Pet food manufacturers hit back at criticism

Pet food manufacturers have hit back at claims that dog food labels too hard to read for half of Brits. Responding to the criticism Michael Bellingham, Chief Executive of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association, said: “Our advice to owners is to choose a 'complete' pet food appropriate for their pet's life stage and life style while suiting the pet owner's budget.”

Pet food manufacturers have hit back at claims that dog food labels too hard to read for half of Brits.

New research carried out by Paws.com revealed that millions of Brits are becoming increasingly confused by food labels and are unsure as to what is in the food they are feeding their dogs.

But Michael Bellingham, Chief Executive of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association, has responded to the findings.

He said: “We recognise that pet food labelling isn't as pet owner friendly as we would like it to be; sometimes the terminology can be confusing; however we believe that a traffic light system on pet food labels does not work as it overly simplifies what are currently complex labelling regulations.

“Pet food labelling falls under EU legislation for all animal feed, meaning that the way information is listed on-pack is not always understandable for pet owners, although well understood by farmers. The good news is that most pet food manufacturers provide full product information on company websites and have dedicated customer care lines to provide further support and advice to pet owners.

“The most important piece of information on a pet food label for an owner to understand is the term 'complete'. This is a legal definition and any product labelled as 'complete' must by law provide all the nutrients a pet needs for healthy bodily function.

“In order to formulate a 'complete' product, members of the PFMA formulate their diets in line with FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. These guidelines detail the nutritional needs of cats and dogs at the varying life stages from growth through to senior.

“Our advice to owners is to choose a 'complete' pet food appropriate for their pet's life stage and life style while suiting the pet owner's budget.”

Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd recalls products over health risk

Welsh firm Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling four batches of frozen raw pet food – Frozen Raw Beef, Chicken, Lamb, and Chicken & Tripe Pet Food – because Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals, has been found in the products.

Welsh firm Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling four batches of frozen raw pet food – Frozen Raw Beef, Chicken, Lamb, and Chicken & Tripe Pet Food – because Listeria monocytogenes has been found in the products.

In a risk statement issued on its website the Food Standards Agency said: "Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.

"In humans, symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

Aberystwyth-based Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling the above products from their customers. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

The FSA has issued the following advice to consumers: "If you have bought any of the above products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with animal faeces. Raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces."

Call for urgent review of animal activities licensing

An investigation into the new Animal Activities Licensing system in England has revealed it has done little to improve animal welfare but is tying up businesses in unnecessary red tape, taking up precious time that could be used to look after animals. That's the view of OATA and REPTA, who are now asking DEFRA for an urgent review of the system...

An investigation into the new Animal Activities Licensing system in England has revealed it has done little to improve animal welfare but is tying up businesses in unnecessary red tape, taking up precious time that could be used to look after animals.

The lack of training for inspectors, who have been given three years to become suitably qualified, means businesses face inexperience and uncertainty from those employed to implement the complex new system.

Some local authorities are also charging exorbitant fees to issue licences for longer than a year, despite clear guidance to the contrary.

OATA & REPTA, who issued a Freedom of Information request to more than 300 English local authorities to examine implementation of the new inspection and licensing regime for businesses selling animals as pets, are now asking Defra for an urgent review of the system.

The two trade associations are also calling for a number of changes to be made to the Selling Animals as Pets guidance, which now encompasses a wider range of businesses, from pet shops to wholesalers, consolidators of fish and breeders of animals other than dogs and cats.

“We always expected a bedding-in period for such a complex new regime but there are just too many substantial flaws, which in some cases are dangerous to animal health, for this to continue without an urgent review by Defra,” said OATA Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee (pictured).

“The higher standards and star rating system are not driving up animal welfare because they are too onerous or frankly unachievable for businesses to bother with them. We estimate that across all pets in England the cost of meeting higher standards exceeds £350,000. Coupled with the fact that some councils are charging more than £1,000 for a 3 year licence then it’s all just too burdensome and expensive for businesses to shoulder.”

REPTA’s Chris Newman says he is particularly concerned by some elements within the Reptile schedule that could lead to suffering or even the death of some animals if they are followed to the letter. And he believes the reptile sector has been very hard hit with high costs to meet new licence requirements.

“Some of the guidance requirements fail to take into account that species within a taxa group can vary tremendously so a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t reflect good animal husbandry and in some cases is actually dangerous to their health. If shops followed the guidance to the letter they could end up killing some animals.

“We estimate the cost to the reptile sector alone could be more than £3 million. That’s a very far cry from the £230,000 Defra’s Impact Assessment predicted for businesses across the whole pet industry and illustrates just how woefully inadequate the preparation for this new regime has been.”

The top six recommendations made in the review are:

  1. Inspections from October 2019 should only be undertaken by inspectors who have undergone the required training. Any costs for using external consultants should be borne by the local authorities
  2. Reduce the requirements for written records, including the sales register.
  3. Review enclosure sizes and water depth requirements to ensure they are practical, proportionate and fit for purpose and do not risk animal welfare.
  4. Introduce meaningful assessments that enable inspectors to assess animal welfare when they visit a business selling animals as pets.
  5. Review and simplify the star rating system and higher standards where they do not provide additional welfare benefits or are not fit for purpose.
  6. Ensure consistent fee setting across local authorities and remind them not to set different fees dependent on length of licence.

Pioneering Pawfect Foods set to hit the UK pet market

This Autumn sees all-natural treats pioneer Pawfect Foods make its home market debut at PATS Telford after an ‘above all expectations’ soft launch in Europe. Pet Trade Xtra caught up with Pawfect Foods founder Prash Patwardhan to see what UK pet owners could expect from this new and innovative brand.

What is your background?

My marketing background is unashamedly corporate/‘blue chip,’ having worked across an array of fast-moving sectors from brewing and spirits to communication networks and personnel sourcing.

Some people can be a tad evasive/apologetic about their corporate past and yet for me it provided the perfect setting to hone my skills, since access to such significant resources and brand heritage (after all these brands didn’t get big by luck) meant my training and career journey was both thorough and uncompromising, providing me with the very best possible start in life.

Tell us how and why you got into the pet treat market.

That said for all the positives that surround a blue chip career, there’s always going to be a small voice at the back of your head encouraging you to step out of the shadows and be solely in charge of your own destiny, simply because you should, quite rightly believe in yourself and your ability.

In the human sphere the move to clean deck/healthier living/guilt free food and drink has been nothing short of spectacular as an increasingly health-conscious/self-aware social media savvy society comes to terms with the cause and effect of a good diet.

As a proud dog owner I was only too aware that too many dogs were living an unhealthy existence simply on account of ill-informed owners or an outdated pet food industry that continues to put owner convenience over taste and nutritional vitality.

Thankfully the pet food has taken significant strides to put its house in order: greater ingredient transparency, removal of ill-serving filler/artificial nasties and an increasingly differentiated offer that looks at breeds, life stages and lifestyles and yet, when it comes to pet ‘snacks’ the word ‘treat’ still seems to provide a green light for all manner of ill-advised ingredients (excessive salt, sugar, fillers, second-rate ingredients) to be employed.

I wanted to create treats devoid of ‘pointless’ passenger ingredients that once and for all burst the myth that dog treats can’t simultaneously be tasty and ‘health friendly.’

What’s special about your products?

In a nutshell, ‘simplicity of thought.’  At the kernel of our thought process is the common-sense belief that dogs aren’t single-track carnivores, since a more all-encompassing outlook is required (fruit, veg and dairy…) to meet secure one’s daily nutrient/mineral/vitamin fix.

A second factor is our untethered access to respected vet/dog nutritionist, Dr Veneta Korhuhrova who has been central to our range’s depth & nutritional make-up.

Thirdly is the breadth of our ingredient scouting network, as a British company with an Indian manufacturing hub we have strong procurement links that stretch far and wide.  We may be young, fledgling player but in other senses we’re a global enterprise scouring high and low for best- in-class/human grade ingredients from some of the most unspoilt food producing regions on the planet – e.g. our Himalayan cheese sticks comes courtesy of anti-biotic free herds traversing pesticide-free pastures.

We are also happy to adhere to the old ways Vs excessive mechanisation to secure our goals because rushing isn’t always the answer - e.g. our Himalayan Cheese Sticks are smoked for 28 days the old-fashioned way.

It’s also worth mentioning that all our ingredients are ethically and sustainably sourced.

The pet treat market is very crowded, how will you make your products stand out from the rest?

For all reasons already outlined plus the depth of our offer as we work tirelessly to become category experts/pioneers.

It’s worth noting that Pawfect Foods is a brand that has ambitions that extends far beyond this island’s borders with soft market launches in Netherlands, Belgium, Spain Poland & Luxembourg, (and 5 more European markets in the offing).  It’s also worth pointing out that Prash’s specialist expertise includes instigating countless brand launches throughout the world, a skillset that demands an attentive, almost meticulous appreciation of unique market mechanics.

Pawfect is also aligned with leading edge support agencies like Communications expert Publicis and disruptor brand specialist Purple Pilchard.

In broader terms we’re a common sense brand where every ingredient has to earn its keep, so if it brings nothing to the party it’s out!  Some of our product ranges are standalone treats, (Nature’s Munch and Himalayan Cheese Treats) whilst others are helpful supplements to address unwelcome ailments (Doggy’s Cuppa supports tackles everything from sleep deprivation, anxiety and poor digestion to flatulence, or add extra nutritional balance/gravitas, (Dr Veneta’s Pawfect Kitchen) which is a meticulously balanced side mix that supports a high protein raw meat diet

5) How do you come up with the different recipes?

There was substantial research instigated before we set out (my blue chip background demands detailed sector analysis) and we work closely with respected nutritionists.

6) Where are the treats made?

For the most part India in our state-of-the-art production facility which is HACCP, ISO-22000-2018 certified and BRC credited.

Do you think the UK pet owner is getting more discerning when it comes to giving their animal’s treats and food?

Yes because as mentioned already pet food cycles mirror what’s happening in the human arena and thankfully the health conscious agenda is gaining real traction.

How many products will you be launching at PATS Telford?

Four Sub-ranges consisting of 22 products, so quite a substantial declaration of intent.

Why have you chosen PATS as your official UK launch?

The Oscars of the UK pet industry and so the only sensible starting point for our UK adventure which already includes a short-listing at this year’s prestigious PetQuip awards.

Supreme Petfoods Marketing Manager, Claire Hamblion, says: “We wanted to reward retailers for all their fantastic support – from nominating us for awards as their favourite small pet product supplier, to helping Naturals become such a success. Helping to build bigger baskets is key to success in the pet trade. This offer should help them drive sales and loyalty in their customer base and reinforce the benefits of shopping with a specialist.”

The Innocent Pet Care Company’s new air-dried food offers an innovative addition to the complete dog food market. Forming a new category of food (it isn’t a kibble, wet or frozen), the air-dried food is made in Yorkshire with 70% British lamb or wild salmon.

Founder Chloe Heaton said: “Customers love the quality of our treats and have been asking us to make a complete food for years. Whilst keeping our small company’s big values at the forefront of development, we have worked with leading nutritionists to create a unique and exceptional complete meal.”

The air-dried dog food is made using ethically sourced, quality British ingredients combined with the company’s bespoke, gentle drying expertise.  The result is a semi-moist, great tasting, healthy and nutritious feast.

The handmade production method means with minimum processing and no high temperatures, the nutrients and flavours of the ingredients are maintained.  The food can be stored in an ambient environment, and once opened the pack lasts for up to 4 months making it very convenient.  As it has not been cooked, it is proving to be a popular choice for those tempted by raw feeding but who need a more convenient solution.

Chloe added: “Our food not only offers total convenience as an everyday food, but it is ideal for raw feeders to have on standby for those days when they’ve forgotten to take meat out of the freezer, or they’re going away for a holiday.”

Committed to reducing their environmental impact, the packaging for the food is 100% recyclable.  It is available in 3kg packs and comes in 2 flavours (Lamb Casserole and Wild Salmon Fishcakes), with an RRP of £40.

Measuring water quality in line with DEFRA guidelines

With DEFRA releasing new guidelines on how to care for fish in stores, Simon Strode, Key Account Manager at Tetra UK reveals the key updates you need to be aware of...

With DEFRA releasing new guidelines on how to care for fish in stores, Simon Strode, Key Account Manager at Tetra UK reveals the key updates you need to be aware of.

With over 4,000 species of fish in trade, their welfare needs to be ensured through a range of practises, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has recently released updated guidance notes advising retailers on the best conditions for selling animals as pets1.

One important area to receive attention is the specifics of water testing in stores. As experts in fishkeeping, we understand the need for regular testing as a way of establishing any harmful substances, such as ammonia and nitrite in the water, which may lead to stress or disease in fish, but there has been confusion over how often and to what extent retailers need to test these.

What you need to know

As outlined in DEFRA’s guidelines, centralised systems and 10% of individually filtered aquariums or vats must be tested weekly with standards complying with those outlined in the table below. What’s more, all tests must be taken from stocked aquariums with results recorded and any action taken to remedy water parameters if results fall outside of the recommended guidelines. To ensure this happens on a regular basis rather than ad-hoc, it is advisable to set up a process which involves all members of your team. This will allow them to become confident with this aspect of maintenance when it comes to speaking with your consumers because they are familiar with the reasons behind water testing.

Source: Water quality minimum standards. The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations November 2018: Guidance notes for conditions for selling animals as pets

According to DEFRA, these guidelines need to be adhered to in order to ensure you don’t lose your pet shop license, however there are additional measures you can introduce to allow yourself to be awarded with the higher standard of fish care. This includes testing aquarium waters three times a week as a minimum and keeping all results documented.

The benefits to retailers

Not only will these guidelines ensure all your fish are healthy for sale, minimising loss from disease or stress, but it’s also a great way to ensure staff are confident when it comes to talking to consumers about the ease of fishkeeping and the best products available to test water quality parameters. This will allow you to boost sales through additional purchases while ensuring that your fishkeepers have a successful experience. What’s more, by adhering to the higher standards of fish welfare you will not only be supporting the future of the trade, by helping to safeguard against scrutiny and ensuring fish welfare at all times, but you can also communicate this in store allowing you to build trust with fishkeepers and position yourself as an expert.

MEASURE WATER QUALITY WITH EASE

Measuring and recording water quality is an easy process with Tetra’s 6in1 strips which tests waters reliably in only 60 seconds, capturing key parameters including pH, carbonate hardness (KH), general hardness (GH), Nitrite (NO2-), Nitrate (NO3-) and chlorine (Cl2). These should be used together with Tetra’s Ammonia test kit which is another key water parameter which needs to be monitored. The 6in1 strips can be used in conjunction with Tetra’s FREE Aquatics App which analyses results for you while offering recommendations on next steps should any action be required as well as recording results digitally.

A courageous Police Dog, who was brutally slashed eight times while protecting his handler from an armed assailant, has been awarded a Medal for bravery from leading vet charity, PDSA.

Police Dog (PD) Bacca, who is now retired from West Mercia Police, sustained multiple injuries from the attacker, who was armed with a 10 inch knife.  His handler, retired Police Constable (PC) Mike Davey, was also injured in the incident.

PD Bacca was presented with his PDSA Gold Medal* – the animal equivalent of the George Cross – by the leading vet charity at a ceremony at Birmingham Repertory Theatre today (26 July 2019).

Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director of Veterinary Services, Richard Hooker, said: “Bacca’s unstinting devotion to duty and determination to protect his handler, despite sustaining serious injuries, makes him a worthy recipient of the PDSA Gold Medal.

“The PDSA Animal Awards programme seeks to raise the status of animals in society and honour the incredible contribution they make to our lives. Bacca’s heroics are an extraordinary example of this and his bravery deserves the highest possible recognition.

“We are also thrilled that the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act, widely known as Finn’s Law, after a fellow PDSA Gold Medal recipient, recently came into force. This gives greater protection to service animals like Bacca, who are deliberately attacked or injured in the line of duty.”

Bacca’s story

In the early hours of Wednesday 6 June 2018, West Mercia Police received reports of a man smashing shop windows and acting in a violent, unpredictable manner, in Bromyard High Street.

PC Mike Davey and PD Bacca arrived on the scene minutes later, along with a first response unit.

On seeing the Police arrive, the assailant began wielding a large knife. Officers noted that he appeared extremely distressed. He refused to engage with PC Davey and it was the Officer’s opinion that the man was intent on inflicting serious harm to anyone in his path. Though late at night, there were several members of the public close by.

The man then started harm himself with the knife. PC Davey released PD Bacca, in an attempt to disarm him. He immediately attacked PD Bacca with the knife, slashing and hacking at his head. Officers used Parva spray to incapacitate the suspect but it had no effect and he continued his attack.

A violent struggle ensued in which both PC Davey and PD Bacca received several knife wounds.

Following the skirmish, the man managed to break free and run down a nearby alleyway. PC Davey and PD Bacca gave chase and PD Bacca wrestled him to the ground, incurring further stab wounds in the process. Again, the man freed himself but PD Bacca caught him and brought him to the ground again. PD Bacca detained him until PC Davey successfully disarmed and handcuffed him.

PD Bacca sustained a number of wounds to his head and neck, which required emergency veterinary treatment including stitches following the incident.  PC Davey also required medical attention to a deep wound on his hand.

Without question, the courageous and professional actions of PD Bacca make him a worthy recipient of the PDSA Gold Medal.

Award reaction

Discussing the PDSA Gold Medal presentation, Mike Davey, said:  “Seeing Bacca recognised with such a prestigious award is truly fantastic. A year on from the incident and I am still in awe of his actions that night. He was attacked, repeatedly, and seriously injured, yet he continued to do his job.  To me it highlights what a truly remarkable Police Dog he was throughout his career.

“He was there when I needed him – as he was for the eight years we worked together, and still is now in retirement – and I have no doubt that he saved my life that night.”

Geoff Wessell, Assistant Chief Constable of West Mercia Police, said: “I am honoured to attend this event alongside PC Davey and PD Bacca to witness them receiving such a prestigious award. It’s something the entire Dog Section within West Mercia Police is intensely proud of. Congratulations to PD Bacca for being awarded the PDSA Gold Medal – an award he so richly deserves. Our police dogs, although trained extensively to deal with all sorts of incidents, put their own safety on the line daily to protect the entire community.

“Bacca, although extensively injured in the incident, returned to the scene to deal with the perpetrator and protect his handler from further injury. My thanks also go to the PDSA; the charity does so much to care for the sick and injured animals of people who struggle with the cost of veterinary bills, and their work in recognising the heroic actions of serving animals through its Animal Awards Programme is truly inspirational.

“With organisations such as this and the recent implementation of Finn’s Law, our serving animals are receiving more and more recognition for the sacrifice they make in protecting all of us. It is only right that we too protect these animals by bringing those to justice who can cause significant harm to them. On behalf of the force, thank you PDSA and thank you to Bacca and Mike.”

Instituted in 2002, the PDSA Gold Medal is awarded to civilian animals for life-saving bravery and exceptional devotion to duty. The Medal is now widely recognised as the animals’ George Cross. Bacca will become the 29th recipient of the PDSA Gold Medal, all of whom have been dogs. For more information about the previous recipients, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/Medals

PDSA’s Animal Awards Programme was instituted in 1943 by the charity’s founder, Maria Dickin. She believed that, if animals were recognised for their heroic actions, it would help to raise their status in society, ensuring they are better treated. The charity continues this legacy today with the world’s leading Animal Awards Programme.

PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, providing free and reduced-cost veterinary care to the pets of people in financial need. The charity strives to improve the wellbeing of all pets’ lives through providing preventive care, educating pet owners and treating pets when they become sick or injured. Today, PDSA treats around 470,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable pets a year, through our nationwide network of 48 Pet Hospitals. For more information about the charity visit www.pdsa.org.uk.

Trinny was left in shock, with deep lacerations, horrific puncture wounds to her chest. She also suffered a shoulder injury so bad she was in danger of losing her front leg. She was treated at Manchester PDSA Pet hospital, where she needed multiple operations to mend her wounds.

Brave Trinny received intensive care from PDSA vet nurses, including antibiotics to treat the weeping wounds, pain-relief and drip therapy. At first, she didn’t want to eat, so had to be hand fed to help her recovery. Incredibly, after months of rehabilitation, she defied the odds, pulled through, and has made a full recovery. Her owners, Julie Keeling and Mark Aspray, have put her forward for the PDSA Pet Survivor awards to recognise her incredible bravery.

Meanwhile, three-year-old cat Loopie lost at least one of his nine lives after being hit by a car. He was rushed to the out-of-hours team based at Sheffield PDSA Pet Hospital, and was in such a critical condition that owner James Rowney was warned to prepare for the worst. Loopie had severe head injuries, his jaw had multiple fractures and the skin was ripped away from his lower jaw. Not only did Loopie’s jaw have to be fixed with wire (and a feeding tube fitted as he couldn’t eat by himself), but he needed surgery to re-attach the ripped skin.

After 12 days of intensive care from the vet team, he was eventually well enough to go home, and went on to make a full recovery. Loopie is being entered into Pet Survivor by his owner James, who wants to thank the team at Sheffield for saving the life of his friend.

Previous Pet Survivor winners

Last year’s winner, Dexter, was crowned PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year 2018 after being shot through the mouth in a deliberate airgun attack. Surviving this shocking act of cruelty was a miracle in itself, but he was also left with a fractured jaw and a hole in the roof of his mouth, requiring months of treatment and recovery. Dexter was selected by a panel of judges to go through to a final public vote against three other pets, and was announced as the winner in December 2018.

PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan said: “Dexter received the coveted title of Pet Survivor to recognise his incredible survival spirit, his owners’ dedication, and the skill and expertise of all the vets and vet nurses who helped to save his life. We’d like to hear from anyone whose pet has an extraordinary story of survival against all odds, or who has cheated death by a whisker.”

The winner of PDSA Pet Survivor 2019 will be decided by a public vote later in the year. They will receive a trophy, plus a luxury pet hamper worth £200, provided by this year’s sponsor Petsurance from PDSA.

Other previous winners include Darcy, a working Cocker Spaniel from Dundee, who fell down a 60ft dam, leaving her with a fractured pelvis, two broken legs and multiple other injuries. She won the award in 2016 after going through months of rehabilitation before she was able to fully recover. In 2015, the award was won by Staffie Ziggy, who miraculously survived being shot in the head with a crossbow.

The awards are open to any pet treated by a vet in the UK for a life-threatening illness or injury between 1 August 2018 and 31 August 2019. Pet owners wishing to nominate their pet can enter online at www.pdsa.org.uk/petsurvivor. The closing date is Sunday 8 September 2019.

Help owners to keep canines cool this summer

A quarter of pet owners want to know how to better look after their dogs in the sun. To help, Stuart Simons, FURminator’s expert groomer, has shared his top five tips on how you can support owners as they look to keep their canine companions cool...

Summer has officially landed. But while we frantically grab our shades and towels to go bask in the sun, it’s important that your customers understand how best to keep their four-legged friends safe under the rays.

In fact, 25% of pet owners want to know how to better look after their dogs in the sun. To help, Stuart Simons, FURminator’s expert groomer, has shared his top five tips on how you can support owners as they look to keep their canine companions cool.

Slap on the sun cream: Encourage your customers to speak to their vets about sun cream for pooches, especially if they have light skin pigment or short hair, as this will make them more prone to sun burn. Advise that they also pay special attention to the tips of their ears and the top of their nose.

Look for shade: Fair haired dogs are at a greater risk of getting sunburned so they should be kept in the shade where possible. If left alone outside, dogs need somewhere away from the sun to rest – remind your customers to find a spot which won’t find itself out of the shade when the sun moves throughout the day.

Keep walkies for the evening: Recommend that your customers keep walks to a minimum during the hottest part of the day and avoid pavements. Dogs perspire through their foot pads so the longer they are standing on a hot floor, the less quickly they can cool down. Dogs also pant to try and cool themselves down. For Brachycephalic breeds, which have a broad head with a short muzzle, they tend to retain more heat as their cooling system isn’t as effective as dogs with a longer nose and so owners need to be extra careful when it comes to walking them in the heat.

Pop them in the tub: Pets will be sweatier from a day or two in the sun causing them to get a little whiffy, especially if they are a shorter haired breed. FURminator’s range of shampoos and conditioners offer a unique blend of the finest ingredients, and are free from parabens and artificial colours, giving dogs a more natural clean and leaving them smelling paw-fect!

Drink up: Highlight any travel bowls you stock, which owners can use on-the-go so they are always prepared with a nice cold supply of water when their dog needs it the most.

Encourage your customers to seek veterinary advice immediately if their dog appears to be excessively panting, has particularly red eyes or gums, feels weak or collapses. If someone comes into your store and their dog looks unwell you can also use a cool wet towel or ice pack to bring their temperature down.
For more information about taking care of dogs this summer, depending on their coat, check out Stuart’s recommendations below.

Wool Coats (Bichon, Poodle etc) – Fully coated dogs need to be brushed out so that the skin can breathe. Owners can apply a little sun cream on their dog’s nose but it must be pet safe and vet recommended. If the dog’s coat is shaved off very short, owners should check the skin pigment and apply doggy sunscreen if recommended by a vet.

Double coats (German Shepherds, Akita etc) – It’s advised that dogs with double coats should have a regular grooming schedule, as they aren’t necessarily bred for a hot climate and may need help to drop their excess undercoat. A good rake and brush out with a FURminator slicker will help them to release this undercoat.

Combination Coat (Cocker Spaniels and Shih-Tzu’s) – Owners should ensure these pooches are thoroughly brushed through and that their coat isn’t knotted or matted so that they can regulate their temperature properly.

Short Coats (Pugs, Labradors and Boston Terriers etc) – To help short haired dogs stay cool in the heat they need their undercoat fully raked out using a FURminator.

Bald (Chinese Crested) – For dogs with no hair, it is essential that a sun cream is used, so owners are advised to seek veterinary guidance before enjoying the sun to keep them safe and happy.

Plans to replace popular pet shop with cafe

A Norfolk pet shop, set to close down in September, could be replaced by a cafe if planning permission for change of use is granted...

A Norfolk pet shop, set to close down in September, could be replaced by a cafe if planning permission for change of use is granted.

News that Belton Pet and Hardware in a pretty village near Great Yarmouth was met with a wave of disappointment from local residents.

Now a planning application has been submitted to Great Yarmouth Borough Council to change the use of the premises to cafe.

The applicant is named as Clint Rice, while mother and daughter Jacqueline and Laura Lovejoy are planning to run the business.

Laura Lovejoy, who plans to run the cafe with her mum Jacqueline, said: "Belton has been a huge part of my family's life for many years.

"When the opportunity to take over the shop came up we wanted to find a way to give back to the village.

"We knew that Belton Pet and Hardware is a hub for the community but due to difficult market conditions and the current owner retiring, it wasn't viable to carry on.

"We therefore decided that opening a cafe/tea room would be a fantastic way to bring the community together."

Pet retail assistants seek field sales roles

Pet Trade recruitment expert Lynda Ward of Pet Trade Solutions is reporting an increase in pet retail assistants seeking field sales roles...

Pet Trade recruitment expert Lynda Ward of Pet Trade Solutions is reporting an increase in pet retail assistants seeking field sales roles.

Lynda said: “It’s perhaps not surprising that pet shop owners and assistants are often attracted to a career ‘on the road’, given their understandable perception of the perks -such as provision of a quality car, expenses and freedom from the shackles of a static base – but there are hidden responsibilities and potential downsides too that should be thought through.

"Key amongst the considerations must be to understand that selling to consumers is not quite the same as selling to business buyers, who not only need to know the features and benefits and end price but also margins, promotions and support plus ordering delivery and payment terms against the competition.  It may sound simple but not everyone is comfortable with the switch to B2B (business to business) sales and consequent KPIs (key performance indicators) and targets.

"Another major concern is the amount of driving and inherent loneliness of the job – there’s nothing worse than a long day’s driving in frustrating traffic coupled with

several BNAs (buyer not available) and NTTs (not today thanks) calls – and whilst being part of a team helps counter this to an extent you are still basically out there alone.”

Lynda added: “The above are just two potential pitfalls that people can fall into. However I am proud to say that over the years I’ve been able to identify and introduce to enlightened employers a number people who I felt had the necessary tenacity and transferable skills to make that jump … and are now in senior roles in the pet industry with a highly successful career and job satisfaction.”

Lynda is always happy to personally advise on any aspects of recruitment and marketing strategy and can be contacted on 07946 743784 or at lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com

Nutriment is leader of the pack on ‘All About Dog Food’ supersite

Nutriment, an innovator in the formulation and production of raw pet food, is proud to be ranked as the highest rated dog food – across all categories – on the UK’s number one dog food advice and rating website, All About Dog Food.

Established in 2011, All About Dog Food’s creator, David Jackson, intended to create a one-stop- shop platform for dog owners who want to know more about their dog’s food. It is completely independent and provides reviews, tips, advice, information and more to its 90,000-a-month visitors. Following a career in canine nutrition, David’s primary objective is to ensure that dog owners across the country are able to make the most informed decision when it comes to the food they give their dogs.

Nutriment’s core product range – with adult, puppy and senior varieties – is the only dog food which has been awarded the maximum nutritional rating of 100%. The nutritional rating represents how beneficial the food is expected to be for the majority of dogs. Foods and ingredients are scored according to a number of criteria, including bio-appropriateness, quality and bio-availability of nutrients, quantity of ingredients or class of ingredients, synergies between specific ingredients, the nutrients they contain and even dog food production methods. More information on the algorithm used to calculate nutritional ratings is available at AllAboutDogFood.co.uk.

“It goes without saying that creating the highest quality raw pet food is a passion for all of us here at Nutriment. As a team of true dog lovers, being able to create raw food which contributes to the health and happiness of our pets is really rewarding,” comments Ryan Winwright, Trade Manager at Nutriment. “Continuing to be recognised for what we do and how we do it is something that makes us all very proud and drives us to continue our commitment and dedication to this industry.”

The recently-launched Nutriment Support range has also been given a very high introductory ranking, with a nutritional rating of between 94-98%. The support range is specifically designed by Nutriment’s in-house nutritionists to provide nutritional support for ongoing canine health concerns and has recently won the New Product Award at PATS Sandown. The range is available in 5 varieties: Low Purine & Phosphorus (98%), Liver (97%), Recovery (96%), Kidney (96%) and Light (94%).

In the seven days leading up to the publication of this release, over 2000 people have viewed the product page of the Nutriment Adult products – making it the most viewed product page across the site. The review given by All About Dog Food is hugely complimentary: “I'm not sure there are enough superlatives in the English language for Nutriment. Each of the Nutriment adult varieties contains a whopping 85% high grade, British meat. Nutriment is not only grain free, it also doesn't contain any carb alternatives like potatoes, lentils or even peas. Instead, Nutriment uses an excellent array of top- end vegetables. The range and quality of the nutritional supplements is really second to none. Naturally, Nutriment is free from anything remotely controversial and is completely hypoallergenic making it suitable for even very sensitive dogs. Conclusion: Nutriment is raw feeding at its very best.”

Later this year, Nutriment will be exhibiting at PATS Telford and taking part in the PetQuip awards, which is in association with the trade show. The team are hopeful that the success and positive reception that the Nutriment portfolio continues to receive will extend to this event.

Pet firm reaches regional finals of NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards

Pet food manufacturer Poppy’s Picnic has made the South West regional finals of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards (GBEAs)...

Pet food manufacturer Poppy’s Picnic has made the South West regional finals of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards (GBEAs). The company has been nominated in the Entrepreneurs' Team of the Year category.

Founded in 2013, the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards acknowledges the hard work and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs and businesses in the United Kingdom.

The 2019 programme sees the Awards held in eight regions – Midlands, Wales, the South West, the North East, the North West, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and London & the South East. The GBEAs have celebrated some outstanding entrepreneurs over the years who have all gone on to become household names including BrewDog, JustEat and TangleTeezer. If successful at the regional finals, Poppy’s Picnic will bid for the grand prize at the national finals in London later this year.

Founder, Dylan Watkins commented: “We are over the moon to have been shortlisted. We entered the Team of the Year category because, as The GBEA team say themselves, '“No man is an island” and that couldn't be more true in my experience as an entrepreneur. I rely on my team, from the wonderful VIP (Very Important Paws) Team answering customer queries, to our butchers, marketeers and operations team, to be able to deliver our customers and their dogs' award-winning food. I’m thrilled that we are all being recognised together. “

Dylan Watkins launched Poppy’s Picnic in 2016 to make it easy for people to feed their dogs a fresh, raw food diet the way nature intended. Based in the heart of Wiltshire, the company’s tasty wholesome recipes have been lovingly crafted with the help of canine nutritionists and fourth generation butchers. With no hidden nasties, the balanced meals contain all the goodness a dog needs for optimal health and wellbeing. The food can be bought in independent pet shops around the UK, online and in Hong Kong.

Poppy’s Picnic received four offers on BBC 2 Dragons’ Den in 2018 and has since been featured on Come Dine With Me, ITV’s This Morning as well as in national news titles and BBC Radio London and Wiltshire. Since overfunding during a successful crowdfunding campaign early last year, Poppy’s Picnic has won 8 national and regional awards and nearly a thousand 5 star reviews.

Dylan Watkins has recently been appearing as an ambassador in online commercials for the NatWest Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme which Poppy’s Picnic participated in to help grow the business.

In a nail-biting first film to be launched today top international sheepdog handlers Mosse Magnusson (Scotland), Toddy Lambe (Ireland) and Derek Fisher (USA) compete for a place in the final of ‘A Way with Dogs’ – series 2.

CSJ’s YouTube channel will then continue to keep viewers on the edge of their seats every 2 weeks as each new programme is aired to reveal the other top-rank competitors grappling with problem sheep, the elements and each other’s skills.

Fascinating in-depth interviews with all the 13 handlers are also on www.awaywithdogs.co.uk which give an insight into how they create such a close bond with their dogs and are able to capitalise on the clever Border Collie breed’s will to work.

Again, as in the highly praised series 1 which aired in 2016 all the action is set in the beautiful Denbighshire countryside which is home to CSJ’s founder Ceri Rundle and her award winning Specialist Canine Feeds, herbs and treats business.

Ceri herself has an outstanding pedigree in the sheepdog world including being the first lady to represent Wales in the first Young Handlers competition held at the Supreme International Championships at Armathwaite in 1980, the first lady to qualify for the Welsh National Team with her homebred dog, Bwlch Hemp in 1996, Reserve in 1997 and later earned 2 further national ‘caps’ with two Hemp sons, Moel Cap and Moel Nip. Cap also partnered Ceri at the World Trials in Ireland in 2005.

She was the first lady to be elected on to the Panel of National Judges for Wales which has allowed her to judge in USA, Europe and Scandinavia and was also honoured to become Chair of the North Wales Sheepdog Society in the early '90s.

Ceri’s knowledge and standing in the sport of sheepdog trials enabled her to bring her brainchild of A Way with Dogs series 1 to YouTube and it was such a success that series 2 was immediately being clamoured for.

The hard work is now complete and the action starts in the battle for the A Way with Dogs series 2 trophy – be sure to watch (you’ll be hooked).

Dog food labels too hard to read for half of Brits

New research has revealed that millions of UK pet owners are becoming increasingly confused by food labels and are unsure as to what is in the food they are feeding their dogs...

Dog owners in the UK are frequently trying to treat their furry friends like a true member of the family. As part of this, many are making a conscious effort to feed their dogs healthy and nutritious food. However, with so many food options available for various dog breeds, shapes and sizes it is hard to know what is best to provide your pooch with.

New research from Paws.com shows that millions of Brits are becoming increasingly confused by food labels and are unsure as to what is in the food they are feeding their dogs.

The key stats:

  • 44% of Brits say that dog food labels are difficult and at times impossible to read
  • 30% of Brits say that dog food labels make it harder to maintain a healthy diet for their dog
  • 28% of Brits say that the complicated food labels are the primary reason they find dog food shopping difficult
  • 39% of Brits don’t feel that they know enough about the ingredients in the food they feed their dogs
  • 44% of Brits wish there was a solution that would make figuring out dog food ingredients easier

Feeding your four legged friend is an important task that many Brits want so succeed in performing to the best of their availability by giving their pups the most nutritious meal possible. However, with so many varieties of food and an increasing amount of confusing jargon, it is hard to know exactly what is in your dog's meal.

Stephanie Wenban, vet at Paws.com and dog health expert, offers the following commentary: "The vast majority of pet owners want to provide nutrient rich foods for their animals. Many different dog breeds have different nutritional needs and may require different food to others, however it is becoming increasingly hard to decipher confusing labels that come with dog food packages. There needs to be a simpler solution to finding your loved pet the best food for them."

Paws.com has an innovative traffic light labelling system for all of the food that it provides so pet owners can know exactly what is going into their dog's meal. The website also offers food subscriptions that are specifically tailored to a pet's needs based on their breed and any other requirements they may have.

Pets at Home criticised by bird welfare group

Bird lovers have criticised Pets at Home after a dead gull was found in netting above one of their stores, according to newspaper reports.

Bird lovers have criticised Pets at Home after a dead gull was found in netting above one of their stores, according to newspaper reports.

Janine Fleming of Bardsea Bird Sanctuary voiced her concerns after a gull was found dead in the netting above Pets At Home in Barrow-in-Furness.

She told the NW Mail newspaper: "Pets at Home don't care about wildlife. They used to let local wildlife charities go in to raise awareness and much needed funds but no longer allow them. They sell wildlife food though so are very happy to make money from wildlife. Shame on them."

A spokesperson from Pets At Home said: "We’re really sorry that some customers have found it distressing to see deceased gulls on our roof, our colleagues are upset by it too. The netting we use is wildlife friendly but until we can get up there to take a look, we can’t for sure say what’s happened.”

National campaign to promote responsible dog walking

Exmoor National Park, one of the UK’s 15 National Parks, and leading Somerset-based pet accessory company, Oscar & Hooch have joined forces to launch a national campaign to promote responsible dog walking in the countryside...

Exmoor National Park, one of the UK’s 15 National Parks, and leading Somerset-based pet accessory company, Oscar & Hooch have joined forces to launch a national campaign to promote responsible dog walking in the countryside.

The campaign, which will run for the duration of the summer school holidays, will encourage dog owning families and other dog walkers to go out and enjoy the spectacle of the Exmoor National Park and other UK beauty spots whilst at the same time, reminding them to keep their dogs under control at all times so that wildlife, livestock and other visitors are not disturbed.

Dog walkers will also be encouraged to clean up any dog mess and dispose of it properly to keep the park and other destinations clean and tidy for other walkers to enjoy and to prevent any harm or disease to other animals and wildlife.

According to statistics provided by The Kennel Club, since 2010, dog ownership is up 10% and is now at 8.5 million dogs. 26% of homes have a dog and astonishingly over half of all outdoor visits include a dog.

There are many benefits to welcoming dogs in the countryside such as encouraging healthy lifestyles and supporting local visitor economies. Owning a dog not only provides owners with the opportunity to go out and enjoy the great outdoors but also has many health benefits providing regular exercise for many people. Owning a dog is good for mental health providing interaction with other dog walkers and companionship.

However, there are also some concerning issues associated with irresponsible dog ownership. According to NFU Mutual, the cost of livestock worrying has risen 67% over the past two years in the UK. The rural insurer said not all livestock farmers insure against sheep worrying, but it estimates the annual cost to the industry is now £1.6m, while the average cost of a claim has risen by more than 50% to £1,300.

All the UK National Parks have a policy of encouraging responsible dog walkers and Exmoor, like the other National Parks has a set of guidelines for dog owners to follow. Keeping a dog under close control, particularly around livestock and areas of ground nesting birds is a key issue, as is regular worming and clearing up dog mess responsibly.

Dan Barnett, Access and Recreation Manager, Exmoor National Park Authority said: “Generally, your dog should be under close control at all times and there are specific areas and times of the year that they need to be kept on a lead. There are around 620 miles (1000 kilometres) of public rights of way (e.g. footpaths and bridleways) on Exmoor for you and your dog to enjoy.

"On public rights of way there is no legal requirement to keep your dog on a lead but, unless you are very confident about your dog’s obedience, we strongly recommend that you do as they must be under close control.

"There are all sorts of scents and smells that may prove too tempting to resist and result in your dog disappearing into the distance. You will inevitably meet livestock, other people, dogs, cyclists and horse riders at some point and there is potential for confrontation if your dog is out of control.

There are over 18,000 hectares of open access land for you to explore where the public have a right of access on foot with a dog, however your dog must be kept on a lead of less than two metres during the bird nesting season (1st March to 31st July) and at all times near livestock.”

“Making sure that your dog has a well-fitted collar and strong lead is important to ensure your dog does not escape its lead and run away from you,” says Elaine Steckler, co-founder of Oscar & Hooch, manufacturers of British handmade dog accessories.

It is also important to take a plentiful supply of poo bags with you on your walks and to make sure that these are disposed of properly in bins or taken home with you for appropriate disposal.” continues Elaine.

The six-week national awareness campaign will consist of an online quiz which entrants can enter to win an Oscar & Hooch collar and lead each week. This will be integrated with a social networking campaign on both the Exmoor National Park and Oscar & Hooch social media platforms together with a press campaign across all national and regional media.

Oscar & Hooch will also be donating 10% of sales through their website over the six week period when customers use the code EXMOOR at checkout
