Dog food business secures £280m investment

Butternut Box, the UK-based fresh dog food company known for its innovative approach to pet food, has raised £280m in its latest fundraising round from new investor General Atlantic, a leading global growth equity firm...

Butternut Box, the UK-based fresh dog food company known for its innovative approach to pet food, has raised £280m in its latest fundraising round from new investor General Atlantic, a leading global growth equity firm.

Existing investor L Catterton, a leading global consumer-focused investment firm, also participated in the round, helping to further the brand’s presence in Europe and continue its mission to deliver fresh, tasty, and healthy meals to dogs around the world.

The transaction's closing is subject to customary regulatory conditions, but is expected to occur in Q4 2023.

Butternut Box feeds dogs in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and most recently Poland following its April 2023 acquisition of PsiBufet, one of the leading fresh dog food companies in Central and Eastern Europe.

Since its inception in 2016, Butternut Box has grown rapidly, raising over £100m to date, including investments from L Catterton, White Star Capital, Five Seasons Ventures, Passion Capital, Literacy Capital, Claret Capital, and HSBC.

This latest investment will be used to build on this momentum, underscoring Butternut Box’s mission to deliver health and happiness to dogs and their humans. Butternut Box plans to use this funding to accelerate the company’s leadership position across the Fresh category in the pet food space through further European expansion, including the development of a new European manufacturing facility. The planned facility will be the second of its kind for Butternut Box after Rudie’s Kitchen, a fully integrated manufacturing and fulfilment facility that opened in March 2021, giving the company complete visibility and control over its emissions production.

This further underlines the company’s commitment to creating a positive impact across all areas of its business, as evidenced by receiving B Corp accreditation in September 2022.

Kevin Glynn, co-founder of Butternut Box, said: “We are delighted to now partner with General Atlantic, who is an incredible investor and shares our long-term vision of developing the category of Fresh pet food across Europe. It is also fantastic to receive further support from our long-standing partner, L Catterton who we’ve been proud to work with for several years now and who also believes in the power of Fresh and that we are only really at the starting line. Most notably we are incredibly excited by what this investment will unlock for our customers (dogs and humans) in the years to come as we are nothing without them.”

“We’re thrilled about the ways in which this investment will allow us to continue to live out our mission,” added David Nolan, co-founder of Butternut Box. “Everyone here is driven by a uniting purpose to deliver health and happiness to all dogs, everywhere. This investment will help us take the next leap forward in doing just that.”

“We are very excited to partner with Kevin and David who have reimagined Fresh pet food through Butternut Box's diversified product portfolio and mission-driven brand,” said Melis Kahya Akar, Managing Director and Head of Consumer for EMEA at General Atlantic. “There is an immense opportunity set across the Fresh pet food category in EMEA, and we believe Butternut Box is well positioned to leverage its digitally enabled business model to meet this growing demand. We look forward to utilising our pet expertise and technology capabilities to support the Company through its next chapter of growth.”

“Since partnering with Kevin, David, and the team three years ago, Butternut Box has expanded its leadership in the growing Fresh pet food space in the UK and Europe and has built a loyal following among pets and humans alike,” said Howard Steyn, a Partner at L Catterton. “While we have long had conviction in the UK Fresh category after investing behind this concept in the US, we’ve been particularly impressed by how Butternut Box continues to innovate and deliver such compelling value to its customers. We look forward to leveraging our global experience in the pet category to support the brand’s next phase of growth.”

Butternut Box is dedicated to serving only the highest quality, freshly-prepared meals for dogs, delivered straight to customers’ doors. With a core meals range of 12 fresh recipes, plus a growing selection of treats, chews and supplements, Butternut Box is delivering a fresh take on dog food.

Butternut Box was advised by Harris Williams and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. Houlihan Lokey served as financial advisor and Freshfields served as legal advisor to General Atlantic. PwC served as financial advisor and Latham & Watkins served as legal advisor to L Catterton.

Retail giant Jollyes reports accelerating Q1 performance
Record quarter powered by volume growth

Jollyes confirmed it had delivered its best-ever Q1 trading performance for the 13 weeks to 27 August 2023, and that it planned to open 10 stores by the middle of 2024, breaking through its 100-store target well ahead of schedule...

Jollyes CEO Joe Wykes alongside Melinda Messenger, her dog Peggy and manager Tanya Paterson at the new Swindon flagship.

Jollyes confirmed it had delivered its best-ever Q1 trading performance for the 13 weeks to 27 August 2023, and that it planned to open 10 stores by the middle of 2024, breaking through its 100-store target well ahead of schedule.

The nationwide pet superstore’s FY24 first quarter performance saw a marked acceleration on the market-beating numbers it delivered for FY23.

Total sales for the first quarter of its 2024 financial year were £33.7m, a third – 33.6 per cent - higher than the £25.3m it posted for Q1 in the prior year.

In the quarter, Jollyes posted like-for-like sales of 23.1 per cent, and the company continues to grow materially faster than other retailers in the pet sector demonstrating its offer of value, service and choice is perfectly aligned with customer sentiment.

This growth is a step up from the 17 per cent like-for-like number Jollyes achieved in FY23.

This strong like-for-like growth also excludes the average 80 per cent LFL performance at six stores[1] open slightly longer than a year, but not yet included in Jollyes’ like-for-like Q1 reporting.

Jollyes like-for-like growth has almost exclusively come from transaction growth and not via price inflation which only accounts for only two per cent of that progress.  In fact, the Company has been able to reduce prices on key lines in the quarter despite inflation, as it delivers on its best-value promise to customers.

Growth during the quarter was also supported by a significant increase in sign-ups to its PetCLUB (47 per cent) as customers took advantage of the extra value membership brings.

Accelerating new store rollout

In the quarter, Jollyes added three new stores, in Swindon, Belfast (Boucher Road) and Merthyr Tydfil, bringing the total number of Jollyes stores to 93.

Jollyes has now added 26 stores to its estate across the last two years, an increase of almost 40 percent.

With the backing of a new multi-million facility from HSBC, Jollyes now confirms it intends to step-up its opening programme with another 10 new locations before the end of its financial year in May 2024, allowing it to break through the 100-store mark well ahead of schedule.

Store openings planned over the rest of the calendar year include Harrogate and Widnes (both end September), Swadlincote (end October) and Reading and Hull (end November).

In the first half of 2024 Jollyes also plans to open additional stores in North and South Yorkshire, Tyneside, Bristol, South Wales, Northern Ireland and Central Scotland.

Investing in services

In Q1, Jollyes also completed the relaunch of all its Spas to new Jolly Groomer branding with simple pricing so customers only pay for the services they need,  The roll out of Jolly Groomers is part of a £1m investment in the provision of vet clinics, grooming parlours and other pet services in its stores.

One of the best employers in retail

Over the quarter Jollyes has also invested in its colleagues as it embarks on an ambition to be one of the best employers in retail.

The business has launched an innovative package of benefits for all its 1,000-plus colleagues nationwide, including birthday leave, a ‘pet-eternity’ day for colleagues getting a new pet in the family, a week off on full pay for all colleagues on when they get married, enhanced maternity and paternity leave and an enhanced 20 per cent discount off all Jollyes services.

It has also continued with its SQP training programme in Q1 through Vetpol, with another 52 colleagues in training looking to join the 132 suitably qualified colleagues able to dispense veterinary medicines  deepening the quality of advice for customers.

Sector-leading customer service

As a key indicator of the advice Jollyes offers to pet parents it has, to date received over 41,000 Trustpilot reviews, 87 per cent with a five-star rating, generating a sector-leading score of 4.8.

Jollyes CEO Joe Wykes alongside Melinda Messenger, her dog Peggy and manager Tanya Paterson at the new Swindon flagship.

Commenting on the Company’s outstanding quarter, Jollyes’ chief executive officer Joe Wykes said: “Our performance in our opening quarter of this financial year underlines the effectiveness of the strategy we’ve put in place – delivering exceptional value to our customers, powered by the most knowledgeable colleagues in the industry.

“It’s clear that the dedication of our people and our commitment to value, combined with smart use of our PetCLUB membership data, is a compelling recipe, delivering strong performance in our existing stores and allowing us to open new locations that perform from day one.

“Growing retailers – especially those developing at our pace – are exciting places to work, but I know that can also be demanding on our own people.  Once again I’d like to thank our whole team for what they’ve all contributed.

“Nothing has made me prouder this quarter than the investment we’ve made in them, as we work hard to be one of the best employers in retail.”

Excitement builds with UK’s pet industry exhibition just over three weeks away

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s National Pet Industry Event, which opens its doors at the Telford International Centre in just over three weeks’ time. PATS Telford takes place on Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd October, with more exhibitors than ever before...

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s National Pet Industry Event, which opens its doors at the Telford International Centre in just over three weeks’ time.

PATS Telford takes place on Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd October, with more exhibitors than ever before. The event will see more than 250 companies and brands showcasing hundreds of new products.

PATS always attracts large numbers of dedicated buyers from both the UK and overseas, and this year offers even more opportunities for business. All the big players in the industry will be in attendance, as well as many newer or smaller companies hoping to catch the eye with innovative products. There will be something for everyone.

Other highlights include the New Product Showcase and the ever-popular Grooming Workshops, which provide a great opportunity to discover some useful trade secrets.

Exhibition organiser Gordon Thomas said: “There has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to ensure that PATS Telford delivers the widest range of exhibitors, new products and grooming demonstrations…all under one roof.

“Visitor numbers have been growing rapidly over the years and we’re confident the trend will continue. My advice is to register now for free entry online and then arrive early on the day – doors open at 9.30am – because there’s so much to see and do. You can be assured of a very warm welcome.”

Many of the companies taking stand space at Telford put their decision down to the professional organisation of the event and the outstanding opportunities to engage with retailers.

Sallie-Ann Reed, of ROGZ UK, said: “As an established global pet accessories manufacturer we recognised that PATS Telford has become the number one UK pet trade event and felt it was a huge opportunity we really didn’t want to miss. It’s a fantastic venue – centrally located – and it allows the entire UK pet trade to come together. It’s a special event.”

And Roland Primus, CEO of curli, the harness specialists from Switzerland, commented: “We exhibited for the first time at PATS Sandown in March and we had a very good experience. The support from the PATS team in planning for the show, the logistics and help on site was first class. At the show we got the chance to meet a lot of interesting business contacts. We hope to continue that trend at PATS Telford.

One of the major draws of the show is the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews. This year there are a record number of entries, with more than 300 products to be judged across eight categories. All entries will be judged on the first morning of the show by a panel of independent retailers and retail experts.

PATS has worked closely with PetQuip, an international trade association for petcare goods and services, to increase international interest in the exhibition. Increasingly, overseas buyers are seeing the value of the show in making connections and sourcing high quality UK products.

PetQuip will be hosting the Business Lounge on the show floor on stand K10 and helping international buyers with their product-sourcing enquiries. Along with media partner PPM, PetQuip will also be supporting the New Starter Zone, a special area in Hall 3 dedicated to 30 start-up companies, and staging the presentation of the PetQuip Awards after the first day of the show.

PATS Telford will be presenting state-of-the-art grooming demonstrations and talks on both days of the show. The Grooming Workshop, in association with For All DogKind, will include some of the country’s leading groomers, and demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required for traditional grooming techniques.

To register for FREE show entry, simply visit www.patshow.co.uk where you will also find supporting information.

Celebrating long service at Henry Bell & Co

Henry Bell & Co is celebrating long-service work anniversaries across its Grantham-based operations. Managing Director Thomas Lee has clocked up 35 years with the Lincolnshire company, while Finance Director Carol Foster joined 54 years ago – and five team members are not far behind.

Thomas joined his father, Robert, in the family business in 1988 after completing his studies and time spent travelling. He started on the cereal seed cleaning and packing line before learning all the other production processes as he worked his way up, taking over as MD in 1995.

Over the years, he has guided Henry Bell through a rapidly changing marketplace, ensuring that customers always receive top-quality products and exceptional service. Four years ago, Thomas introduced the company’s own brand, the Henry Bell Wild Bird Care Collection, an exciting range of bird feed and accessories supplying more than 850 garden centres.

“I am the fourth generation of my family to run this company,” said Thomas. “It was originally bought by my great-grandfather, Rothwell Lee, in 1927 when it was a flour mill. Although it has changed considerably over the years, the one constant has been the incredible people who have worked here and the fantastic committed and dedicated team we have here today.”

Carol arrived at Henry Bell as the office junior in 1969 and became Finance Director in 1995, working closely with Thomas. She has overall responsibility for the financial side of the business reporting to Thomas as well as preparing full accounts for auditing purposes and ensuring the Company operates with the legal boundaries of Company legislation.

Apart from a two-year gap from 1986 to 1988, when Carol left to work at a regional conference centre, her career has been spent at Henry Bell. “I absolutely love it here,” she said. “Tom and I became directors in the same year and we were the new kids on the block. Our staff are like family and there’s no job that Tom and I can’t or will not do. We don’t ask anyone to do something that we are not prepared to take on ourselves.”

Members of staff joining Tom and Carol in celebrating their many years at Henry Bell are:

  • Dave Dixon, a team leader in the mixer shed who is marking his silver anniversary. “It’s a great place to work and we all know one another,” he says. “They are a fantastic bunch of people and we are trusted to get on with our jobs. We all pull together and I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that pallets are stacked well and look really good on the lorry.”
  • Robbie Williams, a warehouse manager who started 21 years ago. “Henry Bell is a company that, if you are happy here, you are here for all your working life,” he said. “That really reflects the company and the hands-on management. I really like my job and the way that nothing stands still. There are orders coming in and going out every day.”
  • Meganne Chambers, who has worked at Henry Bell & Co for over 20 years, as stock controller since 2008 She works in the office in a key role that supports the formulation of feed products. Duties include loading mix sheets into the manufacturing systems and making sure all stock levels are balanced and accounted for. “There is a real camaraderie here,” she said. “We really care about one another and we are definitely not just a number. We are all really excited about the Henry Bell Wild Bird Care Collection and it’s really fulfilling to see the products out on sale looking so smart and attractive.”
  • Andy Allen, a line leader in the mixing shed, a position he has held for eight of the 17 years he has worked for the company. “I take care of the bird feed line and, although you might think mixers are repetitive, there’s always something different happening,” he said. “It is hard work, but I enjoy my job and, although the company has got a lot busier over the years, things have got easier, as we now have robots stacking the bags rather than us doing it.” Andy has just taken retirement and will be greatly missed by the management.
  • Terry Desmond a night shift supervisor for 20 years who before that spent five years operating  the micronizers (a cooking process used for cereals and pulses). “The work and nights really agree with me,” he said. “There are four of us on this shift working with the grinder turning wheat into flour for use in pet foods. I am really happy in my role, I like the people I work with and the management.”

Thomas added: “ Introducing our own brand of wild bird feed and accessories to the company’s  existing product portfolio has been a pretty spectacular time for us. It is going really well – we have some super customers and great accounts, and it’s been growing year on year.

“However, we are never complacent. Our whole company is focused on ensuring our customers remain happy with Henry Bell products and the service we provide, and we appreciate that it is only possible thanks to our family of staff who always go above and beyond to do their very best.”

PIF supports Ukraine’s most vulnerable pets

The Pet Industry Federation has successfully sent another lorry load of pet products, which included food and flea and tick treatments, to the U-Hearts Foundation in Ukraine..

The Pet Industry Federation has successfully sent another lorry load of pet products, which included food and flea and tick treatments, to the U-Hearts Foundation in Ukraine.

The U-Hearts project works to protect the thousands of animals abandoned and affected by the ongoing Russian invasion.

Key UK pet companies were involved in this consignment, including Johnsons Veterinary Products, Mackle Pet Food and Jollyes who provided donations which were integral in ensuring that a full lorry's worth of supplies could be dispatched. A special mention must be made of The Big Biscuit Company, whose warehouse became the temporary home for these donations as logistical and administrative processes were undertaken.

These essential supplies will directly benefit:

  • Pet shelters bearing the brunt of the crisis.
  • Volunteers fostering abandoned pets.
  • Samaritans feeding stray animals on the streets and territories.
  • Kennel clubs dedicated to training service dogs assisting the Ukrainian army.
  • Vulnerable pet owners, particularly the elderly and those living in precarious regions.

PIF CEO, Nigel Baker, commented: “This initiative underscores our commitment not just to business, but animal welfare. Our collaboration with U-Hearts has ensured that countless pets in Ukraine, affected by the conflict, are given a fighting chance. Our gratitude goes out to all who have contributed, and we continue to stand with Ukraine during these challenging times."

Paul Gwynn, Managing Director of Johnsons Veterinary Products added: “In the brutal conflict we are witnessing in Ukraine, it will always be the human suffering that grabs the headlines. But it’s important to remember the impact such a situation can have on the stress and wellbeing of pets, and indeed the effect that seeing animals in distress can cause to their owners, or those foster carers looking after abandoned pets.

“Our ethos has always been to deliver the products people need for the pets they love and we are proud to contribute to the global effort to help alleviate the suffering of pets in Ukraine. We hope the pet healthcare products donated will also ease a little of the stress Ukrainians feel when being unable to treat pets for common problems like fleas and worms.

“It has been a great campaign organised by the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and it’s good to know our donation has already reached the U-hearts warehouse in Kyiv. We understand it is from here the supplies will be distributed across Ukraine, to bring a little help to the undoubtedly distressed, but ultimately resilient pets of the war-torn country.”

As the situation evolves, the need for donations continues. PIF appeals to individuals and businesses alike to keep the momentum going. Your donations can make a difference, providing life-saving assistance to pets and their carers.

Pet retailer celebrates food safety milestone

A Southampton pet retailer has gone above and beyond on its food safety requirements in a bid to maintain the highest level of food hygiene for cats and dogs across the south.

Leading pet food and accessory supermarket, Healthy Pet Store, has celebrated another milestone after its logistics and warehousing team successfully passed its HACCP training.

HACCP refers to ‘Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points’ and it is essential for all food manufacturers, and some retailers, because it identifies, evaluates and controls potential hazards in the supply chain process.

Managing Director of the Totton based retailer Deborah Burrows said this is a great accolade to hold in pet food retailing because it means the store can prevent, reduce or eliminate any risks associated with handling food and maintain the correct temperatures of all the produce.

Three colleagues from Healthy Pet Store’s logistics team successfully passed their HACCP training; Warehouse Supervisor, Adam Norman, and Warehouse Operatives Will Facciol and Andrew Hills.

Deborah added: “Ensuring our logistics team is HACCP certified means we maintain the highest level of food safety and quality for our canine and feline consumers.

“Through a number of documented steps and checks, we go above and beyond what is required in our sector and this certification is a unique demonstration of our commitment to excellence in our industry.”

Warehouse Supervisor Adam Norman said: “The HACCP checks we make on a daily, weekly and monthly basis are at the pinnacle of food retailing, nevermind pet food retailing, and this means we can ensure customers feel confident about the safety standards of our range of frozen meals.”

An online pet pharmacy that was set up in response to lockdown will surpass £1million in sales this month.

In just its second year of trading, Vetmedi.co.uk's founder Dr Charlotte Inness says the stratospheric growth is attributed to pet owners feeling the cost of living pinch.

In a bid to avoid more costly options, they’re turning in their thousands to online pet pharmacies like VetMediUK to counteract the high cost of prescriptions.

The Midlands' oldest and most-loved animal welfare charity, Birmingham Dogs Home, has announced pet accessories manufacturer and supplier, Ancol, as its first-ever rehoming programme sponsor.

As an official sponsor, Ancol will support the charity with its mission of helping thousands of dogs find their forever homes throughout the year, which comes at a critical time for the charity as its two rescue centres are at full capacity.

In addition to providing financial support, especially needed with the predicted increase in heating bills this winter, Ancol will be gifting special ‘gotcha’ bandanas to every rescue dog that is adopted from the charity until September 2024, making the start of the next chapter with their new families extra special.

The Walsall-based family-run business has also supported the charity several times in the past, with the supplier sponsoring the charity’s annual Family Fun Day event in Solihull and a kennel at the charity’s Wolverhampton centre.

What’s more, Ancol has recently become one of the charity’s inaugural platinum business patrons. Being part of Birmingham Dogs Home’s Business Patrons Club comes with multiple perks for the businesses involved, ranging from advertising and sponsorship opportunities to team building and community engagement benefits.

Commenting on the new partnership, Head of Fundraising at Birmingham Dogs Home Fi Harrison said: “We are so grateful for Ancol’s continued support and renewed commitment to our charity.

“Birmingham Dogs Home rehomes around 2,000 local homeless dogs every year and this summer we are busier than ever, with both centres at full capacity and hundreds of dogs up for adoption. That’s why the additional support from Ancol for our rehoming programme is very important.

“We launched our BDH Business Patrons Club in May this year and we like to give as much back to our patrons as we can, which is why we will be celebrating and recognising Ancol’s ongoing support over the duration of our sponsorship.”

Adam Marsden, Head of Sales and Marketing at Ancol, added: “We like to do our bit for the animal welfare charities and are proud to be working with Birmingham Dogs Home as one of their business platinum patrons and now the sponsor of their rehoming programme. We hope to help the many local dogs in their care find new homes throughout the year.”

Simply2 Pet Products is donating 10p to the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) from every roll/piece of ProFleece it sells in the UK.

JAAN is a charity dedicated to assisting domestic and wild animals in Indonesia.

When Simply2 Pet Products embarked on a mission to find a small charity that aligned with its values, JAAN immediately stood out. JAAN's unwavering dedication to animal welfare resonated deeply, making it the perfect match for the ProFleece initiative.

One of JAAN's notable efforts is the establishment of a turtle hospital, where they actively combat the illegal turtle meat trade. They also work to safeguard turtle hatcheries and educate local communities and fishermen through informative sessions.

ProFleece vet & pet bedding, which is made using 120-200 recycled plastic bottles per square metre, helps repurpose plastic and prevent it from reaching the oceans. This not only helps preserve the environment but also makes a positive impact on the creatures living in it.

Simply2 Pet Products believes that even the smallest actions can create ripples of change. By choosing ProFleece, customers join Simply2 Pet Products on this incredible journey, making a difference for furry friends and the health of the oceans.

Review of vet prices

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review looking at consumer experiences and business practices in the provision of veterinary services for household pets in the UK...

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review looking at consumer experiences and business practices in the provision of veterinary services for household pets in the UK.

It will explore how well the market, worth over £2 billion in the UK, is working for pet owners including whether they are receiving the information they need at the right time to get appropriate treatment for their pets.

The CMA wants to hear from pet owners and people who work in the industry.

Almost two-thirds of households in the UK own a pet, with the number of pet owners having increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The CMA is concerned that pet owners may not find it easy to access the information they need about prices and treatment options to make good choices about which vet to use and which services to purchase. Households are under strain from the rising cost of living and it is important that pet owners get value for money from their vets - but figures suggest that the cost of vet services has risen faster than the rate of inflation, which is something that the CMA will be looking into as part of its review.

The ownership of vet practices has also changed in recent years – independent practices accounted for 89% of the UK veterinary industry in 2013, which fell to approximately 45% by 2021. In some cases, a single company may own hundreds of practices and it may be unclear to people whether their vet is part of a large group.

People may also be unaware if their vet is part of a group which owns other vet practices in their area or that the services which are being sold to them (such as diagnostic tests or treatments at a specialist animal hospital) are provided by that group. This could impact pet owners’ choices and reduce the incentives of local vet practices to compete.

The CMA is keen to hear more about pet owners’ and vet practitioners’ experiences of:

  • Pricing of services, including whether pet owners were aware of how much a treatment would cost, and how they pay for it (whether they pay themselves or via insurance)
  • How prescriptions and medication for pets are arranged and sold
  • Choosing a vet surgery and whether people are aware that their vet may be part of a larger chain which might also own other surgeries in the area
  • Using out-of-hours and emergency vet services where options might be limited

Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, said: "Caring for an ill pet can create real financial pressure, particularly alongside other cost of living concerns. It’s really important that people get clear information and pricing to help them make the right choices.

"There has been a lot of consolidation in the vet industry in recent years, so now is the right time to take a look at how the market is working.

"When a pet is unwell, they often need urgent treatment, which means that pet owners may not shop around for the best deal, like they do with other services. This means they may not have the relevant information to make informed decisions at what can be a distressing time. We want to hear from pet owners and people who work in the sector about their experiences."

The CMA would like to hear from pet owners, veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, practice managers and veterinary businesses as part of this work. To get in touch visit the case page.

The CMA will provide a further update on this review in early 2024, outlining the issues it has identified and its proposed next steps.

David Singleton appointed Group Head of Clinical Research for IVC Evidensia

IVC Evidensia has appointed Dr David Singleton as Group Head of Clinical Research.

In this new role, David will focus on enhancing the commitment that IVC Evidensia has to clinical research and quality improvement, further developing the strategy and offering support to everyone in the business who wants to contribute to improving knowledge and patient care.

IVC Evidensia’s Research Fund, which includes support for presentation and publication, is available to all employees, and they are committed to ensuring that everyone can benefit from this if they wish. David’s skills in data analysis and study design will support colleagues in ensuring engaging with clinical research is accessible and has the greatest impact.

David joins the leading veterinary group from the University of Liverpool, having spent several years working on a range of veterinary and medical projects across the UK, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, mostly focusing on antimicrobial resistance and stewardship.

He currently serves as a clinical lead for 'vetTeamAMR', in collaboration with RCVS Knowledge, and is planning to use this experience to help integrate clinical research and quality improvement at IVC Evidensia. In a clinical capacity, he has also volunteered his time working with Care For The Paw, a Liverpool-based charity that cares for pets belonging to those who are homeless.

David commented on his upcoming appointment: “I am looking forward to joining the team at IVC Evidensia, particularly working with all members of the veterinary team to help embed a sustainable research culture within everyday clinical practice.

“IVC Evidensia has already demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting the research ambitions of its colleagues; I am excited to be joining at a time when the group is working to establish further leadership in this critical area.”

David’s appointment will look to further the commitment to support research projects within the group and the aim is to embed a sustainable research culture for the future, supporting colleagues in all areas of practice across the group.

One early ambition beyond that is to extend his research into how large clinical datasets can be used to further clinical evidence and improve patient care.

Unlocking the opportunities presented in connecting data across the group will allow the entire network to benefit and will ultimately, in David’s words, “create more opportunities to bring together knowledge and use that to improve patient care.”

Gayle Hallowell, Director of Veterinary Professional Development at IVC Evidensia, commented on David’s appointment: “The appointment of David as our new Group Head of Clinical Research underlines our commitment to supporting colleagues in all areas of practice and making it easier to facilitate the implementation of new projects in the future.”

Laura Playforth, Group Quality Improvement Director at IVC Evidensia, added: “I am very excited to see David joining the team - his passion for clinical excellence will be dedicated to supporting our teams in advancing clinical research and driving continuous quality improvement.”

Vets Now launches Autumn hazards awareness campaign for pet owners

Over 1,500 vet practices throughout the UK are being offered free marketing materials from emergency providers, Vets Now, aimed at keeping pets out of the emergency room.

Partner practices, encompassing daytime veterinary practices who outsource their out-of-hours service to Vets Now, will be offered engaging marketing materials to help raise owners’ awareness of common autumn hazards for pets.

The materials include eye-catching posters for waiting rooms and shareable infographics which can be used on practice websites and social platforms.

The campaign, tagged ‘Don’t lose your sparkle’ tackles a range of common autumn hazards which emergency vets see an influx of during the autumn months including fireworks, antifreeze, mushrooms and toadstools, bonfires and burns and road traffic accidents (RTAs) which rise with darker seasons.

Vets Now marketing director, Rike Jones, said: “Vets Now invests heavily in its marketing in warning pet owners about commonly-occurring pet hazards – like chocolate ingestion at Christmas and Easter and heatstroke in the summer – to try and keep pets and their owners out of the emergency room.

“As well as supporting our 1,500+ partner practices with vital resources like we’ve created for our Autumn campaign, we have a pet care advice hub for owners which includes a comprehensive database of vet-authored articles.”

More than 500,000 people a month already access Vets Now’s huge bank of free veterinary advice online.

Jones continued: “Whilst our emergency teams are always here to give pets the best possible care in the event of an emergency, our goal is prevention. Empowering owners to shield their pets from harm is paramount. It’s also essential that pet owners know what to do when faced with a pet emergency, especially when it’s out of hours and your vet is closed.”

If you’re a Vets Now partner practice and would like to receive the Autumn campaign materials for your website or waiting room, contact the Vets Now Marketing department at marketing@vets-now.com

Nervous rescue dog enjoys holiday after expert advice

A nervous rescue dog, who was afraid of travelling in the car, enjoyed a beach holiday thanks to advice from a top dog expert, a bit of Elvis and a traditional roast dinner herb.

Four year-old Evelyn was rescued from Romania by the Home 2 Home charity, and now enjoys a happy life in Wendover Bucks.

But for the playful chihuahua dachshund crossbreed, travelling in the car was a huge source of stress, and despite the best efforts of her owner Hayley Finch, Evelyn's life was being curtailed.

Hayley, 38, said: "Evelyn used to scream whenever she was travelling in the car, and it was clear that this really was stressful for her. We tried lots of things like positive reinforcement, but she just hated every moment of the short journeys we were taking with her.

"It was curtailing what we could do as a family, and we were missing out on day trips because of the problem. We knew that we had to do something about it."

When a family wedding invitation on the South Coast forced their hand, Hayley and her husband Peter, 53 sought advice from canine expert Anna Webb, who recently worked with Skoda to create a calming playlist for dogs who are nervous on car journeys.

The playlist includes tracks from acts as diverse as David Bowie to Abba and Harry Styles, and the Spotify playlist is also  accompanied by Anna's top tips on training smooth car travel with your pooch.

Anna, 50, advised the couple to acclimatise Evelyn to the car, by simply sitting her in it, and turning the engine on. Gently, gently was Anna's approach and with a bit of work and a few treats, Evelyn was soon sitting well in the stationary car.

Anna also advised that Evelyn should try Pawable's Calming supplement, the principal ingredient of which is traditional roast dinner herb thyme. Thyme promotes better breathing which in turn calms down the dog.

Hayley said: "In the past we have only ever put thyme on our roast potatoes, so it was really interesting to hear about its health benefits too.

"Thank you so much to Anna for her amazing advice, it has really made all the difference to Evelyn, and our lives too."

On the journey to the wedding, after the acclimatisation work, and the calming supplement Evelyn settled down for a peaceful three hour journey, and later enjoyed time at the beach with her family.

"It really was amazing to see the transformation, and we all enjoyed the break away, and the family wedding so much more knowing that Evelyn was calm and happy." Added Hayley.

Anna said: “Training travelling in the car can only work by training the dog in small increments.

"Beginning indoors by acclimatising to a familiar sound that’s contextualised as representing safety.

"Transferring this - soundtrack, radio station or playlist to the car stereo.

"Remaining stationary without the engine on at first ,just to familiarise your dog with the car as a strange place without an escape route, which triggers anxiety in dogs.

"Once your pooch is settled (no panting, no drooling, no whining) in the stationary car, turn on the engine with the familiar sound, remain stationary, and stop at the first sign of any stress.

"Build the time slowly, keep training sessions short.

"Once your dog is totally relaxed on your driveway with the engine on, only then begin short journeys and vary them. Build these journeys gradually. "

According to research conducted this year among 1,000 dog owners, 60% of respondents felt they must limit where they go on days out due to their dog becoming so distressed in the car.

And 24% of participants in the study had no idea how to ease their dog’s discomfort. Overall, six out of 10 owners said they had tried but failed to solve the issue.

Anna added: "Always quit on an up and make the experience fun for your dog, always have the windows open to allow fresh air to circulate, not just air conditioned air, and plan your journey around your dog’s needs  to stretch their legs and have regular comfort breaks.

"Be mindful of overheating in a car even in autumn , and take plenty of fresh water with you.

"Ensuring your dog is in optimum health is always a priority for me, and with anxiety in dogs on the rise, adding a natural supplement like Calming can really help progress training, by taking the edge of all situations, enabling your dog to grow in confidence rather than becoming ’stuck’ in a state of constant stress.”

From Harry Styles, to Miley Cyrus, Rihanna to Abba, Bowie and Elvis Anna's Happy Hounds playlist will help your dog stay relaxed on car journeys.

Businesses urged to prepare for single-use plastics ban

The British Independent Retailers Association is urging businesses to be prepared for the upcoming single-use plastics ban coming into force on October 1...

The British Independent Retailers Association is urging businesses to be prepared for the upcoming single-use plastics ban coming into force on October 1.

Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, is warning that some shopkeepers are either unaware or unprepared for the upcoming change to regulations or single-use plastics on plates, bowls, trays, containers, cutlery and balloon sticks which comes into force in just a few weeks time.

The new rules outlined by the government mean that businesses will face stringent regulations regarding single-use plastics, for online and over-the-counter sales and supply, itesm from new and existing stock, and include all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable and recycled.

Compliance with these regulations is essential, as breaches can result in fines for business owners and local authorities will be carrying out inspections.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: "The ban on single use plastics is coming into force as from the 1st October, and breaches of these new regulations will result in fines for the business owners. It is therefore crucial to really understand the new regulations and start planning to use up old stock and bring in new legal products to replace the single use plastic items. All new regulation invariably mean more cost to the business, but planning ahead can mitigate the impact of this.

"The regulations are a measure to improve recycling and ultimate the negative impact on the environment. We should all want to do what we can, but it has to be reasonable for the business. Retailers will need to start now (if not done so already) to source replacement stock – I have seen increasing use of paper bags and re-usable nets in food shops. For delis the same rules apply, but food served at the counter can still be served in single use containers – however now might be the right time to change everything and establish stronger environmental credentials.

"The message is clear, get to know the rules, start planning and tell the customer you have made the changes. It might even be possible to turn this cost into an opportunity," he added.

Bira remains dedicated to advocating for the interests of independent retailers and helping them navigate the changing retail landscape. The association continues to work closely with its members, providing guidance and resources to aid their resilience and success.

Pets at Home closes Bradford store

The UK’s largest pet retail group Pets at Home is closing one of its stores in Bradford today (August 31) due to “a number of factors”.

The company told customers of the Bradford Forster Square store closure on its social media platform. It confirmed that nearby stores in Bradford Idle, Brighouse and Guiseley would remain open.

The announcement on the Pets at Home Bradford Forster Square Facebook page read: “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to bid farewell to an amazing town and a community that welcomed us with open arms from day 1. We have made some truly special friends, both four and two legged and we’re so sad to be having to say goodbye.

“It has truly been an honour to help and support your pets, whether finding that perfect food for ticky tums or getting that coat to fit just right.

“I can assure you that this decision was not an easy one and not taken lightly, but due to a number of factors we have to say goodbye to Bradford Forster Square.

“Please do come and see us before, as we have until August 31st before our doors close for good, as we hate the thought of not being able to say goodbye to you all in person.

“You can still find all your favourites in our closest stores located in Bradford Idle, Brighouse, Guiseley and all other local Pets at Homes or online at petsathome.com

“Last, but certainly not least – thank you.”

A spokesperson for Pets at Home said: “As we near the end of lease agreements we routinely review the future potential of each of our stores, taking into consideration size of premises, services on offer and other Pets at Home pet care centres in the local area. As a result, we have recently taken the decision to close Bradford Forster Square, which will stop trading on 31 August.

"Whilst these are always difficult decisions, our first priority is our colleagues and we’re delighted they will all be taking up new positions in our other local pet care centres.

"Customers can also still access our pet care services at nearby Pets at Homes stores, including Bradford Idle and Guisley, as well as online.”

Earlier this month Pets at Home reported a rise in revenues of 10.2% to £568.2m. The pet retailer, which operates 453 sites across the UK, said that total group revenue reached £436.8m, up 7.9% when compared to last year.

Pets at Home opened two new shops during the first quarter and also refurbished nine stores in its portfolio.

Pet Family, which operates 150 stores in the UK under its Pets Corner brand, has invested in Belgian retailer Cats & Dogs. It has secured a 30% share of the pet retail group.

The Antwerp-based retailer, launched in 2003 by Kevin Massart and his mother Brigitte Pettens, recently opened its seventh store.

The investment by Pet Family will help Cats & Dogs to open at least 20 more stores in the next five years.

Also, by stocking Pet Family’s specialist products, Cats & Dogs will be able to differentiate itself from rival pet stores in Belgium.

Pet Family owner Dean Richmond admitted the company was looking to invest in other retail companies across Europe.

“There is no other retail chain like Pets Corner that focuses on quality and ethics, and I believe there is a consumer in every market wanting better products, sourced with integrity sold by properly trained staff,” said Dean.

“I’m convinced there are many high class emerging retailers in Europe, like Cats & Dogs, who would benefit from our investment, supportive brands and group scale to help them grow, and we’d love to work with them.”

Pet Family recently secured an eight-figure funding package from HSBC UK to support its growth nationally and internationally, and to create up to 320 jobs nationwide.

Pet Family is using the multi-million pound funding to open 10 new Pets Corner stores throughout England by the end of the year. These include Ascot, which is set to open on September 8, Chelmsford, East Grinstead, Newbury and Colchester.

PATS Telford will be presenting state-of-the-art grooming demonstrations and talks on both days of the show, taking place at Telford International Centre on 1-2 October 2023.

The Grooming Workshop, in association with For All DogKind, will include some of the country’s leading groomers.

Demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required for traditional grooming techniques, as well as showcasing the latest modern trends and creative ideas.

With an increasing number of pet retailers introducing grooming salons into their stores, the PATS programme of talks and demos will provide invaluable insights into this side of the business.

PATS organiser Gordon Thomas said: “We’re really excited to be running such a full programme of grooming talks and demonstrations in association with For All DogKind.

“The grooming demos have always been a highlight of PATS shows and it’s great to be staging such an interesting programme once more.”

The professional groomers taking part on behalf of For All DogKind include Sally Hart, of Tailwaggers Grooming in Kent, and Chris Briggs, of Briggy’s Dog Grooming in North Devon.

Sally was a huge success when she last gave a demonstration at PATS Telford in 2019, and she admits to being delighted to return to the exhibition.

“You can expect to see some world class groomers in the demo area, providing incredible and not-to-be-missed demonstrations,” said Laura.

“For All DogKind is one of the most used natural grooming ranges in the UK and our experts will share how using the brand’s products has made a difference to them, their dogs and their businesses.”

Laura (pictured right, with her sales manager Lisa Oliver-Bridges and Lisa’s dog Harper), continued: “If you’re in the pet industry then PATS Telford is an essential event on the calendar. Nestlé Purina on track for net zero with rail delivery

Nestlé Purina products were part of a first of its kind rail trial delivery to Tesco this month. The range of Purina products, including pet favourites like Felix and Gourmet pouches, were delivered in a rail container which facilitates double-stacked pallets.

Nestlé Purina products were part of a first of its kind rail trial delivery to Tesco this month. The range of Purina products, including pet favourites like Felix and Gourmet pouches, were delivered in a rail container which facilitates double-stacked pallets. The trial saw double-stacked Purina products travel on rail from Hams Hall Distribution Park, in North Warwickshire, to the Tesco Thurrock distribution centre.

The advanced rail container utilises a roof raising mechanism, allowing the Purina range to be double-stacked from floor to ceiling operating at full capacity before the roof is lowered for transit. This means it’s easier to carry up to double the amount of product compared to other container types.

According to the Rail Delivery Group, each freight train has the potential to take up to 76 heavy goods vehicles off the roads and one tonne of products moved by a rail journey produces 76% less emissions than a diesel road journey].

The container has been in development for two years and the aim is to now refine it for future delivery opportunities by this method to contribute to a greener distribution strategy. In 2022, Nestlé announced its plans to increase freight capacity on trains as part of its commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Nestlé UK and Ireland is passionate about finding a solution to double-stack product successfully on rail freight and this trial is a core part of that journey. The success of this trial will allow the company to grow its rail freight volume and support its drive to reduce CO² and its reliance on diesel road freight.

Niall McCarthy, Rail Development and Delivery Manager, at Nestlé UK and Ireland, said: “This trial marks an important development in Nestlé’s commitment to halve its emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. This initial trial will help launch stronger supply chain resilience and reduce carbon emissions in the Nestlé UK and Ireland network. Furthermore, we are proud to deliver to Tesco on this trial, a customer of ours who has been on rail since 2008.”

Nestlé partnered with Bootle Containers, and Marine Container Test Services to design and build the container. Trials have been carried out in partnership with Network Rail, Forth Ports, W H Malcolm Group and Direct Rail Services. Following the success of this trial movement Nestlé will now look to develop a strategy to expand and refine opportunities to deliver goods by this method.

Purina is committed to improving the lives of pets and people, and along with its parent company Nestlé, aims to enhance and contribute to a healthier future for the planet. As part of this, Purina is committed to reducing its long-term environmental impact as it works towards its ‘Net Zero by 2050’ target.
