An award-winning independent pet shop has come up with a 10-point plan that can help small businesses combat the challenge of superstores and grocery outlets.
Pets Korner in Stamford, which took silver in the UK Pet Retailer of the Year category at last year’s PetQuip Awards, is run by husband-and-wife team Tony and Sandra Sharpe.
They also own Tails 'n' Whiskers in Oakham (pictured above), and have been judges of the New Products Awards at PATS Telford and Sandown.
“We are more than just a pet shop,” say the couple. “Our aim is to support Stamford and Oakham pet owners so they can give their pets exemplary care and attention.
“We are committed to provide all our customers with the advice they need on pet food, pet accessories, and all other pet supplies.”
Here’s their 10-point plan for independent pet store success:- The shop should be clean, tidy and merchandised into categories.
- Product knowledge is paramount. Make sure all staff has that product knowledge.
- Offer exceptional customer service, making sure you know your customers and their pets.
- Find products unique to your shop in your area.
- Get behind new products.
- Use companies that offer in-store demos to promote their products.
- Don’t be afraid to be different.
- Offer a loyalty scheme.
- If your shop isn’t close to a car park, offer a free local delivery service.
- A lot of suppliers are happy to share their knowledge with you, so create good relationships with them – it benefits everyone.
Sandra and Tony Sharpe look for new products to stock in their shop.

Pets Emporium is a well established business of over 35 years.
It's situated in the beautiful coastal area of North Norfolk in the village of Snettisham.
The shop is in a good location, is well presented with quality fixtures and fittings, holding a wide variety of food and accessories all merchandised to a high standard.
We have a loyal customer base throughout the year – the area is very dog friendly, with many hotels, holiday parks and second home owners. It all adds up to being a very busy area.
There are opportunities to re-establish boarding which was very viable and a profitable part of the business, and having the pet shop alongside makes it a good proposition.
It is a large detached property. The downstairs consists of shop, WC , staff room, two store rooms, kitchen and office. It has a spacious flat with kitchen, dining area, large lounge, master bedroom with en-suite, double bedroom and shower room. Outside there are large gardens, a garage and out buildings, and the property has ample customer parking.
It is a lovely life style business – the reason for sale is purely personal.

With still over five months to go before opening its doors to visitors, PATS Telford is set to be a ‘sell out’ event with 81% of stand space already booked.
It will be the second year that PATS takes place at Telford International Centre, and over 140 companies have already confirmed they will be exhibiting on Sunday and Monday, September 25-26.
The high demand for stand space for PATS Telford comes on the back of a successful show at Sandown Park last month.
Organiser Annie Foord said: “We’re finding that companies have wanted to book their Telford stands early to avoid disappointment. A number of exhibitors have told us they’ve signed up because of the success of Sandown in March. The feedback we received was tremendous and it just proves the pet industry is right behind the PATS exhibitions.”
Nine companies, who exhibited at PATS Sandown, will be making their Telford debuts. For All Dog Kind had a successful launch at last month’s event, winning the Best Grooming Product award, and Laura Redstone admits: “It was a great show and the PATS team made us feel very welcome. We’re now looking forward to Telford.”
So far a total of 19 companies, including three from overseas, will be exhibiting at a PATS show for the first time when they appear at Telford.
The First Class Pet Company Ltd is a new company with a range of foods specifically targeted at smaller dogs and fussy cats. “Exhibiting at PATS is the perfect way to meet the key players in the Industry and to develop relationships with our customers,” says director Jim Weston.
And Anwen Gardner, of HJ Lea Oakes, states: “We have previously visited PATS with our retail stores, and this year we are excited to have a trade stand. We have recently launched some new wild bird and poultry feeds which we will be showcasing at Telford.”
A visit to PATS Sandown convinced Richard Blundell, of Casa Grande Ltd, that the September show was right to exhibit the company’s collection of pet related gifts. “We sell coasters, key-rings and fridge magnets with pet images, and can’t wait to share them with the wider pet industry later in the year.”
Only Dogs Allowed is the exclusive UK and European distributor for Natural Dog Company, who produces a range of natural, organic and vegan-friendly health care products for dogs. “We are hoping PATS will support our growth to have these products more easily available in even more retail stores, veterinary practices and groomers,” admits Logan Bowie.
Although PATS Telford is only in its second year it has quickly established itself as an important date in the international pet trade calendar with an increasing number of overseas companies wishing to attend the event as both exhibitors and visitors.
AB7 Group is a 40-year-old French veterinarian laboratory and manufacturer of innovative pet care lines, including repellents, specific treatments, anti-stress, and grooming products. “We have chosen to exhibit at PATS to develop trustworthy and long-term commercial relationships with UK distributors, and also to present our latest innovations," says François Bruckner.
KW Dog & Cat Products, from Denmark, is another company with more than 40 years’ experience. “KW is initiating a market launch into the highly competitive UK retail market. We know that the customers love our system of grooming products – we believe that PATS is the place to get the professional people on board,” comments Martin Herluf.
As well as seeing an unrivalled array of new pet products and speaking to top suppliers and manufacturers, visitors to PATS Telford will also be able to witness demonstrations from the country’s leading dog groomers and listen to talks from prominent industry figures.
Parking is free at the Telford International Centre, and everyone will receive free tea and coffee, and a free show catalogue.
PATS Telford in September is the only place to see the whole pet industry and all the latest products under one roof, and is designed to cater for both pet retailers and garden centres.
A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.

Television coverage during Crufts has created a surge of interest in the American-made Nose-It! K-9 Pet Ball, distributed in the UK by AmPet Products.
Sales and Marketing Director Alex Wilson and his Siberian Husky Arapahoe made their television debut on Channel 4 discussing ways to help mentally stimulate dogs.
“The Nose It! Ball was a big hit at Crufts and it was great to see Arapahoe demonstrate the toy on national television,” said Alex. “This is one of the most exciting dog toys on the market and I use it extensively with clients’ dogs as well as distributing them to pet retailers throughout the UK.
“There has been huge interest since the TV appearance, especially with retailers visiting our stand at PATS Sandown.”
The Nose-It! K-9 Pet Ball is a ‘toy with purpose’, keeping pets engaged, moving and entertained for hours. It is designed with an intuitive one-roll-at-a-time design which keeps pets in control and rewards them as they ‘nose-it’ around.
Besides being super interactive, it helps channel a pet’s energy, anxiety, boredom or bad behavior, making the toy a fun, purposeful and entertaining product. It can also be useful to slow down fast eater.
Jim Ruder, who manufactures the ball in America, said: “We are very excited that the ball is selling well in the UK. Here in the US the canine version is one of a range of Nose-It! Balls that includes a separate range for horses and one for use in zoos. This is a wonderful product to help lower the stress level of dogs and also be part of a pet’s overall wellness programme.”

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary has taken over a popular pet shop in Ingatestone, Essex, with all the proceeds going towards the running of the welfare centre.
Alan Pudney owned Ingatestone Pet Shop for 22 years but has called time on his career at the age of 73.
He handed the keys over to the Brentwood-based sanctuary, who held its grand opening on Saturday when Sid the Skunk welcomed customers.
Hopefield manager Lianne Angliss said: "We had been planning and working hard for weeks. Everything we make from the pet shop goes towards the sanctuary and it was something we always wanted to do."
She added: "We opened up a little shop on the site at the sanctuary but when this came up it was too good an opportunity to not take up.”
Mr Pudney said he was originally hesitant to bring an end to his career as a shop owner and farmer but made the right choice in handing over the keys to Hopefield.
He said: "I haven't been retired long but I will be going on holiday soon, as I don't like twiddling my thumbs.
"It has been enjoyable down at the shop meeting customers and hopefully I have given them good service over the years.
"I have some nice retirement cards."
Mr Pudney, who celebrates his 74th birthday next month, was pleased to see Hopefield's interest in the shop and is confident they will be successful for years ahead.

Chuckit! has launched a national competition called the Chuckit! Challenge and is encouraging retailers to rally their customers to get involved and be in with a chance to win a dog-friendly holiday in the UK...
Could Oskar from Oskar Media win the Chuckit! Challenge?
Chuckit! has launched a national competition called the Chuckit! Challenge and is encouraging retailers to rally their customers to get involved and be in with a chance to win a dog-friendly holiday in the UK.
The Chuckit! Challenge, which was launched at Crufts 2016 and promoted to retailers at PATS Telford, asks consumers to send pictures and videos of their dogs playing with Chuckit! toys to its Facebook page.
With a host of great prizes up for grabs, including toys, doggy hampers and the top prize of a dog-friendly UK holiday worth £1000 from leading pet lifestyle website Pets Pyjamas, the brand is hoping to give back to its loyal audience.
Attracting a high number of entries already, the competition, headed up by a panel of expert judges including a panellist from Pets Pyjamas, the Editor of Your Dog Magazine, Jodie Forbes the award winning dog trainer and Emma Bearman a professional canine photographer, will come to a head in June this year when three selected finalists will be put to a public vote.
Once the three finalists are announced, Chuckit! will then be on the hunt for retailers in the local areas to support their finalist by getting involved in local press activity and encouraging voting through special in store promotions.
Steve Brown, Managing Director of Pedigree Wholesale, distributors of Chuckit! in the UK, comments: “We’re always looking for ways to involve our loyal retailers in fun consumer activities, and the Chuckit! Challenge is a great way for retailers to not only strengthen their relationship with local customers, but also give them the opportunity to raise their company profile in the local press.”
All details about the Chuckit! Challenge, including entries, the judges and finalists can be found on the Chuckit! Facebook page, and updates can also be found on the Chuckit! blog.
Retailers can also visit http://www.petproducts.co.uk to find out more information on stocking Chuckit!.

Devon-based business and artisan operation The Dog Treat Company has agreed to supply its full range of six top-selling dog treats, packed with panache and nutritional value, to Pets Corner.
The intriguingly named range of doggy nibbles, which may conjure up the odd wry smile, include Take my Dog Breath Away, Run Free and Fabulous Fur. Using only human-grade ingredients they steer clear of any ‘back-of-the-barn’ meat derivatives, added salt, sugar, dyes or cheap fillers.
The beautifully presented and sumptuous gift boxes and tins, that any discerning dog would be happy to receive, are packed full of thoughtfully selected ingredients including pumpkin seeds, free-range eggs, organic coconut oil and camomile, which offer a whole host of health benefits to canine consumers.
Each beneficial bite-sized nibble gives a glimpse of a business that has been conscientiously created to provide dogs with all the pleasure they would expect from a top notch, high quality treat without any of the nastiness or dubious ingredient integrity.
The brainchild of Joe and Jane Halliwell, The Dog Treat Company aims to bring a little flair to a dog’s snack time.
Joe said: “The word treat is often taken out of context and seen as a momentary lapse from sensible thinking to give one’s pet something naughty that lacks any nutritional balance or ‘real’ ingredients.
“Our bite-sized nibbles offer something out of the ordinary that provides real pleasure to pets with all the benefits of nutritious and natural ingredients so they are a great excuse to treat your pet more often.”
Initially on sale in eight of Pets Corner’s stores at Biggin Hill, Hitchin, Hove, Salisbury, Stratford upon Avon, Peterborough, Windlesham and Windsor from mid-May, with plans to roll out to the rest of the UK, The Dog Treat Company’s full range of 100g tins will retail at £5.99 each.

Eukanuba is responding to changing consumer shopping habits by introducing a new 12kg format in their dog dry offering. The aim is to help support retailers with on-shelf price positioning.
With 10-15kg bags of food now worth 45% of dog food sales in the UK*, Eukanuba has responded with the introduction of a 12kg dry offering at a lower price point to support retailers in achieving stronger sales in the category.
Eukanuba’s whole range including Puppy, Adult, Mature & Senior, Light/Weight Control and Breed Specific will all be available in 12kg formats from April 1st 2016. These varieties have experienced the biggest shift in consumers opting for smaller format options, which is why Eukanuba is providing a 12kg option in these SKU’s.
The new format has a recommended retail price of £42.99-49.99 depending on specific product (price is at the sole discretion of the retailer). The new format and pricing will be supported through dedicated point of sale marketing materials to further support retailers in their communications to customers on shelf and in-store.
Julie Nottage, Pet Specialty Channel Leader for Eukanuba, commented: ‘’We are constantly reviewing market and consumer trends to ensure that we respond to be able to provide retailers with the best products to bolster premium sales within the pet food category.
"We feel that the new format will provide independent, specialist and national retailers with a competitive product offering and will be appealing to consumer with a lower absolute price point. The promotional price and POS materials will further support sales and encourage more consumers to trade up to a more premium product.’
“At Eukanuba, we believe in feeding pet’s premium nutrition with only the best, highest-quality animal proteins. That’s why we use chicken or lamb – not vegetables – as the principal source of protein in our foods.”

The new Chevron Wild Bird Feeder from Supa Ltd created lots of interest when it was launched to the pet trade at PATS Sandown 2016.
The distinctive feeder has a number of innovative features, which make it a welcome addition to this growing sector of the market.
Supa Ltd is finding that an increasing number of households is encouraging wildlife, particularly birds, into their gardens, and is excited by the prospects of this new launch.
The feeder has a metal body that has reversible plastic windows, which can be changed very easily from either dispensing general seed mixes and sunflower hearts to a Niger seed feeder.
The tray has an integral metal base tray that ensures no food falls on the floor, and therefore is a great way of discouraging vermin in the garden.
Another user-friendly feature is the fact the lid of the feeder just lifts up to allow both easy filling and easy cleaning.
The Chevron Wild Bird Feeder comes in a contemporary blue colour, and as well as being attractively designed it is practical, versatile and easy to use.
Chris Goodlad, Managing Director of Supa Ltd, said: “The Chevron Wild Bird Feeder is an exciting addition to our range”.
“It certainly created a lot of interest at PATS Sandown with retailers being impressed by both its attractive design and functionality. We have high hopes for this new launch.”

PFMA welcomes new chairman
The Pet Food Manufacturers' Association (PFMA) has welcomed its new Chairman, Peter Kersh, who is Managing Director or World Feeds...
The Pet Food Manufacturers' Association (PFMA) has welcomed its new Chairman, Peter Kersh, who is Managing Director or World Feeds.
Mr Kersh takes over from Mary Sharrock of Nestlé Purina Petcare following the completion of two successful years.
He became involved in World Feeds to pioneer fish nutrition, improve the way fish are fed in aquariums and to further develop the industry. He brings 11 years’ experience in the aquatics sector and he will be the first PFMA Chairman with an aquatics background.
Talking of his ambitions for the role, Mr Kersh said: “My aims as Chairman of the PFMA are to continue the success and hard work of Mary Sharrock, previous chairman, in developing an organisation which very positively represents its members and is at the forefront of the pet food industry, to develop our role in FEDIAF, the European Federation, and to increase awareness of fish and other small animals (not to the detriment of dog and cat I hasten to add!).”
It is an exciting and busy time for the PFMA as Mr Kersh elaborates: “There are some major issues on the table – sustainability, obesity, education – which we need to continue to address pro-actively which is the very essence of the PFMA. Representing a small member company and in a minority animal sector I’m very proud and honoured to be Chairman of an ever developing organisation which is the PFMA.”

MedicAnimal, Europe’s leading online pet healthcare retailer, has launched its new ‘Fugly’ marketing campaign to customers.
‘Fugly’, an abbreviation of ‘Fabulously Ugly’, uses images of pets of different shapes and sizes, in funny and quirky situations.
The campaign aims to build on MedicAnimal’s founding principles, promoting the need for owners to look after their pets on the inside as well as the outside, to avoid feeding them low-quality food, and to make sure they are aware of basic healthcare tips for their companion’s well-being
The campaign will be running on YouTube, Facebook, online and across the London Underground.
Camille Genevard, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Our intention is to create a fun and thought provoking campaign to encourage owners to think about the health of their pets and their well-being. For example, a lot of people don’t realise that low quality food in particular is simply not good for their pets or that you need to brush your pet’s teeth.
“One of the ways to get that message across was to make sure our ad shows a wide, diverse range of pets.
"We want to make sure owners remember this message and continue to celebrate their pets, whether little or large, old or young, fluffy or furry. This goes to the very heart of our campaign. We also want to reflect to the reality and variety of pet ownership up and down the country.
"Care with A Conscience is at the heart of everything we do, and we’ve been working very hard to make proper pet care products affordable for almost a decade.”
