Private equity firm to acquire MPM Products

Partners Group, one of the largest firms in the global private markets industry, has agreed to acquire pet food business MPM Products, from investment company 3i Group.

Headquartered in the UK, MPM operates market leading premium wet cat food brands, including Applaws, Reveal, and Encore. MPM's products are characterised by their focus on the use of real meat and fish that is "visibly different" to mass market offerings, natural clean label ingredients, and an innovative range.

MPM sells its products in over 50 countries, with a strong position in markets across North America and Europe. The company maintains sales channels across e-commerce and retail stores.

The cat food sector is benefitting from several thematic tailwinds, including delayed family formation leading to increased pet ownership, the premiumization of products, and resilience due to the essential need of feeding pets. The benefits of wet cat food, including higher moisture content, easier digestion, and enhanced palatability, is further driving the growth of premium products, which is where MPM's sales are focused.

Partners Group will work with MPM's experienced management team to accelerate the company's future growth. Key value creation initiatives will focus on further expanding sales in MPM's largest markets, building operations in new markets, and reinforcing supply chain resilience.

Julian Bambridge, Chief Executive Officer, MPM Products, said: "Feeding is one of the key moments when owners interact with their cats, which reinforces a desire to provide something special at these times. At MPM, our goal is to enrich the lives of pets and owners through visibly better food that uses the highest quality natural ingredients and provides core health benefits. We are excited to continue our strong growth under Partners Group's ownership."

Thomas Clark, Managing Director, Private Equity Goods & Products, Partners Group, commented: "We have been tracking the pet food market as part of our broader thematic research into the 'humanization' of pets. We believe there is a significant growth opportunity in the premium cat food segment as this has historically been underserved by incumbent producers that are primarily 'dog focused'. We look forward to working with Julian, management, and the wider MPM team on our value creation plan."

Nicholas Caronna, Member of Management, Private Equity Goods & Products, Partners Group, added: "The cat food sector has strong fundamentals as cat ownership continues to rise across developed countries. The market has also been resilient across economic cycles. MPM has made tremendous strides to expand geographically, and we look forward to supporting the team in this continued growth."

National Pet Shop Day gains pace as sign-ups more than double for 2025

With momentum building and more than double the number of retailers already signed up, National Pet Shop Day is on track to be even bigger in 2025. With momentum building and more than double the number of retailers already signed up, National Pet Shop Day is on track to be even bigger in 2025. Returning on Saturday 12th July, the celebration of independent pet retailers has already struck a chord across the sector, and pet shops are once again preparing to roll out the welcome mats.

Launched in 2024 by leading pet healthcare manufacturer Johnson’s Veterinary Products, the campaign aims to spotlight the value of independent pet stores, not just as suppliers, but as pet health and wellbeing hubs offering expert advice and meaningful customer care. The campaign is supported by the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and the British Independent Retail Association (Bira), who share a mission to drive more footfall to the high street and champion the businesses behind the counter.

With over 400 shops already registered to take part (more than twice the number at this stage last year) it’s clear that National Pet Shop Day™ has tapped into something powerful. Independent retailers are seizing the opportunity to showcase what makes them special, and customers are responding with enthusiasm.

Last year’s inaugural event set the tone for what National Pet Shop Day is all about –  community spirit, pride in the local high street, and a whole lot of creativity. Across the country, independent pet shops brought their unique flair to the celebrations, turning everyday visits into something memorable and meaningful for customers of all ages.

For example, at Emersons Pet Centre in Felling, nostalgia took centre stage with a striking retro window display crafted from original newspaper clippings from the 1980s. The display not only wowed passers-by but also sparked conversations about the store’s long-standing presence on the high street. Face painting, a children’s petting zone, giveaways and competitions added to the festive atmosphere - and even Cats Protection joined in the fun.

At its stores in Dorset and Berkshire, Marshall’s Pet Food Store went sweet with a counter full of cakes for both two-legged and four-legged visitors. The day’s highlight? Welcoming their oldest and most loyal customer, which was a touching reminder of the role these stores play in the lives of local people and their pets.

Meanwhile, Midland Parrots and Coalville Pet Supplies used the opportunity to invite customers behind the scenes. Visitors could meet rehomed birds and chat with a local dog trainer who was on hand offering free behavioural advice. Discounts on Johnson’s products, live pet portraits from a local artist, and pet-themed quizzes kept everyone entertained, with plenty of reasons to linger.

And over in Olney, Pickles Pet Pantry held a ‘Pickles Party’ and brought together local trainers, veterinary nurses and even a pet photographer to host an event centred around appreciation — not just for pets, but for the loyal customers who’ve supported them since day one. It was a chance to say thank you, reflect on the shop’s journey, and look ahead with pride.

These stories are just a handful of examples, but they show the heart, humour, and hospitality that make independent pet shops so beloved. And this year, expectations are already rising.

Retailers taking part this year can expect more of the same energy, and more tools to help them stand out. From downloadable assets and PR support to event inspiration and social media content, the campaign’s official toolkit makes it easy for stores to make the day their own. And with every shop putting its own spin on the festivities, customers can look forward to even more creativity and fun-filled events across the UK, from special offers, expert drop-ins, competitions, parties and plenty of treats, for pets and their people alike.

“There’s a real appetite for the campaign, and it’s been wonderful to see how creatively retailers responded last year,” says Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s. “We set out to create something that would uplift the sector and give independent pet shops a platform, and it’s clear that message is resonating. Shops aren’t just participating, they’re taking real ownership.”

While National Pet Shop Day is all about celebration, it carries an important message: “Use it or lose it.” Independent pet shops, like many other small businesses, continue to face challenging conditions. With over 10,000 high street closures in the UK in 2023, the need to support local has never been more pressing.

“In an era of faceless transactions and one-click shopping, pet owners value real relationships and knowledgeable advice,” says Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF. “This campaign helps remind people what’s at stake, and what we stand to lose if we don’t keep supporting our independents.”

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, agrees: "This campaign perfectly captures what Bira stands for - celebrating the unique value of independent retailers whilst highlighting the very real challenges they face. Pet shops aren't just businesses; they're community hubs that provide expertise, personal service and local employment. With over 10,000 high street closures last year alone, initiatives like this remind consumers that their choices matter. Support them now, or watch them disappear."

Final call for involvement

With just weeks to go, final preparations are underway, and more retailers are joining by the day. For those still on the fence, there’s still time to get involved and make the most of the growing momentum. Whether you host an in-store event or simply hang the bunting and welcome customers with a smile, the message is simple: you matter, and you’re not alone.

Visit nationalpetshopday.com to download campaign materials and see what other stores got up to last year.

Pet industry leaders launch pet grooming guidelines

Leading pet industry organisations have launched comprehensive new guidelines for professional dog and cat groomers, setting out clear standards designed to protect animal welfare and help pet owners make informed choices about grooming services...

Leading pet industry organisations have launched comprehensive new guidelines for professional dog and cat groomers, setting out clear standards designed to protect animal welfare and help pet owners make informed choices about grooming services.

The Guidelines for Dog and Cat Groomers, developed by the Canine & Feline Sector Group (CFSG) in partnership with the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA), address the current lack of formal regulation in the pet grooming sector by establishing industry-leading best practices.

The new guidelines provide both groomers and pet owners with clear expectations around professional standards, safety protocols, and animal welfare requirements.

The comprehensive document covers everything from qualifications and insurance requirements to specific handling techniques for anxious pets, emergency procedures, and hygiene protocols.

Rob Quest, Chairman of CFSG, said: "These guidelines represent a significant step forward for the pet grooming industry. By establishing clear benchmarks for everything from training to emergency procedures, we're giving pet owners the tools they need to choose groomers who will keep their beloved companions safe and comfortable."

The guidelines establish several key benchmarks for professional groomers, including:

  • Minimum Level 2 qualifications in pet grooming with ongoing professional development
  • Comprehensive insurance coverage protecting pets while in the groomer's care
  • Pet first aid certification and emergency veterinary contacts
  • Individual consultation processes assessing each pet's specific needs and health conditions
  • Strict hygiene protocols including equipment sterilisation after every use
  • Maximum session times to minimise stress on animals
  • Separate and specialised approach for cat grooming services

Nigel Baker, CEO of the Pet Industry Federation, commented: "These guidelines demonstrate the pet grooming sector's commitment to continuous improvement and professional excellence. By setting these standards voluntarily, our industry is showing responsibility and leadership in animal welfare.

"We're particularly pleased that the guidelines address the individual needs of different pets, recognising that a nervous rescue dog requires very different handling from a show-trained poodle, and that cats have completely different requirements from dogs. We encourage all groomers to adopt these guidelines and help raise the bar across the entire sector."

David Bowles from the RSPCA added: “Too often the RSPCA has investigated complaints on pets being injured and even killed at the groomers owing to negligence or bad practice so it is vital that groomers show their customers they take welfare seriously. These guidelines will help fill that gap consumers are crying out for and in setting out the steps to ensure any grooming business is operation professionally it seeks to avoid any problems arising with your pet.  Prevention is always better than cure and following the measures set put on the document will make sure that animal welfare is front and centre of any business.”

The guidelines represent a proactive approach to industry self-regulation, with the participating organisations hoping to demonstrate the sector's maturity and commitment to high standards ahead of any potential government intervention.

The guidelines are being distributed to groomers, veterinary practices, and animal welfare organisations across the UK. For more information visit https://www.cfsg.org.uk/dog-cat-grooming/

Pickles Pet Pantry wins European innovation award

Independent pet nutrition retailer Pickles Pet Pantry has won the ‘Most Innovative Peptide Partner’ award at GA Pet Food Partners’ flagship European industry event...

Independent pet nutrition retailer Pickles Pet Pantry has won the ‘Most Innovative Peptide Partner’ award at GA Pet Food Partners’ flagship European industry event.

The awards were held at GA Pet Food Partners’ state-of-the-art manufacturing site, Plocks Farm – a stunning location known for its heritage, sustainability, and cutting-edge production capabilities.

The event welcomed over 200 guests from across Europe – including retailers, nutritionists, and European partners – for what is widely considered the pet food industry event of the year.

In a highly competitive field, Pickles Pet Pantry emerged as a standout, taking home the top award in innovation ahead of industry leaders from across the continent.

The recognition celebrates Pickles’ development of its in-house brand, Peterinary, a naturally hydrolysed, high-meat-content food specially formulated for allergy-prone pets.

Peterinary blends the latest in nutritional science with natural, responsibly sourced ingredients – all inspired by the needs of the Pickles team’s own beloved pets. Peterinary is changing the lives of pets who previously struggled with sensitivities and poor digestion.

“This recognition is a huge honour,” said Katie Parker, founder of Pickles Pet Pantry.

“Peterinary was born out of a real need we saw in our own dogs – pets who needed something better, gentler, and truly effective. To have that vision recognised at a European level, and by our trusted manufacturing partners, is an incredible milestone for us.”

GA Pet Food Partners, one of Europe’s most respected manufacturers, applauded Pickles Pet Pantry’s commitment to innovation, customer education, and science-led solutions for modern pet health.

“It is remarkable to see the success of Pickles Pet Pantry in such a short space of time,” said James Bracewell, Sales Director and son of founder Roger Bracewell.

“Katie and Jack are really passionate about what they do, and that has truly shone through with the launch of their Peterinary range. Huge congratulations – it’s fully deserved.”

It’s The Dog's brings human-grade reassurance to treats aisle

The arrival of It’s The Dog’s within the UK dog treat scene could prove to be a game-changer within the wider pet food category, tackling the age-old conundrum of ambiguous ingredient decks and highly processed foods...

The arrival of It’s The Dog’s within the UK dog treat scene could prove to be a game-changer within the wider pet food category, tackling the age-old conundrum of ambiguous ingredient decks and highly processed foods.

The reason being that It’s The Dog’s is the young, waggy-tailed sibling of The Protein Ball Co, a pioneering leader within health-minded, protein-savvy snacking for humans, a protein-rich snack provider that operates not only within the UK but throughout the globe (14 markets and counting).

As an ardent small batch, hand-rolled producer of ultra-unprocessed treats that uses only all-natural human-grade ingredients, it was inevitable that when its K9 friendly sub-range took shape, that they would also be made within the same commercial kitchen as its human-treat peers, using the very same, meticulously sourced ingredients.

According to brand spokesperson Hayley Hunt: “We actually make a point of specifying on pack ‘made for dogs, fit for owners,’ because our unwavering commitment to nutrient-dense, human-grade ingredients means that as long as your dog is happy, you can actually share these moreish treats whilst out on your walk.”

Although the core Protein Ball range is date based, a recent foray into producing a sublime  low-calorie nut butter sub-range quickly opened the door to business extending its fine snacking reach to discerning dogs.

Working with respected canine nutritionists and dog care specialists, Hayley and her team were able to craft a healthy fats peanut, butter protein ball containing nutrient-rich pumpkin seeds and ‘fibre friendly’ chia seeds that over-index in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

“The joy of a human food business like ours joining the dog treats fray,” concludes Hayley, “Is that we bring the all-important transparency and traceability that you’d insist upon when dealing with any human food provider.”

With the business soft-launched earlier at the prestigious London Coffee Festival (dog-friendly cafes and bars) and enjoying ‘early door’ wins with pub and café chains and one forward-thinking wholesaler (in tandem with a Pavillion pet shop listing), the business is now readying itself for a couple of pivotal chats with headline retailers and an eagerly anticipated PATS debut this Autumn.

‘Pet humanisation’ (treating one’s furry friend as a family member) has been the hottest trend down the pet food aisle for some time, which makes a shared snack, the obvious next step.

PAWD DRINKS launches new packaging

Pet health supplement company PAWD DRINKS, now on sale across the UK in all of Pets Corner’s 160 stores, has launched its new retail packaging...

Pet health supplement company PAWD DRINKS, now on sale across the UK in all of Pets Corner’s 160 stores, has launched its new retail packaging.

PAWD DRINKS is rapidly becoming a market leader in the health supplement sector since its launch last year. Founders Rory Hanna and Archie Wilson (both 28) were looking for an easier way to administer supplements to dogs other than in pill or powder format. What they quickly discovered, from speaking with multiple vets, is that liquids are both easier to administer, but also more effective.

PAWD DRINKS made the finals of six major industry awards in 2024 and in June last year the company was accepted onto the NatWest Accelerator Programme. It has also recently made the finals of the StartUp Awards for the London region.

The PAWD DRINKS team attended over 60 events last year to promote their products, they have shipped to 8 countries, have received over 200 5-star reviews for their products and have hosted a series of community dog walks. The brand’s debut at PATS saw queues on the stand and interest from the major wholesalers and distributors.

Commenting on their new packaging, Archie said: “We are delighted with the design of our new packaging which gives our range of drinks real shelf appeal. We started as a subscription product but it is really exciting that consumers now have the choice and convenience of buying our products in-store.”

ProtectaPet launches first cut-to-size catio

ProtectaPet, the UK's leading innovator in cat safety and recipient of the prestigious King’s Award for Innovation, has launched the ProtectaPet DIY Catio, now available exclusively at www.protectapet.com.

Uniquely engineered for ultimate flexibility, this is the first DIY catio that can be cut to size, allowing pet owners to adapt the structure precisely to their available space. Whether it's a compact patio or an expansive garden, the ProtectaPet DIY Catio makes customisation accessible to all.

Launched on 27 May 2025, the patent-pending catio has been uniquely designed with both feline welfare and user convenience at its core. Its modular design allows for configuration flexibility, while its trim-to-fit posts mean cat owners no longer need to compromise on space or layout.

In its first week alone, ProtectaPet sold 18 units, a figure that far exceeded initial projections. In response to this surge in demand, the company has expanded its warehouse team, ensuring faster order fulfillment and maintaining the exceptional service standards customers have come to expect.

Made from robust, weather-resistant galvanised steel and UV-stable poly mesh, the DIY Catio is engineered for long-term durability. It features a self-latching gate and is available in multiple sizes and configurations to suit a range of homes. An interactive online planning tool, launching in July, will further simplify the customisation process by helping users visualise, plan, and order their ideal setup with confidence.

“We wanted to offer a solution that matches the quality of our professional installations while empowering cat owners with complete flexibility,” says Simon Davies, CoFounder and Product Designer at ProtectaPet. “This product gives DIY customers the tools to create a secure and stylish outdoor haven for their cats without compromise.

The ProtectaPet DIY Catio is particularly suited for cat owners living near busy roads or in areas where outdoor access carries risks. It also meets the growing demand among indoor-cat owners seeking to provide safe, enriching outdoor experiences for their pets.

“Catio culture has truly taken off in the UK,” adds Eve Davies, Co-Founder and Communications Director at ProtectaPet. “We’ve always prided ourselves on quality and innovation, but we recognised that our earlier DIY solutions lacked the adaptability many customers needed. This new launch changes that, it’s versatile, accessible, and every bit as reliable as our professionally installed systems.”

This launch represents a major milestone in ProtectaPet’s mission to redefine outdoor safety for cats across the UK. It also signals more exciting developments to come later this year, including a new catification range designed to enhance feline wellbeing in every home.

The ProtectaPet DIY Catio is available now at https://protectapet.com/collections/catios, with a range of pricing and configuration options to suit different budgets and spaces.

As part of its plans to expand the retail side of the business, Warwickshire-based raw food manufacturer, Albion Pet Foods has appointed a new Head of Sales.

Wayne Moore, who has decades of sales experience, joins Albion Pet Foods after having specialised in the raw pet food market for the past four years working for other major manufacturers in the sector.

Despite his strong Barnsley accent, Wayne was actually born and raised in North Wales where he lived until he was 11 years old. He developed a love of animals from a young age and he currently owns a menagerie of pets which he keeps at his family home.

New owner of Albion Pet Foods, Gill Bower, has heavily invested in the company since taking it over from the previous owners and has ambitious plans for expansion. Gill has moved the manufacturing side of the pet food to a new plant in Warwickshire so that the whole process can be closely monitored from manufacturing through to distribution.

Gill said: “We aim to offer a good customer service to both retailers and consumers. Albion sources human grade ingredients from DEFRA-approved farms and probably has the most comprehensive range of raw food recipes on the market. As well as a Standard Range and a Pure Meat Range, we also offer Complete recipes, life stage meals, a Chunky Range and a Freeflow Range which makes it easier to portion out the mince and then put the packet back in the freezer for future use.

"We also offer frozen fish and a comprehensive range of natural treats. We offer a select range of products which are only available to the trade. We are passionate about finding more independent retailers who care about quality pet nutrition and we feel that this is an extra service we can offer as our commitment to the trade.

“We are delighted to welcome Wayne to our busy team at Albion Pet Products and look forward to introducing new stockists to the brand and our high quality products.”

New study confirms that puppy training app, Zigzag, reduces future behavioural problems

An insightful new study of 367 pet owners across Europe, North America, Africa and Australia finds that structured, app-based puppy training can significantly reduce the risk of future behavioural issues...

An insightful new study of 367 pet owners across Europe, North America, Africa and Australia finds that structured, app-based puppy training can significantly reduce the risk of future behavioural issues. The study was conducted by Zigzag, in collaboration with the University of Lincoln.

Zigzag, a puppy training app launched in 2021, aims to help owners to confidently raise a well-adjusted, happy pup. It is the first-ever scientifically validated puppy training app, designed to make puppy training simple and effective for pet owners, through bite-sized video lessons, personalised training plans, and 24/7 expert support.

Published in the scientific journal ‘Animals’, the study finds that puppies trained with the Zigzag app demonstrated markedly better behavioural outcomes compared to those without structured support. Pups trained via the app are significantly less likely to develop behavioural issues such as excessive barking, separation-related problems, and reactivity to people or other dogs.

The study highlights how accessible, expert-led digital support can ensure that training techniques introduced in classes or one-to-one sessions are encouraged at home. The findings reinforce that early intervention and consistent, fear-free training are essential for preventing behavioural problems.

Other findings from the study include:

  • While half (50%) of dog owners notice their dogs fear loud noises, Zigzag app users have been able to reduce their puppies’ noise fears through habituation exercises
  • Use of the app is associated with notable reductions in severity of aggression when protecting resources or food and aggression towards other dogs
  • Increased usage of the app correlates with a consistent reduction in the severity of behaviours such as chewing, familiar aggression, and escape

A second stage of the study looks at the clustering of behavioural problems in dogs aged 3 to 6 months old, revealing that certain problem behaviours frequently occur together. This includes fear-related behaviours such as avoidance and trembling, where pups often exhibit multiple anxiety-linked traits simultaneously.

Additionally, some dogs exhibited heightened sensitivity to environmental stimuli and social interactions, leading to behaviours like excessive alertness or nervousness around new people or places.

The research findings from both stages of the study confirm that puppy owners using the app’s training plans can avoid many of the challenges that often lead to dog-frustration or even dogs being surrendered to shelters. Understanding behaviour clusters enables Zigzag to provide more targeted, effective support for puppy owners through the app. It also reiterates how owner consistency and motivation between sessions are key to a puppy’s success.

Lorna Winter, Co-Founder of Zigzag, said: “We envision a positive future where more and more owners are empowered with the support and tools to ensure their dogs lead happy, healthy lives. This research validates that structured, positive training through the Zigzag app makes a measurable difference—not just for today, but for a dog’s entire life.”

Professor Daniel Mills, University of Lincoln, said: “With growing interest in the use of technology to improve animal behaviour, it is important we don’t just act with good intent, but that we properly evaluate the impact of this. Our research indicates that the Zigzag training app has real-world benefits for dog owners.”

Birmingham Dogs Home to host ‘fun-packed’ family day

Birmingham Dogs Home, is hosting a Royal Family Fun Day on the King’s Birthday on Saturday (21st June). The extravaganza will take place at Tudor Grange Park in Solihull from 10am-4pm. Entry is £2 for adults, £1 for children and dogs go free.

A fun affair aimed at bringing the local community together, the theme of the event is ‘paws and pageantry’ and will include a red carpet entrance, live entertainment, crown making, face painting, a dog show, shopping stalls, and more.

Plus, West Midlands Police Dogs will be giving a demonstration.

Though rooted in fun and community spirit – the aim of the day is to raise vital awareness of Birmingham Dogs Home across the region and raise crucial funds to ensure that the charity can continue to support abandoned dogs. Birmingham Dogs Home staff and volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to educate and give advice on training, veterinary care, and responsible pet ownership.

The event, which is kindly sponsored by Ancol Pet Products, will also welcome a number of fantastic local businesses with shop stalls, as well as delicious refreshments on sale too.

It costs Birmingham Dogs Home roughly £6000 a day to keep the doors open to both of its centres in Solihull and Wolverhampton – with over 2000 dogs rescued each year.

Just one of these dogs is Polly, a lovely 4 year old German Shephard who has already shown incredible strength and resilience since being surrendered to Birmingham Dogs Home. After being diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition (PDA – Patent Ductus Arteriosus), she underwent major surgery thanks to the brilliant team at Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service and their generous support.

She’s now on the mend and doing so well physically – but emotionally, Polly still needs a helping hand. Birmingham Dogs Home is looking for a dog-free foster home where Polly can feel safe and start to build her confidence at her own pace. To enquire about Polly or any of the other dogs in Birmingham Dogs Home’s care, please make contact via the website.

Suitable for those of all ages, the Royal Family Fun Day is free to enter and bringing along friends and family for a fun day in the sun is absolutely encouraged.

To find out more information about Birmingham Dogs Home, and how you can support the charity’s work, please visit www.birminghamdogshome.org.uk. Walk ins are welcome at both centres.

Animal activist groups accused of using ‘bully tactics’ over reptile event cancellation

The International Herpetological Society (IHS) has accused animal rights organisations of using ‘bully tactics’ in a bid to get a reptile event called off at Woodbank Garden Centre in Yorkshire....

The International Herpetological Society (IHS) has accused animal rights organisations of using ‘bully tactics’ in a bid to get a reptile event called off at Woodbank Garden Centre in Yorkshire.

The organisation claimed the groups had launched a campaign against the long-standing event despite it meeting all regulatory and welfare standards and operating within the law.

The breeders’ meeting, organised by IHS, permits members to sell surplus captive-bred reptiles and amphibians. But the event, which has been held for many years, has faced renewed criticism from animal activist groups such as the Animal Protection Agency, World Animal Protection, and Freedom for Animals.

However, according to IHS and the venue organisers, these activist groups are engaging in what they describe as ‘bully tactics’ – an ongoing strategy the organisations have used for decades in attempts to shut down legal animal-related events.

The IHS strongly defends the legality and ethics of the event.

“The event is lawful, with recent amendments to the Animal Welfare Act clearly confirming that members are permitted to sell surplus stock at such meets,” an IHS spokesperson stated. “These events have never had any animal welfare issues, and we always ensure high welfare standards.”

Every breeders’ meet is attended by two independent veterinarians, as well as representatives from the local council, DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), and other regulatory bodies. No wild-caught animals are permitted at these events — only captive-bred species may be sold. Furthermore, animals are housed in transport containers for short-term movement only, with continuous monitoring by vets to ensure welfare requirements are met at all times.

In response to recent concerns, Woodbank Garden Centre confirmed that the breeders’ event is a hired function, entirely separate from its pet shop operations. A meeting with the local council in late May resulted in no concerns over licensing or animal welfare. A few procedural recommendations were made and promptly implemented, according to the organisers.

“This latest attack is part of a broader strategy by activist groups whose ultimate goal is to end all forms of animal captivity — including regulated events, pet ownership, and responsible breeding,” said one of the event’s organisers. “These organisations generate significant revenue through emotional campaigns, often misleading the public to support their anti-captivity agenda.”

Critics argue that while such groups claim to protect animals, their long-term objective may be the complete removal of animals from private care and regulated exhibition — an approach many see as extreme and counterproductive.

Organisers say they will not be deterred by what they view as coordinated misinformation campaigns aimed at shutting down legal and responsible animal-related activities.

Responsible Reptile Keeping said: "The campaigners use propaganda and lies to harass local authorities and venues to close down these events where experienced keepers come together to share their knowledge. Who do you think knows more about reptile care? Why anyone listens to the campaigners is a mystery."

IHS added that Bradford council was currently avoiding communication with the organisation in regards to the event, and added that it may need to take the matter further.

Garden centre cancels large-scale reptile event after pet shop licence warning

A Yorkshire garden centre has cancelled a large-scale reptile and amphibian show after being told it could potentially lose its pet shop licence if the event took place...

A Yorkshire garden centre has cancelled a large-scale reptile and amphibian show after being told it could potentially lose its pet shop licence if the event took place.

Woodbank Garden Centre & Nurseries in Bingley had been warned by Bradford City Council that it would be in breach of its pet shop licence if it allowed the event to take place on its premises on 22 June 2025.

Despite the prospect of being stripped of its licence and potentially facing prosecution, the garden centre initially advised the council that it would allow the event anyway.

But this week Woodbank informed customers on its Facebook page that the show was now cancelled and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Bradford City Council warned that the show, organised by the International Herpetological Society (IHS), would involve the sale of thousands of reptiles and would violate the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 and the Pet Animals Act 1951.

Woodbank Garden Centre & Nurseries is licensed as a pet shop by Bradford City Council, and the licence limits the garden centre to the offering for sale of no more than 6 tortoises, 12 guinea pigs, and 6 hamsters alongside tropical and cold-water fish. The sale of any animals on the premises other than those for which a licence has been issued would be outside the scope of, and therefore in breach of, the licence conditions.

Ex Pets at Home director joins Dobbies

George Hutchinson, a former regional operations director at Pets at Home, has joined Dobbies Garden Centres as retail director...

George Hutchinson, a former regional operations director at Pets at Home, has joined Dobbies Garden Centres as retail director.

An experienced retail operator, George was at Pets at Home for four years before moving to Dobbies, and had previously held senior positions at Wickes, B&Q and Tesco.

George said: “Over the past few months Dobbies has relaunched two stores, with more to come – to see that level of investment in both the fabric of the stores, and the store teams, is brilliant. I’m really looking forward to playing a key role in driving Dobbies forward and building on the positive developments that have taken place this year.”

George is one of two appointments aimed at strengthening Dobbies’ executive team, the other being that of Richard Herbert as restaurant director.

Richard is an experienced F&B professional, joining Dobbies from Bourne Leisure, where he led their national food and beverage offering for over four years. Prior to that, he spent nearly 12 years at Pizza Express, latterly as central operations and programme director.

The appointments build on a series of senior appointments that have been made over the last 18 months, bringing with them extensive retail, hospitality and commercial experience.

David Robinson, CEO of Dobbies, said: “We’ve been focused on building a really strong senior team and we’re proud to share the news of these recent appointments. Both George and Richard bring fantastic experience, that complements the expertise we already have in place. They’ll each have essential roles in driving forward our strategy, building on the strong start we have had this spring so far.”

These appointments come as operations director, Nick Anderson, steps down from his role after 12 years.

David adds: “We’d like to thank Nick for his tireless hard work and commitment over the last 12 years. He’s a hugely respected figure in the team, and he’s seen Dobbies through many challenges and successes over the years. We wish him all the best for the future.”

What it means to win a New Product Award at PATS

Winning a New Product Award at the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. Here three companies who triumphed in the Awards at PATS 2024 reveal what the accolade has done for their business...

Winning a New Product Award at the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. It can help turn a new launch into a bestselling item in pet stores around the country and clinch that all-important export deal.

One of the main reasons why the Award is held in such high regard is because it is decided by a panel of independent retailers, who know what it takes for a product to fly off the shelves.

The New Product Showcase at PATS 2025, which takes place from Sunday 28th September to Tuesday, 30th September, in Hall 1 of the NEC Birmingham, is always a popular feature with visitors, and this year’s three-day exhibition is set to attract a record number of entries.

Here three companies who triumphed in the New Products Awards at PATS 2024 reveal what the accolade has done for their business.

Case Study No 1

LickiMat® – Winner of Cat Accessories & Toys with LickiMat® Kitty

Heidi Luedecke, Marketing Director of LickiMat®, said: “As a brand that has often been associated with dogs, we were so pleased to win a PATS New Product Award in 2024 with our LickiMat® Kitty. We are a brand that equally loves and supports both cats and dogs and winning the award helped us demonstrate this part of our mission even more. PATS is recognised across the pet industry, and with record-breaking entries last year, we were honoured to be among the winners.”

Do you think the award has helped to elevate your winning product in terms of exposure?

“Winning this award for our LickiMat® Kitty has most definitely elevated the exposure of this product in our range. With recently designed and launched cat-specific products, we were so delighted to know that the new LickiMat® specifically for kittens was recognised as a key new product in our range for cat owners.”

Have you used the award to promote the product?

“We have been thrilled to use the fact that the LickiMat® Kitty was a winner with the PATS New Product Award in 2024 as a point of conversation with our customers. This has been particularly important on our social media channels where we engage primarily directly with customers worldwide, and also in conversations (online and in person) with our retailers and wholesalers.”

Will you be entering this year’s New Product Showcase?

“Yes, we have some new and exciting products coming soon and look forward to submitting them in the PATS New Product Showcase at the NEC Birmingham in 2025.”

Case Study No 2

Donald Cooke – Winner of Dog Treat Products with Pick N Mix Training Treat Pots (K9 Chew Co) and Grooming Products with Tick Twister Clip Box 3 Piece

Simon Lewis-Dale, head of business development at Donald Cooke, said: “Winning the awards at PATS for both K9 Chew Co and Tick Twister was a massive honour for both of the brands. To get the recognition for developing products that both the panel of judges and subsequently customers recognise as best in class, certainly gives the business a confidence boost.”

Do you think the award has helped to elevate your winning product in terms of exposure?

“Both K9 Chew Co and Tick Twister have seen really strong growth since the award win and it spurred us on to develop our new trade portal to help make the ranges more available to the UK pet trade at www.donaldcooke.co.uk.”

Have you used the award to promote the product?

“We have used the awards both here in the UK and internationally with Tick Twister to help give the buyer that little bit more confidence in trying the products out. We also have the awards in pride of place at our head office as well.”

Will you be entering this year’s New Product Showcase?

“Absolutely, yes. Straight after PATS 2024 we began working on ranges to try to excite the trade again.”

Case Study No 3

Dog & Bond – Winner of New Starter Zone Award with Make-Your-Own Dog Treats (Cheese & Super Seaweed)

Avi Nagel, founder of Dog & Bond, said: “Winning the PATS New Product Award was a huge milestone for Dog & Bond. Having expert judges from the pet industry recognise our product was a strong signal that there’s real appetite for the kind of meaningful experiences we aim to create. For some, the idea of making treats at home might sound strange, but we believe it’s a joyful, healthy way to understand what we’re feeding our dogs. It meant the world to have the judges get that – and love it too.”

Do you think the award has helped to elevate your winning product in terms of exposure?

“Absolutely. As a young brand, having the PATS endorsement instantly boosted our credibility, especially with new stockists. We’re confident in our products, but when retailers see that we’ve been recognised at PATS, it opens doors and builds trust much faster.”

Have you used the award to promote the product?

“Yes, it’s front and centre in our brand story. We include the PATS Award in our marketing materials, trade decks, and even on our packaging. For customers and retailers alike, it’s a clear sign that our products aren’t just fun and healthy – they’ve been tried, tested, and celebrated by real experts.

Will you be entering this year’s New Product Showcase?

Definitely! We’ve just launched a pumpkin-based gut health supplement – an all-natural, prebiotic powder that supports digestion. Like everything we do, it’s designed to be simple, effective, and shelf-ready, making it a win for pet parents and retailers alike. I’m sure it will be a hit.”

A full list of entries to the New Product Showcase at PATS 2025 can be found at www.patshow.co.uk where retailers and buyers can register for free entry to the show.

Turning a dream into multi-million pound business

Newport-based The Lovely Gift Group, whose brands include Oh So Precious Pet Keepsakes, is on track for £2m turnover this year, as the firm celebrates 10 years this week...

Newport-based The Lovely Gift Group is on track for £2m turnover this year, as the firm celebrates 10 years this week.

It's a decade since mum of  three, Helen Davies, launched her first online store selling keepsakes, which include the pet brand Oh So Precious.

Helen’s son Zac, who is now 17 and in 6th form at South Hunsley, pressed the button to officially make The Lovely Keepsake Company live in June 2015.  Helen’s twins, Anya and Xavi, whose 10 weeks in Hull NICU as premature babies inspired the business, are now also at South Hunsley in Year 7 and all three children regularly help out at the company, now based in 4 industrial units in Newport.

Since launch 10 years ago, the business has grown exponentially, now with in-house personalised gift production, 6 further consumer websites, 2 retail brands, a wholesale business and the recent acquisition of personalised gift business, Always Personal.  Employing 14 team members the company has come a long way from the dining table in South Newbald, with a garage stacked high with boxes of stock.

Joined by husband Jason in 2020, Helen negotiated investment from Finance Yorkshire who acquired 30% of the business for £300,000.  This injection enabled the team to purchase machinery and open up procurement from the Far East, both of which helped transform the company’s scale capabilities and the opportunity to meet increasing demands from trade customers and consumers.

Helen said: “Ten years really has gone in a flash in both a family and business sense.  That little boy, who was so excited to press the launch button, now works for us every Monday in the warehouse outside of studying, and we have a whole team of terrific people now working with us.

“I honestly love every product we design and sale we make and I really do  have regular ‘pinch me’ moments when I literally see dreams become reality.  We still have so much more to do and so many plans yet to realise and I thank each and every one of our team members who give so much day in day out.  Being trusted with someone’s precious keepsakes really is a privilege that we all take seriously.

She continued: “Taking one day at a time but always looking 5 years ahead had helped to steer us towards what we always knew was possible, but felt like a dream for a long time.  We have remained true to our specialized area, researched our markets thoroughly and never taken a step without considering whether it was ‘Caring, Quality, Creative’.  That mantra has served us well and I look forward to pushing ahead for another 10 years.”

Family secures £175,000 funding deal to launch pet cremation business

A North East family has secured a £175,000 funding deal to launch a new start-up business dedicated to meeting the growing demand for dignified and compassionate pet cremation services...

A North East family has secured a £175,000 funding deal to launch a new start-up business dedicated to meeting the growing demand for dignified and compassionate pet cremation services.

Renwick Animal & Pet Cremation Services, based near Morpeth in Northumberland, secured the working capital from Reward Funding to purchase vital equipment needed to launch the company, which uniquely provides cremation services to pets and animals of all sizes across the region.

The family business, located on the 22-acre Southwitton House estate, is run by Jane Jobling-Purser and George Renwick, a mother and son partnership with extensive experience in both the farming and equine sectors.

Jane has dedicated her career to animal welfare, having run two holiday lets for six years and a successful yard for over 20 years. George has previously worked with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency, and more recently worked collaboratively with Peaceful Pets in Norfolk where he gained vital insights into the pet crematorium market.

Key to the finance deal being completed was the speed of lending, with Renwick able to use the working capital from Reward to purchase the equipment ahead of deadline and avoid any revenue loss through delayed openings.

The asset-based lender, which supports the growth of ambitious entrepreneurs, property investors and businesses both across the North East and nationwide, also demonstrated a pragmatic approach to funding risk. The deal with Renwick was largely based on strong projections and a solid business plan, with Reward ensuring the company didn’t have to go through any unnecessary red tape to secure the finance needed to accelerate its business plans.

George Renwick, Director and Co-founder of Renwick, said: “Having worked with pets and livestock all our lives, we recognised across the North East that many businesses and pet owners with larger animals were increasingly forced to travel as far as Derbyshire to access cremation services. Equipped with this knowledge and our passion for animal welfare, we invested in refurbishing the former equestrian centre located on the estate and converted it into the new pet and animal crematorium.

“The missing piece of the jigsaw was securing the finance in order to acquire the vital equipment needed to launch. As a new company, this was a real challenge since we had no previous trading history to present to banks and other lenders. Therefore, we were delighted that Reward was able to support us by recognising our long-term vision and plans for the business. The whole process moved at pace, ensuring we didn’t face the financial headache of having to delay the launch and put everything on hold.”

Aaron Tinmouth, Reward Funding’s North East Business Development Manager, added: “Being able to provide alternative finance to help launch a new business like Renwick underlines our entrepreneurial mindset and innovative approach to lending. Whilst this is a new venture for Jane and George, we made sure that we sat down with them to truly understand their plans, ambitions and their funding needs to ensure we could provide the right solution tailored to them.

“Many SMEs and property investors across the region are unfortunately denied finance by risk-averse traditional lenders, which stifles their business growth ambitions and negatively impacts the wider economy. It’s rewarding to help Renwick unlock this market opportunity and we are confident the business will now go from strength to strength.”

The deal between Reward and Renwick was brokered by Graeme Harrison from Newcastle-based Corporate and Commercial Business Solutions Group (CCBSG).
