Aquatic shops face animal welfare nightmare as energy prices rocket

Trade body OATA is warning that aquatic shops and wholesalers could face a terrible choice to euthanise their livestock because rocketing energy bills are making their business unviable. OATA has today written to the Prime Minister to alert him to the crisis facing businesses within the home aquarium industry if nothing is done to support them through the energy crisis.

And it is asking aquatics businesses to add their voice by writing to their MPs to ask for help to highlight their plight.

Like many businesses, aquatics firms face huge energy bill hikes to keep their tanks heated and maintained but this is coupled with mounting concerns over how to manage the inevitable animal welfare issues if they are forced to close.

In addition, with increasing numbers of customers also closing down tanks, aquatic shops are facing more requests to rehome pet fish, because there is limited ability to rehome them elsewhere. Fish are the most populous pet, with industry estimates of 100 million fish to be found in homes and gardens across the UK.

“We have heard of businesses facing 300 to 400% price increases in their energy bills – just one example we’ve heard is a business’s monthly bills going from just under £4,000 to £15,000 while one wholesaler is facing an increase of a million pounds a year. These sorts of cost increases are unsustainable for any company but when you look after live animals you can’t just switch off and turn your back on your business. That means many businesses will face a critical dilemma about what to do with the livestock they hold, raising a very serious risk of mass euthanasia,” said OATA’s Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee.

“This issue is becoming extremely serious and we believe the aquatics industry is the hardest hit of all in the pet sector because of its energy requirements. We are asking the Prime Minister to take urgent and meaningful action soon. Without it there is no doubt we will witness many aquarium businesses closing their doors for good, leaving employees without work during a time of crisis, and millions of pet fish at risk of euthanasia because there is not the ability to rehome them like other pets.”

Record number of new products at PATS Telford

Seeing the latest pet product launches under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this September’s show at the Telford International Centre is set to unveil a record number of new items...

Seeing the latest pet product launches under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this September’s show at the Telford International Centre is set to unveil a record number of new items.

An impressive line-up of more than 300 entries to the popular New Product Showcase is a positive sign that PATS Telford exhibitors are excited about their latest products and can’t wait to show them to visiting retailers and buyers.

Products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers on the first day of the show (Sunday, September 25) to decide the winners of the New Product Awards.

There are eight categories in the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, and past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.

Henry Bell won the Best Bird Products Award at PATS Telford in 2021, and sales manager Alkan Gittins said: “We were delighted that the Henry Bell Sterling 3in1 Squirrel Proof Feeder was recognised at the awards last year. It takes time and planning to develop innovative new products and to have those efforts acknowledged is really motivating for us. The award has undoubtedly raised awareness of not only this but other products in the Henry Bell Bird Care range and has certainly had an impact on sales.”

Other winners at PATS Telford last year agreed that an award can have a great impact on a product’s launch.

Chris Broadbent, of Naturaw, was thrilled to have won the Best Dog Treats Products Award on the company’s first appearance at PATS Telford in 2021. “It helped us to get through the door with new suppliers and boosted direct customer sales. Our range of products has also expanded on the back of the win.”

And Chris Brierley, of Cotswold Raw, commented: “It was a real seal of approval for our new range Butcher's Block to win the Best Dog Food Products Award. It certainly grew sales yes, and awareness too.”

Adam Marsden, head of sales and marketing at Ancol, said: “We were delighted to win the Best Dog Accessories and Toys category with our Jawables Bad Boys at PATS Telford 2021. It gave us a great talking point at the show, and we merchandised the trophy next to the product on the stand. Sales have been really strong on this particular product and we know the award helped drive this – actually we sold out earlier this year before our stock was replenished.”

The Showcase is designed to help visitors to find easily the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.

The New Product Showcase entries will be displayed under the following eight award categories:

  • Cat Food and Products
  • Dog Food Products
  • Dog Treat Products
  • Dog Accessories and Toys
  • Dog Harnesses, Leads and Dog Wear
  • Small Animal and Bird Products
  • Pet Care Products
  • Grooming Products

With so many new products on show and more than 210 exhibitors attending PATS Telford this year, the exhibition is set to draw an equally impressive amount of visitors.

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.

PATS Telford takes place at Telford International Centre on Sunday, September 25, and Monday, September 26.

What it means to win a New Product Award at PATS

Winning a New Product Award at the UK’s National Pet Industry Event can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. It can help turn a new launch into a bestselling item in pet stores around the country and clinch that all-important export deal...

Winning a New Product Award at the UK’s National Pet Industry Event can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. It can help turn a new launch into a bestselling item in pet stores around the country and clinch that all-important export deal.

But don’t take our word for it. Here entrepreneur Tracey Voss, MD of pioneering pet product manufacturer Tailor-Grace reveals what the accolade has done for her business.

“I was absolutely thrilled to pick up the New Product Award in the Cat Food and Products category for our eco-friendly compact cat litter Huskaloo at PATS Telford 2021. It was wonderful to put that feather in our cap,” said Tracey.

“To receive that award was icing on the cake for the Huskaloo team. It also proved to be a springboard to our future success, both in the UK and abroad.

“We have been able to use the award to promote the product and that has created interest. We’ve been described in various publications as ‘award-winning’, enhancing our promotion.

“News of the award spread quickly and prompted a key distributor in America to contact us about doing business in the States.”

So why is the New Product Showcase such an important feature of PATS Telford?

“It’s important to enter, not just to win but to be seen,” added Tracey. “The new products at PATS are always displayed in a dedicated showcase area and I know that, when they arrive, buyers go straight there because that section shows them what is new.

“They can then take notes to visit this stand and that. It is a wonderful award to win but it’s also very important that you enter, not just to win it but also to be seen and showcased.

“The New Product Award offers a wonderful opportunity for exhibitors like me to be seen. The bonus from the award is because it offers showcase potential.

“For buyers, it’s a fantastic platform see everything that’s new, then target those products and plan their day according to what they’d like to see and who they want to visit.”

Vets branch opens its doors at leading garden centre

Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, has welcomed the national pet care provider, Carrick Vets, to its Chesterfield store...

Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, has welcomed the national pet care provider, Carrick Vets, to its Chesterfield store.

The state-of-the-art veterinary practice, which boasts a large operating theatre and the latest digital x-ray facilities, has relocated from its previous site in Clowne. It has now opened its doors adjacent to Dobbies in Barlborough Links, Chesterfield.

The new practice will offer current and future pet owners a quality range of services and facilities in a modern environment, while maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The service provided by Carrick Vets complements Dobbies’ existing dog-friendly approach and its range of pet products, as well as its dog-friendly restaurant.

Graeme Jenkins, Dobbies CEO, said: “At Dobbies, we are committed to working with companies that share our values. Carrick Vets’ offering complements our existing dog-friendly approach and wide range of pet products.

“As well as benefiting from Carrick Vets’ and Dobbies’ offerings at Chesterfield, customers will also be able to take advantage of The Muddy Paw dog groomers who are on site, making Chesterfield the ideal destination for local pet owners.”

Jessica Podmore, Clinical Director at Carrick, said: “The new site adjacent to Dobbies has all the space we need to help grow our practice, while still remaining in a central location for our clients. We now have an additional consulting room, separate dog and cat waiting areas, and hospital wards to keep stress to a minimum for our patients. We look forward to welcoming clients to our new practice.”

TV vet warns against feeding ‘dangerous’ treats

Dog-owning Brits are treating their dogs to potentially life-threatening and dangerous chews, a new survey has revealed. Rory Cowlam, known as Rory the Vet on CBBC’s The Pets Factor, said “As these shocking results show a large proportion of people are still feeding dangerous treats to their dogs..."

Dog-owning Brits are treating their dogs to potentially life-threatening and dangerous chews, a new survey has revealed.

Rory Cowlam, who is a British veterinary surgeon and known as Rory the Vet on CBBC’s The Pets Factor, commented: “As a dog owner as well as a vet, I know how important it is to treat your pet to build that amazing bond, but as these shocking results show a large proportion of people are still feeding dangerous treats to their dogs!

“Dog owners need to stop feeding cooked bones – particularly chicken as these will often splinter and become very sharp leading to a risk of gut perforation and very serious issues. I generally avoid raw hide too – it’s really tricky to digest and can cause both gut and tooth issues.”

The survey was carried out by Pooch Snax, a natural pig ear shaped dog chew brand.

Pooch Snax has launched a new natural and safe dog treat – Porky Ears – that brings something a bit different to the dog treat market. Shaped like ears and produced from 100% British pork, Porky Ears are a natural, healthy and easily digestible treat for dogs to enjoy. Full of protein, they also act as a toothbrush.

A spokesperson for Pooch Snax said: “Treats, as part of an overall nutritious diet, are a great way to bond with your dog. They can help to keep teeth and gums healthy and provide a way to express normal chewing behaviour. However, it’s important that we give our dogs the right kind of treats to avoid unnecessary chewcastrophes.”

Rory continued: “Having been in clinic practice for seven years, I’ve regularly witnessed issues from dogs eating clothes, sofas, balls and all other sorts of things from around the house! Everyday items can be toxic to dogs so it’s incredibly important to be careful when leaving your dog around potential harmful items.

“Speaking as a dog owner and vet, I find it incredibly hard to find a long lasting, healthy, easily digestible chew for Nala and my clients. Porky Ears are a great option because they are made from natural ingredients and high meat content, which means they are healthy, and they are easily digestible because they have no cartilage or ligament ingredients.”

Pooch Snax will be showcasing Porky Ears at PATS Telford on 25-26 September, on stand K11.

Champion Petfoods expands award-winning range

Champion Petfoods has strengthened its range of ORIJEN cat foods in the UK market with Guardian 8 and Kitten.

Made in Champion’s award-winning kitchens, the high-quality food supports the health and development of a cat – from its infancy as a kitten and over the span of their lives.

The first five ingredients of both ORIJEN Guardian 8 and Kitten, like the rest of the ORIJEN line-up, are always fresh or raw. This emphasises the brand’s ethos of a biologically appropriate diet that cats have evolved to eat, leaving pet lovers safe in the knowledge that they are giving their cat the best quality foods to nourish and grow.

ORIJEN Kitten

Specifically formulated for kittens, ORIJEN Kitten provides the nutrients essential for healthy growth. Packed with 90%* quality animal ingredients including chicken, salmon and turkey, this diet ensures muscle development is maintained throughout a kitten’s early years.

Brain development and cognitive function is also supported in kittens thanks to the careful combination of WholePrey ingredients; from muscle meat, organs and bones to the most nutritious and tender parts of the prey, along with the naturally occurring DHA and EPA from salmon, mackerel, herring and pollock oil.

Aiding digestion for young kittens is another benefit that comes from feeding on ORIJEN Kitten. Not only is it the specially designed smaller kibble size that supports the digestive system but also the infusion of natural prebiotics, such as dried chicory root and fibre from a variety of fruits and vegetables.

ORIJEN Guardian 8

Designed specifically for adult cats, ORIJEN Guardian 8 delivers eight valuable health benefits. The EPA and DHA from the wild caught fish and prebiotics from dried chicory root support immune and digestive systems, while the Omega 3 rich oils from wild caught pollock help maintain a healthy coat and skin, as well as joint health. Helping to maintain muscle, eye and heart health, and aiding brain function are also pros of ORIJEN Guardian 8 and its nutritious ingredients.

The first five ingredients are fresh or raw quality animal ingredients, such as fresh chicken, raw salmon, raw turkey, raw whole herring and mackerel. This abundance of WholePrey animal ingredients means less supplementation is needed.

Colin Rodger from Bern Petfoods, ORIJEN’s Distributor in the UK says: “We’re thrilled to see Guardian 8 and Kitten on the shelves of our stockists all over the UK, bolstering the range of ORIJEN cat food products. Having specialised, quality cat foods for both kittens and adult cats allows us, as well as adoring pet lovers, to protect and encourage each life stage of a cat. We look forward to continuing to bring the best quality foods made by Champion Petfoods enabling them to grow healthy and strong.”

ORIJEN Guardian 8 is available in two sizes and SRP starts at £7.99 for 340g.

ORIJEN Kitten is available in two sizes and SRP starts at £6.99 for 340g.

Pedigree partnership to extend Karnlea reach

Karnlea Bone Broth has joined forces with Pedigree Wholesale to further extend opportunities for independent pet retailers to stock its products...

Karnlea Bone Broth has joined forces with Pedigree Wholesale to further extend opportunities for independent pet retailers to stock its products.

The partnership will boost value and efficiency to retailers who may want to ‘dip a toe into the water’ and add quantities to existing orders – saving on shipping costs and enabling bespoke orders for dispatch to individual stores.

The move reflects the keen interest in Karnlea Bone Broth since its launch earlier this year. The Belfast company was actively approached by Pedigree Wholesale – one of the UK’s top wholesalers within the independent pet retail sector - to distribute its products in the UK.

Retailers will now be able to order through Pedigree Wholesale or continue to order direct from Karnlea.

Karnlea’s founder Lara McCulloch said the partnership was a “massive opportunity” to extend awareness and accessibility of its products.

“Pedigree Wholesale is a well-established and trusted partner which is celebrating 50 years in the business. It manages more than 2,500 accounts and has proactive sales team which updates customers on new products and recommends ways to help independent retailers grow and flourish,” she said.

Pedigree Wholesale has numerous distribution centres across the UK for fast and efficient distribution. It also promotes new products through its four-weekly magazine ‘Pet People’ and allows customers to order 24/7 through its website www.petproducts.co.uk.

“We believe that these channels will help keep customers up-to-date with our new flavours and promotional offers and support us with seasonal requirements and event opportunities,” added Lara.

The relationship extends advocacy of Karnlea Bone Broth, conveying its benefits in supporting gut, skin, coat and joint health in cats and dogs, and its use as a supplement, topper and treat.

Karnlea will also feature on Pedigree Wholesale’s stand at PATS Telford later this month.

Amanda Clark, food buyer at Pedigree Wholesale, said: “We are very excited to become Karnlea’s UK wholesale partner. Packed from fresh and with high levels of protein, collagen and minerals, we consider it an ideal product for supporting cat and dog health.

“We have doubled our stock levels to support its popularity in its first month with us. It is proving extremely popular, especially with retailers which put raw and natural products at the heart of their offer to customers.”

The Irish manufacturer of healthy snacks for dogs experienced elevated levels of interest in their products, which has led to tangible results in the last two months. This sets up an exciting end to 2022 and a promising 2023 pipeline.

Happy Belly Promise

Park Life’s reason for existing has been born out of genuine care for dog wellbeing, after finding that some mainstream dog snacks contain unhealthy or potentially harmful ingredients. With Fris-Bix, users can have a unique experience with their fury friends enabling throwing, catching, and guaranteed playful snacking.

The new product award was the cherry on top of a buoyant show, where Park Life generated interest and quality leads. In fact, as a result of Glee shoppers can expect to see the brand in hundreds of new retail outlets in the coming months.

Waiting lists for cats soar as cost-of-living crisis takes hold

The UK’s leading cat welfare charity has issued an urgent plea for people to adopt felines after its waiting lists soared to a historic high...

The UK’s leading cat welfare charity has issued an urgent plea for people to adopt felines after its waiting lists soared to a historic high.

Cats Protection says the number of cats waiting to enter its 34 Adoption Centres rose by 46% in July 2022 compared to July 2021 (2,582 cats versus 1,766 cats), with the charity’s volunteer-run branches reporting similar increases, as cash-strapped owners relinquish their pets due to the cost-of-living crisis.

Interest in rehoming cats is also on the wane – with each cat or kitten spending four days longer in the charity’s care compared to last summer.

Peter Shergold, Head of Field Operations for Cats Protection, said: “This is the worst situation in organizational memory in terms of the pressure on our services to take in cats. A 46 per cent increase in demand on our waiting lists is well above our historical average and looks likely to continue for the near future.”

“The rise is directly linked to the cost-of-living crisis, such as not having the funds to afford the basics like cat food or cat litter or a much more serious consequence such as a loss of a job or having to move into rented accommodation where pets aren’t allowed.”

Advance findings from Cats Protection’s CATS Report, due for release this autumn*, shows that 30% of cat owners are worried that they will not be able to pay bills or living costs owing to price increases. Meanwhile, 19% of non-cat owners say they would like to adopt a cat but can’t for financial reasons.

Cats that were reluctantly given up to the charity by cash strapped owners include a pair of six-year-old cats, Tinkerbell and Wendy who were brought to Cats Protection’s Warrington Adoption Centre during July.

Both were well-cared for by their previous owner but a change in the owner’s financial situation meant he had to make the heartbreaking decision to give them up. The charity is hoping to find them a home together in a quiet household, or a home with older children.

Cats Protection is urging people to visit its website which contains practical advice on how to hold onto your pet, such as obtaining access to cat food banks or exploring practical ways to reduce vet bills. The charity can also assist owners on limited incomes with the cost of neutering their pet cat.

Bira reveals independents plan price increase and reduction in staff ahead of energy price hike

The British Independent Retailers Association has revealed that almost 88% of its members feel they are being forced into raising their prices to shoppers once the energy price jump comes into effect this autumn...

The British Independent Retailers Association has revealed that almost 88% of its members feel they are being forced into raising their prices to shoppers once the energy price jump comes into effect this autumn.

In a recent survey which was completed by members before today's Ofgem announcement in which energy prices are jumping to 80%, it's revealed that business owners are preparing for the worst.

Among those questioned, 65% also said they would be forced to reduce the number of staff they had or reduce wages, while 40% were considering limiting opening hours, and almost 23% would be looking to permanently or temporarily close the business.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira’s CEO said: “Businesses are under great pressure at the moment and with some concerned that they need to reduce hours or even close permanently is incredibly worrying for us and the local economy.

“There has been no specific help coming through from central or local authorities to help businesses who are struggling with their bills which has been very disappointing. While some areas may have hardship funds or slight reductions in business rates, this is not seen across the country. It is clear to us that businesses are being targeted by energy providers to make up for any restricted price caps on consumers,” he said.

Mr Goodacre added that while business rate relief would be welcome, small businesses would still be paying 100% more this year compared to last year.

“We asked the government not to do this because as long ago as last October as we were seeing huge increases in retailer energy bills. More recently it has been 500% and keeping rates lower would have helped indie retailers absorb the higher energy costs. They will certainly need help as the rates for electric are increasing daily and we have just been told that one provider is charging 94p per KWH for electric – the highest we have seen so far,” he said.

Bira has written an open letter to the two leadership candidates, Rishi Sunak and Lizz Truss, urging them to take action, and in particular:

  • Maintain 100% business rates relief for retailers;
  • Persuade energy companies to place a cap on energy increases for businesses;
  • Reduce to the multiplier for small businesses from 2023/24;
  • Cut VAT for retailers to stimulate demand;
  • Provide more funding to encourage investment in low energy technology in retail shops to protect retailers from higher energy bills in the long-term.

Mr Goodacre urged independents to also contact their local MPs to detail their own experiences.

The association works with over 3,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK.

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s leading equestrian trade exhibition, which opens its doors in 10 days time.

BETA International, sponsored by Neue Schule, takes place on Sunday 11th September to Tuesday 13thSeptember, with leading companies eager to showcase their new products and services.

Bookings for the showpiece at NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, have been impressive as major brands show their commitment to the event.

Elico Equestrian, who missed BETA International in 2021, is excited to be returning to the UK’s leading equestrian exhibition at the NAEC Stoneleigh.

Director Keith Ellis said: “BETA International is going to be an excellent opportunity to meet up with everyone face to face once again, a chance to showcase all the new products which we have added to our portfolio since the exhibition in 2020.”

One business that will be exhibiting for the first time at BETA International is Leon (Ultralight) Boots, whose Kevin Burgess said: “This exhibition is an excellent event as our Wellington boot offering is perfect for the equine, pet and country markets. We’re excited to showcase to BETA International visitors what we have to offer and how we can provide a more affordable alternative to what is currently available on the market.”

BETA International will be packed with top features, including the Shires Equestrian-sponsored New Product Showcase, which is designed to help visiting retailers and buyers find the latest products to hit the industry. Visitors will be able to view the products under eight categories: Clothing & Footwear, Feed & Supplements, General, Horsecare, Horsewear & Equipment, Pet Products, Saddlery & Tack, Safety.

Products will be judged by a panel of industry experts to determine the winners of the New Product Awards, sponsored by Equestrian Trade News.

Another popular feature of BETA International is the expert seminar programme, as the talks from leading figures in the equestrian industry offer a great opportunity to discover some useful trade secrets.

With the event reverting back to its popular show days of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, after being held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in 2021, BETA International is sure to be buzzing with activity.

Lynda Mortlock, director of Ingatestone Saddlery Centre in Essex, summed up the importance of BETA International, saying: “It’s an essential part of our trading year. We always discover new ideas and learn about new products and trends. Every year we seem to find new suppliers to give our customers a constantly changing product range.”

And Serena Harriman, director of Millbry Hill Country Store in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, added: “I find attending BETA International every year invaluable for myself and my team. The chance to visit many of our suppliers in one place presents a great business opportunity. Scottish MP visits cats adoption centre

A Scottish MP has paid a visit to Cats Protection’s Forth Valley Adoption Centre to see first-hand how the charity helps cats both in the local area and across Scotland...

A Member of Parliament has paid a visit to Cats Protection’s Forth Valley Adoption Centre to see first-hand how the charity helps cats both in the local area and across Scotland.

John Nicolson, the SNP MP for Ochil and South Perthshire, met staff and volunteers at the centre before being given a behind-the-scenes tour where he met some of the cats currently looking for new homes.

Cats Protection speaks up for the 685,000 pet cats in Scotland and has a Scottish network of 24 volunteer-run branches, four adoption centres and nine charity shops. In 2021, the charity rehomed 2,500 cats in Scotland.

As the leading voice on cat welfare, Cats Protection is calling on the Scottish Government and politicians to introduce measures to help improve feline welfare, including the introduction of compulsory microchipping for owned cats.

John Nicolson said: “I was delighted to visit Cats Protection’s Forth Valley Adoption Centre and meet the fantastic team there. They do wonderful work - not just rehousing cats to safe and loving homes but also helping with microchipping and neutering of cats for folk who are struggling with their family budget at the moment.

“I was also interested to hear about how Cats Protection is working with local authorities across Scotland to scan beloved pets which have been killed on the roads by hit-and-run drivers. Sadly this is the fate of too many cats - victims of speeding and careless drivers.

“I was incredibly impressed with all that Cats Protection do.”

Cats Protection’s Advocacy & Government Relations Officer for Scotland Alice Palombo said: “We were so pleased to welcome John Nicolson to the centre to discuss the work we do to help cats, such as encouraging more landlords to allow tenants to have a pet cat. We also discussed our campaign for the compulsory microchipping of pet cats in Scotland, a measure that would help protect countless cats into the future. It’s great to see politicians taking a keen interest in cat welfare, which is an important issue for many people.”

New animal industry qualifications available to armed forces leavers

A leading animal grooming school is now offering an even wider range of courses to those leaving the armed forces...

A leading animal grooming school is now offering an even wider range of courses to those leaving the armed forces.

The Four Paws Groom School's courses in cat grooming, dog walking and pet sitting have recently been approved by the Ministry of Defence.

Those leaving the Army, Navy or RAF and are considering retraining in the animal sector can now choose from five different qualifications when considering their next steps.

They can opt for cat grooming, dog walking and pet sitting qualifications in addition to dog grooming and canine first aid - all of which are Ofqual-regulated.

Fern Gresty and Sarah Mackay, owners of Four Paws and awarding organisation iPET Network, said: "We're thrilled to be able to offer an even bigger range of qualifications to those looking for a new career after serving in the armed forces.

"Those leaving the armed forces can be provided with up to £2,000 towards the cost of training for a new career.

"We understand that the prospect of starting a new job can be very daunting so the qualifications we offer provide all the training and skills required to have work with animals, which we both know is incredibly rewarding.

"Every one of our qualifications is specifically tailored to that particular sector and is delivered in settings across the country by our highly-experienced training providers.

"Those who have experience of the armed forces have a whole host of transferable skills and are a real asset to the animal sector. We're looking forward to enrolling more of those capable and talented people on our courses in the coming months."

Former Army dog handler Jessy Brown is choosing to retrain as a dog groomer after being medically discharged.

The 22 year-old from Northern Ireland is studying for the iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management.

Jessy, who is taking the qualification at the Bone Idol Academy in Hove, said: "I'm getting medically discharged from the army because of an ongoing illness. It’s really sad, but positive at the same time because I think I am ready for something else and wanted to explore more career options.

"I've always worked with animals - before I was in the army I used to work at animal shelters. I've always been around dogs, and love going into work and being with dogs all day.

"That's why I've chosen grooming as my next career option, it's a natural transition, and I won't miss the canine company I've come to enjoy so much.

"A typical day of training looks like this: You get in, and you are shown which dog you have for the morning. Then you get all your prep done, changing into an apron and then get started with a groom.

"Helen, my tutor always talks you through, and helps you make a plan, and asks you questions about the coat type. Is it a haircut or a breed standard, or a wash and tidy? And then you crack on!

"We usually have until about midday to do the groom. It is really interesting and that is just the morning!

"Before I started the course in my head I thought it was going to be loads and loads of classroom work, and then a little bit of grooming here and there. But it has been so hands on and it’s amazing. You are literally grooming dogs all day every day! You do have theory lessons, but they really make it as interesting. It has been brilliant.

"I think it's really important to do the iPET Network qualification because this is a skilled job, and you are learning the proper way to do things.

"Important things like the proper ways to use your tools, and how to ensure a dog is always safe.  If you didn’t know those things, or didn’t know the industry standard way to do those things it could be dangerous.

"People who don’t do qualifications also wouldn’t know what we learn about the different coat types, and this can cause injury to the dogs.

"I think that the industry should be regulated, you need to have training to show that you can do the job, and for safety reasons. I was really shocked when I found out that dog grooming is an unregulated industry."

You can find out more about the qualifications the iPET Network offers - and how to enrol by visiting https://www.ipetnetwork.co.uk/guides/a-guide-to-becoming-a-dog-groomer/

Milo and Luna revealed as top puppy names

One of the world’s leading animal insurers – Agria Pet Insurance – has shared the 2022 puppy names and trends that have shot up (and down) the charts...

One of the world’s leading animal insurers – Agria Pet Insurance – has shared the 2022 puppy names and trends that have shot up (and down) the charts.

Over the last five years, puppy names in the UK’s top ten have largely stayed consistent with Willow, Bella and Daisy leading the charge for female pets, while Milo, Teddy, Bruno and Cooper stay at the top spots for male dogs.

For the first time, the name Luna has reached the number one spot, despite the name not making any appearance in the 2021 Top 10 list. Interestingly, the name Una, is placed at the bottom of the list this year, showing that one letter can make all the difference.

Fashion brands have historically been a female puppy name staple; however, this year hasn’t been as kind to the luxury favourites. Fendi is a great example, with 48 puppies given the moniker in 2021, but it fell short with just seven in 2022 – a staggering 85% drop. The same can be said for Chanel, with only eight puppies this year, 71% less than the previous year.

Shelley Harrison, Brand and Communications Manager at Agria Pet Insurance, said: “It’s interesting to see the shift in pet names each year and the factors that appear to influence the names we choose for our furry friends. As we often see with baby names, there will always be ‘classic’ big names that appear on the list, however, it’s nice to see some fresh names working their way up the charts in 2022.”

Top 10 male puppy names:

  1. Milo
  2. Teddy
  3. Bruno
  4. Cooper
  5. Max
  6. Reggie
  7. Bailey
  8. Bear
  9. Monty
  10. Loki

Top 10 female puppy names:

  1. Luna
  2. Willow
  3. Bella
  4. Daisy
  5. Poppy
  6. Ruby
  7. Lola
  8. Bonnie
  9. Rosie
  10. Molly

Independent pet firm strikes deal with retail giant

Pawsome Paws Boutique, an independent business creating original dog accessories, has released an exclusive collection with high-end department store chain John Lewis & Partners.

The brands met at a Product Guru event earlier this year, and instantly saw the opportunity to create a collaboration that would appeal to both customer bases.

The ‘Teal Leopard’ collection has launched online as well as in physical stores up and down the country, and consists of adjustable harnesses, collars, bow ties, leads, poo bag holders and PPB’s Tough Trails harness design.

John Lewis stores stocking the collaboration include High Wycombe, Oxford Street, Kingston, Cardiff, Cheadle, Peter Jones, and PPB’s hometown of Leeds.

PPB owner Sophie Chesman, who founded the business in 2016, said: “This is a dream come true. Working with such a prestigious brand like John Lewis has really validated all the hard work my team and I have put into the business over the years. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing support from our customers either, it’s a fantastic community we’ve created through our social media.”

Sophie started the business from her bedroom and has grown it to a team of seven with a headquarters in Leeds.

Sophie’s husband Jason, who joined PPB full time at the start of 2022, said: “Working with John Lewis is a testament to all the hard work Sophie has put into the business over the years. From converting the spare bedroom into a workshop, the late nights and early mornings, sometimes through the night sewing away on the machine to get the orders out of the door. I’m a very proud husband.”

Meet the woman behind dog fashion brand

Pawsome Paws Boutique saw sales explode during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, with ‘dog mums’ desperate to pamper their beloved pooches during lockdown...

Pawsome Paws Boutique saw sales explode during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, with ‘dog mums’ desperate to pamper their beloved pooches during lockdown.

Sophie Chesman, 30, set up the business while fitting it in alongside her job in car sales, before being able to go full time with the business after just four months.

"It was a bit of an accident, really," she said. "I started off hand-making a lot of dog-related products, stuff like personalised dog lead hooks. I made them as presents for family, then people would start asking me for them when I posted them on Facebook.

"It got to the point where it got really busy with the handmade products. I was sewing dog collars and bandanas and stuff like that, until the early hours of the morning. That's when I quit my job. Then about two years in, we went down the process of getting our products manufactured."

Sophie said that after the start of the pandemic, the business started getting around 20 times the number of orders. This led to husband Jason also giving up his job at an engineering firm to help out with the business, while the two rented out a warehouse in Leeds, and took on extra members of staff.

So what does Sophie think has been driving all the interest in their products?

"We have gone down the road of doing a lot of 'dog mum' stuff, like dog walking leggings to match the dog accessories, dog walking bags and phone cases, so all the dog mums can match their dogs.

"I feel a lot of people are obsessed with their dogs. I used to think it was women who haven't yet had children, but it is also women whose kids have left home who are obsessed with their dogs again.

"Since lockdown, so many people treat dogs as part of the family. When I was younger, your dog would have a bed and a collar, and sleep downstairs, but a lot of people treat their dogs like little humans now.

"Sales went through the roof during the pandemic, due to the fact that everyone was getting dogs, everyone was off work and the only thing we could actually do was walk our dogs. That is when it kicked off and got busier."

So what's the secret to the business's success?

"I think people like our harnesses because the only other thing on the market is really boring stuff that is really plain, whereas we do really fun patterns.

"Dogs have such big personalities, but they are often expected to wear these really boring accessories."

Sophie has two dogs herself: Reuben, seven, is a cavalier crossed with a poodle, while Betsy, six, is a cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle.

"They inspired me to set up the business," said Sophie. "I was forever spending so much money on them, spoiling them absolutely rotten, but at the time there wasn't that much you could really buy for them, so they inspired me to make all my own products.

"They come to work with us every day, and they are very badly behaved!"

Football legend opens new pet superstore in Dorset

Football legend Harry Redknapp and his wife Sandra officially opened the new Jollyes store in Poole’s Wessex Gate East Retail Park on Saturday...

Football legend Harry Redknapp officially opened the new Jollyes store in Poole’s Wessex Gate East Retail Park on Saturday.

Customers turned out in force as Harry and his wife Sandra cut the ribbon to mark the occasion. They were accompanied by their bulldog Barney.

Also at the opening was BCP Council chair Cllr Nigel Hedges, while the Rev Bryony Morrison of St James’ Church conducted a blessing for dogs and their owners who turned out to see the event.

Matt Godwin, regional manager for Jollyes, said: “It was amazing to see the pet parents of Poole turn out in force for the opening of our first store in Dorset – and a special thanks to Barney – and of course his mum and dad – for coming to open the store.”

Jollyes has announced more details of the ranges available at the new store, including dog and cat food, toys and accessories, food, treats and accessories for small pets, birds and fish. It will include Jollyes’ exclusive Lifestage dog food range, including dry food, trays and cans and its premium Lifestage Artisan dry food.

In the weeks after opening, the store will also host a Community Pet Clinic, offering regular health checks, vaccinations, flea and worming and microchipping.

As the first Jollyes store in Dorset, the Poole store will complement Jollyes outlets in neighbouring counties of Hampshire, Somerset, Devon and Wiltshire, including Bridgwater, Chippenham, Congresbury, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Waterlooville.

Jollyes prepares to open two more stores in Scotland

Jollyes has announced details of two new store openings in Scotland as part of a £950,000 investment this year taking it to five Scottish stores...

Jollyes has announced details of two new store openings in Scotland as part of a £950,000 investment this year taking it to five Scottish stores.

The latest Jollyes stores will open at Glenrothes, Fife, on Saturday 24 September and Edinburgh in the Autumn.

The two new stores follow the opening of Jollyes in Stirling in June and build on the popularity with local pet lovers of the long-standing stores at Clydebank and Perth.

Together, the three new openings take Jollyes’ total investment in Scotland this year to almost £1m, creating 34 new jobs and taking the total number of colleagues in Scotland to 55.

The 5,000 square feet Glenrothes store at Saltire Retail Park will employ 10 colleagues. Jollyes today announced that the team would be led by store manager Garry Bingham, 35, an experienced retailer who grew up in the town.

Garry (pictured right) is doting ‘dog parent’ to the newest addition to his family, Lilly, a 10-week golden Labrador.

At 7,500 square feet, the Edinburgh store, at Hermiston Gait Retail Park, will have 15 colleagues and will also feature Jollyes’ high quality dog grooming salon, The Spa.  The store manager at Hermiston Gait will be Angela Rennie who is moving from Stirling where she led the team behind this year’s successful opening. Angela is pet parent to dogs Blue and Mollie.

Both new stores will sell small animals, as well as a wide range of pet foods and accessories. As part of its opening plans, Jollyes has begun recruiting for colleagues at the new stores. Applications from those who want a dream job working with ainimals can be made at https://www.jollyes.co.uk/i/jobs-jollyes.

Kerry Midgley, Jollyes regional manager, said: “Scots love their pets and where we have a store, Jollyes has become the go-to destination for pet owners. We’re continuing to look at other locations and strongly believe Scotland will be an important area of growth for Jollyes in the future.”

“The investment we’re making at Glenrothes and Edinburgh builds on the success of our existing stores and with five stores across Scotland we are now starting to create a significant footprint and becoming a name that will become increasingly familiar.”
