- Europe’s leading expert in raw reveals new brand at PATS Telford 2017
- First pet food brand in the UK to invest in innovative freeze-dried technology following £2.8million investment
- Complete & balanced gluten and grain-free range will include freeze-dried Raw Boost, High Meat fillets and Raw Bites
Natures Menu, the UK’s number one and Europe’s leading expert in raw, has today announced the launch of a new brand, True Instinct.
This latest addition to the Natures Menu portfolio, which will be available to pre-order by specialist retailers at PATS from today, will see the company venture into the dry nutrition category for the first time, following a £2.8million investment in freeze-dried technology. Its aim is to raise the bar in the category, offering a premium product which is unique and innovative above all other products in the market.
True Instinct specialises in a complete and balanced range of grain and gluten free, natural raw and raw-inspired products. Its brand new range will offer highly nutritional, complete & balanced frozen raw, innovative freeze-dried raw and high meat fillets for both cats and dogs. True Instinct will offer every meal across the formats in a variety of premium quality deboned meats, with vegetables, high quality botanicals and superfoods and no artificial colours flavours or preservatives. The range will be available for Adult Dog, Small Adult Breeds, Puppy and Adult Cat across a number of variants.
Raw Boost is a particularly exciting development and a first for the UK pet market. Combining Natures Menu’s expertise in raw with the convenience of dry, the brand-new concept Raw Boost is the result of a partnership with dry food experts Affinity Petcare. Combining a high meat bite with a freeze dried raw meat nugget the product offers the benefits of raw meat ingredients surrounded by a wholesome blend of meat, fresh vegetables and botanicals.
Next in the range, True Instinct High Meat Fillets is the brand’s wet food offering, made up of premium steam-cooked shredded meat and fish fillets. The Adult Dog and Adult Small Breed Dog varieties contain 80 per cent deboned human grade meat, with the Adult Cat variety containing 90 per cent deboned human grade meat and fish.
Finally, True Instinct Raw Bites falls under the frozen raw category, bringing Natures Menu’s raw expertise to the forefront. As with all products in the range, each variety of Raw Bites contains at least 80 per cent deboned meat with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and includes a wide range of superfood ingredients. The product will be available in Adult Dog, Adult Small Breed Dog, Puppy and Adult Cat varieties.
Craig Taylor, Managing Director of Natures Menu, said: “The launch of True Instinct comes after a £2.8millon investment and more than two years of research and product development, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. We recognised the dry nutrition category was an area to break into and set new standards using our raw expertise, and we are now the first pet food company in the UK to invest in a freeze-dried range.
“Raw feeding has shown to have numerous health benefits for pets but we understand the convenience aspect of dry food can be more appealing for certain pet owners. With True Instinct and Raw Boost in particular, we’ve created the ultimate high-meat protein product with the power and taste of raw in every bite and we truly believe it will revolutionise the way people feed their pets and drive incremental growth in both the raw and dry categories.”
The True Instinct range will be available to purchase at specialist pet stores and online at www.naturesmenu.co.uk/trueinstinct
Peter Roy, Business Development Director at Natures Menu, added: “Over the last five years PATS has been an excellent show for business to business trade for Natures Menu, placing over 100 freezers with retailers at each show. When deciding when to launch our new brand to the UK market it was a natural decision to launch at PATS due to the exposure and the quality of the footfall we experience. With all the exciting new product and brand development we can showcase, we’re sure this year’s PATS will be better than ever for us and we can’t wait for the attending Pet Specialist stores to hear about what the future holds for us here at Natures Menu.”
With over 35 years’ experience in feeding raw, and endorsement from a team of professional vets, Natures Menu are proud to be pioneers and innovators of Europe’s natural, raw and raw inspired pet food category. True Instinct® pet food ranges have been designed and formulated, using high quality natural ingredients, boasting the highest nutritional value to deliver a superior, responsibly sourced, wholesome, complete and balanced diet for pets.

Burgess Pet Care has launched a new national online census, The Great British Rabbit Census, which was unveiled on International Rabbit Day (Saturday).
The family-owned brand hopes the new survey will mobilise more rabbit owners in the UK than ever before, with questions focusing mainly around the five welfare needs of rabbits.
Burgess Pet Care demonstrates its commitment to the welfare of Britain’s bunnies through its annual delivery of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), which highlights important welfare issues and encourages responsible ownership year on year.
The Great Rabbit Census is running for the next eight weeks. Each entrant will receive a discount on products purchased from the Burgess website, as well as being in with the chance to win a Burgess Pet Care Rabbit Hamper and Runaround Connection Kit.
Alex Thorne of Burgess Pet Care, said: “We know from RAW every year that there are a lot of rabbit owners out there who are absolutely devoted to their pets – you can see that from Twitter alone!
"Unfortunately, rabbits remain one of the most misunderstood animals in the UK, with many rabbit owners failing to understand the correct nutritional needs of their rabbits.
“We’re looking to find out as much about rabbits and their owners in the UK as possible to address these key issues.”
The Great British Rabbit Census only takes a short time to complete but covers everything from the rabbit’s diet to behaviours to how their names were chosen.
Alex added: “This is the perfect day to launch the census, as rabbit owners all over the world will be joined in their celebration of these adorable family pets.
"We’re calling on rabbit owners all over the UK to help us throw the spotlight on Britain’s bunnies and understand them better than ever before.”

Retailers will soon be able to offer customers a new selection of all-natural cat food and treats after Town & Country Petfoods unveiled its HiLife ‘It’s only natural’ range.
The family-run company, based in Melton Mowbray, has drawn inspiration from the town’s heritage as a ‘rural food capital’ for the new dishes, which are available from wholesalers from August.
Comprising three product types, it includes Nutritionally Complete Wet Recipes, suitable for everyday feeding, and Luxury Wet Recipes, which are ideal for cats to eat occasionally through the week as part of a complementary diet. Also available are natural treats made from 100 per cent chicken or duck breast, freeze-dried for flavor and packaged in re-sealable bags.
The Nutritionally Complete pouch recipes come in a variety of sizes including 70g singles and 8 and 32 pouch multipacks. Recipes include chicken dinner, tuna flakes and oceanfish, all enriched with vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy diet.
From the Luxury Recipes, owners can choose dishes such as tuna loin with shrimp, chicken breast with duck and oceanfish with salmon, which are available in either multipacks of three 70g cans or five 50g pouches. These dishes complement a cat’s everyday diet, offering a more luxurious treat.
Each recipe contains all-natural ingredients and are free of artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. The entire It’s only natural range is 100% grain free, making it a great choice for cats susceptible for allergies.
Peter Parkinson, marketing director at Town & Country Petfoods, said: “The ‘It’s only natural’ range was unveiled at the recent Pedigree Wholesale Pet and Aquatic Show and received a great response from those in the pet trade, particularly retailers who told us it is exactly what their customers are asking for.
“Following extensive research into the market, we have developed products that appeal to owners who want to ensure their cat has a healthy diet. More than ever, they are looking for good quality, natural ingredients for their pets and want to steer clear of nasty additives and fillers, much like in their own diet.”
He added: “The packaging is designed for maximum shelf impact, while the smaller portion sizes are just the right amount for a healthy, happy cat.”
“The distinctive, warm designs appeal as much to consumers as they do to shop managers, who can easily brand block an area of the store,” he said.

Responding to growing consumer demand for pet products that promote bonding and well-being, Chuckit! is reinforcing its commitment to happy and healthy pets with the launch of a new stimulating and durable collection of Rope Tug toys – the Mountain Rope Tug, which was unveiled at PATS Telford.
Following the success of Chuckit!’s Rugged range for tougher breeds, the launch of the durable Nylon Mountain Rope Tug gives retailers even more ways to cater to the needs of this specific market, whilst also now being able to target smaller breeds with tough toy solutions too.
Boasting looped ends for easy grip, this addition is suitable for multi-dog play or tug games between dog and owner, making it the ideal choice for both socialised dogs, and those new to tugging who need a simple toy to help them learn the ropes. A versatile toy too, the Mountain Rope Tug boasts Chuckit!’s first softer rope exterior, meaning it can also be used indoors if rain happens to halt those mountain hikes.
Will Baggaley, Brand Manager for Chuckit!, comments: “Expanding our options for tougher breeds was important to us as we know durable toys for rougher play are not always readily available for consumers, especially in smaller sizes.
"Made from a robust and hard-wearing material the Mountain Rope Tug is a great addition to the Chuckit! range and puts both bonding and fun at the forefront of dog ownership.”
The Small (RRP £7.99) and Large (RRP £10.99) Mountain Rope Tug will be available for retailers to browse on stand E10 at Pats Telford 2017.

Since 2009 Beco Pets has been manufacturing eco-friendly pet products, from bowls made from recycled bamboo to soft toys made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. In 2014 George Bramble and Toby Massey, the owners and directors of this leading ethical brand, looked into the pet food industry. They decided to cultivate change and create a natural and ethical healthy dog food for the responsible owner.
After 18 months of extensive research, development and fine tuning of recipes it was time to launch their creation. Grain free, gluten free, 100% natural and packed with only ethically sourced fresh meat and fish. No meat meal, cereals or other cheap fillers so every ingredient is loaded with nutrients. Beco launched with their 2kg bags as the primary offering and now the food has a following, they are expanding the range to include 6kg and 12kg bags. George tells us ‘after the success of the 2kg we had requests from customers who wanted to buy in bigger quantities, at the moment owners with larger dog breeds tend to be put off by the smaller bags. We want to make sure dogs of all shapes and sizes can enjoy a healthy and nutritious Beco diet’. The natural food comes in three recipes with every recipe formulated for its nutritional benefits, digestibility and sustainability. - Free Roaming Wild Boar with Pumpkin and Broccoli
- Free Range Chicken with Carrot and Chicory
- MSC Certified Cod and Haddock with Kale and Chickpeas
We asked Toby why he chose wild boar as a protein source. He replied ‘by using wild boar, each 2kg bag produces 16kg – 23kg CO2 less than beef, lamb or other red meats. It is also a lean protein rich meat which is great for dogs.’ He went onto explain ‘we go through this decision process for every ingredient, ensuring our recipes are the best for dogs and best for the environment. Asking which ingredients support local agriculture? How many air miles do they have to travel? Are the suppliers and animals treated with respect? The list goes on’. George goes on to compliment ‘our brilliant in-house design team have worked tirelessly to design and develop new packaging to make sure it still holds the same high standards we demand for everything we do. The big challenge has been strengthening the bags while keeping the same natural feel our customers love.’ The 6kg and 12kg make their debut at PATS Telford. From here you will be able to order them in advance and they will be hitting the shop shelves in October. If you are in the area, you will be welcomed with open arms at stand C20. You will be able to purchase it directly from Beco Pets on their new website and through their network of independent specialist stores up and down the country.

Harringtons is set to launch a three-month £1.25m campaign led by the sponsorship of the fifth series of Channel 5’s huge hit documentary 'The Yorkshire Vet' and closely followed sponsorship of 'Ben Fogle’s: New Lives In The Wild', another Channel 5 hit series, both strongly aligned to the brand’s target audience. The campaign will see Harringtons on TV for three months in the lead up to Christmas, seeing a shift from burst activity to an ‘always on’ approach with the aim of increasing awareness and consideration. A mix of 20” and 10” adverts will be supporting the programmes through October and November along and capitalises on Sky’s AdSmart technology to target dog owning households further as Dan Reeves, Marketing Manager explains, “With only a quarter of UK households owning a dog and current targeting on TV remaining relatively broad we’re able to use AdSmart to reduce attrition of our budget”. Reeves comments further “We’ve seen a significant growth period, increasing our penetration rates by 30%1 following our re-launch last September, packaging re-design and regional ATL programme in spring. We now want to reach more people to let them know that Harringtons is the natural choice when considering a new pet food” Supported with a heavy-weight digital spend, the activity will then lead into a social media campaign to drive the brand’s core attributes. The relationship with Peter Wright – one of the vets who star in the series – ensures a perfect fit with Peter a regular visitor to the office and site at Dalton in North Yorkshire where he works on approval of Harringtons global exports with sales continue to grow in territories such as Germany, New Zealand and Singapore. PIF Forum to reveal results into rabbit nutrition study
The Pet Industry Federation (PIF) will announce the results of its year long research study into the differences between feeding muesli and nuggets to rabbits at the Pet Industry Forum on the Tuesday 28 November at Whittlebury Hall, Towcester, Northamptonshire...
The Pet Industry Federation (PIF) will announce the results of its year long research study into the differences between feeding muesli and nuggets to rabbits at the Pet Industry Forum on the Tuesday 28 November at Whittlebury Hall, Towcester, Northamptonshire.
The study set out to validate a previous study (Meredith et al., 2015; Prebble et al., 2014; Prebble et al., 2015) on the subject of diet presentation and its effects on weight, feed intake and dental health, which had a profound impact on the industry because of a general lack of research into pet rabbit nutrition.
PIF’s year long independent study has taken place at two separate colleges and set out to assess the impact of two diet presentations (muesli vs nuggets) on weight, body condition score and the dental health of pet rabbits.
The rabbits were not kept in laboratory conditions, but in outdoor pens to simulate how a rabbit may be kept in an outside home environment. The rabbits were allowed free access to hay and water and were provided with driftwood logs as a non-nutritional chew.
The dental health was assessed by a specialist veterinarian at the beginning, middle and at the end of the study. Dental assessments looked at malocclusion, elongation, slanting wear, ridging, fractures of incisors; direction, elongation, step/wave mouth, missing teeth and gingival health of cheek teeth, as well as facial indicators of dental health.
Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF said: “We are pleased to be looking further into rabbit nutrition and welfare. Many of our members sell rabbits as pets or sell rabbit food to pet owners, and it is important that we can convey the correct advice to them and their customers on how rabbits should be fed.
"Both muesli and nugget diets are readily available and the trade association has set out to bring clarity to this subject through academic research. Further research studies are being planned by PIF to aid knowledge into how we look after the welfare of our pets.”
Tickets for the Pet Industry Forum are available from www.petfederation.co.uk or by telephoning 01234 273933.

AmPet Products has launched the IMARC engraving machine at PATS Telford.
Over the past 30 years, this engraving machine has become a market leader in the USA and Europe and is seen regularly at Global Pet Expo, Interzoo and Zoomark International. Now it is time for it to enter the UK.
European distributor Torben Bøgwad said: “We receive many enquiries from the UK, but it is hard to service these people properly from Denmark so we are very excited to be working with AmPet.
"With their focus on American products we feel that this is a great fit for us. I am looking forward to meeting UK petshop owners at PATS next month with the AmPet team.”
The IMARC machine is very popular as it does not require any maintenance or servicing and they very rarely break down even when used for thousands of tags every month.
The machine is easy to use and staff do not need any training to make tags that are stylish and quick to print. It also has a small footprint so sits easily onto a table top or till area.
With a suggested retail price of £12.00 including VAT for a finished tag, if a retailer sells three tags per day over a six day week, they will recoup their investment in just six months. Finance will also be offered to assist in purchasing the machine.
With the growth in equestrian retailers expanding into the pet sector the IMARC machine can also make tags for horses including brass name tags for bridles.
If you would like to find out more about the IMARC Engraving Machine or any other products distributed by AmPet, visit stand D32 at PATS, website www.ampet.dog or telephone 0330 088 3547.
