Sausage dogs will sizzle in fleecy finery this winter, courtesy of Wiltshire company Doghouse and a cash injection of £100,000 from the British Business Bank’s South West Investment Fund.
As well as running a destination store combining a pet shop, dog grooming salon and café, entrepreneur Ruth Warren is also masterminding a growing range of own-brand products, with dachshund coats proving a soaraway success.
The money from the South West Investment Fund was delivered by appointed fund manager SWIG Finance, which manages the smaller loans element of the £200m Fund across the region, and will go towards expanding the Doghouse workshop in Bradford-on-Avon so it can deal with increasing demand for canine couture.
Ruth, who opened her first shop in 2017, said: “In fact, I had run a little pet shop for some years, but I felt there was a place in the market for something that was more of an experience,” she said.

So as well as selling quality products that are slightly off the mainstream, such as natural dog foods, Ruth added a dog grooming service (which is very popular) and a café: “I thought it would be nice to have one, because I love a decent cup of coffee. If it worked, I thought it would be a good concept to roll out.”
Ruth did exactly that, investing in a second location in the desirable Clifton district of Bristol in 2020. Meanwhile, an unexpected area of growth was identified in the tailoring department.
“My friend was making fleecy coats for dachshunds, and it was like Glastonbury tickets: I’d put them on sale, and they would all go within minutes, with a lengthy waiting list,” added Ruth. “In the end, I offered to buy the business from her and started making them in the workshop. It just grew and grew.”
Ruth, herself a life-long lover of dachshunds and owner of shop mascot and social media star Maude, attributes her success to the fact that each coat is made to suit an individual breed’s dimensions. The Doghouse design is longer in the body, and with a waterproof panel to keep the tummy dry. The business caters for breeds of all shapes and sizes, offering a complete doggy wardrobe, from t-shirts to jumpers.
The workshop also makes own-brand blankets, collars and leads. The South West Investment Fund loan has enabled operations to move into larger premises, which in turn will facilitate the growth of manufacturing to meet existing demand and even move into wholesale production.
Ruth is full of praise for funding delivery partner SWIG Finance. “SWIG was interested and invested in the business: who we were, where we were going with it, holding our hand through the process and helping us to make it happen,” she explained. “That made me think, this is the partner I want to work with.”
SWIG senior business manager Nicola Parker said: “I wanted to support the business as it offers something a bit different, which is why it has grown so successfully.
“Ruth has continued to widen the Doghouse offering with own-brand products, reflecting her awareness of their marketplace. The funding will not only enable future development of the products, it will also support increasing their online presence, including e-commerce and click-and-collect availability.”
David Tindall, Senior Manager at British Business Bank, said: “Ruth has built an inspiring brand that combines creativity and craftsmanship to firmly establish the business in the pet lifestyle market. The funding from the South West Investment Fund will enable Doghouse to expand its workshop and meet growing demand as it embarks on its next phase of growth, and we’re delighted to be supporting the business.”
The purpose of the South West Investment Fund is to drive sustainable economic growth by supporting innovation and creating local opportunity for new and growing businesses across the South West. It provides loans from £25k to £2m and equity investment up to £5m to help small and medium sized businesses to start up, scale up or stay ahead.
The South West Investment Fund is increasing the supply and diversity of early-stage finance for South West smaller businesses, providing funds to firms that might otherwise not receive investment and helping to break down barriers in access to finance.

Pet store group has big plans for further growth

A pioneering pet retailer has lined up an impressive calendar of events as it prepares for further growth in 2025.
A busy year for PetPlace – which has stores in Llangefni, Ruthin, Mold and Gledrid, Oswestry, and a HQ in Kinmel Bay – looks set to be replicated and even bettered over the coming 12 months.
Reflecting on a “challenging year” for the industry, Managing Director Sion Pritchard said the award-winning company performed well and plans to provide loyal customers with even more incentives and activities from this month onwards.
“Our amazing team are so dedicated and worked hard during what was a challenging year for the retail sector,” he said.
“We are thankful to them and to existing and new suppliers for their continued support and are excited to all work together to make 2025 a success.”
Sion added: “There are big plans to improve our offering for the thousands of pets and their owners who visit us each week, and to play an even bigger part in the community.
“Following the success of our event programme in 2024 we have even more in the pipeline and will make further announcements in the near future.”
The company’s reputation in North Wales and Shropshire was further enhanced with a series of fundraising days in aid of charities including Hope House Hospice, Greyhound Rescues, and wildlife and LGBTQ+ organisations.

Workshops and demonstration sessions with pet experts such as Carnilove, KONG, Tribal, and Acana for animal – specifically canine and equine – brands proved popular, and the Mold store was given a fresh look following a major redevelopment of the 25,000 sq ft Llangefni site.
“Events encouraging pet owners and suppliers to network and socialise were a big hit at a time when mental health and wellbeing are increasingly topical issues,” said Sion.
“And a raft of awards for our teams, the stores, and a customer service prize voted for by the public increased engagement, which has continued to rise post-pandemic.
“A particular favourite was the annual Pride in the Park celebration in Abergele, which welcomed hundreds of visitors, and open days at our other stores promoting diversity and inclusion.”
He added: “Myself, Paul (fellow director) and our amazing teams will continue to raise the bar not only for the pet sector but retail, embracing technology and innovation with our customers and their pets at the heart of everything we do.
“Thanks again to everyone who helped us to continue growing as a responsible, sustainable business, we wish you all happiness and prosperity for the year ahead.”

German company AlphaPet Ventures has added to its growing portfolio of brands with the acquisition of UK business JR Pet Products. It already owns Arden Grange, Wolfsblut, Wildes Land and Herrmann’s Manufaktur.

With a strong focus on top-quality raw materials and products, JR has built a loyal and strong customer base. The brand distributes its products over its own D2C shop and via B2B partners.

By partnering with AlphaPet, JR will gain access to AlphaPet’s resources and European distribution network, unlocking substantial potential for future growth.
Jonathan and Rebecca Davies said: “Our partnership with the AlphaPet team marks an exciting new chapter for JR. Together, we look forward to building on the strength of the brand, supported by our trusted suppliers and customers, to achieve our growth goals in the years ahead."

Honeyfield’s is helping retailers deliver best practice advice to their wild bird-loving customers by providing eight top tips, from their resident wild bird expert Simon Smethurst, who is head of sales at Honeyfield’s.
“We hope the tips will help retailers engage with their customers about best practice choices for wild bird feeding at this time of year,” said Simon. “It should be a triple win: good for the customer, good for the birds and good for sales within the category.”
- Wild birds face cold temperatures, habitat loss, and reduced food availability during the winter. Good quality supplementary feeding helps bridge these gaps by providing energy-rich food sources.
- Supplementary feeding can help encourage greater biodiversity in urban and suburban areas, allowing us to observe a wide range of species in our gardens.
- During winter, high-fat options provide essential energy to help birds combat the cold.
- Regular cleaning of feeders and feeding stations is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease among wild birds. Feeders should be cleaned at least once every two weeks, and more frequently during periods of heavy use or wet weather, which can lead to mould growth.
- Feeding stations should be maintained by removing leftover food and droppings. Ground-feeding areas should be cleared of debris to prevent the build up of harmful bacteria.
- Rotate feeding locations and provide fresh, high-quality food, only filling feeders with food that can be consumed in a day. Both of which can further help reduce contamination.
- Choose feeders designed to minimise spillage and contamination such as tube feeders with drainage holes. Those with removable feeding ports, perches and accessories are easier to clean.
- Place feeders in sheltered locations away from predators and keeping them at a safe distance from windows will enhance bird safety.

“By supplementing natural diets responsibly and prioritising feeder cleanliness, we can support wild bird populations while minimising the risks associated with feeding.” said Simon.
Honeyfield’s offers an exceptional range of wild bird feeds designed to support wildlife throughout the changing seasons. From high-energy sunflower hearts and nutritious seed mixes to suet treats and mealworms, there’s a feed for every species and dietary requirement. The range is competitively priced for consumers to be able to feed the best, while retailers can benefit from good margin structures and introductory stocking incentives.

Paddy had one minute to ask Cath as many questions as possible as he tried to guess what type of factory she worked in. He discovered that it was a food factory but was stumped for which type, especially when Cath announced the company’s products weren’t sold in supermarkets.
However, Cath was still able to give Naturaw a plug at the end of the quiz, revealed she had worked for the Wetherby-based company for five years.

Supreme Petfoods has launched a new range of Science Selective Care supplements. These new functional treats have been specifically designed to help support the health of rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas.
The innovative new products address key health priorities, including digestive, urinary and skin health, supporting general wellbeing in small pets while also offering pet parents peace of mind.
Maintaining optimal digestive health is essential for small herbivores and Digestive Care is formulated with mint and chamomile, plus natural prebiotics and fibre to support gut flora balance and aid digestion. Meanwhile, Urinary Care blends dandelion, cranberry, and vitamin C. These ingredients help reduce the risk of urinary issues, such as bladder sludging, and help maintain a healthy urinary system. To help support healthy skin and coat condition, Skin and Coat Care is formulated with antioxidant-rich spinach, vitamin C and linseed. Finally, Vitamin C Care supports immune function and overall vitality. While vitamin C is essential for guinea pigs, the supplement is also suitable for rabbits and chinchillas that require additional support.
“The launch of our Science Selective Care Supplements represents our commitment to providing high-quality nutrition tailored to the needs of small pets,” says Claire Hamblion, Marketing Director at Supreme Petfoods.
“As the humanisation of small pets continues to increase, we recognise the growing demand for products that offer health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Our new range empowers pet parents to further enhance their pets’ overall health and well-being.”
The launch comes at an exciting time, as the global pet supplement market is on the rise. Driven by the humanisation trend, with pets seen as integrated family members, the market is projected to grow by 5.9 percent over the next six years
. Furthermore, recent market research indicates that 45 percent of pet owners regularly purchase supplements for their pets, highlighting the importance of functional products in today’s pet care market.
Supreme is dedicated to supporting pet retailers and veterinary professionals by providing high-quality, effective products backed by research and veterinary recommendation. Retailers can expect comprehensive marketing support, including promotional materials and educational resources, to help them effectively communicate the benefits of these new supplements to their customers.

Thousands of pounds worth of support for dog rescue centres across the UK has been guaranteed as Burgess Pet Care brings back its Greyhound and Lurcher Two-Week Takeover.
The campaign, spanning the passionate independent company’s social media channels, will run from January 27 to February 9, featuring real life stories of pets who have found their happily after ever and of those who are looking for forever homes, as well as useful guides and tips to help care for these wonderful breeds and fascinating competitions.
A highlight is the annual call for nominations for the best rescue centre caring for the breeds, with those topping the list receiving supplies of Burgess’ Supadog Greyhound and Lurcher food.
Peter Lancaster, head of marketing at Burgess Pet Care, “So many greyhounds and lurchers have been dealt a real disadvantage in life. We continue to see how more support is required due to the pressures on charitable organisations doing their utmost to care for and protect them. Their commitment is unwavering, but in testing times, funds are hard to come by.
“We are a proud independent producer, with a strong, loyal following, and we’re keen to do our utmost to help give these loveable dogs a second chance.”
A total of £27,000-worth of stock will be distributed from Burgess’ Yorkshire headquarters as part of the campaign in 2025 – the biggest year in the campaign’s history. The takeover will focus on Burgess’ Facebook and Instagram pages, from where the nominations for favourite rescue centres will be launched.
Last year saw more than 4,000 nominations, with six rescue centres receiving the delicious and nutritious supplies of Supadog Greyhound & Lurcher food.
Greyhound Gap, who won over 100 bags of Burgess Supadog food in 2024, said that winning the competition meant a lot to them.
Founder Lisa Cartwright commented “Besides helping us financially when times are so tough, to know we are so well supported and well thought of was so nice to hear. We work so hard for the dogs and our staff team put in many hours beyond their paid time. To know it was seen and appreciated was fabulous.”
Another 2024 winner, Evesham Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue’s founder, Pip Singleton, added: “Burgess Pet Care have saved so many dogs here, by simply donating food and helping us to feed them during a particularly hard year. The reallocation of funds meant we were able to provide more veterinary care to the dogs depending on us at the rescue.
“We are so grateful to Burgess Pet Care and the Greyhound & Lurcher Takeover campaign, who give back to smaller campaigns and make such a positive impact to the rescues that they donate to, and all the dogs living there. We really hope that this year, smaller rescues who are in need of the help receive nominations and win, as we did last year.”
Support for the breeds isn’t limited to the fortnight focus however, as for every sack of Burgess’ Supadog range sold, a 20p donation in the form of free food is made to UK rescue centres.
Nominations for independent greyhound and lurcher rescue centres to receive a share of the food donation can be made on Burgess’ dedicated website page https://www.burgesspetcare.com/events/greyhound-and-lurcher-two-week-takeover/

Animal welfare charity, Naturewatch Foundation, is encouraging animal rescues in the UK to apply for their 2025 Pet Rescue Grant, which opens for applications tomorrow (Friday 24th January).
The fund is designed to help rescuers support dogs, cats and rabbits who have been impacted by the UK’s low-welfare and illegal pet trade. Thousands of animals are affected each year by practices such as illegal puppy farming, unlicensed backyard breeding and the reckless sale of pets.
Eligible UK charities and community interest companies (CICs) can apply for a grant of up to £10,000 to aid in the rescue and rehabilitation of animals exploited for profit. This year, for the first time, a mini-grant of up to £1,000 is also available to unincorporated charities and voluntary organisations carrying out vital animal welfare work in their local community.

In 2024, the Pet Rescue Grant provided vital support to Bliss Cavalier Rescue, Axholme Cat Rescue and Rabbit Residence Rescue. They used the funding to assist dogs, cats and rabbits impacted by puppy farming, harmful designer breeding trends and irresponsible pet selling.
Natale Harney, Campaign Manager at Naturewatch Foundation said, “The Pet Rescue Grant is about more than just funding; it’s about helping to give exploited animals a second chance. Although we’re a small charity ourselves, we’re proud to support the incredible work of rescues across the UK, especially during challenging times when demand for animal welfare services is higher than ever.”
Naturewatch Foundation campaigns for stronger pet welfare protections and investigates public tip-offs about the illegal pet trade in the UK. Now in its second year, applications for the Pet Rescue Grant open at a time when many UK rescues are operating at full capacity as they continue to pick up the pieces from the cost-of-living crisis, Covid-19 puppy boom and XL bully ban.
Rescue organisations that are interested in applying can visit naturewatch.org/petrescuegrant or email petrescuegrant@naturewatch.org to find out more. Applications open on 24th January 2025 and close on 21st February 2025.

Known in the trade as ‘Mr Ferplast’, Karl Davies has stepped away from the business after 30 years, handing over to his daughter Emily, who has taken up the role of UK branch director for the Italian-owned company.
Karl started his career in the pet trade 35 years ago with TFH, moving to Ferplast in 1994, originally as an area sales manager. He has seen the company through many changes and stages of growth to where it is today, with nearly 4,000 pet accessories available.
Emily's pet career started with Fish4Pets, working in the customer service department then later the marketing team. Following brief stints with a law firm and coffee company, she joined Little BigPaw, an up-and-coming pet food brand at the time, as a sales and marketing manager. In 2018 she joined Ferplast, looking after customers across the Midlands and handling office administration.
Emily will be looking to grow Ferplast's brand presence in the UK, particularly focusing on supplying more of the independent pet trade.
Karl will initially support Emily for one day a week until September while looking for a small part-time job outside the pet industry. He intends to spend his new found spare time supporting Kidderminster Harriers and visiting Bewdley Brewery.
Ferplast will be launching several new products throughout 2025 and supporting independent customers with a quality product offering, monthly promotions, and dedicated area sales managers on hand to provide customers with assistance.
Contact Emily with all trade enquiries via emily.davies@ferplast.com or 07769 740300.

Food Standards Agency issues dog chew warning

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is advising dog owners not to feed their pets specific dog chews from China following concerns from the European Union (EU) of a possible link to serious behavioural changes.
Reports from the EU suggest that these products are potentially linked to dogs experiencing what is known as ‘werewolf syndrome’. Symptoms include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits and in some cases death. There is no confirmed distribution of the chews to the UK and no cases have been detected in the UK.
Tina Potter, Head of Incidents, Food Standards Agency, said: “While there is no confirmed distribution of affected products to the UK, there is the possibility that some consumers may have purchased these online from international sellers.
“No unsafe dog chews have been identified but, based on international investigations so far, we are advising dog owners to avoid feeding the affected chews to dogs as a precaution. There is no evidence to suggest these products present any risk to human health.”
The FSA has been liaising with authorities in affected EU countries to gain more understanding of the issue.
The affected products include:
