Young entrepreneur, 20-year-old Callum Griffiths, is taking the pet food world by storm with his natural pet food brand Clydach and he wants more dog owners to discover his truly exceptional range.

Callum has always had a passion for animals and began breeding chicks from his parents’ cockerel and hen when he was just 13.

From that he moved to hatching hundreds of chickens as well as creating his own chicken food and now, his biggest venture... pet food for dogs stocked through high quality independents across the county.

The Clydach range of pet food marks itself as being of exceptional quality. A 100% grain free range and free from any artificial colour, flavours or preservatives, Clydach’s dog food is bursting with a high end range of natural meats, fish and poultry including:

  • Free range English Venison from deer raised on flora and fauna as they roam the rolling open countryside of protected estates and parks
  • Sustainable Scottish Salmon sourced from North West Scotland
  • Ethical Suffolk Duck from Red Tractor assured farms
  • Welsh Lamb, grass fed on the rich Welsh landscape of the Snowdonia National Park

The Clydach range is also brimming with naturally high levels of Omega 3 and 6 and is a great source of EPA and DHA – helping to support a dog’s healthy heart, supple joints, cognitive function, visual development and a wonderfully glossy coat.

Ethical responsibility is something that Clydach Farm Group takes very seriously. As a brand, Clydach is committed to supporting UK farming and agriculture by not only sourcing the best ingredients, but by building lasting, loving and personable relationships with farmers across the British Isles – which also means Clydach get the pick of their crop as well as ensuring they get a fair deal to sustain their own businesses too.

Clydach supports retailers with their ‘Retailer Happiness Team’ to ensure ultimate customer satisfaction. With a £150 minimum order and next day delivery as standard, there’s never been a better time to get in touch to open an account.

Raw-feeding campaign creates massive 'on-air' exposure

A month-long campaign called RAWgust, aimed at changing dogs’ diets across the UK, received massive exposure on the radio with over 20 stations highlighting the story in the first week alone...

Raw dog food manufacturer, Poppy’s Picnic, is changing dogs’ diets across the UK with its RAWgust campaign, a ‘change-for-life’ themed month for pets.

The Wiltshire-based firm has been calling on pet owners to improve their dogs’ wellbeing by feeding raw food throughout the month. The campaign provided an opportunity to educate those who are unfamiliar with the multiple benefits of feeding raw, and also encourage those who have always wanted to try it to see how easy it is to make a real and lasting difference to their dogs.

In the campaign’s opening week, Canine Nutritionist and Behaviour Expert, Anna Webb, and Poppy’s Picnic Founder, Dylan Watkins were interviewed by over 20 radio stations nationwide, including 14 BBC stations. Poppy’s Picnic also worked alongside The Victoria Derbyshire Show to develop a pet obesity feature which cited its new research highlighting the lack of association between fresh food for dogs and better weight management.

To mark the launch of RAWgust, which is in its second year, Poppy’s Picnic released brand new research* which showed that although 81% of the British public recognise fresh food as the best diet for humans to stay fit and healthy, only 51% think the same is true for dogs. With the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association’s 2019 Pet Obesity Report highlighting that 51% of dogs in the UK are obese, it is clear there is a need to stimulate awareness.

Dylan Watkins says, “With the majority of the nation feeding their pets highly processed foods, our research shows there is a dire need to educate Britons about the content and freshness of pet food, which often contains a lower meat content than the once notorious Turkey Twizzlers, which contained just 34%. Whilst for humans there is no shortage of campaigns attempting to turn the tide of obesity and its complications, we wanted to lead the charge in educating dog owners.”

Anna Webb explains why a biologically appropriate raw food diet, with no grains, fillers or artificial preservatives is best for dogs:

“Feeding a biologically appropriate diet nourishes dogs at a cellular level. Its bio-availability means you're feeding to optimise health and help prevent disease, whereas processed diets comprising 30%-60% grains are high-glycaemic, promoting allergic reactions via a pro-inflammatory response. Allergic reactions are a symptom showing that your dog's immune system is not functioning at 100%. Often an allergy is atopic (on the skin), making dogs very itchy, with hair loss and incessant scratching. Depending on the severity of your dog's condition, switching to a raw diet will pay huge dividends especially with hair re-growth and stopping the itchiness. And not least putting a lustre back into the coat which might have been lacking. Feeding raw will also help any 'yeasty' conditions, itchy paws and gunky wax build- up in the ears.”

Poppy’s Picnic describes the changes you can expect to see from feeding raw food as ‘The 7 Signs of Happiness’:

Since launching the campaign last year, Poppy’s Picnic is thrilled to see blogs springing up online, as well as retailers getting behind the movement. In addition to guest videos, Facebook Lives, expert blogs and promotions, a new feature for this year’s RAWgust includes the Stockist in the Spotlight Series which sees a member of the Poppy’s Picnic team interview proud independent stockists about their business and passion for raw feeding.

Dylan continues, “RAWgust is inclusive, it’s meant to make a difference to as many dogs as possible and I’m thrilled to see the uptake. Having launched the Change 4 Life campaign for the Department of Health I knew a campaign like RAWgust is what the industry was missing, and I’m pleased to see how well its translated. It’s simple really, just as humans need fresh food to stay in tip top condition, so do dogs. I desperately want to encourage owners to give as much consideration to what’s in their dog’s bowls as they do to what goes into their own bodies.”

*The survey of 1,500 adult Brits was conducted by independent research company, Ginger Research

Survey highlights positive attitudes towards raw feeding

Nutriment has released the results of its 2019 consumer survey. Designed to provide an unbiased insight into the dog food landscape as it stands today (both raw and non-raw), the survey delved into consumer perspectives on dog food, nutrition and health.

The survey, which launched in February of this year and is still open for submissions, was promoted during renowned dog show Crufts in March. It attracted more than 2,000 responses from dog owners across the UK and Ireland. As an innovator in the raw pet food arena, Nutriment consistently strives to be responsive and proactive to consumer demands and requirements.

Both consumers who raw feed and those who choose not to were invited to submit their views and experiences of their pet’s health and feeding. Nutriment plan to utilise this knowledge in the development of further raw feeding products and solutions.

Of the dog owners surveyed, 95% who changed their pet’s food to a raw diet felt it had improved their dog’s health. Further to this, 48% felt that a diet change was effective in treating their dog’s health condition, compared to just 14% for vet prescriptions and 14% for homeopathic/holistic remedies. T

he survey also produced some very interesting feedback on common health complaints for dogs and raw feeding as a solution. For example, 34% of the dog owners surveyed reported diarrhoea and 28% reported itchy skin as common health conditions for their dogs. 85% and 84% felt that a raw diet helped to treat diarrhoea and itchy skin respectively. The results can be viewed at https://www.community.nutriment.co.uk/results/

“Our recent survey has been a fantastic opportunity to publicise the benefits and advantages of raw feeding, which has received unsubstantiated criticism from unreliable sources in the past. With a lack of research into raw feeding, and a tendency for pet food companies to pay for research that suits them, this survey was our way of finding evidence to support the benefits of raw feeding – though we had no knowledge of what the outcome would be,” comments Suzanne Brock, Managing Director of Nutriment.

“The Nutriment team has a genuine passion for all things raw and a commitment to making this diet as accessible as possible. As dog owners and canine nutritionists themselves, they’re advocates and promoters of raw feeding and BARF methods and its benefits on canine health.”

Nutriment’s portfolio of innovative, high-quality raw feeding solutions includes: Core – expertly formulated recipes for dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes; Just – one ingredient, complementary meal solutions for supporting at-home meal preparations; Dinner for Cats & Dinner for Dogs – raw feeding solutions for smaller, less physically active breeds; Laverstoke Park Farm – certified organic raw meals for complete nutrition; and Support, specifically designed to provide support for ongoing health concerns. All of Nutriment’s ranges and recipes are expertly formulated with the support of veterinary partners and industry professionals and in response to the demands of consumers.

“We recently announced that we have expanded our production facility at Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire, which was necessary to facilitate the increasing demand that we are receiving for our raw food products. With the feedback we have received from our survey, and the chatter that raw feeding continues to generate in the industry, it’s no surprise that dog owners worldwide are making the informed decision to switch their dogs’ diets to raw, biologically appropriate ones.”

Nutriment will be exhibiting at the UK’s number one pet industry event - PATS Telford on 22- 23 September where they have also entered the PetQuip Awards for their exporting successes and Support range of products.

Advertising watchdog upholds complaint against PETA

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against an advert from animal rights campaigners PETA displayed on the sides of buses earlier this year, which claimed “Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Wool is just as cruel as fur.”

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against an advert from animal rights campaigners PETA displayed on the sides of buses earlier this year, which claimed “Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Wool is just as cruel as fur.”

The message “GO WOOL-FREE THIS WINTER PeTA” was positioned alongside an image of a woman with the neck of her jumper pulled over her face.

Ten complainants, who believed that sheep needed to be shorn for health reasons and therefore wool should not be compared to fur, challenged whether the claim “wool is just as cruel as fur” was misleading and could be substantiated.

In response to the complaints People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said that over the last few decades the general public had become more aware of the cruelty that existed in the fur trade.

“However, the same abuses and suffering had also been documented in the wool trade but were not as well known by the public. They provided details of cruelty and abuse that occurred in both the fur and wool industries, which included genetic alterations and the mutilation of animals.

“For example, in the fur industry animals were bred to grow to a larger size and to become overweight so that their pelts would be larger and fetch more money.

“Likewise, in the wool industry sheep were bred with genetic abnormalities which compromised their welfare, such as merino sheep in Australia that were deliberately bred for the largest possible skin surface area which meant more wool per animal.

In its ruling the ASA said: “We considered people who saw the ad would interpret the claim “wool is just as cruel as fur” as equating the conditions in which sheep were kept and the methods by which wool was obtained with the conditions and methods used in the fur industry.

“However, sheep were not killed for their wool as animals were in the fur industry and there were standards in place relating to their general welfare including relating to the shearing process. We therefore concluded on that basis that the claim was misleading and in breach of the Code.”

Arden Grange celebrates 'Sensitive September'

Throughout September Arden Grange will be celebrating the success of its range of products developed especially for cats and dog with dietary allergies or intolerances...

Throughout September Arden Grange will be celebrating the success of its range of products developed especially for cats and dog with dietary allergies or intolerances.

The company says: "Our Sensitive range is extremely popular and regularly receives praise for helping dogs with digestive and skin sensitivities get back to optimum health and vitality just like Boycie, the three-year-old boxer. As a puppy Boycie was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and later in life was diagnosed with severe gastroenteritis. Due to the damage caused internally, the vets recommended that he would need to transition onto a sensitive food.

"During his recovery Boycie developed a sensitivity to chicken (as well as many other things) which made finding a diet difficult as almost all sensitive foods his owners found contained poultry protein.

"Boycie’s owner trialled him on our Sensitive Adult Ocean White Fish & Potato dog food and has never looked back! Since being on our sensitive range and with careful management of his diet Boycie has maintained excellent gastro health and his owner always get comments about how healthy he looks and how shiny his coat is.

"We would love to hear more stories like Boycie’s, so please send us your pet’s success stories by email or via message on Facebook or Instagram so we can share them with our followers! Alternatively, you can post them on your social media profiles and tag us using the #AGsensitivetails.

"We will also be sharing helpful articles and advice on our social platforms and blog throughout the month with the celebrations culminating in a fantastic competition to win lots of sensitive themed prizes for your cats and dogs!

"You can ensure you don’t miss out on any of our sensitive stories and competition this September by signing up to our newsletter or follow the hashtags #ardengrangeuk #AGsensitivetails on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

"Our sensitive range includes; Sensitive dry dog food in three life stage varieties, Sensitive Partners wet dog food, Crunchy Bites Sensitive dog treats and Sensitive adult dry cat food. Please note that there is a small proportion of chicken oil in our Sensitive food, but this ingredient is rarely associated with adverse food reactions in dogs as it is a pure,  filtered source that’s had any large antigenic (potentially reactive) protein molecules removed (when dogs suffer from food allergies, it’s the protein rather than fat within an ingredient that the immune system reacts to)."

National census reveals habits of UK's guinea pigs

Over 5,000 guinea pig owners lent their voice to a census aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of an estimated 400,000 pet guinea pigs living in the UK...

Over 5,000 guinea pig owners lent their voice to a census aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of an estimated 400,000 pet guinea pigs living in the UK.

Key findings

  • Only 3% of guinea pig owners have their guinea pigs insured
  • 46% of guinea pig owners have rescue guinea pigs
  • 65% of guinea pig owners feed hay as their primary food source

Burgess Pet Care has published the findings from its Great British Guinea Pig Census, an online census for guinea pig owners living in the UK, with over 5000 guinea pig owners taking part.

The census was launched earlier this year to help raise awareness and improve understanding of the estimated 400,000* guinea pigs that are living as pets in the UK. Despite being an enduringly popular pet choice with young children, guinea pigs – like many other small animals – have very particular needs when it comes to their welfare.

The questions in the census were designed to identify any areas of widespread misunderstanding when it comes to guinea pig care and knowledge, and the answers will be used to help improve the health and wellbeing of pet guinea pigs in the UK.

Peter Lancaster, marketing manager at Burgess Pet Care, said: “Guinea pigs make fantastic pets but, as with other small animals, they have very particular needs when it comes to their welfare. Thankfully, according to the findings of our census, we found that the majority of guinea pig owners who provided answers on the five welfare needs – diet, company, health, environment and behaviour, are conscientious with their care, reflecting their dedication to keeping their pets happy.

“It was fantastic to see the number of guinea pig owners entering the census keep rising by the day, and we’re reassured that there are thousands of well-informed owners out there. However, despite these resoundingly positive findings, there is always work to be done when it comes to improving standards of animal welfare. The information we’ve received from this census does identify the gaps of knowledge in certain areas, and we anticipate these gaps to be much larger when it comes to less-informed and engaged guinea pig owners.”

The census, comprised of 5045 respondents, found:

Diet

  • 76% of owners believe feeding hay is the most important part of their guinea pig(s) diet.
  • 65% of owners say feeding hay is their guinea pigs’ primary food source
  • 49% of guinea pig owners give their guinea pigs feeding hay once per day

Companionship

  • 46% of owners have a pair of guinea pigs
  • 52% of owners have more than two guinea pigs
  • 74% of owners with just one guinea pig, but said they would consider welcoming another

Health

  • Only 3% of owners have their guinea pig(s) insured
  • 17% of owners take their guinea pigs to the vet once a year
  • 33% of owners take their guinea pigs to the vets less than once per year

Environment

  • 88% of owners provide their guinea pigs with additional space to roam outside of their housing

Behaviour

  • 45% of owners say their guinea pigs were from a rescue centre
  • 24% of owners believe social interaction puts their guinea pigs in a good mood.
How will Boris Johnson find time for new dog?

With the news that 10 Downing Street is now the new home to a young rescue pup, dog lovers countrywide are left wondering how the PM will have any time to properly look after his new companion.

With the news that 10 Downing Street is now the new home to a young rescue pup, dog lovers countrywide are left wondering how the PM will have any time to properly look after his new companion.

This isn't just a problem for the nation's Prime Minister however. Given that 49% of UK adults own a pet according to PDSA, understanding how best to train and raise a dog is a major concern for a large proportion of the working population.

Amidst the myriad responsibilities and obligations we must bear in mind in our daily lives, it is important for dog owners to understand how long it will take to raise and look after their new hound. It is also vital that owners are aware of the needs that their individual dog will have, based on their breed.

Dr. Steph Wenban, Front of The Pack's vet and pet wellbeing expert, provides the following advice:

"Each dog is an individual and the time needed to train them will vary. For example, Labradors are quite food motivated and this can be advantageous when it comes to training and rewarding good behaviour.

“However, other dogs are more motivated by toys so it is important to find out what your dog values. When it comes to timings, you should aim to work in 10-15 min sessions and always provide lots of positive reinforcement for your dog. With this, you should be able to achieve the basics in 5-6 weeks with lots of practice and praise."

Boris Johnson’s girlfriend Carrie Symonds posed for a number of pictures outside Downing Street with her new dog. She tweeted a picture of herself with the Jack Russell cross puppy, saying: “Meet our gorgeous little rescue puppy, Dilyn #AdoptDontShop”.

Industry seeks leading role as CITES targets marine ornamental fish trade

Trade bodies from around the world are calling on aquatic businesses to sign up to help them to compile a comprehensive picture of the marine ornamental fish trade...

Trade bodies from around the world are calling on aquatic businesses to sign up to help them to compile a comprehensive picture of the marine ornamental fish trade.

This follows the 18th Conference of the Parties (CoP18) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), held in Geneva this August, where the international pet trade was put under the spotlight.

Amongst their decisions, CITES Parties agreed to convene a technical workshop to consider the conservation priorities and management needs related to the trade in non-CITES listed marine ornamental fish worldwide with a particular focus on data from importing and exporting countries.

Trade bodies have asked CITES Parties to fully engage industry in their assessment and analysis and are keen to work in partnership with key inter-governmental organisations such as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UN’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in providing accurate trade data to support the work now planned by CITES.

During the debate and in discussions with key Parties, the CITES Secretariat and relevant inter-governmental organisations, Dominic Whitmee of the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) representing the European Pet Organisation (EPO) and on behalf of Ornamental Fish International (OFI), the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC), the Sustainable Users Network (SUN) and IWMC World Conservation Trust, highlighted concerns about the biased representation of the trade and the importance of engaging industry stakeholders in any work going forward.

OATA’s Dominic Whitmee said: “This work could have significant implications for our industry across the globe. Interventions by Parties and others demonstrated a troubling lack of knowledge about the trade and a seemingly inherent view that the trade is unsustainable and in need of management and reform. This may be the case in some instances but it is unfair to categorise the entire industry in this way.

“If we can agree on a strategic, inter-governmental partnership involving industry we may have the opportunity to develop a programme of work which identifies well-informed, reliable and constructive outcomes that will help ensure a sustainable long-term future for our industry. We cannot support a rushed and ill-considered process or one led by those with a track record of seeking to damage our trade.”

OFI’s Svein Fossa said: “It is clear from discussions in CITES that some people are targeting the international pet trade. To achieve a constructive approach the engagement of our member businesses will be paramount – to provide the data needed to develop a sound understanding of trade volumes and pathways. Without good baseline data we can expect ill-informed decision-making and potentially damaging outcomes.

“If our member businesses do not engage in this process we should expect an acceleration of new and potentially damaging reforms to our sector. We would therefore welcome businesses with a particular interest or role in importing, exporting or selling marine fish species to get in touch with their respective country or international trade association to see how they can help support the future of their business.”

Robert Likins, Vice President of Government Affairs for PIJAC said: “For the second straight CoP, very limited time was allowed for discussing proposed listings of the species important to the pet trade such as reptiles, amphibians and arachnids, and no opportunity was given to trade bodies to offer their comments on the proposals, despite the fact that they represent the people directly affected by these listings.

“This is very troubling as CITES has increased focus on species in the pet trade recently. We at PIJAC, along with other pet trade associations will be delivering an open letter to the CITES Secretariat expressing our concerns and proposing process solutions that will provide for truly ethical and impartial debate on these complicated wildlife trade and conservation issues.”

UK businesses should contact OATA (info@ornamentalfish.org), US businesses should contact PIJAC (bob@pijac.org) and other businesses can contact OFI (OFI Secretariat secretariat@ofish.org).

US Secret Service dog awarded ‘Animal OBE’

A US Secret Service dog is to be honoured with a Medal by the UK’s leading veterinary charity, PDSA, for hisoutstanding devotion to duty while protecting the President and First Family from an intruder at the White House.

A US Secret Service dog is to be honoured with a Medal by the UK’s leading veterinary charity, PDSA, for hisoutstanding devotion to duty while protecting the President and First Family from an intruder at the White House.

Special Operations Canine, Hurricane, who worked with his handler Officer Marshall Mirarchi for four years, will receive the PDSA Order of Merit* – known as the animal equivalent of the OBE.

Hurricane was trained as part of the USSS Emergency Response Team and provided specialist protection to the White House and its grounds.

Hurricane will formally receive his Medal from PDSA in October, during a special ceremony London. He will be the first foreign animal to receive the honour, which was instituted in 2014 and has been awarded to just 30 other recipients.

Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director General, Jan McLoughlin, said: “We are very proud to announce that Hurricane will become the latest recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit.

“He had an outstanding career with the US Secret Service, and went above and beyond the call of duty when an intruder tried to gain access to the White House. Despite suffering a ferocious assault he never faltered from his duty.

“Through the PDSA Animal Awards programme we seek to raise the status of animals in society and honour the incredible contribution they make to our lives. Hurricane’s achievements warrant the highest recognition, making him a worthy recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit.”

Hurricane’s story

US Secret Service Special Operations Canine, Hurricane, is famed within his Unit for his outstanding drive, determination and courage. He may be small in stature, but his power and tenacity know no bounds.

On 22 October 2014, these attributes were tested to the limits. Canine Handler Officer Marshall Mirarchi and Hurricane were on duty at the White House with the US Secret Service Emergency Response Team (ERT). Suddenly and unexpectedly, a man vaulted the White House fence and sprinted across the lawn, towards where President Obama and his family were residing.

The man’s intentions and state of mind were not known, but it is the job of the Secret Service to prevent any threat to the President.

The first attempt by a Secret Service canine team to stop the intruder was unsuccessful but fortunately Officer Mirarchi and Hurricane were stationed nearby and ready to offer their support. Seeing the first struggle, Mirarchi gave the command and Hurricane flew into action. He made contact with the suspect, intending to push him back to the perimeter fence.

In the ensuing struggle, Hurricane was kicked, punched and swung through the air. Despite this violent, repeated assault, his jaws were locked onto the suspect’s arm and he never gave up. He continued to drive forward and finally grounded the intruder, enabling armed officers to take him into custody.

Though severely battered, Hurricane refused to be beaten and carried out his duties faultlessly.

Hurricane retired on health grounds in September 2016. Officer Mirarchi believes the ordeal on the White House lawn that night contributed to his physical issues.

Hurricane’s heroic actions that night thwarted a serious security breach. He stood between an aggressive intruder and the US President, who was at home with his family.   Hurricane’s devotion to duty and service, while enduring a horrific personal attack, make him a worthy recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit.

Award reaction

Marshall Mirarchi, Hurricane’s former USSS handler and adoptive dad, said: “Hurricane was such a legend within the Service. He loved working and his talent for the job impressed me every single day. That night, he stepped up and delivered under circumstances that no amount of training could prepare him for. I have never witnessed such violence toward a dog before but it didn’t stop him from doing his job.

“I am so proud of him and extremely thankful to PDSA for honouring his service and actions in this way. We are very excited to visit London – Hurricane will be given the full VIP treatment, just as he deserves.”

Thomas Sullivan, Chief of the Secret Service Uniformed Division, said: “The Secret Service Uniformed Division canine program is, without a doubt, one of the best in the world, and Officer Mirarchi and Hurricane executed their mission flawlessly. The entire Secret Service is proud of Officer Mirarchi and Hurricane and all the men and women and canines that do that job every day.”

New York Times best-selling author Maria Goodavage, who nominated Hurricane for a PDSA award, said: “I first met Hurricane and Marshall when I was researching my book, Secret Service Dogs. When I heard what happened that night and how impeccably Hurricane behaved, I was absolutely blown away. The skill and talent of these dog teams is second to none and I am completely thrilled to see Hurricane honored with the PDSA Order of Merit.”

About PDSA

PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, providing free and reduced-cost veterinary care to the pets of people in financial need. The charity strives to improve the wellbeing of all pets’ lives through providing preventive care, educating pet owners and treating pets when they become sick or injured. Today, PDSA treats around 470,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable pets a year, through its nationwide network of 48 Pet Hospitals. For more information about the charity visit www.pdsa.org.uk

PDSA Animal Awards Programme

PDSA’s Animal Awards Programme was instituted in 1943 by the charity’s founder, Maria Dickin, CBE. She believed that, if animals were recognised for their heroic actions and the vital roles they play in society, it would help to raise their status, ensuring they are better treated. The charity continues this legacy today with the world’s leading Animal Awards Programme.

The programme is comprised of three major awards; the PDSA Dickin Medal, instituted in 1943, which acknowledges outstanding acts of animal gallantry while serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, worldwide. It is recognised worldwide as the animals’ Victoria Cross.

The PDSA Gold Medal, instituted in 2002, rewards civilian acts of animal bravery or exceptional devotion to duty. It is now widely recognised as the animals’ George Cross.

The PDSA Order of Merit, instituted in 2014, recognises animals who display outstanding devotion above and beyond normal companionship, and animal acts that symbolise their special relationship with humans. It has become recognised as the animals’ OBE.

Brits splash the cash on beauty treatment for pooches

A new survey by FURminator shows that it’s also important our dogs look the part, prompting the pet grooming experts to urge retailers to capitalise on this growing trend...

A new survey by FURminator shows that it’s also important our dogs look the part, prompting the pet grooming experts to urge retailers to capitalise on this growing trend.

Half (50%) of Brits reveal they spend just as much on their dog’s holiday prep as they do their own and 1 in 10 owners will go the extra mile spending upwards of £150 – equating to one sixth of the average cost of a holiday for a third of Brits!.

And, it’s clear hair care is the main priority, as a third of owners reveal bathing, a blow dry and grooming are top of the list for their dog.

Stuart Simons, expert groomer at FURminator, comments: “It goes without saying that during the summer months, holidays are a huge priority for Brits and it’s great to see our pets aren’t forgotten. This presents a big opportunity for retailers to maximise the summer months and help owners give their furry friends a pampering fix before their getaway.

“Grooming is an important part of pet ownership as not only does it help to boost the bond between pet and parent but also ensures any dead hair is removed and natural oils are released from within the skin to improve coat health and shine.

"That said, it’s important to encourage owners to implement a regular grooming routine to ensure pets are always looking their best. Home grooming can be a really effective way of supporting pets’ health and wellbeing together with trips to local groomers.”

FURminator has a range of grooming tools and hygiene products for pets, which offer owners a great solution for home grooming. For more information please visit www.furminator.net.

Poppy’s Picnic will be announcing enticing trade deals and new additions to the Poppy’s Picnic COMPLETE range at PATS Telford (Stand H11) from 22-23 September.

The company is seeking to expand its cohort of quality independent stockists throughout the UK and is encouraging interested parties to arrange a time to discuss trade options.

Dylan Watkins launched Poppy’s Picnic in 2016 to make it easy for people to feed their dogs a raw food diet, the way nature intended. The company’s tasty wholesome recipes have been lovingly crafted with the help of canine nutritionists and fourth generation butchers who supply the fresh meat from their own abattoir, which means 100% traceability and makes the supply chain minimal. With no hidden nasties, the balanced meals contain all the goodness a dog needs for optimal health and wellbeing.

Poppy’s Picnic dog food has the highest rated meals in the UK by All About Dog Food with a 95% rating. The company has also achieved over 1000 glowing reviews on Google, Facebook and Reviews.io. Just recently the brand beat thousands of start-ups to reach number seven nationally in NatWest’s Power Up Index. The company prides itself on its customer service and the VIP (Very Important Paws) Team has been nominated for the ‘Team of the Year Award’ for Wales and South West region at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2019.

Commenting on the company’s growth Dylan said, “Since exhibiting at PATS last year we’ve significantly grown our fantastic range of stockists. We’ve enjoyed working closely with them and supporting them with a brand new range of POS materials and via our campaigns including our Stockists in the Spotlight series. We’re passionate about getting the brand out there and changing dogs’ lives. This year alone we’ve fed dog food on Come Dine With Me, showcased our food live on This Morning with Eamonn and Ruth, and just recently spoke to over 13 radio stations with canine nutritionist Anna Webb following the launch of our RAWgust campaign.”

Manchester-based pet bed manufacturer Scruffs has recently appointed a new head of sales to cover the UK and Ireland market.

Chris Johnson joins the Scruffs team to oversee all sales activities and manage the field sales team.

He said: “Working closely with all members of the Scruffs team, my aim is to maximise sales with new and existing customers, whilst increasing our brand awareness in the market.”

We grabbed five minutes with Chris to find out his passions and goals both in and out of the office.

What are you passionate about?

“Outside of work my biggest passion has to be football. When I was younger I played a lot of football but due to injuries (and age) I have resorted to the watching role now. I follow Aston Villa and have managed to persuade my son to support Villa too so we enjoy going to the games together whenever we can. In work I am obviously passionate about sales. I love chasing new business and seeing your hard work come to fruition in a retail environment.”

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

“We are just starting work on some big online projects which will see the Scruffs® brand elevated online. We will have a Scruffs brand store on Amazon in the coming months which will utilise all of our marketing content and images so I think this will look pretty cool and should help to increase sales too."

For more information, please contact a member of the Scruffs marketing team using pr@petslovescruffs.com or via phone on +44 (0) 161 702 5060.

Gold standard in rabbit care for veterinary hospital

Valley Veterinary Hospital in Cardiff is the very first practice in Wales to be awarded a Gold Standard Award for excellence in rabbit care by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund, the UK’s largest charity solely dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of rabbits.

Valley Veterinary Hospital joins just 11 other practices in the UK that have the Gold Standard seal of approval awarded by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF).

RWAF's award standards are extremely high as veterinary practices must go through a very lengthy application process and prove their standards of care are nothing short of excellent. Valley Veterinarian, Tariq Abou-Zahr (pictured below), applied for the award as the practice's on-site exotic animal specialist.

Rabbits are the third most popular household pet in the UK but often the most misunderstood. The Gold Standard Award helps rabbit owners recognise a practice that understands how to properly care for these misunderstood animals.

As the first practice to receive the Gold Award in Wales, RWAF is hoping that Valley Veterinary Hospital will pioneer the way for other Welsh practices to follow suit and apply for the award.

Any veterinary practices interested in applying for the Rabbit Friendly Vet List should visit https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-vets/vet-membership/

The times when you could walk straight into a ‘job for life’ out of school have long since passed. But Karen Jones is the exception to the rule and has just celebrated 40 years at the same practice in Wrexham.

Back in 1979, Karen started her first ever job as an auxiliary nurse at veterinary Practice, Rhyd Broughton Veterinary Group.

Over the years, Karen has worked as an auxiliary nurse, receptionist, reception manager and then, returning to the practice after maternity leave, she joined the admin team and hasn’t looked back.

She said: “I’ve been lucky that I’ve been able to move around within the practice. It has kept everything fresh.

“The management team have accommodated everything I have asked for as my life and responsibilities have changed over the years. And I would like to thank everyone I have worked with. It doesn’t feel like 40 years, working with such great people, and long may it continue!”

Practice manager, Sandra Lewis said: “Karen has been an incredibly dedicated member of the team and it has been an immense pleasure working with her. She is a favourite with the staff and clients alike. The fact that she is still here is a testament to her dedication and to the management team here.”

Dragons’ Den pet-food duo to exhibit at PATS

Two pet food entrepreneurs who stole the hearts of TV viewers when they appeared on Dragons’ Den earlier this month have chosen to exhibit at PATS Telford in September.

Husband-and-wife team Jack Walker and Aneisha Soobroyen, who founded the dog and cat food brand Scrumbles a year ago, were invited onto the hit BBC2 show after researchers heard them on Radio Leicester.

The duo were angling for cash from animal-loving Dragon Deborah Meaden. She was very interested in what they had to say, but demanded a 20 per cent cut of the business in return for investing £60,000.

In the end the savvy duo turned the offer down – much to the surprise of viewers and of Aneisha, who thought her husband was going to accept it!

But Jack said: “We are big admirers of Deborah and have no doubt she would add a huge amount of value to the company but the deal wasn’t right for us and our supporters on the day.

“It was edited to look like Aneisha and I didn’t agree, but that was all for TV. It was certainly entertaining!”

The couple could not believe the reaction to the programme and the amount of exposure it brought them, with editorial from The Sun and Daily Mail, radio breakfast shows and more media appearances in the pipeline.

“It’s given us an amazing platform to introduce the brand to millions more customers. What’s been most heart-warming has been the support we’ve seen from our existing customers and the Scrumbles community – we have the best customers!” said Jack.

With such a buzz around the brand, it was a no-brainer to choose PATS - the UK’s No 1 pet industry exhibition – to help capitalise on all the recent publicity.

Jack said: “We attended PATS Telford when we first launched, and visited Sandown, as we always like to keep ahead of the latest trends and innovations in the industry.

“We decided to exhibit at PATS this year as it’s the best way to reach the hundreds of fantastic independent businesses that make up the backbone of the pet industry. As a team of two, we can’t always reach as many customers as we’d wish on the road or on the phone, and PATS brings everybody under one roof. It’s a great place to be!”

Jack and Aneisha both previously had careers outside the pet industry. They chose to launch their new brand following their own experiences of trying to source suitable food for their cat Boo, who suffered a series of tummy upsets.

Aneisha said: “It was about three years ago when Boo had issues. This led us to discover the power of probiotics and the importance of gut health, which sewed the seed for what was to become Scrumbles.

“We’ve both worked within food and consumer goods across sales, marketing and operations. We’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredibly innovative and ethical businesses such as Innocent drinks and Bear Nibbles. Our experience has helped us understand the challenges that may be ahead.”

The duo will be bringing their entire Scrumbles range for dogs and cats to PATS Telford 2019, where they will be launching their new wet food and treats. The range specialises in healthy, gut-friendly treats and probiotic food tailored to breeds and life stage, with everything made in the UK.

Jack said: “We’re really looking forward to attending PATS and doing business there. We understand pet businesses come in all shapes and sizes so this year we have split our offering into two. For groomers, boutiques and smaller pet businesses we’re running an introductory deal on our cat and dog treats, so businesses needn’t worry about large orders and delivery costs. For more established businesses we have a starter deal to give them a great deal on a comprehensive offering of food and treats.”

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.

Calls for compassionate leave after the death of a pet

A petition calling for the allowance of bereavement leave following the death of a pet has nearly reached 10,000 signatures. Emma McNulty started the petition after being sacked from her job for missing work after the death of her beloved dog Millie.

In the UK all employees have the right to take time off to deal with an emergency concerning a dependant. This can apply to spouses, parents, grandparents, children or someone who depends on you for care, but it is unlikely that this benefit would include the death of a pet. However, is this fair?

More and more families are seeing their furry friends as loved family members rather than owned pets. Research from Front of The Pack found that:

  • 85% of millennials agree that dogs should be treated like a part of the family
  • 53% of millennials agree that companies should offer employees pet-ernity leave (paid leave to spend time with new pets)
  • 46% of millennials think of themselves as a pet parent rather than a pet owner

Dr. Steph Wenban (pictured), Front of The Pack's vet and pet wellbeing expert, offers the following commentary:

"For many homes, pets constitute as family members and are treated with the same love and care as a relative. Therefore, the loss of a pet is extremely saddening and can affect the owners ability to function just as the bereavement of a normal family member. Employers should recognise this, compassionate leave should be granted on emotional attachment and subsequent loss, not black and white guidelines that are hugely subjective from person to person as to what constitutes as loss."

Natures Menu creates brainteaser to celebrate national event

Natures Menu has created a 'fun' brainteaser for dog owners to solve as part of the celebrations for National Dog Day on August 26...

Can you spot the puppy amongst the dogs in the image above? A brand-new brainteaser is making Brits go ‘barking’ mad, with the average person taking 21.2 seconds to find the adorable puppy packed in amongst the dogs.

The graphic has been created by Natures Menu, the UK’s number one for raw pet food and Europe’s leading expert for raw and natural food for dogs, to celebrate National Dog Day on August 26.

With over 37 years in the business, Natures Menu is certainly not short of having fed wholesome and natural food to a puppy or two!

Craig Taylor, Managing Director of Natures Menu said: “As the leading dog and cat food expert, we wanted to celebrate National Dog Day with a bit of fun, by challenging dog lovers with a puzzling mind-muddler. The current record set is an impressive 15 seconds, which may take some beating – are you up to the task? New range from Betty Miller brings baked treats to dogs on a grain free diet

Baked has long been reported to be best by Betty Miller, which is why the UK based pet treat brand has extended its selection of baked treats to include a new grain free range, allowing even more dogs to enjoy the company’s great recipes.

The introduction of the new range comes following demand from customers as managing director, Alex Baker, explains: “Over the last year, we have had many customers ask if we can make a treat that does not contain grain. They understand the benefits of baked treats and want to feed them to their dog but also find that their pet struggles to digest grain.

“Working with our nutritionist, we set about designing a new Grain Free range, which would be every bit as healthy, nutritious and palatable as our Everyday and Wheat Free ranges and came up with a selection of six new flavours.”

Betty Miller’s new Grain Free Range includes:

  • Original Big Bones
  • Peanut Butter Big Bones
  • Duck and orange Bones
  • Banana, Apple and Blueberry Bones
  • Cheese Little Bones
  • Garlic Chicken Paws

Alex continues: “So far the new treats have been hugely popular, with many pet shops reporting to us that they are selling well, while sales on our own website are also strong. At Betty Miller we really do believe that baked is best which is why we oven bake every single treat we make. By doing so, it preserves all of the goodness of the ingredients, meaning the treats are better for dogs.”

Betty Miller has also extended its Everyday range which now includes:

  • Original Big Bones
  • Milky Little Bones
  • Cheese Little Bones
  • Mixed Big Bones
  • Charcoal Little Bones
  • Charcoal Big Bones
  • Charcoal Bones
  • Liver Bones
  • Cheese Fantails and Petites
