The successful show closed with visitors and exhibitors agreeing it had been a huge success, with the event delivering an unrivalled platform for the launch of hundreds of exciting new pet product innovations.
The New Product Showcase was a busy area throughout the event, and retailers admitted they were spoiled for choice as they decided on which items to stock in their stores for the year ahead.
Exhibitors agreed the quality of visitors to their stands was exceptional this year, and felt there was a greater degree of confidence being shown.

Toby Massey, co-founder of award-winning Beco Pets, said: "This year was another highly successful PATS for us, our best yet, eclipsing last year's sales, especially from the independent pet food specialist market. And Suzanne Rothman, of Pet Munchies, reported good business on her stand with an impressive amount of orders taken. “The quality of people we’ve met has been excellent.”
The mood amongst visitors was summed up by Gemma Moore, a pet buyer at Longacres Garden Centre, who said: “PATS Sandown is a must-visit event for our team. It’s an opportunity to see all the new launches under one roof and talk to important people in the industry.”
Kent Harvey, managing director of Natural Pet Remedies, said: “This is the first time I’ve visited the show and I’m impressed with the diversity of all the products. There is so much to see.”
Richard Perfitt, of Harleston and Bungay Pet Stores, has been in the pet industry for 20 years and he sees PATS as a great place for networking. “If you have an interest in the pet trade, then you have to come to PATS.”
Organiser Annie Foord said: “We love running this show for the pet industry so it is fantastic to hear that exhibitors and visitors have experienced a brilliant show.”

Pet trade distributors, retailers and dog owners in a basket of countries have signed up for Beco Pets' new eco-conscious Food for Dogs, the company has announced, as it brought its 'Fresh Ingredients Showcase' to PATS Sandown..
Ignoring the doom-and-gloom-mongers who forecast a post-Brexit downturn, many European countries are among more than a dozen who have now forged business links with the award-winning firm to promote their new food range.
Last year, Beco became the first British pet trade company to win two Exporter of the Year awards in the space of five weeks. And the company is also looking forward to securing exclusive deals with its loyal UK customers at the show.
Toby Massey, Beco Pets' co-Founder, said: "We are gearing up for our biggest PATS ever following the recent successful launch of Beco Food for Dogs.
"The widespread international interest in our new range is very exciting. It's great to see so many people joining what we call 'The Meat-Meal-Free Revolution'! We hope others will join in."
So far, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Northern Ireland and Eire have joined Beco's dog food 'revolution'.
Clearly catching the eye of overseas buyers, and in tune with current trends, their new food, containing fresh, human-grade ingredients, comes in three new recipes, free-range chicken, sustainably caught and MSC-certified cod and haddock, and wild boar, and is described as "better for your dog and better for the environment."
Beco's Fresh Ingredients Showcase, in the Beco Buyers Lounge, Stand M1, features fresh chicken, fish and wild boar on crushed ice, along with a host of their food's other healthy ingredients.
Anyone wishing to pre-book a meeting with Beco during the show can email sales@becopets.com

Forthglade, manufacturers of natural dog food, this week has launched two new product ranges – its first ever dry dog food, as well as a selection of grain free functional dog treats...
Forthglade, manufacturers of natural dog food, this week announced the launch of two new product ranges.
The original UK pioneers of natural wet food for dogs, has unveiled its first ever dry dog food, as well as a selection of grain free functional dog treats.
With focus remaining on high quality ingredients and a ‘Junk Free Promise’, the new products further establish Forthglade as one of the leading brands of premium natural pet food.
Cold Pressed, natural dry dog food
The new Cold Pressed dry food for dogs is 100% natural and provides a complete nutritionally balanced meal for dogs aged from 2+months. The wholesome recipes are gently pressed for just a few seconds at low temperatures ensuring all the natural goodness of the ingredients is retained within the meals.
As with all Forthglade recipes, the Cold Pressed range contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and is hypo-allergenic. The meals include 30% duck or chicken, 5% liver and 5% white fish, as well as brown rice, vegetables, fruit, omega 3 oils, vitamins, minerals and botanicals.
Unlike many dry foods on the market, cold pressed is very easy for dogs to digest as it gently breaks down in a dog’s stomach without absorbing water, making it the most natural way to feed a dog a complete dry meal.
Forthglade’s Cold Pressed comes in two recipes – Duck with Brown Rice and Chicken with Brown Rice – and can be served as a complete dry meal or mixed with any of the Forthglade wet food ranges. Available to order from April 2017, the dry food comes in 6kg and 12kg bags with an RRP of £34.99 and £59.99 respectively.
Natural Functional Treats
Forthglade’s grain free hand-baked natural treats will be available in four varieties: There will be a training treat with cheese, a salmon treat to support joints and bones, a turkey based treat for fresh breath and a calming treat containing chicken. All 100% natural, grain free and free from nasties.
Available in 150 gram pouches in cases of seven, the heart-shaped treats will retail at £2.99 per pouch. The treats will be available from May 2017.

Lily’s Kitchen won a top prize for its controversial cat food stand at the famous Crufts dog show.
The stand was designed to raise awareness of healthy and delicious food for felines but this was the last thing dog lovers expected to see at the show.
Hosting the stand at the show was Lily’s Kitchen’s newest family member, ‘Cat Balding’; a feline friendly TV presenter with an uncanny resemblance to the show’s official host; Clare Balding.
Clare Balding visited the stand to interview Cat Balding about her feline thoughts on Crufts and Cat revealed that she felt “far superior to waggy-tailed, simple minded dogs who are subservient to their humans and will do any old trick for a treat."
According to Crufts organisers, Lily’s Kitchen were awarded this top accolade because of the stand’s alternative cat focus and beautiful design. The stand featured daily interactive activities, including ‘Happy Meower’ product giveaways and a visit from Clare Balding herself.
CEO and Founder Henrietta Morrison, says: “We are thrilled to have won Best Small Stand at Crufts 2017, and we are delighted that our first ever cat focussed display was so well received.
"We wanted to put a cat amongst the Bichons this year, and with help from Cat Balding, we feel we’ve definitely succeeded in creating awareness for our cat food range.”

Benyfit Natural launches new Mini recipes
Pet owners often struggle to find food that caters to the higher energy and fast metabolic rate of the ever-energetic smaller/toy breeds so Benyfit Natural has come up with the perfect solution - the new Benyfit Mini Range which are being launched at PATS Sandown...
It goes without saying that every dog regardless of age, size or breed should be fed a good diet to keep it in tip top condition, as the adage says, “you are what you eat!”
Much like humans, dogs need a sensibly balanced, nutritious diet that carefully fits around their lifestyles; and by feeding high quality ingredients with a good meat content you will ultimately end up with a happy, healthy dog; with good teeth, healthy soft skin, a shiny coat and the right body weight that is appropriate to their breed.
Owners of small dogs however, often struggle to find food that caters to the higher energy and fast metabolic rate of the ever-energetic smaller/toy breeds. Inspired to find a solution to this growing concern amongst smaller dog owners, industry specialists Benyfit Natural are proud to launch their all-new Benyfit Mini Range exclusively at PATS.
Based on their existing ranges, Benyfit Natural’s Mini’s combine appropriate amounts of animal protein, vegetables and botanicals in one complete recipe.
Benyfit Natual only uses the best human grade ethically sourced meat which comes from DEFRA approved farms and use muscle meat in all their ranges. The complete diets also contain ground bones, carrot, broccoli, swede, offal, flaxseed oil, kelp and herbs as well as raw eggs all of which offer a natural combination of vitamins, minerals, omega oils and amino acids to produce a healthy skin, coat, joints, thyroid and cell production as well as helping to support the immune system.
The meat in Mini’s is finely minced through a 6mm blade so it caters for small mouths and is available in a selection of varieties which include tripe, chicken, turkey and beef.
Mini’s are also available in life stage formats as well with a Puppy and Senior recipe in both chicken and turkey varieties with added Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the senior food for healthy joints.
The Premium Blend range contains a combination of venison, rabbit and turkey which is ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs. All varieties are designed to help maintain a healthy weight for a dog whatever its age, size or activity level.
Benyfit Natural has recently introduced two new diets that cater for dogs that suffer from specific dietary requirements. Meat Feast is ideal for dogs that suffer from yeast intolerance, itchy skin and hotspots.
Free from ingredients that can cause allergies and intolerances it is also suitable for dogs with diabetes. Sensitive is designed to cater for dogs with pancreatic problems and is low in fat and is ideal for dogs that suffer from renal issues or are prone to stones and Anal Furunculosis.
Diets are available in 200 g bowl shaped BPA free plastic tubs which are re-sealable, made from recycled material and are recyclable.
Visit their stand N16 where you can take part in a competition to win a free freezer packed with best sellers, sample the range and take advantage of show offers which include £100 worth of free extra food when you order a new freezer. For further information visit www.benyfitnatural.co.uk

Cheshire rescue dog awarded ‘Animal OBE’
Vet charity PDSA honours devoted search and rescue dog
An extraordinary search and rescue dog from Cheshire has been honoured today by leading vet charity PDSA for his devotion to duty in some of the world’s most challenging regions...
An extraordinary search and rescue dog from Cheshire has been honoured today by leading vet charity PDSA for his devotion to duty in some of the world’s most challenging regions.
At a special ceremony at Manchester Town Hall, Border Collie Bryn became the latest recipient of the prestigious PDSA Order of Merit* – the animals’ OBE.
Bryn’s award is in recognition of his exemplary service as a search and rescue dog, working with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and UK’s International Search and Rescue Team.
Commenting on the award, PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin said: “Bryn has displayed extraordinary devotion throughout his career and made a monumental difference to search and rescue operations across the world. His story demonstrates the huge contribution that animals make to our lives.”
Bryn’s story
Border Collie Bryn has worked as a search and rescue dog alongside his handler Steve Buckley since he was a puppy.
Steve requested a rescue dog for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, where he worked as a firefighter, after witnessing the incredible work of search dogs while on a rescue mission in India following the 2001 earthquake. Bryn was handpicked from a litter of puppies due to his nature and intelligence.
Steve and Bryn started training and in 2005, at the age of four, Bryn became fully qualified and UKISAR graded.
In 2009, they became one of only four UK dog teams to attain the International Rescue Dog Organisation’s ‘mission readiness test’. The test consisted of seven searches over 36 hours, a 10km march, dog first aid and working at height.
Alongside his work with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Bryn has been deployed to building collapses, missing persons’ searches and gas explosions throughout the UK.
His international work involved working in Japan (2011) after the earthquake and tsunami, and in Nepal (2015) following the devastating earthquake which killed and injured thousands.
Bryn’s ability to search large areas for casualties, with greater speed and efficiency than his human counterparts, was invaluable. It minimised the need for risky interventions when faced with precarious and volatile rescue situations.
As well as helping find casualties within disaster areas, Bryn’s skills have also helped reunite families with lost loved ones, allowing them to be laid to rest.
Later in their career Steve and Bryn also worked for Avon Urban Search and Rescue team. Bryn retired in May 2016 after an outstanding 11-year career.
Commenting on the award, Steve Buckley said: “Bryn has been a dedicated and exemplary search dog throughout his career. He never wavered from his mission and those working with him had complete faith in his detection skills. His skills have been used to set training standards across the world.
“Dogs like Bryn only come along once in a lifetime and I’m incredibly lucky to have worked beside him for the past 11 years. Receiving the PDSA Order of Merit is a fitting end to his distinguished career. I am so proud of him.”
Award Reaction
The PDSA Order of Merit was presented to Bryn by PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin.
Jan said: “I’m proud and honoured to award Bryn his PDSA Order of Merit. His support for teams in dangerous search and rescue situations has made a profound difference to the lives of people across the world. His incredible talent and skills are truly rare.
“Today he joins an honourable line-up of animals that have displayed outstanding devotion and companionship in various walks of life. Although very different, they are all worthy recipients of the PDSA Order of Merit.”
Head of Operational Policy and Assurance at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Gus O’Rourke, added: “Bryn and Steve have been an integral part of our International Search and Rescue Team, always ready to fly out to wherever in the world they were needed. Bryn’s deployments haven’t been without incident; in Japan, where Steve and Bryn went to help in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Bryn received serious life-threatening injuries while searching through the debris. He was treated by a field surgeon for temporary respite until he could get expert veterinary treatment.
“The pair have also been at the forefront of training other dogs and handlers, both nationally and internationally, so the great work done by these teams will continue and evolve. Many, many people the world over owe their survival to the brave, courageous work done by the search and rescue dog teams and I am so proud of both Bryn and Steve for their massive and dedicated contribution. I wish them both a long, healthy and happy retirement.”
PDSA Medals
The PDSA Order of Merit recognises animals that display outstanding acts of devotion above and beyond normal companionship. It also recognises animal acts which represent the special relationship that exists between animals and humans. Bryn is the seventh canine recipient of the honour, which has been awarded 17 times since its institution in 2014.

Colleagues at the Groom Room at Pets at Home have raised £20,000 for Air Ambulance Service, following a nationwide fundraising drive from the 260 salons across the country.
The combined fundraising efforts of the Groom Room colleagues will ensure that local Air Ambulance services can continue to rescue hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year.
Air Ambulance’s lifesaving missions are funded entirely by generous donations, with the service not receiving any government funding. Air Ambulance will distribute the total donation made to regional centres across the country.
The bumper donation was raised after a number of different activities were hosted in stores from September-November in 2016 - ranging from name the dog competitions, fancy dress and great British bark off bake sales.
Colin Archibald, Head of Groom Room at Pets at Home said: “We’re proud of our salon colleagues and customers across the country, for making this impressive donation possible. The lifesaving work that Air Ambulance does across the country makes a huge impact, so we’re delighted to be able to support such an important cause.”
Liz Campbell, Chair for the Association of Air Ambulances (Charity) Ltd, added: “It is an absolute pleasure on behalf of the UK air ambulances to thank The Groom Room management, staff and customers in raising this generous amount that will directly assist saving the lives of seriously sick and injured patients.”

Breakfast is one of the nation’s favourite meal times and was a natural choice to add to the range alongside a top-seller Sunday Lunch.

The novel protein mix of venison sausage meat, ham and egg adds a further point of difference from the rest of the Lily’s Kitchen 400g tin range, encouraging existing shoppers to buy this recipe alongside their current repertoire while also attracting new customers into the brand.
Like all Lily’s Kitchen recipes, the ingredients in our 400g tin have been chosen for their high nutritional content, helping to not just fill their tummy but support the health of their pet.

Natural Pet Products Ltd, distributors for New Zealand pet food brand ZiwiPeak, are showcasing the brand’s new packaging and varieties at PATS Sandown (stand K1).
For over 10 years New Zealand-based ZiwiPeak have been creating recipes for dogs and cats that bring together the best human-grade ingredients from the green, free range farms and blue, pristine southern oceans of New Zealand.
All the ingredients come from sustainable sources which are regulated by the New Zealand government.
As New Zealand is an island nation with strict bio-security there are no infectious animal diseases such as BSE (mad cow) or foot and mouth disease. This means that there are no GMO's, hormones or antibiotics in the meat content.
ZiwiPeak is free from low cost fillers and artificial ingredients that are thought to cause allergies such as colouring or preservatives. There is also no added sugar or salt in ZiwiPeak products.ZiwiPeak’s slow, gentle, twin stage air-drying process crafts a food that is as nutrient dense and digestible as a completely raw diet but safe, clean to handle and can be stored for up to 21 months.
All of their air-dried dog food recipes start with 98% premium New Zealand meat, organs, bone and green-lipped mussel, a great natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin. To complete the remaining part of the recipe, they hand select essential vitamins and minerals, natural kelp, parsley, chicory inulin & lecithin for a complete & balanced diet.
The diet is available to buy in 4kg, 2.5kg, 1kg and 454g bags in Beef, Lamb and Venison varieties. Two new varieties are shortly to be launched, Blue Mackerel & Lamb and Tripe & Lamb.
All of ZiwiPeak’s Moist Dog Food follows the same tasty recipe as their air-dried food but with added moisture canned in small batches. Again the food is as nutrient rich as a completely raw diet but safe, clean to handle and can be stored for up to 3 years.
The canned food now uses chickpea as a natural binder and has NO Agar or TSPP binders. The food is available in Beef, Lamb, Tripe with two new additions, Blue Mackerel & Lamb which is rich in omega oils and Tripe & Lamb.
On the cat food front, the ZiwiPeak recipe follows the same tasty formula as the dog food. The air-dried food is available to buy in 400g bags of Beef, Lamb, Venison and a new variety, wild caught New Zealand Blue Mackerel & Lamb which is high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. This new variety will be launched at PATS in ZiwiPeak’s new packaging and branding style.
ZiwiPeak also offers a Moist Cat Food that is canned in small batches in order to retain the moisture of the product, available in four varieties: Beef, Lamb, Venison and the new Blue Mackerel & Lamb.
ZiwiPeak is not only a good conditioning food helping to maintain a healthy skin, but is also excellent for cats that suffer with allergies, need to maintain the correct body weight and for those cats that may suffer from digestive and renal disorders.
ZiwiPeak can be used as a complete diet or as a great alternative for cat and dog owners that feed a raw food diet for those times when it's not always convenient to prepare raw meat. ZiwiPeak is an affordable choice for cat and dog owners wanting to feed an excellent premium food to their pets.

Dog toy brand Chuckit! has launched an innovative new ‘Hydro’ range of dog toys, set to transform Summer adventures with a water absorbent core for constant hydration.
Combining fun and function for Fido, the unique range, unlike any other on the UK market, is designed to keep parched pooches cool during the hottest summer months, without compromising on play time.
Benefitting from a unique ‘HydroSqueeze’ concept, the HydroSqueeze Duo Tug (Medium RRP, £15.99) HydroSqueeze ball (Medium RRP, £6.99) and HydroSqueeze Bumper (Medium RRP, £14.99) are reimagined versions of classic customer favourites - but with a refreshing new twist.
All of the ‘Hydro’ toys launching this Spring, boast Chuckit!’s first ever super absorbent foam centre, which has been designed to hold and slowly release cold water during play when the toys are squeezed, tugged or chucked!
Another cool addition to the Chuckit! ‘Hydro’ range, the HydroFreeze ‘fill and freeze’ ball (Medium, RRP £9.99) provides hours of chilled play time with its internal freezing core which slowly melts over time, releasing hydrating cold water and providing a fun new dynamic to your dog’s favourite fetch games.
As dogs lose more water during play, especially through panting in warmer temperatures, the ‘Hydro’ range gives peace of mind to owners that even whilst playing, their dog is constantly replenished without the need to halt play or carry cumbersome bowls and bottles on walks.
The durable rubber and polyester shells featured across the range also mean that, as well as having a splashing time this Summer, the robust toys will stand up to the challenge of paws and jaws all year round too.
Will Baggaley, Brand Manager for Chuckit!, comments: “After the success of our Max Glow range, we’re excited to be launching another seasonal range for customers, this time for Summer.
“The Hydro range promises something entirely new for customers looking to expand their pooch’s collection, not only catering to Fidos looking for a refreshing new way to have fun, but also ensuring dogs are safe, nourished and healthy during summer play with cool, hydrating toys.”

SAI Global has announced the addition of a ‘Pet Boarding Scheme’ to its portfolio of pet sector assurance schemes.
Premier independent assurance business, SAI Global is currently the only certification business to offer industry assurance schemes for the pet sector.
Introduction of the new Pet Boarding Scheme, which has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), serves to reaffirm SAI Global’s commitment to animal welfare by ensuring the highest possible level of care is delivered to domesticated pets at certified boarding houses. “As pet owners begin to see the benefits of using certified boarding care and start to demand more from providers, we expect the Pet Boarding Scheme will contribute towards helping raise service and quality of care standards across the industry. This will ensure a more humane outcome for pets in care around the United Kingdom and provide owners with peace of mind their pets are being treated kindly and fairly.” said SAI Global’s Regional Director of Operation for EMEA Anne Scorey.
Across the agricultural industry, SAI Global supports a wide variety of businesses to improve their animal welfare standards. The company has two successful pet welfare quality assurance schemes already operating in the United Kingdom: Grooming Gold Standard and Pet Retailer.
Two levels of certification are available under the new Pet Boarding Scheme; a basic quality assurance level and, for those going above and beyond in terms of service deliverables, a Gold Standard level.
Businesses achieving certification earn the right to use SAI Global’s ‘five ticks’ standards mark which SAI Global owns. Only clients certified by SAI Global may have the privilege to display one of these very highly regarded marks. The recognition in the marketplace gives our certified clients a cutting edge over competitors who are not certified by SAI Global.
From a reputational perspective, certification provides a business’s customers with confidence in the quality and safety of the service; when customers trust a company’s services, it helps secure their ongoing business sustainability.
In addition to the reputational benefits participating in SAI Global’s Pet Boarding Scheme provides, the certification auditing process is designed to further support pet boarding businesses by: Demonstrating dedication to pet care to meet customer expectations for a caring, clean, safe and skilled service; - Identifying opportunities to streamline internal operations, reducing time needed to perform activities, decreasing waste, reducing procurement costs and increasing productivity;
- Ensuring all legal and regulatory operational obligations are met;
- Identifying and mitigating risks and areas for possible improvement within the business,
- Improving quality and safety of services provided; both for pets and employees.
To earn certification, an annual audit of a pet boarding business is undertaken by a UKAS independently witnessed assessor. The audit includes a mix of onsite observation, staff interviews and paperwork checks benchmarked against set requirements.
