Will Young joins purpose-led dog food brand Miraculous Meals as co-founder to help tackle UK rescue crisis

Will Young, a lifelong champion for rescue dogs and rescue dog owner himself, has joined Miraculous Meals — the dog food brand which donates 50% of all profits to UK dog rescue centres — as co-founder to help tackle the UK dog rescue crisis...

Will Young, a lifelong champion for rescue dogs and rescue dog owner himself, has joined Miraculous Meals — the dog food brand which donates 50% of all profits to UK dog rescue centres — as co-founder to help tackle the UK dog rescue crisis.

The UK is facing a severe and growing rescue crisis that few are talking about. A perfect storm of post-lockdown overbreeding, rising living costs, and plummeting adoption rates has left rescue centres at capacity and struggling to cope with the number of dogs in need.

According to the RSPCA the number of dogs needing help now far exceeds the space available. The charity recorded 48,814 neglect reports in 2024, a 25% year-on-year rise, and has seen adoption rates fall by nearly a third since 2019.*

Behind these numbers is a darker reality. Under UK law, unclaimed stray dogs can be euthanised after just seven days. With shelters full and no official records kept, many fear a hidden crisis — with huge numbers of healthy, adoptable dogs quietly being put down in council pounds each year.

Miraculous Meals offers a new way to help — with 50% of profits donated to rescue centres like Birmingham Dogs Home, Hope Rescue and many more, every meal helps give dogs in need across the UK the second chance at life they deserve.

Will’s voice helps spotlight a crisis too often overlooked and his role as Co-Founder ensures the brand's impact grows even further, reaching more dog owners and funding more life-saving rescue work across the UK.

The announcement of Will’s new position at Miraculous Meals coincides with National Dog Rescue Day. To mark the occasion, he’s calling on dog owners to join him and make their everyday purchases make a real difference for dogs in need.

Will Young explains the reason behind the announcement: “Rescuing my own dog made me realise how urgent this crisis really is. So many people want to do more to help, but don’t know where to start. That’s why Miraculous Meals is so special. With 50% of profits going to rescue centres, we’re giving people a simple way to make a real difference.”

Will joins Miraculous Meals’ existing Co-Founders, Ed Pellew and Matt Judkins, on their mission to solve the UK’s dog rescue crisis.

Ed Pellew and Matt Judkins, Miraculous Meals’ Co-Founders, added: “Will has been a passionate voice for rescue dogs for years, so having him join as Co-Founder feels like the perfect match. With Will by our side, we can reach more people, support more rescue centres, and help ensure every adoptable dog gets the second chance at life they deserve.”

Miraculous Meals launched 18 months ago and has already made over £50,000 of donations to dog rescue centres, and with Will Young’s support the brand aims to donate £4 million over the next 5 years to help tackle the dog rescue crisis in the UK.

Vanessa Wadden, CEO at Hope Rescue, commented: ““The system is overwhelmed. Rescue centres are beyond capacity, and the number of dogs needing help keeps rising, leaving teams to make impossible choices no one should have to face. That’s why we’re so grateful for the support of Miraculous Meals. And now, with Will Young joining as Co-Founder, they’re not just backing rescue work, they’re helping bring national attention to a crisis that’s too often ignored.”

Premium UK raw dog food brand Benyfit Natural has announced a shift in strategy in a bid to strengthen its direct relationships with independent retailers. As part of the move, the brand has ended its partnership with Pedigree Wholesale.

Founded in 2014, Benyfit Natural has grown from a small operation to a leading name in the raw pet food industry. The company prides itself on producing 100% natural, premium nutrition for dogs, with human-grade meat and ethically sourced ingredients, with a focus and commitment on sustainability across the entire supply chain. Benyfit Natural has become a trusted brand among pet owners and retailers alike.

As part of this shift in strategy, Benyfit Natural is focusing on strengthening its direct relationships with independent retailers, offering a more personalised service and streamlined supply chain.

The decision to end the partnership with Pedigree Wholesale allows Benyfit Natural to have greater control over its distribution, customer interactions and overall service.

To support its independent retail partners, Benyfit Natural is introducing several new trade initiatives alongside this announcement:

  • Free Trade Delivery: All independent trade partners will now receive free delivery from 12th May 2025
  • Discounts for New and Existing Retailers: New trade customers can take advantage of first order discounts. Existing trade partners can save on May orders by opting into their Bank Holiday trade promotion, with further volume & range promotions launching in Summer 2025.
  • In-Store Support: Benyfit Natural launch new point-of-sale materials, digital assets, product training guides, raw food training guides, freezer deals & re-wrapping service.
  • Dedicated Customer Service: A dedicated support team will be available to support new partners with training, product guidance and customer service.
  • A Refreshed Brand Identity: Benyfit Natural has launched a refresh of their brand & packaging for the first time in almost a decade, to improve visibility in store and provide clarity on brand positioning.

Greg Van Praagh, Head of UK & Europe at Benyfit Natural, said: “We are hugely grateful to the team at Pedigree Wholesale for the support we’ve had over the years, and we’re excited for this next step for our business. We’ve taken on feedback and recognise the importance of product availability and customer service to business owners in the pet industry. We are confident that this change alongside new initiatives to support trade will allow us to better service our customers, manage our distribution network and allow more dogs to enjoy for Benyfit Natural.”

Benyfit Natural remains committed to delivering high-quality products that meet the nutritional needs of dogs. The company continues to prioritise quality & sustainability, using recyclable packaging made from Prevented Ocean Plastics, and sourcing British ingredients responsibly. By focusing on direct relationships with independent retailers, Benyfit Natural aims to foster a community of partners who share its values and dedication to quality & nutrition.

Ruffingtons announces Scott Mills as brand ambassador

Ruffingtons, the handcrafted artisan baked dog treats brand owned by Fold Hill Foods, has announced that TV presenter, pet parent, and BBC Radio 2 DJ, Scott Mills, has officially joined the company as its brand ambassador...

Ruffingtons, the handcrafted artisan baked dog treats brand owned by Fold Hill Foods, has announced that TV presenter, pet parent, and BBC Radio 2 DJ, Scott Mills, has officially joined the company as its brand ambassador.

With an illustrious broadcasting career spanning over 30 years, Scott has entertained millions with his wit and warmth on both radio and television. Most recently hosting Eurovision along with Rylan Clark. But what truly sets Scott apart is his dedication as a dog parent, especially to his beloved companion Teddy, a four-year-old Cavapoo.

This genuine love for dogs makes Scott the ideal partner to represent Ruffingtons – a brand committed to celebrating the joy and bond shared between pets and their owners. For when words aren’t enough.

Scott Mills said: “What Ruffingtons offers is something unique. In a world where people are liking to celebrate their dogs much more, they’ve filled a real gap in the market. Teddy loves their Dog Eclairs!

“Teddy is funny, affectionate, and could almost be human. He rolls on carpets, loves cuddles, and sometimes barks at the TV – though that’s improving. When me and Sam were on Race Across the World, he became oddly fascinated by that, perhaps because he could recognise our voices.

“With my job, I go from early mornings, to interviewing some of the biggest celebrities in the world, and it can be quite overwhelming. But coming home to Teddy for normal evenings is grounding and it’s calming and reassuring to know he will be there.”

In February, Scott joined a star-studded lineup of celebrities, media, and influencers at Ruffingtons’ London launch party. Guests enjoyed an afternoon tea for dogs while learning firsthand from Ruffingtons parent company Fold Hill about the inspiration behind Ruffingtons and our dedication to crafting exceptional dog treats.

As a Ruffingtons brand ambassador, Scott will also be showcasing Ruffingtons to his nearly 500,000 social media followers throughout the year.

Cassandra Brennan, Marketing Manager for Ruffingtons, commented: “Having Scott Mills on board is a fantastic milestone for Ruffingtons so early in our launch. His passion for pets and his genuine connection with dog owners everywhere perfectly reflects what our brand stands for.

“At Ruffingtons, we pride ourselves on creating treats made with the finest ingredients, crafted with care to bring joy in every bite. Together with Scott, we hope to inspire more pet parents to spoil their furry friends with the love and indulgence they deserve.”

The Ruffingtons team warmly welcomes Scott Mills to the family and looks forward to a wonderful partnership ahead.

Ethical canine learning platform teams up with natural supplement brand to put pets first

A leading ethical dog training platform has announced a new partnership with a natural pet supplements brand, in a move set to benefit dogs and their guardians across the UK...

A leading ethical dog training platform has announced a new partnership with a natural pet supplements brand, in a move set to benefit dogs and their guardians across the UK.

Canine Principles, a respected online learning hub for pet professionals and dog owners, has joined forces with Nature’s Pet, a trusted name in natural canine health supplements created by the family-run firm Nature’s Zest.

The partnership will see the two organisations collaborate on product development — with Canine Principles providing expert input and approval, as well as offering exclusive discounts to the platform’s learners, making trusted supplements like Mellow Pet more accessible.

Jo Middleton, founder of Canine Principles, said: “At Canine Principles, we’re all about understanding dogs on a deeper level, beyond behaviour, into the emotional experiences behind it.

“Nature’s Pet shares our values. Their products are about supporting dogs in a kind, thoughtful way, which aligns perfectly with what we teach. We’re thrilled to be working with them.”

Canine Principles has earned a reputation for creating high-quality, evidence-based courses on everything from welcoming rescue dogs and helping them settle in emotionally, to understanding complex behaviours like reactivity. Their ethos is rooted in empathy, not punishment, a philosophy that resonates with many pet parents and professionals seeking kinder approaches.

Jason Layton, founder of Nature’s Pet, said the partnership would ensure even greater value and reassurance for their customers.

“We started Nature’s Pet to create supplements that genuinely help dogs live better lives, using natural ingredients and backed by expertise.

"Partnering with Canine Principles means we can take that commitment to the next level, working directly with professionals who know dogs inside and out. It’s an exciting step forward.”

Nature’s Pet, which was developed under the umbrella of Nature’s Zest, already has a loyal customer base thanks to its transparent, results-focused approach.

The company’s popular calming blend, Mellow Pet, is especially praised by owners for its gentle effectiveness.

With the backing of Canine Principles’ training team,  Nature's Pet can now offer even more tailored support, all rooted in compassion, education, and natural care.

This latest collaboration is likely to be welcomed by those in the animal welfare and pet care sectors who are calling for higher standards and greater transparency in both training and supplements.

Initiative to safeguard Scotland's search and rescue dogs

The Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) has teamed up with MSD Animal Health to provide Scotland’s heroic search and rescue dogs with year-round flea and tick protection as millions are estimated to flock to the Scottish Highlands this year...

The Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) has teamed up with MSD Animal Health to provide Scotland’s heroic search and rescue dogs with year-round flea and tick protection as millions are estimated to flock to the Scottish Highlands this year.

With over 2.29 million overnight visits to the Scottish Highlands in 2023 and 38% of Scotland’s 109 million tourists seeking to connect with nature*, ensuring the safety of visitors flooding to the beautiful Scottish outdoors is more important than ever.

Scotland’s search and rescue dogs play a vital role in protecting those exploring the region’s rugged landscapes, but they themselves face risks — including increased exposure to disease-carrying parasites like fleas and ticks.

To safeguard these heroic dogs, SARDA has partnered with MSD Animal Health, to provide year-round flea and tick prevention. By protecting the dogs, they in turn can continue protecting the millions of people who rely on them in emergencies.

This partnership will ensure that SARDA’s dogs remain healthy, resilient, and ready to respond whenever they are needed most.

“Our search and rescue dogs work tirelessly in challenging environments to help find those in need - but to do this important job, they need to stay healthy and protected,” shares Mark Chadwick, from SARDA.

“Fleas and ticks pose a real risk to our dogs, and we tend to see an increase in cases throughout the warmer months. Year-round prevention is essential, and thanks to this generous donation from MSD Animal Health, we can ensure our dogs remain fit for duty and ready to save lives whenever they’re needed.”

Sian Stockford, a veterinary surgeon and technical lead at MSD Animal Health, states why working with your vet is important when choosing parasite protection.

“Flea and tick protection can be prescribed by a vet in the form of 1 or 3 monthly chewable tablets or spot-on’s, or a 1 yearly injection. Working closely with your vet to identify the right protection for you and your pets’ lifestyle needs is important to ensure you stay disease free.”

Every day, search and rescue teams risk their lives to locate missing individuals across Scotland’s toughest terrains. In fact, over the past four years, SARDA has conducted more than 150 searches, spending over 3,300 hours in the field.

These missions are only possible with the support of highly trained rescue dogs — who are at risk of contracting serious illnesses such as babesiosis and Lyme disease without sufficient parasite protection.

SARDA and MSD Animal Health are committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of Scotland’s search and rescue dogs. By providing consistent, year-round flea and tick prevention, these lifesaving animals can continue their vital work without the risk of contracting preventable diseases.

PetQuip to host British group at Pet Fair South East Asia

Following a successful debut at the event in 2024, trade association PetQuip will be hosting a UK group at this year’s event, taking place from 29 to 31 October in Bangkok...

Following a successful debut at the event in 2024, trade association PetQuip will be hosting a UK group at this year’s event, taking place from 29 to 31 October in Bangkok.

British pet products are highly regarded in South East Asia, particularly in more affluent markets and among pet owners seeking high-quality, health-focused, and premium products.

Pet Fair South East Asia originated four years ago as a virtual event and has grown into an industry experience platform. In 2024 the event hosted over 400 exhibitors from 32 countries and 10,000 trade visitors from more than 80 countries.

Pet Fair South East Asia promises a dynamic and welcoming environment for the UK group, with a central, prime location along the main aisle.

Emma Brazier, Event Manager for PetQuip, commented: “Pet Fair South East Asia offers British companies a valuable opportunity to gain access to a rapidly expanding and diverse market. With growing demand for premium pet products and a strong appreciation of quality, this event provides a platform to showcase products, forge partnerships, and gather insights that will help expand a British brand’s presence in South East Asia. The fair serves as an ideal launch pad for entering or growing within this increasingly lucrative market.”

PetQuip is offering pre-show and on-site support, with fully designed stands, ready for companies to simply turn up and display their products.

Additionally, a series of scheduled press releases and a preview will promote the British group to key buyers and international media.

In 2024, the British group, organised by PetQuip, made an incredibly successful debut, with five exhibitors: Scruffs, James & Steel, Pets Choice, Huntland Pet Food and Animology.

Chris Keightley from Pets Choice reflected: “The reception we received for our products at Pet Fair South East Asia far exceeded our expectations. It was clear that South East Asia values the innovation and quality that come with British products and we received a warm welcome. We have already seen strong demand for our range across several countries as a direct result of our participation."

OATA has welcomed its new Finance and Office Manager Dawn Jones, who will take over from Ray Valovec when he leaves in June.

Dawn joins from Goodings Accountants where she was Personal Tax Manager and Client Manager for a number of years. She brings her excellent accounting and administration skills to OATA’s Westbury office, where she will be the first point of contact for anyone getting in touch with the trade body. In her spare time, she volunteers at a local horse sanctuary and enjoys horseriding.

Dawn said: “I’ve very pleased to be joining the team and am really looking forward to the variety the job promises.”

Ray retires from OATA after 25 years keeping the Wiltshire-based office running smoothly and efficiently, having joined the team in March 2000. He’s been a mainstay in the organisation, keeping a beady eye on financial matters and has been the first port of call for OATA members. During his time at OATA he has organised and run OATA conferences and acted as Director of the AQUA trade show during its first 10 years of operation.

Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee said: “We are certainly going to miss Ray who has been the backbone of our office for many years. We wish him well in his retirement – he’s certainly earned it! And we are very happy to have Dawn join us. She is now benefiting from a six-week handover from Ray to help her hit the ground running when he leaves. I’m sure our members will join us in making her feel welcome to the office team.”

Global animal housing provider CASCO Pet has appointed Avi Solomon as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to drive product development and technological innovation.

The newly created position strengthens CASCO Pet’s executive team as the company continues its aggressive growth strategy and expands its global market presence across the veterinary and pet retail sectors.

Solomon is a founding member of Modern Animal, a former product manager at IDEXX, and a former veterinary nurse. He brings with him more than two decades of hands-on experience advancing veterinary care through innovative design and technology.

As CTO, he will be responsible for developing CASCO Pet’s technology ecosystem – advancing artificial intelligence (AI) integration, data analytics and connected devices. With a focus on real-world clinical application, Solomon will lead product design and development to drive impactful, practical innovations that can be integrated into existing workflows, to maximise clinical relevance and effectiveness.

Solomon said: “After 25 years in the veterinary industry, I’ve learned that real breakthroughs grow from compassion and a respect for the day-to-day realities of practice. CASCO Pet couples a proven business with a bold spirit of innovation, and that combination is rare. I’m honoured to be joining the team to help build on this great work, spark new ideas, and deliver tools that lighten clinicians’ workloads while improving life for pets and their families.”

Commenting on his appointment, CASCO Pet CEO Matthew Bubear added: “Avi is a real asset to the team. His considerable expertise in building tools that streamline clinical operations, improve patient outcomes and set new industry standards aligns perfectly with our business mission and values.

“We revolutionised veterinary clinical housing with the introduction of WELLKennels and we are excited to build on this innovation to further advance pet wellness and improve the working lives of veterinarians.”

Solomon’s extensive clinical background in emergency and critical care has guided his practical approach to innovation. As Head of Product at Modern Animal he led the creation of integrated electronic medical records, client-facing apps and systems connecting hospitals to external services.

Prior to that, he worked at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital, where he used technology to guide clinical operations, developed the first veterinary-adapted blood bank management system and co-founded global educational platform, atdove.org.

CASCO Pet provides innovative animal housing solutions for veterinary practices, pet retail spaces and education facilities. The new owner of leading Midlands-based raw pet food manufacturer, Albion Pet Foods, has heavily invested in the company since taking it over from the previous owners as part of plans to expand the retail arm of the business.

Albion Pet Products is one of the longest established raw food manufacturers in the UK and remained a family owned business for nearly 40 years. Renowned for its quality and variety of products, personal customer care and expertise in the raw food arena, the company proved to be an attractive proposition when it came up for sale for successful business owner and entrepreneur, Gill Bower.

Gill had already run a successful manufacturing business in the North East for 24 years and due to her in interest in dogs’ health, supplements and immunotherapy, she felt that the purchase of Albion would be a good way to bring out a range of good quality support supplements at realistic prices alongside quality pet food products.

Since taking over Albion, Gill has moved the manufacturing side of the pet food to a new plant in Warwickshire so that the whole process can be closely monitored from manufacturing to distribution.

Gill said: “We believe that we manufacture a great quality product using excellent quality ingredients. We only want to sell products which I’d be happy feeding to my own dogs. I currently own 9 Irish Setters and 1 Springer Spaniel.

“We aim to offer a good customer service to both retailers and consumers. Albion sources human grade ingredients from DEFRA approved farms and probably has the most comprehensive range of raw food recipes on the market.

"As well as a Standard Range and a Pure Meat Range, we also offer Complete recipes, life stage meals, a Chunky Range and a Freeflow Range which makes it easier to portion out the mince and then put the packet back in the freezer for future use. We also offer frozen fish and a comprehensive range of natural treats.

"We offer a select range of products which are only available to the trade. We are passionate about finding more independent retailers who care about quality pet nutrition and we feel that this is an extra service we can offer as our commitment to the trade.”

As well as investing in a new manufacturing plant, Gill has also used her marketing background to create a stylish rebrand for Albion which includes attractive new modern packaging, and an updated website. They also have branded freezers which are available to stockists.

The dedication to the trade will shortly see the appointment of a new sales manager who will be joining from a major player in the raw food market. His job will be to expand the 217 stockists that Albion currently has around the country.

Gill added: “We are extremely optimistic about the future. The raw food market continues to grow year on year by a minimum of 10% and the changes we have made will mean that Albion is best placed to meet the demands of such a growing market.”

Jollyes stores ready for the big cat takeover

Pet superstore Jollyes has significantly expanded its cat ranges, updating its stores to offer 48% more items after internal data showed feline food sales have been rising ahead of canine equivalents...

Pet superstore Jollyes has significantly expanded its cat ranges, updating its stores to offer 48% more items after internal data showed feline food sales have been rising ahead of canine equivalents.

According to UK Pet Food in 2024, 29% of all households owned a cat compared to 36% with dogs, According to the same data, there are currently 12.5m pet cats in the UK compared to 13.5m pet dogs, but Jollyes believes if trends for smaller pets continue, the number of cats could overtake dogs in the next couple of years.

Between 2021 and 2024, household dog ownership has risen from 33% to 36% and cat ownership from 27%to 29% but the rise in multi-cat households means the gap between the number of cats and dogs is closing – a visible trend from Jollyes own sales data.

And to emphasise the significant switch, Jollyes today also erected new in-store signage showing that the cat takeover is just around the corner.

Statistics show that around one in four homes in the UK owns a cat and the number of Millennial and Gen Z cat owners has risen dramatically in recent years – with 41% of those aged between 18 and 34 now sharing their home with at least one cat.

Increased ownership among younger cat lovers, and a rise in the proportion (25%) of men who for the first time now have the same proportion of cats as women, is set to tip the scales and make cats the most common household pet in the next couple of years.

The rise in cat ownership is also being driven by a preference for smaller pets, both cats and dogs, as well as the ease of looking after a cat compared to the higher maintenance of a dog.

High profile cat lovers such as Taylor Swift, Ricky Gervais, Dermot O’Leary, Kate Beckinsale and Bob Mortimer, are also driving the trend towards owning a cat.

With the rise in cat ownership, Jollyes is dramatically expanding its feline-focused offer.

For the last 12 months, new buyer Louise Fawcett, has led a revolutionary change and expansion of Jollyes cat range which included Jollyes creating a cat committee of store colleagues who were cat parents.

And the cat committee were clear – they wanted to see more big brands more Friday night indulgent products helping cat owners treat their cats for less.

So, from today, Jollyes’ customers can take advantage of a whole litter of new brands, including gut-friendly cat food brand and Gen Z favourite Scrumbles, as well as other popular premium brands such as Applaws, Gourmet, Cookhouse and Lily’s Kitchen.

In a UK retail first, Jollyes will also be introducing an open market veterinary diet range, which has been developed in partnership with vet-founded pet food brand Calibra.

This range will provide vet-approved meals which help support the four most common health issues for cats – diabetes, gastrointestinal support, renal and urinary crystals.

What’s more Jollyes has also strengthened its private label cat ranges with its newly launched Riley’s Divine Snap pots as well as giving cat customers more choice with smaller 12 packs of Rileys for £2.67 for both cats and kittens.

Jollyes’ stores layouts have been updated so its range of cat products are visible upon entry to its stores – making it easier for first-time and returning cat-owning customers to find the items they need alongside the low-cost veterinary services such as microchipping and vaccinations provided at its community pet clinics.

Over the coming weeks, Jollyes is also planning to introduce an extended offer in treats, toys and accessories for cats and new ranges in frozen food.

This upcoming range expansion follows on from the successful launch of Jollyes’ canine frozen food range and Raw Store shop-in-shops, which won a prestigious 2025 Retail Week Award earlier this year.

Jollyes’ cat buyer Louise Fawcett said: “We want to make Jollyes the ultimate destination for cat-owners across the UK – and our expanded and extensive range is the first step in achieving this.

“What’s more alongside the extended ranges, we’re adding more training for colleagues as they offer advice for the nation’s cats.

“Whether you’re a seasoned cat carer or having kittens at the responsibility of looking after your fur baby, Jollyes is the place to go - both for our colleagues’ unrivalled expertise and our fantastic, affordable and rapidly expanding product range.”

Jollyes was named as one of The Sunday Times’ best big companies to work for last year, and earlier this year won the Retail Week Award for Head Office Heroes following its highly successful raw frozen food roll out.
