Family-owned retailer wins Pet Shop of the Year award

Direct Pets has been named Pet Shop of the Year at the North East 2026 Local Awards, recognising an independent, family-owned pet retailer that has become a trusted part of the local pet-owning community across Northumberland and the wider North East.

Founded in 2010 by husband-and-wife team Tom and Jen Woodcock, Direct Pets was created to help pet owners access expert advice, quality products and personal service under one roof. Over the years, the business has grown, but its values have remained the same: treat every customer like a neighbour, take time to help and always do what is right for the pet.

For the Direct Pets team, this award is a proud and emotional achievement. Because it was decided entirely by public vote, the win reflects the trust, loyalty and support of customers who have chosen Direct Pets for their pets through every stage of life, from puppyhood and kittenhood through to their senior years.

Direct Pets is an independent family-owned pet retailer with a simple purpose: helping owners give their pets the best possible lives. The business supports pet owners across Northumberland and the North East with quality products, expert advice, community events and long-standing customer relationships.

Pet ownership is deeply personal. People do not just want to buy food, treats, toys or accessories. They want to know they are making the right choices for an animal that is part of their family. Direct Pets understands that, which is why the team takes time to listen, ask questions and offer advice based on each pet’s needs.

That personal approach has helped Direct Pets become much more than a shop. For many customers, it is a place they can return to for reassurance, guidance and friendly support. Whether someone is bringing home their first puppy, managing a dog’s nutrition, finding the right harness or looking for advice as a pet gets older, Direct Pets offers the kind of care and experience that builds trust over time.

Pets at Home and Blue Cross launch nationwide event

Pets at Home and Blue Cross are launching a nationwide summer fundraising event to help keep pets fed and families together as cost-of-living pressures continue to affect homes across the UK.

In August, the event will raise funds and collect donations for Blue Cross's pet food banks.

This appeal launches at a critical time as many households face additional financial pressures during the summer school holidays.

Since 2021, Blue Cross and Pets at Home have fed more than 4.5million pets across the country through pet food banks.

Chris Burghes, Chief Executive Officer at Blue Cross, said: “No one should have to choose between putting food on the table for their family and feeding the pet they love. Pets provide companionship, comfort and unconditional love, and they are an important part of the family, and for some, their only family. We’re proud to be partnering with Pets at Home on this initiative to help keep pets and people together, providing practical support to families when they need it most.”

Customers visiting any of Pets at Home's 450-plus stores will be able to purchase pet food parcels or make a monetary donation to support the initiative.

All donations collected through the event will be distributed through Blue Cross pet food banks and local food bank partners.

Amy Wilson, Fundraising Manager at Pets Foundation, commented: “Our purpose is to create a better world for pets and the people who love them, and nothing is more important than keeping pets with their families, living happy and healthy lives in their own home. This is something we care deeply about, so we are proud to partner with Blue Cross on this summer’s fundraising event and know our dedicated colleagues and brilliant customers will join us to help raise as many donations as we can for those who need a helping hand.”

Terriers are Britain’s fastest selling puppy says new report

Pets4Homes (pets4homes.co.uk) has just released its latest Pet Industry Report with the standout finding being that Britain's fastest-selling puppies are no longer the fashionable crossbreeds, but working and terrier types...

Pets4Homes (pets4homes.co.uk) has just released its latest Pet Industry Report with the standout finding being that Britain's fastest-selling puppies are no longer the fashionable crossbreeds, but working and terrier types.

Jack Russell and Border Terrier puppies are finding buyers in just 11 days on average, with Yorkshire Terriers, Border Collies and mixed breeds close behind at 14-15 days – even as prices hit record highs.

The Jack Russell, the UK’s fastest selling dog, also saw a 15% price increase from 2025-2026 (average price rose from £561 to £648).

Notably, the market is moving faster than ever despite surging costs. The average puppy sold for £1,093 in June 2026, up 26 % year-on-year, yet the typical puppy is now finding a buyer in 18 days, down from 22 days last year – an 18% drop. Demand is clearly outstripping a supply that's still around 30% below pre-pandemic levels.

To conduct this study, Pets4Homes analysed data from the millions of pets advertised through the platform over the past year.

Other notable findings include:

  • The French Bulldog's fall from grace continues: having lost the No.1 breeding spot to the Miniature Dachshund, it has now slipped to #5, with listings down 27% year-on-year as Britain turns away from flat-faced breeds
  • Postcode premium: the same puppy costs 30% more in London than the North East (£1,110 vs £856), and an identical Labrador costs 55% more in the South West than in Northern Ireland
  • Trust pays: puppies from licensed breeders now average over £1,600, a 44% premium over hobby breeders - buyers are paying for reassurance
  • Cats bounce back faster than dogs: kitten listings grew 20% year-on-year and have now overtaken pre-pandemic levels, while dog breeding remains around 30% below where it was
  • Unexpected boom category: poultry listings are up 57% year-on-year, with as many birds sold in H1 2026 as in the whole of 2024

The Paws Lab has launched a new Daily Protection Spray, formulated with the brand’s breakthrough SilverTi+ antimicrobial technology. Designed for dogs and cats, this gentle, alcohol‑free spray provides fast, effective daily protection against environmental microbes while supporting healthy skin and coat maintenance.

The Daily Protection Spray is an everyday protective spray for paws, bellies, and high-contact areas and designed to help protect pets before and after walks. Powered by SilverTi+, a patented antimicrobial technology, this gentle formula creates a daily shield, helping defend against the bacteria, viruses, fungi, and outdoor exposure dogs and cats encounter on every adventure.

As well as helping to protect pets from what they encounter outdoors, regular use can also help reduce the dirt and environmental microbes they may otherwise bring back into the home on their paws and coats.

A Ssmple step for everyday hygiene

The Daily Protection Spray is designed for quick, fuss‑free use at home. A few spritzes help remove surface dirt and reduce microbial build‑up.  It’s ideal for:

  • Dogs prone to environmental irritation
  • Pets who spend time outdoors
  • Sensitive‑skin pets needing gentle daily care

Co‑founder Daniel Fernandez says the spray reflects a shift in how modern pet owners approach hygiene: “Pet parents want daily care that’s simple, credible and genuinely effective. SilverTi+ gives us the ability to offer protection that fits real life — quick to use, gentle on skin, and backed by science.”

Co‑founder Andre Goon adds: “Our mission is to make everyday hygiene effortless. The Daily Protection Spray is another step toward giving owners the confidence that their pet’s skin and coat are protected throughout the day.”

A growing portfolio of daily care solutions

The Daily Protection Spray expands The Paws Lab’s portfolio of science‑driven grooming essentials, offering pet parents a modern, effective approach to routine hygiene and comfort.

PDSA's top tips for a safe summer at home with children and pets

The six-week holidays can be a busy time not only for parents and caregivers but for pets too, this summer leading vet charity PDSA is urging families to make pet safety an essential part of their plans...

The six-week holidays can be a busy time not only for parents and caregivers but for pets too, this summer leading vet charity PDSA is urging families to make pet safety an essential part of their plans.

The summer can often mean gardens full of games, playdates and children spending more time with the family pets. But while it's a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bond between children and their pets, the change in routine can also leave pets feeling overwhelmed, sometimes increasing the risk of scratches and bites.

The reminder echoes the research* from the Pet Education Partnership which found that one in five children (21%) say they have been bitten by a pet, while almost two-thirds have experienced at least one negative interaction with an animal.

PDSA Vet Nurse Shauna Walsh said: "The summer holidays are an exciting time for children, but they can be a huge adjustment for our pets. Suddenly the house is much busier, routines change and pets have far less opportunity to rest. Any pet can become overwhelmed if they don't have time away from all the excitement and if they're constantly being followed, cuddled or included in every game."

Shauna says children and pets should never be left together unsupervised, no matter how well they seem to get on.

"Pets communicate how they're feeling through their body language and it's important that adult family members recognise the signs that their pet may be uncomfortable. Most bites and scratches don't just happen out of the blue, pets often give us subtle warning signals first, but these can easily be missed by young children."

Research from the Pet Education Partnership also found that 44% of reported bites involved dogs, with many incidents occurring during everyday interactions such as playing with, picking up or feeding the dog. Almost two-thirds (63%) of dog bites required medical attention, highlighting the importance of teaching children how to interact safely with pets and always supervising them together.

How to know when your pet needs space? Children should be taught to recognise when a pet wants to be left alone.

For dogs, warning signs can include:

  • Walking away and lip licking
  • Yawning when they're not tired
  • Turning their head away or tucking their tail
  • Showing the whites of their eyes, growling or barking

Cats may:

  • Flick or swish their tail or flatten their ears
  • Hide away, hiss or growl
  • Become tense or crouch low

PDSA's top tips for a safe summer with children and pets:

  • Always supervise children whenever they're interacting with pets.
  • Teach children to let sleeping pets lie and try not to wake them suddenly.
  • Give pets their own quiet space where they can rest undisturbed if family life becomes too busy.
  • Show children and any new visitors how to stroke pets gently; avoid hugging, face-to-face contact, climbing on or pulling tails, ears or fur.
  • Do not disturb a pet while they're eating, chewing a treat or playing with a favourite toy.
  • Aim to keep garden games separate from pets, as balls, scooters, bikes and excited play can sometimes be frightening for pets or may lead to accidental injuries.
  • Maintain your pet's normal routine for feeding, walks and quiet time wherever possible.

While children are enjoying the break from school, Shauna says pets deserve a holiday from the hustle and bustle too. "Pets need time to switch off just as much as we do. A quiet room, a comfy bed or somewhere they can retreat to without being disturbed can make a huge difference to their wellbeing."

Shauna concludes: “The summer holidays provide a good opportunity for children to help care for pets in safe, age-appropriate ways. Getting them involved in simple tasks like filling up the water bowl, helping prepare meals or joining family walks teaches them how to care for their pet responsibly. It’s the perfect time to create positive memories together and by supervising interactions, giving pets their space to rest and teaching children how to behave around pets, families can ensure they keep everyone safe, happy and relaxed."

PDSA are proud to be part of the Pet Education Partnership and have collaborated with other animal charities in the sector to create an animation to help children understand how to stay safe around dogs in the home and when out and about:  https://youtu.be/603C5tyakE8?si=rGvTEt8PCutcWEvJ

Assisi Pet Care acquires Forthglade from IK Partners

Assisi Pet Care has acquired leading natural pet food manufacturer Forthglade from European private equity firm IK Partners. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1971 and headquartered in Okehampton, Devon, Forthglade is one of the UK’s leading premium natural pet food brands, specialising in high-quality, minimally processed wet and dry dog food and natural treats. Operating out of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Devon, the Company has established a highly diversified omni-channel distribution model across major grocery retailers, independent specialist pet stores and a fast-growing online platform across both direct-to-consumer and third-party online channels.

IK acquired a majority stake in Forthglade in August 2020 through its IK Small Cap II Fund (“IK SC II”). Since then and under the leadership of CEO David Cox, Forthglade has doubled revenues; significantly expanded its production capacity; accelerated its digital commerce footprint; and scaled its product offering across wet and dry food, treats and supplements.

The acquisition marks a significant strategic milestone for Assisi and its latest step in building a leading European platform in premium, natural pet care since Wind Point acquired the Group in 2023. Forthglade materially strengthens Assisi’s position in premium natural pet food, adding a differentiated, much-loved brand with strong momentum across grocery, specialist and online channels. It joins Assisi's existing premium brand portfolio, which includes Burns, Hollings, HiLife, Maced, Pet Munchies, Yakers and NAW — creating a highly complementary natural pet food and treats group with robust manufacturing capabilities across the UK and Continental Europe.

Chris Melander, CEO of Assisi Pet Care, said: "We have long admired Forthglade and the business David and his team have built. To create such a strong, multi-channel brand; trusted by pet owners across grocery, specialist retail and online, is a real achievement, underpinned by a passionate commitment to natural, high-quality nutrition. Forthglade is an outstanding fit for Assisi and we are excited to invest behind the brand and the business to unlock its next phase of growth."

David Cox, CEO of Forthglade, added: "Joining the Assisi family marks an exciting new chapter for Forthglade and is testament to the incredible journey we have been on over the last few years. I am immensely proud of how we have developed the business, establishing the Company as a trusted leader in premium, minimally processed pet food. None of this would have been possible without the dedication, passion and hard work of our exceptional team, as well as the support of IK throughout this journey. Partnering with Assisi provides the strategic support to accelerate our growth and we are all excited about the next stage for the business."

Tom Salmon, Partner at IK Partners and Advisor to the IK SC II Fund, commented: "We are proud to have supported Forthglade through a transformational period of growth. Under the leadership of David Cox and the wider management team, the Company has strengthened its position as one of the UK's fastest-growing pet food brands, driven by a clear strategic vision and significant investment across the organisation. We would like to thank David and the entire Forthglade team for their partnership and wish them, together with Assisi, every success in the next chapter of the Company's journey.”

Pet Remedy boss races e-bike through London to make King's Award ceremony

Pet wellbeing entrepreneur Martyn Bartlett-Judge almost missed being presented with the King's Award for Enterprise after his taxi failed to turn up, forcing him into a frantic dash across central London on a rented e-bike...

A pet wellbeing entrepreneur honoured by the King almost missed the royal ceremony after his taxi failed to turn up, forcing him into a frantic dash across central London on a rented e-bike.

Martyn Bartlett-Judge, from Exeter, who is managing director of Devon-based Pet Remedy, weaved through heavy traffic from Covent Garden, along the Strand, around Trafalgar Square and up The Mall to St James's Palace after realising he was running out of time.

The dramatic last-minute sprint ensured he arrived in time to receive the prestigious King's Award for Enterprise for Innovation, and even gave King Charles III a story to smile about.

Far from being unimpressed, the King was reportedly highly amused when Martyn explained the lengths he had gone to in order to make the ceremony.

Martyn said: "It's probably the fastest I've ever cycled. I was dodging traffic, tourists and red lights thinking, 'I can't keep the King waiting!' It turned out to be quite an adventure, and His Majesty saw the funny side too when I told him the story."

The Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who were also attending the event, were equally fascinated to hear about Pet Remedy and its pioneering work improving the emotional wellbeing of animals.

Pet Remedy received the King's Award for Enterprise for Innovation in recognition of its portfolio of calming products, designed to help animals cope with stress and anxiety without sedation.

The company's patented formula is used to naturally calm the nervous system while allowing animals to remain alert and responsive. Suitable for mammals, birds and reptiles, the products are now used by pet owners, veterinary professionals, rescue organisations and behaviourists around the world.

The innovation was developed in the UK and has been continually refined since its launch, with the latest reformulated blend introduced in 2025.

Martyn said: "This is an extraordinary honour for Pet Remedy and a hugely proud moment for everyone connected with the business.

"We have always believed animal emotional wellbeing deserves to be taken seriously, and this award is powerful recognition of that. It reflects years of research, determination and a commitment to creating a product that genuinely helps animals, while giving owners and professionals a trusted, natural option."

PIF opens up US opportunities for UK pet businesses

The Pet Industry Federation is helping UK pet businesses explore the US market through two major international opportunities: a supported UK delegation to SuperZoo in Las Vegas next month; and a dedicated UK pavilion at Global Pet Expo in Orlando in March 2027...

The Pet Industry Federation is helping UK pet businesses explore the US market through two major international opportunities: a supported UK delegation to SuperZoo in Las Vegas next month; and a dedicated UK pavilion at Global Pet Expo in Orlando in March 2027.

The two initiatives form part of PIF’s growing international work to help UK pet businesses make valuable commercial connections, understand overseas markets and identify new routes to growth.

Supported UK Delegation to SuperZoo 2026

SuperZoo takes place in Las Vegas from 12-14 August 2026 and is one of North America’s leading pet retail trade shows.

PIF is co-ordinating a supported visit for UK buyers, retailers, distributors and buying groups looking to source new products, meet suppliers and gain a better understanding of the US pet market.

The visit forms part of SuperZoo’s Curated Access Programme, which combines complimentary access to the exhibition and education programme with additional planning, recommendations, networking opportunities and on-site support.

The programme will include:

  • Complimentary SuperZoo exhibition registration and access to the two-day education programme;
  • A tailored exhibitor and product recommendations, based on buying-interests questionnaire;
  • Registration and meeting-scheduling support;
  • A guided NielsenIQ show-floor tour
  • Access to the International Trade Center and its meeting and networking facilities
  • First Timers Networking
  • An invitation to the SuperZoo Beach Party

The commercial education programme includes topics of particular relevance to UK independent retailers and pet businesses, including the future of independent retail, current US pet business strategies, improving margins, using financial information and key performance indicators, responding to changing consumer expectations, ecommerce, merchandising and cost-effective promotions.

PIF is also planning a dedicated UK-US networking breakfast, during the show. Speakers are currently being secured to provide practical insight into the US market, including buyer and distributor expectations, routes to market and the commercial considerations facing UK companies.

UK Pavilion at Global Pet Expo 2027

PIF is also developing a dedicated UK pavilion for Global Pet Expo, taking place in Orlando in March 2027.

The pavilion will give UK brands the opportunity to exhibit as part of a co-ordinated national presence at one of the world’s most important pet trade exhibitions.

PIF is now asking interested companies to confirm their provisional space requirements so that the overall pavilion size and layout can be agreed with the organisers.

Exhibiting as part of the UK pavilion will provide a number of advantages, including:

  • A stronger and more visible collective UK presence
  • A strong location within Global Pet Expo’s International Pavilion, positioned just off one of the show’s main trolley aisles.
  • A co-ordinated pavilion location and layout
  • Support with organiser liaison and exhibition planning
  • Joint promotional and networking opportunities
  • PIF support before and during the show
  • A more accessible route into a major overseas exhibition for companies that are new to the US market

The pavilion will be open to PIF members and is intended to reduce some of the complexity of exhibiting overseas while raising the profile of the UK pet sector internationally.

Businesses interested in joining the SuperZoo delegation or exhibiting at the Global Pet Expo UK pavilion should contact Alexandra.baker@petfederation.co.uk as soon as possible, for further information.

Details about both shows, including registration forms, can be found at www.petfederation.co.uk under the International Trade section.

Entries now open for the PATS 2026 New Product Showcase & Awards

Exhibitors at PATS 2026 are being encouraged to enter their latest product launches into the prestigious New Product Showcase & Awards, with entries now officially open ahead of the exhibition's return to the NEC Birmingham on 27–29 September 2026.

Winning a PATS New Product Award can be a game-changer for a business. The recognition has helped previous winners turn innovative launches into bestselling retail products, attract new stockists and distributors, and secure valuable export opportunities.

With entries now open, this year's Showcase is expected to feature a record number of exciting new products from across the pet and aquatics industry.

Sponsored by Leopard Co and supported by media partner pbwnews, the New Product Showcase gives buyers and retailers the opportunity to discover the industry's latest innovations in one dedicated location. Visitors can see, compare and evaluate new products before visiting exhibitors' stands to learn more.

Recognising the Showcase's importance to both exhibitors and buyers, it will once again occupy a prime position within the exhibition.

Every product entered into the Showcase will automatically be considered for the highly sought-after New Product Awards.

Each exhibit will be accompanied by an information card highlighting key product details, including the recommended retail price and the exhibitor’s stand number, making it easy for visitors to follow up with manufacturers and suppliers throughout the show.

Nestlé Purina PetCare invests in new integrated pet food plant in Italy

Nestlé Purina will see a significant capacity investment with a new plant in Mantova, Italy, as the company looks to meet continued demand growth for pet food...

Nestlé Purina will see a significant capacity investment with a new plant in Mantova, Italy, as the company looks to meet continued demand growth for pet food.

The facility will combine a wet pet food plant with a highly efficient logistics platform serving Purina as well as other Nestlé brands.

The plant will produce super-premium wet pet food for cats and dogs, for key Purina brands. The investment will bring the number of Purina production sites in Europe to 15, serving a total population of around 111 million cats and around 91 million dogs across Europe. Petcare now accounts for 29% of Nestlé sales in Zone Europe and continues to deliver strong organic growth led by real internal growth.

Rafael Lopez, CEO of Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe, said: "Petcare is one of Nestlé's four focus businesses, and this investment is a clear signal of our continued growth ambition for the category. Super-premium wet pet food is particularly attractive right now. It offers a variety of textures and sensory experiences combined with great nutrition for dogs and cats, all things that people are looking for as they welcome pets into the heart of their families."

The European market for pet food is estimated at close to CHF 30 billion. The pet population has grown strongly in recent years and people are spending more on their pets. Wet pet food is one of the fastest-growing segments, offering a variety of flavors and formats including convenient premium single-serve options. Wet cat food is a particular growth driver, with the segment growing by 8% in Europe in 2025.

The new logistics platform will serve retail customers more efficiently, support more sustainable transport flows and strengthen supply chain resilience for Purina products as well as other categories.

"The new Purina plant for wet pet food and the distribution platform strengthen our presence in Italy and at the heart of European transport corridors, enabling us to serve customers and consumers better and faster," said Marco Travaglia, President and CEO of Nestlé Italy.

The project will be developed and integrated over the coming years, with production expected to start in 2029. The facility will include a range of environmental measures to reduce emissions, lower logistics-related traffic, save water, and recover energy.Petcare is also an important growth driver for Nestlé globally.

Accounting for 21% of the Group’s global sales, the category is expected to continue growing, supported by rising pet populations, increasing demand for super-premium nutrition and the premiumization of wet cat food.

The investment in Mantova follows Nestlé's announcement earlier this year of a CHF 370 million investment in a new wet pet food factory in Brazil, underlining the company’s long-term commitment to meeting growing demand for pet nutrition worldwide.

Air-dried food brand The Innocent Hound has given its bestselling 70% Original Complete Food range a colourful new look, creating an even more eye-catching and impactful display for retailers.

Known for its vibrant use of colour across its range of award-winning treats and food, The Innocent Hound’s latest packaging refresh brings the same bold and recognisable identity to its 70% Original Recipes. The bright, vivid packaging has been designed to help shoppers easily discover air-dried food and make each recipe instantly recognisable on shelf.

The updated range includes eight air-dried recipes – six complete food recipes for dogs, including firm favourites such as Lamb Casserole, Beef Stew, and Salmon Fishcakes, alongside two dual protein complete food recipes for cats: Salmon & Tuna and Duck & Venison.

Each recipe is now available in a recyclable, resealable 1.5kg pouch, replacing the previous boxed format. The new format is easier to store at home, convenient for pet owners and creates a more impactful display in store, with the full range now aligned for maximum shelf appeal.

The award-winning recipes are available in cases of four, allowing retailers to order by individual flavour, or choose a mixed case featuring four of the most popular recipes. This makes it the perfect way for retailers new to air-dried food to introduce the category to their customers.

Chloe Heaton, Founder and MD of The Innocent Hound, says: “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and now we’ve found the right packaging to bring the whole range together. Having all our food and treat packaging aligned creates a really impactful display and helps shoppers discover and understand air-dried food more easily.

“It’s an exciting time for us as the range comes together, and we can’t wait to showcase the new look at upcoming trade shows, including PATS, and see it on shelves in stores soon.”

The gently air-dried food range is an excellent choice for customers who like the idea and benefits of raw feeding but want the convenience of dry food. Made using high-quality British meats, the food retains flavour and nutrients through a gentle drying process, while offering the practicality of no refrigeration, freezer storage or preparation – making it ideal for everyday feeding, mixing with other diets or travelling.

With the air-dried category continuing to grow, The Innocent Hound’s refreshed 70% Original Complete Food range offers retailers an exciting opportunity to introduce customers to a premium, convenient alternative to traditional dry food.

Jollyes Pets launches its own label pet nutrition food

Jollyes Pets has announced the launch of its own label specialist pet food brand Optimum Pet Health, offering science-based pet nutrition without the usual hefty price tag...

Jollyes Pets has announced the launch of its own label specialist pet food brand Optimum Pet Health, offering science-based pet nutrition without the usual hefty price tag.

Created to compete with some of the biggest and best-known brands in the pet food market, Optimum Pet Health has been designed around customer insights to make choosing the right specialist food simpler and more intuitive for pet parents.

The launch comes when vets are recommending high-priced specialist nutritional pet food to tackle a significant rise in pet obesity.

According to the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report 2025[, around half of all pets are overweight or obese.

And the UK Pet Food Obesity report recently cited that around half of all dogs and over four-in-ten cats were overweight.  The same report also highlights that almost three-quarters of vets believed pet obesity rates had risen[3] noticeably over the past 10 years, but almost eight in ten owners (77 per cent) of owners thought their pet was the right size and weight[4].

Carrying excess weight can increase the risk of a range of health conditions and impact a pet’s quality of life, yet many owners are unaware their pet is carrying unhealthy extra weight.

Through Optimum Pet Health and its in-store support services, Jollyes is aiming to help customers and breeders who often fall back to long-established brands, to make informed and thoughtful nutritional food choices that don’t break the bank.

Alongside the launch, every Jollyes Pets store is encouraging dog owners to make regular weight checks part of their pet care routine.

Each store is equipped with dog-friendly scales, and all Jollyes colleagues are specially trained and can provide nutritional advice, help customers choose the right Optimum Pet Health diet for their dog and share practical tips for maintaining a healthy weight.

Product Range Overview

The new range features ‘OptiThrive’, a blend of carefully selected nutrients, vitamins and minerals, with every recipe tailored to support dogs' individual health and wellbeing across both wet and dry food products, for different breed sizes and all key stages of their lives.

Recipes are vet approved and have undergone extensive taste testing to ensure they meet the expectations of even the most sensitive palates.

Developed with customer insight, the range has been designed to make choosing the right nutrition simple - clear health messaging, easy-to-shop packaging and in-store merchandising help pet owners quickly identify the most appropriate product for their dog, while specialist recipes, including urinary health options, are clearly differentiated on pack.

Products in the range include:

  • Optimum Pet Health Adult Dry Complete 15kg £48.00
  • Optimum Pet Health Adult Dry Complete Large Breed 15kg £48.00
  • Optimum Pet Health Junior Dry Complete Weight Control 15kg £52.00
  • Optimum Pet Health Junior Dry Complete 15kg £48.00

Customers can save almost a third (29 per cent) by choosing selected Optimum Pet Health products over comparable well-known brands and similar specialist own label ranges at other pet retailers.

Jollyes’ chief marketing officer Sean McGinty said:

"We know pet owners want the confidence that they're feeding their dogs a nutritionally balanced diet, but they also want products that are easy to understand and offer excellent value.

“Optimum Pet Health has been developed with leading UK suppliers to deliver trusted, science-backed nutrition that supports dogs throughout their lives.

"Nutrition and healthy weight go hand in hand. Many owners don't realise their dog may be carrying excess weight, which is why every Jollyes store has dog-friendly scales and trained colleagues on hand to offer practical feeding and nutrition advice.

“By helping customers regularly weigh their dogs and understand their dietary needs, we're supporting healthier, happier pets."

This product launch further strengthens Jollyes' commitment to supporting responsible pet ownership by combining quality nutrition with expert in-store guidance.

Later this year will see the introduction of the OPH cat range.

Call for ban on sale of off-the-shelf pet treatments

A cross-party House of Lords committee report is calling for a ban on the general sale of off-the-shelf and unchecked online pet treatments for fleas and ticks...

A cross-party House of Lords committee report is calling for a ban on the general sale of off-the-shelf and unchecked online pet treatments for fleas and ticks.

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee, in a report published today, argues that pet owners should receive a thorough assessment of the needs of their pets and advice about the potential health and environmental risks of pet parasiticides.

The committee found that the intensive and unnecessary overuse of Pet Parasite Medications (PPMs), often promoted by the pet pharmaceutical industry, is not supported by robust scientific evidence. Moreover, through their release into the environment from our homes, they are potentially causing widespread damage to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

The Committee is calling on the Government to:

  • establish a clear and comprehensive evidence base on the use of PPMs, including the volume of products sold, the proportion of pets routinely treated, and the prevalence of pet parasites;
  • ensure that research, with appropriate financial contributions from the pet pharmaceutical industry, addresses as a matter of priority the significant evidence gaps between the environmental impacts of PPMs and the potential risks to human health;
  • require more rigorous (Phase II) Environmental Risk Assessments for all existing and future PPMs as soon as possible;
  • advocate for a more precautionary approach to PPM use to reduce the number of unnecessary treatments, particularly for low-risk animals. This includes strengthening advice and guidance, ensuring PPMs cannot be sold without qualified advice (including online), and making risks more visible on packaging.
  • review the relationship between the industry and UK and international veterinary medicine regulators, to ensure that any risk of regulatory capture is removed and give confidence that appropriate and independent guidance is prioritised;

Baroness Sheehan, Chair of the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee, said: “Our report raises serious questions and concerns about the environmental risks of pet flea and tick treatments as well as how they are sold to pet owners. Their over-use on household pets is the equivalent of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

“The lack of scientific evidence and data, poor customer guidance and the relationship between the pet medication suppliers and regulators appear as murky as the waterways these flea treatments are polluting.

“Pet owners deserve accurate evidence-based guidance on the need for, and risks of, the existing and new chemicals which are being prescribed and the impact they are having on their pets, home and the environment.”

Piggy Fest unites Britain's guinea pig lovers

What began as a wonderfully bonkers idea became one of the pet world's biggest success stories this weekend, as Piggy Fest – Guinea Pig Festival exceeded every expectation and welcomed more than 2,700 guinea pig lovers to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park in Suffolk.

The UK's first dedicated guinea pig festival comfortably smashed its original ticket sales target of 500, with guinea pig lovers travelling from every corner of the UK – and even from the Netherlands – to celebrate the nation's favourite small pet. Official Piggy Fest T-shirts have even found fans across the Atlantic, with orders arriving in from the USA.

The overwhelming response has highlighted the incredible passion of Britain's guinea pig community. According to UK Pet Food, there are an estimated 700,000 pet guinea pigs in the UK, with around 1.2% of UK households sharing their home with at least one. Piggy Fest brought that community together in spectacular fashion, proving that these much-loved companions inspire friendships, creativity and lifelong connections.

Hosted by HayPigs! in partnership with Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park and supported by headline sponsor Supreme Petfoods, alongside Guinea Pig Magazine, Little One, Burgess Excel, Natural Nibbles, Piggie Parcels and Rosewood Pet, the festival celebrated everything that makes guinea pigs such special companions while championing responsible ownership, welfare and enrichment.

Rik and Helen Cridland, co-founders of HayPigs! & Piggy Fest, said:  "It was magical and exceeded every expectation we had for the day. Seeing so many happy faces and feeling the energy and buzz around the place was awesome.

"We knew the guinea pig community was bonkers, but they took our breath away. There is something very, very special about these little creatures that captivates our hearts, lifts us when we are sad and brings people together.

"We're so glad everyone enjoyed the day and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who showed faith in our idea and backed the festival. To the helpers, sponsors, vendors, speakers, Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park and of course, all our visitors – thank you so much for making our dream come true - you are the best. Time to start thinking about Piggy Fest 2027."

Visitors enjoyed a packed programme featuring educational talks from respected guinea pig experts, appearances from some of the community's best-loved content creators, family entertainment and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow guinea pig enthusiasts.

The festival also showcased Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park's famous Guinea Pig Village, home to 15 piggy residents who have their own church and nail bar. The Piggy Wish Tree also gave owners the chance to remember guinea pigs that had crossed the rainbow bridge – creating one of the day's most heartfelt moments.

The event raised more than £2,000 for guinea pig rescue organisations, helping support the welfare of guinea pigs across the UK.

Organisers are already looking ahead to Piggy Fest 2027, promising an even bigger celebration of the remarkable little pets that continue to bring so much joy to hundreds of thousands of homes across the UK.

American company Central Garden & Pet Company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority interest in leading European firm TRIXIE from founder Bonnik Hansen and current shareholders Dirk Jessen and Volker Haak.

The acquisition strengthens Central’s portfolio of pet and garden brands and represents a major step in expanding the company’s presence in Europe.

Founded in 1974 and headquartered in Tarp, Germany, TRIXIE has grown into the leading European pet supplies and pet snacks company. The company employs close to 600 people and serves over 30,000 pet retail stores internationally, offering a broad assortment of more than 6,000 products for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small animals, including accessories, toys, treats, snacks, habitats, apparel, bedding, and travel solutions.

Approximately 90% of sales are generated from TRIXIE’s own-brand portfolio, supported by strong in-house design team that introduces around 500 new products per year. TRIXIE is recognized for its product innovation, category expertise, and industry-leading logistics and fulfillment capabilities. Together, Central and TRIXIE create the leading global player in pet supplies.

The European pet supplies and snacks market, representing approx. €10 billion in annual sales, is expected to grow at a mid-single digit growth rate1), supported by favorable long-term trends including increased focus on pet health, pet tech, humanization and premiumization.

TRIXIE’s established portfolio and market position allow it to participate in these trends while providing Central with an attractive platform for future expansion in Europe. The combination is expected to drive organic growth through winning innovation and a strong channel presence, and to accelerate pet supplies growth, particularly in Europe, by leveraging TRIXIE's industry-leading logistics and fulfillment capabilities along with its expertise in navigating diverse European markets. This also gives Central a differentiated presence with approx. 10% of net sales generated outside of the United States and establishes a scaled platform to consolidate the fragmented European pet specialty market.

“The addition of TRIXIE strengthens Central’s position across key European pet supplies markets and adds a scaled platform with deep category expertise, strong retail relationships, and industry-leading logistics and fulfillment capabilities across the region,” said Niko Lahanas, Chief Executive Officer of Central Garden & Pet.

“Bonnik Hansen and the TRIXIE team have built a remarkable company over the past 50 years. We are pleased that a very strong management team will continue leading the business, and we believe this partnership positions us well to drive long-term growth and better serve pet parents across Europe and the United States.”

TRIXIE will operate within Central's Pet segment. Central plans to leverage its scale, sourcing capabilities, and product development expertise to support TRIXIE's continued growth while preserving the entrepreneurial culture, customer focus, and market strengths that have made the company a leader in the European pet supplies market.

"Joining forces with Central Garden & Pet marks an important milestone in TRIXIE's 50-year history," said Bonnik Hansen, Founder of TRIXIE. "I am incredibly proud of what our employees, customers, and partners have built together. In looking for a partner, it was important to us to find a company that shares our values, our culture, and our long-term thinking. We are confident that Central is the right partner to build on our strong foundation and carry the company successfully through its next stage of growth."

TRIXIE's proven leadership will remain in place following completion of the transaction. Management will continue to be led by Dirk Jessen, Burkhard Friedrichsen, and Danny Bollerey. In addition, Dirk Jessen and Volker Haak will remain minority shareholders in TRIXIE. Their continued involvement underscores their long-term confidence in the company's future and provides continuity for employees, customers, trading partners, and suppliers. Volker Haak will also continue to support TRIXIE as a consultant, contributing his extensive experience to the company's ongoing development and its activities across European markets.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of Central’s fiscal 2027, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.

Independent pet retailer selected to represent Great Britain

Fresh from being crowned Most Inspiring Athlete at the 2026 Milton Keynes Inspiration Awards, pet shop owner and Pickles Cani Running Club Head Coach Jack Avery is preparing to represent Great Britain at the International Canicross Federation (ICF) World Championships in Poland this November...

Fresh from being crowned Most Inspiring Athlete at the 2026 Milton Keynes Inspiration Awards, pet shop owner and Pickles Cani Running Club Head Coach Jack Avery is preparing to represent Great Britain at the International Canicross Federation (ICF) World Championships in Poland this November.

For many athletes, a World Championship is the culmination of years of planning. For Jack, it all began with a reactive rescue dog called Fred.

The achievement is all the more remarkable considering Jack only entered his first Canicross competition in early 2024.

A former Sussex 400-metre hurdles champion, Jack had spent years competing on the athletics track, where explosive speed and power defined his career. Canicross –running attached to your dog by a bungee line – was never meant to become another competitive pursuit.

It simply offered another way to spend time outdoors with Fred.

“Fred and I discovered Canicross because I wanted another way to enjoy the outdoors with my reactive rescue dog. There was never a grand plan to race internationally. We were just having fun together.”

That could easily have been the end of the story. But fellow Great Britain athlete Georgie Lambert saw something in Jack that he didn’t yet see in himself.

She encouraged him to enter a race. Just one. Jack agreed. The rest, as they say, is history. Less than two years later, Jack will proudly pull on a Great Britain vest for his international debut.

This November, Jack will race alongside Queen Bee, one of Britain’s most experienced international Canicross dogs.

Bee belongs to fellow Team GB athletes Georgie and Toby Lambert, two of the UK’s most respected names in the sport. Georgie has represented Great Britain on multiple occasions, earning national titles and international podium finishes, while Toby heads to Poland as the reigning ICF Masters Men’s Canicross World Champion.

For Jack, qualifying for Team GB is an incredible honour. Being trusted with Bee means even more.

“When Georgie asked if I’d like to race with Bee, I was genuinely speechless. Bee isn’t just an experienced championship dog—she’s Georgie’s best friend. Anyone who shares life with dogs knows what that trust means. To be asked to stand on a World Championship start line with her is something I’ll never take for granted.”

Halfords and Pets at Home have joined forces for a unique colleague partnership, bringing together the specialist knowledge, skills and people of two of the UK’s leading retail organisations. The collaboration saw colleagues from both businesses step forward to support one another, create memorable workplace experiences and raise funds for the Pets Foundation.

The partnership began earlier this summer when Pets at Home supported Halfords’ inaugural Bring Your Dog to Work Day at its Support Centre in Redditch. Around 50 dogs joined their owners for a day designed to promote colleague wellbeing, connection and fun.

Pets at Home helped bring the event to life with dual-branded dog accessories, pup-cakes and veterinary professionals from a local Vets for Pets practice, who were on hand to provide pet health and welfare advice.

The event gave Halfords colleagues the opportunity to spend time together outside their usual day-to-day roles, while highlighting the positive impact pet-friendly workplace initiatives can have on colleague wellbeing and engagement.

Halfords colleagues then travelled to the Pets at Home Support Office in Handforth to return the favour, sharing their own specialist expertise with Pets at Home colleagues.

Throughout the day, Halfords teams provided complimentary vehicle and bike health checks, travel and road-safety advice, Cycle2Work guidance and exclusive colleague discounts. Quizzes and fundraising activities also helped create an engaging experience while raising money for the Pets Foundation.

The partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when two major specialist retailers bring their colleagues, knowledge and capabilities together.

By sharing expertise and giving their people opportunities to connect, learn and participate, Halfords and Pets at Home have created a collaboration that delivers meaningful benefits for colleagues while supporting the wider community.

Funds raised through the events will support the Pets Foundation, which works to improve the lives of pets and the people who love them. Through grants and partnerships with rescue centres, rehoming organisations and animal welfare charities across the UK, the charity helps vulnerable pets access the care, treatment and support they need, while helping more animals find loving homes.

Henry Birch, Group Chief Executive Officer at Halfords, said: “Our Bring Your Dog to Work Day was a brilliant event for our colleagues, and Pets at Home played a huge part in making it such a success.

“It was great to be able to return the favour in Handforth, with our colleagues sharing their motoring and cycling expertise to help Pets at Home teams stay safe and confident on the move.

“This partnership has brought together two businesses with a real depth of specialist knowledge, but most importantly, it has brought our people together. We have been able to share expertise, create some memorable experiences for colleagues and raise money for a fantastic cause.”

James Bailey, Group Chief Executive Officer at Pets at Home, said: “We're proud of our reputation as a pet-friendly workplace, so supporting Halfords with its first Bring Your Dog to Work Day felt like a natural fit.

“It's been great to watch this relationship develop into a genuine exchange of expertise between two much-loved retail brands. Together, we've shared knowledge, supported the Pets Foundation and created memorable experiences for colleagues across both businesses."

Made in Britain: Why local manufacturing still matters in the pet industry

Companies such as Ancol are demonstrating that investment in UK manufacturing can coexist with competitive pricing, product innovation and commercial success. More than five decades after the business first began making collars and leads in Walsall, it is once again expanding its British manufacturing footprint – not through nostalgia, but through strategic investment in the future...

For decades, the pet industry – like much of the consumer goods sector – has embraced global manufacturing. Products bearing labels such as Made in China or Made in Vietnam have become the norm, driven by competitive pricing, efficient production and an increasingly sophisticated manufacturing base. Today, overseas factories produce goods of exceptional quality, making off-shoring a commercially logical decision for many brands.

But the conversation is changing.

Rising freight costs, geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain disruption and growing consumer interest in sustainability have prompted many manufacturers to ask a different question: What value does British manufacturing still offer?

For long-established pet accessory manufacturer Ancol, the answer is becoming increasingly clear.

From British factory floors to global supply chains

Ancol began manufacturing leather collars and leads in Walsall more than 55 years ago before expanding into webbing products during the 1970s. At its peak, the company employed more than 100 people producing collars, leads and accessories that earned an international reputation for quality, supplying independent pet retailers alongside major grocery chains throughout Europe and North America.

Like many British manufacturers during the late 1980s and 1990s, Ancol gradually embraced overseas production. As manufacturing capabilities in Asia expanded, off-shoring enabled companies to remain competitive, protect margins and broaden product ranges. The strategy was commercially sound and, for many businesses, essential for continued growth.

Today, Ancol's turnover is approximately ten times larger than it was during its manufacturing peak, yet it operates with around one-fifth of the workforce. Those staffing changes occurred gradually through retirement, career changes and natural attrition rather than wholesale restructuring, but they reflect a wider story across British manufacturing.

The UK became increasingly effective at trading products—but progressively less capable of making them.

The cost of losing manufacturing

The disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic exposed just how dependent many industries had become on global supply chains. Shipping costs reached unprecedented levels, with container prices at times exceeding the value of the products they carried. At the same time, increasing labour costs overseas, changing economic conditions and global political uncertainty highlighted the risks of relying exclusively on imported goods.

Many businesses began searching for British manufacturing partners, only to discover that much of the country's production infrastructure had disappeared. Skilled machinists had retired, specialist suppliers had closed, and entire networks of component manufacturers and supporting industries had diminished.

The skills gap was no longer theoretical – it was tangible.

A different direction

Unlike many businesses that exited manufacturing altogether, Ancol maintained its production capability throughout these changes. While several respected names in the pet accessory sector moved entirely to imported goods, Ancol continued investing in British manufacturing expertise.

That decision is now shaping the company's future.

Since 2020, the business has committed significant investment to expanding its UK production capacity. Dog bed manufacturing has been developed in-house, product design and packaging capabilities have been strengthened, leather production has been modernised with computer-controlled cutting and sewing technology, and specialist printed webbing is now designed, printed and manufactured entirely at its Walsall facility.

Further investment in 2026 includes laser cutting technology and additional computerised sewing equipment, allowing even more products to be manufactured efficiently in Britain.

More importantly, these investments are creating skilled employment and helping rebuild expertise that has been steadily disappearing from British industry.

Manufacturing adds more than products

Choosing British manufacturing is not simply about where a collar or lead is made. It is about shortening supply chains, improving quality control, responding more quickly to market demands and investing in local skills.

It also offers greater resilience. Recent years have demonstrated that businesses with diverse manufacturing capabilities are often better positioned to respond to unexpected global disruption than those reliant on a single overseas supply route.

For consumers, British-made products may represent an opportunity to support domestic employment while purchasing competitively priced, high-quality pet accessories. For retailers, they offer provenance, consistency and a compelling story that increasingly resonates with customers.

A competitive alternative

Imported products will always have an important place within the pet industry. Global manufacturing remains essential, and many overseas factories continue to produce outstanding products.

However, the industry no longer needs to view British manufacturing as an outdated concept or a premium-only proposition.

Companies such as Ancol are demonstrating that investment in UK manufacturing can coexist with competitive pricing, product innovation and commercial success. More than five decades after the business first began making collars and leads in Walsall, it is once again expanding its British manufacturing footprint – not through nostalgia, but through strategic investment in the future.

The question, perhaps, is no longer why buy British?

Instead, it may be worth asking what value is created when established manufacturers continue investing in British skills, British jobs and British production – and whether that investment benefits not only individual businesses, but the wider pet industry as a whole.
