Kennelpak establishes new partnership with US firm

Kennelpak, the pet specialist wholesaler, brand owner and distributor, has announced an exclusive distributor partnership with leading US-based pet foods and treat manufacturer, Primal Pet Group, to supply two new brands for the UK’s fast-growing natural occupier dog chew category.
Bringing together two pioneers and leaders in the thriving yak chew category on both sides of the Atlantic, the partnership capitalises on opportunities in the market and establishes Kennelpak as the go-to distributor and wholesaler in the UK.
Pioneers in the US, Himalayan Pet Supply, a leading brand in the Primal Pet Group portfolio, introduced The Original Himalayan Dog Chew to the market establishing a nearly $90 million natural occupier dog chew category. Under the agreement, Kennelpak, the original supplier of yak chews in the UK with market-leading YAKERS brand, will drive further growth by launching Primal Pet Group’s best-selling natural occupier dog chew brands, Himalayan Pet Supply and Yellow Yak.
By adding Himalayan Pet Supply and Yellow Yak brands to Kennelpak’s carefully curated portfolio, these new products, along with the award-winning YAKERS range, now serve the premium, quality and value natural occupier market. Further benefiting both retailers and pet parents, the new additions also add bacon, chicken and peanut butter flavour natural occupier dog chews in the UK.

As the trend towards the humanisation of pets continues, the new agreement builds on the expansion of Kennelpak’s own market-leading YAKERS brand into a value-added superfoods proposition. The new partnership leverages the UK’s growing natural occupier dog chew category that is outperforming the overall pet food market and where there is continual demand for new and innovative products and flavours from discerning pet parents looking to keep their pets healthy and stimulated with an alternative to rawhide.
Celebrating 50 years of pet food expertise, Kennelpak will benefit from Primal Pet Group’s extensive experience in the US where the Himalayan Pet Supply brands have captured 60 percent market share. With the US pet market generally considered to be three years ahead of the UK, its natural occupier dog chew category growing 13 percent year on year and a trend towards an increase in different flavours, this new agreement sees Kennelpak primed to be the distributor of choice for UK retailers looking to provide UK pet parents with greater selection.
Building on Kennelpak’s channel expansion strategy, the enhanced natural occupier dog chew portfolio will be available across a selection of specialist, online and grocery retailers, ensuring pet parents have ready access to these treats. Recent investment in an experienced sales team and support function has put Kennelpak in the perfect position to capitalise on these opportunities.
Commenting on the announcement, Kennelpak Chief Executive Officer, Claire Bayliss (right), said: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with Primal Pet Group, expanding our market-leading natural occupier dog chew offering in this exciting and growing category to provide a turnkey solution for retailers and pet parents in the UK. It is thanks to our unique positioning and our long-standing and trusted reputation within the pet sector that make us a natural choice for global brands looking to sell into the UK market and to meet the evolving needs of pet parents nationwide.”
Jon Balousek, CEO, Primal Pet Group, said: "With Kennelpak’s strong experience within the UK pet sector and our reputation for high-quality natural occupier dog chews that drive sales, this partnership is poised for success. Our mutual commitment to excellent products, as well as our deep understanding of the natural occupier dog chew category, make us ideal partners. We see tremendous growth potential for our brands in this market and look forward to pet parents in the UK discovering our Himalayan Pet Supply and Yellow Yak products.”
The new products are available in the UK from June 2024.

Pets Choice Ltd has the purchase of premium pet food brand Vet’s Kitchen from Pets’ Kitchen Ltd and will take over responsibility of sales from 1st June 2024.
Vet’s Kitchen will join Pets Choice’s other pet brands, which include Webbox, Bob Martin, Felight, TastyBone and B-Calm.
Pets’ Kitchen Ltd will now concentrate on the development of its clinical veterinary practices under their Vet’s Klinic brand.
A long-term collaboration agreement between the two companies will continue in support of both the Vet’s Kitchen and Vet’s Klinic operations.
Pets Choice supplies partners in the grocery, independent, and pet speciality sectors and eCommerce with high-quality products in a variety of formats. It plans to use this latest acquisition to grow its share of the premium and advanced nutrition sectors.
The sale also allows Pets Choice to increase its reach within the veterinary channel, and to benefit from Vet’s Klinic’s professional expertise, as the practices will continue to provide consultation services regarding new product development and recipe updates. This partnership-led approach to the sale also means that the two businesses can work together to deliver Vet’s Kitchen’s popular pet clubs activity in the future too.
Tony Raeburn, CEO of Pets Choice, said: “This is a fantastic acquisition for Pets Choice as we continue our drive in both product premiumisation and into the vet sector. We’re excited to onboard the Vet’s Kitchen team and pair their knowledge with our own.
“Our expertise in growing brands perfectly complements Vet’s Kitchen’s use of professional insight in its product formulations, and we believe this acquisition will act as a real partnership and deliver even better premium food for pets. The acquisition will also mean customers and listings alike will benefit from Pets Choice’s distribution network, making Vet’s Kitchen products all the more accessible to all. Vet’s Kitchen will complement our existing portfolio of growing brands entering us into the Premium sector which is extremely exciting.”
Managing Director of Pets’ Kitchen, Laura Shears, commented: “We have just opened our second, state of the art, ‘Vet’s Klinic’ veterinary practice in Reading and we have been seeking to divest our pet food division whilst maintaining an ongoing association. We are delighted that we can hand over the Vet’s Kitchen brand to Pets Choice and to continue with a collaboration agreement for the long-term benefit of both companies. We look forward to seeing the Vet’s Kitchen brand go from strength to strength under Tony’s fantastic team.”

Stars line up with dogs to back ‘Bark For Our Parks’
Charity led by The Prince of Wales urges UK pet trade to join in new campaign

Pet sector businesses, their teams and dog owners across the UK are being invited to take the lead in a new national campaign to safeguard Britain’s ‘precious’ parks and green spaces...

Pet sector businesses, their teams and dog owners across the UK are being invited to take the lead in a new national campaign to safeguard Britain’s ‘precious’ parks and green spaces.
The environmental charity Fields in Trust, whose President is The Prince of Wales, has launched a new month-long campaign, named ‘Bark For Our Parks’, which launched yesterday (Wednesday)..
The charity is supported by Prince William and a host of participating, high-profile celebrities and their dogs, organisers hope packs of supporters will turn out to raise the profile of the issue.
“Parks and green spaces are precious assets which are now under threat,” the charity’s CEO Helen Griffiths told Pet Trade Xtra. “We are fighting to safeguard them and we ask for support from both the public and the pet trade to protect these green hearts of our communities.”
Wherever you live in the UK, everyone is invited to take a walk with their dog around their local park or green space. When they sign up at www.barkforourparks.org, participants can apply for a free ‘Bark For Our Parks’ bandana for their dog.
Walkers are urged to seek sponsorship to raise funds for Fields in Trust, which works with landowners, community groups and policymakers to champion and support parks and green spaces through legal protection.
The independent charity, which celebrates its centenary next year, was founded as the National Playing Fields Association by King George VI. The late Duke of Edinburgh was its President for 64 years and it was Philip’s first patronage after he married The Queen in 1948. He could be found several days a week behind his desk at the charity’s office in Knightsbridge.

'STRONG SUPPORTERS’: Spaniel Monty and Georgia. (Picture credit Georgia Toffolo)
Among celebrities taking part next month will be ‘Made in Chelsea’ star and former ‘I’m A Celebrity’ winner Georgia Toffolo, 29, who will put her best foot forward in the ‘Bark For Our Parks’ campaign alongside her King Charles spaniel Monty.
Georgia was crowned Queen of the Jungle in 2017 and it is hoped many of her 1.8 million Instagram followers will also go ‘walkies’ with their dogs and support ‘Bark For Our Parks’ on social media, also using the hashtag #BarkForOurParks.
Georgia said: “The magic of both parks and green spaces to run, sniff and play is essential to dogs’ health and happiness. I'm thrilled to be working with fields in trust on their ‘Bark For Our Parks’ campaign and strongly support the work they do to protect thousands of hectares of parks and green spaces that I and my dog, Monty, treasure so dearly.”
Charity CEO Helen Griffiths added: “We would love to ask business owners in the pet trade to encourage their teams to join in. This country is facing a parks and green spaces emergency. Without protection, these precious places will continue to be developed on, and lost forever.
“Sadly, 6.1 million people do not live within a short walk of a green space and that number is growing. With a rising population and growing climate crisis, we need to act fast. We hope Britain’s dog lovers and park lovers will resonate with our campaign and help raise vital funds to continue our crucial work. We are so grateful to our wonderful group of celebrity ‘Bark For Our Parks’ Ambassadors for their support.”

‘HONOURED’ TO TAKE PART’: Natalie Rushdie and Pickle
Other celebrities taking part include: ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ star and media personality Gemma Collins, whose 2.2 million social media followers know she just became “Mummy” to her new pet whippet, Blue. Jazz singer Natalie Rushdie, daughter-in-law of Booker Prize-winning novelist Sir Salman Rushdie, taking part with her dog Pickle, and broadcaster, former ‘Children In Need’ host and BBC Radio 2 presenter Gaby Roslin.
Gaby said: “We all take our local parks for granted but they are so important for our health and wellbeing and I'm so proud to be working alongside Fields in Trust to support their fantastic work protecting these spaces for the future.
“’Bark For Our Parks’ is a great way for you and your dog to get involved and support the charity whilst doing something you love – a walk in the park!”
To support the campaign sign up at www.barkforourparks.org and find out more at www.fieldsintrust.org. To follow the campaign on social media, use #BarkForOurParks.

With the holiday season round the corner, the launch of Ready, steady, raw comes at a perfect time for pet owners that worry about not having the best nutrition available while on their travels with their pet. Ready in a matter of minutes, serving Ready, steady, raw is as simple as shaking up the bag to evenly distribute the flavours, measuring out the recommended amount, adding lukewarm water or a little bone broth to rehydrate, leaving to stand for five minutes, and then dinner is served.
The meals come combined with chicken and beef. Chicken is an excellent source of protein, B vitamins, and is lean too, while beef is packed full of iron, zinc, and selenium, which all combine to support your dog’s overall health.
Bella & Duke has also added green lipped mussels, a superfood which is naturally high in omega 3, ensuring healthy skin, coat, and joints too. Finally, for a dose of fibre, a boost of vitamins, and antioxidants too, carrots, apples, cranberries, chia seeds and flaxseeds are added into every bite. These boost the immune system, work to improve and aid digestion, provide vitamin C, support eye health, and more.

The introduction of Ready, steady, raw is something that supports us on our journey to do right by our pets and continue to offer nutritionally complete, species-appropriate meals no matter the circumstance. With the holiday season soon around the corner we’re excited to see our customer’s reaction to the new add on as we champion making raw feeding as convenient as possible to give our pets the healthy, happy and long lives they deserve.”

Animal stars are at the forefront of a full scale billboard campaign in Manchester's Media City this month, which is designed to promote animal welfare on film sets.
The animals, including Chilli, who stars as Linda Biscuits in Channel 4's Late Night Lycett, are being beamed onto a giant billboard at the Salford film mecca to promote Vet on Set, which shadows animals which take part in TV and film work.
In conjunction with sister company Animal Direction, which provides animal talent for productions, the billboard is stopping traffic in the Manchester film and TV hotspot.
Along with other animal stars, Chilli took part in a special video advert for the Vet on Set business that her owner Veterinary nurse Rachel Bean helped to found and co-runs.
Vet On Set works with the film industry to ensure that animal welfare is upheld while filming on some of the nation's favourite TV shows takes place.
Rachel, who founded the business with partner Davina Hamilton-Maddox, said: "Everyone loves seeing animal stars on TV and at the cinema, but those animals are like any actors, they need to be kept happy, well cared for and comfortable or they will not reach their full amazing potential.
"Vet on Set is something that we are really proud of, and the animals that we meet are really amazing, from seagulls to llamas and spiders it's wonderful the range of animals who take part in these productions, we love it, and so do the animals thanks to their welfare being our top priority."
Any media production working with an animal model or actor during a TV commercial, show, film or online video is responsible for their safety and welfare.
Vet on Set provides qualified professionals via a UK-wide network, who provide outreach, advice and shadowing on sets which have included films, TV and adverts.
Rachel added: "We hope to spread the word even more by producing this advert, but also to remind those in charge about their responsibilities with regard to the animals that they hire for their productions.
"There is no reason why animals shouldn't take part in these things, but the right support must be in place."

Founded in 1974 as a one-man business by the Dane Bonnik Hansen, the company has developed into the European market leader for pet accessories. TRIXIE products now hang, stand and lie on all continents. This year, the North German company is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is really letting it rip at Interzoo and afterwards.
"After the reunification of Germany in the 1990s, we experienced an incredible expansion and were able to successfully accompany the changes in the industry," says Managing Director Volker Haak, who began his training as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant at TRIXIE in 1985. At that time, the team comprised 7 employees. Today there are almost 600 from 27 different countries, who sell 6,500 products for dogs, cats, small animals, birds and reptiles to wholesalers and retailers in the office and in the field.
With the move to Tarp in 2002 and the constant expansion and extension of warehouse and office capacities, the TRIXIE site now covers approx. 98,000 square metres with a storage area of 52,000 square metres for approx. 90,000 pallet spaces and 48,000 containers in shuttle systems.

What has led to this consistent success and steady growth?
"There were various factors," reveals Bonnik Hansen. “Good margins for the specialised trade and an attractive price-performance ratio for end consumers. Goodwill when it came to complaints. Reliability and appreciation in our dealings with each other. These are still important values that are firmly anchored at TRIXIE today.“
"Our approach to the product range has also changed and been reorganised," explains Dirk Jessen, also Managing Director and responsible for purchasing. In the past, it was primarily merchandise that was delivered and redelivered at TRIXIE, but today there is an almost 20-strong product management team with experts from the fields of design, veterinary medicine and dog training ready to continuously develop the range with a focus on animal welfare and sustainability.
What else do specialist customers appreciate about TRIXIE?
"Our speed and high delivery capacity," says Jan Petersen, Head of Intralogistics. "We regularly invest in this, e.g. 15 million euros in a fully automated high-bay warehouse, most recently in the expansion of the shuttle systems and packing stations." Speaking of investments - the profits are reinvested to secure the site and further develop the company.
Exports play an important role in the development of sales: whereas in 2004 around 50 countries were supplied, accounting for 30% of total sales, this figure has now risen to more than 100 countries with a share of 60%. "The main reasons for this are the expansion of direct sales with our own field sales teams in Austria, France, the UK and Benelux as well as the continuous expansion of wholesale activities with sales partners on all continents," says Boy Tadsen, Head of Wholesale Export Sales, explaining the development.

A concept full of proximity
Perhaps precisely because Tarp is a little "off the beaten track" at the upper edge of Germany, there is constant movement in the direction and strategy of Trixie.
An extensive process involving market research and the development of a guiding principle was launched in 2019: Friends for life.
"This suits us in many ways," explains Marketing Manager Claudia Menzel. "Our range is so extensive that it accompanies pets and owners in all situations in life, from birth to old age. But we are also friends when it comes to our employees, customers and suppliers. We like to describe ourselves as down-to-earth. Here, everyone is on first-name terms and our dealings are friendly and at eye level.
The result is a concept full of personality that is approachable, likeable and cheerful but also conveys modernity and clarity. Visually represented in an optimised logo, imagery and packaging design. The "eternal blues" are now available in shops with a fresh and category-specific colour scheme.
"A modern, striking appearance that works as a whole and radiates emotion - we're looking forward to it," says Claudia Menzel.
Trixie will be presenting the concept for the first time at Interzoo in Nuremberg. The first packaging in the new design will be delivered from May/June.

Leading dog accessory manufacturer, EzyDog, has revealed that it will be making a return to Goodwoof on 18th and 19th May, to display its fantastic range of products for man’s four legged friends.
EzyDog is a global market leader in the pet accessory industry that offers an immense range of leads, collars, harnesses and even, life jackets and backpacks!
Goodwoof is a dog event like no other, so is a prestigious must-attend event for every dog owner’s calendar, held at the Goodwood Estate in Chichester.
EzyDog has been a regular supporter of this event. It provides the company with an ideal opportunity to showcase its range, all of which are premium quality, durable and comfortable and offers solution-based products that strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners. Available in a huge range of colours and finishes, the EzyDog stand at Goodwoof 2024 will feature its most popular ranges, with an emphasis on this prestigious dog event.
Guy Ellis, Director for EzyDog UK, said: “Goodwoof is one of those events that everyone looks forward to, it’s fun, sociable for you and your dog and allows you to interact with people who all love dogs: it’s a no brainer for us to exhibit there.
“We pride ourselves on the quality and innovation of our products, as we design everything with the dog at the forefront. It assures them protection, as well as being comfortable and it also provides the dog with a sense of freedom.
“Being able to show customers how our products work is important and, as many dog owners can understand, making sure you’re buying the right size (and colour!) is vital. While we have size guides and videos on our website, there’s something to be said for holding the product in your hands to feel the quality and putting it against your dog to see the fit.
“Goodwoof gives us the perfect opportunity to provide this service to customers. Our dog-adoring staff know the skill of looking at a dog and knowing what size harness and collar they’ll need. I’m sure owners will find our staff incredibly helpful!
“So, we’d love to invite owners and of course, their dogs, onto our boutique at Stand 3, located between the Wellness Stage and Active Sports Arena. We’d be more than happy to discuss what products are the best for you, your dog and your lifestyle.”

Last year’s Pet of the Year winner, assistance dog Belle with owner Amee Tomkins baby Olly.
Leading pet emergency service Vets Now has unveiled its search for the 'Pet of the Year'.
Nominations are open to anyone and organisers are calling on vets and nurses from across the profession to send in nominations
A key campaign in Vets Now’s consumer marketing plans, the successful awards are now in their third year.
The awards look to shine a light on the special bond between pets and their owners and the brave stories from animals across the UK. Previous award winners have been support dogs who have helped transform the lives of their owners - providing a lifeline of support and companionship.
Vets Now were able to drive a 300% uplift in entries to the awards last year through a successful marketing and PR campaign. The campaign garnered over 100 pieces of press coverage in regional, national titles and international outlets with the like of the BBC, Daily Mail, Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch and the New York Post all covering the story.
New for 2024, Vets Now has partnered with multi-award-winning national charity StreetVet for this year’s ‘Pet of the Year’ Awards.
For every valid entry received, Vets Now will donate £1 to the charity. StreetVet provides free essential veterinary care and services to the pets of those people experiencing homelessness, who may otherwise have to go without the treatment they need and deserve.
The winning nomination of Pet of the Year will receive a £500 voucher to spend on a pet friendly getaway at PetsPyjamas, a bespoke ‘Pet of the Year’ trophy and a personalised bundle of vet-recommended pet treats.
Rike Jones, Director of Marketing at Vets Now, said: “As the country’s leading emergency vets and pet equivalent to A&E, our vets and nurses treat and care for thousands of brave pets every year so we were well placed to launch ‘Pet of the Year’ awards. Not only do the awards shine a light on the remarkable animal bravery that our clinicians see every day and night but are a celebration of our wonderful teams and their dedication to be there for pets in their greatest time of need.
“Back for a third year, the Vets Now ‘Pet of the Year’ Awards provide a brilliant opportunity to nominate pets that deserve some extra-special recognition. From cats that may have made a miraculous recovery, remarkable dogs that have shown resilience, to bunnies that have been outstanding companions – we are looking forward to celebrating the important role pets play for so many people across the UK.”
Collette Sheaff, Head of Marketing at StreetVet, said: “StreetVet is delighted to have been chosen as the charity partner for Vets Now ‘Pet of the Year’ 2024 awards. The donations that we will receive from Vets Now through people nominating their pets will help StreetVet continue our vital work in providing free veterinary care to the pets of those experiencing homelessness across the UK. By helping the pets, we are helping their owners too. Unfortunately, the need for our services continues to rise significantly, especially since the cost-of-living crisis. Funding is crucial in allowing us to meet this increase in demand, so all the funds raised will have a significant impact in helping us to continue the work we do.”
Last year’s awards saw record entries, with overall winner, Staffordshire Bull Terrier Belle, crowned after her remarkable story stood out to the Vets Now judging panel.
The UK’s first ‘doggy midwife’, as a trained assistance dog Belle helped to transform the life of her owner Amee Tomkins, from Milton Keynes
Having helped Amee gain confidence to become a mum, Belle was the first dog allowed into the hospital labour ward at Milton Keynes University when she gave birth to son Olly last May.
Winner of Vets Now Pet of the Year 2023, Amee Tomkins said: “When Belle won, I couldn’t believe it! I was so proud of her, and I was so happy her hard work had been recognised. Since winning Vets Now Pet of the Year we have been in many magazines, news articles and papers. We have also been on the TV. We were invited to work with the Kennel Club charitable foundation for their “dogs with jobs” project where we went to famous photographer Rankin’s studio and had a shoot which was then displayed in the London Saatchi gallery!”
Owners can nominate their own pets, or the public or veterinary profession can nominate pets they know or have treated.
The awards will be open for nominations until 6th May 2024.
Two runners up will also be chosen, each receiving a £100 voucher and a hamper of vet-approved treats.

The British Independent Retailers Association has said more needs to be done to protect shop owners, workers and shoppers following troubling statistics released by the ONS.
The association, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, said the figures show how serious the situation now is.
John Halliday, Marketing Director for Bira said: "The latest ONS crime figures paint a troubling picture for independent retailers and businesses across the UK. The 37% increase in shoplifting highlights the significant challenges faced by our sector. Retail crime not only inflicts financial losses but also poses a grave threat to the safety and well-being of shop staff and customers."
Bira also recently ran its own survey which further exposes the harsh realities endured by those working in retail. The survey revealed that a staggering 35.5% of individuals had experienced verbal abuse within their shops. Moreover, incidents of physical abuse remain alarmingly high, with an increase in shopkeepers facing violence, including threats with weapons such as needles, knives, and even instances of hammers being thrown at them. Shockingly, 70% of those physically assaulted opted not to report the incidents to the police.
Mr Halliday added: “It's imperative that urgent action is taken to address this concerning trend and ensure the security of both businesses and their employees and customers. Bira has been trying to tackle this issue for a long time and will continue to work with the Home Office and police forces to better protect businesses, their owners, and people who work in the shop.”
Bira urged authorities to take immediate and decisive action to combat retail crime, including increased police presence in retail areas, improved reporting mechanisms, and enhanced support for victims. The association remains committed to advocating for the safety and security of independent retailers across the country.

Hector’s hot on the heels of his ancestors!

CSJ’s agents are a clever lot, with most combining their canine hobbies such as showing, agility, gundogs or sled dog racing with supplying CSJ to fellow competitors and contacts.
Debra Harker of Ettrick Gordon Setters is a great example – she’s been involved in showing dogs for over 40 years and says: “Although I’m one of CSJ’s smaller distributors I sell virtually a full range of their dog food. All my customers think CSJ is the best food ever and their dogs look amazing on it. They can’t understand why people would use anything else.”
Her current dog, Hector (Ch. Hernwood Achilles at Ettrick) now has 10 CC’s and 6 RCC’s, after winning another RCC at the breed Championship Show in April.
Hector’s direct ancestor (Debra’s first Gordon Setter) Sh Ch/Ir Sh Ch Hernwood Crystal Graphite became the first male English/Irish Champion and became top male in the breed with 21 CC’s and 17 RCC’s so Hector has had a hard act to follow.
Debra says: “Super proud of Hector and how good he looks, all down to CSJ which he has been on since a puppy.”
He had a brilliant start to his career with 6 x Best Puppy In Breed, including 2 breed shows and Crufts 2018, and became top Gordon in the country, but then came Bath Ch show where, at his first show in Junior, Hector won his class and then went on to win Reserve DCC. It was certainly a day to remember for Debra as it is unusual for such a young dog to take such high awards.
Debra commented, “Hector is as ever fuelled on CSJ’s CP21. Looking fabulous!”
Who knows how close he’ll get to his stunning ancestor’s tally … but one thing’s for certain, both he and his proud owner are having lots of fun along the way.

Award-winning pet retail chain Jollyes will be offering cheaper vet services when it opens its newest shop – the 102nd store in its portfolio – in Northampton tomorrow (Friday).
The store in an old Furniture Warehouse unit on Towcester Road will include a Community Pet Clinic that offers vet services such as microchipping and vaccinations at much lower prices than traditional vets.
Vets accredited by the Royal Veterinary College will offer transparent and low pricing on essential services that pet owners need.
Primary course vaccinations for dogs and cats are available in Jollyes’ community pet clinic for £33 covering both doses and annual boosters for £25. Microchipping, already compulsory for dogs and mandatory for cats in England from June, start at just £13.
The government through the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) is already investigating the top six vet chains for possible overcharging and anti-competitive practices that may be leading to pet parents paying far more than they need for vet services.
As part of that investigation, Jollyes provided its own evidence to the CMA about vet pricing in Northampton. While some vets were reticent to give prices, those that did were significantly higher than those offered in Jollyes.
A microchipping service that costs £13 at Jollyes was as high as £30 at one local vet, and the price differential on kitten and puppy vaccinations was even more stark. Both necessary doses are a combined £33 at a Jollyes’ community pet clinic but as high as £98 at another vet.
When it opens, Jollyes’ commitment to value to Northampton pet parents will go well beyond the clinic service it provides.
The new Jollyes store will have a raw food frozen ‘shop-in-shop’ alongside high quality private label pet food such as its own Lifestage, K9 and Rileys brands which offer a premium experience without a big brand price tag.

Jollyes has recruited a team of 12 in Northampton, including manager Andrew Bartlett who joins the pet retailer from Topps Tiles.
For the proud dad of two Labradors, Rocky and Raven, looking after pets runs in the family. Andrew’s mother-in-law runs an animal rescue centre, the source of his two labs and three cats Larry, Lana and Luna.
Andrew got married on 6 April but is delaying his honeymoon so he can open the store.
Performing the grand opening tomorrow will be Mayor Cllr Stephen Hibbert and Mayoress Liz Coxalong. There’ll be animal-themed stilt walkers and the Jollyes mascot to meet and greet customers with free goodie bags for the first 100 customers.
The following weekend on Saturday 4 May, there’ll also be live entertainment with prizes, Jollyes’ iconic ‘Wheel of Fur-tune’ with on-the-spot instant wins and balloon modelling for the kids.
“We’re already working hard getting the store ready for opening at the end of the month so we can give pet parents in Northampton a new alternative for their pets at home.” said Jollyes regional manager Natalie Bentley.
“With a successful store in Kettering, we know how much people in Northamptonshire love their pets, so Andrew and his team can’t wait to bring the kind of value and service we’re famous for, here to the heart of the county.”
When open, Jollyes’ Northampton store will be its 102nd, capping off an amazing few weeks for the retailer as it won new investment to accelerate its store growth and then being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for businesses in the category for retailers turning over less than £250m.

Nutriment, a pioneer and innovator in the field of raw pet food, has announced a rebrand in response to the ever-evolving landscape of raw pet feeding.
Founded in 2013, Nutriment has spent over a decade developing premium raw pet food recipes, driving real change in the raw pet food market, and delivering accessible raw food solutions to customers across Europe.
Having teamed up with design experts and market researchers, Nutriment has meticulously combined simplicity, transparency, and sophistication to produce branding, packaging and POS materials that truly embody the Nutriment ethos. Additionally, feedback obtained from the customer research phase, which concentrated on product clarity, food presentation, brand values, overall attractiveness, and positioning within the raw food category, identified powerful insights into what customers want and need from their raw pet food provider in 2024 and beyond. The result has been a design where customers can immediately ascertain the quality of each meal and its ingredients, the ease of feeding, and the reliability of the well-established Nutriment brand, from the moment they first observe the pack on a shelf.
“We’ve spent a considerable amount of time evaluating the ever-evolving raw pet food market and landscape and drilling down into the drivers of today’s pet owners, in order to reimagine the Nutriment brand to align with these findings,” comments Ryan Winwright, Head of Commercial at Nutriment.
“We’ve always prided ourselves on being an agile, dynamic and responsive business with the fundamental aim of provided first-class raw nutrition for pets in accessible ways for pet owners. Nutriment 2.0 will redefine raw pet food and raw pet feeding and we’re incredibly excited to see this take place.”
Leveraging the depth and quality of the insight gained through the market and customer research during the branding redesign project, Nutriment has also announced some exciting new product innovations which will be released to the marketplace in the next three months. Nutriment’s core portfolio of recipes has expanded over its 11-year operation to maintain its position as a pioneer in the field. This has included innovative products such as: Support - recipes specifically designed to provide nutritional support for ongoing health concerns; and Just – one ingredient, complementary meal solutions for supporting at-home meal preparations.
Retailers will start seeing rebranded Nutriment packaging and POS materials from June 2024, following a website refresh in May.
Nutriment’s new-look branding and packaging will be presented at Interzoo 2024 between May 7th and 10th in Nuremburg. To be the first to see, head to The Nutriment Company (formerly Voff) stand in Hall 5 (stand 5-342, 5-442). Visitors of the show will be able to find out more about the rebrand, launch and future plans for the Nutriment business. Not attending Interzoo this year? Renewed boost to international interest in PATS
PATS 2024 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – is set to have a strong international presence with a growing number of pet buyers and exhibitors from around the world expected to attend the new three-day show taking place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October...

PATS 2024 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – is set to have a strong international presence with a growing number of pet buyers and exhibitors from around the world expected to attend the new three-day show taking place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October.
In a further move to create more interest with international buyers, the PATS team will be travelling to Nuremberg in Germany next month to exhibit at Interzoo in the British Pavilion. PATS will also have a presence at Superzoo in Las Vegas in August.
“Our primary aim for exhibiting at international shows is to meet, talk to and encourage international retailers and distributors to come to our show,” said Gordon Thomas, of Impact Exhibitions & Events, organisers of PATS.
“We know that UK pet products sell very strongly around the world and representatives from international pet companies can see the advantage of meeting up with British suppliers all under one roof.
“They agree that PATS is the perfect destination to discover what’s new in the market for the year ahead, and an ideal opportunity to talk to UK-based manufacturers and suppliers.”
Gordon added: “We will be working closely with trade association PetQuip on a programme to identify key European pet product buyers and invite them to visit PATS.
“We ran a similar Inward Mission programme with PetQuip pre-Covid and it was highly successful, attracting buyers from across Europe, including Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland.”
At the Interzoo show Gordon will promote the new three-day PATS 2024 which is the biggest ever in the show’s 16 years. With five months still to go, more than 260 brands have already signed up to exhibit and the final figure is expected to be over 300.
PetQuip’s Trade Federation Manager Susan Fairley is pleased to be supporting PATS 2024 in guaranteeing renewed interest from international buyers. She said: “The new three-day timeline will add value for both UK and international buyers. The last day of the Telford show last year was notably busy right up until the end, so it’s clear that the current visitors will welcome more time to complete their visit. For international buyers, the extended show days will make their trip more beneficial.”
Barcelona-based Rob James, of Petwork Marketing, sources UK-manufactured products for a network of 50 stores across Spain and has attended PATS in the past with partner and pet shop owner Mireia Sabate De Vale. He said: “I will certainly attend PATS for a minimum of two days and probably all three. A well organised trade fair is vital for our company. It gives us the opportunity to not only conduct a great deal of business, but it also facilitates the introduction to many new products that we would otherwise struggle to find the time to see. I am delighted the show has grown into a three-day annual event and that even more manufacturers and distributors will be able to exhibit. It will prove to be a good use of our time and resources.”
A full list of exhibitors can be found on the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk where visitors can also register to attend for free.

PetQuip has announced that entries are now welcome as the association’s prestigious awards are launched.
Reflecting the dynamism of the UK petcare sector, the annual awards recognise and reward the energy, achievement and innovation realised within the pet product trade over the last year.
The winners of the PetQuip awards will be announced at the gala dinner, which takes place on Monday 30 September at Telford International Centre, alongside PATS, the pet and aquatics trade show.
The evening is a chance for networking, celebrating and congratulating success for everyone in the sector. In 2023, over 230 suppliers and retailers learned who the winners were while enjoying a drinks reception, three course meal, refreshments and dancing and music afterwards.
The 15 awards include categories for product, marketing, retailers, suppliers, sustainability and individual achievement.
New categories for this year include rising star, employee of the year and best marketing campaign, with the UK retailer award now being split into independent and multiple retailers.
Entry is free and companies can enter more than one category. Entry is online via the PetQuip website. Entries close on Thursday 27 June, finalists will be announced in August and the awards will be presented at the dinner on Monday 30 September.
“The PetQuip Awards evening is a well-established date in the UK pet industry’s calendar, not only because of the exceptional accolade that winning an award can bring, but also as a lively party for everyone involved in this buoyant and innovative sector.
“Many of the firms who have won awards previously have reported back to us on the value of winning, which shines a spotlight on the company, enhancing their profile and potentially boosting sales”, said organiser Susan Fairley.
Award sponsors confirmed so far include Noble Futures, Pedigree Wholesale, SUPERZOO, Zoomark, PATS, CIPS, Law Print and Packaging, James & Steel, Group55 and Petface.
