Pet companies get excited about PATS Sandown

PATS Sandown is gearing up for another memorable exhibition as more than 140 exhibitors get set to showcase a record number of new products at the event on Tuesday and Wednesday, (March 21-22)...

PATS Sandown is gearing up for another memorable exhibition as more than 140 exhibitors get set to showcase a record number of new products at the event on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 21-22.

The two-day show is creating a buzz of excitement in the pet industry with companies eager to unveil their latest launches for the new season.

The Surrey and Esher Halls at Sandown Park will be packed with stands showcasing innovative new products, and visitors to the show will be greeted by a host of new faces as well as PATS regulars.

The positive mood amongst exhibitors was summed up by Pet One, a new exhibitor at PATS Sandown.

Managing Director Mark Winter said: “We are very excited to be presenting our Pet One and Avi One brands to retailers in the South for the very first time. PATS is the ideal platform for us to do this in an effective manner. Pet and Avi One have long been successful brands in other countries but have never been rolled out by the group in the UK.”

Beaphar is celebrating its 75th anniversary at PATS Sandown this year, and Marketing Communications Executive Vicky Le Fanu commented:It’s an exciting time for the company as we continue to strengthen relationships with new and existing customers. Our stand will be buzzing with activity, new products, exclusive show deals, prize draws and much more.”

Beco Pets is gearing up for its biggest PATS show ever following the recent successful launch of Beco Food for Dogs. Toby Massey, Beco Pets' co-Founder, said: “The widespread international interest in our new range is very exciting. It's great to see so many people joining what we call 'The Meat-Meal-Free Revolution’.”

SnuggleSafe exhibited their pet accessories at PATS Telford and were so impressed the company are showcasing their products at Sandown for the first time. Director Chris Kavallares said: “SnuggleSafe see PATS as a great platform to showcase our fresh new product innovations, especially as Spring is around the corner."

Armitage Pet Care have lined up an impressive list of ‘show-only’ deals for their retail customers, and the company’s Tina Cockayne added: “We’re really looking forward to PATS Sandown, where we will be showcasing lots of fantastic new products for 2017 and our amazing new look Christmas range.”

Marriages like to theme their stand, having taken on characters from Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean at past shows, and this year will be no exception. Lisa Osborne, of Marriages, said: “We are all really looking forward to another PATS show and yes we have once again themed our stand. To give you a clue we’ll be delivering a Royally good performance.”

Hertford Shelving have exhibited at every PATS Sandown show and MD Steve Lodge said: “It’s a great place for meeting new customers as well as catching up with my existing customers. I have high expectations of it being a great show this year.”

Pettex are another regular exhibitor as Steve Bolton explained: “We always look forward to PATS as it’s a great place to meet new and existing customers in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s our window of opportunity to showcase our products to the UK and overseas pet trade under one roof.”

One of PATS Sandown’s most popular features is the New Product Showcase, which continues to grow in size. Because of its importance it will have a new and larger home in the Surrey Hall’s Brasserie Bar in 2017.

The record number of more than 200 entries will be judged by a panel of retailers for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, and the results will be announced and promoted throughout the halls for the rest of the exhibition.

PATS Sandown will see the return of the Grooming Workshops by popular demand after a two-year absence at the Surrey venue, and there will also be a full programme of free seminars during both days of the show.

To help make the visitor experience even more enjoyable and rewarding, both the Surrey and Esher Halls have their own entrances and registration points, with visitors benefitting from free show entry, free parking, a free catalogue and many special offers.

There will also be a wide range of food available from all the various outlets and all visitors will receive a free cup of tea or coffee voucher, which will be redeemable all day. Those arriving before 10.30am will also get a free breakfast voucher.

Ten extra large Koi Carp and one Sturgeon were stolen from the display pond at Squire’s Garden Centre in Badshot Lea, near Farnham on Friday, March 10. Intruders broke in late on Friday evening, and took the fish worth a total of £7,725.

The Koi Carp are between 22”-26” in length (which is over half a metre). They were selected in Israel for their quality by Squire’s Pets & Aquatics Manager, and then carefully imported from Israel to Squire’s in Badshot Lea.

Deputy Chairman Sarah Squire commented: “We are all absolutely devastated that this theft has happened, and are very concerned about the welfare of the fish, as they require a large pond or facility with well-filtered oxygenated water.

"Pet welfare is at the top of our agenda at Squire’s. We urge people to come forward if they have any information.”

If you know anything about this theft then get in touch with Surrey Police by calling 101 or email waverley@surrey.pnn.police.uk.

Budget is a disaster for pet stores, says industry chief
Steve Fowler, the newly appointed chair of the Pet Industry Federation, has spoken out against the recent budget, calling it a ‘disaster’ for small high street pet stores...
Steve Fowler, the newly appointed chair of the Pet Industry Federation, has spoken out against the recent budget, calling it a ‘disaster’ for small high street pet stores.

Referring to the announcement last week by the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, that business rates would not be reduced for small businesses, Steve criticised the budget explaining that it did very little for beleaguered pet stores.

Steve, former MD of PamPurred Pets with 35 years’ experience in pet retail, said: "Whilst the government claims to support smaller, independent shops, decisions announced in last week’s budget clearly demonstrate that it is not a level playing field on the high street!

"Internet giants such as Amazon are paying far less in business rates per square foot than many of our ‘bricks and mortar’ retail members.

"The government really does need to sort this mess out and organise a separate system of business taxation for the retail sector, perhaps linked to sales value, as has been the case for pubs."

He continued: "The current system of linking business rates to rent is in need of a complete over-haul and has been unfair for many years.

"If nothing is done, high street businesses will continue to feel enormous economic pressure, with the inevitable consequence that some will be forced to close down, eroding the lifeblood of town centres.

"PIF will be doing their utmost to try and encourage the Government to rethink and implement a fairer system," he concluded.

Pets at Home employs apprenticeship scheme graduates
Pets at Home has offered permanent employment to 10 young people who have successfully graduated from the company's Groom Room apprenticeship programme launched in January 2016...

Above: Rio, a Groom Room apprentice at the Southend Pets at Home store.

In January 2016 Pets at Home launched The Groom Room apprenticeship programme, offering over 100 places to young people, allowing them to learn the skills and techniques required to become a pet groomer.

The initial cohort group of 14 candidates have now come full circle, completing their apprenticeship programme, with 10 of the group being given permanent employment as grooming stylists within the Groom Room.

The scheme sees trainee stylists work towards a City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Animal Care (Grooming Pathway) and a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care (Dog Grooming). Each apprentice completes the scheme as a fully qualified grooming stylist and the intention is to offer a permanent position within one of the 260 plus Groom Room salons nationwide.

Jo Fuller, Group Apprenticeship Project Manager at Pets at Home said: “At Pets at Home we’re passionate about the development and training of our colleagues through every stage of their career, so the apprenticeship programme is a natural fit. We are proud to be able to offer opportunities for people to start a career where they will be given first class training, be nurtured and supported, with the offer of a permanent role at the end.

"In February our first group of 14 apprentices came to the end of their programme, and we are really pleased to be able to appoint 10 of those individuals into full time positions in our salons."

Ellie Winston, 21, a current apprentice at the Gateshead store said; “I chose to apply for the scheme after leaving a call centre role I wasn’t passionate about and wanting to make the most of my love of animals. I entered onto the scheme with no previous experience and found that learning for an entire year whilst still earning money, provided the security and progression I was after.

My partner is an apprentice within the finance sector and we both feel apprenticeships are the easiest way to progress up the career ladder.”

The programme runs for a year and one day during which time apprentices will be required to complete internal training, which will include hands on experience and practical assessments.

The Pets at Home grooming apprenticeships are currently only available within England however there are plans to roll this out across the UK.

Bring Your Dog To Work Day returns for 2017

The fourth national Bring Your Dog To Work Day has been confirmed for 2017. Event founder HOWND has announced that Britain’s best day out for dogs will take place on Friday 23rd June and are urging UK businesses to get involved.

The fourth national Bring Your Dog To Work Day has been confirmed for 2017.

Event founder HOWND has announced that Britain’s best day out for dogs will take place on Friday 23rd June and are urging UK businesses to get involved.

As well as promoting the benefits of bringing dogs into safe work environments, the goal of the event is to raise money for animal welfare.

The two official charities for 2017 are All Dogs Matter, which rescues and rehomes hundreds of dogs each year in the UK and Animals Asia, a charity foundation that saves dogs and cats from the corrupt meat trade in China and Vietnam.

A host of firms from across all UK industries are once again expected to take part in 2017 as official ‘Business Sponsors’.

“Many scientific studies have concluded that the presence of pets can substantially reduce a person’s stress level in the workplace. Increased job satisfaction, team cooperation and morale have all been reported in employees that spend the workday with their pets,” explains Jo Amit, co-founder of HOWND.

“If you own or run a business, you can participate by making an online donation to become a business sponsor.

“In return for a minimum donation of £50, your company’s logo and website link will be displayed on our website homepage. All the money raised will be split equally between All Dogs Matter and Animals Asia.”

Individuals can also make a donation whether they take their dogs to work or not. For a minimum online donation of £2, a picture of a person’s dog can be published in the ‘Dog With A Job Hall Of Fame’. Individuals that donate £5 or more online will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win £100s of goodies from our business sponsors.

Bring Your Dog To Work Day has become a recognised calendar event, taking the national press and social media by storm over the past three years.

This has led to the initiative claiming bronze and silver ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ accolades at the annual PetQuip Awards.

“We’ve enjoyed incredible PR results on a shoestring budget. The day has been featured on television and been the focus of a number of radio talking points,” adds Jo.

“There’s also been national coverage from the likes of The Guardian, Daily Mirror, Metro, Daily Express, The Telegraph, Waitrose Weekend, Sunday Post, The Times, Mashable and Fast Company.”

Celebrities have got involved too, with the likes of Ricky Gervais and ITV’s Loose Women tweeting their support. This has helped the #BringYourDogToWorkDay hashtag trend on Twitter in both 2015 and 2016.

Participants in this year’s Bring Your Dog To Work Day will also have the opportunity to contribute to its first official movie.

Through an award-winning app called Seenit, those who take part can join the BYD2017 project, before recording and uploading clips of their dogs at work. These clips will be used to create a short film.

Pooch & Mutt’s grain-free functional food range is made up of a 45% single protein source, with natural ingredients and supplements 'built in'.

Function is at its core, for example our mobility Move Easy food is made with Salmon, as salmon is rich in omega 3, which helps joints. These powerful, active ingredients work very clearly to target current health concerns in the UK dog population such as weight gain, excitable behaviour, and bad breath.

The full product catalogue including their hugely popular Calm & Relaxed grain-free food and treat ranges are now available to purchase directly online. The Pooch & Mutt sales team will be showcasing the new order process at upcoming trade show PATS Sandown.

Forthglade’s Devon-made meals for dogs were a huge success at Crufts this year. Over 3,000 meals were eagerly snapped up by pet owners over the four-day event, for their dog’s to sample for dinner.

“Crufts certainly felt busier this year” said Gerard Lovell, Joint MD of Forthglade. “It was great to note a far higher level of awareness of both our brand and our reputation for using quality ingredients.

"Events such as Crufts always provide such a wonderful opportunity to meet dog owners and hear the positive effects that a natural Forthglade diet has on their pets - whether it be a glossier coat, improved behaviour or how an unwell dog has vastly improved in health.

"It’s been a great way to kick off this year’s event calendar as we’ve twenty more shows to attend this year”.

With PATS just a few days away, Forthglade is busy preparing for the launch of an exciting addition to it’s range of natural foods for dogs.

“There’s a lot planned for Forthglade this coming year, the team has been very busy preparing for our latest product launch.

"We’ve taken our time to launch our newest range of meals to ensure the very best ingredients were included in the recipes and that the high nutritional benefits of these quality foods was retained during a very gentle cooking process” said Lovell.

A rising star of the dog grooming world has been recognised at Crufts 2017.

Darcy Davis - daughter of Kelly Davis who serves as Director of the British Dog Groomers' Association - won second place in the under 12's Young Kennel Club (YKC) grooming competition last week.

Only six years old, and with a host of grooming awards already under her belt from the English Groomer Challenge and Cymru Groom, Kelly has been grooming dogs alongside her mum since the age of four.

“Darcy was so pleased to win second place. I think I’m going to need a new trophy cabinet soon,’ explains Kelly.

“Rico - Darcy’s dog - was bathed in HOWND’s cruelty-free certified Yup You Stink Conditioning Shampoo for months in the lead up to Crufts. It conditions perfectly, leaving Rico’s coat super clean, soft and smelling amazing.

"The formula is so gentle on our hands, which is especially important on Darcy’s young skin which can be susceptible to irritation. HOWND shampoo smells so good Kelly wants to use it on herself!”

“It was wonderful to watch Darcy compete,’ explains Jo Amit, the co-founder of HOWND. ‘We exhibited for the first time this year at Crufts, and the show proved to be a tremendous success for the brand.”

HOWND has been shortlisted in the ‘Product of the Year UK’ category for this year’s Liz Paul Awards taking place at MasterGroom 2017 in Peterborough.
Benyfit Natural set to launch new Mini recipes

Pet owners often struggle to find food that caters to the higher energy and fast metabolic rate of the ever-energetic smaller/toy breeds so Benyfit Natural has come up with the perfect solution - the new Benyfit Mini Range which will be launched at PATS Sandown...

It goes without saying that every dog regardless of age, size or breed should be fed a good diet to keep it in tip top condition, as the adage says, “you are what you eat!”

Much like humans, dogs need a sensibly balanced, nutritious diet that carefully fits around their lifestyles; and by feeding high quality ingredients with a good meat content you will ultimately end up with a happy, healthy dog; with good teeth, healthy soft skin, a shiny coat and the right body weight that is appropriate to their breed.

Owners of small dogs however, often struggle to find food that caters to the higher energy and fast metabolic rate of the ever-energetic smaller/toy breeds. Inspired to find a solution to this growing concern amongst smaller dog owners, industry specialists Benyfit Natural are proud to launch their all-new Benyfit Mini Range exclusively at PATS.

Based on their existing ranges, Benyfit Natural’s Mini’s combine appropriate amounts of animal protein, vegetables and botanicals in one complete recipe.

Benyfit Natual only uses the best human grade ethically sourced meat which comes from DEFRA approved farms and use muscle meat in all their ranges. The complete diets also contain ground bones, carrot, broccoli, swede, offal, flaxseed oil, kelp and herbs as well as raw eggs all of which offer a natural combination of vitamins, minerals, omega oils and amino acids to produce a healthy skin, coat, joints, thyroid and cell production as well as helping to support the immune system.

The meat in Mini’s is finely minced through a 6mm blade so it caters for small mouths and is available in  a selection of varieties which include tripe, chicken, turkey  and beef.

Mini’s are also available in life stage formats as well with a Puppy and Senior recipe in both chicken and turkey varieties with added Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the senior food for healthy joints.

The Premium Blend range contains a combination of venison, rabbit and turkey which is ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs. All varieties are designed to help maintain a healthy weight for a dog whatever its age, size or activity level.

Benyfit Natural has recently introduced two new diets that cater for dogs that suffer from specific dietary requirements. Meat Feast is ideal for dogs that suffer from yeast intolerance, itchy skin and hotspots.

Free from ingredients that can cause allergies and intolerances it is also suitable for dogs with diabetes. Sensitive is designed to cater for dogs with pancreatic problems and is low in fat and is ideal for dogs that suffer from renal issues or are prone to stones and Anal Furunculosis.

Diets are available in 200 g bowl shaped BPA free plastic tubs which are re-sealable, made from recycled material and are recyclable.

Benyfit Natural will be exhibiting this year at PATS. Visit their stand N16 where you can take part in a competition to win a free freezer packed with best sellers, sample the range and take advantage of show offers which include £100 worth of free extra food when you order a new freezer. Pet-ernity leave introduced at Pets at Home

Pets at Home is set to introduce a new scheme, Pet-ernity Leave, for its 8,200 colleagues in April.

The new scheme will mean that colleagues will be allowed one paid day off per year when they welcome a new dog, cat or horse into their family.

The scheme is being launched in April as part of a new range of flexible benefits, called ‘For all the times we share’ that help colleagues balance their work and home life, by giving paid time off to better manage some of life’s milestones.

Pet-ernity Leave is just one of a number of schemes being offered. This is in addition to the existing benefits of having a birthday day off, an extra week’s holiday when getting married, a charity dayeach year.

Chief Executive of The Pets at Home Group, Ian Kellett, said: “We want to help and support key events in a colleague’s life. We are also launching a ‘flying the nest day’ when a child leaves home, a ‘new roost day’ when you move home and a day’s holiday on your birthday.

“We know that if you have a new dog, cat or horse it can be quite stressful and to help with the settling in process that comes with welcoming a new pet into any family, we want to grant one day’s paid holiday to help support them. It fits into our ethos – we recognise the importance of pets.”

At Pets at Home, 95% of colleagues own a pet and it’s no different for the pets that are welcomed to the Handforth headquarters on a daily basis, where pets of all shapes and sizes join their owners at work.

In fact, more than 50 well behaved dogs are present in the office at any one time, from a Bernese Mountain dog to a German Shepherd and Red Toy Poodle, well behaved dogs of all different breeds and sizes are just part of a normal working day.

Don’t pick up dog poo – flick it into undergrowth instead, MP suggests
Dog walkers are being urged by a Tory MP not to bag up their pet's poo in the countryside - but to use a stick and flick it into the undergrowth instead...
Dog walkers are being urged not to bag up their pet's poo in the countryside - but to use a stick and flick it into the undergrowth instead.

Conservative MP Anne Main advocated the method during a Westminster debate this week as a way of reducing the number of plastic bags blighting the countryside.

Mrs Main says better signage is needed at the entrance of parks and open spaces so dog owners know what to do.

She says poo-filled bags hanging from trees are a nationwide problem.

Local authorities in England and Wales received some 73,824 complaints about dog fouling in 2014-15.

Mrs Main (pictured), MP for St Albans and the owner of a three-year old Lakeland Jack Russell Terrier called Sam, says the menace of poo-filled bags "is a massive problem" that is polluting the environment.

"The issue of bagging dog poo and hanging it on trees and fences has become a nationwide issue. Since I got the debate in parliament, I’ve had people from all over the country contacting me about problems in their area," she said.

"I want dog-owners to exercise common sense when dealing with their dog poo.  We need to discuss some kind of country code, and say that it is not acceptable to simply bag it up and throw in on a tree, or in people’s gardens, or to hang it on fences.

"I am very aware that dog excrement can carry diseases, and the concerns that farmers have for their livestock, but we need to have a common-sense approach that educates dog-walkers."

Mrs Main, who is raised the issue during a Westminster Hall debate on Tuesday, says many dog walkers start off with the best intentions, by leaving a bag in a tree on a track to pick up on the way home - but then forget to collect it.

She hoped ministers will press for better signage at the entrance to forest areas and parks with advice on dog poo disposal.

She also thinks the Forestry Commission-backed campaign for dog walkers to use a "stick and flick" the mess off the pathway and into the undergrowth, or cover it with leaves, is a more effective way of removing the mess.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates there are more than eight million dogs in the UK producing more than 1,000 tonnes of mess every day.

Anyone who fails to clear up after their dog can be issued with a fixed penalty notice. If the case goes to court, this could cost the owner or person in charge of the animal up to £1,000.

Appeal after guinea pigs dumped outside pet store
The Scottish SPCA have appealed to the public for information after two guinea pigs were abandoned outside a pet store in Falkirk...
The Scottish SPCA have appealed to the public for information after two guinea pigs were abandoned outside a pet store in Falkirk.

The guinea pigs, named Fred and George by staff, were left outside the town’s Pets at Home on Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for the animal charity said they had been well looked after but did have overgrown claws.

Anyone found guilty of abandoning an animal can be banned from keeping them for life.

Scottish SPCA Inspector Louise Seddon said:“The man that dumped them outside the pet store had asked the staff to take them and was advised that he should call back in a couple of days when they would hopefully have space available.

“Instead of taking this advice, he left the store before returning to leave these guineas near the entrance where they could have very easily been attacked by dogs.

“Luckily, a staff member found the Guinea pigs and called us.”

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

Great British Breakfast joins Sunday Lunch on Lily's Kitchen menu
Lily’s Kitchen is launching its Great British Breakfast tin (400g), giving pet parents the opportunity to extend their special weekend breakfast to their four-legged family.

Lily’s Kitchen is launching its Great British Breakfast tin (400g), giving pet parents the opportunity to extend their special weekend breakfast to their four-legged family.

With increasing numbers of owners sharing a meal time with their pet, occasion based recipes give parents the opportunity to give an exciting complete and balanced meal to their dog, safe in the knowledge that the natural ingredients are feeding their overall health.

Recent success of the Sunday Lunch tin (400g) showed a genuine appetite for recipes that are not only based on tasty human meals, such as Lamb Hotpot, but for recipes that help the whole family to enjoy a traditional meal time together. Breakfast is one of the nation’s favourite meal times and was a natural choice to add to the range alongside a top-seller Sunday Lunch.

The Great British Breakfast recipe is a delicious combination of mouth-watering, breakfast ingredients including venison sausage meat (which is high in protein and one of the leanest meats), haricot beans (packed with natural fibre to support a healthy heart) ham and eggs, topped with parsley for digestive support and Lily’s Kitchen’s signature healthy herb blend.

The novel protein mix of venison sausage meat, ham and egg adds a further point of difference from the rest of the Lily’s Kitchen 400g tin range, encouraging existing shoppers to buy this recipe alongside their current repertoire while also attracting new customers into the brand.

Like all Lily’s Kitchen recipes, the ingredients in our 400g tin have been chosen for their high nutritional content, helping to not just fill their tummy but support the health of their pet.

The natural nourishment provided within helps to promote a shiny coat, healthy skin, and good digestion. The product is hypoallergenic, natural and holistic, and contains NO rendered meats, animal derivatives, added fillers, artificial flavourings, sweeteners or preservatives.  It is also grain free, helping reduce bloating and wind.

CEO and Founder Henrietta Morrison, says: “Our pets are family and deserve to be included in our favourite mealtime moments. What better way to start the day than with a hearty and wholesome breakfast made with delicious ingredients.

"Being able to share occasions such as this with our pets is what consumers are looking for, which is why the humanisation trend is booming in the category. ”

The new Great British Breakfast recipe, RRP £2.49, is available to order from 21st March 2017 and will be sold in independent pet shops and on the Lily’s Kitchen website (www.lilyskitchen.co.uk).

The Pet Industry Federation has announced details of an extension of its member benefit business insurance, to now accommodate kennel and cattery members.

For the last three years, the Pet Industry Federation has successfully partnered with leading insurance broker Jelf, to provide peace of mind around issues and core risks faced by groomers, sitters, home boarders and walkers.

The package has now been enhanced to benefit PIF’s kennels and catteries to offer bespoke cover. PIF kennel and cattery members will receive protection around employers and public liability, animal theft, personal accident and loss of animal boarding licences and fees.

Nigel Baker, PIF CEO said: "Kennels and catteries represent a growing number of PIF members. They have very specific needs compared with other pet businesses, with some of the greatest responsibilities when it comes to animal care. So in this respect we are delighted to offer bespoke cover to achieve their business needs."

Policies are subject to terms and conditions, and each member’s specific requirements and circumstances.

If you would like to find out more about PIF’s membership benefits, as well as any of the other work that PIF is involved with, including qualifications and its new public-facing ‘mypetpeople’ website, speak to the PIF team on stand T1 at PATS Sandown between March 21-22.

If you are looking for specific insurance advice, there will also be a representative from Jelf on Wednesday 22nd March at PATS Sandown from 1pm onwards to discuss the new kennel and cattery product and any other insurance queries you may have.

New varieties are the recipe for success for ZiwiPeak
Natural Pet Products Ltd, distributors for New Zealand pet food brand ZiwiPeak, will be showcasing the brand’s new packaging and varieties at PATS Sandown (stand K1)...

Natural Pet Products Ltd, distributors for New Zealand pet food brand ZiwiPeak, will be showcasing the brand’s new packaging and varieties at PATS Sandown (stand K1).

For over 10 years New Zealand-based ZiwiPeak have been creating recipes for dogs and cats that bring together the best human-grade ingredients from the green, free range farms and blue, pristine southern oceans of New Zealand.

All the ingredients come from sustainable sources which are regulated by the New Zealand government.

As New Zealand is an island nation with strict bio-security there are no infectious animal diseases such as BSE (mad cow) or foot and mouth disease. This means that there are no GMO's, hormones or antibiotics in the meat content.

ZiwiPeak is free from low cost fillers and artificial ingredients that are thought to cause allergies such as colouring or preservatives. There is also no added sugar or salt in ZiwiPeak products.

ZiwiPeak’s slow, gentle, twin stage air-drying process crafts a food that is as nutrient dense and digestible as a completely raw diet but safe, clean to handle and can be stored for up to 21 months.

All of their air-dried dog food recipes start with 98% premium New Zealand meat, organs, bone and green-lipped mussel, a great natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin. To complete the remaining part of the recipe, they hand select essential vitamins and minerals, natural kelp, parsley, chicory inulin & lecithin for a complete & balanced diet.

The diet is available to buy in 4kg, 2.5kg, 1kg and 454g bags in Beef, Lamb and Venison varieties. Two new varieties are shortly to be launched, Blue Mackerel & Lamb and Tripe & Lamb.

All of ZiwiPeak’s Moist Dog Food follows the same tasty recipe as their air-dried food but with added moisture canned in small batches. Again the food is as nutrient rich as a completely raw diet but safe, clean to handle and can be stored for up to 3 years.

The canned food now uses chickpea as a natural binder and has NO Agar or TSPP binders. The food is available in Beef, Lamb, Tripe with two new additions, Blue Mackerel  & Lamb which is rich in omega oils and Tripe & Lamb.

On the cat food front, the ZiwiPeak recipe follows the same tasty formula as the dog food. The air-dried food is available to buy in 400g bags of Beef, Lamb, Venison and a new variety, wild caught New Zealand Blue Mackerel & Lamb which is high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. This new variety will be launched at PATS in ZiwiPeak’s new packaging and branding style.

ZiwiPeak also offers a Moist Cat Food that is canned in small batches in order to retain the moisture of the product, available in four varieties: Beef, Lamb, Venison and the new Blue Mackerel & Lamb.

ZiwiPeak is not only a good conditioning food helping to maintain a healthy skin, but is also excellent for cats that suffer with allergies, need to maintain the correct body weight  and for those cats that may suffer from digestive and renal disorders.

ZiwiPeak can be used as a complete diet or as a great alternative for cat and dog owners that feed a raw food diet for those times when it's not always convenient to prepare raw meat. ZiwiPeak is an affordable choice for cat and dog owners wanting to feed an excellent premium food to their pets.

ZiwiPeak is distributed by Natural Pet Products Ltd. For further information visit their website: www.naturalpetproductsltd.com, tel: 01926 883409 or email:sales@naturalpetproductsltd.com

PDSA vets save cat after boiling water attack

A beloved family cat was left scarred for life after suffering horrific burns when boiling water was poured over her head and back.

Seven-year-old Tuppence almost died following the incident, but has pulled through following intensive treatment from vet and nursing staff at PDSA’s Bournemouth Pet Hospital.

The white-and-black cat was rushed to the charity’s hospital in January by her elderly owner, Vivienne Percy (70) from Poole, after returning home soaking wet and in obvious shock.

PDSA Head Nurse, Stella Hughes, said: “When we first saw Tuppence, she was very wet and cold, had grazes over her body, and her ear tip was inverted.

“Initially we suspected she had been involved in a road traffic collision, but as the wounds started to develop it was clear she was instead suffering from serious burns. Her injuries were consistent with burns from boiling water, which is very worrying.

“We’re horrified that anyone might have done this intentionally to a helpless animal.  The pain and suffering Tuppence has gone through, and the worry for her owner is unimaginable.”

Tuppence’s wounds are still being managed by PDSA staff and she is making a steady recovery. She is receiving pain killers and antibiotics to keep her comfortable and prevent infection while she continues to heal.

Stella added: “Tuppence is responding well to treatment but extensive burns are always very difficult to manage. We initially feared we would have to amputate her right ear but we’re now hopeful we’ll be able to save it.

“We expect her to make a full recovery but she will be left with scarring and some of her fur may never grow back. We’re also unsure how the mental trauma of the incident will affect her in the long-term.”

Owner Vivienne, who is disabled, said she had been left traumatised by the attack on her beloved cat:

“I can’t understand why anyone would do this to her. I’ve had so many sleepless nights since this happened, it’s really upset me.

“Tuppence can’t go outside anymore because of her injuries, but PDSA have been amazing. They have been there for me and Tuppence when we needed them and I can’t tell you what that means to me.”

Anyone with information about the attack on Tuppence is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55170008963. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Chuckit! makes a splash with summer ‘Hydro’ range
Dog toy brand Chuckit! has launched an innovative new ‘Hydro’ range of dog toys, set to transform Summer adventures with a water absorbent core for constant hydration...

Dog toy brand Chuckit! has launched an innovative new ‘Hydro’ range of dog toys, set to transform Summer adventures with a water absorbent core for constant hydration.

Combining fun and function for Fido, the unique range, unlike any other on the UK market, is designed to keep parched pooches cool during the hottest summer months, without compromising on play time.

Benefitting from a unique ‘HydroSqueeze’ concept, the HydroSqueeze Duo Tug (Medium RRP, £15.99) HydroSqueeze ball (Medium RRP, £6.99) and HydroSqueeze Bumper (Medium RRP, £14.99) are reimagined versions of classic customer favourites - but with a refreshing new twist.

All of the ‘Hydro’ toys launching this Spring, boast Chuckit!’s first ever super absorbent foam centre, which has been designed to hold and slowly release cold water during play when the toys are squeezed, tugged or chucked!

Another cool addition to the Chuckit! ‘Hydro’ range, the HydroFreeze ‘fill and freeze’ ball (Medium, RRP £9.99) provides hours of chilled play time with its internal freezing core which slowly melts over time, releasing hydrating cold water and providing a fun new dynamic to your dog’s favourite fetch games.

As dogs lose more water during play, especially through panting in warmer temperatures, the ‘Hydro’ range gives peace of mind to owners that even whilst playing, their dog is constantly replenished without the need to halt play or carry cumbersome bowls and bottles on walks.

The durable rubber and polyester shells featured across the range also mean that, as well as having a splashing time this Summer, the robust toys will stand up to the challenge of paws and jaws all year round too.

Will Baggaley, Brand Manager for Chuckit!, comments: “After the success of our Max Glow range, we’re excited to be launching another seasonal range for customers, this time for Summer.

“The Hydro range promises something entirely new for customers looking to expand their pooch’s collection, not only catering to Fidos looking for a refreshing new way to have fun, but also ensuring dogs are safe, nourished and healthy during summer play with cool, hydrating toys.”

PetSafe's video promotes self-cleaning litter boxes
PetSafe has launched a new tongue-in-cheek digital campaign - ‘Catspiracy’ - to promote its line of self-cleaning litter boxes to UK pet owners...

PetSafe has launched a new tongue-in-cheek digital campaign - ‘Catspiracy’ - to promote its line of self-cleaning litter boxes to UK pet owners.

Centring on the ScoopFree Original Self-Cleaning Litter Box, the campaign features a two-minute film shot from a cat’s perspective that sheds light on why felines are convinced their owners have ulterior motives for scooping their waste.

In the satirical video, cats watch their owners’ odd behavioral shift after purchasing the time-saving and touch-free ScoopFree device, which sweeps waste and odours away once cats have used the box. The featured cats adopt numerous conspiracy theories, believing that humans must be harvesting their waste for their own devious reasons.

Angela Critchley, International Marketing Director for PetSafe Brand, said: “With this campaign we wanted to highlight the benefits of ScoopFree while creating something funny and engaging that would strike a chord.

"Cat owners dread having to scoop the litter box every day, so we thought it would be fun to look at things from a different perspective by imagining the feline conspiracies the litter box might spark in the cat world!”

The ScoopFree video and campaign debuts this week on Facebook and YouTube and can be viewed at https://youtu.be/Re24T2mvw9I.

The star of Catspiracy, the ScoopFree Original Self-Cleaning Litter Box, is the only self-cleaning litter box that uses disposable litter trays to provide hands-off convenience and unbeatable odour control.

The litter box can be left alone for weeks at a time and simply needs to be plugged in to operate.

The automatic rake system sweeps waste into the covered compartment and the specially-designed crystal litter is five times more effective at reducing odour than clay or clumping litters.

The RRP is £154.99.

Labrador dogs help interview new vets

A family of Labradors have been helping out at Edinburgh Napier University, where they were called in to put hopeful new student vets through their paces.

The students were competing for places on a vet nursing programme, but probably weren't expecting to see dogs on their interview panel!

The dogs had an important job to do, because vets need to be good at communicating with the animals they treat, so that they don't get scared or stressed.

Mum Tia, Dad Simba, and puppy Fern helped the human staff to put the students through their paces, to see who had the skills they need to be a great vet.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Napier University said: "The teaching staff watch to see who is most comfortable handling, talking to and playing with the dogs, because this will be an important skill for students to have if they go on to work as a vet nurse."
