Sharing the secrets of how to create a great pet store

Bents Garden & Home near Warrington picked up gold in The Greatest Christmas Awards for its outstanding pet team performance. Here we discover why the pet category is so important to the garden centre’s success.

Bents Garden & Home near Warrington picked up gold in The Greatest Christmas Awards for its outstanding pet team performance. Here we discover why the pet category is so important to the garden centre’s success.

How important is the pet sector for Bents?
The pet sector is an extremely important part of our business. We understand pets are a huge part of people’s lives and we believe that this should be shown by the quality of our Pet Place, which is another added value to our overall offering.

Can you give details of your pet features?
In addition to our retail element one of our main features is our Pet Café where customers can dine with their pets, with refreshments for both humans and hounds! We have an interactive selfie booth and encourage customers to take pictures with their pets and upload them to social media using #petsagram, which is proving very popular. We also offer puppy training classes, teenage tantrums and a guided walk around Windy Bank Woods, which is to the rear of the centre and our pet behaviourist, Lesley, can give specialist information about your pet. In addition we have an instore groomers, spa and vaccination clinic with a viewing area. We offer a huge range of products and a friendly atmosphere that enables our customers to come and enjoy their visit.

What special events did you hold for pets and their owners at Christmas?
We had various offers on products combined with specific offers for our privilege club members. We really embrace Christmas and buy seasonal products for pets such as coats, stockings, toys and festive treats. We had a Christmas selfie competition, with a prize for the best dressed dog and we have had a book signing from the author of the Pug a Lugs book series. We also have a on-going partnership with the local branch of our RSPCA who erected a pledge tree in the run up to Christmas. Other animal charities are also encouraged to join us at the weekends.

Do your customers comment on the fact that Bents is so pet-friendly?
Our Pet Café provides somewhere that people can socialise with each other and their dogs. It is always very busy as it is one of the few places within retail that allows pets in. Our colleagues are all extremely enthusiastic about pets and spend a lot of time discussing any problems our customers have with their pets.

Do you think the pet features help attract customers to your centre?
Our customers always comment on how good it is to have somewhere that they can bring their pets for something to eat and drink. The selfie booth allows customers to dress their dogs in outfits and is proving a very popular point of interest. The groomers also provide a very professional service which our customers value and recognise and as such they are always extremely busy.

Pet food firm raises nearly £100,000 in crowdfunding
Pet food company Cotswold RAW launched a £250,000 crowdfund appeal last week and the firm has already secured £99,010 from 66 investors...

Pet food company Cotswold RAW launched a £250,000 crowdfund appeal last week and the firm has already secured £99,010 from 66 investors.

Cotswold RAW is offering the crowd a 10% stake in its bustling rural business as it seeks to raise £250k that will deployed to expand its product range whilst evolving both its distribution and production infrastructure.

The comopany says:

"With some 8.5million dog owners in the UK it makes real sense to invest in a food arena which has enjoyed enviable growth, both in times of economic boom and austerity.

"With 1-3 dogs currently suffering from ‘obesity-related’ issues it’s vital that the same ‘healthier living’ momentum that is slowly but surely changing the face of human consumption is allowed to migrate into pet food.

"With a state-of-the-art, Defra approved kitchen facility (7000sq ft) Cotswold RAW stands tall as a proud family-owned, rural voice championing human-grade ingredients (meat, bones, seasonal veg and beneficial herbs), local sourcing (wherever feasible), ingredient traceability and long-term countryside sustainability.

"Pet humanisation is the popular movement which recognises that dogs are less pets and more integral members of the family, a thought-provoking realization that encourages health conscious pet owners to apply the same sensible choices to their pet’s food as they would their own: all-natural, nutrient-rich, flavoursome, the welcome presence of superfood.

"We’d love you to join us on the next stage of our adventure, however if you’re not quite sure why not watch our informative 3 minute video at www.crowdcube.com/cotswoldraw."

Exhibitor stands at PATS Sandown ‘sold out’

Visitors to PATS Sandown in March can expect a busy and exciting show as all exhibitor stands at the two-day event have now been sold...

Visitors to PATS Sandown in March can expect a busy and exciting show as all exhibitor stands at the two-day event have now been sold.

The Surrey and Esher Halls at Sandown Park will be packed with stands showcasing new products. And with the ‘Show Sold Out’ signs being posted already, there will be lots to see and talk about with over 140 companies exhibiting.

As well as meeting up with a long list of PATS regulars, visitors will be greeted by a host of new faces when the show takes place on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

Thirty companies will be exhibiting at the Spring show for the first time as they see PATS as the perfect opportunity to showcase their products to retailers and overseas distributors.

Kittyrama is a start-up company specialising in cat accessories, and co-founder and director Carolina Ballon-Forrester emphasised the importance of exhibiting at PATS Sandown. “The show gives us a unique opportunity to introduce our award-winning products to the entire pet trade,” said Carolina. “We are looking forward to some exciting days at the trade show, packed with business opportunities for a new company like us.”

Following its success as a first time exhibitor to PATS in Telford, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, has signed up to exhibit at Sandown. Paul Lilwall, PDSA Vet Care Sales Manager, said: “We were delighted to launch our Vet Care range to the trade at Telford and were pleased with the outcome. We’re already looking forward to exhibiting at Sandown.”

Regular exhibitors like Unipet International see PATS Sandown as an important event to present new products and services to UK and overseas buyers. The company’s Chloe Mitchell said: “It’s the perfect platform for us, enabling us to gain feedback on our exciting new ideas, along with keeping abreast of the latest industry news. We’re looking forward to meeting with existing and potential customers.”

One of PATS Sandown’s most popular features is the New Product Showcase, which continues to grow in size and because of its importance it will have a new and larger home in the Surrey Hall’s Brasserie Bar in 2017.

The Showcase entries will be judged by a panel of retailer judges for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, and the results will be announced and promoted throughout the halls for the rest of the exhibition.

PATS Sandown will see the return of the Grooming Workshops by popular demand after a two-year absence at the Surrey venue. Highly talented members of Groom Team England will be showing off their skills in the Esher Hall where visitors will be able to witness the expertise required to become an accomplished groomer.

There will also be a full programme of free seminars during both days of the show.

To help make the visitor experience even more enjoyable and rewarding, both the Surrey and Esher Halls have their own entrances and registration points, with visitors benefitting from free show entry, free parking, a free catalogue and many special offers.

There will also be a wide range of food available from all the various outlets and all visitors will receive a free cup of tea or coffee voucher, which will be redeemable all day. Those arriving before 10.30am will also get a free breakfast voucher.

Strong new business has been secured as a result of the PetQuip-organised British group at the last six editions of Global Pet Expo. Max & Lucy (Booth 1169) is launching a dry shampoo range for dogs. The products comprise a 100 per cent natural solution that provides a method of cleaning and freshening-up dogs without the need to use a single drop of water. Pet owners forking out up to £778 on insurance

Pet insurance enquiries have risen dramatically in recent weeks following the worrying trend of pets being given as Christmas presents. In the period from December 20 to January 5 alone there was a spike of 12%.

Sam Grant, Head of Pet Insurance, comparethemarket.com, said: “For those lucky enough to have been given a dog this Christmas, the subsequent cost of insuring your new companion could be an unwelcome shock, particularly if you have one of the less common breeds.

“For example, the average cost of insuring an Inuit, the artic working dog,  is £778 per year. The average cost across all types of pet cover, and all breeds of dogs is significantly lower but, at £187, will inevitably surprise some new owners.

“Taking the time to find a good value deal that suits your needs is worthwhile. For new pets, it is also important to consider what type of cover you think you will need, be it accident only, lifetime, max benefit or time limited cover.”

Comparethemarket.com has carried out its own study of pet buying habits and produced snapshot of its findings. Click here to see the results.

The research reveals that an Inuit is the most expensive breed to insure, with an average premium of £778, whereas an Australian Kelpie is the least expensive, with an average premium of just £84.

Molly topped the polls for the most popular dog name in 2016, followed by Patch, Spot and Bouncer.

PIF offers licensing help to pet boarders

The Pet Industry Federation has announced the extension of its successful Primary Authority coordinated partnership with City of London Corporation, to now support its licensed kennel, cattery and home boarding members across England and Wales...

The Pet Industry Federation has announced the extension of its successful Primary Authority coordinated partnership with City of London Corporation, to now support its licensed kennel, cattery and home boarding members across England and Wales.

PIF’s Primary Authority is a statutory partnership and covers opted-in members to provide tailored advice, guidance and assistance on licensing issues. It is a government initiative to cut red tape and support economic growth through better local regulation and is administered by Regulatory Delivery, part of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

The scheme standardises the criteria that pet businesses must adhere to in order to obtain their licence and ensures that businesses are not subjected to licensing officers imposing random conditions.

The local authority has to follow the Inspection Plan that PIF has agreed with the City of London Corporation, so the inspection criteria used will be standardised. This in turn helps to raise standards of animal welfare, as the criteria are based on the latest Model Licence Conditions (MLCs).

Any PIF member business who requires a licence under the Pet Animals Act 1951 or the Boarding Establishments Act 1963 is eligible to apply. The scheme is free to join.

Nigel Baker, chief executive, said: ‘PIF already has a successful Primary Authority scheme in place for pet retailers, so we are delighted to collaborate once again with the pet experts from the City of London Corporation and extend our scheme to cover all types of boarding establishments.

"We believe that all licensed boarding premises should be inspected against a consistent set of criteria to ensure a level playing field between them. This is fairer to businesses and it also safeguards animal welfare by ensuring that all types of boarding businesses adhere to a set of approved licensing guidelines.

"PIF’s scheme uses both the 2016 CIEH Dog Boarding MLCs and the 2013 CIEH Cat Boarding MLCs, and introduces a revised set of MLCs for home boarding establishments.

"The scheme is really simple for PIF members. Just let us know if you’d like to opt-in and we will send you the information you need to get signed up. If you’re not a member, speak to us today about joining and taking advantage of Primary Authority’.

Further details are available at www.petfederation.co.uk. Contact the PIF customer service team on 01234 273933 or email info@petfederation.co.uk for details of how to become a PIF member.

Millions of UK pets face loneliness, warns vet charity
Recent findings from PDSA’s Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report revealed that over two million dogs are frequently left alone for five hours or more on a typical weekday...

Christmas is now just a distant memory, days are short and cold, and pockets are squeezed after the festive season.

So it’s no surprise that 16 January marked ‘Blue Monday’, officially the most depressing day of the year. But it’s not just us feeling gloomy this January: millions of UK pets are facing long-term loneliness, warns leading veterinary charity PDSA.

Recent findings from PDSA’s Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report revealed that over two million dogs are frequently left alone for five hours or more on a typical weekday. Loneliness and boredom in dogs can lead to frustration and destructive behaviour.

PDSA vet, Rebecca Ashman, comments: “Ideally, dogs shouldn’t be left alone for more than four hours on a typical day, so it’s hugely concerning that millions are routinely left alone for longer periods of time. Dogs are naturally very social animals and need companionship. Loneliness can be very harmful to their mental wellbeing.

"Many dogs will have enjoyed the busy Christmas period with lots of company, and suddenly, when everyone goes back to work, they are back to spending much of the day alone.

“The PAW Report also found that 1.6 million dogs aren’t being walked every day and, worryingly, an estimated 94,000 dogs are never walked at all. Regular exercise is vital to encouraging positive interactions with people and other dogs, and avoiding obesity.”

Sadly, rabbits are suffering a similar life of loneliness and boredom. Despite being highly-sociable animals that should live with a companion of their own kind, a worrying 780,000 rabbits still live alone. Vets are also concerned about the high number of rabbits who are completely forgotten about.

Cats however, are solitary animals, naturally preferring to living alone. But PDSA figures show 2.3 million cats are living in homes with another cat, or cats they don’t get along with, potentially causing chronic stress and other health and welfare issues.

Rebecca added: “Ninety-three percent of owners told us that their pet makes them happy, so we are undoubtedly a nation who value and love our furry companions. But caring for a pet and ensuring you are providing for their needs can be very demanding. It’s important that you do your research before getting a pet, and make sure your chosen pet is right for you and your lifestyle. Your local vet is perfectly placed to help you with this important decision.

“Pet owners need to make sure they understand what their pet needs to be happy and healthy, and be certain that you can meet these needs on a daily basis. For example, do you have time to walk a dog every day? Do you have the space, resources and time to commit to two rabbits? While the nation may be feeling the ‘New Year blues’, it's important not to forget about keeping our pets happy too."

Brexit could make life better for UK pets
Influential Tories are calling on Theresa May to use hard Brexit to make lives better for the nation’s pets, livestock and wildlife...
Influential Tories are calling on Theresa May to use hard Brexit to make lives better for the nation’s pets, livestock and wildlife.

The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation has provided Number Ten with a blueprint on how to balance Britain’s departure from the EU with better standards for millions of domestic and wild creatures.

As the Prime Minister was making her landmark speech on Brexit this week, leading MPs and party figures were advising on what departing from the EU will mean for farm animals and pets – and the opportunities it creates to introduce even higher welfare standards.

The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation says around 80% of UK animal welfare laws, across 40 separate statutes, originate from Brussels, covering farm livestock, pets, wildlife and research animals.

There are hopes that rather than watering down existing legislation, Brexit will allow for new laws to be introduced providing even greater safeguards and welfare standards.

Sir Roger Gale (pictured), Tory MP for North Thanet and patron of the CAWF, said: “It is a priority that there is not a reduction in animal welfare standards at the expense of a drive for new profitable economic trade deals.

“The CAWF recognises the inevitable questions: what will Brexit mean for animal welfare and the importance of ensuring that laws protecting animals remain as tough, if not tougher, once the UK leaves the EU.

“Animal welfare is an increasing concern among the public, who frequently look to Government to take the lead in both maintaining and improving standards.”

Mayhem in pet shop car park

A man caused mayhem in a pet shop car park when staff accused him of stealing a rat, a court was told.

Painter and decorator Mark Collier, 51, angrily got into his van and tried to drive away from the Pets at Home store in Gloucester - but one of the staff was standing in front of him and was thrown onto the bonnet.

Amazingly, the shop worker managed in desperation to punch through Collier's van windscreen, shattering it, said prosecutor Julian Kesner at Gloucester Crown Court.

He said Collier then stopped his van and got out 'unhappy with his windscreen being shattered' and grabbed what looked like a piece of scaffolding pole from the back of his van.

"Members of staff, frightened at seeing him with a weapon and in temper, backed away," said Mr Kesner.

Collier, of Byron Avenue, Podsmead, faced charges of stealing a pet rat from the store, driving dangerously in the car park and affray.

He denied all the charges but admitted a less serious alternative to affray - a public order offence of causing fear of provocation or violence.

Mr Kesner said that as no evidence of the rat being stolen was ever found he would accept the pleas and drop the original charges.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC told Collier: "When I first read the details of this case it looked really rather serious but the prosecution have taken a view and it is not one I am going to gainsay. You ended up with a smashed windscreen and as a result lost your job."

The judge conditionally discharged Collier for two years.

Puppy survives after swallowing 8-inch kitchen knife

A 12-week-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been saved by emergency surgery thanks to vet charity PDSA, after swallowing a kitchen knife.

In one of the most astonishing x-rays ever seen, the eight-inch knife is clearly visible in the tiny puppy’s body.

Owner Irene Paisley (46), from Glasgow, rushed puppy Macie to PDSA’s emergency out-of-hours vet service after the 12-week-old began choking:

“Macie was making a squeaking sound – I thought she’d swallowed part of a toy,” says Irene. “Then she was sick, but there was no sign of a toy and she started choking.”

Having lost her previous Staffie to cancer just two months earlier, Irene feared the worst.

“I was terrified. Poor Macie was still choking and, by the time we arrived at the vet’s, there was blood coming out of her nose. The loss of our previous dog was still very raw and the thought of losing Macie was devastating.”

The young puppy was admitted, and x-rays immediately revealed the severity of the situation. The knife handle had passed through Macie’s stomach and into her intestines, while the tip of the knife was still in her gullet. She underwent emergency surgery straight away to remove the knife while Irene, her partner and four children waited at home for news.

Irene added: “I couldn’t believe it when they said Macie had swallowed a knife. I have no idea where she got hold of it – she could have pinched it out of the dishwasher, but no-one saw what happened. None of us could sleep that night as we knew Macie might not survive.”

Happily, the operation was a success and the following morning Macie was transferred to the PDSA Pet Hospital in Shamrock Street, where her recovery began.

PDSA Vet, Emily Ronald, said: “I’ve never seen an x-ray like Macie’s. She was extremely lucky to survive. Her saving grace was that she swallowed the handle-end first – the blade-end would undoubtedly have pierced her organs, likely causing fatal injuries.

“The morning after surgery, she was bouncing all over the place as if nothing had happened. Macie has been back for frequent check-ups over the past two weeks and we’re pleased she’s recovering and healing well.”

Expressing her gratitude to PDSA, Irene said: “although she’s only young, Macie is already a big part of the family. She brings us so much joy and happiness, and means the world to the children. Without PDSA, she wouldn’t have recevied her life-saving treatment and wouldn’t be here today.”

Vet Emily added: “Macie is just one of the lucky pets to benefit from PDSA’s emergency service which has received generous funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Thanks to their support we’re able to provide thousands of life-saving treatments across the UK.”

As well as using their mouths to eat, dogs also use them to investigate objects. But can sometimes they can swallow an item by mistake. Known as ‘pica’, this behaviour can lead to dogs eating some very bizarre objects. Over the years, PDSA vets have removed everything from tent pegs and golf balls, to radio aerials and rubber ducks during surgery.

An opening date for Bath's new Pets At Home store has been confirmed.

The pet supplies chain will move into one of three units being created in part of the city's old Herman Miller factory along Lower Bristol Road.

Price discounter Poundland is also expected to take another of the vacant spaces while keeping its shop in Westgate Street.

A Pets at Home spokesman confirmed the new store will open to customers on Friday, March 10.

It will include a Vets4Pets surgery, which will open at 9am that day.

Last August Pets at Home, which has more than 400 stores, put in a specific application to fit out Unit 3 at what will be known as Metro Retail Park next to Lidl.

The firm - whose nearest stores are in Brislington, Chippenham and Trowbridge - says it will be employing 12 people in the 9,000 sq ft unit.

The old factory is grade two listed because of its innovative design and the Lidl store next door has been fitted into the western half of the building.
