Greater Manchester pet shop ransacked by burglars

Thieves stole charity cash, a Christmas raffle prize and more than 250 kilograms of dog food when they broke into a Greater Manchester pet business.

Owner Andi Jackson was shocked when she opened up her business to find the premises in High Crompton ransacked.

"Everything had been trashed,” said Andi. “The drawers were open and spread across the floor, there was mess everywhere, it was awful."

Thieves gained entry to the property after breaking through a panel to make a small gap to enter the business and take the items, including 17 bags of dog food, weighing 15kg each, and the festive raffle prize –a box of dog treats, toys, and essentials.

Andi, who has run K9 Grooming Solutions for six years, expanded the business a month ago to offer pet supplies.

She said: "The thieves took my new till and the cash I'd collected for a raffle in aid of local animal charities. They even took the raffle prize.

"I don't know what to do now as I'd already collected money and we were due to announce a winner on Christmas Eve.

"It's just so annoying, especially to do it so close to Christmas when everyone is stocking up.

"I know it could have been worse as they didn't take most of my equipment. But I won't let it affect the business or let it get me down."

Darcy named PDSA Pet Survivor 2016 after 60ft fall

A Cocker Spaniel who survived a terrifying fall down a 60-foot dam has won a national vote to be crowned PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year, an annual competition run by the UK’s largest veterinary charity.

Two-year-old Darcy was on a Highland walk with her owners, Gordon and Wendy Lyon, at Glascarnoch Dam in July this year. She suddenly jumped a five-foot wall, only to plunge down the concrete slipway. It was a miracle she was alive, say vets, having suffered multiple life-threatening injuries. These included a ruptured spleen, damaged liver, air leaking into her chest, fractured pelvis, a fractured and dislocated front leg and a complex open fracture to her back leg and hip joint.

After emergency surgery at a local vet to save her life, brave Darcy endured lengthy hospitalisation at Parkside Vets in Dundee for three more operations, then needed months of further treatment and rehab. At first it wasn’t clear if Darcy would ever be able to walk again, but her recovery has been described as ‘miraculous’ by her vets and she has now been awarded the coveted title of PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year 2016.

The competition, run in association with PDSA Petsurance, recognises pets’ incredible survival spirit, the love and devotion of their owners and the skill and dedication of the veterinary teams who helped save their lives. Darcy, whose family is from Kellas, near Dundee, was up against five other pets – two dogs, a cat, a rabbit and a ferret. Their full stories can be watched on the charity’s website – www.pdsa.org.uk/petsurvivor.

Reaction to Darcy’s win

Darcy’s owner Gordon Lyon said: “Darcy has come through such a traumatic experience, and our huge thanks go to all the people, too numerous to mention, who have helped her along the way. We’re beyond delighted that she has now won such a prestigious award, particularly against such worthy competition. Thanks to all who voted for Darcy to be named PDSA Pet Survivor 2016!”

Vet Hal Drummond, who conducted Darcy’s emergency surgery at Conanvet in Dingwall, was recently reunited with Darcy when he moved to Parkside Vets. “When we first saw Darcy after her accident I was uncertain she would survive, and even then it wasn’t guaranteed that she would ever walk again,” he said. “To see her running around now is nothing short of miraculous. She is an incredibly brave, sweet-natured dog, and everyone who has helped in Darcy’s recovery is delighted that she’s won PDSA Pet Survivor.”

Other finalists

Entries for the annual award were received from all over the UK and a celebrity judging panel, which included actress Pam St Clement, helped to select the finalists. The five other pets who made it into the finals of PDSA Pet Survivor 2016 were:

Arthur the cat – dragged himself home with an illegal animal trap clamped to his leg, which had to be amputated.

Bodie the Labrador – was left with horrendous wounds after a vicious dog attack, requiring several major operations.

Buddy the Jack Russell – suffered extensive burns after pulling a boiling casserole onto himself.

Dobby the ferret – nearly died after sustaining terrible internal injuries when shaken by a large dog.

Hans the rabbit – abandoned with a severely infected head injury caused by a dog or fox attack.

Animal lover and PDSA supporter Pam St Clement said: “It was so difficult to choose one near-tragedy over another; they are all deserving of the PDSA Pet Survivor title. These pets are truly brave survivors with loving two-legged owners and skilled veterinary teams for support.”

PDSA Pet Survivor is run in association with PDSA Petsurance, which offers five star* cover from the vet experts. It can cover up to £8,000 of vets fees** that can be paid directly to your vet (subject to availability), plus every policy contributes to the charity’s vital work helping pets in need. PDSA Petsurance is currently offering up to 5% discount on policies taken out online, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/petsurance. Quotes are also available by calling 0800 980 6000.

Darcy’s story

Wendy Lyon said: “We’ve walked at Glascarnoch Dam many times and she’s never done anything like that before. We have no idea why she suddenly decided to jump. We heard her ‘scream’ and then silence; we expected the worst and ran to look over the wall. Miraculously, she survived the fall and was looking up at us. But we could see she was badly injured.

“We were absolutely distraught as we couldn’t reach her. It took a while for the fire brigade to arrive as we were in the middle of nowhere. When the fireman carried her up the ladder, hypothermia was setting in and she was slipping in and out of consciousness, but she still managed to nuzzle his cheek.”

However, Darcy’s ordeal was still far from over; she was rushed to the nearest veterinary practice in Conon Bridge for emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding – traced to her damaged spleen which was removed. Despite her critical condition, she survived the night and was transported on a drip to Parkside Veterinary Group in Dundee for intensive care and specialist surgery.

Poor Darcy had a devastating list of injuries – air was leaking into her chest, her liver was damaged, her pelvis was fractured, her front leg was fractured and dislocated, and her back leg and hip joint had a complex, open fracture. It seemed a miracle that she was alive at all.

Vets were worried that they may not be able to save Darcy’s leg, but they could see she was a little dog with immense determination. They conducted complex orthopaedic surgery using plates and pins to hold her shattered bones into place while they healed. Just 48 hours after the operation she was standing up, wagging her tail and persuading staff to handfeed her favourite meal of fish and potatoes!

Darcy stayed at the vets for nine days recovering. Gordon and Wendy visited her twice a day and her tail was always wagging – she never once gave up.

Darcy had a further two operations – one to fix her front leg, which had to be fused at the wrist to stabilise it, and another to remove the pin from her back leg once it was sufficiently healed. At home Darcy required months of nursing and rehabilitation, but nothing was too much trouble for the miracle dog’s family. She received hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture, and is now able to run around and enjoy herself on walks again.

Wendy continued: “Darcy’s vets were extraordinary, they really went above and beyond for her. The treatment has cost thousands of pounds, thankfully her insurance has covered a lot of that although we have still had to pay for some parts of her rehab. The costs do mount up, but when we see her happy and running again it’s totally worth it. We’re blown away that she’s now won PDSA Pet Survivor – it’s a wonderful end to what has been a very difficult year.”

Jack, a three-year-old Jack Russell/ Manchester Terrier/Beagle cross, has been crowned the Nation's Favourite Autumn pet, after winning a competition run by cottage provider Snaptrip.

Beating 400 other entrants - from hens to bunnies - mischievous Jack's efforts to help owner Abbi Lawrence clear the leaves from the garden were enough to win £250 towards a pet-friendly cottage break and a dog-friendly goody bag.

Student Abbi, from Bury St Edmunds,  said: “Writing essays is a challenge for me due to my dyslexia. Jack supported me when I became upset. He would lick and cuddle me, melting away my stress."

Matt Fox, CEO of Snaptrip, added: “Winter can be a pretty miserable time, with wet weather and increasingly dark mornings making it tempting to stay inside and hibernate. We thought it would be fun to see how people’s pets make the most of it, though, and how we probably should too.

"It’s amazing to hear how Jack has helped Abbi through some really tough times.”

Edgard & Cooper is sharing the kibble kindness with homeless dogs. For five days the company is on a mission to put a sparkle in the eyes of less fortunate animals.

Rebecca Owens, UK Marketing Executive of the company, says: “We love to shower our furry friends with love at Christmas. Most dog owners already have their pooch presents wrapped up under the tree.

“But not every dog is as lucky to have so many blessings at Christmas time. We often overlook the dogs that will be sleeping by their owners side in the street, at a time when every dog should have a waggy tail.”

Edgard & Cooper will delivering gifts to homeless dogs throughout Europe during the run up to Christmas. The gifts consist of a 2.5kg bag of their 100% fresh kibbles, 2 wholesome cup recipes, a dog bandana, a rope toy and a blanket to keep out the cold.

It is company policy to donate 10% of all profits to dog charities.

Rebecca added: “We can’t wait to share with you the stories of those we have met on the streets this Christmas. There is one thing they all have in common, and it’s the immeasurable love they have for their furry friends. We hope it encourages others to think about giving to the less fortunate at a time when they need it most.”

Warning of gar species for sale in England and Wales

Importers and retailers in England and Wales are being warned to carefully check the gar species they sell to ensure they are not trading in illegal fish...

Importers and retailers in England and Wales are being warned to carefully check the gar species they sell to ensure they are not trading in illegal fish.

Only Atractosteus tristoechus (Cuban gar) and Lepisosteus platyrhincus (Florida gar) are permitted for sale under the Import of Live Fish Act (ILFA) in England and Wales. Concerns have been raised by the Fish Health Inspectorate following seizures it has made of hybrid and colour morphs which could potentially survive in native waters.

And the industry is being warned that if illegal gar species continue to enter the country for sale in England and Wales then action is likely to be taken to ban all gars from sale in those two countries of the UK.

However, the situation is made more complicated because gar species that cannot be sold in England and Wales can be sold in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and often enter the UK through English border inspection posts.

For the next six months, FHI will monitor any imported gars and have warned it is likely to seize imported gars of indeterminate species for checks. FHI will be using techniques such as DNA analysis to determine the species imported and whether it is a hybrid (and of which species they are hybrids).

“It’s not ideal that there are differing laws covering gars, and many other species, across the UK because it does make the situation more complicated but we have summarised the situation for the whole of the UK in advice that can be found on our website at ornamnentalfish.org,” said OATA Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee.

“We urge everyone to check that advice. In particular, English and Welsh importers, wholesalers and retailers must carry out due diligence to ensure that what you buy or sell is what you think it is. Importers are advised to ask their exporters to ensure that no hybrids are being sent - whether they appear normally pigmented or are more extreme colour morphs.

“And please remember that valid scientific names should be used - trade names and common names for species are not reliable identifiers of species. Some of the trade names apply to several species and possibly inadvertently imply cold tolerance. So purchasers of ‘snow’ gar for example should be very confident they are purchasing a permitted species.”

It is highly likely that any gars entering either Northern Ireland or Scotland will have to be imported through a Border Inspection Post in England. This will still be possible if the fish remain in unopened boxes and their final destination is clearly stated on the accompanying documents.

“While more gar species can be sold in Scotland and Northern Ireland the concern about these non-native species becoming invasive is the same – it’s just dealt with using different laws. So retailers in Scotland and Northern Ireland should continue to impress the ‘no release’ message when they sell these species – or indeed any fish.”

OATA is also concerned that the complicated picture over gar species could mask illegal sales over the internet.

“ILFA applies to everyone – not just businesses – and this situation may prove another example of bonafide businesses which follow the law losing out to people who don’t. If you see examples of fish being sold illegally in England and Wales then please gather as much information as you can, including photos and screenshots, and report this illegal activity to FHI.”

The list of top dog names of 2016 has been revealed, and it seems like the classic names are still the most popular.

It looks like owners are giving their dogs much more human names, while the site rover.com has noted many people this year have been inspired by popular culture in deciding the name of their new dog. According to the site, 53% of owners named their dogs after TV, film, or book characters or a celebrity.

One of the new additions to the list is 'Luna', meaning the Harry Potter-themed names are still popular, while it's also the name of the This Morning puppy.

On the boy's side, Max remains the most popular name for a second year in a row.

Tiny pooch saved by PDSA charity vets is home in time for Christmas

A Chihuahua needed life-saving surgery after his windpipe was torn in a freak accident. PDSA vets came to the rescue following the near-fatal incident, meaning tiny Prince will be back at home with his family this Christmas.

Two-year-old Prince’s owner, Sarah Terry (25), was walking Prince and her mum’s dog when the incident occurred: “The dogs were playing happily as usual, bounding around and enjoying themselves,” she said. “When they came back, Prince seemed a bit subdued, but I didn’t think much on it. That evening, he suddenly started coughing up blood – it was awful. We didn’t know what was wrong so we took him straight to PDSA.”

Tests at Bradford PDSA Pet Hospital revealed just how serious his injury was. PDSA Head Nurse Miriam Wilson said: “Prince’s neck had swelled dramatically and we suspected that he had torn his windpipe. Air was leaking into his body and, without intervention, he would die. He underwent major surgery to repair the tears and give him a chance of survival.

“The surgery was successful but small amounts of air had leaked into his neck and body, inflating him like a balloon. He needed intensive care throughout his recovery and it was touch-and-go as to whether he would survive.”

Prince stayed at PDSA for five days before he was out of danger and well enough to go home. Sarah continued: “We were over the moon to have Prince home with us again, but he was still quite poorly and needed daily medication. After a week his stitches were removed and now he’s back to normal, and will be enjoying the festive season at home. You wouldn’t know anything had happened to him now – PDSA have been amazing. I’m so grateful to them for saving Prince’s life.”

Now Sarah wants to share Prince’s story to help support PDSA’s ‘Save a Star’ campaign, which is raising funds to support the vital care that the charity provides throughout the festive period. She added: “Pets are a really important part of people’s lives – I couldn’t imagine my family without Prince and I want to help PDSA save more lives like his.”

Christmas is a critical time of year for PDSA. While most pets will be enjoying this time at home with their families, some others are not so lucky. This December, the charity’s dedicated vets and nurses will treat more than 50,000 sick and injured pets. With generous public support, they help people across the UK, who fear losing their best friend, by providing life-saving care. To help save a star like Prince this Christmas, just text STAR to 70025 to give a one-off donation of £5*.

The most obvious benefit of a grain free diet is for those dogs that have allergies or have trouble digesting grain-based food.

2016 saw Pedigree Wholesale launch Alpha Spirit, a range of grain free food and treats, made to a high meat formula, which is 100% natural and made from 100% food grade fish and meat.

Made using innovative tenderize technology, ensuring the meat proteins are more digestible and will therefore be more compatible to the digestive system of the dog. This has several benefits, including feeding less as more of the food is absorbed, dogs will have more energy and their digestion will be lighter and faeces smaller.

Furthermore, the proteins will be smaller thereby reducing allergies, which combined with the absence of grain and gluten, Alpha Spirit complete dog food, snacks and sticks are hypoallergenic.

Included in the Alpha Spirit range are complete food for dogs in two flavours, Multi-Protein and Only Fish. Alpha Spirit Complete Food is supplied in convenient, individual trays containing 210g which are supplied in retail packs containing 7, 27 or 45 trays.

Alpha Spirit Ristra Sticks are individually wrapped and ideal for training or as a reward. Supplied on strips containing 4 sticks, or a roll containing 16 sticks, Alpha Spirit Ristra Sticks are perfect for when you’re out and about with your dog. The strips can easily be torn off the roll and opened when required. Alpha Spirit Snacks are bite sized chunks supplied in convenient pocket sized packs containing 35g, perfect for training.
