly washing it down and keeping the environment tidy. Engaging in these activities has been instrumental in teaching him invaluable life skills such as work ethics, business acumen, and the gratification that stems from hard work.

“Furthermore, the success of this venture has had a profound impact on Freddie's education. The revenue generated by the machine now contributes directly towards his private schooling expenses. This incredible outcome means that with minimal input from me, Freddie is essentially funding his own education through his dedicated efforts.

“By involving Freddie in this venture, he not only gains practical skills but also learns the value of earning and managing his own finances. This hands-on experience instils a sense of responsibility and the importance of financial independence from a young age. Moreover, it provides him with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that his hard work directly benefits his education, paving the way for a brighter future.

“In summary, this heart-warming story encapsulates the meaningful partnership between myself and my son, as we embark on a journey that not only imparts important life lessons but also enables Freddie to contribute towards his own educational aspirations.”

Wild West Wash offers optimal water temperature with different jet settings, and includes shampoo, conditioner, and flea wash. The drier hose has high and low settings for efficient drying. It's easily accessible outside the store with adjacent parking. No booking is required as customers simply turn up and use it whenever needed.

Other successful additions to Wild West Pet include a wide range of own branded food products, which can be found at www.wildwestpet.co.uk and a nationwide delivery service.

PIF Awards 2023 take place next Thursday (Nov 9)

The Pet Industry Federation Awards 2023 take place next Thursday (November 9) at Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, when the UK pet industry finds out the winners of the most coveted awards in the pet industry. See the stories below from three finalists.

Vet practice celebrates double-digit growth

Launched back in 2019, Kent-based Associated Veterinary Services arrives at this year’s PIF awards as both a nominee Pet Service Business of the Year and sponsor of the prestigious Export Business Award.

Launched back in 2019, Kent-based Associated Veterinary Services arrives at this year’s PIF awards as both a nominee Pet Service Business of the Year and sponsor of the prestigious Export Business Award.

These are indeed heady times for a young, ambitious veterinary practice currently enjoying significant, double-digit growth (+29% Vs 2022); a business launched by Dr Veneta Kozhuharova, a leading export-savvy veterinarian, export advisor and canine/feline nutritionist.

Post Brexit, Veneta and her blossoming team spied an untapped opportunity to support seamless animal export, unpicking all the unwieldly and debilitating red tape that can hinder even the most rudimentary travelling procedures, creating a foolproof procedure for individuals and businesses looking for meticulous veterinary guidance at ‘everyday affordable’ price points.

Dr Veneta said: "I could foresee all the unwelcome uncertainty, expense and paper trail bottlenecks that were coming down the track to frustrate families and stifle the export of ambitious British businesses already facing up to the manifold financial unknowns of a precarious Post pandemic world."

In 2021 Associated Veterinary Services announced its arrival as a pioneering, RCVS registered veterinary service with a far-reaching remit to support a diverse array of animal-loving individuals and animal-centric business that needed to keep operating seamlessly across International borders. What began as a simple veterinary vision to support the free movement of both commercially & privately-owned small animals has subsequently evolved to include a pioneering ‘Export Academy,’ which provides best-in-class training for all exporters out of the UK (pets & pets foods).

"It’s certainly been a tough yet rewarding year for our fledgling business," concludes Veneta. "A PIF shortlisting couldn’t come at a better time to remind our small team what a significant distance we’ve travelled in such a short time frame.   So many awards are product centric, so it’s fantastic that the PIF annual awards champions a number of categories that celebrate the UK’s best-in-class Pet Services sector."

Pawer Water, a ground-breaking canine wellness supplement, has been nominated for Best New Product (Health & Hygiene) at the forthcoming PIF Awards.

Nathalie Ohana, founder of Pawer Water, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be nominated as a finalist for the PIF Awards. The response to Pawer Water has been amazing from all areas of the dog market.

“From dog groomers, dog walkers, dog behavioural therapists, independent retailers and major national chains all the way to dog owners, agility specialists, breeders and show dog owners, Pawer Water has clearly set the market by storm..  This reinforced our conviction that the pet industry is evolving and that Wellness and Innovation is highly recognised in the industry!”

Water plays a critical role in maintaining a dog's health, but sometimes our furry companions don't drink enough to stay properly hydrated. Walker & Drake go for the double

Barnsley-based pet food company Walker & Drake, which opened a new £900,000 production facility in the town, has been nominated for two PIF Awards – Best New Product (Food & Treats) and Best Online Business.

Director Tim Matthews, who founded the business with David Taylor and Richard Grant, said: “Walker & Drake was formed with the clear intention of producing a British made, complete nutritional dog food made using the ‘minimal processing’ Cold Pressed technique and good quality ingredients.

“At Walker & Drake we have developed great products with clear nutritional advantages, we strive to create a culture of integrity, to communicate clearly and honestly with our customers, and to educate and support our stockists.

“The shelves are full of too much of the same type of packaging with mixed and confusing messaging. We’re on a mission to change that with big, bold, playful and colourful branding.

“With Cold Pressed being essentially an artisan process (real people operating real machines!)  We can be quite dynamic with our production. We make and bag regular batches to keep best before dates long and move stock quickly through the system. We are particular about ingredient quality and source. We also keep batch samples for traceability and quality consistency purposes.

“We source ingredients within the UK where possible and we feel that with regard to sustainability, we are doing what we can by using as many ingredients that are part of the human food production process.  Our new wet food comes in Tetra Pak cartons.  The single piece of packaging makes it smaller and more compact meaning less lorries on the road, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. Tetra Pak® has its own recycling plant in the UK, enabling its cartons to be remade into everything from roof tiles to toilet roll cores. Their investment in UK recycling means that over 94% of councils collect the cartons, either from the roadside or from recycling centres

“We are delighted to have been recognised by the industry having been nominated for so many awards this year.”
