TV wildlife expert backs up Natures Menu research

TV wildlife expert Chris Packham has welcomed research by natural pet food specialists Natures Menu which reveals 60% of British dogs suffer from health problems, stating: "I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending a raw diet to any fellow dog owner.”

TV wildlife expert Chris Packham has welcomed research by natural pet food specialists Natures Menu which reveals 60% of British dogs suffer from health problems, stating: "I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending a raw diet to any fellow dog owner.”

The research of over 1,000 dog owners in the UK* has revealed two thirds of dogs suffer from some sort of health issue such as allergies, dental or stomach problems. Bad breath is the most common problem (26%) and over 20% admit their dog is overweight.

Despite this, over 60% of owners aren’t aware that poor nutrition is one of the leading causes of health issues such as these, which can be vastly improved by changing to a raw diet.

Chris Packham, who feeds his poodle Scratchy raw, said: “I’ve seen a massive difference in Scratchy since switching to a Natures Menu raw diet. He has so much more energy and the condition of his coat and teeth have improved massively. I would really encourage people to check what they’re feeding their dog and take note of any health issues they might be experiencing - I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending a raw diet to any fellow dog owner.”

Of the owners surveyed, the research has a revealed a lack of understanding of what really goes into our dogs’ food.

Almost a quarter (23%) of dog owners admit to paying little or no attention to what’s on the label of the current dog food they purchase and over 10% say they don’t really know what’s healthy or nutritious for their furry friend.

Interestingly, men (32%) are less likely to check the label on their dog food versus women (36%) and similarly women (29%) are more aware of what’s healthy for their dog compared to their male counterparts (27%).

Raw feeding aims to give dogs a diet appropriate to their digestive system and as close as possible to what they might have eaten as wild animals. It has been shown on countless occasions to make an extraordinary difference to a pet’s health and wellbeing.

Craig Taylor, Managing Director of Natures Menu, said: “As a nation, we all care so much about our furry friends and this should extend to what we’re feeding them too.

“Raw feeding not only has its benefits in terms of nourishment and easy digestion, but has also been shown to help alleviate a number of health issues, such as chronic skin and digestive problems.  This research has shown that as an industry we should work together to educate consumers on the importance of good nutrition in ensuring a healthy, and ultimately happy, pet.”

Produced in Norfolk, Natures Menu’s products are DEFRA and veterinary approved, made with ethically sourced human grade meat and wholesome ingredients. The company is committed to ensuring the meats used come with the highest welfare standards and traceability, are ethically reared, and where possible deal directly with the grower, farmer or meat provider.

Naturo launches free meals for dogs initiative in pubs

Natural pet food company, Naturo has teamed up with an award-winning pub group Red Mist Leisure to launch a ‘DOG’S EAT FREE’ initiative across across Surrey and Hampshire...

Natural pet food company, Naturo has teamed up with an award-winning pub group Red Mist Leisure to launch a ‘DOG’S EAT FREE’ initiative across across Surrey and Hampshire.

The doggy menu of complimentary meals and baked treats for man’s best friend could be served across the country if the dining experiment by Naturo proves successful.

Red Mist Leisure is reaching out to four-legged visitors, offering a free doggy menu behind four of its bars across Surrey and Hampshire.

Owners wanting to give their pets a treat, can pick from the special ‘Dogs Eat Free’  menu, where 100 % natural, succulent salmon & rice with vegetables, delicious duck & rice with vegetables or lovely lamb & rice with vegetables will see doggy diners leaving the pub with a wagging tail.

Complimentary Naturo baked dog treats will also be available from the bar, where Fido can enjoy liver brownies and liver and cranberry biscotti.

Comments Claire McCann, Naturo brand manager: “For dogs around the country, a walk to the pub has long been rewarded with only a dish of water and the odd morsel from owner’s plates, but now they can tuck into a complimentary meal of their own a.

"A family walk is a great way to strengthen that special emotional connection with your dog, and stopping off at a pub to enjoy a drink and bite to eat is a great British institution.”

The canine menus will be on display on printed menus inside the pub and behind the bar, with the idea that dog walkers will treat their pets at the same time as ordering their own pub meal.

Comments, Red Mist Leisure MD, Mark Robson: “We pride ourselves on being dog friendly and welcoming well behaved dogs to our pubs. Many of our sites are located near popular walking routes and attract customers out to enjoy the countryside with their four-legged companions and we are confident our new complimentary doggy menu will be a huge hit with our customers and their dogs.

If the free trial at four of Red Mist Leisure’s pubs  (The Cock Inn - Headley Village, The Stag – Eashing, The Duke Of Cambridge – Tilford and The Exchequer – Church Crookham) is successful, the menus could be rolled out across the group’s other dog friendly pubs across Surrey and Hampshire.

Everything in the Naturo range is made with 100% natural ingredients and up to 60% high quality meat using predominantly Irish and British meats which are world-renowned for quality. The range contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and is wheat and gluten free.

Ninety-year-old Irene Astbury, who works 40 hours a week at Pet Food Supplies on Moss Lane, Macclesfield, is thought to be the UK’s oldest women still working full time.

To mark the achievement Irene has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cheshire Woman of Year celebrations.

Her energy and determination saw her nominated for the Cheshire Woman of the Year award.

And while Irene didn’t scoop the main gong, she did walk away with a special Lifetime Achievement award.

Now the certificate is on show to customers at the business she opened with her husband Les more then 36 years ago.

Irene said she was ‘very honoured’ to have been recognised.

Her granddaughter Gayle Parks, who works alongside her in the family business, said it was a mystery as to who nominated Irene.

She said: “We don’t have a clue who put nana forward. When we got a call saying she was shortlisted we thought it was a wind up.

“But then we got an official letter and we were blown away. We are so proud of her. It’s wonderful.”

Pet accessories firm Henry Wag undergoes rebranding

Henry Wag, the pet accessories manufacturer, has recently rebranded to position itself in line with its vision of providing products which influence attitudes to pet care...

Henry Wag, the pet accessories manufacturer, has recently rebranded to position itself in line with its vision of providing products which influence attitudes to pet care and provide a better more caring lifestyle for pets.

Humanisation of pets by devoted pet parents is creating a demand for products which will help to develop a full and interactive relationship and simplify the tasks associated with the close pet/owner relationship.

Pets are now treated with the same love and care as any other family member. They travel extensively with their parent and are considered a full part of the family.

By influencing attitudes to pet care, Henry Wag seeks to nurture and enhance the close partnership between pet and pet parent, remove the barriers to the development of this relationship and help to support and protect pets throughout their life.

Henry Wag offers a range of products designed to improve the health and wellbeing of pets and simplify pet ownership.

The new branding of the Henry Wag range is positioned to demonstrate how its products will enhance the lifestyle of pets and their owners as well as positively influence how parents care for their pets.

For example, the Henry Wag dog ramp offers senior dogs or those with mobility issues the freedom to climb in and out of the car with ease. The ramp benefits the owner, who no longer needs to lift their dog into the car, and  also helps the dog to maintain its independence whilst avoiding any pain and discomfort.

And if you can get your pet in and out of the car easily it means that pet parents can take their dogs to new places with different and exciting new smells and experiences which leads to a fulfilled and healthier lifestyle for both pet and owner.

Likewise, the new Henry Wag Microfibre Cleaning Glove and Towels, which are launched this month, allow owners to effectively remove water, mud and dirt from their dog’s coat and paws after a walk. This not only ensures that the owner’s car remains dry and clean even after wettest ramble but perhaps more importantly ensures that pets are not exposed to potentially harmful mud born bacteria which can adversely affect the health and wellbeing of dogs.

To enhance the new brand position, Henry Wag has a new logo designed to have personality and be friendly and fun with new brand colours which are sophisticated, assured and confident. All Henry Wag products will be repackaged with focus given to increasing customer awareness of the features and benefits of the products and presented in an aspirational lifestyle design.

Existing Henry Wag products are being manufactured in the new packaging and will be available to order from the end of June. Further details can be found at henrywag.com

Helping potential pet owners find the right breed

Eukanuba has introduced Breed-o-pedia, an online tool that advises on the different breeds available, the lifestyles they are most suited to, and the premium nutrition needed for visible benefits with a lifelong impact...

Eukanuba has introduced Breed-o-pedia, an online tool that advises on the different breeds available, the lifestyles they are most suited to, and the premium nutrition needed for visible benefits with a lifelong impact.

Providing a wealth of information, Eukanuba’s Breed-o-pedia allows users to search by breed name, size, and type allowing them to find the right breed for their lifestyle and living arrangements.

Commenting on the launch, Kellie Ceccarelli said: “Dogs make a great addition to the home but it’s important to help potential owners ensure that the breed they choose is suited to them.

"Puppies might look small but some dogs like the Saint Bernard can grow to a large size and therefore aren’t suitable for flats or smaller homes.

"Others, like Huskies and Border Collies, require a lot of exercise so aren’t the best choice for those who are away a lot in the day or are less mobile.

"By helping to support customers with sound advice you’ll not only ensure a happy and healthy relationship between the owner and their dog but also pet welfare.

“In order for dogs to thrive it’s important that they are looked after in the best way possible. This involves owners giving them the care they need, exercising them regularly, ensuring they see the vet when needed, and providing them with a 100% complete and balanced diet that offers high quality chicken or lamb as its principle protein source, providing visible benefits with a lifelong impact, from puppy through to senior years.”

Eukanuba’s premium nutrition offers 100% complete and balanced diet tailored to suit various breeds, life stages, and lifestyles for visible benefits that last a lifetime.

Protect mans’ best friend from lungworm
Nematode treatment from BASF will help protect dogs from this devastating disease

“Lungworm can be a devastating disease for dogs.  We believe that by using nematodes to protect your garden against slugs, you are also protecting your dogs from lungworm at the same time.”

Slugs remain one of the most prolific pests in the garden, and their damage can extend far beyond destroying your flowers and vegetables. These slimy pests can also carry the dreaded lungworm parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated.

Some dogs deliberately eat the parasites but they can also be ingested from foraging in undergrowth, eating grass, carrying around outside toys such as balls and rubber bones and when the parasites have attached themselves to outside water and food bowls.  They can also simply stick to dogs’ coats.

In order to provide you dog with the safest of environments whilst in the garden, it is vital to try and remove the threat of the lungworm parasite, and one of the most effective ways of doing this is removing slugs from the garden.

Until now, most slug control methods have been identified as being potentially harmful to dogs and other household pets.  The biological nematodes used in Nemaslug, on the other hand, seek out and destroy slugs, and only slugs, and can be used safe in the knowledge that they will cause no harm to anything else in your garden, including your dog. In fact, nematodes are so safe they can even be kept in your own fridge.

“Lungworm can be a devastating disease for dogs.  We believe that by using nematodes to protect your garden against slugs, you are also protecting your dogs from lungworm at the same time.” says Gavin Wood from BASF. This biological pest control is fast and effective, and is simply watered on to plants and soil where slugs are present.

TV Vet Marc Abraham, or ‘Marc the Vet’ as he is more commonly known, explains, “Lungworm relies greatly on slug and snail hosts in order to grow and develop, and it's from ingesting these (or even just licking their trails or infected water from bowls left outside) that disease transmission may occur.

“So the more contact our dogs have with infected slugs and snails, the more likely this often fatal disease is rapidly spread.”

Nemaslug is available exclusively online.

You can follow Nemasys on Twitter
@BASF_Nemasys_UK and find them on Facebook by searching for @BASF.Nemasys.UK

Marc Abraham, or ‘Marc the Vet’ as he is more commonly known, is a practicing veterinary surgeon, author, and animal welfare campaigner based in Brighton, England.

New look, new Glee

As we head towards Glee 2017, the show’s branding and creative and has been updated once again, creating a new look that is bolder, brighter and brimming with freshness...

With a rich 40 year plus history, it’s safe to say that Glee – the leading annual trade exhibition for the garden and outdoor living retail industry – has witnessed somewhat of a style evolution over the last four decades. Now, as we head towards the 2017 show, the show’s branding and creative and has been updated once again, creating a new look that is bolder, brighter and brimming with freshness.

Rolled out across Glee marketing collateral, dedicated website and throughout the show itself, the new branding is reflective of the changes taking place at the exhibition. Following a continued period of growth, Glee’s proposition is developing to meet the ever-evolving needs of the market which it represents. The new look has been designed to breathe new life into Glee, creating a visual backdrop that is both modern and relevant, and unlike anything that the show has seen before.

The inspiration for the innovative design came from leading trend forecasters, WGSN’s latest research. From the colours that will be ‘in’ throughout the coming season, to creating a look that packs a punch, Glee’s new creative is set to inspire and excite both exhibitors and visitors alike.

Featuring a bold new colour palette of the latest pantone colours, the new logo will be supported by new sector specific logos, designed to make navigating the various aspects of the show much easier. The overall branding also benefits from using photographic negative images that together with the new colours create a real eye-catching and contemporary design.

Glee’s Event Director, Matthew Mein, said: “Glee is changing; it’s growing and maturing.  The last few years have been a period of notable change for the exhibition, and now felt like the right time to launch the show with a brand-new look and feel, featuring a design that feels both relevant, timely and modern. Glee’s proposition regarding both its added-value show features and new product innovation is very much focussed on latest trends, and we wanted to carry this theme across all aspects of our planning. It’s a very different look for Glee, but I believe it is reflective of the evolution that garden retailing is currently undertaking, and I hope that our exhibitors and visitors will like the changes as much as we do.”

To view Glee’s new look be sure to visit the exhibition’s newly launched website – www.gleebirmingham.com. User-friendly, and featuring the latest product information via its ‘great products’ link, the new website makes it even easier for suppliers and retailers to optimise their Glee journey both in the lead up to and during the September show. A new FAQs section will also arm exhibitors and visitors with all the information they will need to maximise their time at the show.

Matthew added: “Gleebirmingham.com is an essential part of Glee’s year-round offering, and offers a number of benefits from planning your visit to showcasing the latest product innovations, the website has been stripped back and updated to create not only a visual feast but also a tool that is easy to navigate, providing a 365-day resource for the garden retail industry.”

Glee is the UK’s leading garden and outdoor living trade retail show, focussing on building year-round profits within core product categories including Garden Care, Landscaping & Garden Decoration, Outdoor Entertainment, Pet Products, Speciality Food and Catering, Home, Gift and Clothing, Plants and a dedicated Retail Experiences section. Each year the show attracts thousands of buyers from top retailers, such as leading UK garden centres, builders’ merchants, multiple retailers, and DIY stores. To keep up-to-date on all the latest news log onto www.gleebirmingham.com or call 020 3033 2160 to find out about exhibiting.

The Dog Treat Company took the unprecedented step to choose the UK’s most influential fine food exhibition for top-drawer artisanal food & drink fayre for humans to showcase its next generation of dog treats and branded pouches.

Having only recently moved into its purpose-built pet treat bakery nestled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, DTC has been working to create a top-notch dog treats range that can build upon its online and independent pet store success, establishing a significant ‘pawhold’ in alternative food and drinks venues where food-loving dog lovers congregate.

Kizzy 'calms down' and passes KC Bronze test
CSJ receive testimonials every day from delighted customers but the message from Donna Waring about her stressed and barking puppy Kizzy stood out as dog training classes had refused to help because Donna is totally blind...
CSJ receive testimonials every day from delighted customers but the message from Donna Waring about her stressed and barking puppy Kizzy stood out as dog training classes had refused to help because Donna is totally blind.

Other dogs barking at Kizzy had caused her to retaliate and bark back, which then escalated into a fear of small dogs and she would bark every time she passed one.

Donna worked hard with her by introducing her to dogs of various sizes and putting her on CSJ’s acclaimed Calm Down! herbal supplement.

When she finally found a dog club willing to allow them to attend Donna told CSJ: “I took her along and all my hard work and Calm Down had done its stuff. She was absolutely fine and just barked twice the whole of the time we were there.”

The following week the group were doing a Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze test and Donna entered Kizzy just for practice…but she passed!

Donna told CSJ: “This is the best calming product I have ever tried. Don’t get me wrong, you have to put the work in. But if you work hard and use the product in conjunction, you can achieve a lot.”

Mystery campaigner gives out free poop bags
A mystery campaigner is behind a one-man mission to clean up a path covered in dog mess by appealing to owners' better nature with a home-made sign, and even supplying them with free bags to clear up after their pets...
A mystery campaigner is behind a one-man mission to clean up a path covered in dog mess by appealing to owners' better nature with a home-made sign, and even supplying them with free bags to clear up after their pets.

The campaigner, thought to be a fed-up local, has created the home-made sign, complete with free bags for pet owners to clear up after their dogs in the village of Overseal, South Derbyshire.

The path off Woodville Road in the village has been a well-known hot spot for problems with dog mess, but the mystery sign is thought to be having an impact as problems there have started to improve, say locals.

The sign, mounted on a pole, has wire threaded through which has a role of black bags for dog owners to use to clear up after their pet if they get caught without one.

The sign, printed on a large white board, and its friendly wording has certainly struck a chord with pet owners who use the path. It invites pet owners to 'please take a poo bag' having warned about the dangers of dog mess causing worms and other nasties for other pooches.

And there is even a message to dogs which reads: "Attention dogs: grr, bark, woof."
