Pet industry needs to 'level-up’ salaries of sales reps

Pet product suppliers are in danger of losing talented sales reps to other industries offering higher salaries and better benefits, according to a recruitment specialist.

Lynda Ward, owner of the award-winning Pet Trade Solutions, said: “Salaries for field sales roles in the pet industry have crept up over the past few years to a much more acceptable level, but they still have a way to go compared to similar roles in other industries.

“The pet trade is haemorrhaging experienced and respected people who simply cannot afford to say ‘No’ to better salaries offered in other sectors.”

Lynda added: “We also still have a huge disparity in wages for people carrying out the same roles. In general (depending on experience) a Territory Manager can expect to have a base salary of late £30ks to early £40ks plus a commission or bonus package…however some businesses still expect to attract good representation for less than £30k.

“Looking at ‘levelling-up’ from the same perspective as politicians – that is areas of the country – salaries in the pet industry have always been and generally remain much lower for territories outside London and the South-East. Is this fair?”
