Independent pet firm strikes deal with retail giant

Pawsome Paws Boutique, an independent business creating original dog accessories, has released an exclusive collection with high-end department store chain John Lewis & Partners.

The brands met at a Product Guru event earlier this year, and instantly saw the opportunity to create a collaboration that would appeal to both customer bases.

The ‘Teal Leopard’ collection has launched online as well as in physical stores up and down the country, and consists of adjustable harnesses, collars, bow ties, leads, poo bag holders and PPB’s Tough Trails harness design.

John Lewis stores stocking the collaboration include High Wycombe, Oxford Street, Kingston, Cardiff, Cheadle, Peter Jones, and PPB’s hometown of Leeds.

PPB owner Sophie Chesman, who founded the business in 2016, said: “This is a dream come true. Working with such a prestigious brand like John Lewis has really validated all the hard work my team and I have put into the business over the years. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from our customers either, it’s a fantastic community we’ve created through our social media.”

Sophie started the business from her bedroom and has grown it to a team of seven with a headquarters in Leeds.

Sophie’s husband Jason, who joined PPB full time at the start of 2022, said: “Working with John Lewis is a testament to all the hard work Sophie has put into the business over the years. From converting the spare bedroom into a workshop, the late nights and early mornings, sometimes through the night sewing away on the machine to get the orders out of the door. I’m a very proud husband.”

Pawsome Paws Boutique saw sales explode during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, with ‘dog mums’ desperate to pamper their beloved pooches during lockdown.

Sophie Chesman, 30, set up the business while fitting it in alongside her job in car sales, before being able to go full time with the business after just four months.

"It was a bit of an accident, really," she said. "I started off hand-making a lot of dog-related products, stuff like personalised dog lead hooks. I made them as presents for family, then people would start asking me for them when I posted them on Facebook.

"It got to the point where it got really busy with the handmade products. I was sewing dog collars and bandanas and stuff like that, until the early hours of the morning. That's when I quit my job. Then about two years in, we went down the process of getting our products manufactured."

Sophie said that after the start of the pandemic, the business started getting around 20 times the number of orders. This led to husband Jason also giving up his job at an engineering firm to help out with the business, while the two rented out a warehouse in Leeds, and took on extra members of staff.

So what does Sophie think has been driving all the interest in their products?

"We have gone down the road of doing a lot of 'dog mum' stuff, like dog walking leggings to match the dog accessories, dog walking bags and phone cases, so all the dog mums can match their dogs.

"I feel a lot of people are obsessed with their dogs. I used to think it was women who haven't yet had children, but it is also women whose kids have left home who are obsessed with their dogs again.

"Since lockdown, so many people treat dogs as part of the family. When I was younger, your dog would have a bed and a collar, and sleep downstairs, but a lot of people treat their dogs like little humans now.

"Sales went through the roof during the pandemic, due to the fact that everyone was getting dogs, everyone was off work and the only thing we could actually do was walk our dogs. That is when it kicked off and got busier."

So what's the secret to the business's success?

"I think people like our harnesses because the only other thing on the market is really boring stuff that is really plain, whereas we do really fun patterns.

"Dogs have such big personalities, but they are often expected to wear these really boring accessories."

Sophie has two dogs herself: Reuben, seven, is a cavalier crossed with a poodle, while Betsy, six, is a cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle.

"They inspired me to set up the business," said Sophie. "I was forever spending so much money on them, spoiling them absolutely rotten, but at the time there wasn't that much you could really buy for them, so they inspired me to make all my own products.

"They come to work with us every day, and they are very badly behaved!"

Football legend opens new pet superstore in Dorset

Football legend Harry Redknapp and his wife Sandra officially opened the new Jollyes store in Poole’s Wessex Gate East Retail Park on Saturday...

Football legend Harry Redknapp officially opened the new Jollyes store in Poole’s Wessex Gate East Retail Park on Saturday.

Customers turned out in force as Harry and his wife Sandra cut the ribbon to mark the occasion. They were accompanied by their bulldog Barney.

Also at the opening was BCP Council chair Cllr Nigel Hedges, while the Rev Bryony Morrison of St James’ Church conducted a blessing for dogs and their owners who turned out to see the event.

Matt Godwin, regional manager for Jollyes, said: “It was amazing to see the pet parents of Poole turn out in force for the opening of our first store in Dorset – and a special thanks to Barney – and of course his mum and dad – for coming to open the store.”

Jollyes has announced more details of the ranges available at the new store, including dog and cat food, toys and accessories, food, treats and accessories for small pets, birds and fish. It will include Jollyes’ exclusive Lifestage dog food range, including dry food, trays and cans and its premium Lifestage Artisan dry food.

In the weeks after opening, the store will also host a Community Pet Clinic, offering regular health checks, vaccinations, flea and worming and microchipping.

As the first Jollyes store in Dorset, the Poole store will complement Jollyes outlets in neighbouring counties of Hampshire, Somerset, Devon and Wiltshire, including Bridgwater, Chippenham, Congresbury, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Waterlooville.

Jollyes prepares to open two more stores in Scotland

Jollyes has announced details of two new store openings in Scotland as part of a £950,000 investment this year taking it to five Scottish stores...

Jollyes has announced details of two new store openings in Scotland as part of a £950,000 investment this year taking it to five Scottish stores.

The latest Jollyes stores will open at Glenrothes, Fife, on Saturday 24 September and Edinburgh in the Autumn.

The two new stores follow the opening of Jollyes in Stirling in June and build on the popularity with local pet lovers of the long-standing stores at Clydebank and Perth.

Together, the three new openings take Jollyes’ total investment in Scotland this year to almost £1m, creating 34 new jobs and taking the total number of colleagues in Scotland to 55.

The 5,000 square feet Glenrothes store at Saltire Retail Park will employ 10 colleagues. Jollyes today announced that the team would be led by store manager Garry Bingham, 35, an experienced retailer who grew up in the town.

Garry (pictured right) is doting ‘dog parent’ to the newest addition to his family, Lilly, a 10-week golden Labrador.

At 7,500 square feet, the Edinburgh store, at Hermiston Gait Retail Park, will have 15 colleagues and will also feature Jollyes’ high quality dog grooming salon, The Spa.  The store manager at Hermiston Gait will be Angela Rennie who is moving from Stirling where she led the team behind this year’s successful opening. Angela is pet parent to dogs Blue and Mollie.

Both new stores will sell small animals, as well as a wide range of pet foods and accessories. As part of its opening plans, Jollyes has begun recruiting for colleagues at the new stores. Applications from those who want a dream job working with ainimals can be made at https://www.jollyes.co.uk/i/jobs-jollyes.

Kerry Midgley, Jollyes regional manager, said: “Scots love their pets and where we have a store, Jollyes has become the go-to destination for pet owners. We’re continuing to look at other locations and strongly believe Scotland will be an important area of growth for Jollyes in the future.”

“The investment we’re making at Glenrothes and Edinburgh builds on the success of our existing stores and with five stores across Scotland we are now starting to create a significant footprint and becoming a name that will become increasingly familiar.”

School leavers urged to consider career in animal care

A leading awarding organisation is urging students to consider a career in pet grooming to help plug a national shortage.

There is a shortage of dog groomers nationwide, meaning that a career as a groomer can be both rewarding and lucrative, but top quality training is essential.

Committed to improving and supporting animal industries, the iPET Network is the first port of call for anyone considering a career in animal care.

And following an upsurge in the number of 'must groom' pets, thanks to the popularity of breeds such as labradoodle and cockapoo, now is the time to work with animals in a fun and creative career.

Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty, who founded the iPET Network, said: "Working with animals and running their own business is at the top of many school leavers' wish list, and for others dog grooming could be a great place to start on the road to a career as a vet.

"Pet groomers are a key player in preserving animal welfare in this country, and it is our belief that all of our pet groomers should be qualified to a high standard, for the safety of animals, and so that we can continue to have pride in our fantastic industries."

As well as grooming, the iPET Network has a portfolio of other animal care courses, such as canine nutrition, canine first aid and breeding.

Learners qualify ready to start their own business, in industries where you can make your career as big or small as you wish.

Sarah and Fern added: " The iPET Network’s aim is to be the Awarding Organisation of choice for Training Providers, Employers and Learners in the Animal Care and Veterinary Science Sector.

"Our mission is to improve animal welfare through education and boost animal care professions with high quality industry-led training."

Dog-loving Brits spend £4,000 a year on pooches
...but forget low-cost kit to keep them safe in cars

New research by ŠKODA UK has revealed that Britain’s dog lovers spend more than £4,000 per year on their pet, but just half safely secure their dog on every car journey...

New research by ŠKODA UK has revealed that Britain’s dog lovers spend more than £4,000 per year on their pet, but just half safely secure their dog on every car journey.

To mark International Dog Day tomorrow (August 26), ŠKODA, in partnership with BorrowMyDoggy – a national organisation that connects dog owners with trusted local people to help take care of their dogs – is highlighting how simple solutions can help keep dogs safe on the move.

Of the estimated 9.6 million dog owners in the UK, ŠKODA research revealed more than seven million travel with their dog in the car at least once a week. However, just 51% said they always correctly secured their dog while driving, with 14% only doing it some of the time and 9% admitting that they have never secured their dog safely in the car.

The nation’s dog owners spend an average of £4,087.20 on their pooches, with food, pet insurance and edible treats the main outlay, but are risking doubling this cost for not securing pets safely when on the move. Nearly half (44%) are unaware of current laws around travelling with a dog in the car which can lead to a fine of up to £5,000 and invalid insurance.

According to the Highway Code, dogs need to be suitably secured so they avoid distracting the driver and to prevent injury in the case of a sudden stop.

The ŠKODA dog study revealed 12% of owners let their dogs sit on their lap or even on the dash (9%) while driving, while some let their dogs move freely around the car. This figure was even more pronounced among younger drivers (18-24 years old), with over a quarter (27%) letting their dog sit on their lap while driving.

In total, 68% of drivers said they drove more carefully with their dog in the car, though nearly a quarter (24%) said they found themselves to be more stressed.

ŠKODA has teamed up with BorrowMyDoggy to give tips to dog-lovers on the best way to travel in the car with a dog:

  1. Keep dogs on a lead when getting in and out of a car
  2. Securely fasten your dog in the car with a harness or in-car carrier
  3. Keep toys, food and water on-hand, for example in the glovebox
  4. In-car dog accessories make travelling much more secure and comfortable, such as the ŠKODA rear-seat dog hammock
  5. Extras like blankets and dog beds can help to keep a dog calm and relaxed
  6. Take regular breaks for fresh air and to allow your dog to stretch their legs (and yourself)
  7. Never leave your dog in the car on a warm day, even if you have parked in the shade

When thinking about their car, dog owners said that the most important aspects were firstly that it should be easy for the dog to get in and out (60%), followed by good boot size (51%), interior space (44%) and durable materials (43%).

Combined with ŠKODA’s extensive range of dog accessories, the KAMIQ – and entire ŠKODA range – ensures dog owners can rest easy knowing they have a spacious and practical car that keeps their dog safe and comfortable on every journey, with enough clever storage spaces for the extra items that are needed when travelling with pets.

Global veterinary telehealth service launches in UK

The world’s fastest growing veterinary telehealth service Vetster is officially launching across the UK market, following its success in North America...

The world’s fastest growing veterinary telehealth service Vetster is officially launching across the UK market, following its success in North America.

Vetster connects licensed UK veterinarians with pet owners via video, voice and online chat to address non-urgent pet care issues. The service aims to reduce the critical shortage to pet healthcare facing the UK, where one in two veterinary clinics are overbooked and unable to take on more patients.

A new study revealed that the biggest challenge UK veterinary clinics faced was the volume of pets (57%), followed by being overbooked (50%) and unable to take on new patients[1]. Previous reports also show that 37%[2] of vets are “actively” thinking about quitting, with 80%[3] of the UK profession leaving to get a better work-life balance.

“We are experiencing a global crisis in pet care exacerbated by the pandemic,” said Mark Bordo, CEO and coFounder of Vetster.

“Veterinarians are facing tremendous pressure to provide services to millions of pet owners. Vetster’s virtual care platform connects pet owners with licensed UK veterinarians to provide support when their clinic is closed, to answer a non-urgent question, and to improve the health outcomes of their pet and help ensure owners can care for their animals.”

Vetster empowers veterinarians to create a virtual care practice that provides teletriage, addresses non-urgent issues, and provides pet owners with answers to their questions. The most common cases treated by Vetster veterinarians are dermatology, gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary tract, ophthalmology and musculoskeletal issues. By diverting these cases to licensed UK veterinarians online, Vetster aims to relieve the pressure on clinics so that clinics can serve pets in need of surgery, immunisations, bloodwork and other clinical treatments.

“Veterinarians are able to incorporate a new modality of practice to improve their work-life-balance, serve pet owners outside of a clinic environment, and hopefully practice for longer avoiding burnout and stress associated with this much-needed profession,” continued Bordo.

The pet telehealth service has been operating in North America for more than two years and recently entered the UK market attracting both top-rated licensed veterinarians and customers to use virtual care for their pets. Since that time, veterinarians using the platform to deliver virtual care services, have treated more than 20 common pet health concerns with 97% of appointments resulting in a positive outcome for the pet and pet owner.

Veterinarians seeking to explore virtual care, can visit https://vetster.com/en-gb/for-vets

Veterinary practices seeking to provide after-hours support to clients, can visit https://vetster.com/en-ca/for-vet-clinics

Celebrating International Dog Day tomorrow (August 26), Leaps & Bounds has partnered with Dogs Trust to donate £1 for every promotional bottle sold after consumer research revealed that over a quarter (26%) of dog owners prefer to drink wine at home while in the company of their dogs.

Exclusively available in Sainsbury’s from 26th August, the Australian wine, inspired by heroic dogs of the world, is on a mission to give back to its (canine) community, partnering with the UK’s largest dog welfare charity.

The research conducted exclusively with dog owners nationwide also unveiled that 30% of those asked feel more relaxed drinking when in the company of their pup. Furthermore, nearly 8 in 10 (79%) consciously try to involve their dogs in their social lives, with half (50%) admitting to having more fun socially since getting a dog.

This initiative starts a year-long partnership with Dogs Trust to continually raise awareness of their inspiring work on behalf of all their dogs, from rehoming to rehabilitation. The exclusive promotion with Sainsbury’s is the first towards a long-standing partnership which starts with an initial donation of £35,000.

Since its launch, Leaps & Bounds has been making the wine experience fun and telling exciting tales on the bottle. Leaps & Bounds Sauvignon Blanc (2021) is the pack’s newest member. A wine inspired by the first dog to travel across America by car, Bud. It expels tropical characteristics of melon, guava and kiwi fruit with citrus and is perfectly paired with fresh seafood or chicken.

Fancy a red? Leaps & Bounds Shiraz (2020) is laden with bright, fresh fruit flavours and a soft finish. This medium-bodied delight highlights a masterless dog named Bob, who travelled thousands of miles as a faithful companion to many train drivers and engineers across southern Australia in the latter part of the 19th century. The wine pairs with Italian dishes, barbequed vegetables, and hard cheeses.

Victoria Bryksa, Leaps & Bounds brand ambassador, said: “We saw wine (and dog) lovers’ enthusiasm for this playful, unique brand come to life, and we are so excited to be partnering with Dogs Trust to solidify our mission to hero dogs from around the world and support the charity in its incredible campaign to rehome dogs across the UK. More than just a wine, Leaps & Bounds has dogs at its heart, so this partnership is the start of an exciting journey combining delicious wine and incredible dogs.”

Owen Sharp, Dogs Trust CEO, said: “We’re pleased to partner with Leaps & Bounds to help us in our mission to bring about the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life. Initiatives like this are essential to help us look after the dogs in our care and find them their forever homes.”

Charity warns of a looming housing crisis for dogs

Dogs Trust has warned that the sky-high cost of essentials, such as eating and heating, is leaving many owners unable to provide for their pets...

Dogs Trust has warned that the sky-high cost of essentials, such as eating and heating, is leaving many owners unable to provide for their pets.

With adoption numbers dropping because people can’t afford to take on a new dog, this has the potential to lead to a housing crisis for the nation’s dogs.

Over recent months, Dogs Trust has received a record number of calls from people asking the charity to take in their dogs, in the face of the new cost of everyday living. Enquiries to give up a dog have increased to the highest level since its records began, with 4,370 inquiries received in July 2022.

There’s been a notable increase in the number of people calling in for financial reasons, citing problems such as huge increases in their regular monthly bills, such as energy and mortgage payments, as the reason why they can no longer afford doggy basics such as food, which has also itself increased in price.

In addition, our monthly poll of the UK’s dog owners, run by YouGov, shows that 40% of respondents this month thought they would find it more difficult to give their dog all they needed, compared to before the cost-of-living crisis began.

Vet bills continued to cause the most worry; over half (51%) of dog owners said vet bills were currently their biggest financial canine concern for the coming year. One in five (20%) was most worried about the cost of dog food, while 15% named insurance as their lead worry.

The number of owners contacting Dogs Trust to enquire about giving up their dog is sky-rocketing – we have seen the number of enquiries from owners needing to give up their dogs rising to its highest level since its Contact Centre opened in 2014, with 4,370 handover enquiries received in July alone; a trend which is increasing month-on month, and has doubled compared to the start of 2021.

Meanwhile, when non-dog owners were asked, as part of the August poll, whether the rising cost of living would prevent them from adopting or buying a dog, six out of ten (61%) said it would.

Owen Sharp, Dogs Trust CEO, says: “The UK is fast heading towards a situation in which, due to the cost-of-living crisis, we’ll have a surplus of dogs whose owners need to give them up, but a deficit of people who can afford to take on a new dog.

“Dogs Trust is issuing an urgent call for emergency foster carers, especially people with experience of caring for big dogs, who can provide a port in a storm to a dog who, for the moment, has nowhere else to go. If you can help, we urge you to get in touch with us and help look after the nation’s dogs through this crisis.”

“Likewise, if you’re struggling to afford looking after your own dog, Dogs Trust will do all it can to help. I’m afraid we can’t promise miracles, but we’re always here to listen without judgement, talk through the options and give dog owners the benefit of our expert knowledge.”

Dogs Trust is urgently seeking fosterers – experienced dog owners who can offer temporary homes to dogs in need.  For more information visit www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/fostering

Paleo Ridge team raises £1,400+ for charity

The executive team at Paleo Ridge completed the Three Peaks Challenge earlier this month to fundraise for Many Tears Animal Rescue (MTAR).

The Paleo Ridge team taking part – including CEO Tyler Daly, Director of Sales and Marketing Will Green, Director of Supply Chain Chris Jones and Head of Operations Dainius Kinta – climbed the highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland, and raised more than £1,400.

Setting off at 6am on the day, the team climbed Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis, with the latter being the tallest at 1,345metres high. The total walking distance covered during the challenge was 23 miles and the total ascent was 3,064metres.

Taking on the Three Peaks Challenge for charity is part of Paleo Ridge’s commitment to supporting those in need. The brand has worked with Many Tears Animal Rescue for over 6 years. MTAR is a charity based in Wales that supports dogs in foster homes across the UK, predominantly re-homing ex-breeding dogs who have been discarded but also recuing those on ‘death row’ at local dog pounds and those whose owners can no longer care for them.

Tyler Daly, CEO of Paleo Ridge, said: “I’m very happy to be supporting Many Tears Rescue in taking on the Three Peaks Challenge. It’s something we all agreed would be a serious task to complete and we set out to raise as much as possible for the great work that Many Tears Rescue do. When we were tired, dehydrated and sore at points of the climb, it was the thought of the dogs at Many Tears Rescue or awaiting their help that helped us to push through the challenge.”

Pets in lets: Top tips for renting with furry friends

PDSA vet Nina Downing shares her advice for keeping homes in tip-top condition when living with furry family members...

The UK is undoubtedly a nation of animal lovers, with recent research from PDSA, the vet charity for pets in need, finding that more than half of British adults own a pet (52 per cent).

Recent government proposals mean that landlords must consider any request for pets to live in their property and allow tenants to challenge their decision, which will be welcome news to many pet owners.

However, a boost in the number of pets living in rented properties does increase the potential for accidental damage. Here, PDSA vet Nina Downing shares her advice for keeping homes in tip-top condition when living with furry family members.

Chewing and scratching

Scratching and chewing are instinctive behaviours but aren’t ideal when directed towards furniture, walls or carpets. These habits can stem from boredom, so it’s important that pets are well exercised and have plenty of things to keep them stimulated.

Scratching posts are great for playful cats, while interactive puzzle toys that dispense treats will keep both cats and dogs entertained – just remember to change toys regularly to keep it exciting. Indoor rabbits will also need lots of opportunities to play and dig like they would in the wild.

Chewing is natural for dogs and completely normal, but destructive behaviour can sometimes be a sign of separation anxiety. Dogs are naturally social animals and can become stressed if they’re left alone, so teaching independence early on can help to stop the problem developing. If you think your adult dog suffers from separation anxiety, you should speak to your vet or an accredited behaviourist for advice.

Each dog’s coping ability is different, but no dog should be left alone for more than four hours. If you are planning to spend longer out of the house, ask a friend to pop in, or use a professional dog-sitting or walking service to keep them company.

All dogs should be given the chance to chew if they want to, so make sure they have plenty of safe toys for this. For extra prevention against pesky bite marks where you don’t want them, a safe chew-repellent will help protect furniture and fittings around the home. These have a bitter taste that discourages chewing – but remember they’re a temporary solution and you must help your dog to learn they need to chew the right things instead.

Stains

Preparation is key here. If your dog loves getting mucky outside, keep a towel near the doorway for a quick clean before they enter and try to keep them on hard floors while they dry off, as this will keep smells at bay too.

Soft furnishings can easily be soiled by muddy paws, but cleaning wet spots immediately will help prevent stains becoming permanent.

For toilet mishaps, soak up as much liquid as possible and use a pet-friendly stain remover. It’s a good idea to choose a scent-free option, as strong smells can sometimes encourage marking. To keep these incidents to a minimum, place cats’ litter trays throughout the house and ensure they’re refreshed regularly. For dogs, make sure they have plenty of opportunity to go to the toilet outside.

Pet hair

Pets naturally shed hair, which can make it seem impossible to keep your home fur-free. Grooming should be a priority for any breed and is one of the best ways to speed up the shedding process and limit hair around the home – just introduce it gradually to get your pet used to it.

For pooches who enjoy lazing on the sofa, a heavy-duty throw will help prevent fur from transferring, and offer a layer of protection against curious claws which can easily damage soft fabrics. Remember to wash throws regularly to keep your home smelling its best.

Damage to lawns and gardens

Dogs’ urine contains high levels of nitrogen, which can over-fertilise and burn grass, resulting in discoloured spots. To avoid this, restrict access and train your pooch to do their business elsewhere, such as in a gravelled area.

If this isn’t possible (or practical), rinsing the spot with a watering can or hosepipe after they toilet will minimise the damage. Encouraging dogs to drink plenty of water will also dilute their urine as well as keep them hydrated. Pet water fountains are a great idea, as many cats and dogs prefer running water – you could also add water to their food.

Arwyn Davies told sponsors CSJ that it was a dream come true that he will finally get to represent his country with dad Bryn…after 10 years of competing against each other.

Bryn (57) and Arwyn (28), of Bryneglwys, have both qualified to represent Wales at the 2023 World Sheepdog Trials at the Gill Hall Estate in Dromore, County Down, on September 23, 2023.

Bryn started competing in trials career in the mid-1990s and Arwyn grew up with it.

They were just two of many hopefuls who headed to Newtown recently hoping to qualify from the Welsh trials and Arwyn topped it off beautifully with himself and his dog Cynfal Gwen finishing second overall.

Both Bryn and Arwyn feed their dogs on CSJ’s specialist dog foods and naturally CSJ’s owner and founder Ceri Rundle understands well how tough it is to compete with so many top winning handlers and dogs…since amongst her own numerous successes she was the first lady to qualify for the Welsh National Team in 1996, and also competed in the World Trials in Ireland in 2005.

As the new sponsor of the Guinea Pig Village at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park in Suffolk, award-winning small animal brand HayPigs! has designed and built a collection of guinea pig sized houses for the resident piggies.

The pint-sized builds include a café, nail bar, church, pub and convenience store, each lovingly designed and crafted to provide not only a visual treat for visitors, but also an exciting enrichment environment for the piggies.

“This really was a dream project for us,” said HayPigs! co-founder Rik Cridland, a professional product designer before he launched the company.

“It’s something we’ve always wanted to do and if we were going to do it, our mission was to make it the best guinea pig village in the world!”

The project comes on the back of series of collaborations with Jimmy’s Farm which has included installing a large Pig Top circus tent and selling HayPigs! enrichment toys and treats in the Farm Shop. It helps celebrate 20 years of family, food and fun at Jimmy’s Farm.

“We love working with Jimmy’s Farm, they have the same sense of fun and adventure that we do and really care about their animals. All their staff have been so helpful and it’s just an absolute pleasure working with them," added Rik.

The resident guinea pigs at Jimmy’s Farm were quick to celebrate their new village enjoying breakfast at the café, an afternoon’s pampering and pedicure at the nail bar and an evening of raucous wheeking at the pub! Wheek! Wheek!

Pet industry needs to 'level-up’ salaries of sales reps

Pet product suppliers are in danger of losing talented sales reps to other industries offering higher salaries and better benefits, according to a recruitment specialist...

Pet product suppliers are in danger of losing talented sales reps to other industries offering higher salaries and better benefits, according to a recruitment specialist.

Lynda Ward, owner of the award-winning Pet Trade Solutions, said: “Salaries for field sales roles in the pet industry have crept up over the past few years to a much more acceptable level, but they still have a way to go compared to similar roles in other industries.

“The pet trade is haemorrhaging experienced and respected people who simply cannot afford to say ‘No’ to better salaries offered in other sectors.”

Lynda added: “We also still have a huge disparity in wages for people carrying out the same roles. In general (depending on experience) a Territory Manager can expect to have a base salary of late £30ks to early £40ks plus a commission or bonus package…however some businesses still expect to attract good representation for less than £30k.

“Looking at ‘levelling-up’ from the same perspective as politicians – that is areas of the country – salaries in the pet industry have always been and generally remain much lower for territories outside London and the South-East. Is this fair?”
