Pets Choice acquires Spike's World group of brands

Pets Choice today announced the acquisition of the Spike’s World group of brands, including Spike’s, Wildthings and Feathers & Beaky. Chief Executive Tony Raeburn said: “We are very excited to add yet more great brands to the Pets Choice family and believe that the Spike’s World group is the perfect fit to increase our proposition to the pet industry.”

Throughout 2017 Pets Choice will be continuing to focus on strengthening its product positioning. This will be a two-tiered approach which will include product innovation as well as further acquisitions to add to its current portfolio of several pet food, treat and toy brands.

As part of these plans, Pets Choice is excited to announce the recent acquisition of the Spike’s World group of brands including; Spike’s, Wildthings and Feathers & Beaky.

Tony Raeburn, Chief Executive of Pets Choice, commented on the investment; “We are very excited to add yet more great brands to the Pets Choice family and believe that the Spike’s World group is the perfect fit to increase our proposition to the pet industry.”

The acquisition was recently finalised with Pets Choice undertaking responsibility of the brands as of Monday 19th June, including sales and invoicing.

Tony concludes; “Spike’s World takes Pets Choice into a new sector and it's a great move for us as a business. However, it will be very much business as usual for customers who currently purchase these brands and orders can be made with our sales team from June.”

Founder and owner of the Spike’s Group, Marian Horscroft, commented; “Pets Choice acquiring Spike’s World is a significant step for the brand, and I have complete trust that Tony and the Pets Choice team will continue to build upon the hard work that has gone into creating the brand and products.”

As from Monday 19th June, for all Spike’s Group orders, customers should call the Pets Choice Sales Office on 01254 54545.

Small independents fear new Pets at Home store on Guernsey threatens their future

A new Pets at Home superstore which opens on Guernsey next week threatens the future of much smaller retailers. That's the view of owners of independent pet shops on the island, who fear the impact of the UK chain store will cause “incredible economic hardship”.

A new Pets at Home superstore which opens on Guernsey next week threatens the future of much smaller retailers.

That's the view of owners of independent pet shops on the island, who fear the impact of the UK chain store will cause “incredible economic hardship”.But Pets at Home claim its new store was the result of “strong demand” from islanders. It has taken over 6,000 sq ft premises formerly occupied by Waitrose at Admiral Park.

More than 250 applications were received for the 14 jobs created at the store.

However, Trim Dog Pet Centre owner Jan Olliver questioned the impact it would have on local stores.

“I think on an island of this size we have enough competition already and I feel a bit aggrieved that the States have allowed a large English company to come over here, but wouldn’t let McDonalds or KFC,” she told the Guernsey Press.

“We are a smaller island than Jersey and have just as many pet centres as them already – I think it is slightly crazy to have another.

“We have really good pet shops on the island who give good advice and are helpful to customers.’

Meanwhile, Creature Comforts director Michelle Botes said the arrival of the new store would threaten the future of local pet shops in what was already a saturated market.

“We feel that it’s a shame to allow a large pet supermarket into the island when we already have a number of established local pet shops,” she told the newspaper.

“We are not against competition, but feel that we already have a good diversity within the local pet shops, with each of them concentrating on different areas of the market.

“Guernsey is a small island so we have no chance of extending our businesses over greater areas in order to survive, consequently by adding a very large chain to an already saturated market there will simply not be enough trade to go around, meaning the smaller companies are likely to suffer incredible economic hardship and may be forced to close.”

Natures Menu has been named as one of London Stock Exchange’s Top 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain.

The annual report identifies the fastest growing and most dynamic small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and the Norfolk-based company was the only raw pet food brand to feature.

Natures Menu specialises in raw dog and cat food made with quality meats and fish, blended vegetables, fruits and healthy carbohydrates, and uses British suppliers and ethical product sources wherever possible.

DEFRA-approved and developed with vets, the products range from raw meaty bones to natural treats, as well as cans and pouches which all aim to satisfy the nutritional needs of pets and provide them with a healthy diet that’s packed full of pure, natural goodness.

Managing director Craig Taylor said: “We are delighted that Natures Menu has been recognised as one of the most inspiring companies in Britain.

"For 35 years, we’ve been creating 100% real, wholesome food for pets that’s packed full of naturally nourishing ingredients.

"We started out in 1981 as a small family run business and we are now providing millions of packs of raw pet food every month to satisfied customers across Europe with a fleet of 70 refrigerated vans delivering daily to UK homes from Inverness to Truro.”

Natures Menu is the largest natural pet food brand in the UK and makes 15,000 deliveries every month, feeding over four million meals to pets across the world.

Natures Menu remains in charge of its entire supply chain providing ethically sourced natural ingredients with full traceability.

Craig (pictured above) continued: “We are at an exciting time in the business as we look to open a new factory this year to help meet the growing demand for quality, balanced raw pet food.

Northumbria Pets in Alnwick is celebrating 25 years of successful business today (June 1). Owned by Keith and Luann Nichols, the store employs three members of staff with more than 75 years’ combined experience in the pet trade.

Last Saturday the shop organised a range of offers based around the number 25 – for instance,  two draws to win a £25 in-store voucher and 25 Northumbria Pets goody bags.

Keith said: “We are proud to have been of service to the people of Alnwick and surrounding areas and thank all of our customers who have made this milestone possible.

“The business has been built on a professional approach and a reputation for service and advice and the ability to obtain special-order products for customers from a wide selection of suppliers.”

The shop operates its own loyalty scheme, a delivery and carry-to-car service, a fitting service for collars, coats and harnesses, and a try-before-you-buy policy.

Northumbria Pets started in a corner shop on Fenkle Street, before moving to its current, larger premises on Bondgate Within 13 years ago. To begin with, it occupied half of the shop with an upstairs showroom, but a few years later expanded into the other half.

Staff have seen many changes in trends over the years, especially in feeding. Currently, raw feeding, grain-free diets and natural treats are in vogue and the shop stocks a range of these items.

For more details, visit the Northumbria Pets page on Facebook or call the shop on 01665 603116.

A Coventry pet shop owner has been fined for trading without a licence.

Amanda Evans ran Godiva Reptiles and Exotics and magistrates were told she failed to apply for a new licence for 2017, despite continuing to trade as a pet shop.

The 39-year-old of The Barley Lea, Stoke Aldermoor, pleaded guilty by post and was fined £40, ordered to pay costs of £755 and a victim surcharge of £30.

A pet shop licence runs annually from January 1 to December 31, but Evans did not reapply for it to run the pet shop on Momus Boulevard in Wyken, Coventry.

The pet shop used to sell a variety of reptiles and exotic animals, but has since closed down.

Animal Welfare Officers from Coventry City Council carried out a successful test purchase leading to the prosecution.
Serious about stocking pet products – only PATS has all the brands

The biggest-ever PATS show being held at Telford International Centre on September 24-25 will be the only place this Autumn to see all the new pet products to be launched in the UK...

The biggest-ever PATS show being held at Telford International Centre on September 24-25 will be the only place this Autumn to see all the new pet products to be launched in the UK.

Britain’s No.1 pet trade exhibition is THE show where the whole of the industry gather under one roof with over 200 companies showcasing their products in one massive hall.

It’s the ideal event for pet retailers and garden centres to decide what products to stock over the next year with hundreds of items being exhibited, many of which are new launches.

“There will be so much to see and do over the two days of the show,” said organiser Annie Foord. “It’s great to see the pet industry come together for this major event, and visitors can be sure of meeting representatives from all the leading names as well as many new ones.

“And there will be an international flavour to the show with overseas companies, including our first ever exhibitor from Russia, choosing to book a stand and unveil their latest creations.”

Here are 10 reasons why pet retailers and garden centres should visit PATS Telford.

  1. More than 200 exhibitors. PATS Telford is the UK national pet trade exhibition, showcasing products and services from all the leading pet food and accessory firms.
  2. International exhibitors. Companies from America, Russia, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Finland will be joining their counterparts from the UK and Ireland to make PATS Telford a truly international show.
  3. Over 300 new products. Last year at Telford a record number of new products were exhibited in the New Product Showcase, and the signs point towards that figure being surpassed in September.
  4. Bestsellers of tomorrow. All the products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers on the first day of the show, and the winners of each category will be announced at lunchtime. Past New Product Award winners have gone on to become bestselling products.
  5. Great show deals. PATS Telford is the ideal place to take advantage of money-saving offers on orders placed at the show.
  6. Strong line-up of speakers. Experts will deliver two days of unrivalled seminars, designed to give pet retailers ahead-of-the-game ideas on new lines, new approaches and new profit potential.
  7. Top grooming demonstrations. The PATS Grooming Workshops will feature state-of-the-art grooming demonstrations from leading names in the industry.
  8. Everything under one roof. PATS is the only pet trade exhibition in the UK to provide visitors with the opportunity to see the latest launches in one massive arena. And it’s free to enter – just register at www.patshow.co.uk.
  9. Extensive catering facilities. Receive a free cup of tea or coffee, and plan your movements with the aid of a free catalogue. If you arrive before 10am you will also receive a free refreshment voucher, redeemable throughout the day (subject to availability).
  10. Getting there couldn’t be simpler. Telford International Centre is ideally situated, being only 15 minutes from the M6 motorway, and within easy access of Birmingham and Manchester airports. Parking is free of charge at the venue. Rail transport is also excellent with Telford Central Railway Station just a two-minute shuttle bus ride from the exhibition.

Pet food products are becoming ever more influenced by human food and drink trends, and at a much faster rate than seen previously.

Chances are if you were eating it last year, expect to be buying it for your furry friends in 2017. That's the view of Law Print & Packaging Management, one of the leading pet food packaging companies in the UK...

Law Print & Packaging Management works with brands such as Symply Pet Foods (Canagan, Piccolo), Vitalin, Lily's Kitchen, Harrington, Pooch and Mutt, and Wagg.

The company recently visited Zoomark in Bologna to see for itself the top trends.

Kate McCauley, Marketing Manager, said: "The show was fantastic opportunity to capture a glimpse of the current pet food packaging trends and NPD (New Product Development) emerging across the Europe."

Here, Law Print & Packaging Management reveals its findings from the Zoomark trip.

Healthy Pets, Happy Owners

In the new product showcase, there were notably more health focused products with emphasis on “holistic food” and “wellness” across packaging and brand marketing.

There was even a superfood favourite Quinoa based, gluten free product from Farmina that promoted digestion and weight management, proving that pet owners are increasingly health conscious consumers.

Veggie Dogs

Vegetarian and vegan foods were also common across the new product development zone, reflecting the rise in consumer demand for these products in FMCG.  Brands such a Lilys Kitchen showcased Veggie Feast recipes as well as Benevo, animal friendly animal foods located in the British Pavilion.

One brand that really caught our eye was Green PetFoods that really had all bases covered in terms of new food trends. Their range was focused on meat free options and even new ‘insect dog’ hypoallergenic dog food embracing new wave of insect proteins.

New products such as edible insects have grown in the human food market accounting for $772.9 million at a CAGR of 6.1% over the forecast period 2016 – 2024. Products such as insect dog maybe signals the start of Pet Foods brands translating emerging human foodie trends into sales in the pet sector.

Snacking still on the menu

As to be expected snacking products were well represented throughout the exhibition. The dog treats and chews market is showing robust growth with the value estimated at £434million in the UK alone.

Brands such as Whimzees had stands dedicated to snack based products, emphasising natural, dental benefits with Chew Toothbrushes.

Canagan Biscuit Bakes also featured on the Symply Pet Foods stand. Considering the continuous product innovation from the Symply team it’s no surprise the company recently celebrated winning the Queens Award for Enterprise 2017.

Pooch and Mutt and Applaws exhibited their new miniature sized treats and snack based products, proving that the growth in this sector will continue into 2017 and beyond.

Grain Free

Emphasis on “fresh”, “gourmet” and “grain free” are still ever popular amongst the biggest pet food brands and have become crucial elements of product marketing.

According to Pet Food Industry grain-free pet food now accounts for nearly 30% of pet food sales in the US and it seems Europe is following suit.

Zoomark 2017 has cemented the feeling that it’s an exciting and interesting time in the pet care industry. Our team returned to the UK full of inspiration. We met some fantastic people, existing customers and new prospects impressed with the diversity of our pet food packaging on display.

As a staunch rural producer, the Devon-based Dog Treat Company (DTC) has announced a dog-friendly alliance with fellow countryside fanatics Forest Holidays, who offer nine idyllic luxury cabin sites situated throughout our isle’s finest woodland settings.

Forest Holidays is an ambitious Forestry Commission-backed project (born 1973) tasked with reacquainting families and their dogs with the Great British countryside. From Deerpark in Cornwall to Strathyre in Scotland; Forest Holidays offers simple, ‘back-to-nature’ cabin luxury, in tandem with miles and miles of stunning woodland trails.

DTC and Forest Holidays both appreciate the simple truth that today’s dogs are integral members of so many families. So why leave your best friend at home when they could also be taking time to reconnect with the great outdoors?

DTC founder Joe Halliwell said: "To be part of Forest Holidays thoughtful doggie welcome pack offer (treat tins and large jars) is absolutely incredible, especially when you consider the perfect correlation that clearly exists between our two brands – luxury meets healthy living.

"Although we’re a brand with a strong ties to traditional pet food outlets (independent stores, online providers, garden centres and farm shops) we’re especially enthusiastic about aligning ourselves with a growing assortment of all-encompassing family outings (dog-friendly pubs, hotels and cafes) that celebrate the regular attendance of our four-legged companions."

With half the total cabins designated pet-friendly (with more being converted) and offering top-notch, dog-friendly accommodation, (up to 4 dogs per cabin) Forest Holidays offers dog lovers with the perfect countryside retreat where the whole family can relax and recharge its batteries.

Forest Holidays are pleased to offer Friends of DTC (Dog Treat Co) a 10% discount off cabin breaks booked by 31/10/17 (breaks to be taken by 31/12/17)/.

Owners given chance to have their pets star in video

Royal Canin has launched an interactive social video that allows pet owners to instantly personalise scenes with their dog or cat. The video is part of a new educational awareness initiative, which aims to help owners better understand their animals' needs...

For almost 50 years, Royal Canin has developed scientifically based pet health nutrition with the real needs of individual cats and dogs at the centre of its activities.

To demonstrate the extent that its world revolves around our pets, the company has launched an interactive social video that allows pet owners to instantly personalise scenes with their dog or cat.

The video is part of a new educational awareness initiative, which aims to help pet owners better understand their pet’s needs by better understanding what science has proven makes them uniquely different from each other as well as people.

The #FeedTheirNature customisable video http://feedtheirnature.royalcanin.com/en-gb takes pet owners on a quick, intimate trip through Royal Canin’s headquarters in Aimargues, southern France, and offers a unique look into its single most important mission: making tailor-made pet food that helps dogs and cats be the most magnificent animals they can be.

It takes only a few minutes for pet owners to upload a photo of their dog or cat along with the pet’s name. Once the video is accepted and rendered, pet owners will be able to catch a glimpse of their dog or cat in two select scenes.

“We understand how much people love their pets, but no matter how well we think we know them, dogs and cats can never really tell us what they need. Science and observation help fill this communication gap,” said Clare Hemmings, Scientific Communications Manager at Royal Canin.

“The video is an exciting way to personalise the relationship between pets and people in a different way – by emphasising the unique, individual nature and needs of dogs and cats.”

Consumers can create their personalized #FeedTheirNature video from 5th June to 16th July at http://feedtheirnature.royalcanin.com/en-gb.  Programme terms and conditions apply. Participating pet owners are encouraged to use the hashtag #FeedTheirNature to share the video with friends and family across their social channels.

The #FeedTheirNature video and “Feed Their Nature. Not Yours.” initiative is rolling out in markets around the world, including the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Skinner’s Pet Food sponsors Dog Arena at BBC Countryfile Live

Skinner’s Pet Foods will be sponsoring the Dog Arena for the second year at Countryfile Live in the picturesque grounds of Blenheim Palace from August 3-6.

Although the name Skinner’s has been synonymous with working dog food since their first ranges launched back in the early 1970s, this year the company will also be able to promote its new range, Life,.

Life is a premium pet food carefully formulated with the help of vets and other experts in canine nutrition, to create healthy recipes which are free from artificial, colours and flavourings. It is available in Puppy, Junior, Adult and Senior, with Sensitive available for those dogs needing a fully hypoallergenic option.

The range is perfectly balanced containing super premium ingredients – including optimum levels of all nutrients and essential vitamins and minerals – to form a highly palatable diet for all stages of a dog’s life.

The sponsorship of the BBC Countryfile Live’s Dog Arena continues to provide the perfect platform to promote the link between good nutrition and happy, healthy working dogs and pets alike.

William Delamore, Skinner’s Sales & Marketing Director, said: “Skinners is delighted to be sponsoring the Dog Arena at the 2nd Countryfile Live Show.

"We were incredibly proud to sponsor the Dog Arena at the first Countryfile Live show last year and are honoured to be given the opportunity once again. We thoroughly enjoyed last year’s show and the exposure it gave to the Skinner’s brand therefore we jumped at the chance of doing it all again.

"Last year we were fortunate enough to meet so many different people and their dogs - of all shapes, sizes and breeds -  but they all had two things in common; their love of their animals and the countryside and all it offers.

"It’s a great event for the whole family and I understand this year’s show is set to be even bigger and better than last year so we are all very excited!"

Tim Etchells, Managing Director, SME London Ltd (organisers of the show) added: "Last year’s inaugural BBC Countryfile Live exceeded all our expectations – and we intend to surpass even those, this year.

"To have such a major pet food producer as Skinner's Pet Foods on board as one of our main sponsors for the second year is a huge asset to the show."

Over 600 exhibitors will be at BBC Countryfile Live, and the event is expecting to attract over 120,000 visitors across the four days. Skinner’s can be found on Stand E21 and the company will also be taking part in a Q&A session in the Quilter Cheviot Theatre on the Saturday afternoon.

The Exo Terra Monsoon Solo and Multi are new programmable misting systems suitable for all types of terrariums and greenhouses.

Both have been designed to maintain optimal humidity by generating a fine mist at programmed intervals, the duration and frequency of which can be easily adjusted depending on the type of animal or plant housed.

Frequent misting helps stimulate breeding behaviour, and is a necessity when housing live tropical plants such as Bromeliads, orchids, mosses, etc.

The Monsoon systems can be programmed to mist multiple times per 24-hour cycle, with spray durations ranging from 2 seconds up to 2 minutes.

The reservoir ensures continuous operation for several days without the need for refilling and can be easily replenished without needing to uninstall the entire system.

The mist produced by these specially designed systems is extremely fine, creating a fog-like effect in the terrarium or greenhouse, and the extra long tubing makes it possible to conceal the unit in a storage area or under the terrarium in a cabinet.

Key Features

  • Programmable misting unit for terrariums and greenhouses
  • Easy to connect and install, tubing; fits through the closable wire/tube inlets (featured on all Exo Terra Terrariums).

Guide Dogs helped to calm the nerves of students

Around 350 students at Exeter University cuddled a guide dog between exams and managed to raise over £1,200 for Guide Dogs.

Many studies have shown that cuddling a pet helps relieve stress by lowering cortisol levels by up to 20%, so it’s a win-win for the students and for Guide Dogs.

Pauline Devlin, ROYAL CANIN director of corporate communications and scientific affairs, said: “It’s been such a great day – the students have enjoyed meeting young Guide Dogs, and as a company ROYAL CANIN has been proudly feeding generations of Guide Dogs.

"We hope that as well as enabling students to meet the dogs who make lives better for people that we will also encourage some of them to join us, either at MARS worldwide or at Guide Dogs themselves!”

Alec James, vice president, welfare and diversity for the Exeter Students’ Guild, commented: “It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome the Guide Dogs and their owners and also the team from MARS who have supported the event today at the Guild.

"The dogs have been incredible, so patient and friendly and have truly brought a smile to everyone who walked through the door.

"It has also been a great way to raise awareness of the amazing work the Guide Dogs do day to day and raise money for such a worthy cause.”

ROYAL CANIN has worked closely with Guide Dogs for many years, feeding dogs in training and during and after their working lives.

Yea-Sacc gives Roger a new lease of life
When David Anderson’s horse Roger lacked energy out hunting he couldn’t quite get to the root of the problem...
When David Anderson’s horse Roger lacked energy out hunting he couldn’t quite get to the root of the problem.

David has owned 10-year-old, Irish Sports Horse, Roger for four years and is an experienced horseman having ridden for over 40 years, starting as a child on the family farm near Darlington.

The pair regularly spent their winters hunting, often twice a week with the Zetland Hunt on the border between North Yorkshire and County Durham.

But over time David found that Roger was lethargic, often unwilling to jump, and regularly showed signs of mild colic.

This culminated in Roger suffering a severe case of colic, resulting in a week-long stay in the equine veterinary hospital. During an endoscope vets discovered a severe case of stomach ulcers.

Although Roger recovered, David was left with expensive veterinary bills and was keen to make changes to ensure Roger didn’t suffer another debilitating attack, which could be fatal.

On the advice of an Alltech nutritionist, David decided to try Roger on Yea-Sacc®. The nutritionist explained that the concentrate feed that David had been feeding Roger in an effort to meet the energy requirements needed for a day’s hunting was actually contributing to the problem.

The high acidic levels in the stomach were aggravating the ulcers causing Roger considerable discomfort.

Concentrate rations consisting of more than 3-4g (possibly less) of starch per kilogram of body weight per meal can lead to starch overload, where starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine will overflow into the hindgut, particularly the caecum which can affect the microbial balance.

This disruption of normal hindgut function can result in more acidic conditions.

David was delighted with the rapid change in Roger after introducing Yea-Sacc to his diet: “Roger was no longer lethargic; instead I had a much happier, forward going horse. We have enjoyed many memorable days out hunting, jumping hedges and fences that would never have been possible prior to being fed the Yea-Sacc,” he said David.

Yea-Sacc® is a live yeast culture based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast strain specifically selected for its influence on animal performance. One of the first and most highly researched ingredients formulated in equine feeds with a low inclusion rate and proven performance responses, Yea-Sacc® stimulates good bacteria in the hindgut and buffers acidity to maintain healthy digestion.

Kennelpak has been overwhelmed with the response from wholesalers, retailers and consumers alike to its new YAKERS dog chews, which were launched  at PATS Sandown in March.

Initially launched in two sizes – Medium and Extra Large – the demand has been such, that Kennelpak will now be introducing a small size, which will be available in early  June.

Made in the hills of the Himalayas using a mixture of Yak and Himalayan cow milk, these long-lasting, natural, gluten free, vegetarian chews are a hard cheese, that slowly softens as the dog chews on it.

Using traditional methods, the chews are slowly smoke dried over a 28-day period, to give them a unique flavour that dogs love.

For more information, please contact your wholesaler, or Kennelpak direct on 01159 399077, email sales@kennelpak.co.uk or visit the website www.yakers.co.uk

Peregrine Livefoods secures exclusive deal with Biopod
Biopod is a revolutionary complete micro-habitat set to launch globally on July 17. If you’re looking for the next big thing, you need to read this...

If you’ve been on social media recently, you may have seen a new product sending reptile and amphibian lovers into a frenzy. Biopod is a revolutionary complete micro-habitat set to launch globally on July 17. If you’re looking for the next big thing, you need to read this!

Company founder Jared Wolfe initially conceived Biopod to be a safe haven for endangered rainforest species, namely frogs. The goal was to re-create conditions found in the wild and assist in conservation projects to breed endangered species and release back into the wild.

After years of design and testing, Biopod launched a Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaign and raised over $1.2 million through over 1,200 backers. It’s since received huge exposure in North America and had further private equity investment to ensure Biopod is a worldwide success.

Biopod comes in five sizes and contains the latest technology to keep a wide range of pets in a perfectly controlled habitat with the use of a smartphone application.

The systems include air and ground heating, UVA & UVB lighting through LED and cold cathode fluorescent lighting. They contain misting systems and even a camera which can be viewed through the app anywhere around the world.

The Aqua and Aqua II models can be set up as a “paludarium” – part terrarium and part aquarium and these also contain an aeration unit. All features turn on or off throughout the day at set intervals pre-determined by the wild conditions for each species.

Biopod is a simple “plug and play” system. It can be taken out the box, plugged in and once connected to wi-fi, the application takes over and does all the work. Simply select the species from a broad list already populated by Biopod and the perfect conditions are re-created. What’s so special about this system, is that Biopod has worked with a team of biologists and conservationists who have taken readings of temperatures and humidity from hundreds of locations around the world.

Importantly, those readings aren’t just what the weather channel will give you, they’re taken directly in the spots where the animals live, for instance under tree cover in a dense rainforest near a running stream.

For those who want to take over, Biopod also has a manual mode, allowing the user to adjust settings to their own specific requirements.

Biopod will be available exclusively through Peregrine Livefoods.

Chris Jones, Sales & Marketing Director at Peregrine Livefoods, comments: “We are delighted to have secured this exclusive partnership with Biopod. Having tested these products for several months now, we can say with certainty there’s nothing like this on the market and believe this is truly game changing.

"Finally, we have a system that can control conditions safely and more accurately than any other system. It looks modern, it’s easy to set-up and makes keeping rare and beautiful species more accessible to the beginner.”

As the gap between pet food and human food trends continues to narrow, consumers are scrutinising the ingredients in the nutrition they feed their pets more than ever.

Owners are demanding pet nutrition with a high meat content and natural ingredients that are low in sugar, salt and fat, whilst ensuring their pets enjoy flavour and variety in their diet.

It is this insight that has underpinned IAMS latest campaign to highlight why IAMS is packed with high quality animal proteins to support healthy, active lives for pets.

The new IAMS Proactive Health campaign showcases the impressively high levels of protein in every bowl, whilst communicating that shoppers will get more protein for less, when comparing cost per meal.

Chicken and turkey protein is the number one ingredient in IAMS Proactive Health which offers pets 47% more animal proteins than the top two leading brands for cat and 24% more for dog.

The campaign, which will be activated through a multi-channel approach, highlights how owners can help their pets live a healthy active life with an animal protein rich, 100% complete and balanced diet. Protein is a critical nutrient and consistently needs replacing.

Plenty of high quality protein is needed every single day to support the skin and coat, muscles, digestion, tissues such as the liver and even important messengers such as hormones.

The retail launch will be supported with outdoor advertising, a dedicated micro-site, digital and social media advertising, an influencer WOM campaign, direct mail, in-store POS, PR, print advertising and displays, and couponing.

IAMS Senior Marketing Manager Celine Gustin says: “We know that for our target audience, pets are a hugely important part of the family and as such want to provide them with a tasty, high quality diet that will help keep them looking and feeling healthy, strong and happy.

"The IAMS Proactive Health range provides cats and dogs with the nutrients they need, including a tasty blend of chicken and turkey protein as our number one ingredient to naturally provide essential amino acids like taurine, omega fats and vitamins and minerals.

"Not only will pets really enjoy the taste, but owners can have the confidence that they are supporting a healthy, active life for their pet.”

South African accessories brand ROGZ launched a novel new product at Zoomark. Described as a 'treat puzzle', this slow feeder/treat dispenser is one with a marked difference.

Designed to both stimulate and entertain, the ROGZ 'Tumbler' is unique in that it offers a three setting, adjustable release rate, treat dispensing mechanism.

Extremely easy to use, the Tumbler (made from tough, food safe BPA free ABS plastic in 5 “ROGZalicious” colours – blue, red, orange, pink and lime), allows you to set the difficulty at which your pooch is able to reach his favourite kibble treat.

As the dog learns how to free his nibble, you can adjust it to become more challenging and slow down his feeding time.

In addition to being a slow-feeder and treat puzzle, the Tumbler also wiggles with unpredictability to stimulate any dog’s mind and muscle.

It is 100% dishwasher safe, and rates at an impressive 4/5 on the ROGZ Bite-O-Meter.

In a market where innovation, quality and price are often at odds, ROGZ may just have landed another winner.

Put feline welfare on election agenda, urges cat charity
Charity Cats Protection is calling for Britain’s next Parliament to legislate for air gun licensing in England and Wales as more than 200 pets suffered pellet wounds last year...
Charity Cats Protection is calling for Britain’s next Parliament to legislate for air gun licensing in England and Wales as more than 200 pets suffered pellet wounds last year.

The organisation is urging Westminster candidates to back a five-year welfare agenda to improve the lives of 11 million cats.

Some 21,404 cats entered the UK in 2015 under the Pet Travel Scheme and CP wants enhanced border checks recorded on a national database to aid traceability.

The UK’s largest feline welfare charity stated: “Politicians from all parties can improve their lives immeasurably by tackling some of the charity’s 2022 Agenda priorities.

“While cats might seem less important than mainstream issues they are part of society and part of many family lives with nearly a quarter of UK households owning a cat.”

Some 202 cats were reported as being shot with an air gun last year. Cats Protection is calling for air gun licensing to be introduced in England and Wales, as it is already in Northern Ireland and Scotland, to prevent injury to or death of cats shot by such weapons.

The charity is also calling for animal welfare education to be included in the National Curriculum to help children learn about responsible pet care.

Cats Protection has called on all candidates to ask them to pledge support for its 10-point agenda.
