Pet firms warned to beware of over-ambitious staff

Pet companies are being warned to guard against over-ambitious staff who try to run before they can walk. The warning comes from recruitment expert Lynda Ward (pictured), who urges firms to allow employees to fulfil those roles that suit their skills set.
Lynda Ward, founder of Pet Trade Solutions, says there is an increasing trend for people trying to run before they can walk.
“There is a noticeable inclination for people to expect to leap up the management ladder with only a small amount of experience in their current role - for example Account Managers seeking National Sales Manager roles with only two years’ experience in area sales.
“Whilst it’s great that people have aspirations and we always need people with ambition they really need to prove themselves before expecting to manage others.
"Equally, not everyone is cut out for man management and because someone is for example successful at selling they may not necessarily be good at leading a team of salespeople since that needs a different skills set.
"Take a look around at PATS and you will see many long-serving people in the pet industry who have remained in the role they first undertook. They are well looked after by their employers, happy in their jobs and respected in the trade…sometimes doing what you do best pays off."
Lynda is always happy to personally advise on any aspects of recruitment and marketing strategy and can be contacted on 07946 743784 or at lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com
