Popular pet shop for sale in prime seaside location

The owners of Pettitt and Boo, a popular pet shop in the heart of the picturesque seaside town of Cromer on the North Norfolk coast, have announced that the business is being offered for sale.

Located on Church Street, directly opposite Costa Coffee and surrounded by a variety of popular, well-established shops, Pettitt and Boo offers an exceptional business opportunity with a loyal customer base and consistent revenue stream.

The shop boasts an impressive annual turnover of approximately £220,000, with a net profit of around £50,000.

The current owners are selling this successful business to focus on their expanding city-based stores and online operations, which specialise in raw dog food. The other three Pettitt and Boo stores (located in an around Norwich) and the warehouse facility in North Norwich are not being offered for sale.

Pettitt and Boo has built a strong reputation for its high-quality dog treats and accessories, attracting both local pet owners and tourists. The store's welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable staff ensure a steady flow of repeat customers and new visitors who discover the shop while exploring Cromer's charming streets.

Situated in a prime location, Pettitt and Boo benefits from high foot traffic and excellent visibility. This makes it an ideal investment for anyone looking to enter the pet retail industry or expand their existing business portfolio. Cromer is renowned for its beautiful beaches, vibrant community, and charming ambiance, adding to the appeal of this unique business opportunity.

Additionally, the business has significant scope for expansion. New owners could introduce services such as a grooming salon or a dog bed boutique, further enhancing the shop’s offerings and increasing its revenue potential.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact the current owners for more information and to arrange a viewing. This is a rare chance to acquire a profitable and beloved business in a highly desirable location, poised for continued success under new ownership.

Pettitt and Boo was established by husband-and-wife team, Adrian and Ali Pettitt, in 2018, with a focus on canine nutrition and healthy, natural treats for pets. They have established four stores in Norfolk, including the Cromer store, as well as a central Norwich warehouse. The business is one of the largest independent retailers of raw pet foods in the UK, employing 18 members of staff.

Dechra announces upcoming acquisition of Invetx

Dechra Pharmaceuticals Limited has announced the upcoming acquisition of Invetx, in line with long term strategy to be an innovation leader in companion animal health...

Dechra Pharmaceuticals Limited has announced the upcoming acquisition of Invetx, in line with long term strategy to be an innovation leader in companion animal health.

Invetx specialises in developing protein-based therapeutics for chronic conditions in companion animals, with a focus on monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Its proprietary biotechnology innovation platform combines industry leading technologies to develop species specific and half-life extended mAbs that are longer lasting than currently available products, effective, safe and affordable.

The acquisition secures an exciting pipeline of innovative products for dogs and cats which are highly complementary to Dechra’s broad portfolio of speciality therapeutics, and provides entry into the large and high growth mAbs market. It adds new technology capability, bolsters Dechra’s existing pipeline and provides a significant runway for future growth.

Jesper Nordengaard, recently appointed Chief Executive Officer of Dechra, said: "I regard this acquisition as hugely important for Dechra, marking the start of a new chapter in our growth. It demonstrates our ambition to create further points of differentiation and relevance with veterinarians and pet owners alike, confidence in our ability to deliver highly innovative new products, and capacity to execute large scale transactions at speed."

Dr. Jürgen Horn, Chief Executive Officer of Invetx, remarked: “Becoming part of the Dechra Group marks a significant milestone for Invetx. We set out to become a leader in creating protein-based therapeutics for companion animals and are delighted to progress our pipeline with an ambitious partner such as Dechra. Together, we have an exciting future as we work to bring differentiated and best in class monoclonal antibody therapeutics for dogs and cats to the market.”

Innovation in animal health, following the trend of human health, is increasingly focused on antibody-based therapies. Such therapies have targeted modes of action and are therefore often more effective, provide an extended duration of activity and have fewer side effects, all of which help to extend and improve the quality of life for companion animals while decreasing the care burden for pet owners.

Commenting on the Invetx business, Jesper added: “The half-life extension technology developed by Invetx allows for the generation of therapeutics that make treatment of chronic conditions far more convenient for pet owners and veterinarians through improved compliance. The pipeline of products currently being developed are all high value potential and will deepen our expertise in core therapeutic areas such as atopic dermatitis and osteoarthritis, allowing for synergistic product development, sales & marketing, and education efforts in the future.”

Guggenheim Securities, LLC is acting as exclusive financial advisor to Dechra, DLA Piper LLP (US) is acting as intellectual property advisor and Kirkland & Ellis LLP is acting as legal advisor. The acquisition remains subject to antitrust approval and other customary closing conditions.

Enrichment toy takes pet industry by storm

Play9 has announced that its revolutionary enrichment toy, the Roolo, is now available at over 150 Pets Corner stores nationwide...

Play9 has announced that its revolutionary enrichment toy, the Roolo, is now available at over 150 Pets Corner stores nationwide.

Celebrating this monumental achievement, the Roolo was named Pets Corner’s Product of the Month for July.

Redefining Pet Enrichment

The Roolo is transforming the landscape of pet enrichment by offering unparalleled mental and physical stimulation for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Unlike traditional toys, the Roolo is designed to engage dogs' natural instincts through a multifaceted approach that promotes scent work, problem-solving, slow feeding, and active play. Its scientifically designed shape allows for erratic movement, ensuring continuous fun, exercise, and enrichment.

What sets the Roolo apart is its ability to meet the diverse needs of dogs and their owners. It’s more than just a toy; it’s a versatile enrichment tool that can make a significant difference in the lives of dogs, especially those with health issues or in old age. The National Institute of Animal Health reports that enriched environments can increase a pet’s cognitive function by 30%, helping to prevent age-related cognitive decline.

The Roolo provides essential stimulation when physical activity like walks aren’t possible due to illness, injury, or extreme weather.

Join the Enrichment Revolution

The 'Enrichment Revolution' is redefining the way we care for our dogs, prioritising mental and physical stimulation as essential components of their well-being. This movement recognises that dogs need more than just physical exercise; they thrive on activities that engage their minds and instincts. Research from the University of Pennsylvania indicates that dogs who engage in regular enrichment activities exhibit a 40% reduction in anxiety-related behaviours.

By incorporating innovative tools like the Roolo, the Enrichment Revolution is enhancing the lives of dogs everywhere, offering solutions that cater to their natural behaviours, promote cognitive health, and provide meaningful engagement even when traditional exercise isn't feasible. This revolution is setting new standards in pet care, ensuring that every dog leads a fulfilled and enriched life.

Pets Corner Partnership

Pets Corner, a renowned family-run pet retailer with a legacy of excellence since 1968, shares Play9’s commitment to quality and animal welfare. This partnership is a testament to both companies’ dedication to providing superior pet products. With an extensive network of over 150 stores, Pets Corner is the perfect platform to introduce the Roolo to pet parents across the UK.

Dean Richmond, CEO of Pets Corner, stated: "It’s unusual to see genuine innovation in dog toys these days but The Roolo certainly has it. Our staff and customers think it is excellent."

“We’re beyond excited to see the Roolo in Pets Corner stores nationwide,” said Lee Bridges, Co-Founder of Play9. “This partnership marks a significant milestone for us, and being named Product of the Month is the cherry on top. We’re so glad that Pets Corner customers are loving the Roolo as much as we do.”

Known for their exceptional training programs and commitment to non-toxic, premium products, Pets Corner ensures that the Roolo will reach pet parents who demand the best for their dogs.

Pedigree Wholesale has extended its Cooper & Co range with two new lines to the dog treat range, which are crafted in Devon using only the finest quality ingredients sourced in the UK.

Introducing the new Dental Crunchy biscuit treats with Mint and Coconut, and the Fussy Semi-Moist biscuits with Salmon and Fennel. These new treats have been thoughtfully developed with the same stringent quality requirements as the rest of the range. Every pouch of Cooper & Co Treats contains no added salt, sugars, artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

Cooper & Co was developed in-house by Pedigree Wholesale to provide a perfectly balanced diet for Cooper, the dog owned by the company’s CEO, Steve Brown. The brand initially launched a premium Dry Dog Food range, then extended into Dog Treats last year. It’s always been really important to the family that Cooper is fed a simple and wholesome diet containing only the finest quality ingredients, grain-free and full of all the essential energy, nutrients, vitamins and minerals dogs need for a happy, healthy life.

The Dental Crunchy Biscuits are made with Mint, which is a great source of nutrients and helps to freshen dogs' breath. They are gently shaped and baked to ensure maximum flavour and also contain Coconut which is packed with antioxidants that help support the immune system. The Fussy Semi-Moist Biscuits contain Salmon, which is an excellent source of omega 3 & 6 that can help to support healthy skin & coat, and Fennel, which can help to support the immune system as it is a great source of vitamins and minerals.

Offering above average retailer margins, the new treat recipes retail for £4.99 and are sold in cases of 10. The new Cooper & Co Biscuit treats are available now through Pedigree Wholesale and are exclusively available to the specialist pet trade.

Donald Cooke to distribute popular Macahl ranges

Donald Cooke Ltd has announced a new partnership with Macahl (Mac Animal Health Ltd) to distribute the Oralade Active rehydration drinks and the Vets Menu Gravy ranges to the UK pet trade...

Donald Cooke Ltd has announced a new partnership with Macahl (Mac Animal Health Ltd) to distribute the Oralade Active rehydration drinks and the Vets Menu Gravy ranges to the UK pet trade.

Olya Hamill, Global Key Account Manager, said: “We believe that Donald Cooke is the right partner for us to drive visibility and sales of our brands across the UK to pet retailers."

Head of Business Development for Donald Cooke Ltd, Simon Lewis-Dale said: “We are delighted to add the Oralade Active and Vets Menu Gravy range to our growing range of brands we distribute alongside our own natural treat brand K9 Chew Co.

“One of our customers introduced us as they wanted to get hold of the product, and it all went very quickly from there.

“We sold out the initial stock on Pre Orders within two days, which is always a great sign and is a testament to our customers wanting to try something new and exciting, which these 2 brands certainly are.”

John and Anthony Mackle developed the first isotonic pet hydration formula called 'Dx' for sick and dehydrated pets in 2004.

Two years later JAM Animal Health was established, and the Oralade brand was launched. With its unique, highly palatable formula, Oralade quickly became the go-to hydration solution for veterinarians and pet owners, revolutionising how pets are cared for when sick or dehydrated. The business continued to innovate and grow, becoming Mac Animal Health Ltd (now known as Macahl) in 2015.

Oralade is now available in two expanding ranges: Advanced for veterinary-led animal care (Vet channel only) and Active for sporting and working dogs, with continuous product development in progress.

In 2023, the Vets Menu brand launched, bringing the scientific backing of Oralade to the healthy pet treat market. The debut of meal-enhancing gravy toppers provides a junk-free boost to your dog’s dining experience while promoting healthy bodily functions. The Vets Menu range is set to grow further with more healthy treats and cat-specific product development underway.

Macahl distribute to over 60 countries worldwide and saw Donald Cooke as the perfect partner to get to the independent retailer.

Trading for over 100 years, Donald Cooke Ltd is based in Sheffield and offers nationwide distribution to pet retailers across the country.

With a low £100 MOQ, for free delivery, they offer a broad range of their own branded dog treats under the K9 Chew Co, brand name, alongside brands such as Tick Twister, Frozzys, No More Plaque, Good Wood, Chewllagen and now Oralade Active and Vets Menu gravy.

You can contact them at info@donaldcooke.co.uk or call on 0114 2693901 for a price list.

Global pet economy to grow to $500 billion in revenue

The global pet industry will expand by more than 45% over the next six years, surpassing $500 billion by 2030, according to a new report from Bloomberg Intelligence (BI)...

The global pet industry will expand by more than 45% over the next six years, surpassing $500 billion by 2030, according to a new report from Bloomberg Intelligence (BI).

The surge will be driven by increasing pet ownership, particularly in emerging markets like China, robust sales in pet food, strong growth of health and welfare therapies, and the humanisation of pets.

BI expects the global pet food industry to expand nearly 7% this year and then about 5% annually to reach $146 billion by 2030. Food is the biggest ownership expense and limited elasticity allows suppliers to pass along higher costs.

In addition, the pet pharmaceuticals industry could expand to over $24 billion by 2030, from about $16 billion now, driven by favourable demographics, consumer spending and — most important — development of novel therapeutics. Pain, oncology and cardiology can spur innovation and the emergence of blockbuster products as companies continue to bridge findings from human health to pets.

The humanization of animal companions should also boost the industry. Brands including Gucci, H&M and Tommy Hilfiger have launched pet clothing lines to tap into the trend, notes BI, while the US pet Halloween costume market is estimated at $700 million, according to the National Retail Federation. More than three-fourths of the US pet apparel market is dominated by private label, data from Circana show.

Diana Rosero-Pena, Lead Consumer Analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, highlights the significance of these findings:"The pet economy is experiencing unprecedented growth, fuelled by the humanisation of pets and rising disposable incomes. Companies like Mars and J.M. Smucker are leading the charge in the pet food sector, ensuring consistent growth despite broader economic challenges. The resilience of this sector underscores its potential as a major economic driver over the next decade."

The report outlines several key factors contributing to this growth, including:

  • E-Commerce Strength to Continue: Investments from US digital native Chewy and, to a lesser degree, Amazon may help e-commerce grow as much as 87% to $58.4 billion by 2030. Free shipping can breed customer loyalty and expand e-tailers’ baskets.
  • China Growth to Top GDP: China's industry can expand at a compound annual rate easily eclipsing that of GDP. The country’s cat and dog population may exceed 156 million by 2030.
  • Supplies, Services Highly Elastic: Sales gains for supplies, equipment and services could remain slower than in other categories as they are the most at risk during economic downturns and high inflation. Greater investment in loyalty programs and other pockets of growth can aid customer stickiness.

Andrew Galler, Lead Analyst for Global Health Care at Bloomberg Intelligence, adds: "Innovations in pet healthcare are pivotal to the market's expansion. The development of new therapies and advanced diagnostic tools will not only enhance the quality of care but also drive significant economic value. As pets live longer, the demand for sophisticated healthcare solutions will continue to rise."

Limited new pet ownership and high elasticity during economic downturns would weigh on the supplies and equipment category. BI’s analysis finds that the global segment may grow 36% to $65.8 billion through 2030 (vs. 45% for food), with the US accounting for 44%, followed by Europe at 31%. Though the category is typically a smaller part of pet revenue for retailers than consumables, accounting for about 30%, it is more profitable.

Overall, the US will remain the biggest market and Europe may account for about a third of the market, though other regions may expand more quickly. BI’s scenario finds that China’s market could grow more than 50% to $49 billion, with Alibaba dominating e-commerce. Investments from US pure plays like Chewy could push e-tail up 87% to account for nearly 30% of the pet economy.

BVA launches new policy position on diet choices for cats and dogs

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is calling on the profession to support pet owners in choosing a healthy, sustainable diet for their cats and dogs...

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is calling on the profession to support pet owners in choosing a healthy, sustainable diet for their cats and dogs.

New BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession research reveals that many pet owners are opting for non-traditional diets for their cats and dogs, with 94% of companion animal vets reporting they have clients who feed a raw diet, 42% reporting clients who feed meat-free diets and 29% reporting they have clients who feed insect-protein in place of meat. However, the new data also revealed that many clients are not routinely discussing dietary choices with their vet, as 6 in 10 vets were unsure just how many of the cats and dogs they see are fed meat-free diets.

In a new policy position, developed by a panel of experts, BVA urged vets to have conversations with all cat and dog owners about what diet they have chosen and record nutritional histories and any resulting issues on their practice systems.

BVA President Anna Judson said: “We know that owners of cats and dogs are increasingly drawn to pet diets that reflect their own personal values and lifestyle choices, and this is leading to a surge in alternative approaches to pet food. We support owners making informed choices about what to feed their pets, but they must be aware that these choices play a pivotal role in the health of the animal and can also have a wider impact on human health and environmental sustainability.

“One of the key issues in these conversations is the lack of long-term, evidence-based research. If vet teams are to maintain our position as the ‘trusted voice’ in these conversations, it’s vital that we ask the right questions and also record as much data as possible so that we can understand the long-term impact of some of these newer diets.”

The policy position, launched today, does not attempt to determine the ‘best’ diet for individual pets but rather focuses on supporting pet owners to ensure they are meeting their pets’ nutritional needs as well as meeting their own lifestyle choices.

As well as urging the profession to improve record keeping and reporting, the BVA policy position recommends changes to veterinary education to include a new emphasis on the importance of nutrition in day one competencies for vets and nurses, and improved awareness of the need for supportive conversations with animal owners.

To support the profession in these conversations BVA intends to create a new public facing resource and to lobby for better labelling of pet food and better labelling and traceability of the animal by products that represent one of the major sources of protein in many cat and dog foods.

Anna said: “The issues around pet food are complex and with so much information available to pet owners from breeders, friends, online forums and other sources, we want to support all members of the vet team to feel fully confident in guiding their clients through dietary decisions. We hope that these recommendations and our upcoming resources will improve the information available to both clients and vets, supporting owners to make healthy, informed choices for their pets.”

Vet warns of dangers of exercising dogs in hot weather

With warmer weather finally arriving this summer, a leading veterinary charity is warning dog owners to be cautious when exercising their pets in the heat...

With warmer weather finally arriving this summer, a leading veterinary charity is warning dog owners to be cautious when exercising their pets in the heat.

PDSA Vet Nurse Gemma Renwick said: “We know how important exercise is to keep a dog’s body and mind healthy. However, in a nation where hot weather isn’t the norm, owners aren’t always aware of how to exercise pets safely to prevent overheating.

“While there is a danger of over-exercising in warmer weather, there are ways to keep your furry friend safe while being active in the heat."

1. Pick your time carefully

“Whether you are an early riser or a night owl, I would recommend walking your four-legged friend before 8am and after 8pm when it should be cooler, so that you’re not out and about when temperatures are at their peak. Take extra care to avoid the midday sun between 12pm and 3pm, as this is when your dog is most at risk of overheating. When out, keep to a slow and steady pace to reduce the risk of exhaustion, while still allowing them to enjoy the sights and smells of being outdoors. No matter how short or long the journey, remember to take a bottle of water and a bowl for them to drink from – and if it’s really hot, consider skipping the walk completely!"

2. Beware of hot pavements

“Roads, pavements and even sand can become very hot during the summer, so it’s important to exercise caution so that the pads of your furry friend’s paws don’t get burnt. Before taking your pooch out for a stroll, remember to check whether the surface is too hot by carrying out the ‘five second’ test. Simply hold your hand or bare foot on the floor for five seconds – if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your four-legged friend, and it’s best to leave their walk until the ground has cooled down."

3. Seek the shade

“When the temperature is high, think carefully about where you take your pet for their walk. Avoid open spaces such as fields and if you can, find a natural path for your summer walks; woods and forests are ideal, or stick to the shaded side of the street. Remember to take regular pitstops too, to allow your dog to rest – you’ll probably appreciate these breaks too."

4. Only take a dip with care

“Taking your dog for a swim might seem like the perfect solution to help them cool off – but remember, this still counts as exercise and you’ll need to make sure they don’t exhaust themselves. It’s crucial to keep water safely in mind – whether that’s the sea, lakes, rivers or swimming pools, and remember to never force your pooch to swim if they don’t want to. If you are letting your furry friend enter a body of water, make sure to pick a suitable place, such as a calm lake, dog-friendly beach, slow-moving river or private swimming pool, and never let them swim in dangerous waters such as canals, reservoirs, fast-flowing water or rough seas."

5. Chillout tricks

“There are a lot of fun and inventive things that you can do to help keep your pup comfortable on a hot day. Filling a shallow paddling pool or washing up bowl with cold water can give your dog a much-needed chance to cool their paws; just mind out for the splash zone. Creating a cool room for your pup to have time out if the weather becomes too much can also help – here, you can set up a fan or an area with damp towels or cool mats for them to lay down on while also freezing their toys can provide a great relief.

6. Heatstroke – symptoms and what to do

“If your pet starts showing any symptoms of heatstroke, such as heavy panting, seeming lethargic or confused, having excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, vomiting or diarrhoea, shaking, weakness, or even seizures you should start cooling them down immediately and contact your nearest vet. Never delay starting to cool your dog down. While contacting the vets, move your pet to a cool, shady area and allow them to stand on something cool like a wet towel, cooling mat or a tiled floor. Allow your pet to drink small amounts of water and pour cold water over them, tap water is fine. Also consider using a fan or allow a breeze if possible and continue cooling on the way to your vets.”

Award-winning retailer launches free poo bag giveaway

Award-winning retailer Jollyes will open its next new store at Unit 2, Grimshaw Park, Lower Audley Street, Blackburn tomorrow (Friday 26 July) with an important giveaway for dog owners across the UK...

Award-winning retailer Jollyes will open its next new store at Unit 2, Grimshaw Park, Lower Audley Street, Blackburn tomorrow (Friday 26 July) with an important giveaway for dog owners across the UK.

Inspired by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s campaign to encourage dog owners to do the right thing, Jollyes will offer the first 140 customers on opening day free ‘power poop’ bags that even come with a battery-style red reminder when the roll is about to run out.

The giveaway could help pet parents save money – one council is hiking its fine for dog fouling to £200 as part of a zero tolerance crackdown – but even if a council issues typical fixed penalties of £50, ignoring the demand means owners can be fined up to £1000 at court.

But the giveaway won’t just be for customers at its new Blackburn store – Jollyes is writing today to every council in the UK with a nearby Jollyes store to tell them that all of its 100-plus locations will also have 140 free poo bag rolls for the first customers to shop in store next Friday 26 July.

That means Jollyes’ UK stores will give out almost 225,000 free poo bags to customers next week.

Jollyes will take up residence in Blackburn close to Asda, B&M and Halfords in the former Mothercare unit and will offer a frozen raw food ‘shop-in-shop’ for pet parents who want to take advantage of Jollyes’ wide range of frozen food – rapidly becoming the most popular way for owners to feed their dogs.

Alongside the poop bag giveaway, there’s a big line up of other activity planned for opening weekend.

In support of Jollyes new partnership with the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA), three retired prison service dogs and a North West border force cocker spaniel will bite through a strong of sausages to formally declare the store open.

RPD Purdy, a cockapoo, RPD Orio a 14 year old labrador and RPD Digit, an 11 year old Collie and prison service handler Sarah Vinton alongside border force cocker spaniel Norman (age three and a half) and his handler Alanna Bayliss from Bolton will perform the opening ceremony alongside the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Councillor Brian Taylor.

The partnership with NFRSA runs alongside local fundraising at each of Jollyes 100-plus stores support, helping them support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family - the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.

Over the next 12 months, all Jollyes’ stores will be raising money for NFRSA with collections matched by Jollyes up to £20,000 that will help NFRSA support retired service animals and their owners.

On Friday, there’ll be goody bags available for the first 100 customers, stilt walkers and an opportunity for all customers to spin Jollyes’ iconic ‘Wheel of Fur-tune’ to win instant prizes.

On Saturday 27 July there’ll also be entertainment and music and customer gameshows alongside balloon modelling for kids with prizes to be won.

In addition to the raw food frozen ‘shop-in-shop’ Jollyes offers high quality private label pet food such as its own Lifestage, K9 and Rileys brands which offer a premium experience without a big brand price tag.

Jollyes has recruited a team of 12 in Blackburn which will be led by experienced Jollyes colleague Natalie Bentley who’s run stores in Ashton and across the country.

“We can’t wait to open our doors next week,” said Natalie.

“We’re already working hard to get the store ready and looking forward to giving pet parents in Blackburn a new alternative for their pets at home.

“We can’t wait to bring the kind of value and service we’re famous for, here to the heart of Lancashire.”

Jollyes has grown its store estate by 50% in three years and has had an remarkable start to 2024 winning new investment to supercharge its growth, being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for retailers under £250m turnover and making the Sunday Times’ list for the first time as one of Britain’s best big companies to work for.

Cultivated pet food given UK clearance

Meatly has received regulatory clearance to sell cultivated meat for pet food in the UK, making it the first in the world to get authorisation for this type of product...

Meatly has received regulatory clearance to sell cultivated meat for pet food in the UK, making it the first in the world to get authorisation for this type of product.

Gaining regulatory approval also makes Meatly the first-ever cultivated meat company approved for sale in any European country.

The public announcement follows a close collaborative process between Meatly and the UK’s regulatory bodies – the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

The relevant UK Government departments have ensured that Meatly complies with all necessary regulations, and Meatly has now passed APHA’s rigorous inspection process. Meatly will continue to adhere to APHA’s ongoing inspections.

As a result of this process, Meatly’s cultivated chicken for pet food can now be sold in the UK.

Beyond the approvals needed, Meatly has proactively prepared a comprehensive safety dossier and conducted extensive testing to demonstrate that its cultivated chicken is safe and healthy for pets. Testing included demonstrating that their cultivated chicken is free from bacteria and viruses, that the nutrients used to grow the cells are safe, and that the final chicken product is safe, nutritious, and free from GMOs, antibiotics, harmful pathogens, heavy metals, and other impurities.

Meatly is a registered feed business operator, and its production facility has now been approved by DEFRA and APHA to produce and handle its cultivated chicken. Meatly plans to launch the first samples of its commercially available pet food this year, making it the first cultivated pet food sold. Beyond these initial samples, Meatly’s primary focus will remain on cost reduction, and it will start scaling production to reach industrial volumes in the next three years.

Regulatory approval follows several significant milestones that have placed Meatly at the forefront of the cultivated meat industry. It is leading a new wave of cultivated meat start-ups that are proving there is a low-capital and fast route to market. Backed by £3.5m in investment, Meatly has achieved regulatory approval in under two years of operation and developed a protein-free media which costs less than £1 a litre, significantly reducing production costs. Meatly has also secured brand partnerships and production of its products with leading pet food brands.

Commenting on the announcement, Owen Ensor, Meatly CEO said: “Today marks a significant milestone for the European cultivated meat industry. I’m incredibly proud that Meatly is the first company in Europe to get the green light to sell cultivated meat. We are proving that there is a safe and low-capital way to rapidly bring cultivated meat to market.”

“We’re delighted to have worked proactively alongside the UK’s regulators to showcase that Meatly chicken is safe and healthy for pets. Pet parents are crying out for a better way to feed their cats and dogs meat – we’re so excited to meet this demand. We can now continue our mission to give consumers an easy choice – ensuring we can feed our beloved pets the real meat they need and crave, in a way that is kinder to our planet and other animals.”

Jim Mellon, Founder of Agronomics, an investor in Meatly, added: “Meatly’s regulatory approval is a landmark event for the industry. Through its technological innovation and close work with governing authorities, Meatly is helping prove that we can succeed in commercialising cultivated products for pets across the UK. Our pets consume huge amounts of meat every day and so this development can play a crucial part in reducing the emissions, resource consumption, and animal suffering caused by traditional meat production."

Ex-pro footballer launches pet wellness brand

Ex-professional footballer turned entrepreneur Neil Yadolahi has created an innovative pet nutrition range called Well Paws following the illness of his dog Alfie...

Ex-professional footballer turned entrepreneur Neil Yadolahi has created an innovative pet nutrition range called Well Paws following the illness of his dog Alfie.

The former Burnley FC centre-back has developed two ingenious ways to deliver these vital vitamins to pets – via syrups and chewable treats. They are set to launch late autumn.

Neil realised first-hand the frustration pet owners can face when seeking the best for their four-legged friends but often stubborn companions.

Fully aware of the difficulty of accommodating their selective eating habits, which can often result in missed nutrients crucial for their well-being.

“It can be exasperating for pet owners who only want the best for their cat or dog,” said Neil.

“Pets can be picky and set in their ways, so when they spot something foreign in their food – they’ll shun the dish – or simply eat around it and miss out on key beneficial supplements,” he added.

Neil and his WellPaws’ mission began in 2017 when he witnessed his own beloved pet, Alfie, suffering from chronic joint pains.

This inspired him to develop pioneering supplements tailored specifically for cats and dogs.

Witnessing Alfie’s remarkable improvement ignited a passion to help other’s precious pooches and moggies facing similar health challenges, leading to the birth of WellPaws.

Emphasising affordability and quality, WellPaws Supplements ensure high-grade nutrition, in-house PHD veterinarians, nutrition specialists, and a tech-proficient team to pioneer advanced supplement solutions accessible to all pet owners, reflecting Neil’s commitment to pets as cherished family members and setting his brand apart in a competitive market.

A past Burnley player, Neil now stands at the forefront of the supplement manufacturing industry, bringing his wealth of knowledge and innovation to both pet and human nutrition.

His diverse business portfolio and ventures have established a strong presence in manufacturing and sourcing as well as both the online and retail markets across the UK, Europe and Middle East, particularly excelling in the rapidly growing pet supplement sector.

Under his leadership, his company has become a trusted manufacturer for some of the largest pet supplement brands in the UK and Europe.

This experience has provided him with unparalleled insights into market dynamics and emerging opportunities within the industry.

Neil’s flagship product line, WellPaws Supplements, exemplifies his commitment to excellence and innovation.

“We take pride in ensuring the quality and efficiency of our products,” added Neil.

“Each line adheres to rigorous certifications, including GMP, FDA and ISO compliance standards. This means healthier pets and happier humans.”

Today, his latest innovation in supplement delivery is set to transform pet care.

Infused with tasty fish flavours, they contain key ingredients such as collagen and D3 for improved joint health and coat lustre, along with immune-boosting vitamin C.

All WellPaws Syrups and Chewables compositions have been meticulously formulated, vet approved and trial-based ingredients ensuring all formulas are clinically approved.

There is also calming magnesium-infused ZinPro Propath to reduce anxiety, and healthy gut bacteria to ensure things are running tickety-boo internally.

The four different syrups address a pet’s skin and coat, bone and joint, calming care qualities and boost their immune system.

Meanwhile, the chewable supplements which also support coats, joints, and mood – offers additional gut health.

And it is good news for those who are dual owners of dogs and cats too, as each essential compound can be administered to both – saving money and giving loving owners peace of mind.

The WellPaws range consists of Skin & Coat Syrup, Bone & Joint Syrup, Calming Care Syrup and an Immune Booster Syrup.

Additionally, the WellPaws best-selling chewable range come in a Hip & Joint Chewable variety, a Calming Care Chewable, Itch & Allergy Care, and a Gut Health-triple action biotic (pre, pro & post) Chewable.

“By prioritising affordability without compromising on quality, WellPaws Supplements make high-grade nutrition accessible for all pet owners,” added Neil.

“We are approaching the market with a “family and loving” ethos, ensuring that each product is developed to care for pets as cherished family members – which they are.”

The WellPaws range will be available to buy online and instore.
