A Manchester pet and aquatic store with the distinctive name of Gay-Lyfe is to close after being in business for more than 50 years with the internet and changing shopping habits being blamed for the move.

 

"Things have changed over the years,” owner Mark Bootes told the Manchester Eveing News. “Kids used to have pets and now they have iPads. A lot of people in the area don't keep pets any more. That’s one of the reasons why we’re closing.”

 

The pet and aquatic store in Levenshulme was first opened by George and Norma Ormrod in 1965 before their nephew, Mark Bootes, joined the business in 1980.

 

It sold animals of all shapes and sizes, but it was tropical fish where Mark carved out a niche for the business.

 

"When we announced we were closing on Facebook, a lot of people said ‘oh I used to go there’. But that’s exactly it, people used to come to us but now they go elsewhere or buy online.”

 

Though the shop is closing Mark will continue to import tropical fish from around the world with his colleague, James Best.

Yorkshire pet treat manufacturer The Innocent Pet has launched the UK’s first luxury birthday cake mix for dogs – so they can celebrate their big day too!


Founder Chloe Heaton said: “Every time we have a birthday in our family, our lurcher Bongo – the inspiration behind our business - always manages to steal a piece of the cake.  We thought it was about time we made him a cake of his own…but one that contained meat!”


Mum of two, Chloe, who runs the family business with her husband, Justin, at their factory in Wetherby, said: “It is easy to make - simply add eggs and water to the mix which contains air-dried British duck and a grain-free flour and fruit blend.  The mix can be turned into a large birthday cake or several cupcakes in less than half an hour – bakers can have their own Great Birthday Bark Off and decorate their bakes with an array of toppings such as cream cheese, peanut butter and treats. It is so simple and fun - even children can enjoy getting involved.”


The kit consists of 2 sachets: one with air-dried British duck and herb pieces (the duck has been carefully sourced from Red Tractor farms, and gently air-dried for up to 4 days to maintain nutrients and flavour).  The second sachet contains grain free flours, gluten free baking powder and a blend of cranberry, apple and nettle.


Chloe said: “With no added sugar or grains not only do dogs thoroughly enjoy this recipe, but it is a healthy alternative to other birthday cakes.  You could say that dogs really can have their cake and eat it - especially because they have the equivalent of 7 birthdays each year!”


Dogs are very much seen as being part of the family and people love to involve them in celebrations.  A recent survey showed that 75% of dog owners celebrate their dog’s birthday.


They’re inviting customers to share their doggy birthday cake pictures on social media using #birthdaybarkoff.


As well as the Birthday Cake Mix, The Innocent Pet produces a range of air-dried British meat treats and food for dogs and cats and also caters for small animals.

Pet food manufacturer CSJ has revealed its sales to Europe of natural canine feeds, herbal supplements and treats are continuing to strengthen despite all the uncertainty caused by Brexit.

Supreme Petfoods repeats award success

Supreme Petfoods has doubled up on last year’s success in the Pet Product Marketing Retailer Recommended Awards. Retailers chose the company’s flagship product Supreme Science Selective as the winner in the Small Animal Product of the Year, for the second year running. The company also once again scooped the Innovation of the Year – a category which spans all pet sectors – this time with its Tiny Friends Farm Eco Bedding.

Tiny Friends Farm Eco Bedding, which launched in the spring of 2018, landed at a time when caring for the planet was becoming higher on most people’s agenda. It’s emerged as an increasingly important trend this year with pet owners actively seeking out green and sustainable products.

Natures Menu has invested almost half a million pounds in installing more than 1,500 solar panels at its factory in Norfolk. The solar technology, installed by East Anglia based RenEnergy, marks the company’s commitment to renewable solutions.

The solar technology, installed by East Anglia based RenEnergy, marks the company’s commitment to renewable solutions. Over 1,500 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the state-of-the-art factory in Snetterton.

 

The installation is set to create almost a fifth of the building’s total annual energy consumption and will contribute to powering its factory floor and equipment, as well as its impressive offices which house over 200 members of staff.

 

Solar panel benefits include a reduced impact on the environment as well as cost-saving on electricity bills.

The countdown to Bring Your Dog To Work Day on Friday, June 21st, has well and truly started, as the nation's pet lovers plan to take their furry friends to their place of work...


 

Now in its sixth year there is no doubt that Bring Your Dog To Work Day on Friday, June 21st. has captured the imagination of our dog loving nation.

 

It has become a highlight in the UK calendar - people love taking their best friend to work with them, it's great fun and there are some seriously positive mental health benefits of having four-legged co-workers at work. 

 

Celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Lorraine Kelly, and many more including dog lover Peter Egan all promote the event through their twitter feeds.  Top media outlets, like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and broadcasters have dogs on their radio and TV programmes and also tweet about it. The hashtag #BringYourDogToWork always trends at number one and last year reached millions of users. 

 

Even the Disney company made a special animated tweet of all the famous Disney Dogs.

 

Bring Your Dog To Work Day is raising money this year for two animal welfare charities: All Dogs Matter and Animals Asia. Official event sponsors can also choose to raise funds for their own animal welfare charities.  Bring Your Dog To Work Day was founded by multi-award winning pet care brand HOWND and has raised thousands of pounds for animal welfare charities over the past five years.

 

In return for a business making a minimum £100 donation, its company logo and website link will be displayed on the homepage, and it will receive a thank you shout out on social media from the organisers and the two charities.  The organisers will share all Bring Your Dog To Work Day official sponsors in-house fundraising events, competitions and activities in its social feeds.  All companies have to do is use the hashtag #Bringyourdogtoworkday.

PIF holds trade mission to China for its members

 

Three Pet Industry Federation (PIF) member companies visited China in May as part of a trade mission to launch their products to the Chinese market, in a trip hosted by PIF and its Chinese export partner, Best for Pets Supply Chain Co., Ltd...


 

Three Pet Industry Federation (PIF) member companies visited China in May as part of a trade mission to launch their products to the Chinese market, in a trip hosted by PIF and its Chinese export partner, Best for Pets Supply Chain Co., Ltd.

 

HOWND, Broadreach Nature and Prins Petfoods joined the trade mission, which centred around the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Expo in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. Their products were on display at the show , along with those from Natures Menu, the Big Biscuit Company and Woof & Brew, who were unable to join the trip but keen to be included. The Expo was took place over five days, attracting both public and trade, with estimates of 300,000 visitors attending over the course of the event.

 

The visit attracted a great deal of media interest in the UK visitors and their products, with members taking part in numerous media interviews at the event. Best for Pets Supply Chain Co. had also secured visits to the trade stand from the provincial mayor and other local dignitaries, which were complemented by evening banquets to enable networking between the UK companies and local officials. The successful trip also included external visits to the free trade zones in Fuzhou and on the island of Pintan, to enable UK companies to gain a greater understanding of how their products are received into China, clear customs and are then distributed to consumers. 

 

Anne Wood, MD of Broadreach Nature said: ‘Being able to see first-hand the Silk Maritime event was fantastic, as were the opportunities provided by the overwhelming media interest from television and other media companies. PIF’s export partners have very valuable government contacts to underpin and support the potential for us exporting to China and whilst the regulations around getting products into China are complex, we hope to find a sustainable model to enable us to achieve a healthy export business into China’.

Wilsons Pet Food, a Perthshire-based pet food company that can trace its heritage back well over a hundred years, has appointed Dan Griffin as Head of Sales...


Wilsons Pet Food, a Perthshire-based pet food company that can trace its heritage back well over a hundred years, has appointed Dan Griffin as Head of Sales.

 

In the short time that Dan has been with Wilsons Pet Food he has already established 40 new stockists right across the country helping to popularise their growing range of cold press dry food for dogs.

 

He will also be helping to promote an expanded range of new products designed to cater for an ever-demanding consumer which will be announced in the coming months.

 

Having grown up with dogs on a family farm just outside Stamford, Dan already has a passion for the pet market. He has a background in working for start-up businesses taking new products to market and has worked in the food industry and the commercial side of FMCG where he executed the sales strategy delivering products into both independent shops and large retail chains.

 

His new role at Wilsons will involve establishing the commercial and sales strategy and building relationships with existing and new retailers, with a focus on independent stores.  

 

He will be working alongside Craig Wallace, the Managing Director of Wilsons Pet Food to grow and expand the business, while increasing brand awareness.

Nineteen heroic Police Dogs who supported emergency services during the London terror attacks at Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Borough Market have been honoured for their service by leading vet charity, PDSA.

 

Seven of the dogs were selected to represent the Metropolitan Police (Met) and British Transport Police (BTP) animals who served during the 2017 attacks. Today they received the PDSA Order of Merit*– the animal equivalent of the OBE.  

 

The dogs and handlers gathered at the Honorable Artillery Company, London today as Met Police Dogs Kai, Delta and Dave joined BTP Dogs Bruno, Marci, Jax and Bobby** to formally receive their Medals.  

 

Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin, said: “It is with great pride that we honoured these incredible Police Dogs with PDSA Medals today. 

 

“Their awards follow two truly horrific events which tragically claimed thirteen innocent lives and where many more individuals were injured.  Amid the chaos, it fell to the dogs from the Metropolitan and British Transport Police to clear the locations of further danger.

 

“Their actions kept the public safe and allowed the emergency services to carry out their vital work.  These are truly deserving recipients of the PDSA Order of Merit. It is an honour to recognise their devotion to duty and service to society.”

 

Westminster Bridge - Wednesday 22 March 2017

In March 2017, Central London was hit by a terrorist attack that, in just 82 seconds, left five people dead, including a police officer, and 29 injured. 

 

In the moments following the attack, the BTP Explosive Search Dog Section and the Met Police Explosive Detection Dog Team were rushed to the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

 

BTP Dogs Ollie, Oscar, Bruno and Scooby searched through the chaos for potential devices that could cause further harm on the bridge itself and around Parliament Square. 

 

They were joined at the scene by Met Police Dogs Kai and Bruce and their handlers.  They searched the car that had crashed into the wall of the Palace of Westminster, as a precautionary measure in case it contained a bomb.  Once safe, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services landed in Parliament Square to help injured victims.

 

Police protocol states that if an object or area has been declared suspicious, all emergency services must withdraw until the scene is confirmed safe. The dogs and handlers put themselves directly in harm’s way to secure the scene, ensure the safety of the public and allow life-saving treatment of the casualties.

 

London Bridge and Borough Market - Saturday 3 June 2017

In June 2017, a white van containing three attackers drove into ten pedestrians on London Bridge, seriously injuring eight and killing two. The van collided with the railings alongside Barrow Boy and Banker Public House. The attackers alighted from the van armed with knives and appeared to be wearing suicide vests. They ran through Borough Market, continuing their assaults on innocent members of the public. In total, eight people were killed and 48 people were injured during the attack.

 

BTP General Purpose Dog Teams were called to the scene alongside Firearms Officers to clear the streets, buildings and public areas. Police Dogs Jax, Marci, Johnny, Rocy, Tara and Bobby searched amid a volatile situation for over 13 hours. They worked tirelessly, never faltering in their duty.

 

Met Police Dogs Alfie, Dave, Poppy and Robson were also deployed to undertake a systematic search of the area.  Together with Police Dog Kai (who had only qualified in November 2016 and was relatively inexperienced) they searched a dozen buildings.  

 

Police Dog Delta worked with her handler and a team of Firearms Officers to search over 30 buildings. Her skills, calibre and professionalism saved vital time.

 

At Borough Market, the Met Dog Teams joined Armed Officers to search for a suspect who was still unaccounted for, despite the unknown risk level to themselves and their dogs.  

 

Meanwhile, Police Dogs Casper and Romeo were tasked with searching the suspects’ suicide vests for explosives.

 

Police Dog Casper and his handler were later dispatched to clear a suspect vehicle under a nearby railway bridge that, it was believed, could be harbouring an explosive device.  Despite the horrendous surrounding conditions, Casper was able to indicate the vehicle was safe, allowing a visual check inside the vehicle to take place.  

 

Throughout the incident the teams worked with the knowledge that potential further danger remained all around them, but put the safety of the public ahead of their own as they tirelessly continued their work. 

 

British Transport Police Inspector Paul Miles said: “I am immensely proud of our dogs and their handlers, and absolutely thrilled to see their bravery and resilience recognised through this very special award. It is impossible to overstate the courage and dedication show by our dog teams, and all of their colleagues who responded to the tragic events of 2017. They worked through physically and emotionally challenging conditions without second thought, willingly walking into danger and putting the public’s safety before their own. While today is a day of celebration, the horror of these incidents will never leave us and our thoughts will always remain with those who lost their lives and were injured.”

 

Chief Inspector Graham Horwood from the Met’s Taskforce said: “It is a huge honour for our heroic police dogs to be awarded with such a prestigious medal.

 

“Our Police Dogs and their handlers work day and night, in some of the most challenging environments, to help keep London safe and we are immensely proud that their exceptional work has been recognised.

 

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with those affected by the awful events that took place in 2017.”

Summers are warming up, temperatures are rising, and as such people are looking for solutions to help keep their dogs comfortable in the heat.

 

Premium dog gear brand, Ruffwear, believes a happy dog is a dog outside, and no one wants to forego an adventure because it’s too hot.

 

So, to help prepare your pup for the warmer weather, here’s some advice from Ruffwear to make sure your dog remains a cool canine, even in hot weather.

 

Spot the Dangers

Dogs regulate their body temperature differently to humans. They don’t use their skin to perspire because of their coat, they do have sweat glands, however, sweating plays a minor role in regulating body temperature. The main way your dog cools down is by panting to circulate the necessary air through its body.

 

Because of this, when it gets very hot and humid it can become dangerous for a dog. They respond in several ways including conduction (seeking out shade to absorb the coolness), convection (blood vessels dilate to bring hot blood closer to the surface), and evaporation (panting to bring air into their upper respiratory system).

 

If they struggle to do this, for any number of reasons, they can end up in severe danger, which is why we see the tragic scenario of dogs dying in hot cars.

 

Ami Sawran, vet at Westpoint Farm Vets, commented “We have to be sensible about keeping our dogs safe in the heat, so make sure to plan in advance. It’s extremely important for dog owners to understand the severity of dogs overheating and recognise the signs in order to prevent this from happening. All dog breeds are vulnerable to the heat, so it’s also vital to be educated in knowing what to do in the instance and what course of action to take.”

 

With that in mind, and to help you protect your pooch this summer, here’s some advice and some products from Ruffwear.

 

Wrap Them Up

You might think this sounds counter intuitive to wrap your dog up when it’s hot, but we’re not talking about a nice warm coat. Cooling jackets that use the process of evaporative cooling are a fast and effective way of keeping your dog cool. Some good advice to follow is the five-second rule, if you can’t hold your hand against the ground for five-seconds it’s probably too hot for your dog.

Dogs really are a man and woman’s best friend due to the positive effect our beloved pets have on our happiness and wellbeing, according to research released ahead of National Best Friends Day on 8th June.

 

A study of over 1,000 UK pet owners* commissioned by raw and natural pet food experts Natures Menu, has revealed that almost half of the nation (47%) class their dog as their best friend and more than three quarters (83%) think that having a pet improves their general wellbeing.

 

Dogs come out on top as the best pet to make us feel the happiest (47%), followed by our feline friends (24%). Pets also pip others to the post for making men feel consistently happy (43%), followed by family (42%) and friends (12%).

 

The survey also uncovered the nation’s favourite activities to do with their dog:

  • Going for a walk (46%)
  • Cuddling them (21%)
  • Finding new places to explore (10%)
  • Playing games with them (10%)
  • Watching TV together (9%)

Supermarket chain Aldi has apologised to a dog owner who claimed she found shards of plastic in one of their treats.

 

The dog owner posted images on Facebook which appeared to show small pieces of blue plastic embedded in the bone-shaped biscuits.

 

Nicola McMahon wrote on Facebook: “If anyone buys their dog treats from Aldi UK be aware I’ve come across blue plastic and jaggy plastic in their Bisky Bones today.

 

“Glad I noticed it before I gave them to Winston. Also checked the ingredients and it definitely doesn’t say plastic

 

An Aldi spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: “We apologise to Ms McMahon and would encourage her to contact Aldi to return the product so we can further investigate this with our supplier.”

Pets at Home has revealed it will consider further stockpiling of products ahead of the new Brexit deadline if a no-deal were to remain on the cards.

 

Chief executive Peter Pritchard said the retail chain had already run down the £4m of stock they stockpiled ahead of the original March 29 exit date.

 

“We will always protect customer availability. Our focus is on making sure our customers can buy the things they want,” he said.

 

Pets at Home previously warned that 17% of their products come from outside the UK and stock supplies may be disrupted in the event of a no-deal Brexit over delays at ports and borders.

 

Pritchard said the company has been protected from some Brexit uncertainties that are hitting other businesses.

 

“Pets are part of the family and we can see even through these challenging times that people continue to spend on their pet.”

Naturediet leads the way in eco-friendly packaging

Despite some initial confusion over the new packaging being recyclable due to its mixed materials, Naturediet are working with Tetra Pak to educate consumers on how the packaging manufacturer reforms their packaging at the Tetra Pak dedicated recycling plant in Halifax.  

 

Tetra Pak cartons are a great alternative to plastic trays, pouches and cans.  The cartons are made of 6 layers that include FSC certified paperboard and aluminium which are protected by 4 layers of polymer and 92% of councils are now able to collect the cartons to begin their journey to be recycled.   

 

The paper fibres, once pulped, are separated from the polymers and aluminium and the pulp goes on to create new recycled paper products such as the inner tube of toilet roll.

 

The polymers and aluminium are extracted and are then used to make a variety of new products such as; Green Roof sheets, bins and school desks.
