Pet firm told to remove 'unsubstantiated' dog bed claims from promotional material

A pet accessories company has been told to remove marketing material claiming that its beds reduced stress or anxiety. The ruling against Bella&Toby was made by the Advertising Standards Authority, the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media...

A pet accessories company has been told to remove marketing material claiming that its beds reduced stress or anxiety. The ruling against Bella&Toby was made by the Advertising Standards Authority, the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media.

The ASA looked into three separate instances – a paid-for Facebook ad, a Facebook page, and a website ad – after receiving a complaint. The complainant, who understood that separation anxiety could not be addressed by the use of a comfortable bed, challenged the efficacy claims for the product.

In response to the complaint, A&T International Ltd, the parent company of Bella & Tony, said that the round shape of their bed helped the dog sleep in a ‘donut position’ and that this is comforting for dogs. They provided a link to a website for a third-party mattress manufacturer. The website cited a clinician in veterinary medicine who explained that dogs sleep in this position in order to protect their internal organs.

Bella&Toby also said that if a blanket is placed over the bed, then this can make the dog sleep in ‘the burrower’ position. The same website cited a veterinary consultant who said that burrowing could be a way for a dog to take a relaxing break from keeping watch.

Bella&Toby understood that the thick layer of fur on the bed could remind the dog of sleeping next to their mother. They said that the soft padding gave the dog the feeling of sleeping on a cloud.

They provided a testimonial from a customer which stated that the bed was very good quality and attested that their dog goes straight to the bed when there are fireworks.

The ASA considered that consumers would understand from the ads that the dog bed reduced or eliminated separation anxiety.

In its ruling the ASA stated: “The CAP Code required marketers to hold documentary evidence to prove claims that consumers are likely to regard as objective and that are capable of objective substantiation.

“We assessed the evidence provided by Bella&Toby. The links provided were for a third-party mattress manufacturer, and a general interest website about dogs. The information explained the opinions of a veterinary clinician and consultant on the effect on dogs of sleeping in various positions.

“However, although it provided general context, the evidence was not focused on the use of Bella&Toby’s dog bed. It was therefore insufficient to support the claims under investigation. We also considered the customer review was the subjective view of an individual. While representative of their experience, it was not the type of robust evidence required to support objective, scientific claims.

“Because we had not seen evidence that the dog bed shown could reduce or eliminate anxiety in dogs, we concluded that the efficacy claims for the product had not been substantiated and were likely to mislead.”

The ad breached CAP Code (Edition 12) rules 3.1 (Misleading advertising) and 3.7 (Substantiation), and 12.1 (Medicines, medical devices, health-related products and beauty products).

The ads must not appear again in their current form. The ASA told A&T International Ltd t/a Bella&Toby not to claim that their beds reduced stress or anxiety unless they held adequate substantiation.

Dog training business gets 'paws up' from Theo Paphitis

Pup Talk, an innovative dog training business from West London, is celebrating after winning an award from TV star and entrepreneur Theo Paphitis...

Pup Talk, an innovative dog training business from West London, is celebrating after winning an award from TV star and entrepreneur Theo Paphitis.

Founder, Niki French helps stressed dog parents with fun and effective dog training, in-person locally and online.

She won Dragon’s Den star Theo’s Small Business Sunday award in late November and was presented with her certificate at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday.

Niki, 54, wrote the best-selling book STOP Walking Your Dog, created #dontwalkyourdogday (2nd April) and hosts Pup Talk The Podcast. She also provided 1-2-1 training and an online membership community so that stressed pet parents can learn how to effectively train their dog.

In the last 18 months, over 2,600 copies of STOP Walking Your Dog have been sold and Pup Talk The Podcast has nearly 12,000 downloads. #dontwalkyourdogday went viral last April 2nd hitting 2 million mentions.

She said: “Many dog parents are struggling with good quality, affordable training help after going through lockdown with new or existing dogs. It’s really important people are able to get the help that they need so that they can have dog that is calm and happy.

“Through my membership, book and free podcast I am helping thousands of dog lovers. People can play effective training games at home with their dog to grow the skills they are lacking. It’s amazing to have my hard work recognised by Theo.”

“Dog training isn’t something to tick off a list as done. Dogs’ needs change throughout their lives and having access to training at any time and a friendly community can be a lifesaver. But working 1-2-1 with a dog trainer isn’t something everyone can afford or have time for; my membership means people are supported whenever they need help with their dog’s behaviour.

During the pandemic, the dog population went from 9.5 million to 12.5 million and in March 2020 face-to-face training and classes had to cease. Millions of dog parents needed help with the new lockdown dogs.

Existing dogs also had to cope with changes like their humans suddenly being home a lot more but unavailable due to working online. And then the house was suddenly empty again as people came out of lockdown and back into offices. Dogs are having to adapt all the time.

Small Business Sunday is weekly initiative set up by Theo Paphitis in 2010 and it now has over 3,000 winners within its supportive community.

Theo said: “We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK.

“My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings.

“The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Niki and Pup Talk every success.”

Insect protein pet food secures first garden centre stockist

Monkton Elm Garden Centre in Taunton, Somerset, has become the first garden centre in the UK to stock Percuro Insect Protein pet food...

Monkton Elm Garden Centre in Taunton, Somerset, has become the first garden centre in the UK to stock Percuro Insect Protein pet food.

Natalie Gray, Monkton Elm’s pet centre manager said: “As a pet shop in a garden centre our two main priorities are pets and sustainability. It can sometimes be difficult to find something that’s really good quality for your pet as well as helping to reduce your carbon footprint and Percuro hits both of these requirements.

“With regards to the food it’s full of hypoallergenic pre-biotics and vitamins and all ingredients are 100% traceable.

“I think insect protein is a great conversation starter. We share our planet with 500 million companion cats and dogs, who consume an Earth-shattering 20% of the world's meat and fish!

“To put this into perspective producing 1kg of insect protein from a popular edible insect requires 92% less space, 99% less water and creates 99% less carbon than making the same amount of beef protein.

“We are the first garden centre to stock it and the only stockist in the south region. What makes this even better our main pet charity we support – Rushton Dog Rescue – has also partnered with Percuro.

“We are getting loyalty cards where customers will get their 8th bag free and they also offer a satisfaction guarantee, which is great for those pet parents with fussy dogs.

“The packaging is completely recyclable which I think the majority of customers are conscious about.

“We are also getting a screen which shows a two-minute clip of everything in cartoon form so customers can see for themselves what Percuro offer.

“This food is also cruelty-free which appeals to customers who are vegetarian or vegan.”

Mr Bug targets dog-friendly hospitality sector

This Spring sees Devon disruptor Mr Bug push its unique range of nutritious bug bites into the South West’s growing gathering of dog-friendly pubs, bars and cafes...

This Spring sees Devon disruptor Mr Bug push its unique range of nutritious bug bites into the South West’s growing gathering of dog-friendly pubs, bars and cafes; venues where dogs have for too long only had access to unappetizing doggy treats that have sat on the end of a bar in a jar forever and a day!

Consistently Kennel Club research has shown that allowing pet parents to bring their beloved dogs into the local pub or bar has multiple benefits for all parties concerned, from creating a loving home-from-home environment for ‘pawrents’ to building foot traffic, generating increased levels of interaction between guests, building pub-friendly social media activity whilst generating invaluable, added snacking revenue (dog treats….)

In 2022 the Times highlighted that in excess of 2,400 retailers are now listed on the Dogfriendly.co.uk 40,000 strong business database, which has generated an exponential rise in searches for dog-friendly establishments over the last year.

According to Mr Bug founder, Conal Cunningham, ‘At a time when pubs are consistently raising the quality of their human food offer, it makes sense that they also revisit the quality of their incumbent dog treats.  Made from nutritious mealworm powder that delivers more protein than steak, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach and more B12 than salmon, Mr Bug’s sustainable bug bites pair the Rolls Royce of vitamin-rich grubs with an array of great tasting real foods including -beetroot, peanut butter, apple, cranberries, turmeric, parsnips, honey and vegan cheese.

Better than that, stocking the award-winning Mr Bug provides invaluable support for Devon’s rural economy whilst championing a young bustling pretender to the premium dog treats scene that is building a loyalist following within the indie pet shop and online scene and making its Crufts debut next month.

Rawgeous-sponsored champion limbers up for Crufts

Rawgeous Pet Food-sponsored World Dog Agility Champion, Katrina Hands, and her son Blair, are limbering up for Crufts which starts at the NEC Birmingham next Thursday...

Rawgeous Pet Food-sponsored World Dog Agility Champion, Katrina Hands, and her son Blair, are limbering up for Crufts which starts at the NEC Birmingham next Thursday.

Katrina will be competing in the Crufts Small Singles on Friday, in the Small Championship on Sunday and Blair in the Junior Pairs Competition.

Last year competing for Team Scotland, Katrina won a Bronze medal for the Overall Games Championship at the World Agility Open in the Netherlands with her Shetland sheepdog, Sizzle. She also gained second place in the Gamblers Class. Katrina was selected to represent Team GB at the World Championship in Austria where she ran clear and contributed to the team’s seventh place.

Katrina who is a Sports Massage Therapist by profession as well as being a Dog Agility Trainer at Finavon Dog Agility, started in the sport in her mid 20’s. Her love and passion for dog agility was passed down to her son, Blair who plans to train to be a hydro therapist when he leaves school. Blair started out in agility at the tender age of 10 years old winning the Scottish Junior Handler prize two years in a row with Rosie, one of their two retired border collies in 2018 and 2019. Blair has also competed in Young Kennel Club classes at Crufts for the past 6 years gaining a third place in the YKC Agility Dog of the Year and a 2nd place in the Futurity Dog at CSJ Open in 2021

Katrina now competes with Sizzle, a 4 year old Shetland sheepdog, and Minx, a 7 year old jack russell terrier cross toy poodle. Blair competes with his 3 year old Shetland sheepdog, Rapid, and is also fortunate to occasionally borrow another Shetland sheepdog, Sofi, from her owner Lian Knight.

At last year’s Crufts, Blair and Rapid were 4th in 12-18 years YKC Agility Dog of the Year. Blair and Rapid also partnered with Dylan Osborne and Jelly were 2nd in YKC O12 pairs. Katrina and Sizzle came second in the Singles and also second in the Championship class. Katrina also won the British Open with the same dog. Blair competed for the Junior GB Agility Team with both Rapid and Sofi in Finland in July 2022 which was a huge achievement and the team finished fourth overall and won the jumping round.

Katrina was also selected for the Senior GB Agility Team with Sizzle for the European Open in Belgium in July 2022 where they put in clear runs but narrowly missed out making the finals.

Katrina and Blair have been helped on their way by a recent sponsorship deal with raw pet food manufacturer, Rawgeous. Katrina believes that changing her dogs’ diet has helped to fuel their performance and helps to keep them fit and healthy.

Katrina explains: “I decided to change to raw feeding as I wasn't happy with how my son's dog was doing on the various dry foods we had tried. A good friend suggested we should try raw. Then I started the process of looking into different raw food companies. We settled on Rawgeous for a number of reasons. They laboratory test each batch of food to ensure it is safe. They ethically source and can trace all their ingredients and they are a family company, which appealed greatly as Blair and I are mother and son. Additionally I was able to speak directly to Lorraine Sweeney, co-founder of the business to get advice on which flavours to try first and which flavours to feed at different times of our competing season.

“Their packaging is biodegradable and recyclable; some of the other companies I had considered were using lots of plastic packaging and I wanted to try to avoid this. In addition to the minced raw food, they also produce raw sausages; these are great for training treats when chopped into small pieces. So I can continue with the raw food even when training certain activities.”

As well as providing food for the sponsored dogs, Rawgeous Pet Food also provides polo shirts and a jacket to wear with the Rawgeous logo on it for the competing pair which they wear at competitions. Katrina also has a 30% discount code that she can pass onto other dog owners who want to try to delicious Rawgeous raw food recipes for dogs.

Commenting on the sponsorship deal, Lorraine Sweeney said: “We are absolutely delighted to be sponsoring Katrina and Blair and to see them doing so well in the dog agility world. They are an example of the old adage that when it comes to pet nutrition, what you put into a dog you get out of it in terms of health, vitality and wellbeing. It is fantastic that all the dogs are performing so well on the Rawgeous food.”

Award-winning Furr Boost set for Crufts appearance

Furr Boost will be exhibiting at Crufts, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham on 9-12 March, and there will be a lot for visitors to see.

Furr Boost is a multi-award winning smoothie drink which contains a meat, fruit and vegetable, along with added oils and vitamins. It’s more than a hydration drink as it supports a dog’s wellbeing in areas such as digestion, skin and coat, anxiety, metabolism and immunity.

Voted Best Product Innovation (Food and Treats) at PetQuip Awards 2022 and Best Dog Product at the Pet Industry Federation Awards 2022, Furr Boost has multiple uses.

Furr Boost can be added as a topper to dry foods to give full hydration and extra nutritional value to a dog’s meal. On hot days or when in exhibition halls or at show grounds, you can freeze Furr Boost to make a tasty treat which your dog can lick to keep cool or you can simply pour into a bowl for your dog to enjoy. Pour into a LickiMat and you will keep any anxious dog occupied and happy.

Furr Boost is also excellent for senior dogs that need something nutritional, comforting and soothing. The product is also handy to pop in a bag or car for travelling to shows or going on holiday. Simply give the carton a good shake, flip up the sides, fold over the top along the razor strip and tear off to serve.

Furr Boost is particularly popular with Flyball and Dog Agility competitors. A carton of Furr Boost gives instant hydration to any dog that has been competing hard in the ring keeping them nice and fresh for each round of the event. It is also a refreshing drink for dogs who take part in heelwork to music and obedience competitions as well.

Furr Boost is available in three varieties, which all use the best quality 100% natural human grade ingredients: Chicken, Butternut Squash & Cranberry, Pork, Apple & Sweet Potato and Beef, Broccoli & Blueberry.

Other added ingredients include flaxseed, coconut and salmon oils, dried sea kelp, chicory root extract, yeast beta glucan, vitamins B&C and water. Furr Boost try to keep the ingredient list as simple and natural as possible whilst giving the dog key nutrients.

Furr Boost is also a sustainable product using packaging materials which are recyclable avoiding single use plastic as each smoothie is available in a Tetra Pak Carton.

Pet owners can visit Furr Boost’s stand at Crufts, Hall 1 stand 127, to purchase a pack and see how Furr Boost can be used to treat you dog in a variety of ways. There will also be a free prize draw to win a hamper of goodies for your dog and a few other surprises as well.

BVA responds to Northern Ireland Protocol announcement

The British Veterinary Association has issued a statement in response to the UK Government’s publication of the Windsor Framework, which replaces the former Northern Ireland Protocol...

The British Veterinary Association has issued a statement in response to the UK Government’s publication of the Windsor Framework, which replaces the former Northern Ireland Protocol.

British Veterinary Association President Malcolm Morley said: “On first reading, the ‘new deal’ for Northern Ireland looks positive for vets, farmers and agri-food businesses, as well as pet owners. Throughout the UK, the veterinary profession is managing with workforce shortages and so it’s encouraging that new proposals seek to minimise the need for vet intervention as animals and goods move across the Irish Sea.

“The new rules will be a particular relief to pet owners who regularly travel between Great Britain and Northern Ireland with their animals. The rules will mean less paperwork for vet practices too and will help reduce over treatment. The British Veterinary Association welcomes the hard work of vets across governments that has got us to this stage.

“The Windsor Framework recognises there is still more to do to ensure long-term access to vet medicines for Northern Ireland and we look forward to working with all parties to find a workable solution.”

Windsor Framework brings many positives, says NOAH

NOAH (National Office of Animal Health) has welcomed the Windsor Framework as a very positive step forward towards making changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol in a way that sets out to benefit all communities in Northern Ireland...

NOAH (National Office of Animal Health) has welcomed the Windsor Framework as a very positive step forward towards making changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol in a way that sets out to benefit all communities in Northern Ireland.

The constructive dialogue and detailed discussions have paved the way for new trading arrangements between GB and NI through a new UK internal market system (green lane) whilst still requiring full EU process for third country goods moving into Ireland (red lane). Importantly, it also recognises the island of Ireland as a single epidemiological area for animal disease and includes measures to protect this.

Nevertheless, for the animal health sector, the specific issue of continued access to veterinary medicines in NI remains, as no change has yet been made in relation to arrangements for veterinary medicines.

The extension of current arrangements until 2025, announced by the European Commission in December 2022, continues to alleviate problems in the short term, supporting the health and welfare of NI farm livestock and pets as well as food security and public health. However, in the longer term, with no change to the NIP for veterinary medicines, approximately 50% of the current veterinary medicines will not be available on the NI market.

Dawn Howard, NOAH Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased to see that this has been recognised by the UK Government in the Framework paper which states that, as things stand, more than half of product lines remain at risk. We thank NOAH members for their diligent work in providing this evidence,  and welcome the Government’s recognition that the only practical solution will be the development of a long term solution, as with human medicines, to guarantee the existing and long-established flows of trade between GB and NI for our sector. We look forward to working with them and their EU colleagues in finding a solution that works for veterinary medicines, in the tremendous spirit of co-operation demonstrated by the publication of the Framework.”

She added: “The Framework brings many positives, one specific being the new travel arrangements for pets moving between GB and NI. This ends the old Protocol requirement for an individual certificate for each movement of a pet into NI from GB. For Northern Ireland pet owners, there are no requirements of any kind. For GB pet owners travelling to NI, and not travelling on to Ireland, pets will need confirmation of microchip through a travel document issued for the lifetime of a pet.

“We hope that the most welcome declaration that the Government and the EU are both firmly committed to a positive, constructive relationship as partners, focussing on shared priorities in Europe and on a global stage will pave the way for continued developments. With animal disease knowing no borders, a collective approach to One Health and innovation, such as reopening Horizon funding access to UK projects and expertise, will benefit us all. And ensuring NI animals continue to be able to access the full range of veterinary medicines to prevent and treat disease is an important piece in protecting the health of the animals and people across the UK and Ireland, and throughout Europe and the world,” she said.

Grooming tuition for military personnel

Kent's Four Paws Groom school has been approved by the Ministry of Defence to train forces leavers how to become dog groomers...

Kent's Four Paws Groom school has been approved by the Ministry of Defence to train forces leavers how to become dog groomers.

The Ashford school, which offers Ofqual regulated qualifications by iPET Network, has been approved by the MOD to deliver the full Level 3 range of Dog Grooming courses along with shorter animal care qualifications to military personnel from the RAF, Army and Royal Navy.

Personnel leaving the forces have access to a resettlement fund, giving them opportunities to re-train at approved facilities, Four Paws Groom School now has their Kent and Cheshire schools approved and as pet grooming is a growth industry, learning the trade could be a lucrative and rewarding choice.

Other courses including canine first aid, pet sitting and dog walking are also available to military leavers at Four Paws Groom School.

Sarah Sturley, from Four Paws Groom School Kent, said: "We are thrilled to be part of this very worthwhile resettlement scheme for forces leavers, and look forward to welcoming our first students.

"There are more pets in the UK than ever before, and popular cross breeds such as labradoodle and cockapoo need regular coat care.

"This means that many established groomers are struggling to keep up with demand, so it has never been a better time to consider a career in pet care."

iPET Network qualifications are regulated by Ofqual, and are designed by experts working in the industries that the courses focus on.

The MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) Scheme promotes lifelong learning among members of the Armed Forces.

Leading vet speaks out in support of probiotics

A leading vet has spoken out in support of surgeries switching to probiotic-based cleaning products and care treatments...

A leading vet has spoken out in support of surgeries switching to probiotic-based cleaning products and care treatments.

Wylies Pet Wellness Centre in Essex is well-known for its ethical and environmental stance on pet care, and the practice is leading the way by switching to probiotic cleaning products, as well as probiotic care products including for eyes, ears and dental.

A growing movement of pet professionals and experts, who look closely at the ingredients that are in the everyday products that they use, have found an alternative option to chemicals for practices across the UK and beyond.

Probiotics, which are commonly thought of as something you take after a bout of gastric difficulty, have been found to be as effective as bleach at cleaning surfaces and for bathing and caring for pets, are not harmful and are better for the environment too.

The use of cleaning chemicals in the name of health and hygiene has grown exponentially since the Second World War; even more so since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Richard Doyle of Wylies Pet Wellness Centre, said: "We stock a range of probiotic products from gut stabilisers, to allergy sprays, shampoos, dental, eye and ear preparations. We also use probiotic cleaning products and hand soaps.

"These product’s definitely have a role to play in our modern world as we realise the importance of ‘good bacteria’ in the maintenance of health but also the fight against pathogens.

"A dog’s mouth is no exception! We find the dental health product is very good at controlling plaque build-up, gingivitis and halitosis before more serious dental disease ensues."

March is Dog Dental Month, with brands including Ingenious Probiotics shining a light on the role on the cheap and simple things that owners can do to protect their pets' teeth.

The company's LUCAA+ Probiotic Pet Dental Care is a simple to use mouth spray that makes dental care easier for cats and dogs.

The core ingredient are specifically selected probiotics naturally sourced from plants. This quickly restores healthy microflora balance to the mouth. They clean teeth and gums at a microbial level, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and foster better dental health. The link between good dental health and general organ health has been known and understood for quite some time both in our pets and in humans (that’s why we floss!)

The product reduces plaque and tartar build up and bad breath, as well as the risk of inflammation and periodontal disease. This is achieved by a simple but effective bio-competition method – the good bacteria (the probiotics) simply out-gun the pathogenic bacteria and remove the organic waste they would otherwise feed upon. In this respect, the probiotic cleanser for the dental area works in a similar way to the cleaning product range.

Joe Flanagan, of Ingenious Probiotics, who supply Wylies with the LUCAA+ range, added: “Simple changes to your dog’s routine really do make all the difference, and at a time when everyone is tightening their belts, could save you a lot of money too.

“There are plenty of things we can all do at home cheaply and effectively to ensure that our dogs’ teeth stay healthy, and avoid costly visits to the vet.”

Harrogate Borough Council has opened a new pet crematorium on Wetherby Road in Harrogate.

The borough council's pet crematorium provides a dignified, appointment-only cremation service for people's beloved cats, dogs or small animals.

People can bring their pets to the new peaceful goodbye room to say their final goodbyes in private, where they will be treated with compassion and respect.

Councillor Sam Gibbs, Harrogate Borough Council's cabinet member for environment, waste reduction and recycling, said: "Pets are like part of the family and they deserve an ending with dignity and respect, just like humans.

Launch of exciting new show for fishkeepers

An exciting new consumer show has been launched to run alongside AQUA 2023, which will be taking place over three days for the first time at Telford International Centre, Shropshire, in October. The new event for consumers, called Water Alive, will be staged over two of the days and will give fishkeepers the chance to see all the latest launches in one place.

AQUA 2023 is being held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 12-14 October, with Water Alive being open to consumers on the final two days (Friday and Saturday). The Thursday of AQUA 2023 will be a trade-only day as in previous editions.

The biennial AQUA exhibition, launched in 2010, has always been a business-to-business (B2B) only event but there has been a growing feeling within the industry that ‘end customers’ have missed out on meeting all the brands and new products in one place.

Now the launch of Water Alive alongside AQUA 2023 will help consumers become more engaged with their hobby and feel part of an amazing industry. Meeting experts face-to-face in one arena will also provide them with an ideal opportunity to learn more about fishkeeping, aquascaping, watergardening and corals.

Leading exhibitor Seneye welcomed the move, with the company’s Matt Stevenson saying: “The UK aquarium trade is about to get a lot more exciting. This is going to be the biggest ever celebration of fishkeeping in the UK.”

One of the most exciting aspects of Water Alive will be the Retail Mall where a mix of retailers will sell dry goods along with plants, corals and other invertebrates. There will be no live fish sales.

Consumers will also be able to learn more about their hobby from experts giving talks at a special seminar area called Speakers Corner, plus a range of other hobbyist focussed features.

So that business can be carried out professionally and privately on the days open to the public (Friday and Saturday), a special B2B area will be available for exhibitors and visiting retailers.

Registration for Aqua 2023 is live on the website www.aquatelford.co.uk. Consumers for Water Alive will be able to book tickets at the same site from the end of March.

Companies wishing to exhibit at AQUA 2023 and Water Alive and retailers seeking more information about taking part in the Retail Mall should call the organisers on 01892 862848.

Award-winning pet shop set to close next month

An award-winning pet and animal feed centre is closing down at the end of March after 14 years in business.

Poole Farm Feed Centre, which won the UK Retailer of the Year at the PIF Awards in 2014, informed its customers of the closure on social media.

Stephen Williams and his wife Jo bought the business and farmhouse at Poole Farm, Great Yeldham, Essex, in 2009 after it had been previously owned by Jo’s parents. Previously, Stephen had worked for Walt Disney as Finance & Operations Director for its video games business.

Stephen and Jo, pictured above receiving their 2014 Retailer of the Year Award from former heavyweight boxer Frank Bruno.

In an announcement on the store’s Facebook page, the couple stated: “After much deliberation, we would like to share with you our decision to close the shop.

“We have run Poole Farm Feed Centre for nearly 15 years and it has been a huge part of our lives, but times change and we feel, for various reasons, that it is now time for us to close the doors. It has not been an easy decision to make.

“We want to thank everyone that has supported us over the years. Your support has been amazing and has been so greatly appreciated. It has been a phenomenal 15 years  – albeit hard work along the way.

“We will be closing our doors on 31 March 2023. In the meantime, all feed and bedding will still be stocked and arriving on a regular basis. Also, we will be having a closing down sale (excluding feed and bedding) – so come and grab a bargain and give us a chance to say goodbye.”

The announcement brought an avalanche of social media comments from customers. Here’s what some had to say:

  • “Sorry, to hear this guys! You’ve all been a great asset to the area.”
  • “You and your staff are all so helpful and lovely – will really miss you.”
  • “Wow, sad news for all your customers. I hope you guys have something awesome in the pipelines for yourselves, you absolutely deserve it. You guys and your staff have been excellent.”
  • “You're such a lovely bunch, so knowledgeable and helpful. We'll be lost without you.”
  • “You will be such a massive loss for our area! Always such a good service. Must have been a hard decision to make! Wishing you much luck for the future.”

Double celebration for pet store owner

Pet store owner Toni Marsh had reason to celebrate twice this month – first to mark the 10th anniversary of her West Sussex business and then to rejoice in winning a ‘most loved local business’ award...

Pet store owner Toni Marsh had reason to celebrate twice this month – first to mark the 10th anniversary of her West Sussex business and then to rejoice in winning a ‘most loved local business’ award.

Toni admits it has been a challenging decade running The Pet Pantry in Selsey High Street, but wouldn’t change it for the world.

And becoming one of the UK’s Top 20 Most Loved Local Businesses has put the icing on the cake.

“Ten years ago I became the official owner of The Pet Pantry,” said Toni. “I cannot believe it has been an entire decade since the slightly naive, 20-something me took over the reins of my local pet shop – I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun!

“I won’t sit here and say it has been plain sailing – it hasn’t been. Working for yourself is hard. I don’t have an off switch. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep (and the moments where I wake up in between) I am thinking about or working on something to do with the shop.

“There’s obviously been a few big issues that have made it a tough time for businesses in the last few years, including a worldwide pandemic and cost of living crisis. But would I change any of it? Definitely not! I’m the one that gets to make every single decision about the business and I don’t have to run it by anyone, I actually can’t imagine having to have a boss now.

“I wouldn’t be where I am though without the support of all my family and friends around me and all of my lovely, loyal customers. I’m also very lucky to have some incredible suppliers and friends in the industry. They are all really are just the best.

“I’m having a weekend of celebrations and giving myself a big pat on the back before getting back straight into work mode and planning my next steps, I’m just getting started.”

UK’s Top 20 Most Loved Local Business Awards are organised by ShopAppy, a website designed to support independent retailers, and are run on Love Local Day (February 14). ShopAppy asks customers to vote for their favourite local business before compiling a list of the Top 20 companies.

“As it’s voted for by the community, this award means the world,” said Toni.

Microwaved meals for dogs claim to be pet industry first

HugMyDog claims its premium ready meal for dogs is the UK’s first really exciting innovation in pet food for decades...

HugMyDog claims its premium ready meal for dogs is the UK’s first really exciting innovation in pet food for decades.

The range of complete meals uses prime cuts of British meat, chicken and fish with seasonal vegetables and sprinklings of nutritional vitamins and minerals.

The frozen, microwaveable ready meals can be cooked straight from the freezer and served (once slightly cooled).

The team of nutritionists at HugMyDog has developed recipes to meet the specific daily needs of puppies, adults and senior dogs – these include Beef with Sweet Potato, Chicken with Carrots and Pork with Apple.

HugMyDog has a minimum meat content of 70% and is made from human-grade prime cuts of meat, which is bone-free, does not include offal, grains, legumes, or fillers, comprising just wholesome and nourishing ingredients.

Sara Pearson, a joint founder of The Hug Pet Food Company, said: “Historically, pet food choices have been wet (tinned), dry (kibble), ready-cooked or raw. In the same way you would not dream of feeding your baby solely on a diet of tinned or dried food, it applies equally to a much-loved dog.

“The new urban pet owners have come into the market with fresh eyes and understand that feeding their pets properly with a good and wholesome diet can extend life, minimise illness and generate health and happiness. HugMyDog has been developed specifically to meet this demand.”

Seeing the very latest pet products and innovations launched under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this March’s show at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey, is set to showcase an impressive number of new items.

More than 150 companies and brands have booked their space for PATS Sandown, which takes place on Sunday, 26 March, and Monday, 27 March, and they can’t wait to unveil their latest launches in the popular New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews.

Products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers and retail experts on the first day of the show to decide the winners of the PATS Sandown New Product Awards.

There are nine categories in the New Product Showcase and past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.

EzyDog UK won the Dog Harnesses, Leads and Clothing category at PATS Sandown in 2022 with its Friday Collective Corduroy, and the company admits the award was a great launchpad for the product.

It has increased visibility and credibility, which in turn has led to more customers coming to us and trusting our services and products,” said EzyDog.

“The award has also enabled us to secure various partnerships with other businesses, as well as access new markets that we previously couldn’t tap into. Shortly after the award, we received an influx of Corduroy requests, including questions if there were more Corduroy products on the way!

We showcased the official PATS award through our social media platforms and throughout our website – it received a fantastic response from everyone online.”

The Showcase is designed to help visitors easily find the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.

The New Product Showcase entries will be displayed under the following nine award categories:

  • Cat Food and Products
  • Dog Food Products
  • Dog Treat Products
  • Dog Accessories and Toys
  • Dog Harnesses, Leads and Dog Wear
  • Small Animal and Bird Products
  • Pet Care Products
  • Grooming Products
  • Business Services

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to register for free entry, how to reach the venue and regularly updated with show news.
