PATS Sandown off to great start despite weather

Pet retailers braved strong winds and heavy rain to ensure that PATS Sandown got off to a successful start as Storm Ciara battered the UK today (February 9). Pet retailers braved strong winds and heavy rain to ensure that PATS Sandown got off to a successful start as Storm Ciara battered the UK today (February 9).

As the country suffered the effects of flooding, disruption to travel and power cuts, the pet industry still turned out in force on the first day of the show.

It is the second year the event has taken place on a Sunday and Monday in February, and despite the unusual weather both exhibitors and visitors gave the exhibition a huge thumbs up.

Carina Evans, of Podium Pet Supplies, summed up the mood of exhibitors when she said: “If people needed proof that PATS Sandown is a not-to-be-missed event then they got it on the opening day. The UK pet industry showed real British Bulldog spirit to make sure it was a success.”

John James, of James & Steel, echoed those comments, saying: “Considering the bad weather, I have been pleasantly surprised with the way things have gone so far. Our stand was very busy as the doors opened.” And Elan Mansur, of Long Paws, added: “To be honest I was a little concerned about the weather affecting attendance but I needn’t have worried. It has been a great start.”

We.pet is an independent pet wholesaler launching at the show and director Robert Frost was delighted with the response from visitors. “We’ve had some very positive feedback and generated some quality leads,” he said.

Another first-time exhibitor, Natural Dog Food Direct, also experienced a good start to the show. The company’s Craig Ewing said: “Already it has been a great experience. There have been times when we’ve been mobbed and there are six of us on the stand, so that’s saying something, especially with it being ‘big coat’ weather outside.”

The first day of the show also got the thumbs-up from visiting retailers.

Andy Sheppard, of Rangebourne Pet Care, Devizes, Wiltshire, said: “I have attended every PATS Sandown and I wouldn’t miss it. I love the venue and I love the show, and the bad weather wouldn’t put me off coming. It has everything I need all under one roof. It’s just brilliant.”

And Diane Snell, who is setting up a pet retail boutique and dog grooming parlour in Dartford, Kent, commented: “I was determined to come despite the weather because this show is perfect for sourcing new products and ideas.”

Billy Matlock, of Anas Pet ‘N’ Tack store, Hindhead, Surrey, agreed: “PATS Sandown is worth visiting for all the new products on display. It’s also a good networking event where retailers and suppliers can share ideas.”

The second day of the show opens at 9.30am on Monday (February 10).

Final day of PATS Sandown tomorrow

The doors for the second and final day of PATS Sandown open tomorrow for visitors at 9.30am and close at 4pm. TO REGISTER CLICK HERE

Royal Canin is adding Indoor Sterilised to its Feline Health Nutrition Wet Range. Available in two formats (morsels in gravy or jelly) Indoor Sterilised will sit alongside the existing Indoor dry products – Indoor, Indoor Appetite Control and Indoor Long Hair. Both new products are totally compatible with the dry range.

Indoor cats have quite specific nutritional needs, often linked to the tendency to gain weight due to a more sedentary lifestyle and increased grooming which can mean an increased tendency to hairballs.

Royal Canin Indoor Sterilised supports the digestive tract with highly digestible proteins and zeolite which helps reduce stool odours. The high moisture content helps maintain a healthy urinary environment, and use of L-carnitine helps to maintain a healthy weight for cats.

Indoor Sterilised in Gravy or Jelly is available for retailers to purchase in packs of 12 x 85g pouches, and will be available to order from early March 2020.

It’s not often a new wholesaler launches into the UK pet food market but that’s exactly what’s happened at PATS Sandown with the launch of We.pet Independent Pet Wholesale.

The company's Dan Vander said: "We.pet are fiercely loyal to the independent pet channel in the UK and will sell only to David not Goliath.  We will never supply internet-only retailers such as Amazon, Ebay or Zooplus nor will you find any of our products in any of the national supermarkets.

"We.pet believe in better value through quality with unique and wholesome products.  Our partners will have the choice of a unique range of high-quality premium dog, cat and wild bird brands that we are distributing exclusively via the Independent Channel in the UK.  Three-quarters of the brands already have established track-records of UK retail sales although the Independent Channel have never had wholesale access to them before.

"We.pet will be a dependable ally to the independent channel of the UK pet trade and PATS Sandown will see the UK wholesale debut of two new food brands as well as the worldwide debut of a completely new cat food brand to support our strategy of providing our partners with highly palatable and desirable, market-leading products that are only available via this channel."

You can find out more about We.pet on stand G2 in Surrey Hall at PATS Sandown 2020, and for more information contact Dan or Robert on 01342 710420.

New for Cats: Highlights of this year’s show will include a completely new cat food range which will offer independents important exclusivity (4.25kg and 15kg bags), striking new packaging and the stamp of quality from DLG Certification which is increasingly appreciated by UK retailers.

Product launches, CPD points and fantastic flea deals available from Beaphar at PATS Sandown

Beaphar UK is starting the new decade with not one but two exciting new product launches, with both products being featured on their stand at PATS Sandown. They've also returned to the seminar stage with a Dental Care presentation worth 4 CPD points for attending or participating SQPs.

Beaphar NutriSupport is a range of unique, soft jelly, nutraceutical health supplements for cats and dogs, they are made with natural active ingredients to support pet well-being.

Dr Sue Huggett, UK Business Manager, Beaphar UK, said: ‘The Beaphar NutriSupport Range is a unique to the UK pet trade, with the soft jelly formula making it not only easier to give to cats and dogs, but more stable than other products. Pet owners and retailers alike can be confident they have a quality product that pets will love and will support their well-being.’

Samples of Beaphar NutriSupport will be available on Beaphar’s stand, F13, along with a full colour trade booklet explaining more about the natural active ingredients. Amongst these ingredients are sea buckthorn and turmeric, both of which have seen a surge in popularity in human healthcare recently for their health benefits.

Alongside the nutraceutical range, the manufacturer will also be adding new products to its successful Beaphar CaniComfort® Calming Range, which was launched in September 2019. But, if you want to find out more, you’ll have to visit the stand itself, as Beaphar are being tight-lipped about this latest development!

‘The new Beaphar CaniComfort® products are an exciting expansion of the existing range, complementing the diffuser and spray. It means we can now support dogs of all ages and breeds through a wider range of stressful situations, whether they are at home or on-the-go,’ teases Dr Huggett. ‘We hope all visitors to the show will pop by to see us and find out more!’

As if the pull of exciting new products wasn’t enough, Beaphar’s Technical Support Executive, Georgina Shrimpton RVN C-SQP, returned to the PATS seminar stage.

Georgina said: ‘One area of our pets’ health that is so commonly overlooked is their oral hygiene. I am often asked if dental sticks actually work and if pet owners should worry about brushing their pet’s teeth. Just as it is with us, keeping our pets teeth clean and healthy is so important, but can be daunting for pet owners, leading many to avoid it.

‘But, with the right information and support, dental care can become a simple part of a pet and owner’s daily routine – the process of introducing dental care can even be a great bonding experience. My seminar will focus on the importance of dental hygiene, dental problems, how to give dental care to pets and Beaphar products that can help achieve this. All this information is broken down so retailers can easily pass it along to their customers. And best of all for SQPs, they can earn 4 CPD points.’

Dr Huggett concluded: ‘With new products, a fascinating and useful seminar, as well as pre-season flea deals which will be available on stand, we really are showcasing the range of products we have to offer pet retailers across the two day event.

‘Our sales team will be on hand throughout the show to answer any questions you may have about our products, marketing support and the training available to help you increase your pet healthcare sales. We look forward to catching up with our existing customers and meeting new retailers at the show.’

New year, new look for Fish4Dogs

Fish4Dogs kicked off the new year with a new look which celebrates its ‘Pioneers of Fish’ credentials and makes its extensive range easier to navigate for customers around the globe...

Fish4Dogs kicked off the new year with a new look which celebrates its ‘Pioneers of Fish’ credentials and makes its extensive range easier to navigate for customers around the globe.

The Finest Complete range will be the first to undergo the transformation – boasting consistent and colour-coded packaging - as part of a wider refresh which will be phased in over coming months.

The company worked with award-winning creative agency WPA Pinfold to create the fresh new look which has been two years in development, informed by research and testing at every stage of the process.

It aims to better showcase the Fish4Dogs range - which has grown extensively since the company was founded 12 years ago - and conveys the benefits of fish as ‘the perfect protein’ to customers and retailers alike.

The design features three dogs at various life stages sitting on a jetty overlooking the sea with key colours used to identify various Finest recipes. In the first phase, it will be applied to Finest dry kibble, wet tinned food, mousse products and treats will follow in the spring.

Some products are being renamed to simplify the range for international markets. For example, Finest Cornish Sardine, will become simply, Finest Sardine. The products themselves will still use the same ethically-sourced stock – premium quality, human grade fish.

In response to customer feedback, Finest Sardine will now also be available in a 12kg bag.

The packaging will include iconography to convey key nutritional benefits. Feeding guidelines have undergone review, the Fish4Dogs logo has been ‘cleaned up’ and supporting typefaces regulated.

Core elements from the existing brand including use of stong, bold colours were used as the starting point for enhancement as an anchor for customer recognition.

A key driver for the project was to ensure that the “packaging design would be as good as the product inside”, said Fish4Dogs’ Head of Marketing, Jo Mulgrew.

Said Jo: “Our brand refresh has been an extensive project, requiring us to look closely across our ranges and consider their best fit in order to make our branding consistent and easier to understand. Innovation has led to the introduction of many products over the years but creation of new lines meant that the brand framework was becoming a little too stretched.

“Fish4Dogs’ growth particularly in respect of international markets, has meant that we had arrived at a natural stopping-off point to review our brand and plan for the future, to ensure that it is in the best suited for the journey ahead.”

Graham Smith, CEO of Fish4Dogs, said that he was delighted by the outcome: “This project has been all-encompassing and included rigorous testing and trials from design concepts and packaging to stacking, transportation and display. Every step of the way, we have considered how the brand would be applied now and in the future and have arrived at a solution that incorporates the company’s heritage and values while putting customers at its heart."

Burgess Pet Care is exhibiting its award-winning Neutered Cat food at PATS Sandown. The focus of the Yorkshire pet food manufacturer’s stand this year reflects the growing interest from retailers in the recently-released Burgess Neutered Cat food, a complete pet food made with a high-protein recipe to meet the specific dietary needs of neutered cats.

Burgess Neutered Cat enjoyed a successful launch late last year, which culminated with a Gold award win in the ‘Food, Treat and Health’ category for cats at the prestigious PetQuip Awards that take place at PATS Telford.

Jonathan Collin, Head of UK sales at Burgess Pet Care said: “This is our first trade show of 2020 and we haven’t exhibited at PATS Sandown for a number of years but thought the show would provide the perfect platform to follow-up on the successful launch of Neutered Cat and our gold award win. We’re really excited to return to Sandown and show retailers why Neutered Cat has been such a hit with cat owners.

“The repeat orders and the general response we’ve had from retailers so far has been resoundingly positive, with several commenting that the accessible price point makes it a ‘no brainer’ addition to their cat range. We can’t wait to catch up with customers old and new and explain the benefits of the range in greater detail, as well as hearing their valuable feedback first-hand."

As well as showcasing their Neutered Cat range, staff at the Burgess stand are on-hand to guide retailers through the key features of the full range of Burgess Pet Care products.

The team is also be available to discuss the free resources on the Burgess website that can be accessed through their Retailer portal, which was created by Burgess to help independent pet retailers grow their sales.

PATS Sandown, the UK’s Spring pet industry exhibition, secured a strong line-up of speakers for two days of seminars designed to give pet retailers ahead-of-the-game ideas on new lines, new approaches and new profit potential.

The talks, sponsored by Pet Product Marketing and produced in association with Pedigree Wholesale, are taking place in the Esher Hall Seminar Theatre of Sandown Park Exhibition Centre on both days of the show.

The free-to-attend series of retailer-focused seminars are covering a wide range of topics including: how to make customer loyalty the driving force of your business; helping cats and dogs to thrive will help your business to thrive; using calendar events in 2020 to drive sales; how to increase footfall by stocking raw foods.

Retail expert Ian Retallick will deliver an enlightening talk on how retailers can dominate the market and smash the competition. The author of ‘David and Goliath, How Independent Retailers Can Take on the Giants and Win’ will share his three-step formula to help you dominate your sector of the market so that when customers think of your kind of products and services they think of you.

There will also be a chance to earn Suitably Qualified People (SQP) points for those people attending an AMTRA-accredited seminar on canine and feline dental hygiene by Beaphar UK.

“One of the easiest ways to discover new ideas that could help boost your business is to attend the free seminars at PATS,” said organiser Gordon Thomas.

“If there’s a subject that catches your eye then make a mental note of the time or write it down in your diary so you don’t miss it.

“Most seminars last half-an-hour so they won’t take up a huge amount of your buying time. Also because of the time limit, there’s a lot of information packed into such a short session and often it’s a good idea to take notes or write down bullet points. Usually, the speaker will take questions at the end of the talk.”

A new competition called ‘Groom-Off Sunday’ has been launched at PATS Sandown, offeingr 16 budding groomers the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes.

Groom-Off Sunday, run in association with expert Mathew Spry and The Welsh Grooming Academy, is aimed at novice groomers or those just starting out in grooming competitions.

The competition was run in two independent sessions on the opening day of PATS Sandown (Sunday 9th February) and the judges focussed on style, balance, sympathy and technicalities.

With a hamper of prizes from top companies HOWND and Aeolus and a trophy for the two group winners, Groom-Off Sunday has become a successful addition to the show.

There is also a full programme of talks and more grooming demonstrations scheduled for the second day of PATS Sandown.

With an increasing number of pet retailers introducing grooming salons into their stores, the PATS programme of talks and demos will provide invaluable insights into this side of the business.

The demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required to complete traditional grooming techniques successfully as well as showing off a few modern and creative ideas.
