A Manchester pet and aquatic store with the distinctive name of Gay-Lyfe is to close after being in business for more than 50 years with the internet and changing shopping habits being blamed for the move.
"Things have changed over the years,” owner Mark Bootes told the Manchester Eveing News. “Kids used to have pets and now they have iPads. A lot of people in the area don't keep pets any more. That’s one of the reasons why we’re closing.”
The pet and aquatic store in Levenshulme was first opened by George and Norma Ormrod in 1965 before their nephew, Mark Bootes, joined the business in 1980.
It sold animals of all shapes and sizes, but it was tropical fish where Mark carved out a niche for the business.
"When we announced we were closing on Facebook, a lot of people said ‘oh I used to go there’. But that’s exactly it, people used to come to us but now they go elsewhere or buy online.”
Though the shop is closing Mark will continue to import tropical fish from around the world with his colleague, James Best.

Yorkshire pet treat manufacturer The Innocent Pet has launched the UK’s first luxury birthday cake mix for dogs – so they can celebrate their big day too!
Founder Chloe Heaton said: “Every time we have a birthday in our family, our lurcher Bongo – the inspiration behind our business - always manages to steal a piece of the cake. We thought it was about time we made him a cake of his own…but one that contained meat!”
Mum of two, Chloe, who runs the family business with her husband, Justin, at their factory in Wetherby, said: “It is easy to make - simply add eggs and water to the mix which contains air-dried British duck and a grain-free flour and fruit blend. The mix can be turned into a large birthday cake or several cupcakes in less than half an hour – bakers can have their own Great Birthday Bark Off and decorate their bakes with an array of toppings such as cream cheese, peanut butter and treats. It is so simple and fun - even children can enjoy getting involved.”
The kit consists of 2 sachets: one with air-dried British duck and herb pieces (the duck has been carefully sourced from Red Tractor farms, and gently air-dried for up to 4 days to maintain nutrients and flavour). The second sachet contains grain free flours, gluten free baking powder and a blend of cranberry, apple and nettle.
Chloe said: “With no added sugar or grains not only do dogs thoroughly enjoy this recipe, but it is a healthy alternative to other birthday cakes. You could say that dogs really can have their cake and eat it - especially because they have the equivalent of 7 birthdays each year!”
Dogs are very much seen as being part of the family and people love to involve them in celebrations. A recent survey showed that 75% of dog owners celebrate their dog’s birthday.
They’re inviting customers to share their doggy birthday cake pictures on social media using #birthdaybarkoff.
As well as the Birthday Cake Mix, The Innocent Pet produces a range of air-dried British meat treats and food for dogs and cats and also caters for small animals.

Pet food manufacturer CSJ has revealed its sales to Europe of natural canine feeds, herbal supplements and treats are continuing to strengthen despite all the uncertainty caused by Brexit.
With stockists in countries, including Denmark, France, Poland and Switzerland, CSJ’s sales have always been built on the strong foundation laid by owner Ceri Rundle and her father.
They began a quest in the 1980s for a high quality affordable food for their working Border Collies and finding nothing suitable Ceri decided the only option was to devise her own so with the help of vets, a herbalist and the UK’s leading nutritionist, she devised a unique range – CSJ.
A spokesperson for the company commented: “This ‘grass roots’ knowledge and experience has paid dividends for us and – Brexit or not – working and competing dog owners are still especially keen to gain a winning edge through quality feeding.”

Supreme Petfoods repeats award success
Supreme Petfoods has doubled up on last year’s success in the Pet Product Marketing Retailer Recommended Awards. Retailers chose the company’s flagship product Supreme Science Selective as the winner in the Small Animal Product of the Year, for the second year running. The company also once again scooped the Innovation of the Year – a category which spans all pet sectors – this time with its Tiny Friends Farm Eco Bedding.
Supreme’s Marketing Manager, Claire Hamblion says the awards are really special because they rely on votes from independent retailers.
“We’re thrilled that our customers throughout the pet trade love our products. We know that they will be taking into account their own assessment of the product and the support they receive, as well as feedback from their customers.
"It means that our products are really working for everybody and of course providing nutrition that fuels happy, healthy pets. There’s no stronger endorsement we could ask for and we’re absolutely delighted to be winners again in 2019.”
Never content to rest on its laurels, the Supreme team has been busy this year refreshing the Selective range packaging to enhance stand out on shelf and expanding its range of Selective Naturals treats, which triumphed in the innovation award last year, with two new varieties – Country Loops and Harvest Loops.
Tiny Friends Farm Eco Bedding, which launched in the spring of 2018, landed at a time when caring for the planet was becoming higher on most people’s agenda. It’s emerged as an increasingly important trend this year with pet owners actively seeking out green and sustainable products.
The winning product is made from surplus paper from paper mills, which would otherwise be sent to landfill and the packaging is also completely recyclable. Even the farm where biomass boilers dry the paper into soft bedding, is powered by wind turbines.
Claire says Supreme works hard to stay close to its customers and to identify what they want.
“We’ve been ahead of the crowd with a number of products, such as our grain-free and natural category ranges. It means our products are not a hard-sell and there is a strong drive for repeat purchase.
"We have also invested in solutions to improve merchandising of the small pets category which allows pet owners to more easily understand the fixture and self-select the product they want.”
Retailers interested in stocking Supreme can find out more about the product range at www.supremepetfoods.com and they can also access free materials in the Retailer Zone: https://supremepetfoods.com/retailer-zone/.

What it means to win a New Product Award at PATS
Winning a New Product Award at the UK’s number one pet industry exhibition can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. Four companies who triumphed at Telford in 2018 reveal what the accolade has done for their business...
Winning a New Product Award at the UK’s number one pet industry exhibition can have a tremendous impact on the fortunes of a PATS exhibitor. It can help turn a new launch into a bestselling item in pet stores around the country and clinch that all-important export deal.
One of the main reasons why the Award is held in such high esteem is the fact it is decided by a panel of independent retailers, who know what it takes for a product to fly on the shelves.
Entries for the New Product Showcase and Awards at PATS Telford, which takes place on September 22-23, are starting to flood in as exhibitors get ready to showcase their latest launches to retailers and buyers from the UK and abroad.
The New Product Showcase and Awards are sponsored by pbwnews.
Here four companies who triumphed in the New Product Awards at PATS Telford in 2018 reveal what the accolade has done for their business.
Case Study No 1
Petlife International – Winner of Bird Product Award with Harkers 4 in 1 Soluble, PATS Telford 2018
How did you react to winning a New Product Award at PATS Telford?
We were delighted that our product had been given this recognition – it proved to us that our hard work in researching, developing and marketing this particular product had been worthwhile!
Has the award helped your business?
The award has certainly increased our brand awareness – Harkers 4 in 1 Soluble is quite a niche product aimed predominantly at racing pigeons, but market awareness as a whole of the Harkers brand in general has increased because of the win.
Did it give the winning product a boost?
Absolutely. We’re a small company and don’t have a bottomless budget for advertising, so winning the award gave our product great PR.
How did you use the win to promote the product?
We announced our win from the rooftops wherever possible – via our literature, website, newsletter and even a segment in a local newspaper.
Case Study No 2
Forthglade – Winner of Dog Food Award with Turkey & Goose Gourmet Christmas Meal, PATS Telford 2018
How did you react to winning a New Product Award at PATS Telford?
We take such great care in developing the very best recipes and food we can, so we were over the moon for this to be recognised. The award and product sit proudly in a prominent position at our factory, where everyone can see it, both our team and visitors.
Has the award helped your business?
It’s great to be able to talk to our customers about our award-winning products – it demonstrates the thought and care that goes into our products, and certainly really helps our sales team with such a strong message for a great quality product.
Did it give the winning product a boost?
The product was widely available across the pet trade in the run up to Christmas last year and the award certainly helped to bolster its distribution and popularity.
Case Study No 3
Norfolk Industries – Winner of Small Animal Product Award with Recycled Paper Bedding, PATS Telford 2018
How did you react to winning a New Product Award at PATS Telford?
It was a wonderful surprise. We were very pleased and the award made attending the event very worthwhile. It’s marvellous to be recognised by our esteemed industry colleagues, and means so much to the teams producing our products.
Has the award helped your business?
Yes, it has certainly highlighted the product to potential buyers. We would definitely recommend exhibiting at PATS and putting new products forward. We have made some great relationships as a result of exhibiting, and hooked up with other businesses that share our values and eco credentials.
Did it give the winning product a boost?
Yes, buyers actually came to see us at the second day of the event to look at the award-winning products and we have since started supplying them with stock.
How did you use the win to promote the product?
We have used many ways to promote this award-winning product, including email footers, on our website, in all of our marketing materials, press releases, and business. It’s great to be able to state as a business that you have award-winning products.
Case Study No 4
Paw Naturel – Winner of Grooming Product Award with Rub & Scrub Heart Shaped Cleansing Bar, PATS Telford 2018
How did you react to winning a New Product Award at PATS Telford?
Amazing, we were really pleased. A lot of hard work and dedication went into the brand, products and staff, and to be recognised by this award was incredible. We took a lot of risks formulating new products that haven’t been done on the market before but this gamble paid off.
Has the award helped your business?
Yes, we gained a lot of PR, which has led to good exposure with new clients, and generally getting our brand name out there.
Did it give the winning product a boost?
Yes
How did you use the win to promote the product?
We blogged about it and shared it on social media. We have placed the winner’s logo on the product itself, on our website and in our brochures. At shows like Crufts we take the award trophy with us to display it near the product. It also has pride of place in our showroom.
The New Product Awards will be presented at this year’s prestigious PetQuip Awards gala dinner, which takes place on the evening of the first day of PATS Telford (Sunday, September 22).
For all the latest information on PATS Telford visit www.patshow.co.uk, where you can also register for free entry to the show.

Beaphar UK is further strengthening its sales support for retailers this flea season, with a bigger and better offering that will help them to meet the needs of customers.
Building on the success of its iconic Beaphar FIPROtec Spot-On creative, this year Beaphar is highlighting its Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO range.
"We were the first manufacturer to take a combination flea spot-on over- the-counter, bringing increased sales opportunities to all retailers and giving access to a more convenient form of flea treatment to all pet- owners," explains Dr Sue Huggett, Business Manager, Beaphar UK.
"The great thing about Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO is that is fits perfectly into busy, modern family life. When used correctly it will prevent a flea infestation from occurring, allowing pet owners to get the job done in one treatment."
Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO protects both pets and homes with one simple spot-on application. It contains fipronil, which kills adult fleas, and the Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) S-methoprene. S-methoprene interrupts the flea lifecycle, preventing flea eggs and flea larvae from developing.
"Having successfully taken Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO over-the-counter, we now want to help retailers further. With our consumer campaign, which includes eye-catching point-of-sale, advertising and online activity, we can help them to build their customer base and make the most out of this year’s flea season. And it looks set to be a good one," says Dr Huggett.
The new point of sale builds on the iconic and striking design of Beaphar FIPROtec Spot-On. It includes a counter display unit, which has been specifically designed to hold all sizes of Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO so as to support every retailer. Also available are shelf wobblers and a consumer leaflet, which explains how Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO works in easy-to- understand language – ideal for use by both retailers and consumers.
But the focus is not only on Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO. Dr Huggett explains that the manufacturer is supporting the entire Beaphar FIPROtec Range.
"The fact is, while Beaphar FIPROtec COMBO is an ideal product for busy families, no two households are the same. Different families will have different lifestyles and different flea control requirements," says Dr Huggett.
"With this in mind, we have created additional materials to promote our original Beaphar FIPROtec Spot-On products, as well as the newest addition to the Beaphar FIPROtec Range, Beaphar FIPROtec Spray."
Alongside in-store activity, Beaphar will also be increasing awareness and education around fleas online. Throughout the flea season, blogs and flea facts will be shared across their social media platforms. This activity will support the entire Beaphar FIPROtec Range, encouraging pet owners to choose the solution that best suits their own pet, their flea situation and their lifestyle.
"By stocking the complete Beaphar FIPROtec® Range and taking advantage of all the sales support we have to offer, you can meet the needs of all your customers this flea season, and maximise your sales in doing so," concludes Dr Huggett.
For more information about the Beaphar FIPROtec Range or to find out how Beaphar can support you this flea season, contact your local Sales Executive, call 0333 0066236 or email info@uk.beaphar.com

PIF holds trade mission to China for its members

Three Pet Industry Federation (PIF) member companies visited China in May as part of a trade mission to launch their products to the Chinese market, in a trip hosted by PIF and its Chinese export partner, Best for Pets Supply Chain Co., Ltd.
HOWND, Broadreach Nature and Prins Petfoods joined the trade mission, which centred around the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Expo in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. Their products were on display at the show , along with those from Natures Menu, the Big Biscuit Company and Woof & Brew, who were unable to join the trip but keen to be included. The Expo was took place over five days, attracting both public and trade, with estimates of 300,000 visitors attending over the course of the event.
The visit attracted a great deal of media interest in the UK visitors and their products, with members taking part in numerous media interviews at the event. Best for Pets Supply Chain Co. had also secured visits to the trade stand from the provincial mayor and other local dignitaries, which were complemented by evening banquets to enable networking between the UK companies and local officials. The successful trip also included external visits to the free trade zones in Fuzhou and on the island of Pintan, to enable UK companies to gain a greater understanding of how their products are received into China, clear customs and are then distributed to consumers.
Anne Wood, MD of Broadreach Nature said: ‘Being able to see first-hand the Silk Maritime event was fantastic, as were the opportunities provided by the overwhelming media interest from television and other media companies. PIF’s export partners have very valuable government contacts to underpin and support the potential for us exporting to China and whilst the regulations around getting products into China are complex, we hope to find a sustainable model to enable us to achieve a healthy export business into China’.
Mark Hirschel from HOWND said: ‘China's pet industry is growing and evolving quickly and the trade mission proved to be a valuable experience. Having the opportunity to visit a trade fair, meet with government officials and trade association members, and walk through several free trade zones put things into perspective. With 30% growth year on year, the size of the opportunity is massive but it is important to understand the changes that are being implemented, the time scales involved, and how this affects your own classification of goods. The demand for premium western brands is growing as the younger generation are choosing to have pets before kids and the importance of humanisation, premiumisation, and transparency are becoming more prevalent. Having the right local partner on board is important and I believe that HOWND is well placed to capitalise on this growth’.
Gertjan Willems from Prins Petfoods added: ‘This China trip was an important ‘behind the scenes’ opportunity to see the future China pet market. We hope to be part of that future where products, services and above all education will improve wellness of pets and their owners’.
Nigel Baker, Pet Industry Federation CEO said: ‘With all the uncertainty surrounding Brexit currently, the Chinese pet market offers PIF member manufacturers a very exciting market to consider trading with. This successful trade mission has undoubtedly opening many doors for the companies who attended and were represented there. The Pet Industry Federation is grateful to its export partner, Best for Pets Supply Chain Co. for the exceptional opportunities they provided for us during our visit and their generosity. It is important to seize on the momentum that this trip has generated and continue to grow a sustainable avenue for UK pet products to access this increasingly important pet market and PIF is committed to overseeing that process and supporting its members on that journey.’
Further information about the Chinese export market and PIF membership can be obtained from PIF by emailing info@petfederation.co.uk or by telephoning 01234 273933.

Animal OBEs awarded to police dogs in terror attacks
Nineteen heroic Police Dogs who supported emergency services during the London terror attacks at Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Borough Market have been honoured for their service by leading vet charity, PDSA...
Nineteen heroic Police Dogs who supported emergency services during the London terror attacks at Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Borough Market have been honoured for their service by leading vet charity, PDSA.
Seven of the dogs were selected to represent the Metropolitan Police (Met) and British Transport Police (BTP) animals who served during the 2017 attacks. Today they received the PDSA Order of Merit*– the animal equivalent of the OBE.
The dogs and handlers gathered at the Honorable Artillery Company, London today as Met Police Dogs Kai, Delta and Dave joined BTP Dogs Bruno, Marci, Jax and Bobby** to formally receive their Medals.
Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin, said: “It is with great pride that we honoured these incredible Police Dogs with PDSA Medals today.
“Their awards follow two truly horrific events which tragically claimed thirteen innocent lives and where many more individuals were injured. Amid the chaos, it fell to the dogs from the Metropolitan and British Transport Police to clear the locations of further danger.
“Their actions kept the public safe and allowed the emergency services to carry out their vital work. These are truly deserving recipients of the PDSA Order of Merit. It is an honour to recognise their devotion to duty and service to society.”
Westminster Bridge - Wednesday 22 March 2017
In March 2017, Central London was hit by a terrorist attack that, in just 82 seconds, left five people dead, including a police officer, and 29 injured.
In the moments following the attack, the BTP Explosive Search Dog Section and the Met Police Explosive Detection Dog Team were rushed to the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety.
BTP Dogs Ollie, Oscar, Bruno and Scooby searched through the chaos for potential devices that could cause further harm on the bridge itself and around Parliament Square.
They were joined at the scene by Met Police Dogs Kai and Bruce and their handlers. They searched the car that had crashed into the wall of the Palace of Westminster, as a precautionary measure in case it contained a bomb. Once safe, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services landed in Parliament Square to help injured victims.
Police protocol states that if an object or area has been declared suspicious, all emergency services must withdraw until the scene is confirmed safe. The dogs and handlers put themselves directly in harm’s way to secure the scene, ensure the safety of the public and allow life-saving treatment of the casualties.
London Bridge and Borough Market - Saturday 3 June 2017
In June 2017, a white van containing three attackers drove into ten pedestrians on London Bridge, seriously injuring eight and killing two. The van collided with the railings alongside Barrow Boy and Banker Public House. The attackers alighted from the van armed with knives and appeared to be wearing suicide vests. They ran through Borough Market, continuing their assaults on innocent members of the public. In total, eight people were killed and 48 people were injured during the attack.
BTP General Purpose Dog Teams were called to the scene alongside Firearms Officers to clear the streets, buildings and public areas. Police Dogs Jax, Marci, Johnny, Rocy, Tara and Bobby searched amid a volatile situation for over 13 hours. They worked tirelessly, never faltering in their duty.
Met Police Dogs Alfie, Dave, Poppy and Robson were also deployed to undertake a systematic search of the area. Together with Police Dog Kai (who had only qualified in November 2016 and was relatively inexperienced) they searched a dozen buildings.
Police Dog Delta worked with her handler and a team of Firearms Officers to search over 30 buildings. Her skills, calibre and professionalism saved vital time.
At Borough Market, the Met Dog Teams joined Armed Officers to search for a suspect who was still unaccounted for, despite the unknown risk level to themselves and their dogs.
Meanwhile, Police Dogs Casper and Romeo were tasked with searching the suspects’ suicide vests for explosives.
Police Dog Casper and his handler were later dispatched to clear a suspect vehicle under a nearby railway bridge that, it was believed, could be harbouring an explosive device. Despite the horrendous surrounding conditions, Casper was able to indicate the vehicle was safe, allowing a visual check inside the vehicle to take place.
Throughout the incident the teams worked with the knowledge that potential further danger remained all around them, but put the safety of the public ahead of their own as they tirelessly continued their work.
British Transport Police Inspector Paul Miles said: “I am immensely proud of our dogs and their handlers, and absolutely thrilled to see their bravery and resilience recognised through this very special award. It is impossible to overstate the courage and dedication show by our dog teams, and all of their colleagues who responded to the tragic events of 2017. They worked through physically and emotionally challenging conditions without second thought, willingly walking into danger and putting the public’s safety before their own. While today is a day of celebration, the horror of these incidents will never leave us and our thoughts will always remain with those who lost their lives and were injured.”
Chief Inspector Graham Horwood from the Met’s Taskforce said: “It is a huge honour for our heroic police dogs to be awarded with such a prestigious medal.
“Our Police Dogs and their handlers work day and night, in some of the most challenging environments, to help keep London safe and we are immensely proud that their exceptional work has been recognised.
“Our thoughts and condolences remain with those affected by the awful events that took place in 2017.”
The Met and BTP Dogs will take the total number of PDSA Order of Merit recipients to 28, including 18 dogs and 10 horses. For more information on the recipients visit www.pdsa.org.uk/policedogs.
The PDSA Order of Merit, which was instituted in 2014, recognises animals who display outstanding devotion to their owner or wider society, above and beyond normal companionship – and represents an exceptional example of the special relationship that exists between animals and humans. For more information about the previous recipients, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/pdsaorderofmerit.
PDSA’s Animal Awards Programme was instituted in 1943 by the charity’s founder, Maria Dickin. She believed that, if animals were recognised for their heroic actions, it would help to raise their status in society, ensuring they are better treated. The charity continues this legacy today with the world’s leading Animal Awards Programme.

Summers are warming up, temperatures are rising, and as such people are looking for solutions to help keep their dogs comfortable in the heat.
Premium dog gear brand, Ruffwear, believes a happy dog is a dog outside, and no one wants to forego an adventure because it’s too hot.
So, to help prepare your pup for the warmer weather, here’s some advice from Ruffwear to make sure your dog remains a cool canine, even in hot weather.
Spot the Dangers
Dogs regulate their body temperature differently to humans. They don’t use their skin to perspire because of their coat, they do have sweat glands, however, sweating plays a minor role in regulating body temperature. The main way your dog cools down is by panting to circulate the necessary air through its body.
Because of this, when it gets very hot and humid it can become dangerous for a dog. They respond in several ways including conduction (seeking out shade to absorb the coolness), convection (blood vessels dilate to bring hot blood closer to the surface), and evaporation (panting to bring air into their upper respiratory system).
If they struggle to do this, for any number of reasons, they can end up in severe danger, which is why we see the tragic scenario of dogs dying in hot cars.
Ami Sawran, vet at Westpoint Farm Vets, commented “We have to be sensible about keeping our dogs safe in the heat, so make sure to plan in advance. It’s extremely important for dog owners to understand the severity of dogs overheating and recognise the signs in order to prevent this from happening. All dog breeds are vulnerable to the heat, so it’s also vital to be educated in knowing what to do in the instance and what course of action to take.”
With that in mind, and to help you protect your pooch this summer, here’s some advice and some products from Ruffwear.
Wrap Them Up
You might think this sounds counter intuitive to wrap your dog up when it’s hot, but we’re not talking about a nice warm coat. Cooling jackets that use the process of evaporative cooling are a fast and effective way of keeping your dog cool. Ruffwear offers an extensive range of cooling products including; The Swap Cooler, Jet Stream Cooling Vest and the Core Cooler.
By combining a wicking outer layer that facilitates evaporation, a middle layer that holds water for evaporation, and a comfortable inner layer that transfers the cooling effect to your dog. Ruffwear’s range of cooling products are a fantastic way to ensure your canine can still be your companion on the long summer walks. You can also wrap your dog in a wet towel or put a soaked towel down in the shade for them to lay on to help with evaporative cooling.
Keep them hydrated
Dogs need water, and lots of it, especially in the hot weather. Take a bowl with you on every walk like the Quencher Clinch Top or Trail Runner Bowl from Ruffwear to make sure they are getting a good, regular drink.
Try adding ice cubes to the water or making some dog friendly frozen treats for them to get their teeth around.
Protect Their Paws
Hot weather means hot pavements, which can be harmful to paws. Many dogs get injured walking on burning tarmac and scorching hot pavements – imagine trying to walk everywhere in bare feet in the summer - not a nice proposition. Some good advice to follow is the five-second rule, if you can’t hold your hand against the ground for five-seconds it’s probably too hot for your dog.
The best solution in this case, is to get your dog a pair of boots. Ruffwear’s Grip Trex boots are built with a Vibram rubber outsole that provides great traction on any terrain and a breathable mesh upper that provides ventilation and keeps dirt and debris out. Meaning they’ll protect your pups’ feet from getting burnt but won’t cause them to overheat.
Accapi Group Managing Director, Rob Hughes said: “As the hot weather returns and temperatures continue to rise, it’s so important to think about your dog’s safety before heading into the outdoors. There are many dog owners that don’t realise the danger they are putting their beloved pet in when exposing them to high temperatures which is why we’re encouraging all dog owners to think about adequately protecting their four-legged friend before stepping outside.”

Dogs really are a man and woman’s best friend due to the positive effect our beloved pets have on our happiness and wellbeing, according to research released ahead of National Best Friends Day on 8th June.
A study of over 1,000 UK pet owners* commissioned by raw and natural pet food experts Natures Menu, has revealed that almost half of the nation (47%) class their dog as their best friend and more than three quarters (83%) think that having a pet improves their general wellbeing.
Dogs come out on top as the best pet to make us feel the happiest (47%), followed by our feline friends (24%). Pets also pip others to the post for making men feel consistently happy (43%), followed by family (42%) and friends (12%).
The survey also uncovered the nation’s favourite activities to do with their dog:
- Going for a walk (46%)
- Cuddling them (21%)
- Finding new places to explore (10%)
- Playing games with them (10%)
- Watching TV together (9%)
Sian Murthy, a freelance dog trainer from Cwmcarn in Wales, is the owner of Storm who is fed on Natures Menu and has experienced first-hand the impact that owning a dog can have: “I first adopted four-year-old Collie Cross Storm when I was just 15 years old, to help with my confidence issues that had caused me great difficulty when growing up. With Storm also suffering from a lack of self-esteem, we instantly connected and formed a very special bond. Storm has taught me so much, allowing me to make new friends and go on some amazing adventures.
“However, with my confidence growing due to Storm, I realised that he also needed a friend to help build up his. This is where Ellie came in; a three-year-old Whippet Cross.
“When I adopted Ellie, I didn’t realise she was going blind and would eventually need constant care, but Storm stepped in to help. Storm has become Ellie’s guide, allowing her to lean on him as they walk and reassuring her whenever needed.
“Seeing the impact that Ellie and Storm have on each other’s lives, I couldn’t help but adopt a third dog, with Jetstream being the final addition to my terrific trio. Jetstream’s unfortunate start to life made him incredibly fearful, but with a little help from his friends, his confidence is growing.
“Storm, Jetstream and Ellie have not only helped me become the person I am, the fantastic trio have also grown in confidence with the help of each other. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them and would most definitely say they are the best of friends and my greatest friends too.”
Melanie Sainsbury, Veterinary Education Manager at Natures Menu, said: “Due to their loving nature and adorable enthusiasm, it’s no wonder most Brits class their dog as their best friend. However, not only does owning a pet mean that you get to spend time with your best friend every day, it is also proven that pets improve our mental wellbeing too.
“This National Best Friends Day we ask that owners take extra care of their precious pooches by providing them with a nutritional and complete diet with Natures Menu.”
*Research by The Leadership Factor conducted in July 2018 with 1,006 UK pet owners and in March 2018 with 1,001 UK pet owners.

Pets at Home has revealed it will consider further stockpiling of products ahead of the new Brexit deadline if a no-deal were to remain on the cards.
Chief executive Peter Pritchard said the retail chain had already run down the £4m of stock they stockpiled ahead of the original March 29 exit date.
“We will always protect customer availability. Our focus is on making sure our customers can buy the things they want,” he said.
Pets at Home previously warned that 17% of their products come from outside the UK and stock supplies may be disrupted in the event of a no-deal Brexit over delays at ports and borders.
Pritchard said the company has been protected from some Brexit uncertainties that are hitting other businesses.
“Pets are part of the family and we can see even through these challenging times that people continue to spend on their pet.”

Naturediet leads the way in eco-friendly packaging
Naturediet are proud to challenge change, having led the way in packaging over their 40-year history. The company made the decision to invest in an innovative new production line which enables them to produce in eco-conscious and environmentally friendly packaging.
In a recent survey, nearly 90% of Naturediet customers said that they would be happy to recommend the brand to a friend.
In September 2018, Naturediet launched Feel Good, their revamped range of wet dog food and are the first UK dog food manufacturer to specialise in sustainable Tetra Pak cartons for packaging their full range of wet food and treats.
Naturediet are proud to challenge change having led the way in packaging over their 40 year history, being the first wet dog food manufacturer to use the plastic tray when the company started in 1976.
Having listened to customer feedback on the use of these trays, and being aware of the growing global concern for recyclability, the company made the decision to invest in an innovative new production line which enables them to produce in eco-conscious and environmentally friendly packaging.
Whilst some of the company's existing customers have been vocal about the functionality of the new packaging, the increase in new consumers to the brand, and the feedback from other long standing customers speaks volumes about the current consumer consciousness with regards to plastic pollution.
Here are some comments from consumers:
- "...the new packaging is amazing and recycling is so much easier than the old plastic cartons ~ Well done Naturediet & congrats!!"
- "The new packaging is fab. easy to open and store... Please keep the new packs."
- "New pack a vast improvement."
- "...love being able to reduce plastic use with your new packaging."
Naturediet are proud of their mission to ditch the use of single-use plastic, and their move to become a more environmentally friendly business. The company's 100% British made, natural wet dog food is made on site in their Norfolk based factory with ingredients sourced as locally as possible.
Despite some initial confusion over the new packaging being recyclable due to its mixed materials, Naturediet are working with Tetra Pak to educate consumers on how the packaging manufacturer reforms their packaging at the Tetra Pak dedicated recycling plant in Halifax.
Tetra Pak cartons are a great alternative to plastic trays, pouches and cans. The cartons are made of 6 layers that include FSC certified paperboard and aluminium which are protected by 4 layers of polymer and 92% of councils are now able to collect the cartons to begin their journey to be recycled.
The paper fibres, once pulped, are separated from the polymers and aluminium and the pulp goes on to create new recycled paper products such as the inner tube of toilet roll.
The polymers and aluminium are extracted and are then used to make a variety of new products such as; Green Roof sheets, bins and school desks.
You can read more about Tetra Pak recycling here: http://www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/
Naturediet is available direct, or exclusively via Bestpets in the UK, and Glenkrag in Ireland. For more information on the company, please visit https://www.naturediet.co.uk/
