Large independent pet store changes ownership

A large independent, family-run, pet and country store, which has been trading for over 40 years, is now operating under new ownership. CC Moore Pet & Animal Supplies, a well-known store on a Weymouth trading estate, has been renamed Hewlett’s Pet and Country Store following the move.

A large independent, family-run, pet and country store, which has been trading for over 40 years, is now operating under new ownership.

CC Moore Pet & Animal Supplies, a well-known store on a Weymouth trading estate, has been renamed Hewlett’s Pet and Country Store following the move.

Chris Hewlett, who has worked at the store for nearly 25 years and managed it for the past 11, has taken over the business alongside his wife Lauren.

The shop continues to serve the local community from the same trusted location at Granby Court, retaining its full team and welcoming two new members as it enters its next phase of growth.

Hewlett’s Pet and Country Store is building on the strong foundations laid by the previous owners. The expanded offer includes everything from traditional pet supplies and animal feed to exotic pets, equestrian products, compost, plants and other country supplies, making it a one-stop shop for animal lovers and rural households.

Chris Hewlett said: “We’re incredibly proud to be taking the reins of a store that’s been at the heart of the community for so long.  Our priority is listening to customers and continuing to meet their needs – whether that means increasing our product ranges or simply offering helpful advice.”

The Hewlett family are no strangers to local business. Chris’ grandfather ran the popular Hewlett’s fruit and veg business in Weymouth and his delivery lorry was a regular sight around town. Chris continues that tradition of reliable local service, right here at Granby Trading Estate.

CC Moore carp baits will still continue as a separate business based in North Dorset, and Hewlett’s will continue to stock the CC Moore baits.

Mickey Jones, Chief Executive of DJ Property who helped with the change of ownership, said: “CC Moore has been a trusted name on the estate for decades, and it is great to see the business continue with the same capable and experienced team. Chris knows the customers and understands the business inside out. Hewlett’s Pet & Country Store is in a strong position for the future.”

DJ Property has supported businesses at Granby Trading Estate for over 60 years, working closely with tenants as they grow, evolve or adapt.

Attract wild birds with plenty of water, says Honeyfield’s

As the hot summer continues Honeyfield’s resident wild bird expert and head of sales Simon Smethurst is sharing tips for your wild bird-loving customers on how the provision of plenty of water sources, as well as food, should attract even more birds to the garden.

Water is vital for survival but is also critical for feather quality. Regular bathing is essential to all species of bird, especially during the breeding season when parent birds are more likely to foul their feathers with chick faeces and general soiling at the nest site.

“Very few bird feeders also supply fresh water said Simon. “This means your customers must ensure they provide water for them. Birds very quickly learn where water sources are within their territories. Some of these sites are found whilst on their normal feeding routines, and some are learned from following the behaviour of other species. Providing several water sources is a great way of attracting even more wild birds into the garden.”

Different bird species have their own preferences when it comes to taking a drink. Some may be blatant and drink from an open bird bath while others are very secretive and prefer to drink under cover.

Simon suggests providing 4-5 open water sources in the garden and offers the following tips for your customers:

  • Bird bath in open view from the house (Pigeons, Jackdaws, Starlings, Sparrows).
  • Water tray attached to the feeding station (Tits, Finches, Nuthatch).
  • Ceramic flower pot tray on the roof of a shed (attracts the widest variety overall including the local Sparrowhawk).
  • Plastic flower pot trays under bushes and behind the greenhouse (Blackbird, Thrushes, Robin, Dunnock, Wren).
  • Keeping water stations clean and regularly topped up.
  • Baby sterilising fluids are ideal for cleaning bird drinking stations!

“If birds are unable to locate water in neighbouring gardens where they actually might be feeding, they very quickly learn where to find water elsewhere,” said Simon. “The result is that your customers will have more visiting birds. Water is not only the source of life, it also brings in the birds!”

Honeyfield’s offers an exceptional range of wild bird feeds designed to support wildlife throughout the changing seasons. From high-energy sunflower hearts and nutritious seed mixes to suet treats and mealworms, there’s a feed for every species and dietary requirement. The range is competitively priced for consumers to be able to feed the best, while retailers can benefit from good margin structures and introductory stocking incentives.

This annual event brought together like-minded pet specialists for an inspiring experience offering unmatched networking opportunities, behind-the-scenes insights into GA’s industry-leading production, and expert-led sessions focused on the latest developments in pet food.

From the cutting-edge laboratories and the £75 million Ingredients Kitchen to the extrusion plant and packing lines, attendees looked at the meticulous processes behind why GA makes and delivers the world’s finest pet food.

In the evening, guests were treated to a locally sourced fine dining experience, three show-stopping Peptide+-inspired cakes, and an intimate fireside chat with GA’s Founder and Chairman, Roger Bracewell, who shared the personal vision behind GA’s commitment to its Partners.

Day 2 - Expert Insights and International Case Studies:

The second day transitioned into a seminar-style format, diving deep into science, strategy, and partner success stories.

  • GA experts revealed the 4-year journey behind Peptide+, from market insights to the science to formulating the range.
  • Attendees discovered the technical approach involved in producing hydrolysed food with high fresh meat content.
  • Three GA Partners shared their inspiring growth stories from the UK, Ireland, and Italy—sparking fresh ideas for fellow independent pet businesses and offering real world success stories.

Adding further value, Yummypets, an industry-leading pet consumer research company, delivered a powerful session on meeting the needs of today’s pet owners and how independent businesses adapt to stay competitive.

Throughout the event, guests enjoyed surprises like a bespoke teacup and saucer illustrated with the GA Farmhouse and accompanied by a personal message of appreciation, celebrating the unique bond between GA and its Partners.

Overall, the GA Partner Event was a huge success. Roger Bracewell, Chairman of GA Pet Food Partners, said, “I would like to thank everybody who attended the 2025 GA Partner Event. There are celebrations in the air as Henry Bell & Co marks its 200th anniversary. Established in Grantham, Lincolnshire, back in 1825, first as a grain mill, then a supplier of seeds and fertilisers, and a trader of cereals and pulses for local farmers, it has grown to become a market leader in the animal and pet food industry.

With an enviable reputation for its manufacturing expertise and powerful portfolio of brands, Henry Bell has had the same family at the helm for four generations. Today’s managing director, Thomas Lee, is the great-grandson of Rothwell Lee, who bought the business in 1927.

“Sometimes, it’s good to sit back and look how far you’ve come,” said Thomas. “In our case, it’s been two whole centuries of evolution! Growing and thriving in this sector is a remarkable achievement and something we are immensely proud of. We are backed by a knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic team, and have embraced emerging technology and continued to nurture and refine our skills.

“Quality underpins every part of our business. It is the cornerstone of our success and the foundation on which all our products are made. We have hit this major milestone running and we’re as passionate and committed as ever to making a big difference and delivering the very best to our customers.”

Introducing micronisation and state-of-the-art computer systems has seen Henry Bell & Co become a major producer of micronised cereals, pulses, sugar beet and maize for the UK and overseas markets.

In addition to own-label manufacturing capabilities and growing export activity, Henry Bell is recognised as a force to be reckoned with in the wild bird, dried pet food and horse feed sectors. Its popular brands include the Henry Bell Wild Bird Care Collection, which was launched in 2019 with 200 feed and hardware lines, EquiGlo Horse Feeds featuring Quick Soak 10 Minute Beet and Cooked Full Fat Linseed, Mr Johnson’s small animal feeds and Dog Gone Fishin’ natural fish treats, which are made in the company’s factory in Cornwall.

BVA speaks to BBC amid reports of rising vet costs impacting animal welfare

British Veterinary Association Senior Vice President Dr. Anna Judson has been speaking to the BBC this week, talking about the value of vet care and encouraging pet owners not to delay seeing a vet if they have concerns about their animal.

British Veterinary Association Senior Vice President Dr. Anna Judson has been speaking to the BBC this week, talking about the value of vet care and encouraging pet owners not to delay seeing a vet if they have concerns about their animal.

The BBC has been hearing from vets, animal charities and pet owners and is reporting that increasing cost of vet care is having a negative impact on animal welfare, with owners delaying taking their animals to the vets or making the difficult decision to euthanase them. Charities are also saying that cost is affecting their ability to access vet care and that more people are giving up their animals.

It comes after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently announced it is extending the timeline of its investigation into the UK vet services market for household pets citing the need for more time to fully process the extensive response it received to its proposed remedies.

Responding to the BBC story, British Veterinary Association President Dr. Elizabeth Mullineaux said: “The cost of vet care in the UK has increased in recent years due to a variety of reasons. Running a vet practice, delivering highly skilled medical diagnostics and treatments for animals, is costly and fees reflect the prices vet businesses need to charge to remain financially viable and open. Like all businesses, vet practices have been significantly impacted by rising costs which too have impacted fees. In addition, veterinary treatment in the UK has advanced significantly in recent years, with many injuries and illnesses now successfully treated when in the past pet owners would have faced the difficult decision to have their pets euthanased. However, like all advanced medical care, whether human or animal, these treatments come at a cost.

“It’s concerning to hear that some pet owners are putting off seeking preventative care or more urgent medical treatment for their animals, especially as this is likely to prolong suffering and in the long run lead to escalated, more complicated cases that could cost more to treat. If owners are concerned about cost, speak to your vet because they will always prioritise the welfare of the animal in their care and work closely with owners to find treatment plans that work for their circumstances.

“Whilst we understand that rising costs are a concern for animal owners, many of the Competition and Markets Authority’s proposed remedies, particularly around overly complicated standardised price lists and capped medicine costs, could in fact have the unintentional consequence of reducing consumer choice and potentially increasing vet fees, which could in turn negatively impact animal health and welfare. However, we fully agree with the CMA that reform of the outdated Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and the need for regulation of veterinary businesses rather than just individual vets and vet nurses is long overdue, as it’s just not right for individuals to be held accountable for business decisions they may have had no say in.”

BVA’s response to the CMA’s remedies consultation can be found here and our response to the extension of the investigation timetable can be found here.

The Royal Veterinary College and Mayhew join forces to advance animal welfare in shelter medicine

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has announced a new partnership with the animal welfare charity, Mayhew. This partnership will see the two organisations join forces to enhance the health and wellbeing of vulnerable companion animals...

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has announced a new partnership with the animal welfare charity, Mayhew. This partnership will see the two organisations join forces to enhance the health and wellbeing of vulnerable companion animals through the principles of Shelter Medicine – an emerging veterinary medicine field.

This collaboration represents a shared commitment to improving the lives of homeless and at-risk animals, whether they reside in state-of-the-art rehoming facilities or face life on the streets. Through this partnership, the RVC’s Shelter Medicine Programme and Mayhew will provide additional capacity, with the RVC team performing free neutering, at Mayhew’s on-site community vet clinic, for pet owners who otherwise could not afford to neuter their animals.

Shelter Medicine integrates surgical and medical care and has an emphasis on problem solving. Encompassing several areas of veterinary care, it can include disease management, such as preventative healthcare, knowledge of infectious diseases, housing and disinfection; population control, including neutering programmes; behavioural health; and cruelty and forensic investigations.

The RVC’s Shelter Medicine Programme, launched in 2014 and is the UK’s first formal student rotation dedicated to this field. It provides students with the opportunity to work alongside dedicated shelter vets and gain first-hand experience of the challenges and rewards of looking after animals in shelters and providing accessible care. With a team of twelve dedicated shelter medicine veterinarians, the programme currently collaborates with leading charities including Blue Cross, RSPCA and Wood Green and now Mayhew.

Louise Allum, Head of Shelter Medicine at the RVC, said:

“We are excited to announce this new partnership with the Mayhew, a hardworking charity which is passionate about serving the local community. So many animal shelters in London are at, or over capacity, so performing these neutering procedures will be a significant step in reducing the number of unwanted cats and dogs.

“The Mayhew team has been incredibly welcoming and we look forward to continuing this partnership and important work.”

Samantha Aronson, Head of Clinic at Mayhew, said:

“"We are delighted to be working with the RVC in this new partnership, helping to upskill student vets in an incredibly important area of preventative care.

“Demand for Mayhew's preventative services has skyrocketed since the pandemic. Being able to treat both animals that come into our care and support owners who could not otherwise afford to neuter their cats and dogs is a vital step in addressing the sad overcrowding shelters are experiencing. We're so pleased to be working with the RVC team to reach many more dogs and cats that need us."

Retailers welcome digital parking platform

Independent retailers have welcomed the Government's new digital parking platform as a solution to confusing fragmented parking apps, but warned it must not exclude older customers and cash users...

Independent retailers have welcomed the Government's new digital parking platform as a solution to confusing fragmented parking apps, but warned it must not exclude older customers and cash users.

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) - which represents 6000 independent traders and shopkeepers across Britain - says the unified system should help tackle the current confusion caused by multiple different parking apps.

The new National Parking Platform will create a unified system enabling drivers to pay for parking across participating car parks using their preferred app. Run by the British Parking Association, the Government says it will simplify the parking experience, cut confusion, lower the risk of fines and open the market to fairer competition - all at no cost to taxpayers.

"While we support the principle of a single, simplified parking platform, it's vital that cash and contactless payment options remain available. Removing these could disproportionately affect older people, those without smartphones, and others who are digitally excluded - ultimately contributing to reducing footfall in our town centres and high streets," said John Halliday, Marketing Director for Bira.

Bira highlighted that increasingly congested parking locations in village and town centres, as well as high parking charges, remain major concerns for independent retailers. While the app cannot resolve parking charges, anything which makes it easier for people to park is likely to make it easier for them to shop and therefore support retailers with their custom.

However, a key concern for Bira is the reference to "participating car parks" in the Government announcement, which raises questions about the consistency and reach of the scheme. The association fears a postcode lottery where some areas benefit while others are left behind.

"We need clarity on which car parks will actually join this system," Mr Halliday said. "There's no point having a unified platform if it only works in some places."

Bira also stressed that clear, accessible guidance would be essential to help consumers understand and use the new system effectively, particularly given the digital challenges facing many high street shoppers.

The association maintains its long-standing position on what would really boost struggling town centres. Mr Halliday added:  "What consumers really need is more free parking to incentivise visits to our town centres and high streets. While digital innovation is welcomed, it must not come at the cost of accessibility or inclusivity."

Government changes to rental reforms a dog's dinner, says landlords' association

Planned changes to the Renters’ Rights Bill will mean landlords will be required to shoulder the risk of damage to properties by pets...

Planned changes to the Renters’ Rights Bill will mean landlords will be required to shoulder the risk of damage to properties by pets.

Amendments proposed by the Government will reverse plans to enable landlords to require tenants to have suitable insurance to cover potential damage by pets. It comes as the House of Lords prepares to debate the Bill at Report stage next week.

The changes come despite the Housing Secretary having previously argued that enabling landlords to request tenants have insurance would mean “no one is left unfairly out of pocket.”

Whilst landlords will no longer be able to require tenants with pets to have suitable insurance, there will remain a presumption that they will accept tenants with pets, unless there is a good reason not to.  Ultimately it will be for the courts, and the planned Ombudsman for the private rented sector, to rule on these matters.

The NRLA warns this move will make it far harder for tenants with pets to access rental housing.

Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the National Residential Landlords Association, said: “This is a shoddy and outrageous way to make law. Ministers keep talking about how the Bill works for responsible landlords and yet they seem incapable of speaking to those representing them.

“Yet again the Government simply expects responsible landlords to shoulder even greater risks without any consultation about the likely impact.

“It comes on top of plans which allow tenants to build higher levels of rent arrears, expect landlords to shoulder the cost of delays to an already sclerotic courts system, and make it harder for tenants with poor or no credit ratings to demonstrate their ability to sustain a tenancy.

“Whilst the Government might say that they are fighting their corner it is tenants who will lose out as landlords become more risk averse.”

National Pet Shop Day gains pace as sign-ups more than double for 2025

National Pet Shop Day is on track to be even bigger in 2025. Returning on Saturday 12th July, the celebration of independent pet retailers has already struck a chord across the sector, and pet shops are once again preparing to roll out the welcome mats...

With momentum building and more than double the number of retailers already signed up, National Pet Shop Day is on track to be even bigger in 2025. Returning on Saturday 12th July, the celebration of independent pet retailers has already struck a chord across the sector, and pet shops are once again preparing to roll out the welcome mats.

Launched in 2024 by leading pet healthcare manufacturer Johnson’s Veterinary Products, the campaign aims to spotlight the value of independent pet stores, not just as suppliers, but as pet health and wellbeing hubs offering expert advice and meaningful customer care. The campaign is supported by the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and the British Independent Retail Association (Bira), who share a mission to drive more footfall to the high street and champion the businesses behind the counter.

With over 400 shops already registered to take part (more than twice the number at this stage last year) it’s clear that National Pet Shop Day™ has tapped into something powerful. Independent retailers are seizing the opportunity to showcase what makes them special, and customers are responding with enthusiasm.

Last year’s inaugural event set the tone for what National Pet Shop Day is all about –  community spirit, pride in the local high street, and a whole lot of creativity. Across the country, independent pet shops brought their unique flair to the celebrations, turning everyday visits into something memorable and meaningful for customers of all ages.

For example, at Emersons Pet Centre in Felling, nostalgia took centre stage with a striking retro window display crafted from original newspaper clippings from the 1980s. The display not only wowed passers-by but also sparked conversations about the store’s long-standing presence on the high street. Face painting, a children’s petting zone, giveaways and competitions added to the festive atmosphere - and even Cats Protection joined in the fun.

At its stores in Dorset and Berkshire, Marshall’s Pet Food Store went sweet with a counter full of cakes for both two-legged and four-legged visitors. The day’s highlight? Welcoming their oldest and most loyal customer, which was a touching reminder of the role these stores play in the lives of local people and their pets.

Meanwhile, Midland Parrots and Coalville Pet Supplies used the opportunity to invite customers behind the scenes. Visitors could meet rehomed birds and chat with a local dog trainer who was on hand offering free behavioural advice. Discounts on Johnson’s products, live pet portraits from a local artist, and pet-themed quizzes kept everyone entertained, with plenty of reasons to linger.

And over in Olney, Pickles Pet Pantry held a ‘Pickles Party’ and brought together local trainers, veterinary nurses and even a pet photographer to host an event centred around appreciation — not just for pets, but for the loyal customers who’ve supported them since day one. It was a chance to say thank you, reflect on the shop’s journey, and look ahead with pride.

These stories are just a handful of examples, but they show the heart, humour, and hospitality that make independent pet shops so beloved. And this year, expectations are already rising.

Retailers taking part this year can expect more of the same energy, and more tools to help them stand out. From downloadable assets and PR support to event inspiration and social media content, the campaign’s official toolkit makes it easy for stores to make the day their own. And with every shop putting its own spin on the festivities, customers can look forward to even more creativity and fun-filled events across the UK, from special offers, expert drop-ins, competitions, parties and plenty of treats, for pets and their people alike.

“There’s a real appetite for the campaign, and it’s been wonderful to see how creatively retailers responded last year,” says Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s. “We set out to create something that would uplift the sector and give independent pet shops a platform, and it’s clear that message is resonating. Shops aren’t just participating, they’re taking real ownership.”

While National Pet Shop Day is all about celebration, it carries an important message: “Use it or lose it.” Independent pet shops, like many other small businesses, continue to face challenging conditions. With over 10,000 high street closures in the UK in 2023, the need to support local has never been more pressing.

“In an era of faceless transactions and one-click shopping, pet owners value real relationships and knowledgeable advice,” says Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF. “This campaign helps remind people what’s at stake, and what we stand to lose if we don’t keep supporting our independents.”

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, agrees: "This campaign perfectly captures what Bira stands for - celebrating the unique value of independent retailers whilst highlighting the very real challenges they face. Pet shops aren't just businesses; they're community hubs that provide expertise, personal service and local employment. With over 10,000 high street closures last year alone, initiatives like this remind consumers that their choices matter. Support them now, or watch them disappear."

Final call for involvement

With just weeks to go, final preparations are underway, and more retailers are joining by the day. For those still on the fence, there’s still time to get involved and make the most of the growing momentum. Whether you host an in-store event or simply hang the bunting and welcome customers with a smile, the message is simple: you matter, and you’re not alone.

Private equity firm to acquire MPM Products

Partners Group, one of the largest firms in the global private markets industry, has agreed to acquire pet food business MPM Products, from investment company 3i Group.

Headquartered in the UK, MPM operates market leading premium wet cat food brands, including Applaws, Reveal, and Encore. MPM's products are characterised by their focus on the use of real meat and fish that is "visibly different" to mass market offerings, natural clean label ingredients, and an innovative range.

MPM sells its products in over 50 countries, with a strong position in markets across North America and Europe. The company maintains sales channels across e-commerce and retail stores.

The cat food sector is benefitting from several thematic tailwinds, including delayed family formation leading to increased pet ownership, the premiumization of products, and resilience due to the essential need of feeding pets. The benefits of wet cat food, including higher moisture content, easier digestion, and enhanced palatability, is further driving the growth of premium products, which is where MPM's sales are focused.

Partners Group will work with MPM's experienced management team to accelerate the company's future growth. Key value creation initiatives will focus on further expanding sales in MPM's largest markets, building operations in new markets, and reinforcing supply chain resilience.

Julian Bambridge, Chief Executive Officer, MPM Products, said: "Feeding is one of the key moments when owners interact with their cats, which reinforces a desire to provide something special at these times. At MPM, our goal is to enrich the lives of pets and owners through visibly better food that uses the highest quality natural ingredients and provides core health benefits. We are excited to continue our strong growth under Partners Group's ownership."

Thomas Clark, Managing Director, Private Equity Goods & Products, Partners Group, commented: "We have been tracking the pet food market as part of our broader thematic research into the 'humanization' of pets. We believe there is a significant growth opportunity in the premium cat food segment as this has historically been underserved by incumbent producers that are primarily 'dog focused'. We look forward to working with Julian, management, and the wider MPM team on our value creation plan."

Nicholas Caronna, Member of Management, Private Equity Goods & Products, Partners Group, added: "The cat food sector has strong fundamentals as cat ownership continues to rise across developed countries. The market has also been resilient across economic cycles. MPM has made tremendous strides to expand geographically, and we look forward to supporting the team in this continued growth."

Pet industry leaders launch pet grooming guidelines

Leading pet industry organisations have launched comprehensive new guidelines for professional dog and cat groomers, setting out clear standards designed to protect animal welfare and help pet owners make informed choices about grooming services.

The Guidelines for Dog and Cat Groomers, developed by the Canine & Feline Sector Group (CFSG) in partnership with the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) and the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA), address the current lack of formal regulation in the pet grooming sector by establishing industry-leading best practices.

The new guidelines provide both groomers and pet owners with clear expectations around professional standards, safety protocols, and animal welfare requirements.

The comprehensive document covers everything from qualifications and insurance requirements to specific handling techniques for anxious pets, emergency procedures, and hygiene protocols.

Rob Quest, Chairman of CFSG, said: "These guidelines represent a significant step forward for the pet grooming industry. By establishing clear benchmarks for everything from training to emergency procedures, we're giving pet owners the tools they need to choose groomers who will keep their beloved companions safe and comfortable."

The guidelines establish several key benchmarks for professional groomers, including:

  • Minimum Level 2 qualifications in pet grooming with ongoing professional development
  • Comprehensive insurance coverage protecting pets while in the groomer's care
  • Pet first aid certification and emergency veterinary contacts
  • Individual consultation processes assessing each pet's specific needs and health conditions
  • Strict hygiene protocols including equipment sterilisation after every use
  • Maximum session times to minimise stress on animals
  • Separate and specialised approach for cat grooming services

Nigel Baker, CEO of the Pet Industry Federation, commented: "These guidelines demonstrate the pet grooming sector's commitment to continuous improvement and professional excellence. By setting these standards voluntarily, our industry is showing responsibility and leadership in animal welfare.

"We're particularly pleased that the guidelines address the individual needs of different pets, recognising that a nervous rescue dog requires very different handling from a show-trained poodle, and that cats have completely different requirements from dogs. We encourage all groomers to adopt these guidelines and help raise the bar across the entire sector."

David Bowles from the RSPCA added: “Too often the RSPCA has investigated complaints on pets being injured and even killed at the groomers owing to negligence or bad practice so it is vital that groomers show their customers they take welfare seriously. These guidelines will help fill that gap consumers are crying out for and in setting out the steps to ensure any grooming business is operation professionally it seeks to avoid any problems arising with your pet.  Prevention is always better than cure and following the measures set put on the document will make sure that animal welfare is front and centre of any business.”

The guidelines represent a proactive approach to industry self-regulation, with the participating organisations hoping to demonstrate the sector's maturity and commitment to high standards ahead of any potential government intervention.

The guidelines are being distributed to groomers, veterinary practices, and animal welfare organisations across the UK. For more information visit https://www.cfsg.org.uk/dog-cat-grooming/

Independent pet nutrition retailer Pickles Pet Pantry has won the ‘Most Innovative Peptide Partner’ award at GA Pet Food Partners’ flagship European industry event.

The awards were held at GA Pet Food Partners’ state-of-the-art manufacturing site, Plocks Farm – a stunning location known for its heritage, sustainability, and cutting-edge production capabilities.

The event welcomed over 200 guests from across Europe – including retailers, nutritionists, and European partners – for what is widely considered the pet food industry event of the year.

In a highly competitive field, Pickles Pet Pantry emerged as a standout, taking home the top award in innovation ahead of industry leaders from across the continent.

The recognition celebrates Pickles’ development of its in-house brand, Peterinary, a naturally hydrolysed, high-meat-content food specially formulated for allergy-prone pets.

Peterinary blends the latest in nutritional science with natural, responsibly sourced ingredients – all inspired by the needs of the Pickles team’s own beloved pets. Peterinary is changing the lives of pets who previously struggled with sensitivities and poor digestion.

“This recognition is a huge honour,” said Katie Parker, founder of Pickles Pet Pantry.

“Peterinary was born out of a real need we saw in our own dogs – pets who needed something better, gentler, and truly effective. To have that vision recognised at a European level, and by our trusted manufacturing partners, is an incredible milestone for us.”

GA Pet Food Partners, one of Europe’s most respected manufacturers, applauded Pickles Pet Pantry’s commitment to innovation, customer education, and science-led solutions for modern pet health.

“It is remarkable to see the success of Pickles Pet Pantry in such a short space of time,” said James Bracewell, Sales Director and son of founder Roger Bracewell.

“Katie and Jack are really passionate about what they do, and that has truly shone through with the launch of their Peterinary range. Huge congratulations – it’s fully deserved.”

It’s The Dog's brings human-grade reassurance to treats aisle

The arrival of It’s The Dog’s within the UK dog treat scene could prove to be a game-changer within the wider pet food category, tackling the age-old conundrum of ambiguous ingredient decks and highly processed foods.

The reason being that It’s The Dog’s is the young, waggy-tailed sibling of The Protein Ball Co, a pioneering leader within health-minded, protein-savvy snacking for humans, a protein-rich snack provider that operates not only within the UK but throughout the globe (14 markets and counting).

As an ardent small batch, hand-rolled producer of ultra-unprocessed treats that uses only all-natural human-grade ingredients, it was inevitable that when its K9 friendly sub-range took shape, that they would also be made within the same commercial kitchen as its human-treat peers, using the very same, meticulously sourced ingredients.

According to brand spokesperson Hayley Hunt: “We actually make a point of specifying on pack ‘made for dogs, fit for owners,’ because our unwavering commitment to nutrient-dense, human-grade ingredients means that as long as your dog is happy, you can actually share these moreish treats whilst out on your walk.”

Although the core Protein Ball range is date based, a recent foray into producing a sublime  low-calorie nut butter sub-range quickly opened the door to business extending its fine snacking reach to discerning dogs.

Working with respected canine nutritionists and dog care specialists, Hayley and her team were able to craft a healthy fats peanut, butter protein ball containing nutrient-rich pumpkin seeds and ‘fibre friendly’ chia seeds that over-index in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

“The joy of a human food business like ours joining the dog treats fray,” concludes Hayley, “Is that we bring the all-important transparency and traceability that you’d insist upon when dealing with any human food provider.”

With the business soft-launched earlier at the prestigious London Coffee Festival (dog-friendly cafes and bars) and enjoying ‘early door’ wins with pub and café chains and one forward-thinking wholesaler (in tandem with a Pavillion pet shop listing), the business is now readying itself for a couple of pivotal chats with headline retailers and an eagerly anticipated PATS debut this Autumn.

‘Pet humanisation’ (treating one’s furry friend as a family member) has been the hottest trend down the pet food aisle for some time, which makes a shared snack, the obvious next step.
