Popular independent pet store put up for sale

A popular independent pet store with a turnover of £370,000 has been put up for sale as the owners have decided to retire.

The asking price for Northumbria Pets in Alnwick is £179,995 plus Stock at Valuation.

The business is being marketed by Hilton Smythe Business Advisors, a national firm that assists with the buying and selling of businesses. Its marketing material states:

“Offered for sale is a long-established independent pet supplies business, based in the Northumberland market town of Alnwick, that has been under the meticulous ownership of the current owners since 1992 and is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. Located in a busy trading location, the business sells a comprehensive range of premium pet products, and caters to a wide variety of pets, including dogs, birds, cats, rodents and reptiles.”

The agents added: “The shop aims to bring a friendly face to the pet supplies market, and benefits from both a local loyal customer base and thousands of tourists, attracted by the natural beauty and historical interest of the area. The shop prides itself on providing informed and impartial advice to customers, as well as offering free deliveries to local destinations. Within recent years, the shop has also introduced a premium key-cutting service that has proved popular with the locals.”

Owner Keith Nichols said: “It is with mixed emotions that we announce the sale of Northumbria Pets. We have poured our heart and soul into this business for over three decades, and it has been an absolute privilege to serve our loyal customers and their beloved pets. We are immensely grateful for the trust and support we have received throughout the years.”

Northumbria Pets has been a member of the British Independent Retailers Association for 16 years. Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre expressed his admiration for the pet store and its invaluable contribution to the independent retail sector.

He said: “Northumbria Pets has been a longstanding and esteemed member of Bira, and we are incredibly proud to have had them as part of our association. Their commitment to providing excellent customer service and their passion for the welfare of pets has made a significant impact on their community. We wish the owners all the best in their future endeavours, and we are confident that their legacy will endure.”
