Launch of exciting new show for fishkeepers

An exciting new consumer show has been launched to run alongside AQUA 2023, which will be taking place over three days for the first time at Telford International Centre, Shropshire, in October. The new event for consumers, called Water Alive, will be staged over two of the days and will give fishkeepers the chance to see all the latest launches in one place.

AQUA 2023 is being held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 12-14 October, with Water Alive being open to consumers on the final two days (Friday and Saturday). The Thursday of AQUA 2023 will be a trade-only day as in previous editions.

The biennial AQUA exhibition, launched in 2010, has always been a business-to-business (B2B) only event but there has been a growing feeling within the industry that ‘end customers’ have missed out on meeting all the brands and new products in one place.

Now the launch of Water Alive alongside AQUA 2023 will help consumers become more engaged with their hobby and feel part of an amazing industry. Meeting experts face-to-face in one arena will also provide them with an ideal opportunity to learn more about fishkeeping, aquascaping, watergardening and corals.

Leading exhibitor Seneye welcomed the move, with the company’s Matt Stevenson saying: “The UK aquarium trade is about to get a lot more exciting. This is going to be the biggest ever celebration of fishkeeping in the UK.”

One of the most exciting aspects of Water Alive will be the Retail Mall where a mix of retailers will sell dry goods along with plants, corals and other invertebrates. There will be no live fish sales.

Consumers will also be able to learn more about their hobby from experts giving talks at a special seminar area called Speakers Corner, plus a range of other hobbyist focussed features.

So that business can be carried out professionally and privately on the days open to the public (Friday and Saturday), a special B2B area will be available for exhibitors and visiting retailers.

Registration for Aqua 2023 is live on the website www.aquatelford.co.uk. Consumers for Water Alive will be able to book tickets at the same site from the end of March.

Companies wishing to exhibit at AQUA 2023 and Water Alive and retailers seeking more information about taking part in the Retail Mall should call the organisers on 01892 862848.

Award-winning pet shop set to close next month

An award-winning pet and animal feed centre is closing down at the end of March after 14 years in business. Poole Farm Feed Centre, which won the UK Retailer of the Year at the PIF Awards in 2014, informed its customers of the closure on social media.

An award-winning pet and animal feed centre is closing down at the end of March after 14 years in business.

Poole Farm Feed Centre, which won the UK Retailer of the Year at the PIF Awards in 2014, informed its customers of the closure on social media.

Stephen Williams and his wife Jo bought the business and farmhouse at Poole Farm, Great Yeldham, Essex, in 2009 after it had been previously owned by Jo’s parents. Previously, Stephen had worked for Walt Disney as Finance & Operations Director for its video games business.

Stephen and Jo, pictured above receiving their 2014 Retailer of the Year Award from former heavyweight boxer Frank Bruno.

In an announcement on the store’s Facebook page, the couple stated: “After much deliberation, we would like to share with you our decision to close the shop.

“We have run Poole Farm Feed Centre for nearly 15 years and it has been a huge part of our lives, but times change and we feel, for various reasons, that it is now time for us to close the doors. It has not been an easy decision to make.

“We want to thank everyone that has supported us over the years. Your support has been amazing and has been so greatly appreciated. It has been a phenomenal 15 years  – albeit hard work along the way.

“We will be closing our doors on 31 March 2023. In the meantime, all feed and bedding will still be stocked and arriving on a regular basis. Also, we will be having a closing down sale (excluding feed and bedding) – so come and grab a bargain and give us a chance to say goodbye.”

The announcement brought an avalanche of social media comments from customers. Here’s what some had to say:

  • “Sorry, to hear this guys! You’ve all been a great asset to the area.”
  • “You and your staff are all so helpful and lovely – will really miss you.”
  • “Wow, sad news for all your customers. I hope you guys have something awesome in the pipelines for yourselves, you absolutely deserve it. You guys and your staff have been excellent.”
  • “You're such a lovely bunch, so knowledgeable and helpful. We'll be lost without you.”
  • “You will be such a massive loss for our area! Always such a good service. Must have been a hard decision to make! Wishing you much luck for the future.”

Stephen shared his journey at Poole Farm Feed Centre with Pet Trade Xtra after winning the UK Retailer of the Year Award in 2014. Click on the links below to read the stories.

Double celebration for pet store owner

Pet store owner Toni Marsh had reason to celebrate twice this month – first to mark the 10th anniversary of her West Sussex business and then to rejoice in winning a ‘most loved local business’ award...

Pet store owner Toni Marsh had reason to celebrate twice this month – first to mark the 10th anniversary of her West Sussex business and then to rejoice in winning a ‘most loved local business’ award.

Toni admits it has been a challenging decade running The Pet Pantry in Selsey High Street, but wouldn’t change it for the world.

And becoming one of the UK’s Top 20 Most Loved Local Businesses has put the icing on the cake.

“Ten years ago I became the official owner of The Pet Pantry,” said Toni. “I cannot believe it has been an entire decade since the slightly naive, 20-something me took over the reins of my local pet shop – I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun!

“I won’t sit here and say it has been plain sailing – it hasn’t been. Working for yourself is hard. I don’t have an off switch. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep (and the moments where I wake up in between) I am thinking about or working on something to do with the shop.

“There’s obviously been a few big issues that have made it a tough time for businesses in the last few years, including a worldwide pandemic and cost of living crisis. But would I change any of it? Definitely not! I’m the one that gets to make every single decision about the business and I don’t have to run it by anyone, I actually can’t imagine having to have a boss now.

“I wouldn’t be where I am though without the support of all my family and friends around me and all of my lovely, loyal customers. I’m also very lucky to have some incredible suppliers and friends in the industry. They are all really are just the best.

“I’m having a weekend of celebrations and giving myself a big pat on the back before getting back straight into work mode and planning my next steps, I’m just getting started.”

UK’s Top 20 Most Loved Local Business Awards are organised by ShopAppy, a website designed to support independent retailers, and are run on Love Local Day (February 14). ShopAppy asks customers to vote for their favourite local business before compiling a list of the Top 20 companies.

“As it’s voted for by the community, this award means the world,” said Toni.

PIF launches new event to help pet businesses grow

The Pet Industry Federation has launched a new event, The Business of Pets, designed to help pet businesses take that vital step to the next level.

A two-day conference, this new event will take place on Wednesday 7th-Thursday 8th June at the purpose built Cranfield Management Development Centre near Milton Keynes and will have a full itinerary of inspirational and insightful speakers; from angel investors to key distributors, from IP experts to legal advisors and mentors who have been there, done it and are happy to share the lessons learned on the way.

Another key element of this new conference is the Innovation of the Year Award; entry is open to all businesses in the pet sector, including product, service or tech. A judging panel will select 10 finalists who will then have the opportunity to present their innovation at the event, giving them unprecedented access to potential investors. The winner will be chosen on the final day of the event.

Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF, commented: “We often hear from our members that they want to take their business to the next level but don’t have either the time, finance or support structure to enable them to do so. We have created The Business of Pets conference to help solve this problem and have curated a fantastic roster of speakers who will be able to inspire attendees to move forward profitably. I’m sure that these two days of learning and networking will prove invaluable for the business owners, directors and decision makers who attend.

“I would also encourage all pet business innovators to enter the Innovation of the Year Award; the ten finalists will have a unique opportunity to pitch to potential investors during the two day Business of Pets conference.”

Tickets to The Business of Pets conference will go on sale from March 20th. Entries for the Innovation of the Year Award will open at the end of February. For full details visit Conference – PIF (petfederation.co.uk)

Exciting new products to be launched at PATS Sandown

Seeing the very latest pet products and innovations launched under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this March’s show at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey, is set to showcase an impressive number of new items...

Seeing the very latest pet products and innovations launched under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this March’s show at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey, is set to showcase an impressive number of new items.

More than 150 companies and brands have booked their space for PATS Sandown, which takes place on Sunday, 26 March, and Monday, 27 March, and they can’t wait to unveil their latest launches in the popular New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews.

Products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers and retail experts on the first day of the show to decide the winners of the PATS Sandown New Product Awards.

There are nine categories in the New Product Showcase and past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.

EzyDog UK won the Dog Harnesses, Leads and Clothing category at PATS Sandown in 2022 with its Friday Collective Corduroy, and the company admits the award was a great launchpad for the product.

It has increased visibility and credibility, which in turn has led to more customers coming to us and trusting our services and products,” said EzyDog.

“The award has also enabled us to secure various partnerships with other businesses, as well as access new markets that we previously couldn’t tap into. Shortly after the award, we received an influx of Corduroy requests, including questions if there were more Corduroy products on the way!

We showcased the official PATS award through our social media platforms and throughout our website – it received a fantastic response from everyone online.”

The Showcase is designed to help visitors easily find the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.

The New Product Showcase entries will be displayed under the following nine award categories:

  • Cat Food and Products
  • Dog Food Products
  • Dog Treat Products
  • Dog Accessories and Toys
  • Dog Harnesses, Leads and Dog Wear
  • Small Animal and Bird Products
  • Pet Care Products
  • Grooming Products
  • Business Services

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to register for free entry, how to reach the venue and regularly updated with show news.

As well as free parking and a free show guide, visitors will receive a complimentary lunch voucher (available to those people arriving before 10am on both days) in addition to the regular complimentary tea or coffee voucher.

‘Think twice’ before buying ‘exotic’ pets, urges vet body

As new research reveals eight in 10 (81%) vets are concerned the needs of non-traditional pets such as reptiles, amphibians, birds or other “exotic” animals are not being met, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) is urging anyone considering buying one as a pet to ‘think twice’...

As new research reveals eight in 10 (81%) vets are concerned the needs of non-traditional pets such as reptiles, amphibians, birds or other “exotic” animals are not being met, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) is urging anyone considering buying one as a pet to ‘think twice’.

Sometimes known as “exotic pets”, non-traditional companion animals (NTCAs) can be very challenging to keep as pets due to their complex welfare needs. These needs include: a suitable environment and diet; being able to display their natural behaviours; and being housed with or without other animals as needed. Many also need specialist, expert veterinary care, which may not be available in every area of the UK. Some – such as primates – have needs which are so specialised they can’t be met in a typical domestic environment. Some NTCAs also have certain heating, lighting or UV requirements which, given recent unpredictability in energy bills, may increase the cost to keep them.

New BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession research has revealed eight in ten (81%) vets are concerned that the welfare needs of these animals are not being met, with the most citing ‘irresponsible animal ownership’ (82%) as the main cause. Vets who treat NTCAs reported that more than half (58%) of the NTCAs they see do not have their five animal welfare needs met and 26% have seen a rise in the number brought in for treatment in the past year.

BVA Senior Vice President and top zoo veterinary surgeon Justine Shotton said: “Reptiles, birds and other less familiar pets are intriguing animals and we understand why so many people would love to have them as pets as they are often unusual and are a bit different to owning a cat or a dog. But it is so important not to buy exotic species on a whim as they have very complex needs and it can be both challenging and expensive to look after them properly. We know people who keep these animals have the right intentions to give them the best care they can, but their needs can be difficult to meet, particularly if they are a new pet and owners are not sure exactly what they require. We want potential buyers to take the extra time to really think twice about if they can look after them properly as well as encouraging them to do proper research to ensure they know exactly what the species needs to live a happy and healthy life.”

BVA has just launched a new policy position on NTCAs, developed by a panel of experts, which sets out the need to protect these animals and ensure their welfare needs can be met. Within the position, BVA calls for more regulation of online sales and third-party advertising of NTCAs and an end to the import of wild-caught reptiles and amphibians for non-conservation reasons. BVA also recommends a pre-purchase test, both demonstrating a potential owner’s knowledge on how to properly care for an NTCA, and helping to improve education around the needs of the species.

Past BVA President and Chair of the Working Group Sean Wensley said: “The welfare of non-traditional pets is a real concern for vets, as demonstrated by the recent BVA research. The new policy position makes recommendations which will help to protect the welfare of NTCAs, including calling for improved regulation of their keeping and sale. It highlights issues such as the welfare risks of certain breeding practices and stresses the need to move away from the wild-capture of animals for the pet trade. Taken together, the 32 recommendations present a clear veterinary view on the ethical sourcing and care of these species.”

Furr Boost will be exhibiting at Crufts, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham on 9-12 March, and there will be a lot for visitors to see.

Furr Boost is a multi-award winning smoothie drink which contains a meat, fruit and vegetable, along with added oils and vitamins. It’s more than a hydration drink as it supports a dog’s wellbeing in areas such as digestion, skin and coat, anxiety, metabolism and immunity.

Voted Best Product Innovation (Food and Treats) at PetQuip Awards 2022 and Best Dog Product at the Pet Industry Federation Awards 2022, Furr Boost has multiple uses.

Furr Boost can be added as a topper to dry foods to give full hydration and extra nutritional value to a dog’s meal. On hot days or when in exhibition halls or at show grounds, you can freeze Furr Boost to make a tasty treat which your dog can lick to keep cool or you can simply pour into a bowl for your dog to enjoy. Pour into a LickiMat and you will keep any anxious dog occupied and happy.

Furr Boost is also excellent for senior dogs that need something nutritional, comforting and soothing. The product is also handy to pop in a bag or car for travelling to shows or going on holiday. Simply give the carton a good shake, flip up the sides, fold over the top along the razor strip and tear off to serve.

Furr Boost is particularly popular with Flyball and Dog Agility competitors. A carton of Furr Boost gives instant hydration to any dog that has been competing hard in the ring keeping them nice and fresh for each round of the event. It is also a refreshing drink for dogs who take part in heelwork to music and obedience competitions as well.

Furr Boost is available in three varieties, which all use the best quality 100% natural human grade ingredients: Chicken, Butternut Squash & Cranberry, Pork, Apple & Sweet Potato and Beef, Broccoli & Blueberry.

Other added ingredients include flaxseed, coconut and salmon oils, dried sea kelp, chicory root extract, yeast beta glucan, vitamins B&C and water. Furr Boost try to keep the ingredient list as simple and natural as possible whilst giving the dog key nutrients.

Furr Boost is also a sustainable product using packaging materials which are recyclable avoiding single use plastic as each smoothie is available in a Tetra Pak Carton.

Pet owners can visit Furr Boost’s stand at Crufts, Hall 1 stand 127, to purchase a pack and see how Furr Boost can be used to treat you dog in a variety of ways. There will also be a free prize draw to win a hamper of goodies for your dog and a few other surprises as well.

Microwaved meals for dogs claim to be pet industry first

HugMyDog claims its premium ready meal for dogs is the UK’s first really exciting innovation in pet food for decades...

HugMyDog claims its premium ready meal for dogs is the UK’s first really exciting innovation in pet food for decades.

The range of complete meals uses prime cuts of British meat, chicken and fish with seasonal vegetables and sprinklings of nutritional vitamins and minerals.

The frozen, microwaveable ready meals can be cooked straight from the freezer and served (once slightly cooled).

The team of nutritionists at HugMyDog has developed recipes to meet the specific daily needs of puppies, adults and senior dogs – these include Beef with Sweet Potato, Chicken with Carrots and Pork with Apple.

HugMyDog has a minimum meat content of 70% and is made from human-grade prime cuts of meat, which is bone-free, does not include offal, grains, legumes, or fillers, comprising just wholesome and nourishing ingredients.

Sara Pearson, a joint founder of The Hug Pet Food Company, said: “Historically, pet food choices have been wet (tinned), dry (kibble), ready-cooked or raw. In the same way you would not dream of feeding your baby solely on a diet of tinned or dried food, it applies equally to a much-loved dog.

“The new urban pet owners have come into the market with fresh eyes and understand that feeding their pets properly with a good and wholesome diet can extend life, minimise illness and generate health and happiness. HugMyDog has been developed specifically to meet this demand.”

Comfort Zone, the popular wellness pet brand that offers drug-free pheromone calming solutions for cats, has been launched in the UK and Europe by Central Interpet.

Comfort Zone’s products are designed to help alleviate many of the stress-induced behavioural problems that are reported by cat owners such as urine marking and excessive scratching.  The calming products contain a drug-free formula that mimics a cat’s natural pheromones so when used they help to facilitate a relaxed state. Vets recommend the use of pheromones as a general calming aid, to help adjust to the addition of new pets, and when moving house.

The first calming product to be made available in the UK is a drug-free Pheromone Collar. Available in single or double packs, it is fully adjustable to fit all sizes of cats and features a ‘break-away’ fastening making it safe to be worn whilst in the house or outside.

The new Comfort Zone collars are supplied in shelf-ready packs and are available to order now via Interpet’s trade website https://trade.interpet.co.uk/

Leading raw dog food brand Paleo Ridge recently launched its new ‘Donate Raw to Paws in Need’ initiative. This gives customers the online option to make a charitable donation of £4.55, the equivalent of 1kg of raw dog food.

Each donation made will be doubled at no extra cost by Paleo Ridge, with the aim of providing an abundance of healthy, nutritious meals to dogs in need.

Paleo Ridge is teaming up with various UK shelters to organise raw dog food deliveries to ensure hundreds of dogs are well fed. This includes the brands long-term charity partner Many Tears Rescue.

The company is also inviting customers to nominate other charities via the Paleo Ridge social media channels.

Esther Logue, Content and Communications Manager of Paleo Ridge, said: “Figures have shown that more than 3.2 million pets were brought during lockdown, many dogs have since been abandoned. Charities have seen a huge influx in unwanted pups, which of course comes with the need to fund many more mouths to feed.

“We are very excited to be working with animal charities on the Donate Raw to Paws in Need campaign. Having worked with Many Tears Rescue for over six years, we look forward to continuing to our partnership with them and introduce new partners too, thus helping hundreds more dogs around the UK have access to species appropriate food.”

BIRA, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, has said independent retailers across the UK need extra support to survive the cost of living crisis and lower footfall on the high street since the pandemic.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of BIRA said there were a number of needs they were looking for from the government in the statement, which will be given on Wednesday 15 March by Mr Hunt.

Mr Goodacre said: "The Spring Statement is an opportunity for the Chancellor to put forward plans to grow the economy. Recent figures suggest that inflation is falling quicker than expected and energy prices have also fallen significantly since last year’s chaos. This should allow the Chancellor to focus on growth and support for the smaller businesses on the high streets throughout the UK."

BIRA set out the following points that they would like considered:

  • Business rates still need wholesale reform, especially given that for the smaller retailers the rateable values will increase by 10%. We welcome the higher level of retail discount that will come into force in April, but we also want to see the multiplier permanently reduced for the small retailers to further offset the increase in rateable values.
  • Whilst wholesale energy prices have fallen, the cost to businesses remain very high and the energy support for indie retailers will fall from £6,400 per annum to £400 per annum (based on government figures). With energy companies making record profits, the windfall tax received by the government will be higher than expected, and should allow the government to do more to support businesses. This support could be in the form of grants to improve the energy efficient of the business. BIRA would also like to see those business who signed contracts when prices were at their highest last year, be allowed to renegotiate so they can benefit from lower wholesale prices The government should also commit to reviewing the energy support scheme again in October when costs normally increase.
  • Changes to the tax system with the introduction of an allowance for corporation tax. We use allowances or income tax and BIRA believes that we could see a similar system for the smaller indie retailers. This change would reduce the tax burden and encourage businesses owners to invest for future growth
  • Bring back VAT free shopping to the UK. As the number of visitors starts to increase again we should be maximizing the opportunity rather than dissuading visitors form spending money in the UK economy
  • Encourage investment by indie retailers in energy saving/ carbon reduction measures.
  • Reducing the burden on smaller businesses, starting off with the reduction of NI contributions. Tis could b done by reducing the % of NI paid, or increasing the employer’s allowance. The cost of employment is rising all the time and this small change will make a difference to the smaller retailers.
  • Review the apprenticeship scheme and create a system that allows business owners to attract talent to the retail sector and give younger people a genuine opportunity to start a career in retailing. Retail has a long and proud record of people moving from shop floor into management relatively quickly.

Mr Goodacre added: "Whilst the retail sector has changed over the years, there is still a vital role for smaller retail businesses in local communities. Some people might argue that retail shops will disappear as consumer habits change, and yet in the past 18 months we have seen internet sales fall, suggesting that the general public really value the businesses in the local community and the contribution to the local economy.

"Change is a given and the smaller businesses need time and encouragement to change. Many have started, only to be set back by other external factors such as the cost of living crisis or the cost of energy. These are perfectly good businesses who should not be allowed to fail through no fault of their own. Recent positive economic data should allow the Chancellor to be positive towards indie retailers in the Spring budget," he added.

Pet owners urged to help keep wildlife and livestock safe

The Wildlife Trusts is urging dog owners to keep their pets on short leads now that birds are nesting, species are emerging from hibernation and to protect grazing livestock.

Experts say loose dogs are one of the biggest causes of wildlife disturbance – this is particularly problematic when many species are breeding and vulnerable either on or near the ground.

Ground-nesting birds such as curlew, corn bunting and skylark, are particularly at risk. Research shows that 66% of ground-nesting birds are in decline in the UK, compared to 31% of other species.

Dogs can also be a threat to sheep, cows and other grazing livestock, with regular problems reported on land owned by Wildlife Trusts. Dog waste is dangerous for wildlife too, as it can carry diseases, scare away animals and fertilise soils, affecting the natural balance of fragile habitats.

Dog owners can help wildlife if they:

  • Keep dogs on short leads on nature reserves and the wider countryside
  • Clean up after animals and dispose of dog waste in bins or at home
  • Avoid using nature reserves if walking large groups of dogs

Many of The Wildlife Trusts’ 2,400 nature reserves welcome responsible dog walkers but instances of dogs disturbing wildlife and livestock have led the charities to issue a plea ahead of spring.

Wild places with particularly sensitive habitats or species may be closed to dogs. Some beaches have cordoned-off areas to protect rare birds that nest on pebbles or in the sand.

Joan Edwards, director of policy for The Wildlife Trusts, said: “It’s great that so many people benefit from enjoying beautiful natural areas while out walking their dogs, but we urge responsibility. Wildlife is suffering huge declines and dogs in wild places can cause problems, especially from February through to the end of summer when many species are breeding. I’m a dog owner but never walk her without a lead during nesting season. It’s not only the impact on ground-nesting birds, but other wildlife including amphibians and mammals can be affected, as well as grazing livestock.”

Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust, added: “A countryside dog walk is understandably popular, especially as we move into the warmer months. But owners have a responsibility to keep their dog under control, including around livestock and wildlife, to ensure they do not worry other animals or stray onto neighbouring land for everyone’s safety and wellbeing.

“This can be managed by ensuring dogs are kept on a short lead, and close to their owners, whenever livestock are nearby, within seeing, hearing or smelling distance or whenever their presence is likely to be expected. It is important to remember that chasing is normal dog behaviour, and that any dog is capable of chasing, irrelevant of breed, type, age or size."

The impacts of loose dogs in wild places include trampling nests and scaring adults away from their young. Vulnerable chicks can perish if left alone for too long. Disturbances can also affect feeding and foraging behaviour – wildlife is less likely to breed and feed in areas where dogs are encountered.

Wildlife Trusts have reported multiple problems with dogs chasing grazing livestock, which has resulted in the deaths of animals.

  • Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust found that dogs off leads were responsible for 40% of wildlife disturbances compared to 5% by dogs on leads. They reported multiple problems of dogs being out-of-control, including injuring livestock and chasing people.

Nik Shelton head of campaigns at Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust, said: “The biggest issue we have at the moment is owners who do not control their dogs. There were several attacks on sheep at our Pegsdon nature reserve in January and one died as a result. We had to close another reserve because people were letting their dogs off the lead in areas where livestock were present. We need people to understand that they must keep their dogs on a lead and under control for the sake of wildlife, other people and livestock.”

  • Lancashire Wildlife Trust reported problems with dogs frightening ground-nesting birds and chasing people and livestock. In one incident a cow died of as a result.

Alan Wright, head of campaigns at Lancashire Wildlife Trust, commented: “We’re a nation of dog lovers – but owners must realise the damage their pets can do if they are not under control. Only this week a longhorn cow was chased and died of exhaustion. We have also seen dogs attack people and we had to stop volunteering at our urban Foxhill Bank Nature Reserve because of pollution from dog faeces.”

Northumberland Wildlife Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust also reported recent incidents of dogs chasing birds, injuring and killing livestock, and breaking fencing on nature reserves.

The law states you must keep your dog on a lead no longer than two metres between 1st March and 31st July when on any open access land to protect ground-nesting birds.

The Countryside Code outlines that dogs must be controlled to avoid disturbing farm animals or wildlife. Farmers are, by law, entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals.

Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust, continued: “Training has a crucial role to play and at Dog School we teach owners how to ensure their dog walks nicely on their lead around distractions – such as the sights, smells and sounds of other animals. We would encourage dog owners to visit our Dog School website for more information on training techniques, or to book onto training classes.

“For dog owners living in rural areas, we emphasise the importance of habituating young puppies to livestock. This should be done gradually and considerately so the dog and livestock alike are able to feel positively and safe in close proximity to each other, again with the dog always on a lead and under control.

“As a responsible dog owner, you can also ensure that everyone is able to enjoy countryside walks and protect wildlife by ensuring you pick up after your dog and dispose of dog waste appropriately.”

Responsible dog owners who keep their dogs on leads during nature's busy season will also be helping wildlife by:

  • Lessening the negative impacts of dog poo and urine.
  • Preventing dogs jumping in ponds, which can disturb aquatic wildlife. Insecticides found in dog flea treatments can pollute waterways.
  • Reducing risks to other animals, including farm livestock.

Health-conscious dog owners and pet professionals will be able to learn more about the benefits of Canicross during demonstrations at Crufts on on Thursday March 9.

Emily Thomas and her team will showcase the benefits for and brands looking to learn more about the activity.

Canicross has seen a huge rise in popularity with owners since the 2020 lockdown when exercise was limited and the dog population soared.

Emily Thomas (pictured right) created the UK’s Ofqual regulated Canicross Coach qualification in 2022 with iPET Network in response to demand and to raise standards in the industry.

She said: “We’re looking forward to showing people how to run with their dog and the positive impact it can have for dogs and people.

“Running and spending time outdoors together has so many physical benefits and exercise is great for emotional well-being and mental health.

“Because so many people are taking part, there’s an opportunity for pet service providers such as dog walkers and trainers to offer Canicross classes.

“It’s also cost of living friendly too, and a way to bring dog owners together as a community so we hope to meet with lots of people who want to know more.”

Canicross Coach is a training provider created by Emily Thomas of K9 Trail Time, Dawn Crook-Richards of CaniX UK and Toria Seaton from Wonky Dog Therapy

Emily added: “Canicross has changed my life and it’s wonderful to see Canicross Coaches across the country supporting dogs and owners to bond, enjoy time together and live longer, healthier and happier lives.

“To be invited to showcase this fabulous sport at Crufts is a real honour and we’re excited to be taking part.”

Further to opening a new German distribution centre in late 2022, Accapi group, the exclusive European distributor of American dog brand Ruffwear, has continued to blaze a trail of growth across the D-A-CH region with plans to significantly increase business in 2023.

The performance dog brand which has a focus on producing premium gear for outdoor adventurers and their human companions has implemented its first German ‘competence centre’ in Munich-based pet specialist, Hundemaxx.

The Ruffwear zone on the first floor of the 3,000 sq. m store allows shoppers to browse an extensive range of products and have their dog custom fitted and measured, by Ruffwear trained staff, using the new harness measuring and fitting station in the store.

Herr Weber, owner of Hundemaxx said: “We have been a proud stockist of Ruffwear since 2014 and the introduction of the new competence centre has further extended the range of products from Ruffwear and extended the display area to 20 sq. metres. This in turn has increased our sales of Ruffwear and more footfall into the store from shoppers looking for specific gear to enjoy outdoor adventures with their dogs.”

Based on the very positive reception this centre has received, the Accapi Group, which represents the brand in 31 European countries, plans to open and implement several Ruffwear competence centres around Germany in the spring and summer of 2023 as well as other countries in Europe.

Ruffwear brand president, Branden Hill, visited Germany and northern Europe this month, to meet with strategic retail partners on a fact finding and market positioning mission, to take back his findings and insights on the German and European Pet and Outdoor Industry back to the Ruffwear team in Oregon USA. He also met with the European sales team with five on-the-ground agents working in Germany, Austria and Switzerland who are opening new stores with large and medium sized chains and independent stores.

David Drachman-Sunne. European Sales Director said: “Our growth plans are ambitious and are only just beginning, the demand for the brand is strong. In 2022 Ruffwear was the most searched/Googled premium outdoor dog brand in Germany which shows consumer awareness and demand for the brand is rising.

David continued: “In the times we are currently living through, the industry, tends to invest in strong suppliers and solid brands that bring stable earnings, high quality, and customer satisfaction. A reliable supply chain and delivery security have become a decisive competitive parameter. Thanks to our new team and a warehouse facility which can service retailers and dispatch orders the same day without duty or import charges, we’re now set up for success for rapid growth.”

An independent shop is set to close its doors for the final time, blaming online shopping and big chain brands for its demise.

Bucknall Pets in Stoke-on-Trent is holding a closing down sale between now and its final day of trading on Saturday, February 25.

Posting on Facebook, the shop owner’s daughter Tabitha Gulliver said: “If we don’t support local businesses, then we will all loose out.”

Tabitha added: “My dad Ian owns Bucknall Pets, a pet supplies shop. Sadly, he has made the tough decision to close down the shop in 2 WEEKS! More and more people are choosing to shop online and with the big chain brands, rather than shopping local.

“He has lots of stock still available, and so many great offers! So please, if you have a pet, pop in for some food, grooming products, toys, accessories etc! He has it all!

“Help support a local business in its last couple of weeks.”

Tabitha thanked customers for supporting the pet shop.

“I have been a little overwhelmed with the lovely stories and memories, so I thank you all for that,” she said.

Pet retailer urges dog owners to feed unprocessed food

A Southampton pet food and accessory retailer has urged dog owners across the region to include unprocessed food, such as raw meat, in their dog’s diet...

A Southampton pet food and accessory retailer has urged dog owners across the region to include unprocessed food, such as raw meat, in their dog’s diet.

New research from the University of Helsinki, Finland, found that puppies who were fed mainly dog food, such as kibble, were more likely to suffer from gut health issues in later life, compared to dogs who were fed a raw food diet, or a mix of both.

Deborah Burrows, MD of Healthy Pet Store, said that because raw food is unprocessed, it retains bacteria and enzymes which are needed for a healthy gut and strong immune system.

7000 dog owners were surveyed over a ten year period to find out what they fed their dogs. The caregivers were asked whether their dogs had experienced gut issues that lasted more than three weeks.

It was found that dogs mostly fed dog food were 29% more likely to develop gut health issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss and loss of appetite, compared to dogs who ate mostly unprocessed food such as raw meat.

Deborah added: “This study supports everything we believe in at Healthy Pet Store and has shown the importance of raw feeding for potentially protecting against gastrointestinal problems. There are also other proven benefits of raw food including improved skin, coat and dental hygiene to name a few.

“Feeding your dog a balanced diet is key and there are easy ways to achieve this with home prepared meals. Even feeding your pet unprocessed food from time to time may offer many benefits for their health. I would recommend incorporating something unprocessed such as raw meat several times a week if you can.”

The research found a strong correlation between dogs' diets as puppies and whether or not they developed gut problems in later life.

Healthy Pet Store based in Totton has been an advocate of raw-feeding since 2014. The store has one of the largest ranges of unprocessed foods in the region to allow caregivers to prepare varied and nutritious meals for their pets.

Pet firm wins Dragons' Den investment of £50,000

A company manufacturing and supplying retractable, portable dog safety gates won a £50,000 investment from entrepreneur Deborah Meaden when its owners appeared on the BBC One hit series Drtagons' Den...

A company manufacturing and supplying retractable, portable dog safety gates won a £50,000 investment from entrepreneur Deborah Meaden when its owners appeared on the BBC One hit series Drtagons' Den.

Father and son, Peter and Chris Maxted, from Horsham, appeared in the Den last Thursday, seeking investment for their Dog-G8 company.

Peter and Chris impressed the Dragons with their pitch and received two offers – the other from Sara Davies – but decided to go with Deborah Meaden because of her current links with the pet industry. In return for her £50,000 investment, she asked for a 20% equity in the business.

The Dog-G8 gate was the inspiration of Peter, the founder of the company, who has been a pet sitter for over 20 years.

Peter was very aware of the risks associated with dogs at front doors – escapes, attacks and thefts – and although there were other gates on the market, he felt they were inadequate and ineffective enough to work for all breeds.

He decided to design and sell his own version so he could keep his and client’s dogs safer at the front door.

Peter’s son Chris is also a director in the business and has been working alongside Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership and the University of Liverpool to raise awareness of dog attacks and their impact on delivery workers.

The Dog-G8 product is British made and features a modular, retractable, and portable design. The product is incredibly versatile and can be used on multiple configurations ranging from the front door to stairways, hallways, motorhomes, caravans and more. The gates modular design enables it to be spanned to any width, allowing the gate to be fitted to the widest of configurations such as patio doors or extra-wide openings where standard, conventional gates cannot fit.

The gate is made from mild steel, coated in chrome or white powder coat, bolted together with bespoke, customised clips which give the gate strength and durability.

When the gate is not in use it sits flat and compact to one side it’s neat, unobtrusive, and out of the way. Finally, it is removable, enabling it to be easily stored away or docked to other configurations (if extra brackets are purchased).

Since launch the company has seen massive growth and now sells directly to customer in the UK, Canada, United States, and Europe. The product went viral on TikTok & Facebook attracting over 80 million organic views across all videos and they attended Crufts last year for the first time where the product was well received. The Dog-G8 Company were the Theo Paphitis' Small Business Sunday Winner in March 2021.

The Dog-G8 Company is working on bringing out new variants of the current products. The business will launch a taller version of the gate within the next few months, ready for Crufts 2023, alongside offering customers a range of new colours. Now only two colours are available, Chrome and White in one height.

The business is looking to widen its distribution network by targeting the trade and wholesalers in the next year and is looking for investment to fulfil their ambitious plans for the future. Tune in to see if they can find a Dragon to invest in their business.

The gates are available to buy directly from www.dog-g8.com. Prices start from £62.95 for a standard gate and come with a range of accessories, extensions and brackets.
