Pure Pet Food, which provides personalised dog food delivered to customers’ doors, has completed a major £15m investment round led by Felix Capital and including Mercia Ventures.
The latest investment will support the further expansion of the Yorkshire-based business following a period of rapid growth.
Pure Pet Food was founded in 2013 by childhood friends Daniel Valdur Eha and Mathew Cockroft with a £300 loan. Their ambition was to revolutionise the ambient pet food market by creating an alternative to traditional kibble, through the manufacture and marketing of natural, healthy and easily digestible food for dogs. With UK dog ownership continuing to grow and more pet owners aware of and searching for the benefits of healthy meals, Pure’s founding mission is as relevant as ever.
The business now employs over 100 team members at its manufacturing site and offices in Cleckheaton and serves 40,000 regular customers throughout the UK, who pay a monthly subscription and receive regular deliveries of pet food tailored to their dog’s needs. Since 2013 Pure has served over 42 million meals to dogs all around the country. Pure Pet Food’s sales have grown by over 200% in the last two years to a run rate of £25million, capitalising on the premiumisation of the pet care industry. The company appointed new CEO Roz Cuschieri in April 2023, who has previously held board roles at Warburtons and Genius Food, to work alongside the founders.
This growth encouraged the business to seek additional external investment to fuel further expansion both in the UK and new markets, as well as develop its distribution channels and product categories.
The European pet food market is the second largest globally just behind the U.S. at c.$55b (£42b) 2024 growing at c. 7.5% CAGR to reach $79b (£61b) by 2029. The global e-com pet care market is projected to grow at c.11% CAGR over the next decade.
Felix Capital, the modern lifestyle-focused venture capital firm, investors in the likes of Castore, Moonbug, Deliveroo, Oatly, Papier, Mejuri and Manual, has led a £15m investment round alongside participation from existing investor Mercia Ventures.
Mat Cockroft, co-founder of Pure Pet Food, said: "We are thrilled to partner with Felix Capital, whose team have demonstrated exceptional support and collaboration. Having one of Europe’s leading consumer investors involved in the business marks a significant milestone for us, and we are excited to shape the future of Pure together.
“We are also delighted for the ongoing support from our current investors and team, who believe in our mission and sector. Dan and I have come a long way from starting Pure. Our ambitions have grown alongside the business, and we are eager to continue in our quest to create food that makes a profound impact on the health and happiness of our dogs."
Antoine Nussenbaum, Co-Founder and Investor at Felix Capital, said: “We will always remember the first visit to Pure’s offices. We witnessed everything we like to see in an entrepreneurial journey. The longstanding relentless drive from Mat and Dan, combined with Roz’s amazing experience in consumer-packaged goods is a true recipe for success. In a world where people opt more and more for pethood over parenthood, we are humbled and excited to join this journey alongside Jan at Mercia, as well as Miles Hill and Sarah Doyle from Pure. We will be supporting the whole team at Pure with their mission to become a leading, high-quality, sustainable, and distinctive modern brand for pets.”
Jan Oosthuizen, Investor at Mercia Ventures, said: “Pure has gone from strength to strength in recent years, a testament to the dedication and hard work of Dan, Mat, Roz and the team. The company’s vision and ambition consistently excite us, so we are delighted to continue to support them in their pursuit of future milestones and to partner with Antoine and the wider Felix team.”
Pure Pet food Ltd were advised by Womble Bond Dickinson and BHP LLP. Mercia Ventures were advised by Muckle LLP and Philip Hare & Associates. Felix Capital were advised by Latham and Watkins, and Mazars LLP.
The board will now comprise of:
- Miles Hill – Chairman
- Roz Cuschieri – CEO
- Dan Valdur Eha – Co-Founder and COO
- Mat Cockroft – Co-Founder and CGO
- Jan Oosthuizen – Investment Director, Mercia Ventures
- Antoine Nussenbaum – Co-Founder and Investor, Felix Capital
- Sarah Doyle – Non-Exec Director

Independent Yorkshire-based Burgess Pet Care is to have its Burgess Excel range stocked by Zooplus in Germany, a move that also gives it access to other European markets.
A total of 13 lines will be available, covering the Excel feeding plan that has been developed with vets and nutritionists to meet the specific life stage and lifestyle needs of rabbits and guinea pigs.
A range of rabbit and guinea pig nuggets will be sold, including the groundbreaking Indoor Rabbit and Indoor Guinea pig nuggets, along with treats and hay.
Mark Womersley, Managing Director at Burgess Pet Care, said: “We’re delighted to secure this listing, further opening up major international markets for us. To be able to share the expertise that we have developed in small animal nutrition over decades of research and development will help pet owners do the very best for their animals, and hopefully transform the way these pets are fed as we have done in the UK.”
The range being carried by Zooplus caters for key life stages, with recipes for adult, mature, junior and dwarf species, as well as adapted lines for indoor rabbits and guinea pigs. Also included are two of the UK’s leading feeding hay products and grass-based baked treats. Burgess Excel is recommended by 92 per cent of British vets, a factor it is hoped will resonate in Germany, a country with one of the biggest small animal populations in Europe.
Burgess, which can be traced back to the 17th century as a milling business and now has almost 60 years of pet food production to its name, is behind Rabbit and Guinea Pig Awareness Weeks in the UK, as well as the inaugural Guinea Pig Welfare Forum, held in Birmingham recently. Research supported by Burgess showed that feeding muesli-style diets to rabbits can increase the risk of serious health conditions. As a result of this research Burgess is a muesli free company who believe that any species will selectively feed if given the opportunity.
While 85% to 90% of rabbits’ and guinea pigs’ diet should be quality feeding hay or fresh grass, Burgess Excel nuggets are specially formulated to provide the essential vitamins and minerals required, alongside specific functional ingredients depending on the animals’ needs.

UK Pet Food’s latest report reveals a continued rise in pet obesity across the UK. Surveys of vets and pet owners, expose a sharp contrast in perceptions—while only 4% of owners think their pets need to lose weight, vets say 50% of dogs, along with other species, are overweight.
In response, UK Pet Food has brought together experts to share comprehensive advice and toolkits, aiming to support owners in managing their pets' weight. The report features input from vets, nutritionists, retailers, and Industry experts, with actionable steps and UK Pet Food's "Weighty Areas of Focus" commitments. Even small steps can bring meaningful change, showing that tackling obesity is achievable with the right guidance.
Key Findings:
- Obesity Rates: 50% of dogs, 43% of cats, 31% of small mammals, and 9% of birds are overweight. All figures have increased since the study conducted ten years ago.
- Veterinary Concerns: 100% of vets expressed concern about the growing obesity problem.
- Owner Perceptions: Despite rising rates, 77% of owners believe their pet is at a healthy weight, with just 4% acknowledging the need for weight loss.
Nicole Paley, Deputy CEO of UK Pet Food, stresses the need for awareness of the issue but also recognises the excellent support available: “Pet obesity, much like human health, is a complex issue. While there’s a gap between how owners perceive their pets’ weight and the reality, there’s also a vast amount of expertise and strong commitment from all sides to address this challenge.
"This is our fourth report, published every five years, and for the first time, we’ve included practical toolkits for frontline professionals like vet nurses and retailers. These resources are designed to help initiate important conversations with pet owners, supporting them on their pets' weight management journey.”
As Joy Shutt Head Vet Nurse and BVNA advocate, who is in the photograph below with weight clinic pet, chocolate lab 'Woody', writes in the report: "We need to be talking about body condition from the get-go."
Additional insights into pet care habits:
The report also reveals troubling trends about pet care habits:
- Low Monitoring: Only 25% of pet owners regularly weigh their pets, and just 7% know how to assess their pet’s body condition correctly.
- Lack of Professional Advice: Half of the pet owners surveyed have never consulted a veterinarian or vet nurse about their pet’s weight.
- Feeding Misconceptions: Although 63% of owners claim to follow feeding guidelines, many still engage in counterproductive practices, such as feeding human food scraps (34%) and not weighing out pet food (18%).
Cat Henstridge, Vet Surgeon and Veterinary Influencer as ‘Cat the Vet’ explains: “Fat cats, rotund rabbits, and dumpy dogs have sadly become the norm in our pet population, significantly reducing both their quality and length of life. Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease, making weight loss a challenge for any pet. However, given the severe health risks, it's vital that we, as animal care experts, support owners in helping their pets shed those extra pounds. UK Pet Food’s Obesity Report is a great resource with useful Appendices for professionals so we can work together to encourage change.”

Zoomark keeps growing with more exhibition space

A new hall has just been added to the layout of Zoomark, and a host of new features is planned for next year's show, which takes place on 5-7 May 2025 in Bologna, Italy. Trade association PetQuip will be hosting the UK Pavilion at the exhibition...

Zoomark is ready to confirm its standing as one of the world's leading pet industry events. The 21st edition will be on from 5th to 7th May 2025 in BolognaFiere. Though there are still several months to go, 80% of stands have already been booked, and registrations are still coming in from all over the world.
"The anticipation is already building for our forthcoming event: people in the industry are greatly looking forward to taking part in the show, having an opportunity to gather and look to the future together," commented Pascale Sonvico, Zoomark's Show Office and Sales Manager. "Indeed, after adding hall 28, dedicated to the supply-chain companies, we have just announced another new hall, hall 19. Ideally located to integrate seamlessly into our layout, hall 19 is near of the main entrances of BolognaFiere, Piazza Costituzione."
In total Zoomark 2025 will thus occupy nine halls and cover an area of 78,000 square metres.

Trade association PetQuip will be hosting the UK Pavilion at the exhibition. PetQuip Event Manager Emma Brazier said: “Zoomark has announced some really exciting developments for the 2025 edition of the exhibition, which we are looking forward to be part of. We already have more than 20 exhibitors confirmed for our UK pavilion, with 75% of our current allocated space already booked.
“Our participating companies represent the innovative, creative UK pet market, which we are proud to support. I would urge any UK companies who are considering exhibiting at the show to talk to us soon, to secure your best location.”
Companies who would like to enquire about exhibiting with PetQuip’s extensive marketing and logistical support package, either on the UK pavilion or with a space-only area, should contact emma@petquip.com
Thematic paths
Bigger and more functional too: Zoomark’s new layout has in fact been designed to help exhibitors and visitors alike get the most out of the event, with a more engaging, efficient floor plan that will enhance the show experience for all the industry professionals coming to Bologna, as explained by Luisa Bersanetti, Exhibition Manager of Zoomark: "One of the new ideas we are working on for the forthcoming event is creating specific pathways dedicated to the most interesting market trends, such as sustainability, quality and innovation, designed to optimise and streamline the visitor’s experience and ensure that exhibitors in all halls are guaranteed a steady flow of traffic.
At the same time, we intend for these themed routes to be a precious resource for those looking for new opportunities and ideas to make their business stand out: they will guide retailers, buyers, distributors and importers to the companies and products on show. We believe that this approach, and the revamped layout, will help further optimise the flow of visitors and contribute to the event’s success."
The special areas
The 2025 edition of Zoomark features five special themed areas, designed to anticipate new trends and innovations in the pet industry, with the aim of boosting and facilitating business.
One of the new areas is Next 5.0, devoted to pet-tech, a rapidly growing segment which places technology and innovation in the service of pets' well-being. This area will host both start-ups and established firms, ready to present the most advanced solutions for pet health and safety.
Two very popular features will also be returning. The first is Pet Vision, dedicated exclusively to products and services launched in the months before the event, and the latest trends in the sector (the 2023 show presented more than 500 innovative ideas), accompanied by a competition to reward the best product innovations.
Another crowd-pleaser is Aqua Project, showcasing the aquarium and terrarium industry, which will host not only a display area but also training and educational sessions for specialised retailers.
The two brand-new launches of 2025 are Factory, an area completely dedicated to the supply-chain, and Atelier, which will host the very top of the range in pet wellness and comfort.
Zoomark is not only going to be bigger, but also more content-rich, thanks to a format that is much appreciated by the industry. "We have launched our series of webinars focused on key issues regarding the market, which will be running till May 2025, and we are currently working on the events that will take place during the show and fleshing out new projects that will add value to the user experience, making Zoomark not just the leading meeting place for the industry, but also a platform for discussion, development and innovation" – added Pascale Sonvico – "We are ready to offer an even more inviting, engaging environment, where it will be possible to explore the latest trends, find inspiration and develop your business".
Buyers from all over the world expected
One of the key assets of a successful trade show is undoubtedly the attendance of major buyers. Zoomark has boosted its International Buyers Program, adding new activities designed to "guarantee the presence of a growing number of selected top buyers from the main and emerging markets, thus helping connect supply and demand", explained Bersanetti.
The programme includes the addition of dedicated services to encourage direct interaction between buyers and exhibitors. Thanks to our B2Match matchmaking platform, buyers and companies will be able to prepare for the show in advance, and plan and manage their personal schedule of meetings.
Our partnership with the offices of the Italian Trade Agency in key pet industry markets will bring more international buyers to Bologna. At Zoomark 2025, delegations of buyers, retailers and distributors from the main markets will be primed to meet exhibitors to work on distribution proposals and solutions.
Bersanetti concluded: "We have arranged special welcome and hospitality packages in Bologna during the event. The focal point for all the activities planned for buyers will naturally be the VIP & Buyers Lounge, a meeting place and networking hub that has always been much appreciated."
Zoomark 2025 is already shaping up to be a great success: the place to be to tap into the buzz and the innovative, dynamic outlook of the pet industry.

Jollyes plans to open three new stores before end of 2024

Award-winning retail group Jollyes, which plans to open three new stores before the end of the year, has named the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) as one of its key charity partners. All of its 100-plus stores will be able to accept donations.
The NFRSA helps support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family – the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.
Retired service animals do not receive any additional funds to support their care and upkeep once they are retired and are also unable to receive meaningful pet insurance due to their age and training.
The NFRSA aims to redress this gap in funding and support, helping keep retired animals with the families that have cared for them throughout their lives, who may not otherwise be able to afford the costs of their care, with financial assistance with vet and medical bills.
As The Pet People, Jollyes is proud to support the important work that the NFRSA is doing keeping these wonderful animals with the families they love as their years advance.
Over the next 12 months, all Jollyes’ stores will be raising money for NFRSA through collection boxes in its stores.
Customer donations will also be matched by Jollyes to maximise the work that the NFRSA is able to do in supporting retired service animals and their owners.
Images of retired service animals supported by NFRSA across the UK will be added to community boards in each of Jollyes’ stores with local service animals helping open new Jollyes stores as a guest of honour.
Jollyes’ most recent store opening at Monks Cross retail park in York was opened by retired border force detector dog Pablo.
Pablo, 7, served in the border force on the Yorkshire coast for a number of years but ruptured a disc in his back requiring surgery while running, leading to his early retirement last Christmas.
Cheeky Pablo is now living with new owner Beverley Boynton and has become best friends with her four-year old cat Otis.
Jollyes will open an additional three stores before the end of 2024 in East Kilbride, Leyland and Cardiff, with help from NFRSA animals at each.
Leyland store will be the first to open on Friday 15 November with a formal ceremony the next day.
At 9.00am on Saturday 16 November, the famous Leyland Works brass band will play pet-themed songs for shoppers and at 10.00am retired border force dog Trigger will bite through a string of sausages to declare the store formally open.
Trigger is a seven year old Springador who joined the Border Force in 2017. Trigger served for three years, including at Manchester Airport before retiring in 2020 due to arthritis and is still lovingly cared for by his former handler Samantha.
The NFRSA aims to use funds raised from its partnership with Jollyes to establish regional hubs across the UK to support with local support and fundraising efforts for retired service animals.

NFRSA founder The Countess Bathurst said: “I am incredibly proud that the NFRSA is a key charity partner of Jollyes.
“One thing that is incredibly important to me is that the NFRSA is a community as much as a charity, and that the pets and families we support all feel part of our family.
“It is one of the reasons we are so perfectly aligned with Jollyes – because they are all about supporting their people and customers and making their stores a happy place to be.
“Jollyes is growing at such a high speed and so are we – so there will be a wonderful synergy as we grow together.”
Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes said: “We’re incredibly proud to partner with NFRSA and the amazing Countess Bathurst.
“We know from our colleagues and customers how excited they are to help the retired service animals the NFRSA cares for.
“We’ll do all we can to get behind them over the year ahead.”

Michelle Williams, from Associated Veterinary Services, won gold at the PetQuip Awards after being nominated as Employee of the Year.
Michelle (pictured, second from the right, receiving her trophy) was described by her work colleagues as being a very strong, multi skilled all-rounder, who works in a complex environment, dealing with a huge variety of agencies in her role at Heathrow Airport. She was said to be the ‘go to animal guru’.
Here 30-year-old Michelle shares her views on what it takes to become an influential team member.
What is your current job title and what does your job entail?
“I am an Office Co-Ordinator, which involves managing the incoming workload and distributing this to the team. I liaise with all the clients and book in client visits and essentially form a bridge between our vets and customers for seamless exports of both Products of Animal Origin (POAO) and people’s beloved pets.”
How long have you been in that role?
“Since June 2022.”
How much do you enjoy your work?
“I greatly enjoy my work. I love working in fast paced environments where I am kept on my toes and no one day looks the same. I enjoy both assisting my team and maintaining close customer relations, and love seeing our customers happy with the service we provide.”
What’s the secret to loving your job?
“Putting the effort in to get the rewards back. You have to work hard to see great results and feel that job satisfaction. And, of course, for me personally, an occasional cuddle from a pet always helps.”
Do you work in a team?
“I work with a team of five others, and they are all hard working, always willing to help one another and put 100% into everything they do. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to win this award.”
Why do you think you gained this recognition?
“I think it comes from having a can-do attitude and to remain positive to help support your colleagues. I like to think I help wherever I can and try my best to cope when under pressure to get the jobs completed.”
What does the award mean to you?
“So much. When you have worked hard and then you get the recognition, it’s a wonderful feeling. It makes you feel appreciated and that your hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, which is a wonderful feeling.”
Were you shocked?
“Absolutely!”

Bakers is first pet food brand to use NaviLens technology
Pet food brand Bakers will be supporting blind or partially sighted dog owners, when it launches NaviLens codes on its packaging. NaviLens technology allows people with sight loss to more easily find the information they need on a product when shopping.

Pet food brand Bakers will be supporting blind or partially sighted dog owners, when it launches NaviLens codes on its packaging.
NaviLens technology allows people with sight loss to more easily find the information they need on a product when shopping. The scannable NaviLens codes, similar to QR codes, will be integrated into Bakers packaging from early 2025.
Featuring on all its main meal products – which cover all stages of a pets’ life from puppy through to senior ranges – blind or partially sighted owners with dogs of all ages will be able to benefit from the new addition to their pets’ food packs.
The NaviLens app can detect an on-pack code from up to three metres away, meaning that shoppers can stand at the end of the pet aisle and activate the app on their smartphone from there, rather than having to be near the specific product they want to shop for.
The app will then help pet owners with sight loss navigate to Bakers products on shelf, including guiding them to the correct food based on preferences they’ve already set up in the app, such as life stage, lifestyle or preferred Bakers sub-ranges.
Shoppers will also be able to access feeding guidelines for their pet and can choose to hear more detailed product information including the ingredients, allergen and recycling information. All the information provided through NaviLens will be read aloud in the pet owner’s phone's language of choice, or they can choose to view it on their device, using accessibility tools.
It's free to use; customers only need to download the NaviLens or NaviLens GO apps, which are compatible with all smartphones.
Natalie Golland, Senior Brand Manager for Bakers, said: “The addition of NaviLens to our packs is an industry first and we are very proud to be able to offer this technology to make Bakers as accessible as possible. At Purina, we know that the bond between pets and owners is incredibly powerful, and that feeding time is a key point where this bond is enjoyed and reinforced. We’re delighted that our Bakers brand is able to lead the way within our industry, helping visually impaired owners make feeding choices for their beloved dogs as easily as possible at the point of purchase.
"We are also grateful for the support of the RNIB, whose advice has been invaluable in adopting this technology across our portfolio.”
Daphne Mavroudi-Chocholi, Managing Director of RNIB Enterprises, said: “It’s fantastic that organisations such as Nestlé and Purina are working with us to bring about a significant step-change in how brands can put accessibility at the forefront of design and packaging decisions. The addition of NaviLens onto the Bakers packaging, ensures that blind and partially sighted pet owners can access nutritional information and feeding guidelines – vital information that all pet lovers should be able to access and consider when choosing the right food for their pets.”
NaviLens will be available on Bakers packs from early 2025.

A collaboration between Purina and the University of California, Davis, will advance scientific understanding of urinary conditions in dogs and cats while providing exceptional care for patients experiencing urinary disease.
A Nestlé Purina PetCare grant of nearly $1 million over 5 years will support the School of Veterinary Medicine’s G.V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory (USAL). It will allow companion animal veterinarians to provide free urinary stone analysis results to their patients.
The collaboration holds promise for future innovations in veterinary urology by investigating new diets and supplements to expand stone diagnosis and new devices for managing urinary diseases in companion animals.
“Urinary diseases are common and often recurrent problems in companion animals. The shared goal of the USAL and Purina’s global research teams is to advance the science of urinary tract health in companion animals by investigating the relationship between diet, environmental and patient factors, and urinary tract conditions, including urolithiasis,” said Sheri Smithey, senior vice president, Global PetCare R&D at Purina. “Data obtained through the USAL submission process will be essential to helping us better understand these relationships and expand clinical and research endeavors to improve urinary health in dogs and cats.”
Under the grant agreement, the USAL will provide free analyses and interpretations along with consultations to veterinary practitioners for up to 800 new stone submissions a year. By utilizing data submitted and analyzed by the USAL, researchers hope to gain a better understanding of urolithiasis management and abnormal tissue mineralization.
“Because the risk factors for urinary stone disease are complex and multifactorial, our goal is to better understand urolith formation while helping veterinarians work with their clients to tailor and optimize preventive management strategies,” said USAL Director Dr. Jodi Westropp. She noted that the scope of veterinary urology research also extends to other common conditions such as feline idiopathic cystitis, as well as diagnostics and therapeutics for urinary tract infections in dogs.
UC Davis Veterinary Medicine has long led in urology research and treatment. In 2022, the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) American Board of Veterinary Specialties provisionally recognized the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ACVNU) as veterinary medicine’s newest specialty discipline. Decades in the making, the charge for ACVNU’s establishment was led by Dr. Larry Cowgill, an alumni and professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, along with an organizing committee of leading experts in the field.
In addition, the school has long been a trailblazer in veterinary nutrition. With three board-certified nutritionists, UC Davis leads veterinary academia in nutrition research, clinical care, and training. Its 3-year residency program in nutrition is one of only six in the nation.
“Thanks to this generous grant from Purina, we look forward to building stronger relationships with veterinary practitioners and providing them with evidence-based tools to better manage patients and meet their needs,” said Westropp.

As spooky season approaches, costumes are extremely popular. While turning your pet into a pretty pup-kin might seem fun, PDSA, the vet charity for pets in need, is advising owners to think twice about the impact dressing up will have on their furry family member’s health and happiness.
PDSA Vet Nurse, Gemma Renwick, said: “While we may love to dress up as goblins and ghouls for Halloween, pets don’t share our enthusiasm. Costumes can cause significant discomfort and stress for our furry friends – what may seem like a completely innocent bit of seasonal fun can be detrimental to their health.
1. Costumes can reduce mobility
“Some costumes can be more of a trick than a treat by preventing your pet from walking, grooming, or even going to the bathroom comfortably. Pet clothing is often made from thick materials which may also cause your pet to overheat, as they can't regulate their body temperature as effectively when covered in layers of fabric. Worse yet, there’s a risk of choking on small parts, or injury if the outfit gets tangled or caught on something.
2. Dressing up doesn't come naturally to pets
“Imagine being wrapped up like a mummy when you didn’t ask for it! Dressing up doesn’t come naturally to pets, especially for cats, who can feel particularly distressed when forced into an outfit. Our pets will let us know through how they are feeling with their body language and behaviour. It’s important to consider what they’re trying to tell you and the situation to ensure that your furry friend is happy. If your cat is trying to hide, slinking low to the ground, making unusual vocalizations or even showing signs of aggression, it may be their way of saying that they are uncomfortable. Meanwhile, dogs might exhibit stress through behaviours like lip licking, yawning when they are not tired, or panting when they aren’t warm or exercising. They may become stiff or tense with ears pinned back and a tail tucked between their legs. They may try and look away, or even get away from what you are doing. Ignoring these signs could leave your canine friend resorting to aggression in a last attempt to communicate that they are not comfortable.
3. Costumes can mask communication signals
“Dogs rely heavily on body language to communicate with each other, and a costume can obscure these signals as it hides them from showing their natural behaviours, leading to confusion or even aggressive encounters. If your dog is feeling stressed, it may change how they behave around other pets, potentially leading to misunderstandings or conflicts.
4. Your pet isn’t a party prop
“While fancy dress may be fun for us, it's important to remember that our pets aren’t toys or a Halloween party prop. Dressing them in a way that makes fun of them or puts them in an uncomfortable position is just not a considerate thing to do. Our pets are adorable just as they are, and there are other ways to get them involved this Halloween, such as a snuggling up on the sofa for a spooky movie night together.
When can I dress my pet?
“However, there are times when pet clothing can be beneficial. Though not all pooches need one, a cosy winter coat can help keep a dog warm in cold weather, especially those with thin fur or certain medical conditions. Occasionally, special boots can be used to protect your pup’s paws, especially if they are prone to cuts and scrapes on their pads or are recovering from a paw injury.
“If your pet is happy to wear one, a well-fitted surgical vest can protect healing wounds from excessive licking post-operation. Therapy tops can sometimes be used in addition to other aides to reduce anxiety and stress, while hi-vis jackets can help ensure pets remain visible and safe on dark winter walks.
“While dressing up pets may be tempting, it's crucial to prioritise their comfort, safety, and dignity. If the clothing isn’t serving a necessary purpose, it's best to let your pet enjoy their natural look, free from the constraints of a costume. After all, they’re already your little pumpkin just the way they are!”

TV star to design garden for dogs at Chelsea Flower Show

The RHS and BBC Radio 2 are joining forces with TV gardening celebrity Monty Don to bring a garden for dogs to RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025 to lift people’s spirits and celebrate our deep love of dogs and gardens we share with them.
‘The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden’ will be the first garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show to be designed by Gardeners’ World’s Monty Don, one of Britain’s best loved and best-known gardeners, whose deep affection for dogs is widely known.
The garden is part of the RHS ‘Your Space, Your Story’ initiative, which will champion the individuality of all gardeners. Whether people are passionate about growing their own food or crave a children’s play area, over 2025 the RHS will celebrate how outdoor spaces can bring to life every person’s passion from pet-friendly sanctuaries to small urban havens.
Clare Matterson, RHS Director General, says: “It’s exciting to be working with Radio 2 and Monty Don to create a garden that celebrates the connection between two of the UK’s greatest loves – dogs and gardens. Nothing lifts us like a beautiful garden, and then, for a little bit of extra joy, we’ve added some wagging tails.
“Over 2025 we really want to celebrate how we’re here for all gardeners; dog lovers, families, keen cooks, houseplant fanatics, everyone, and this garden is a great example of how individuals can all bring to life their passions in their outside spaces.”

With the nation’s dog owners wanting beautiful spaces for them and their furry friends, ‘The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden’ will inspire the millions of dog lovers at home to create green havens for them and their pets. Monty wants the garden to be both an exemplar of all the things that dogs love regardless of horticultural fashion and a beautiful space that any dog owner would love.
Monty Don, says: “This is an irresistible opportunity to join with the RHS and Radio 2 to share my love of gardens and dogs at the world’s greatest horticultural event. Along with the superb team headed by Jamie Butterworth we shall be making a garden that is inspired by Longmeadow and my own dogs but above all a celebration of the way that so many of us share our gardens with our canine companions.”
One of the nation’s favourite radio presenters and keen gardener, Jo Whiley, will be championing the garden on Radio 2 - the UK’s most listened to radio station, with a weekly audience of 13.3 million (RAJAR Q2, 2024) - encouraging listeners to choose songs for a special doggy playlist, which will play in a beautiful hipped-roof summer house within ‘The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden’ .

Jo Whiley (credit Jo Whiley).
Jo Whiley, who hosts a show each Monday to Thursday on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds from 7-9pm, says: “This is a dream come true, bringing my passion for gardening and my love of dogs together for this very special garden. We’ll be getting Radio 2 listeners involved in the playlist a little closer to the time so do tune in for more on that next year!”
At the centre of the garden will be a neatly mown lawn, which whilst tended, is essential for canine sprawling, sleeping, rolling, flopping, itching and chasing balls. A large tree will cast shade on the grass to stretch out on a warm afternoon.
The lawn will drift into longer grass planted with ornamental spring flowering bulbs to create more of a tameflower meadow than a wildflower meadow. Brick paths run straight creating vistas - a touch of Longmeadow - with one providing the route through the garden for visitors and another at right angles to this leading to the summerhouse.
To reflect the special place dogs hold in our hearts and our gardens, the paths will be inscribed with the names of dogs belonging to Radio 2 presenters and RHS ambassadors, as well as of course Monty’s beloved dog Ned. As Patron of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where the Garden for Dogs will live on after RHS Chelsea, Her Majesty The Queen’s adopted Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell, will also feature on the path.
Within the ‘The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden’ a sectioned off area will be a place for humans to enjoy a beautiful tapestry of plants, and for dogs to visit only when supervised by their human owners. This space will raise awareness of certain plants that are toxic to dogs and other pets. Here there will be a mixture of planting of familiar yet favourite plants, as well as a distinct theme of balls with lots of alliums and topiary balls of different sizes and kinds.
Garden Designer Monty Don will be creating this, his first RHS Chelsea Flower Garden, with the team at Form Plants, led by Plant Expert and Horticulturist Jamie Butterworth.
After RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the ‘The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden’ will live on just across the River Thames at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for all the rescue dogs and the people who work and volunteer there to enjoy for generations to come.

Award-winning herbal pet care experts Dorwest Herbs bestselling calming supplements Scullcap & Valerian Tablets have been a bestseller for over 60 years - with 1.23 million doses sold during fireworks season in 2023.
With ‘fireworks season’ becoming longer and less predictable, managing fearful pets is more challenging than ever for owners. Dorwest’s Scullcap & Valerian Tablets are proven to calm, from the results of a 2022 trial conducted within a University of Cambridge Department of Veterinary medicine degree and have seen huge growth in sales year on year.
The 2022 trial sought to determine the efficacy of Dorwest’s calming supplements and included 46 participants and their dogs using Scullcap & Valerian Tablets. Results showed 87% of participants perceived less fireworks anxiety symptoms in their dogs after using Dorwest’s Scullcap & Valerian Tablets.
In the 2022 trial, 40 out of 46 owners noted a reduction in anxious behaviours demonstrated by their dogs after exposure to fireworks with supplementation, in comparison with anxious behaviours displayed pre-supplementation with exposure to fireworks. With the majority of participating owners reporting a much-improved change in their dog’s behaviour in response to fireworks and loud noises after using Scullcap & Valerian Tablets.
The 2023 sales of Scullcap & Valerian Tablets show product growth continuing, with online searches for ‘dog anxiety’ and ‘dog fireworks fear’ increasing considerably in the last 5 years.
Jo Boughton-White, Manager Director comments: “Scullcap & Valerian Tablets are proven to really calm and we’re so happy to provide a natural and effective solution that our customers can rely on.
“Whether it’s one month or one day before bonfire night, Dorwest can help. The 2022 trial proved how calming supplements can really make a difference in supporting anxious behaviours – but it’s important to start preparation as early as possible.”

Rising star Clara shines light on muzzled dogs
Clara Hewson, founder of The Muzzle Movement, was crowned the first winner of the PetQuip Rising Star Award. Here she explains how she has endeavoured to change people’s misconceptions surrounding muzzled dogs.

Clara Hewson, founder of The Muzzle Movement, was crowned the first winner of the PetQuip Rising Star Award. Here she explains how she has endeavoured to change people’s misconceptions surrounding muzzled dogs.
What prompted you to launch The Muzzle Movement?
I worked as a senior training and behaviour advisor in the UK’s largest dog rescue, alongside some of their most challenging cases. I felt frustrated at the lack of appropriate muzzles for the dogs in our care. I also had adopted a Pointer called Tolly who needed to be muzzled due to worries around strangers. It was difficult to experience first-hand the looks and comments from members of the public. I started an Instagram page called ‘The Muzzle Movement’ where I shared informative posts and generally advocated for safe muzzle usage. I shared my ideas of what would make the perfect muzzle and realised I wasn’t the only person looking for a solution. I decided to run a Kickstarter campaign with just an idea – and raised £46,000 in just 30 days! Sadly, Tolly was diagnosed with an inoperable spinal tumour, so he was never able to try one of the muzzles I designed for him.
How did you set about changing the public’s misconceptions surrounding muzzled dogs?
We have always prioritised growing and nurturing a muzzle-positive community on social media – this has been amazing for changing the public perception of muzzles and helping to spread the message far and wide. We have also attended 10 events, from Crufts and DogFest, to several professional events and conferences, in an attempt to spread awareness. We have a member of staff whose job is education and engagement, and she has written blogs and magazine articles, and is currently working on a comprehensive muzzle training course. We also created a Muzzle Support Pack which contains lots of useful information about all different kinds of muzzles, the importance of good fit, tips for measuring your dog, as well as links to further information online. This is available free of charge for dog professionals to download.
Was it easy to create a new design for muzzles? In some ways, yes. We have a pretty unique perspective in terms of designing and manufacturing a product, as we have so much experience working with dogs. Most of the team are trainers and behaviourists and we have 70+ years combined experience in rescue so we know what we want from a muzzle. We have learned something from designing and making every size, so we truly believe we get better every time we release a new muzzle.
What’s been the reaction to your range of muzzles? Overwhelmingly positive! We have such wonderful feedback from our amazing customers, and it keeps us driving forwards. I recently spoke at BVA Live, a veterinary conference, and we had an overwhelmingly positive and excited response from vets and nurses. We also have a lot of customers who are dog professionals, from trainers and behaviourists, to groomers, physiotherapists and rescues, who love our product as well as our message and stance as a force-free company. It's fantastic to go to in-person events and have people come to the stall to chat, feel the muzzles, ask questions and shop. We have also worked hard over the last year to keep improving.

Do you sell your products mainly through your website?
Our business is predominantly online, with over 90% of our sales generated via our website, and 10% of sales coming from in-person events and fitting days we host at our unit twice monthly. Our website helps us to access people from all around the globe, with only 50% of sales generated from within the UK, so without our website we would lose access to supporting dogs worldwide. We are currently gearing up to offer wholesale/trade options which is exciting, and also challenging to navigate because we need to ensure our stockists uphold the same ethics and core values.
Are you satisfied with the rate of growth of your business?
We never expected to grow at the rate we have. We knew we were on to a good thing and we all genuinely believe whole-heartedly in our products and company so we have always been confident that would grow into an established business. Did we expect to become as big as we have, in just two years? Absolutely not! Sales and followers were steadily increasing month on month, and then the XL Bully ban came into place in the UK and it exploded. We have invested every penny back into the business and have released two further sizes, moved to a unit which better accommodates us and grown to a team of 12. This year has been wild and we have genuinely seen a shift in public attitude towards muzzles.

How did you feel when you won two PetQuip Awards?
I was completely overwhelmed. We have never won an award before, and it was so affirming to know there are people recognising what we are doing. The ability to showcase our brand to a room full of professionals was an amazing feeling, and the feedback we received was lovely. I think when you are running on a treadmill of the daily grind it’s easy to forget about the wider impact we are having. It was nice to step outside of our crazy bubble for an evening and just revel in everything we have been able to achieve so far.

Jollyes, the award-winning nationwide pet superstore, has introduced a raft of new support measures for new talent and longstanding colleagues as it looks to be one of retail’s best employers.
The discount retailer, which is now trading from over 100 stores across the UK with over 1,200 employees, is also launching an innovative programme called ‘fur-st impressions’ that lets those looking for their dream job working with animals to bring their pet with them to their interview.
Jollyes people are passionate about pets – in fact, a whopping 96 per cent of colleagues in the business are pet owners themselves.
The passion and expertise this brings is part of the secret behind Jollyes’ reputation for service – a key building block of Jollyes’ plans as it prepares to more than double its retail pawprint to 250 stores over the next five years.
After a pilot, Jollyes believes making pets part of the interview experience eases the tension of job interviews and creates a more comfortable, authentic environment for both the interviewer and the candidate.
Frank Liddy, Director of the Belfast Mindfulness Centre, was supportive of the Fur-st Impressions initiative. He said: “Bringing your pet to an interview request showcases your authenticity, breaks the ice, and highlights your ability to nurture relationships – qualities that can translate into a warm, collaborative work environment.”
Jollyes has also launched a dedicated recruitment and careers website, which makes its application process and business benefits more transparent for applicants.
Job interviews can be a daunting prospect, and Jollyes wants to give potential new hires the best chance to succeed. That’s why its new recruitment portal shows applicants what to expect in the interview process, as well as a steer on the types of questions they can expect.
Job applications have skyrocketed to over 4,500 in its first few weeks following the pilot launch of this new portal – the same level received in the previous three years.
New perks have also been introduced for current Jollyes colleagues, including a ‘career paws’ scheme, which will run across the business.
Under the scheme colleagues will be entitled to take a career sabbatical of up to six months, while having an equivalent role within Jollyes retained for them to take up upon their return.
Career paws is the latest in a range of benefits for employees - and Jollyes is constantly looking at new ways to attract the talent it needs to grow at pace.
Other Jollyes benefits include:
- Birthday leave – a day off on a colleague’s special day
- A ‘top dog’ rewards scheme, which allows employees to nominate colleagues they believe deserve a little recognition. Winners receive a ‘Cat Nap Day’ of additional leave on Jollyes, alongside a badge and certificate.
- A ‘pet-eternity’ day for colleagues getting a new pet in the family
- Wedding / civil partnership – a week off for all colleagues on full pay when they get married
- Enhanced paternity leave – two weeks of full pay for new parents
- Enhanced maternity leave – Jollyes parents can now get full pay for six weeks for maternity leave
- A gift when colleagues have a baby, including through fostering or adoption
- An enhanced 20 per cent discount off all Jollyes services
- A discount for a partner or friend - after three months working at Jollyes, colleagues can nominate a second person to get an in-store discount
- Lifetime discount – after 20 years’ service a colleague will qualify for a discount for life
- New long service award badges for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years’ service – Jollyes has some of the most loyal colleagues in retail with a dozen colleagues on the payroll for over 25 years.
These are all in addition to a broader range of benefits colleagues enjoy, including big discounts with a number of partner retailers.
For the first time, Jollyes was named as one of The Sunday Times’ best big companies to work in 2024.
Jollyes people director Claire Goldenberg said: “Our engaging and passionate colleagues are what sets Jollyes apart as they support pet parents in their communities who value their expertise and care.
“That’s why creating the right support for our people, from their very first interview and through their careers here at Jollyes, is so important to our ambitious growth.
“Whether it’s having your four-legged friend by your side to calm your nerves during the interview or having the opportunity to take the career break you’ve always dreamed of, we aspire for Jollyes to be a place where colleagues are able to build a long and rewarding retail career.
“It’s a hugely exciting time for our business, with new investment which will see our store estate and headcount more than double in the next five years.
“But our success rests on recruiting and retaining the very best people for dream jobs working with animals and giving a helping hand to those that love them.
“That’s why we are always working on new ways we can make a career at Jollyes one of the first to consider when building a retail career.”
Jollyes is now trading from 106 stores across the UK, and will open an additional three stores before the end of 2024 in East Kilbride, Leyland and Cardiff. It recently was named UK Multiple Retailer of the Year at the PetQuip Awards 2024.
