The popular BBC2 TV programme Dragons’ Den starts its 17th series on Sunday and among the budding entrepreneurs are a husband-and-wife pet food business.

The identity of the couple is still under wraps but according to the BBC’s website they take along their four-legged friend to help them achieve their ambition for their pet food business.

Will any of the Dragons, including newcomer Sara Davies, invest in the pet food market? Find out at 8pm on BBC2 on Sunday.

95% of dog foods don't reveal their exact ingredients, according to new research

New research claims a staggering 95% of dog foods owned by big brands don't reveal their exact ingredients...

  • 95% of dog foods owned by big brands don't reveal their exact ingredients
  • 85% of supermarket own-label dog food contains "meat and animal derivatives"
  • Over HALF of big brand dog food contains vegetable derivatives

New research from Paws.com looks at over a thousand wet and dry dog foods across Britain's supermarkets and Amazon's bestseller list and found that a staggering 95% of dog foods owned by big brands don't reveal their exact ingredients.

This research found four common trends in a lot of dog food that lead to hard to decipher dog food labels.

1. Mystery meats
85% of supermarket own-label dog foods and almost two-thirds of big brand dog foods list "meat and animal derivatives" as an ingredient. This ambiguous term doesn't really tell you what part of the animal your pet is eating and could include feathers, beaks, wool and even hooves. These are unsurprisingly harder for your pup to digest.

2. Vague vegetables
Over half of of big brand dog food labels and two-thirds of supermarket own label dog food lists 'derivatives of vegetable origin’ as an ingredient. This does not inform you as to what vegetables are being used and may even contain byproducts from human food production such as seed and corn husks, twigs and leaves which are obviously not a nutritious treat for your dog.

3. Fuzzy fats
"Oils and fats" is another vague term found on dog food products. When this appears it is unclear exactly what is being used. Dogs need fats in their diet, but get more nutrients from fats that are rich in healthy omega 3 and 6. The generic term of 'oils and fats' may be leaving your dog open to eating highly processed fats from any animal. 68% of big brand dog food lists unspecified 'oils and fats' as an ingredient.

4. Unclear carbs
Many dog food labels list "cereals" as an ingredient which could refer to any food that contains any number of grains in any form. Highly processed flours have very little nutritional value and can cause your dog’s blood glucose levels to massively fluctuate. This increases the risk of diabetes, weight issues and inflammatory conditions.

Dr. Steph Wenban, Paws.com's vet and pet wellbeing specialist, offers the following commentary:

"Many owners want to treat their pet like a family member and give it the best food possible, but a lot of  people are unaware of exactly what is in their dog's food. Confusing labels with ambiguous ingredients make it difficult for people to ensure that their furry friend is getting the essential nutrients to help them develop and grow.

"At Paws.com we recognise this trend and ensure that all of our food comes with our innovative traffic light labelling, this tells pet owners exactly what is in their loved animal's food so they can be sure that they are feeding their dog the best ingredients."

Retailers suffer as small pet food sales are lost to grocery

Supreme Petfoods has surveyed more than 500 independent pet retailers and found that over half (54%) report that in the small pet category they have experienced an adverse impact on sales as a result of brands moving into mass grocery channels. Stores that experienced the greatest decline in sales were those located close to mass grocery or discount stores.

Supreme Petfoods has surveyed more than 500 independent pet retailers* and found that over half (54%) report that in the small pet category they have experienced an adverse impact on sales as a result of brands moving into mass grocery channels. Stores that experienced the greatest decline in sales were those located close to mass grocery or discount stores.

It's perhaps no surprise that retailers are taking these factors into account when selecting the brands they support. The respondents say that specialist manufacturer, Supreme, is the most recommended small pet food brand, with the Tiny Friends Farm and Science Selective ranges accounting for over a third of all recommendations.

The company is also given the most shelf space in their store, with 36% of retailers reporting they allocate most of their facings to the company's products, while another 27% give even facings for all brands stocked.

The survey identified that the top three most valued sources of information include manufacturer emails, wholesaler magazines and trade magazines and 40% of stores say they visit PATS. Some 80% also say they take advantage of promotions in wholesaler magazines to preserve sales and their bottom line.

Retailers reported that consumer demand around the top trends is focused on grain-free, natural and eco-friendly products. In many cases, they say brand selection is driven by consumers who are already looking for a specific product but breeder, vet and retailer recommendation can all have an influence on the choice.

Claire Hamblion, Marketing Manager at Supreme Petfoods, says, "It's disappointing that retailers are feeling the impact of multichannel brands and their distribution. Clearly this means they need to be very careful about stocking and recommending products that are widely available in mass consumer outlets.

"We're giving a lot of focus to educating pet owners about the benefits of specialist brands and the value that an expert retailer can bring to their shopping experience. It's important to match consumer expectation by ensuring specialist brands are stocked and that the fixture is easy for them to navigate.

"Our research shows that the small pet category is often the gateway to other purchases made by multi-pet owners, so it's especially critical to the success of an outlet."

To find out more about promotional offers and products specific to the independent pet trade, contact Supreme on 01473 823296 or visit www.supremepetfoods.com.

*The survey was carried out by telephone by Supreme Petfoods during July 2019 and is based on responses from 507 independent retailers.

This year Company of Animals is celebrating its 40th anniversary. From humble beginnings in 1979 when founder Dr Roger Mugford established an animal behaviour consultancy, the business has grown into a market leading, global brand specialising in innovative training products and animal psychology.

One of the hallmarks of Company of Animals’ success has been its continued focus on innovation.

One of the business’ first innovations was Dr Mugford’s invention of Halti, the world’s first dog head collar. Since its launch in 1984 the Halti head collar has become an iconic training product which now in its fifth iteration helps to stop dogs pulling on the lead.  In recent years the Halti range has expanded to include a No Pull Harness as well as a variety of training and walking leads.

Company of Animals has also developed the Baskerville muzzle, which first came to market in 1987 and relaunched in 2019 with a new and improved design, as well as the Pet Corrector and Multi-Clicker training products.

Diversifying its product portfolio in 2016 the company branched out to acquire pet grooming brand Pet Head.

The success of the business over the past four decades has led to industry recognition including  a lifetime achievement award for Dr Mugford from World Pet Association and PetQuip in 2015, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and International Trade in 2018 and the Brand of the Year at the World Branding Awards in 2018 and 2019.

With a new CEO at the helm following Dr Mugford’s decision to step back from the day to day running of the business and a new Commercial Director and Global Head of Marketing recently appointed, there is a clear ambition for future growth.

Dr Mugford said: “It has been an incredible four decades for Company of Animals and the pet industry as a whole.  We have seen so many changes through the years and we have remained at the forefront of innovation. We continue to create new products and remain the leader in the pet training accessories category.

“It’s an exciting time for us as a company as we expand our presence in the pet arena with ambitious plans to grow worldwide market share. With a strong and experienced team in place to lead the business into the future I foresee the next 40 years being as thrilling as the first.”

Natures Menu flying high with flyball team sponsorship

Natures Menu has been announced as official sponsors of the Focus Flyball Team. As part of the sponsorship agreement, members of the Focus Flyball team will each be fed on the company's range of wholesome, raw and natural products...

Natures Menu has been announced as official sponsors of the Focus Flyball Team.

As part of the sponsorship agreement, members of the Focus Flyball team, which consists of six teams of four dogs who race side-by-side over a 51-foot-long course, will each be fed on Natures Menu’s range of wholesome, raw and natural products. Natures Menu has also made a donation to the Team, allowing the Focus Flyball Team to purchase the latest equipment for the sport.

The unique and exciting sport involves two teams of four dogs, racing side-by-side with each dog being required to run over a jump to trigger a Flyball box, which then releases a ball. The dog must then retrieve the ball and return over the jumps.

The team is currently ranked at number three out of 600 and they have recently broken the outdoor grass record in Europe with a time of 15.13 seconds. The team includes various dog breeds including Onyx, Manchester Terrier who is the only Manchester Terrier in the country to compete in a flyball team with a time of sub 16 seconds!

Sarah Prince, Team Captain of The Focus Flyball Team, said: “We are extremely pleased to have agreed a sponsorship agreement with Natures Menu. We spotted Natures Menu at Crufts earlier this year and approached the team to see if they would be interested in joining forces – we’re so happy they said yes! The sponsorship will make such a difference to us as not only will all the dogs be fed on wholesome food packed with natural goodness, but we will also be able to better ourselves and upgrade to new equipment. We are very much looking forward to working with Natures Menu.”

Craig Taylor, Managing Director at Natures Menu, adds: “The Focus Flyball Team is a fantastic group and one that we were keen to partner with. We’re delighted to be feeding the six teams Natures Menu products to ensure they are in the best possible condition to compete in the races and put in a winning performance. We wish the Team all the very best of luck at the British Flyball Association Championships in August – we can’t wait to see them compete!”

Natures Menu specialises in raw dog and cat food made with fully traceable quality meats and fish, blended vegetables, fruits and healthy carbohydrates. It uses British suppliers and ethical product sources wherever possible.

Bought By Many partners with FirstVet to offer customers free video vet consultations

Bought By Many has announced a partnership that will enable its pet insurance customers to access free video consultations with fully qualified vets via the FirstVet app.

Bought By Many has announced a partnership that will enable its pet insurance customers to access free video consultations with fully qualified vets via the FirstVet app.

Customers can video call UK-registered vets to check a pet’s symptoms, get advice on treatment they can carry out at home or find out if they need to be referred to a local vet.

To access the service, Bought By Many customers can download the free FirstVet app and select Bought By Many as their insurer when signing up. They will then be able to use the service as often as they like without incurring FirstVet’s standard consultation costs of £20 - £30 per call.

Many common pet health issues can be treated in the comfort of their own home, meaning owners only need to take their pet to the vet when absolutely necessary. Bought By Many customers can save time, money and potential stress to their pet by using the free FirstVet service. When a referral to a local vet is needed, FirstVet provides detailed notes of the initial consultation to both the owner and the vet.

This is the latest customer innovation from Bought By Many, who were named the UK’s most trusted pet insurance provider by Moneywise in June 2019. Bought By Many designs unique insurance products using search data and customer feedback. Pet owners can choose between policies that can cover pre-existing conditions, have fixed price premiums and a policy that offers money back if a customer doesn’t claim.

Bought By Many won the Gold Trusted Service Award in 2018 and 2019 award from Feefo, with more than 7,500 five-star reviews on the platform in the past year.

Launched in the UK earlier in 2019, FirstVet is a start-up whose service offers crucial intermediary advice for pet owners who are concerned about their pet’s health but aren’t sure if they need to visit a vet. FirstVet delivers over 11,000 consultations every month to 150,000 users across Scandinavia and the UK. They have an average customer rating of 4.9/5 from over 40,000 user reviews.

The partnership originates from Bought By Many’s research into the Swedish insurance market ahead of a planned launch there in 2019.

David Prien, FirstVet’s CEO & co-founder, comments:

“FirstVet couldn't be more excited to offer our veterinary video consultation service together with Bought By Many in the UK. From our first meeting with the Bought By Many team, we knew that our values were aligned. We both share a mission to bring the best that technology has to offer both to pet owners and to the veterinary care process. Offering pet owners the chance to speak face-to-face with an experienced veterinarian via a video call is a great way to make sure that all pets are getting the right treatment, as fast as possible, in the right location.”

Steven Mendel, CEO and Co-founder of Bought By Many commented:

“Our pet insurance is more than a financial service, we want our policies to improve the lives of pets and owners. We’re delighted that our partnership with FirstVet gives all our customers free access to a vet using a simple video call. The service is a great fit with our insurance and allows owners to get convenient, expert veterinary advice. Customers this year voted us the most trusted pet insurance provider in the UK and our partnership with FirstVet shows we’re always looking at how we can use technology to improve our service.”

The popular pond plant was one of three aquatic plants being considered for inclusion on the EU’s list of banned invasive species, along with Giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) and Senegal tea plant (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides).

Following representations from OATA and a meeting between government officials and UK aquatic plant growers, Defra made objections about the three aquatic plants during the EU listing process which led to the temporary reprieve for Pistia stratiotes.

Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee said: “We are always supportive of stopping the sale of problematic invasive plants and have done so in the past. But where there is little evidence to support a ban in the UK then we will fight to make that case.

“We are pleased the EU has called a timeout on the listing of Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) following our lobbying of Defra which then made objections to the EU. We were able to air many of our arguments at a special meeting we organised between UK aquatic plant growers and Defra officials and we also provided valuable data to the EU to demonstrate the value of this plant to the trade.”

In submissions to the European Commission, OATA showed that sales of water lettuce had gone up by almost 500% across Europe as the UK trade had responded to recommendations by Defra to sell the plant as an alternative to Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) when this was banned from sale. OATA also submitted a proposal for a regional listing for water lettuce to ensure the plant could still be sold in parts of the EU where it was not an invasive issue, along with suggestions on how this could achieved.

However, OATA believes it is likely the EU will return to this plant species in the future so will continue to press for the adoption of regional, rather than EU-wide, measures.

The other two pond plants Giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) and Senegal tea plant (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides) did not escape the ban on sales which will come into force in due course.

Beaphar team celebrates 25th anniversary of UK trading

The 1st August was a day of celebration, as Beaphar celebrated 25 years of business in the UK.

Co-workers from up and down the country come together to celebrate in the historic city of Cambridge, while Beaphar CEO, Henk Aa, travelled across from Head Office in the Netherlands for the occasion. The festivities including a guided tour of the colleges, a punting trip and a private dinner in the Wordsworth Room of St John’s College.

While the day was a celebration of every individual’s hard work and dedication to the company, for two members of the Beaphar Team it was an extremely special day.

August 1st also marked 25 years of service for Beaphar UK’s Business Manager, Dr Sue Huggett, and Customer Services Manager, Carol Player (pictured right).

Carol was surprised with a beautiful bunch of flowers at the office, and during the evening was surprised once again with a commemorative book filled with photos from her time at Beaphar.

To conclude the evening, Roland Huggett, UK Sales Manager, had a surprise for the rest of the team. He had two beautiful photo books created which documented Beaphar UK’s entire 25 year history.

But there are still some other important people that Beaphar UK would like to thank.

Dr Sue Huggett said,:“Beaphar’s success in the UK is not only thanks to the combined effort of our Sales, Marketing, Customer Services, Production, IT and Accounts teams. It is also down to our customers. Without the support of our retailers we wouldn’t be where we are today.

“We’d like to thank you for your support for the past 25 years, and look forward to continuing to strengthen these relationships for many more years to come.”

Expectations high for Himalayan Cheese treats

Expectations are high for Pawfect Foods’ Himalayan Cheese treats, which are set to launch in various formats – puffs, bars and strips – at PATS Telford next month.

Already the Spring launch of the company’s all encompassing offer, including products like Pawfect Doggy Cuppa, Nature’s Munch and Dr Veneta’s Pawfect Kitchen, has brought rich praise. Now it’s the turn of Himalayan Cheese treats to take the plaudits.

Calicum-rich milk in its raw form is almost impossible for any dog to enjoy, but turn it into a long-lasting and rugged Himalayan cheese stick and you have a high protein chewy treat that will occupy a pet for what seems an eternity whilst providing some welcome dental relief (removing plaque and tartar).

Turn the clock back a century and this was actually a revered long-lasting snack for the Himalayan human community, however today it’s dogs who are the biggest beneficiary of an all-natural chew made at altitude (some 15,000+ feet) by seasoned Churpi makers using milk from hormone-free herds (yaks and cows) raised in pristine, chemical-free pastures.

This is an unrushed treat made the old-fashioned way, free from overt mechanisation and fast-moving conveyor belts, a cheese-themed treat that has permission to lie in the sun for 35 days before being given a sumptuous smoky twang thanks to being smoke dried in some weather-worn sheds.

Historically Himalayan chew sticks were an issue for younger and older dogs with less bite, which is exactly where the new Himalayan Cheese Puffs come in which now means that irrespective of your dog’s breed, age or size there’s a dairy-themed treat to be enjoyed.

The new, multi-million pound clinic, opened last July by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, took two years to plan, with the partners of the practice ensuring they incorporated as many suggestions from the practice team as possible.

There is also improved staff facilities such as accommodation for visiting external students and a fitness room for staff to use.

Scarsdale Vets (Derby) including Pride Referrals, has become the latest group to join Independent Vetcare (IVC).

“We’re delighted that Scarsdale have chosen to join us on our journey to develop a fantastic network of clinics and hospitals across the country, united in our common desire to deliver first class  veterinary care, both to first opinion and referral clients," comments Paul Cowling, UK CEO.

IVC’s Commercial Director Stuart Caton (MRCVS) said: “Scarsdale and Pride Referrals’ decision to join us is a ringing endorsement of IVC’s values and principles; we have always championed clinical excellence and local autonomy and our proven track record for delivering on our promise was a key factor in the process.

"Scarsdale group has an unrivalled reputation in the profession and the team provide such a high standard of care; Pride Referrals will be a vibrant part in our referral network and there is so much we can learn from their first-opinion sites, as well as their farm and equine clinic.”

John Turkington, Senior Partner of Scarsdale commented: “Over the last few months we’ve been looking for the right ‘home’ for our group – and how Pride Referrals, our Farm & Equine Practice and our network of small animal first-opinion clinics would continue to run going forwards was very much at the forefront our mind.

"We needed to be certain that our award winning referral service would carry on in the same way it has up until now so that we can guarantee an ongoing quality of service that our referring practices have come to expect.

"Our diligence led us to conclude that IVC’s reputation for clinical excellence and keeping things relatively autonomous at a practice level, was truly deserved and we are convinced that this decision is in the best interests of all our staff and clients."

Scarsdale Group consists of Pride Referral Hospital, a Farm and Equine Practice and 10 further veterinary practices in and around Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

The Game Fair proved to be the best result for Welsh Spaniels since 2006. In a very close competition Wales ran out winners, with England 8 points behind in second, Ireland were third, 7 points behind England, with Scotland in fourth.

Alan Rees (Wales Captain) sent this report to CSJ after the Game Fair Home International, Hatfield House.

“What a fantastic International Gundog Competition!

England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each running 5 Retrievers and 5 Spaniels per team, and the International teams of 10 dogs, being marked out of a potentially maximum score of 1,200 points.

The competition as always was fierce over the two days, but the camaraderie, sportsmanship and atmosphere was one of the best experiences ever, a real credit and advert for our sport.  After running 10 dogs each England ran out overall winners, 22 points behind England were Ireland in second place, and only 5 points separated Ireland and Wales, in third place. Scotland were in fourth place overall.

The International course was extremely well laid out causing all sorts of challenges for both Retrievers and Spaniels who competed.

The Wales Spaniel Team were superb:

  • David Gregory running Hillfighter Thresher and Draigoch Ella
  • Aled Jones running Barcudwen Molly and Barcudwen Mambo
  • Nathan Quinn running Tynywaun Beartrix

In addition Nathan ran out as Overall Top Spaniel in his first Game Fair, a fantastic achievement. This brilliant result was achieved despite losing two of our selected spaniels, having come into season the day before we travelled to the Game Fair.

The Retriever Team ran out in third place overall  with England Retrievers worthy winners, 15 points behind England were Ireland in second and Wales in third place 20 points after Ireland with Scotland in fourth place:

  • Haydn Willmott with Stykes Boy Llangynidr
  • Andrew Fisher with Kaliture Rooster
  • Vikki Stanley with Minstead Maigret
  • Alan Rees with Fendawood Ecclestone at Delfryd
  • Nigel Probert with Stauntonvale Buckwheat of Llangynidr

The team and their travelling supporters were delighted to have Ceri and Phil of CSJ present at the weekend’s event. Their continued support and sponsorship is very much appreciated by us all.

In concluding I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to each and every one that have been involved with the Wales International Gundog Team this year. A big thank you for all your hard work and efforts!”

Pet food manufacturers hit back at criticism

Pet food manufacturers have hit back at claims that dog food labels too hard to read for half of Brits...

Pet food manufacturers have hit back at claims that dog food labels too hard to read for half of Brits.

New research carried out by Paws.com revealed that millions of Brits are becoming increasingly confused by food labels and are unsure as to what is in the food they are feeding their dogs.

But Michael Bellingham, Chief Executive of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association, has responded to the findings.

He said: “We recognise that pet food labelling isn't as pet owner friendly as we would like it to be; sometimes the terminology can be confusing; however we believe that a traffic light system on pet food labels does not work as it overly simplifies what are currently complex labelling regulations.

“Pet food labelling falls under EU legislation for all animal feed, meaning that the way information is listed on-pack is not always understandable for pet owners, although well understood by farmers. The good news is that most pet food manufacturers provide full product information on company websites and have dedicated customer care lines to provide further support and advice to pet owners.

“The most important piece of information on a pet food label for an owner to understand is the term 'complete'. This is a legal definition and any product labelled as 'complete' must by law provide all the nutrients a pet needs for healthy bodily function.

“In order to formulate a 'complete' product, members of the PFMA formulate their diets in line with FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. These guidelines detail the nutritional needs of cats and dogs at the varying life stages from growth through to senior.

“Our advice to owners is to choose a 'complete' pet food appropriate for their pet's life stage and life style while suiting the pet owner's budget.”

Call for urgent review of animal activities licensing

An investigation into the new Animal Activities Licensing system in England has revealed it has done little to improve animal welfare but is tying up businesses in unnecessary red tape, taking up precious time that could be used to look after animals. That's the view of OATA and REPTA, who are now asking DEFRA for an urgent review of the system...

An investigation into the new Animal Activities Licensing system in England has revealed it has done little to improve animal welfare but is tying up businesses in unnecessary red tape, taking up precious time that could be used to look after animals.

The lack of training for inspectors, who have been given three years to become suitably qualified, means businesses face inexperience and uncertainty from those employed to implement the complex new system.

Some local authorities are also charging exorbitant fees to issue licences for longer than a year, despite clear guidance to the contrary.

OATA & REPTA, who issued a Freedom of Information request to more than 300 English local authorities to examine implementation of the new inspection and licensing regime for businesses selling animals as pets, are now asking Defra for an urgent review of the system.

The two trade associations are also calling for a number of changes to be made to the Selling Animals as Pets guidance, which now encompasses a wider range of businesses, from pet shops to wholesalers, consolidators of fish and breeders of animals other than dogs and cats.

“We always expected a bedding-in period for such a complex new regime but there are just too many substantial flaws, which in some cases are dangerous to animal health, for this to continue without an urgent review by Defra,” said OATA Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee (pictured).

“The higher standards and star rating system are not driving up animal welfare because they are too onerous or frankly unachievable for businesses to bother with them. We estimate that across all pets in England the cost of meeting higher standards exceeds £350,000. Coupled with the fact that some councils are charging more than £1,000 for a 3 year licence then it’s all just too burdensome and expensive for businesses to shoulder.”

REPTA’s Chris Newman says he is particularly concerned by some elements within the Reptile schedule that could lead to suffering or even the death of some animals if they are followed to the letter. And he believes the reptile sector has been very hard hit with high costs to meet new licence requirements.

“Some of the guidance requirements fail to take into account that species within a taxa group can vary tremendously so a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t reflect good animal husbandry and in some cases is actually dangerous to their health. If shops followed the guidance to the letter they could end up killing some animals.

“We estimate the cost to the reptile sector alone could be more than £3 million. That’s a very far cry from the £230,000 Defra’s Impact Assessment predicted for businesses across the whole pet industry and illustrates just how woefully inadequate the preparation for this new regime has been.”

The top six recommendations made in the review are:

  1. Inspections from October 2019 should only be undertaken by inspectors who have undergone the required training. Any costs for using external consultants should be borne by the local authorities
  2. Reduce the requirements for written records, including the sales register.
  3. Review enclosure sizes and water depth requirements to ensure they are practical, proportionate and fit for purpose and do not risk animal welfare.
  4. Introduce meaningful assessments that enable inspectors to assess animal welfare when they visit a business selling animals as pets.
  5. Review and simplify the star rating system and higher standards where they do not provide additional welfare benefits or are not fit for purpose.
  6. Ensure consistent fee setting across local authorities and remind them not to set different fees dependent on length of licence.

The Innocent Pet Care Company’s new air-dried food offers an innovative addition to the complete dog food market. Forming a new category of food (it isn’t a kibble, wet or frozen), the air-dried food is made in Yorkshire with 70% British lamb or wild salmon.

Founder Chloe Heaton said: “Customers love the quality of our treats and have been asking us to make a complete food for years. Whilst keeping our small company’s big values at the forefront of development, we have worked with leading nutritionists to create a unique and exceptional complete meal.”

The air-dried dog food is made using ethically sourced, quality British ingredients combined with the company’s bespoke, gentle drying expertise.  The result is a semi-moist, great tasting, healthy and nutritious feast.

The handmade production method means with minimum processing and no high temperatures, the nutrients and flavours of the ingredients are maintained.  The food can be stored in an ambient environment, and once opened the pack lasts for up to 4 months making it very convenient.  As it has not been cooked, it is proving to be a popular choice for those tempted by raw feeding but who need a more convenient solution.

Chloe added: “Our food not only offers total convenience as an everyday food, but it is ideal for raw feeders to have on standby for those days when they’ve forgotten to take meat out of the freezer, or they’re going away for a holiday.”

Committed to reducing their environmental impact, the packaging for the food is 100% recyclable.  It is available in 3kg packs and comes in 2 flavours (Lamb Casserole and Wild Salmon Fishcakes), with an RRP of £40.

Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd recalls products over health ris

Welsh firm Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling four batches of frozen raw pet food – Frozen Raw Beef, Chicken, Lamb, and Chicken & Tripe Pet Food – because Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals, has been found in the products.

Welsh firm Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling four batches of frozen raw pet food – Frozen Raw Beef, Chicken, Lamb, and Chicken & Tripe Pet Food – because Listeria monocytogenes has been found in the products.

In a risk statement issued on its website the Food Standards Agency said: "Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.

"In humans, symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

"Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

Aberystwyth-based Raw Treat Pet Food Ltd is recalling the above products from their customers. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

The FSA has issued the following advice to consumers: "If you have bought any of the above products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with animal faeces. Raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces."
