Well-known pet store – Seapets in Essex – has closed suddenly amid concerns over cash and goods owed to customers.

The store at Tollgate, Stanway, had its doors locked up this week with notices in the windows to tell customers of the closure.

One notice stated that no livestock had been left in the building, saying all animals had been rehomed.

However, a number of customers are unhappy with the developments, and have left message on Seapets’ Facebook page, alleging they are owed money or items.

Adam Bateson wrote: “Scammed again....paid out £45 online for equipment from Seapets. Payment went out of account, no items delivered and suddenly the company ceases to exist...wonderful.”

Andrew Ingram said: “They wouldn’t honour a two-year guarantee on a £1,000 pound fish tank, disgusting.”

And Bobbie Aburrow commented: “They owe me £40 on an order they did not deliver. Any ideas please how I can get my money back?”

Another post claimed that Pets at Home were moving into the premises.

The local Colchester Council said its Environmental Health team carried out a recent visit of Seapets, to carry out a routine inspection of the premises.

Seapets’ website www.seapets.co.uk has not been operating this week and its phone line is not being answered.

The business is owned by Jerry and Pauline Arnold. According to records at Companies House, their daughter Tamsin Hegarty resigned from the business in March. The records also state that the company accounts are overdue.

Record numbers of exhibitors…the biggest ever showcase of new products…scores of show offers and competitions. It all adds up to PATS Telford – the most exciting event in the pet industry for years.

Final preparations are being made as the eagerly awaited exhibition gets set to open its doors at Telford International Centre at 9am on Sunday, September 25th.

The excitement has been building for months with almost 200 exhibitors planning their new launches around PATS Telford.

Now the wait is almost over for both exhibitors and visitors…and the two-day show can soon begin.

“There is a tremendous buzz surrounding the show,” says organiser Annie Foord. “So much is happening at PATS Telford over both days of the exhibition, it really is a must-visit event for retailers and buyers. You won’t be disappointed.

“All the latest new product launches will be unveiled as well as great talks from some of the industry’s most respected names and demonstrations from the country’s top groomers.

“I can promise it will be great day out so make sure you travel to Telford and attend the biggest pet trade show for years.”

With so many exciting plans it could easily be a record-breaking year for attendance numbers as well.

On arrival at Telford International Centre, a large majority of visitors will head for the New Product Showcase, which will have a huge presence at the exhibition. All entries in the Showcase will be judged by a panel of retailer judges for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, and the results will be known and highlighted throughout the exhibition hall for the rest of the event.

As well as seeing an unrivalled array of new pet products and speaking to top suppliers and manufacturers, visitors will also be able to witness demonstrations from the country’s leading dog groomers and listen to talks from prominent industry figures.

Gabrielle Imerson, Director of Woof Dog Beer Ltd, summed up the feeling of the exhibitors. “We are excited to be exhibiting at PATS this year,” she said. “It will be the most important event we will have attended since launching last year. We are looking forward to meeting and talking to both national and international companies interested in purchasing our unique product.”

And Jessamine Kellett, of Dodson & Horrell, said: “We are looking forward to returning to PATS as it is a great opportunity for the team to meet customers both old and new.”

All visitors to PATS Telford will receive a free catalogue, free tea and coffee, and free parking, and you can register online for free entry at the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk.

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website together with information on how to reach both venues and regularly updated show news.

98% of vets asked to euthanise healthy pets
Almost all companion animal vets have been asked to euthanise healthy pets, according to figures released by the British Veterinary Association. BVA President Sean Wensley said: “These figures are stark."
Almost all companion animal vets have been asked to euthanise healthy pets, with half (53%) saying this was not a rare occurrence and 98% of those who had been asked to euthanise a healthy pet citing the owner’s reason as their pet’s behaviour, reveal figures released today by the British Veterinary Association (BVA).

Problem behaviours vets can see include persistent barking and howling, destructive chewing and inappropriate toileting. Aggressive behaviour, towards both people and other pets, is also a problem, with the PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report revealing that a third of pet owners have been attacked or bitten by a dog. Such behaviours can cause a breakdown of the human-animal bond, leading to pets being excluded from family life to the detriment of their welfare, relinquished to rehoming centres or euthanised.

The figures, obtained during BVA’s Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey, which polled over 700 vets across the UK, also highlight the burden that is placed on vets every day when they are faced with euthanising healthy animals.

BVA says that these figures overwhelmingly show the importance of adequate socialisation of animals at an early age – young animals should safely encounter a variety of people, animals and everyday household sights and sounds in their first few weeks and months of age, beginning at the place where they are born. Many veterinary practices now offer puppy socialisation classes to help with this.

British Veterinary Association President Sean Wensley said: “These figures are stark and are likely to come as a shock to members of the public. But this is the sad reality of a failure to socialise animals from the earliest possible age – a specific time in a puppy’s development which has a significant impact on their future temperament and behaviour.

"With dogs, this process starts from before a puppy is even seen by a potential owner. In recent months there has been a litany of news stories about the illegal importation, breeding and trading of puppies through puppy farms.

"This is no way for a family pet to start life and we urge potential owners to thoroughly research where a puppy has been born and reared, using the AWF/RSPCA Puppy contract to help. Then, in the first year of ownership, and especially in the first few weeks, work with your local veterinary practice to ensure your puppy is introduced to everyday sights and sounds, including other people and animals, in a safe and structured way.”

Mr Wensley also commented on the impact on vets: “Nobody enters the veterinary profession wanting to euthanise healthy pets, but this is the stressful situation that many vets are facing because of undesirable behaviours in pet animals.

"Vets will do all they can in these situations to avoid euthanasia, including offering evidence-based behavioural advice, referring to accredited pet behaviourists or assisting with rehoming through reputable rehoming organisations, but sometimes these options are not appropriate, particularly where the behavioural issues make it extremely difficult to rehome the animal.

"Vets are not required to euthanise healthy animals at an owner’s request, but sometimes, having carefully considered all options and given the circumstances the pet finds themselves in, it may be in an animal’s best interests to do so. Euthanising an animal who could have been a loving pet is the hidden, tragic cost of poor socialisation.”

Owners often offered a number of reasons when requesting euthanasia for their healthy pet, with surveyed vets saying that some of the most common reasons they were given included poor health of the owner (48%), owners moving to accommodation that is unsuitable for their pet (39%), and legal enforcement reasons (32%).

Coventry pet shop to close after nearly half-a-century of trading
Family-run pet shop Hobdays in Coventry will open for the last time today with a half-price sale. The closure has been blamed on rising rental charges...
Family-run pet shop Hobdays in Coventry will open for the last time today with a half-price sale. The closure has been blamed on rising rental charges.

Andrew Hobday, 59, who took over the running of the shop with his brother Tim after their father, Peter, was taken ill, said: “We are one of the oldest shops on the hill and well known around the city.

“We took it over from my dad when he fell ill.

“We have been winding down for a while, and it’s been really sad to see everything gradually go.”

The closure will also mark the end of 80 years of the Hobday family trading at Ball Hill.

Andrew and Peter’s grandparents had a corner shop there nearly 80 years ago.

The shop, that was once jam-packed and buzzing with children after they finished school just round the corner and popped in to see the animals, now looks deserted.

Andrew added: “The shop is virtually empty now and in the last week we will be slashing prices to get rid of the stock.

“I am upset, it will be a sad day for us all as it has been in the family for so many years.”

The reason for its closure is that the freehold on the building has been sold and the family can no longer rent the property.

BDGA calls on pet groomers to complete survey on City & Guilds qualification
The British Dog Groomers’ Association (BDGA) is calling on dog groomers who have done their City & Guilds 7763 Level 3 Introductory Certificate to complete a short survey about whether or not they would like to complete the full City & Guilds 7763 Level 3 Diploma...
The British Dog Groomers’ Association (BDGA) is calling on dog groomers who have done their City & Guilds 7763 Level 3 Introductory Certificate to complete a short survey about whether or not they would like to complete the full City & Guilds 7763 Level 3 Diploma.

With the current City & Guilds Level 3 7763 being replaced with the new 7863 Diploma in Dog Grooming, the BDGA is concerned that there may be groomers who have only undertaken the 7763 Introductory Certificate and can't find a location to do the second part i.e. the Level 3 Diploma exam.

This BDGA survey aims to determine whether there are groomers who want to undertake the Diploma and to find out where they are located, so that BDGA can find suitable centres to hold the practical Diploma exams.

Groomers don’t need to have taken their 7763 Introductory Certificate with PIF/ BDGA to answer the survey; nor do they have to be BDGA members. The BDGA simply wants to get as many groomers fully qualified to Diploma level, before the opportunity of re-registration for the 7763 closes next year. This survey to ascertain demand and most suitable locations is a vital first step to helping pet groomers complete their City & Guilds 7763 qualification journey.

Completing the survey takes just a couple of minutes. Please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3Y7HQ3S

The deadline for completing this survey is 1 October 2016.

To find out more about pet grooming education and exams please visit www.petfederation.co.uk or call our customer service team on 01234 273933.

Don’t let pets get fired up this fireworks season
Recent research into firework fears and noise sensitivities by Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of ADAPTIL and FELIWAY, has revealed that over three-quarters of pet owners believe that their pets are frightened of fireworks, with nearly 90% of owners worried about how their pet would cope during the firework season...

Recent research into firework fears and noise sensitivities by Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of ADAPTIL and FELIWAY, has revealed that over three-quarters of pet owners believe that their pets are frightened of fireworks, with nearly 90% of owners worried about how their pet would cope during the firework season.

Indeed, over 80% of those questioned stated that their pet’s anxiety means that they do not enjoy fireworks as much and would change their social life during the firework season to ensure that they do not leave their pet ‘home alone’ while fireworks are going off.

Despite their concerns, however, over a quarter of owners do not make preparations in their household to help prepare their pet for fireworks and over a third of those that do only encourage their pet to sleep in a den or hideaway a few days before the fireworks, which does not leave enough time for a pet to become accustomed to their new living arrangements.

“More than 40% of owners have sought advice on the preparations that can help their pets during the firework season, with nearly 20% seeking help from their pet shop or pet supermarket which is a fantastic opportunity for retailers to provide help and advice on the subject to enhance the retailer/customer bond,” comments Claire Russell, product manager for pheromones at Ceva Animal Health.

“By building a den for a dog and a hideaway for a cat a few weeks in advance, pets will have a safe place to retreat to when fireworks start.  Plugging in an ADAPTIL or FELIWAY CLASSIC diffuser will increase the security and help create a calm environment.  Confining two cats to a household while fireworks are going off may cause inter-cat aggression.  FELIWAY FRIENDS can help reduce conflicts and aggression between housemate cats.”

Ceva has launched a comprehensive new marketing pack to help educate and support customers with noise sensitive pets in the run up to the firework season.  The new pack features leaflets, leaflet holders and posters.

For further information on Ceva’s fireworks campaign please email customerservicesuk@ceva.com.

It is a testament to the programme that practices with a new graduates from previous year’s intake, have been so impressed with the calibre of vets and the advancement of their skills in practice due to the structured support and training provided, that they are taking on a second or third this September.

“We strongly believe that our academy should provide the very best support both in practice through an individual’s clinical coach and personal mentor, as well as providing the very best impartment of knowledge from peers at the top of their specialist fields right from the start of their careers” said Richard Parker, Head of HR at Independent Vetcare. It is because of this belief that Independent Vetcare not only provides training for new graduates on the programme, but also coaching and mentoring training for those that are charged with the clinical development of these new vets in their practice.
