Tributes have been pouring in from the UK pet industry following the sad passing of John James, who has died at the age of 76.
John, who founded the family-owned business James & Steel, was one of the most respected figures in the pet world.

A true family business. John, fifth from the left, said it was a proud moment to be pictured with family members on the James & Steel stand at PATS last year.
Son Jason spoke on behalf of the family, saying: “It is with great sorrow that we have to report that our father and founder of James & Steel, John James has passed away following a short illness at the age of 76.
“The pet trade has been a great passion of John’s for over 50 years, and the many messages of condolence and support have been much appreciated, and indeed are indicative of what a friendly trade we are lucky enough to be involved in,
“He leaves behind many happy memories of a life well lived.”
Amanda Sizer Barrett MBE, Director General of PetQuip, said: “I was deeply saddened by the news of John James’ passing. John was such a passionate supporter of international trade shows and of the PetQuip trade association, supporting our work to expand UK pet product exports and encouraging other companies to join our initiatives.
“For this and many other reasons, John was a worthy recipient of the PetQuip Lifetime Achievement Award, but he didn’t rest on his laurels: in recent years he was a regular attendee on the PetQuip pavilions at international trade events, including Interzoo, Zoomark and he exhibited with us at Superzoo in August and at Pet Fair South-East Asia only last November.
“John was a great entrepreneur, a consummate salesperson and an incredible hard worker, as well as being one of the nicest, funniest and interesting people I have ever had the privilege to meet. The team at PetQuip all knew and loved John’s energy, straight-talking and positive thinking.
“We will treasure lovely memories of John; in my case there are too many to mention but I’d like to highlight John’s love of dancing and his supreme prowess on the PetQuip awards dance floor!
“The UK pet sector has lost one of its best. Our warmest wishes and sincere condolences go to John’s family and friends.”

John, pictured with son Saul discussing product ranges.
Nigel Baker, CEO of the Pet Industry Federation, remarked: “John James was a true gentleman and a dedicated figure in the pet industry. Over the decades, he witnessed huge changes, yet he remained a constant presence – always committed, always passionate. He was a man of great integrity who never hesitated to share his thoughts, and his honesty and wisdom were valued by so many. I had the privilege of knowing John for over 30 years, and his loss will be deeply felt across the industry. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and we will miss him greatly.”
Gordon Thomas, event director at PATS where James and Steel was a regularly exhibitor, also paid tribute to John, saying: “I am so sad to hear about John – he was funny, positive, great to be around and always had time to stop and have a chat. He always had a plan and a great story too.
“We will really miss him at PATS, he was a great friend to us and was always happy to let us know what he thought about the show and was always constructive.
“To be honest I thought he would go on forever and that we would never have this conversation.”
Pat Flynn, who became friendly with John when she worked at PetQuip, commented: “John James was one of the loveliest people I have had the pleasure to know. He was a true character in the pet trade and he will be very much missed. I first met him at an industry dinner and when the dancing started, he was the first on the floor. How he could move; we were all mesmerised by his rhythm and obvious enjoyment in the music. They don't make them like that anymore.”
Other tributes included:
- “A very sad loss of a trade stalwart. John always had a friendly word for everyone and will be missed.” Lynda Ward.
- ‘Very sad. I’ve known John for around 40 years – a really good guy. Best wishes to the family.” Philip Wells and all at PetShed.
- “Sad news. Condolences from all at Not Just Pets.” Janine Tozer.
- “Sad to hear the news. Known John a long time in the pet industry. RIP John.” Mark at Glenkrag Ltd.
- “I truly loved this man, we shared many great moments in different bars around Europe. Will miss you greatly mate.” Andres, Lennox Pets.

Honeyfield’s shares tips to help your customers support fledglings

It’s officially the wild bird fledging period in the UK and these delicate young birds have special feeding needs. Honeyfield’s resident wild bird expert Simon Smethurst, who is head of sales at Honeyfield’s, is here to help. He has put together some tips and advice for retailers to share with customers, to help their precious garden fledglings thrive.
“Fledglings are young birds that have left the nest but still rely on their parents for food, said Simon. They require a diet rich in protein and fats to support their rapid growth, feather development, and increased activity as they learn to fly and forage.
“Feeding them is a delicate yet rewarding task. It gives you the opportunity to open dialogue with your customers to guide them on the best choices, to make their gardens as fledgling friendly as possible.”

Simon has written the following top tips for retailers to share with their customers:
- In the wild, parent birds provide fledglings with insects, larvae, and other protein-rich foods, but human intervention can help when natural food sources are scarce or when supplementing bird populations in their garden.
- Suet blocks and pellets are excellent options for supporting fledglings. Made from fat and enriched with seeds, fruits, and insects, suet provides concentrated energy that fledglings need to fuel their development and maintain body warmth.
- Mealworms are a highly attractive and nutritious source of protein that mimics the insect’s fledglings naturally consume.
- By providing supplementary foods, you not only help fledglings survive but also encourage biodiversity and provide birdwatching opportunities.
- Place suet blocks, pellets, and mealworms in easily accessible feeders or on flat surfaces near sheltered areas where fledglings can safely eat.
- To ensure the safety of fledglings, avoid foods that are difficult to digest, such as bread or processed items.
- Ensure a consistent supply of fresh water for drinking and bathing.
- Remember that cats are a danger to fledglings and birds’ nests. If possible, try to keep your cat inside until the fledglings have finished feeding and left the garden. It’s best to do this until the birds have moved on.
“By understanding and addressing the nutritional needs of fledgling birds, you can play a vital role in supporting their transition to independence while fostering a thriving local bird community.” said Simon.
Honeyfield’s suet blocks and suet pellets are premium, energy-rich feeds designed to support wild birds, especially during demanding periods like nesting and fledging. Packed with essential nutrients, they provide long-lasting energy, helping birds thrive. Easy to use and highly palatable, they will attract a variety of species to your garden.
By choosing Honeyfields, you actively contribute to the health and vitality of local bird populations, fostering a vibrant natural environment all year round.
The range is competitively priced for consumers to be able to feed the best, while retailers can benefit from good margin structures and introductory stocking incentives.

As the company celebrates 125 years in business, Donald Cooke looks forward to an exciting future with new product launches in the pipeline.
Managing director Andrew Cooke repeated the words once spoken by his grandfather: “The minute you stand still, you go backwards.”
Five generations of the Cooke family have been determined to drive the business forward to the success it is today.
Andrew Cooke declares that he will “strive to uphold the rich history of growth and innovation, working tirelessly to continue the legacy for many years to come.”
William John Cooke laid the foundations for the business in 1900. As orphan from Rutland he was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle in Woodhouse Sheffield, just two miles from the current head office, and started out as a carrier with a horse and cart.
Joined by Cyril Cooke after the First World War, then later by Cyril’s two sons Donald and Colin, they grew the business to manufacture breadcrumb and trade in their own shop. The brothers parted ways in 1967, but Donald did not rest on his laurels, moving the business to another site in Rotherham and began producing one of the first complete dog foods called NEG+.
In 1973 Bill Cooke joined full time. Two years later a fire gutted the main building and production unit, but with the dedication of their team they built the business back up, rebranding the NEG+ complete food to Lookydog, producing approximately 40 tonnes per week.
By 1987 they had developed EMP egg food for cage birds which became, and is still, a significant part of the business. In 2002 Andrew Cooke joined the company which had grown into the manufacture, packing and distribution of angling, aquaculture, pet and animal feed.
Over the past few years, the pet range has developed into a comprehensive selection of quality bulk and pre-packed natural dog treats under the K9 Chew Co brand, whilst being the sole distributor of No More Plaque, Tick Twister and Bamboo Stick to the pet trade.
“We are delighted to have won two product showcase awards at PATS last year – one for our K9 Chew Co Pick ‘n’ Mix training treat stand and one with Tick Twister,” said Andrew. “I am so proud that the business and team are committed to delivering excellence. We are looking forward to what the future may hold.”
The business has launched new fishing products, its own brand pond range ‘Suteki’ and expanded the natural pet range already this year. It is currently working on something new and exciting for the pet trade, to be launched this year – proof that the company is not about to stand still anytime soon.

Jollyes gets set to open two new superstores
Award-winning pet retailer Jollyes, has confirmed its next two new stores, in Chichester and Pontefract, will both open on Friday 14 March at 10.00am, with special guests at each to help welcome customers, whether they have two legs or four...

Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes, who will attend the Pontefract opening is delighted to start the 2025 opening programme.

Kaydee (left) and Hugo (right) who are both supported by the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals will open new Jollyes stores in Pontefract and Chichester respectively.
Award-winning pet retailer Jollyes, has confirmed its next two new stores, in Chichester and Pontefract, will both open on Friday 14 March at 10.00am, with special guests at each to help welcome customers, whether they have two legs or four.
Both stores will have opening ceremonies led with retired police dogs supported in their later years by the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA), Jollyes nationwide charity partner.
The NFRSA helps support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family - the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.
All Jollyes’ stores are raising money for NFRSA with collections matched by Jollyes up to £20,000 to help NFRSA support retired service animals and their owners.
Biting through a string of sausages at Chichester to declare the store open will be retired explosives search dog Hugo who worked at Gatwick Airport for six years with Sussex Police and now, despite arthritis in one of his paws, is enjoying his retirement with handler Justin.
And fulfilling the same task at Pontefract will be retired prison dog Kaydee. Kaydee has an under active thyroid requiring daily medication but is the pride and joy of handler Andy.
But both Hugo and Kaydee will have to share the limelight at the openings.
In Chichester, joining the opening team at Portfield Trade Centre on Bognor Road will be local MP Jess Brown-Fuller’s rescue golden labrador Mellow who’s graciously accepted an invitation to lead the opening celebrations and share sausage-munching duties. Also attending will be Chichester Mayor Councillor Sarah Quail.
And in Pontefract, the home of sweet production, on hand at South Baileygate Retail Park will be community ensemble The Liquorice Singers to serenade shoppers with pet-themed songs alongside the Mayor of Wakefield Borough Council Darren Byford.
Both new stores will provide pet parents access to Jollyes’ raw food frozen ‘shop-in-shop’ and community pet clinics which will offer unbeatable prices for essential vet services such as microchipping and vaccinations.
Jollyes has recruited around 20 roles across each of its two new stores, led in Chichester by Chris Ratcliffe and in Pontefract by Meg Percival.
Chris the owner of three Dobermans (Parker, Penny and Tinks) is an example of the career opportunities opening up for Jollyes’ people as it grows. Chris began his career as a sales assistant at Jollyes in North Harbour in 2019 before promotion to supervisor, and then deputy store manager at Waterlooville.
Meg is the loving owner of seven-year-old Rolo a Maltipoo who loves walking around Pontefract race track.
Meg has worked at Jollyes’ Selby store for 18 months. She too has progressed in Jollyes and alongside other Jollyes colleagues transferring to the store, will bring significant pet expertise.

Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes, who will attend the Pontefract opening was delighted to start the 2025 opening programme.
“Over the last three years we’ve been opening stores right across the UK bringing the combination of the best value in town and the incredible expertise of our people in looking after families’ pets.
“We plan to bring that combination to significantly more locations in 2025 and we can’t wait to begin our 2025 opening programme in Pontefract and Chichester.”
Over the last three years Jollyes has grown its store estate from around 60 to well over 100, creating well over 400 jobs.
Jollyes had an exceptionally strong 2024, winning new investment to supercharge its growth, being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for retailers under £250m turnover and making the Sunday Times’ list for the first time as one of Britain’s best big companies to work for.
In January it made a major strategic move to ensure all its customers benefit from its low prices, re-investing savings that are currently exclusive to Pet Club members - and more - into simple on-shelf pricing.
The move, which reverses the trend of retailers restricting savings to their loyalty card members, will mean over 3,000 prices were reduced in its 100-plus stores – covering over two thirds of all the 4,500 core items Jollyes carries in a typical store.
Jollyes move to lower prices is part of its long-term plan to underline its position as the price-leader in a specialist sector that’s traditionally been uncompetitive because there’s very little opportunity for pet parents to shop around.
What’s more its move into community pet clinics, which now feature in most of its locations, bring significant value in a sector that’s currently being investigated by the government to address any competition concerns that keep vet prices too high.
The move to simple low pricing also extends to its community pet clinics which will see vaccinations reduced from a Pet Club-only price of £44 to £39 – an important move which widens the price gap on key services between Jollyes and traditional vets.

Crufts 2025, the world’s biggest celebration of dogs, starts at the NEC in Birmingham, today (Thursday) with Paralympian Ellie Simmonds officially launching the event.
She was joined by a historic hound making its Crufts debut, the Polish Hunting Dog, and the new breed welcomed into King Charles III’s family– the Lagotto Romagnolo. Savvy, from Cheshire, is hoping to bring home the Crufts crown after the breed won Best in Show for the first time in 2023.
The event is set to welcome over 20,000 dogs of all shapes and sizes under one roof. It will include amazing displays from the likes of the West Midlands Police, whose newest puppy recruits also joined the event’s launch line-up today, alongside a duo of Springer Spaniels who are making their team debut at Crufts.
Speaking at the launch, Ellie commented: "I've grown up with Crufts because I come from not too far away from here. You always knew Crufts was in town here at the NEC in Birmingham!
"I've been before and to be part of the presenter team, how could you say no? It all kicks off on Thursday, but I've already spent so many hours with dogs and puppies, and it just brings so much happiness.
"For me, I also want to learn about all the different breeds. We know everything about Golden Retrievers and Springer Spaniels, but there's so many other breeds out there that I want to educate myself on. This is the biggest dog show in the world so it's a great place to do that. It’s the most amazing place ever!"
There are 200 breeds vying for the Crufts Best in Show title – the crown will be taken by one top dog on Sunday – hundreds of athletic dogs competing in fast-paced agility and flyball finals, and clever canines showing off their skills in various demonstrations, from police dogs and Medical Detections Dogs, to the most obedient pets. Elsewhere at the event is the Discover Dogs zone, where visitors can meet and greet hundreds of different breeds – from the popular to the unusual – speak to experts about what they are like to live with and care for, and find out which four-legged friend might be best suited to their lifestyle.
More than just a dog show, Crufts celebrates the many diverse roles that dogs play in our lives, and sees competitions such as The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award, the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year competition, Obreedience, in which different breeds compete against each other in teams to prove who is the ‘goodest dog’, and the ever popular fast-paced agility and flyball competitions.
This year will also see almost 20 hours of the Crufts TV show broadcast for dog-lovers across the UK on Channel 4 and More4 – more than ever before.
More information and tickets for the event are available on the Crufts website: crufts.org.uk. Please note that tickets are only available through official ticketing partner, AXS.

London-based pet health supplement company PAWD DRINKS has added a new variety to its successful and growing range of liquid supplements for dogs.
PAWD DRINKS Wellness has been developed and contains essential nutrients to support adog’s recovery, immune system and cognitive health. The new product is suitable for all breeds of dogs and life stages.
Founded by young entrepreneurs and old friends, Rory Hanna and Archie Wilson, who were looking for an easier way to administer supplements to dogs other than in pill or powder format, their innovation PAWD DRINKS made the finals of the PIF Innovation Awards last year where they met and were accepted onto the NatWest Accelerator Programme. They were also finalists at the PetQuip and PIF Awards.
PAWD DRINKS’ products are receiving five-star reviews from customers and the business is shortly to announce a deal with one of the largest chains of pet shops in the UK.
PAWD DRINKS is a revolutionary and groundbreaking range of liquid health supplements, scientifically crafted to target the common health issues faced by our beloved dogs. These innovative products are the result of extensive research and development by world-leading animal nutritionists including Dr. Farshad Goodarzi Boroojeni and are veterinary-approved. Each formula has been carefully crafted to not only address specific health concerns but also contribute to the overall well-being of our four-legged friends. PAWD DRINKS are pH neutral and contain no acidifiers or preservatives.
The drinks market for pets is relatively new but growing and PAWD DRINKS tackle a number of important areas. As well as hydration and wellness, PAWD DRINKS are absorbed more quickly andefficiently by a dog's body compared to pills, powders and chews. This is important when addressing certain health or behavioural issues and when you need a fast result. Administering liquid supplements to dogs is easier than giving them pills or chews, especially for dogs that are finicky eaters or have difficulty swallowing. Liquid supplements can be mixed into their food or into an empty dog bowl and as dogs want to drink, it makes them easier to administer. Dosage is 60 ml for all dogs per day. They are palatable, achieve faster results and are gentle on the digestive system. PAWD DRINKS are less likely to cause irritation or discomfort compared to some pill formulations.
PAWD DRINKS Wellness contains 100% natural active ingredients such as L-leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-valine as well as Yeast Extract. These are all designed to aid muscle recovery, support the immune system and improve cognitive health.
Other supplements in the range include PAWD DRINKS Joints which has been formulated to address stiffness and joint mobility with up to 80% of all dogs suffering from some form of mobility issues over the age of 8. PAWD DRINKS Joints contains natural ingredients, such as ginger, acerola and devil’s claw to support joint mobility.
PAWD DRINKS Calming will help to relax and soothe your dog in any anxious situations. This can be in the form of separation, social, travel or noise anxiety, with around 70% of dogs suffering with fear or anxiety.

Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of ADAPTIL and FELIWAY, is launching its nationwide Pet Anxiety Month campaign during March.
Recent research conducted by the company has revealed that over 40 per cent of the nation’s dog owners worry more about their dog’s mental health than their own, with a whopping 90 per cent admitting that they are regularly concerned that their pet is anxious or stressed.
As a leader in behavioural support, Ceva is making a significant investment in Pet Anxiety Month, which is in its sixth year, to address these concerns. The company will be educating pet owners on the signs of anxiety in cats and dogs throughout the initiative, helping them identify the cause of the problem and ensuring they have the knowledge and resources they need to help manage anxiety and alleviate stress in anxious pets.
The company has partnered with Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and will be making a donation of £1 for every ADAPTIL product sold during March. Pet Anxiety Month will be backed by a hard-hitting marketing campaign including fresh content, a digital and social media campaign and new marketing support material consisting of a poster pack, leaflets, bunting and a social media and digital toolkit.
Pet Anxiety Month is being fronted by TV personality and radio presenter, Kate Lawler, who has taken on the role of official ambassador having experienced anxiety in her rescue Terrier cross, Shirley. Kate, who is a passionate animal lover and has been a dog owner for nearly 15 years, spent a day at Battersea filming for the initiative and she is featured throughtout the Pet Anxiety Month marketing.
Kate, whose dog Shirley is scared of loud noises including fireworks and household items like the vacuum cleaner among other anxiety issues, says: "Before I owned dogs, I had no idea that pet anxiety was a thing. It wasn’t until I brought Shirley into my life that I began to understand how deeply anxiety can affect pets; it’s really unpleasant for a dog to live with. Shirley’s previous history is unknown, but I sense she was mistreated, and I have no idea what happened to make her so anxious.”
During Kate’s Battersea visit she learnt more about how to spot and manage pet anxiety and she adds: “I’ve learned that every dog is different and what works for one may not work for another.”
Abigail King, senior product manager for ADAPTIL and FELIWAY at Ceva Animal Health, comments: “Despite 40 per cent of dog owners worrying more about their dog’s mental health than their own, pet owners are unsure of how to spot signs of stress and support their anxious companions by finding reliable advice. Our significant investment in Pet Anxiety Month will drive awareness and encourage pet owners to look into solutions to manage anxiety in their pets.”

The Companion Animal Sector Council (CASC) is holding an engagement forum on the 13 March 2025 at Bridewell Hall in London.
CASC was set up in 2005 and re-invigorated by The Lord Trees in 2018. The Council brings together a wide range of stakeholders involved with the welfare of companion animals (excluding dogs, cats or equines), which includes veterinary groups, regulators, businesses, welfare charities, pet keepers, hobbyist groups and educational establishments.
Its primary aim is to develop consensus positions on matters involving companion animal welfare to inform Parliamentarians, officials, regulators and enforcement agencies. This helps ensure that new and existing regulation is appropriate, proportionate and reflects the input from as many stakeholders as possible.
Some of the work CASC has carried out in recent years includes:
- Provided a detailed response to the call for evidence regarding primate keeping
- Collected data and provided feedback to DEFRA for the Licensing of Activities Involving Animals post implementation review
- Investigated the efficacy of different methods of improving welfare, including the use of restricted keeping (positive lists)
- Worked to develop guidance for one day pet sales events to standardise and protect welfare
- Assisted with issues involving salmonella infections of imported reptile foods.
- Provided feedback on potential welfare issues caused by post Brexit border controls and the new Target Operating Model
- Provided a stakeholder review with recommendations of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act
- Provided feedback on issues involving border controls of pet birds
- Provided input into invasive species and CITES teams to assist policy development
- Provided rapid information feedback to ad hoc enquiries
The engagement forum allows the opportunity to engage with stakeholders and other officials to hear updates, see the welfare related work of CASC members and take part in stakeholder roundtable discussions of current topics in an open and constructive environment. It is the only event which brings together such a wide range of diverse companion animal stakeholders and so is a key opportunity to gain an insight into these diverse opinions.
This year’s event will be divided into three sections:
Starting at 10.30am, the morning session will consist of five short 10 minute presentations from the CASC chair, CASC working groups and invited speakers. Mr Peter Laurie, AHWBE director will be speaking about his role and how this engages with CASC, with two further speakers to be confirmed.
A buffet lunch with refreshments will allow time to informally engage with CASC members and see examples of the important welfare work they do. There will also be a short presentation from The Lord Trees.
The afternoon session will be a series of round-table discussions covering some key current topics. The discussion topics will be:
- Issues with unregulated pet sales, particularly the internet trade of live animals, giving live animals as prizes and private sales.
- Issues with the breeding of pets with deleterious genes. This is an ongoing issue with dogs but with more and more pets being selectively bred it is an emerging issue for other companion animal species.
- Improving pet welfare. Welfare is a complex topic and there are many ways to improve it. Can restricting the types of animal kept be effective, or is education a better tool?
- Primate licensing guidance. We hope that the latest version of the proposed licensing guidance will be available for discussion and comment with private primate keepers.
- Licensing of activities Involving Animals regulations: The post implementation review has now been published and so it is important that future work is identified and actioned. This might include reviewing the current guidance, changes to the regulations or extending scope to include one day sales meetings and rescue and rehoming operations.
If you would like to attend all or part of the day then let the CASC secretariat, Dave Perry, know by emailing him at secretariat@casc.org.uk. Dave will also be able to help if you have any questions about the event or venue.

The British Independent Retailers Association has expressed concern over the latest figures from the BRC-NIQ Shop Price Index for February 2025.
Speaking about the report, which can be downloaded from the BRC website, Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, said while overall shop prices remain in deflation, the rise in food prices is worrying for retailers and consumers alike.
Also reported:
- Shop price inflation was unchanged at -0.7% year on year in February, against a decline of -0.7% in January. This is above the 3-month average of -0.8%.
- Non-Food inflation decreased to -2.1% year on year in February, against a decline of -1.8% in January. This is in line with the 3-month average of -2.1%.
- Food inflation increased to 2.1% year on year in February, against growth of 1.6% in January. This is above the 3-month average of 1.8%.
- Fresh Food inflation increased to 1.5% year on year in February, against growth of 0.9% in January. This is above the 3-month average of 1.2%.
- Ambient Food inflation increased to 2.8% year on year in February, against growth of 2.5% in January. This is above the 3-month average of 2.7%.
Andrew Goodacre, Bira CEO said: "The retail market is showing a split with essential categories such as food showing inflation and the non-essential sectors having to reduce prices (deflation) to drive sales. It is well known in retail that higher inflation in essentials (food, utilities and petrol are all increasing) has a disproportionate impact on consumer confidence and significantly reduces demand for the non-essential items.
"The extra costs for employers and the 140% increase in business rates from April will add to inflation and continue to damage the wider high street supported by independent retailers."
Helen Dickinson OBE, Chief Executive, British Retail Consortium, said: "While shop prices remained in deflation in February, prices on the month saw the biggest increase in the last year. Breakfast, in particular, got more expensive as butter, cheese, eggs, bread and cereals all saw price hikes. Climbing global coffee prices could threaten to push the morning costs higher in the coming months. In non-food, month on month prices rose as January Sales promotions ended, especially in electricals and furniture. But discounting is still widespread in fashion as retailers tried to entice customers against a backdrop of weak demand.
"Inflation will likely rise across the board as the year progresses with geopolitical tensions running high and the imminent £7bn increase in costs from the Autumn Budget and the new poorly designed packaging levy arriving on the doorsteps of retailers. We expect food prices to be over 4% up by the second half of the year. If Government wants to keep inflation at bay, enable retailers to focus on growth, and help households, it must mitigate the swathe of costs facing the industry. It can start by ensuring no shop ends up paying more than they already do under the new business rates proposals, and delaying the new packaging taxes."

Few people would expect to see Bull Terriers racing in Canicross…and even more amazing is that 13-year-old Ashton Moore and young brother Hartley are racing them!
CSJ’s Ceri was intrigued to hear from their father Tom that the boys are following in his footsteps with the family dogs, Helga the Bull Terrier, Basil the Bull Terrier, Jorge and Jaxon the German Shepherds and sometimes with other owners’ spare dogs.
Ashton had started at only 6years old joining in with his dad, with his ageing GSD. He said: “We had to both be attached to Jorge as he was 48kg and I was 22! Those beginner runs enabled Jorge to still do a little bit, and myself to get hooked on Canicross.”
Hartley commented: “I had occasionally joined dad and Ashton on Canicross runs but always preferred mountain biking to running so once I discovered Bikejor I determined to switch to that as soon as I was old enough.”
He added that his most memorable success is “entering my first race, and winning it. Extra special was that I used Helga, the Bull Terrier, in her first ever event. Dad sent me and Helga out with the aim for getting some experience in our first event. Winning was a bonus!”
He then entered the local round of the BSSF National Championships, borrowing a more experienced dog and competing against boys 3-4 years older. With times much closer to the older lads than anyone expected Hartley caught the attention of a former BSSF champion, who’s now mentoring him.
Meanwhile Ashton recently got his first junior win, with a borrowed dog and had a top half finish competing against adults in a 5k race.
He already had lots of podiums in junior races, often racing with the older dogs that his dad wasn’t racing or someone else’s spare.
He added: “This experience of running many different breeds, running dynamics, fast dogs, reluctant dogs, reactive dogs, has really generated a reputation for myself as somebody who can handle dogs. This has paid off this year as I’ve been loaned fast dogs, plus dad is letting me have the faster of our dogs (Helga) now we finally have two young dogs.”
There’s more to read about Ashton, Hartley and Tom on CSJ’s www.csjk9.com
including the family’s hosting of Barn Hunt events – Ceri said: “Owners in all canine sports use our products, but we had to ask what that is.”

Pharmall Country Store, a long-standing family-run pet food supply business in Harrogate, has been put up for sale as the owner plans for retirement.
Located on Moorlands Farm since 2000, is positioned at one of the busiest junctions on the outskirts of Harrogate, benefitting from significant local and passing trade.
Additionally, the business is adjacent to a large residential development area offering substantial potential for increased local sales.
Originally rooted in the farm supply industry, the business has evolved under the second generation of ownership into a more consumer-focused enterprise, offering a variety of pet food and accessories, wild bird food, equine feed and bedding, smallholder supplies, and veterinary and farm products. The business also offers a delivery service, both locally via its own vans, and nationally through couriers.
Pharmall is currently owned by Robert Harper and family. Robin is now selling the business as he plans to retire. The sale is being marketed by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co.
Robert Harper said: “After 34 wonderful years running Pharmall Ltd – the family business – I have decided to sell up. This decision has been incredibly tough to make, the staff I’ve employed over the years and the wonderful customers have made coming to work a pleasure. However, due to the recent passing of my father who established the business 40 years ago, I feel the time is right to step back to enjoy retirement with my wife whilst we are both still in good health.
“It has been an incredible journey, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved. I am confident that a new buyer will bring fresh energy and ideas to take the business forward, and continue to serve our loyal customers with the same dedication and passion.”
Business agent Steve Riley, who is handling the sale at Christie & Co, commented: “This is an exceptional opportunity for a new owner to acquire this well-regarded, family-run business in the bustling town of Harrogate. The business enjoys a brilliant reputation and is heavily relied upon by locals due to its needs-based nature, and it offers an ideal platform for an existing operator to take the business forward and build upon the excellent current trading position.”
According to the details of the sale on Christie & Co’s website https://www.christie.com/5417042/, the business:
- Turns over YE 30 June 2024: £1,107,939
