Pets At Home has issued a national recall of four types of dry cat food after reports of animals experiencing sudden collapses and spasms.
Three cats needed to be seen by vets just weeks after starting to eat the products when they were all hit by "sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness".
The four products being recalled are part of the AVA range which the firm describes as "veterinary approved". They are: AVA Mature Cat Chicken (2kg), AVA Mature Cat Chicken (4kg), AVA Senior Cat Chicken 2kg, and AVA Adult Cat Neutered Indoor (1.5kg).
A statement on the company's website says: "We are sorry to inform you that we are recalling these AVA products from our range of dry cat food. The neurological signs which were progressive until that point improved dramatically within less than 24 hours and the cat returned to normal within three days. Thiamine supplementation was stopped after 2 months and the cat has remained normal since.""An investigation has revealed that, in the four affected products, the level of thiamine (vitamin B1) was much lower than we had specified. Testing confirmed only these four products are affected.
"We are aware of three cats which, sadly, became seriously unwell four to six weeks after switching to one of the affected products and required veterinary care. All three cats exhibited symptoms of sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness which are not the classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency."
The Food Standards Agency states on its website:
"Thiamine deficiency in cats may impact a cat’s health. Three cats have so far been identified which became seriously unwell after switching to one of the affected products and exhibited symptoms ranging from sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness which are not the classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency.
"If you have bought any of the listed products with the specified product codes, please return it to where you bought it for a full refund or call 0800 328 4204.
"If you have concerns that your cat may be showing any of these symptoms after switching to one of the four affected products then you should stop feeding and seek immediate veterinary advice. You can also contact one of Pets At Home customer advisers on 0800 328 4204 for general advice.
"Pets At Home has recalled the above products. A notification has been sent to vets to be aware of the atypical symptoms and potential for thiamine deficiency. Point of sale notices have been placed in all affected stores and in store and information has been made available on the website. A notification has been published on Facebook and there has been direct correspondence with all known customers. All this information explains to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product."

A pet store in Tring, Hertfordshire, is hoping to open again soon after it was forced to temporarily close due to flooding.
A burst water pipe in a flat above Gosford Pets in the High Street left the shop more than seven inches deep in water, after it collapsed the ceiling and fell to the shop below.
Luckily no pets were present in the store in the overnight drenching but it’s particularly unfortunate for owner Lauren Saunders, who only became the owner back in November.
Lauren, who runs the shop with her sister Chloe, told her local newspaper, The Gazette: “We left the store on a Thursday evening and came back at 8.30am the next morning and there were lots of fire engines outside.
“We were about seven inches deep in water, and the firemen couldn’t believe that it hadn’t caught fire because of all the electrics we have in the store.
“We went in and everything was ruined. We’ve had insurance people in and they have written everything off.”
Lauren estimates that there has been up to £40,000 worth of damage due to the flood, but luckily the shop is covered by its insurance.
Now she’s keen to let customers know the store is going nowhere, and will be back in business shortly.
She said: “We have to get a completely new shop. But the builders we’ve spoken to think they can turn it around quite quickly.
“So hopefully we shouldn’t be closed for more than another two or three weeks.
“It’s been a bit of a nightmare having only become the owners in November.
“But everyone in Tring has been so supportive."

Winning a New Product Award at the UK’s No1 pet trade show can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. It can help turn a new launch into a bestselling item in pet stores around the country and clinch that all-important export deal.
One of the main reasons why the Award is held in such high esteem is the fact it is decided be a panel of independent retailers, who know what it takes for a product to fly on the shelves. Over 4 million pets at risk of deadly conditions
PDSA urges owners to protect pets by neutering
New research from PDSA has revealed that 4.4 million pets are unneutered, leaving them in danger of life-threatening illnesses...
Above: Sukie nearly died after getting a womb infection.
New research from PDSA has revealed that 4.4 million pets are unneutered, leaving them in danger of life-threatening illnesses.
Vet charity PDSA today warned many much-loved family pets’ lives are at risk, as nearly 3 million dogs, 770,000 cats and 720,000 rabbits are unneutered, leaving them susceptible to various dangerous conditions such as womb infections and cancers.
To coincide with World Spay Day the charity’s vets are urging owners to get their pets neutered – a potentially life-saving, simple procedure that can help pets live longer, healthier lives.
The PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report, produced in conjunction with YouGov, has revealed why pets aren’t being neutered. The main reason given by owners was ‘Haven’t thought about it’ (22 per cent), followed by ‘Don’t believe in it’ (16%) and ‘Not got round to it’ (14%).
PDSA Vet Rebecca Ashman, said: “Sadly, vet practices across the UK see the devastating consequences of leaving pets unneutered all too often. Many cancers can be prevented by neutering, as can horrendous life-threatening conditions such as womb infections.
“As well as avoiding unwanted litters, neutering can have many health benefits for your pet. It’s best not to delay – health problems in unneutered pets are more likely as they get older. We all love our pets, so it’s important to prevent potential problems arising when we can. I’d highly recommend owners speak to their vet to avoid future heartache.”
Pet neutering levels vary considerably across the UK, with the North East seeing the highest levels of unneutered pets – 1 in 4 pets (26%) – compared to 16 per cent of pets in the South East.
Regional variances of unneutered pets:
Myths and misconceptions may also be partly to blame for some owners choosing against neutering their pets, as Rebecca explains:
“As a vet, I’ve heard many reasons why people are reluctant to have their pets neutered, ranging from worrying it will emasculate their pets, to concern about denying a pet’s parental rights. The reality is that animals don’t experience emotions in the same way we do. There’s no evidence to suggest there is an emotional cost to animals when they don’t have a litter. If owners have concerns about their pet having an anaesthetic and surgery, their vet or vet nurse will be able to put their minds at rest.
“There is also a fear that neutering will change your pet’s personality. Again, this a common misconception: neutering can reduce testosterone-fuelled behaviours – such as aggression – but this is not the same as changing their nature, which is shaped by genetics and life experiences. If owners have any questions, I’d always recommend they speak to their vet, who can give them specific advice for their pet and address any concerns.”
For all pet owners, regardless of species, unplanned pregnancies can be stressful and expensive, especially if there are complications, according to PDSA. It can be very difficult to find loving new homes for any offspring. As a result, many pets end up in rehoming and rescue centres.

Pet firms warned to beware of over-ambitious staff

Pet companies are being warned to guard against over-ambitious staff who try to run before they can walk. The warning comes from recruitment expert Lynda Ward (pictured), who urges firms to allow employees to fulfil those roles that suit their skills set.
Lynda Ward, founder of Pet Trade Solutions, says there is an increasing trend for people trying to run before they can walk.
“There is a noticeable inclination for people to expect to leap up the management ladder with only a small amount of experience in their current role - for example Account Managers seeking National Sales Manager roles with only two years’ experience in area sales.
“Whilst it’s great that people have aspirations and we always need people with ambition they really need to prove themselves before expecting to manage others.
"Equally, not everyone is cut out for man management and because someone is for example successful at selling they may not necessarily be good at leading a team of salespeople since that needs a different skills set.
"Take a look around at PATS and you will see many long-serving people in the pet industry who have remained in the role they first undertook. They are well looked after by their employers, happy in their jobs and respected in the trade…sometimes doing what you do best pays off."
Lynda is always happy to personally advise on any aspects of recruitment and marketing strategy and can be contacted on 07946 743784 or at lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com

Long Paws was started by Elan Mansur in 2011 as a UK based pet accessory distributor.
The company secured the sole distribution rights for a number of US and European based brands, and after a few years of working with these brands, the Long Paws team decided it was time for a change.
"We simply got tired of hearing phrases like it's good enough and even more tired of being told we were being too fussy." says Elan.
The Long Paws team felt they wanted to be able to offer higher quality to their customers, and be able to safely guarantee the products they sell. This led the company to designing their own range of products, at a quality level not often seen in the pet sector.
Long Paws started developing their own product lines and focussing on developing the Long Paws brand both in the UK and internationally.
Over the past three years, Long Paws has added raincoats, collars, leads, harnesses, tags, and a tick remover, to its line of pet water bottles.
"We've stuck to our guns and maintained our focus of offering outdoor gear for active pets and their owner," adds Elan.
According to Elan, they will be keeping a few of the 3rd party brands in their stable of products, as they offer something different and unique to Long Paws wholesale collection. But where Long Paws has been really focussing is on expanding their brand through their distributor network. So far distribution has been primarily in Europe, but According to Elan, theyre expecting more news in the coming weeks.
While producing its product lines, Long Paws has been developing working relationships with their selected factories.
In addition to producing its own range, the company has managed to leverage off these relationships to develop custom products for a number of other companies who wanted to offer accessories to their customers.
And to keep things interesting, Long Paws has recently moved to new office premises.
"Our last office was getting a little small for our needs, and a move by the landlords to develop the property into apartments, forced our hand a little. But the move has been an excellent one and were looking forward to making more use of our new larger space," says Elan.
Long Paws new office is located at: Suite 5, 220 The Vale, London NW11 8SR.
Long Paws is currently on the lookout for distributors to help the company expand into new countries, and is interested in speaking to UK based sales agents who can help expand the reach. If you're interest you can contact Elan by email info@longpaws.co.uk

The last year has seen marked expansion of the retail support team at Lintbells. Starting with just one person available to visit stores, the company now employs four, dedicated to the pet and equine trade channel and putting feet on the ground from Newcastle to Plymouth.
The move is in marked contrast to many companies who have moved to only offering remote support. Lintbells Retail Channel Lead, UK & Ireland Sue Lewis says it’s all part of getting to know customers and working in partnership, “We value that one to one relationship we have with our customers. In many cases we’ve found we can be more constructive once we have got to know a retailer’s premises, their competitive environment and the type of customers they attract. It’s helped us identify new opportunities in store and to be more responsive to meeting retailers’ needs.”
Joe Goode, Managing Director of Superpet says the support they have received from Lintbells is second to none, “We have always found that Lintbells have a great range of natural products. We see many YuMOVE repeat sales from customers and they are so pleased seeing great improvements with their loved ones mobility. This really gives my staff confidence and satisfaction selling the Lintbells range of products.”
The Lintbells retail team is comprised of Terri-Ann, Retail Channel Lead, who covers the South East and Retail Business Development Executives, Emma, who is based in the South West, Helen, who looks after the North East and Zoe, who will be working with retailers in the North West. To request a visit or find out which team member covers your territory, contact Lintbells on 01462 514239 or call round to the Lintbells stand at PATS (H3).

On Sunday March 12, this year’s Eukanuba Friends For Life champion will be revealed following six weeks of public voting.
Eukanuba Friends For Life celebrates the lifetime of love we share with our pets. The competition recognises truly extraordinary dogs that have significant impact on their owner’s life – whether through assistance and service, or support and companionship.
Every story that is shared through Eukanuba Friends for Life shows how dogs make an extraordinary contribution to our lives and is a recognition platform to honour these heroes. Eukanuba will also welcome previous winners Rosie and Boo, and Amanda and Miracle to find out what they’ve been up to since winning the Friends for Life award in 2016 and 2015, respectively.
During the show, and as it continues to demonstrate its dedication to fuelling dogs to be the best they can be, Eukanuba will host RAF officers and their dogs to showcase the extraordinary work they do, and discuss the importance of keeping these dogs fit and healthy through premium nutrition and appropriate care.
In addition, breeders and dog owners will have the opportunity to speak with veterinary expert Kellie Ceccarelli about their pet’s nutritional needs while Nicki Keeler offers top tips on training focusing on different breeds and their development needs, and Jill Gibson shares her knowledge on large and giant breed dogs.

Annaliese Reekie, Managing Director of Eukanuba UK comments: “Crufts is an opportunity for us to celebrate the champions in our lives whether they are working dogs, assistant dogs, or family pets.

As pet lovers first and foremost, we understand the impact that dogs can make on our life, and as such, we believe that nutritional benefits that last a lifetime should be at the heart of nutrition, helping dogs to live a long, healthy and active life.”
As a leader in trusted, tailored nutrition since 1969, three recent Crufts’ champions have been fed Eukanuba’s premium nutrition which uses high quality chicken or lamb as its principle protein source providing visible benefits with a lifelong impact, from puppy through to senior years.

A beloved pet puppy who was facing a life of pain after suffering a mystery injury has made a remarkable recovery – and is now set to be honoured at the world’s biggest dog show.
Fergus, a larger than life Leonberger, was just a few weeks old when his owners noticed he was having difficulty walking and struggling to stand from a sit. He was refusing food and slept much more than a puppy should.
But after undergoing a course of specialist canine muscle therapy he is bouncing back and displaying all the usual behaviour of a puppy. And his remarkable turnaround is set to be celebrated at Crufts where he will be named ‘extraordinary dog of the year’ by the canine therapist who helped get him back on his feet.
Fergus will be presented with the title by Julia Robertson, founder of Galen Myotherapy, the unique hands-on muscle remedy used to treat him.
His owner Vanessa Leppard, from Crowborough, East Sussex, said: “I really do not know what we would have done if we had not found Galen Myotherapy and Julia. He could have been looking at a life of operations and pain, but she has given Fergus a great future.
“Julia has a special way with dogs and seemed to understand straight away what was causing him problems. She undoubtedly gave Fergus a new lease of life and having him named as Galen’s Extraordinary Dog of the Year award is just the icing on the cake.”
Fergus’ problems started when he was just eight weeks old – the cause for which remain a mystery to his owner and breeder.
He was finding it difficult to walk, struggled to stand from sitting so was bottom shuffling instead, and wanted to sleep all the time – only staying awake for 1-2 hours a day. He was also picky with his food.
Vanessa sought advice and was told his behaviour was probably normal for a growing puppy of his size, but her concerns only grew as his unusual character quirks continued, and after talking to Fergus’ breeder she got in touch with Julia.
Julia’s treatment, Galen Myotherapy, is derived in-part from massage and helps dogs suffering from musculoskeletal pain, arthritis and underlying issues. It was hoped a course of myotherapy would improve Fergus’ mobility and it went on to have instant results.
After just one session Vanessa noticed an improvement in his behaviour - he was able to stand more easily, walked happily and climbed on the furniture like any cheeky puppy.
Julia, a former veterinary nurse, said: “Fergus’ transformation from a slow-moving, fatigued bottom-shuffler to a bouncy puppy that’s full of energy has been incredible and wonderful to see.
“He has been a joy to work with and his remarkable turnaround made him first choice for Galen’s Extraordinary Dog Award.”
Fergus will be presented with his award at Galen’s stand at Crufts at 12pm on Saturday, March 11.
The Galen team will be in Hall 3 Stand 28A for the Crufts weekend, where they will be demonstrating myotherapy and discussing the domestic dangers our homes can present to dogs. For more information about Galen Myotherapy visit www.caninetherapy.co.uk

Pet Trade Xtra's Trevor and Karen Pfeiffer vowed to do The Great Garden Re-Leaf Day walk in full in 2017, so their Labradoodles Olly and Floyd thought they’d better join in to pull them towards the finish.
Olly and Floyd are brother Labradoodles who love walking and getting dirty so they are really looking forward to the 20-mile walk on March 17 from Scotsdales Garden Centre in Horningsea to Scotsdales Garden centre in Shelford Cambridge. It’s a shame they won’t be able to walk through Jesus College garden or The Cambridge Botanic Gardens, but there is a special route around the outside of the gardens that Karen and Trevor can run around the to make sure we don’t lose any time. We’re looking forward to meeting all the fellow walkers – both two-legged and four – and making lots of friends as we walk through Cambridge on March 17th. "Anyone can nominate a Rescue, all we need is the name of the nominated Rescue organisation, a few details about their work and how they would benefit from having their own Photizo vetcare unit.”

Three heroic and devoted Scottish dogs were honoured by the UK’s leading veterinary charity for their bravery and devotion to duty.
At a special ceremony at the Scottish Parliament, Police Dog Ozzy became the latest recipient of the prestigious PDSA Gold Medal* – the animals’ equivalent of the George Cross – for disarming a man threatening to blow up a block of flats.
Police Dog Sweep and civilian dog Sabby were awarded the PDSA Order of Merit* – the animals’ OBE. PD Sweep’s award is in recognition of outstanding service as a detection dog, uncovering drugs, weapons, cash and poisons over an eight-year career. Sabby was honoured for her role within the NHS, supporting people with learning difficulties.
Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin said: “Between them, these three wonderful dogs have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, courage and character. They have excelled in different ways but each story demonstrates the huge contribution that animals make to our lives.”
Police Dog Ozzy
Police Dog Ozzy received the PDSA Gold Medal for his bravery and life-saving actions disarming an armed assailant threatening to blow up a block of flats.
Before his retirement, nine-year-old PD Ozzy worked for Police Scotland. In 2015, Ozzy and his handler Police Constable Brian Tennant, were called to an incident at a flat in Falkirk, where a man had assaulted two people at knifepoint. On arrival they discovered the man had severed a gas pipe and was threatening to blow up the building.
The occupants of the flats were evacuated, leaving PC Tennant and PD Ozzy able to enter the building. The armed assailant charged at them shouting threats, while attempting to ignite the gas with a lighter.
After warning the assailant PC Tennant released Ozzy, who tackled the man to the ground where he was disarmed and arrested.
PD Ozzy’s intervention prevented the man from harming himself and potentially others as well as causing extensive damage to the building.
Commenting on the award, PC Brian Tennant said: “Ozzy has been a loyal and exemplary police dog throughout his career. He has assisted with apprehending numerous criminals, saved lives and prevented countless injuries to members of the public and fellow police officers. Receiving the PDSA Gold Medal is a fitting end to his distinguished career, I am incredibly proud of him.”
Police Dog Sweep
Police Dog Sweep, a Working Cocker Spaniel, received his PDSA Order of Merit for outstanding devotion to duty while working as Detection Dog for Lothian and Borders Police and Police Scotland.
During a career spanning 2007 to 2015, 11-year-old PD Sweep was trained to detect drugs, firearms, cash and poison and worked alongside Police Constable Rhona Meikle.
In 2012, PD Sweep became the UK’s only Poison Detection Dog, after being trained to find Carbofuran, a deadly banned poison used to target birds of prey. He remained in this exclusive role until his retirement in 2015.
During his service PD Sweep completed around 100 successful searches, removing dangerous weapons, drugs and poisons from the streets of Scotland. He successfully located £512,000 worth of street drugs, £250,000 in cash, six shotguns, three handguns, a flare gun, two rifles, 3,500 shotgun cartridges and 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
PD Sweep’s unique skills and devotion to duty have undeniably made Scotland safer for civilians and wildlife.
Commenting on the award, PC Rhona Meikle said: “Sweep has made a huge contribution to the fight against violent and organised crime in Scotland. He has also helped protect Scottish wildlife through his poisons detection work. I’m so pleased he has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit. I’ve always known he’s special and now so does everyone else!”
Sabby (Sabakka)
Thirteen-year-old Labrador Sabby (Sabakka) was awarded the PDSA Order of Merit in recognition of her role supporting people with learning difficulties.
Sabby retired in 2016 after a distinguished ten-year career working with the NHS Lanarkshire Learning Disability Occupational Therapy Service team. During that time she worked alongside Jacqueline Evans, an Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner, helping people with learning disabilities both in the community and the hospital.
Her warm and gentle nature helped her develop a special relationship with patients, allowing them to develop skills, make decisions and learn responsibilities. Opportunities that without Sabby’s involvement would have been unavailable to them.
Sabby has also worked alongside clinical psychologists supporting patients who suffer from extreme dog phobias. Her involvement has been recognised as a key factor in enabling these patients to become further integrated into their community.
Sabby’s work with the NHS Lanarkshire is an excellent example of the special relationship between human and animals.
Jacqueline Evans said: “After many years of devoted service, it is wonderful that Sabby’s skills and commitment to our patients have been recognised by PDSA. She is now enjoying her well-earned retirement and is greatly missed by all the patients and staff she has selflessly helped over the years.”
