Award-winning pet retailer says no to rawhide

Family-owned pet chain Just for Pets has just announced its transition to a more natural, sustainable approach to both products and practice, with the launch of its ‘No More Rawhide’ campaign — placing a ban on any future sales of rawhide products across the chain.

The pet retailer, who recently won ‘The Healthy Pet Guide’s Retailer of the Year 2022’, is known for putting animals’ health and wellbeing at the centre of every decision it makes, meaning there are no exceptions when it comes to rawhide.

With more pet owners on the search for healthy alternatives to rawhide, which averages at only 18% digestibility, Just for Pets Buyer, Leanne Blunn told us: “With so many healthy, natural and long lasting dog treats now available, we’ve recognised for a long time that to offer our customers the best for pet welfare, we have to be firm on what we won’t sell as well as what we do sell both in store and online.”

One of the healthy alternatives that Just for Pets has decided to stock in place of rawhide are No-Hide® Chews, created by Earth Animal. These award-winning chews are made with just six simple, natural ingredients: brown rice flour, eggs, olive oil, pineapple stem, banana and agar-agar (vegetable gelatine) — plus, one flavour-bursting, sustainably sourced protein. They’re the perfect choice for a tasty, long-lasting and natural chew for dogs (and cats).

Speaking about the benefits of No-Hide® Chews, Earth Animal’s in-house vet, Dr. Kris Hansen, told us: “No-Hides are an excellent alternative to rawhide. Not only do they provide mental stimulation, but they also increase physical health, burning excess energy, whilst promoting healthy teeth and gums.

“Rawhide chews are made from the hides of factory-farmed animals, an inhumane practice that also contributes to climate change. And, most rawhide is treated with bleach and synthetic chemicals and preservatives that can cause harmful side effects to dogs. Choosing a No-Hide® means choosing the healthiest, most humane option for animals.”

Dr. Bob and his wife Susan Goldstein, have been passionately pioneering a more holistic, humane, and sustainable way of preserving and enhancing the quality of life for animals, people, and the Earth for more than 40 years – they call this Another Way. In 2015, the No-Hide® Chew was introduced to do just that by combining a healthy formula, high-quality ingredients, and compassionate sourcing.

Will Baggaley, International Sales & Marketing Director at Earth Animal, added: “We’re delighted to collaborate with Just for Pets on its latest ‘No More Rawhide’ campaign. Opting for healthy, humane alternatives, like No-Hides, is a small but important step in reducing the demand and slowing its harmful impact on animals, people and the Earth.”

Tom Maltby, Brand Manager at Just for Pets, said “Earth Animal No-Hide® Chews offer our customers and their pets a genuine, long-lasting and healthy alternative to rawhide. The company's ethical standards are world-leading so it’s been a real pleasure working with them on the #NoMoreRawhide campaign.”

This is just the start for Just for Pets, with it pledging to supply a range of natural and sustainable products for its customers. The retailer hopes to encourage many other pet shops to get involved in this transition, ensuring that the products on offer across the UK have the pet's health considerations as the number one priority.

Jollyes celebrates Platinum Jubilee with free corgi grooming

Nationwide pet store Jollyes is offering a free pamper and groom for corgis in the month of June so they can celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style...

Nationwide pet store Jollyes is offering a free pamper and groom for corgis in the month of June so they can celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style.

A fan of Pembroke Welsh Corgis since she was a young girl, the Queen has helped to popularise the breed, which has become a symbol of her 70-year reign.

Grooming Spas can be found at Jollyes stores in Bedford, Belfast, Cannock, Dartford, Eccles, Gosport, Halifax, Ilkeston, Newry, Newtownabbey, Skegness, St Helens, Stevenage, Tonbridge, Wakefield and Wrexham.

Jollyes is also actively recruiting for dog groomers to join its team – with vacancies in St Helens, Tonbridge, Ilkeston and Skegness and spa managers vacancies at its new stores in Stockton and Stirling.

Phil Tuner-Naylor, Jollyes’ jubilee co-ordinator, said: “Corgis are awesome dogs and thanks to her majesty they’ve got a special place in the nation’s hearts. There are so many iconic photographs of her with her beloved dogs down the years.

“Our groomers would love to meet local corgis and give them a makeover so they can look their best for the big weekend.”

Although the Queen has been closely associated with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Jollyes’ offer also extends to Cardigan Welsh Corgis and ‘dorgis’.

The Queen currently has four dogs – two corgis, one dorgi and a cocker spaniel and the dorgi, Candy, is the eldest dog.  Many believe the Queen herself inspired the dorgi – a dachshund-corgi mix when one of Elizabeth’s corgis mated with her sister Princess Margaret’s dachsund Pipkin.

Owners should visit the Jollyes website https://www.jollyes.co.uk/i/grooming-spa to find the nearest store with The Spa in-store grooming service and then contact Jollyes to make an appointment.

Get paid £5,000 to eat dog food for five days

How does £5,000 for five days’ work sound? Well, that’s the fee on offer from pet brand OMNI, which is recruiting for a unique tester of its dog food...

How does £5,000 for five days’ work sound? Well, that’s the fee on offer from pet brand OMNI, which is recruiting for a unique tester of its dog food.

This is what it says on its website: “Here at OMNI we don’t use unwanted animal by-products and left overs that most dog food brands use. We aim to smash the rules out of the park with tasty, plant-based ingredients that humans would not only eat but would enjoy. Think sweet potatoes, lentils, brown rice, pumpkin, blueberries, peas and cranberries - all of those sound pretty darn good, right?

“We believe in our food so much that we’re going to put our money where our mouth is and are looking for someone to eat dog food - and nothing else - for 5 days and want to pay them £5,000 to do so.

“And trust us when we say we’d even eat OMNI food ourselves. We’re sure many other dog food producers wouldn’t!

“In a society with a lack of education around diets for dogs, we understand there is a pre-existing and negative misconception about feeding your dog a plant-based diet. We hope that by hiring someone to change their diet, we can communicate that, where plant-based dog food is concerned - it’s good enough for humans so why not our dogs?

“For the role to be successful we will ask the taste tester to record their experience of the temporary diet change, monitoring how they feel when carrying out the challenge - such as energy levels, comfort and bowel movements. We will provide a questionnaire for our new hire to fill in.

“In return for the diet change and their work, we will pay the successful candidate £5,000 for the 5-day job role and will provide all food expenses, plus the taste tester will have access to a registered dietician throughout.

“We will also complete optional health tests on the candidate before, during and after the experiment to ensure they are maintaining good health but also to monitor how the diet is affecting them.

“A selection of plant-based dog food will be provided to ensure the candidate has a varied meal plan, all using a variety of current and as yet unreleased OMNI dog food and ingredients.”

Job applications close on 31st May as OMNI hopes to hire someone early next month. You can apply by clicking here

Boom in designer dogs could see rise in welfare issues

A new study by the Royal Veterinary College suggests that increased demand for designer crossbreed dogs poses a significant risk to the health and welfare of these animals...

A new study, led by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), has revealed a huge demand for designer crossbreed dogs in the UK between 2019 and 2020 and has identified the main factors behind the increasing demand – including beliefs that they are more hypoallergenic, generally healthy, easy to train and good with children, which could be misconceptions based on current evidence.

The new study also suggests that this increased demand poses a significant risk to the health and welfare of these designer dogs due to high demand leading to poor breeding and to buyers unintentionally supporting puppy farming and illegal importation of underage puppies.

Designer crossbreeding describes the planned mating between distinct pure breeds to create new designer dogs with catchy names. For example, a cross between a Pekingese and a Miniature Poodle would create a Peke-a-poo that could sell for much more than either of the parent breeds. The findings of this study are vital to improving understanding on why the popularity of designer crossbreeds is increasing across the UK and subsequently for improving advice to the public on responsible puppy purchasing that prioritises canine welfare and supports safe and responsible breeding.

The team comprised of researchers from the RVC, the University of Nottingham and an independent consultant. They used the online Pandemic Puppies survey to canvas nearly 6,300 owners across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, who acquired a puppy between 2019 and 2020, including 1,575 owners of designer crossbreeds. The five most common designer crossbreeds in the study were the Cockapoo, Labradoodle, Cavapoo, Sprocker, and Goldendoodle.

The team previously documented a significant increase in designer crossbreed ownership during the pandemic, from fewer than 1 in 5 puppies in 2019 being a designer crossbreed (18.8%), to more than 1 in 4 puppies in 2020 (26.1%). This highlights a dramatic shift in demand towards designer crossbreeds in the UK population and suggests that designer dogs are now the latest ‘fad breed’ for puppy buyers.

Importantly, the study found that the main drivers of acquiring a designer crossbreed puppy compared with a purebred puppy were perceptions that designer crossbreeds offered a size suited to their owner’s lifestyle (74.8% vs 59.1% for purebred); were generally healthy (62.1% vs 42.3% for purebred); good with children (56.0% vs 42.5% for purebred); easy to train (54.3% vs 36.4% for purebred); and hypoallergenic (47.1% vs. 7.9% for purebred).

Additional findings include that owners of designer crossbreeds:

  • Prioritise convenient purchasing of their dog over welfare factors – being less likely to seek a breeder that was trustworthy or provided relevant health tests in favour of a breeder that lived within a suitable distance or had available puppies at the desired time.
  • Were less likely to be provided with DNA and veterinary screening tests for their puppies’ parents by their breeder - in part a result of fewer crossbreed owners asking to see any results or believing that there were no relevant tests for their crossbreed.
  • Were more likely to source their puppy online, via a general selling website or an animal-specific selling website.

Designer crossbreed buyers also overlooked more ‘red flags’ during the purchasing process that put them at increased risk of being deceived and purchasing their puppy from unscrupulous sources. This included placing a deposit on their puppy before they had seen it in-person, being less likely to see their puppy in person before purchase and being less likely to see their puppy with its littermates or mother when collected, despite the strong ‘Where’s Mum?’ campaign against puppy farming in the UK since 2015. Ignoring these important ‘red flags’ risks unintentionally supporting puppy farming and illegal imports of puppies, inflicting major early-life stresses on puppies that could have lifelong behaviour and welfare consequences.

This booming designer crossbreed trade is also posing a serious risk to the overall welfare of these animals. This includes health risks caused by breeding without due regard to health, increasing the risk of inherited disorders. For example, a reduced emphasis on pre-breeding health screening of the parents of many designer crossbreeds could lead to increased levels of debilitating conditions such as hip dysplasia in the Labradoodle (Labrador x Poodle) in the future.

Other issues include a potentially increased rate of relinquishment of designer crossbreeds in the future, as owners realise the reality of their misconceptions. For example, designer crossbreeds are thought to be hypoallergenic (a trait sought-after by almost half of this owner group), yet there is no strong evidence of this trait in studies of designer crossbreeds, and allergies have been cited as one of the top three reasons for dog relinquishment, often within one year of ownership. Additionally, behavioural risks are increased as, in some cases, behaviour in designer crossbreed offspring is less desirable than the behaviour of the parent breeds, including increased levels of aggression in the Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever x Poodle).

It is hoped that this study will help to build an understanding of factors driving the designer crossbreed puppy demand and help vets, sellers and the wider pet industry to educate owners on the importance of safe puppy purchasing and the risks to canine health and welfare if not adhered to.

Dr Rowena Packer, Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science at the RVC said:

“The UK public are flocking towards designer crossbreeds based on perceptions that they are ‘off the shelf’ easy family dogs; trainable, healthy, and hypoallergenic dogs that fit into their owners’ existing lifestyles. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that reality will meet all of these high expectations, with little evidence to support these claims.

“These misconceptions risk poor outcomes for both dogs and their owners in the future, including rehoming, unexpected health problems and bite risks. Would-be owners should avoid being enticed by designer labels and rose-tinted expectations, and instead conduct thorough research to help decide if these are really the dogs for them.”

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC said:

“Sadly, designer dogs often do not come from ‘designer’ breeding programmes but are farmed indiscriminately to meet the current craze for breed-crosses with catchy names such as Frug and Jackalier. Check out the seller before buying, visit your puppy several times before you bring them home, and always make sure you see the puppy with its mum.”

This study was funded by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW), with the original study that generated the dataset was funded by the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF).

£10m expansion underway at vet hospital

One of the largest specialist vet referrals centres in the UK, Southern Counties Veterinary Specialist (SCVS) in Ringwood, Hampshire, is undergoing an extensive expansion, doubling the current premises to 30,000 ft2...

One of the largest specialist vet referrals centres in the UK, Southern Counties Veterinary Specialist (SCVS) in Ringwood, Hampshire, is undergoing an extensive expansion, doubling the current premises to 30,000 ft2.

The 200-strong team at SCVS will be provided with a state-of-the-art referral hospital, beautifully designed to be complement the stunning surroundings of the New Forest National Park.

The improvements are part of a programme of extensive group-wide investment into referral services and staff by IVC Evidensia.

The SCVS redevelopment is the largest in the investment programme and this latest phase is expected to complete in October 2022.

Key to the development is the addition of a new two-storey building which will add an inviting new reception and waiting area, with a private waiting room for sensitive cases, multiple new consulting rooms, as well as additional out-patient procedure rooms and extensive new equipment.

Cats will be well looked after at the facility, with a dedicated cat-friendly waiting area and a cat-only consulting room to minimise owners’ stress when visiting the hospital with their pets.

Stephen Collins, Hospital Director and Specialist Cardiologist at SCVS, states:

“We are very excited about the developments at our Ringwood Hospital and are looking forward to opening our doors later this year. We have an amazing team of people at SCVS, and I am delighted we now have a facility that will provide them with the very best working environment as well as more space to allow us to expand the services we offer.

“After two long years of Covid restrictions, we are very much looking forward to inviting clients into this fabulous facility and providing them, and their pets, with the exceptional care they deserve.”

As well as an increase in the number of pets across the UK, the pandemic pet boom has seen a shift in mindset of owners as they increasingly look for more advanced treatment options to pet health situations.

The SCVS hospital will benefit from a brand-new operating theatre complex which will include give new theatres, all with advanced equipment to expand the level of treatment offered on site, including orthopaedic, soft tissue, neurology and interventional cardiology theatres.

The development will also see the addition of a new physiotherapy and hydrotherapy suite, with brand new water treadmill, dedicated consulting room and large arena area with gait analysis capability.

Training and developing future talent is also a cornerstone of SCVS’s ambitions. Collins added: “We are particularly excited about our new lecture theatre. SCVS has one of the largest resident and intern training programmes within the IVC Evidensia group, so we are delighted to now have a new lecture room to further enhance our teaching capabilities. We are also very much looking forward to sharing this area, providing high quality CPD events for our vet and nurse colleagues in the region.

“These additional buildings, as well as equipment and staff investment will provide us with the resources to further enhance the referral services we provide, supporting our colleagues in practice and the local pet-owning community. We believe we will offer the very best professional and learning environment for vets and nurses, helping us to continue attracting the very best people in the veterinary field to SCVS.”

In addition to all the new clinical facilities, a new spacious staff area will provide the growing team at SCVS with a communal area to meet, relax and dine together. Kennel space for staff dogs has also been increased, further supporting SCVS’s ‘bring your dog to work” policy.  A specific staff welfare area will also help ensure the very best working environment.

Once the new buildings open in October 2022, redevelopment of the existing hospital buildings will start. This area will be totally redesigned and refurbished, to create a new diagnostic imaging suite including new MRI facility (Siemens Altea 1.5T MRI), improved CT facility (Siemens 64-slice ECG-gated Somatom), brand new radiography suite and two dedicated ultrasound rooms. There will also be a dedicated ICU unit, new endoscopy and chemotherapy areas and aneurology area with dedicated EMG room.

The hospital is currently operating and is open to referrals from surrounding daytime vet practices, including pets which need more specialist treatment or out of hours care. For more information, visit https://www.scvetspecialists.co.uk/

Beco launch new treats including first insect-based recipe

Beco is launching its first ever range of treats with four nutritious recipes designed to help dogs master skills through positive reinforcement...

Beco is launching its first ever range of treats with four nutritious recipes designed to help dogs master skills through positive reinforcement.

With ground-breaking new recipes featuring locally sourced ingredients, including Insect, Dog Choc, and Cashew, Beco has cherry-picked all the ingredients that dogs love and baked them into tasty biscuits.

The new Treats range includes Beco’s first Insect recipe.  Insects are a super source of digestible protein, and, even better, dogs love the taste.  They have all the aminos and proteins needed to build and maintain healthy muscles, making these little treats a great addition to dogs’ diets – whilst also having a low carbon footprint too.

The range also has vegan options for those looking to reduce their pup’s meat intake, with delicious plant based, protein packed options such as:

Dog Choc, a soothing blend of carob, chamomile, and quinoa, like a warm mug of cocoa that’s perfect for dogs. Carob is a healthy chocolate alternative, making each soft-baked biscuit all the more moreish. Beco has added chamomile for its calming qualities and quinoa for its antioxidants.

Cashew, a delicious blend of buttery cashews with pumpkin seeds and sweet carrots, and Peanut, made with crunchy peanuts, quinoa, and creamy coconut.

The treats, which are small and snappable, to make them easy to break up when training dogs, are baked in to fun bone shapes in small batches in Devon.  Furthermore, they are cooked in ovens powered by renewable energy.

George Bramble, Beco Founder, says: “Treats are such an important way to encourage and reward dogs, and we wanted to create something really special.  We’re so proud of this new range, not just because of the locally sourced ingredients or the sustainable baking process, but also because dogs love the taste whilst their owners can be confident they are healthy and nutritious too.”

Vet Madi Hewitson says: “Treat time can be a fantastic opportunity to not only show our dogs what good boys and girls they are but to give them treats that have ingredients that provide a real health boost. Treats should only make up 10% of our dogs daily healthy calorie intake but it is important that the quality of the ingredients match those present in their daily food.”

Beco’s Treats range can be found at www.becopets.com at £2.99 for a 70g recyclable bag.

Guide for people thinking of training to become dog groomer

The iPET Network has released a comprehensive guide for anyone thinking about choosing a career in dog grooming...

The iPET Network has released a comprehensive guide for anyone thinking about choosing a career in dog grooming.

There is a national shortage of qualified dog groomers, and with the puppy boom creating more demand than ever, it is the perfect time to consider a career in animal care.

International Awarding Organisation and qualification creators iPET Network has created a no nonsense guide, for those considering a career change and wondering how to start.

The guide, which is available at https://www.ipetnetwork.co.uk/guides/a-guide-to-becoming-a-dog-groomer/ outlines the steps that those entering the industry should take, to ensure that they are well prepared for the challenging and rewarding career.

An extract from the guide reads: "Technically in the UK anyone can just pick up a pair of scissors and start trimming dogs for money, but that is a terrifying prospect given the level of skill, safety, animal welfare and competence that is required.

"You are also looking after people's beloved pets, and could risk high costs and severe damage to your businesses' reputation if something should go wrong.

WildWash has won a UK Enterprise Award, hosted by SME News, being recognised as the Best Natural Pet Shampoo Company – London.

WildWash utilises natural ingredients to remedy common afflictions. Skin irritations, dandruff, mites, ticks and mange can all be treated effectively using the non- harmful, chemical free solutions WildWash has developed.

The main point that sets apart from their competition is that WildWash wasn’t started from a business point of view.

Jane Cooper, one of the founders, explained: “We basically just wanted to make products that were kind to our pets and kind to the environment.

“We didn’t worry about the costs of making the products or how to market the products, or any business related aspect, we just wanted to make products that we were proud to use.

“We didn’t advertise at all and in fact we were just happy to use them ourselves in our grooming salon. They had astounding results on the pets they were used on and then word spread. We now export all over the world and are considered the No.1 Natural Pet Care Brand in the world.”

Award-winning animal attraction celebrates

Kew Little Pigs staff, friends and supporters in Amersham enjoyed a fun summer party to celebrate recent achievements and developments...

Kew Little Pigs staff, friends and supporters enjoyed a fun summer party to celebrate recent achievements and developments.

Owner Olivia Mikhail hosted the packed event on Sunday, to celebrate recent award success, a brand new shop and cafe, and improved facilities at the popular attraction.

Adult revelers were treated to a DJ, drinks and a Lebanese food truck, while the younger guests enjoyed a bounce along to the music on a giant inflatable.

The Amersham farm's resident pigs, goats and birds also enjoyed the fuss, as visitors took tours of the farm and enjoyed piggy play times on arrival.

Olivia said: "What a wonderful party, and it was so important to me to have this celebration to say a big thank you to all our friends, family and supporters.

"It was amazing to have everyone all together, enjoying the sunshine and sharing all that we have achieved. A brilliant day."

The farm attraction, which is also an ethical micro pig breeder, has recently undergone some works on site, which includes a plush new shop and cafe area.

And the party was also a chance to celebrate coming out of the challenging pandemic as a multi award-winning attraction.

In 2021 Olivia won the prestigious Best Business Woman in Animal Services Award, and earlier this year scooped Business Woman of the Year' and gold finalist in Unique Business and Most Inspiring Business Woman categories at the Ladies First Business and Inspirational Women Awards, as well as finalist in the Inspirational Business Woman category.

The park also won a Lockdown Legend award from Nfan and Best Family Attraction in Buckinghamshire from SME News.

Olivia added: "The pandemic was a very difficult time, but celebrations like this really are the icing on the cake, showing that all our hard work and resilience was worth it in the end."

Olivia founded Kew Little Pigs when her  young daughter became obsessed with the films Babe and Charlotte's Web.

And from Olivia's garden in 2010 to its current 3.6 acre premises the business is going from strength to strength.

Kew Little Pigs is a farm park, where visitors can take part in fun pig-keeping experiences and mingle with the site's many gorgeous micropigs.

The business also ethically breeds the little pigs, who then become beloved pets in the homes of responsible families, following a full vetting process.

Every potential new family has to take part in a pig-keeping course, and then receives support and guidance from Kew Little Pigs for the life of their pet.

New research reveals risk factors to tortoises

New research from the Royal Veterinary College has revealed the factors contributing to sickness and mortality in captive tortoises in the United Kingdom during and post brumation...

Marking World Tortoise and Turtle Day, new research from the Royal Veterinary College has revealed the factors contributing to sickness and mortality in captive tortoises in the United Kingdom during and post brumation.

Tortoise brumation occurring in gardens, and uncontrolled temperatures prior to brumation are significant risk factors contributing to tortoise ill-health and mortality.

Using these findings, vets can now be aware of these risk factors to ensure they target husbandry and brumation advice to owners of tortoises to reduce these risks.

Brumation is akin to hibernation and is a natural part of many reptiles’ annual cycle, but it is also the time of year most likely to be associated with health problems.

These include immunosuppression, dehydration, freezing, rodent attack or other trauma. However, hibernation does have advantages even in captive reptiles, slowing growth and allowing natural annual hormonal fluctuations.

Before this study, there were almost no studies in the UK regarding the hibernation of pet tortoises and the understanding of this process was very limited. The RVC’s new research, therefore, provides vital insights that will allow pet owners and the vet community to better support safe tortoise brumation.

Led by Dr Joanna Hedley and Dr Vicki Baldrey, Lecturers in Exotic Species and Small Mammal Medicine and Surgery at the RVC, the researchers gathered information on 270 tortoises, from 252 completed surveys. The team then used binary logistic regression and multivariate modelling to evaluate the potential predictors associated with brumation-related death and post-brumation problems.

The study found a 7.78% mortality rate during brumation and that 7.22% of surviving tortoises were reported as having post-brumation health concerns. It also found that brumation in a garden and an uncontrolled reduction of temperature prior to brumation were the main risk factors for morbidity and mortality in tortoises.

This research supports previous findings and advice1 from the RVC and emphasises the importance of carefully monitoring elements such as temperature and environment for brumation. For example, during the cold winter months, vigilant checking is required to protect tortoises’ safety. Heat sources should be guarded or kept at a height to prevent thermal burns and temperatures should never allow fall below 15°C.

Dr Joanna Hedley, Lecturer in Exotic Species and Small Mammal Medicine and Surgery at the RVC said: “Unfortunately, little is known about brumation in tortoises in the UK. We hope this research provides much-needed insight into the safekeeping of tortoises during this important period of their annual cycle and will support both vets and pet owners to best look after these delicate creatures.”

Owners encouraged to have pet-safe Jubilee weekend

As the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend approaches the PDSA is encouraging pet owners to keep their furry friends out of harm’s way...

As the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend approaches the PDSA is encouraging pet owners to keep their furry friends out of harm’s way.

PDSA Vet Nurse, Nina Downing, said: “This year’s Jubilee serves as the perfect opportunity to enjoy time spent with family, friends and neighbours, but amid all the festivities, we must be mindful of our four-legged friends. While we wouldn’t want them to miss out on all the fun, it’s important we understand how to keep them safe during the celebrations.

Nina provides her top tips for a pet-safe Jubilee:

Street party safety

“Street parties can be great fun for the whole neighbourhood, but large crowds can be overwhelming for pets – be wary of loud noises such as music or fireworks and look out for signs that your furry family member may be in distress.

“People may also be in and out of your house and garden regularly, so always keep a close eye on your pet – you definitely don’t want them making a run for it down the road if a door or gate accidently gets left open!

“If you’re worried about your pooch making a dash out of the door, it’s best to set up a secure doggy den for them to stay safe inside. Cats feel safest when they’re high up and out of the way, while small pet enclosures can be moved into a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of the party.

Mind the heat

“The great British weather can be unpredictable at best, but if we’re lucky enough to have the sun shining on our long weekend of fun, it’s important to keep our pets safe from heatstroke.

“If you plan on spending the day outside with your furry friend, always make sure they have somewhere in the shade to rest and pack plenty of water to keep them hydrated. As flat-faced dogs struggle to regulate their body temperature, they can overheat even when the weather doesn’t seem too hot to us, so avoid taking them out in the heat of the day. Remember to check the pavement isn’t too hot before heading out for a street party, as in warm weather footpaths can reach unsafe temperatures for sensitive paws.

Decorative dangers

“It wouldn’t be a Jubilee celebration without bunting lining every street corner, but our patriotic décor can be tempting for curious furry friends. Should your pet get hold of any decorations then there’s a chance they could swallow them, which could potentially cause life-threatening blockages. To avoid an emergency, hang any decorations well out of reach from any prying paws, and pack them away in a secure, high place once you take them down. Avoid the temptation to dress up your pets to celebrate – it can cause anxiety, overheating and they really do look their best just wearing what nature intended!

Unlucky leftovers

“Whether you’re planning a street party bake-off or a sizzling bank holiday BBQ, it can be tempting to treat our pets to a bite of our yummy delights. Unfortunately, human food doesn’t always sit well with our furry friends, and sugary, fatty, or greasy scraps can cause severe sickness and diarrhoea which may require emergency treatment. Keep the leftovers for yourself to enjoy and treat your pet with a healthy option instead.”

PDSA is the UK’s largest vet charity providing a vital service for pets across the UK whose owners struggle to afford treatment costs for their sick and injured pets. For many vulnerable pets, PDSA is there to help when there is nowhere else for their owners to turn. Support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery helps us reach even more pet owners with vital advice and information. www.pdsa.org.uk

Natural Cornish Pet adds to popular natural treats range

Award-winning Natural Cornish Pet has added to its range of  natural treats by introducing two new varieties of 100% sweet potato treats...

Award-winning Natural Cornish Pet has added to its range of  natural treats by introducing two new varieties of 100% sweet potato treats.

Sweet Potato Chunks and Fries offer a natural low fat treat option for dogs. Perfect for training and rewarding good behaviour they provide the ideal snack and are suitable for dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Sweet potato is a rich source of vitamins C and B6 as well as being a good source of manganese, potassium and other B vitamins.

Vitamin C can help to reduce inflammation in dogs and can also be helpful in improving their cognitive function. Vitamin B6 is vital in the functioning of the red blood cells that are responsible for carrying oxygen around your pet’s body and is also essential in maintaining a healthy central nervous system as well as helping to regulate hormone distribution. Potassium aids electrical function in the brain and nervous system in your dog and manganese aids in the preservation of strong bones and cartilage.

The common dark orange coloured sweet potato is also a source of beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A and can help to maintain and nurture your dog's eyesight as well as improving immune function. Sweet potato can also help to balance blood-sugar levels so is a good alternative treat for those dogs suffering from diabetes.

This richly nutritious food source is also great for the environment as it reduces the amount of meat that a dog consumes. It's also irresistible to dogs with its sweet and sticky flavours and textures, making it a top choice for any dog owner who is looking for a sustainable and nutritious option for their canine companions.

Natural Cornish Pet was voted the Best Independent Pet Retailer of the Year in the 2021 PetQuip Awards.

TV star endorses launch of Harringtons supplements

Harringtons has added to its popular Advanced Science Range with its latest supplement launch, which has been endorsed by Peter Wright, star of TV's The Yorkshire Vet...

Harringtons has added to its popular Advanced Science Range with its latest supplement launch – offering quality, tailored and nutritionally advanced supplements, which are both affordable and accessible.

It is estimated that the dog supplements market is worth at least £120 million a year and growing at over 50% across retail and online channels. Given the exceptional rate of growth in the category and the value of supplements to consumers, IPN is staying at the fore of the market trends.

Launching four new products in the form of chews and tablets, Harringtons are helping to eliminate the struggles of dog owners who are forced to hide or disguise supplements, with these new easy formats.

Available in two age ranges, with two product formats, the new supplement range will include:

  • Harringtons Shield Joint Support Chews for Adults Dogs (150 chews) - £29.95
  • Harringtons Shield Joint Support Tablets for Adults Dogs (300 tablets) - £44.95
  • Harringtons Shield Senior Hip & Joint Care Chew Supplement (150 chews) – £29.95
  • Harringtons Shield Senior Hip & Joint Care Tablet Supplement (300 tablets) – £59.95

Endorsed by Peter Wright, The Yorkshire Vet, these new supplements, aimed to be fed alongside a healthy diet, are packed full of nutritional benefits.

Harringtons identified the three key essential purchase factors for owners as being taste, naturalness and meatiness; resulting in a product made from completely natural ingredients and freshly prepared meat and fish. Four-legged-friends get a tasty, meaty product, which they will naturally love, whilst being accessible to all.

Green Lipped Mussel provides an incredibly concentrated source of Omega3, benefitting a dog’s skin and coat, whilst improving mobility by supporting stiff and aching joints. Alongside this, there is a bespoke blend of Vitamins C and E to neutralize free radicals - helping to maintain and prolong joint mobility. Added magnese and glucosamine assist collagen formation in the cartilage, tendons and ligaments, with a boost of Hyaluronic Acid which supports the synovial fluid in lubricating and cushioning the joints.

Speaking of the new supplements, Peter Wright, The Yorkshire Vet, said: “Our dogs deserve a life filled with joy and comfort, where they can walk, run, jump and play to their hearts’ content. I’ve partnered with Harringtons on its Advanced Science Diet supplements to make sure we help give provide our dogs with just that.”

Chris Wragg, Marketing Director at Inspired Pet Nutrition, commented: “When your pet gets older or suffers from health issues and starts to slow down, it can be a difficult time for the whole family. With this new launch we are hoping that alongside a healthy diet and active lifestyle, owners will be able to share those special moments with their pets for longer.”
