The 20-year-old boss of a growing pet food business has featured in an episode of ‘Young, Welsh & Pretty Minted’ shown on BBC Three.

The series follows young Welsh entrepreneurs finding success through a variety of unconventional means.

It is no surprise that Wales’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year winner Callum Griffiths, owner of Clydach Farm, was selected,

Callum began the pet food business venture at just 13-years-old, and the programme follows the story of his rapidly expanding pet food business.

The episode documents the process of Clydach Farm’s food for dogs, from sourcing partnerships with ethical producers to packing and delivering award-winning recipes to 13 countries.

Clydach’s range of high meat, digestible recipes support UK farming and agriculture by not only sourcing the best ingredients, but by building lasting relationships with farmers across the British Isles.

The episode of ‘Young, Welsh and Pretty Minted’ aired on Sunday 23rd February and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Click here to view. Callum’s story begins about six minutes into the programme

The owners of innovative pet product company Groomi, which supplies a unique grooming tool for dogs, cats and horses, are set to appear in the new series of Dragons’ Den when the hit TV programme returns to BBC2 next month.

Husband-and-wife team Chris and Charlotte Wright will be seen entering the Dragons’ Den on Sunday, March 8, as they make a pitch for investment.

“Although we produce a fairly unique product, we never dreamed that our application to appear on the show would be accepted,” said Charlotte.

“But when we were told that we would appear we were both excited. The whole process took a lot of planning and it was nerve-wracking.”

Charlotte said she made the pitch for investment in the Dragons’ Den while Chris handled the numbers side of their presentation.

But she remained tight-lipped of how Groomi was received by the Dragons. To find out tune in to BBC2 on Sunday, March 8.

Two young entrepreneurs set out ambitious pet plans

Two young entrepreneurs from Devon have set out ambitious plans for the growth of their budding pet treat company, Aniimal Industries Ltd.

With their eyes firmly set on global expansion, these producers of natural pet treats for dogs, wild birds, caged birds and small animals are looking to expand their retail trade and wholesale base in the UK and overseas as well as introducing a new range of vegan pet treats for dogs.

Tom Robinson and his partner Tammy Francis set up the business in January 2019 and have already hit the ground running securing one large customer who is selling into Pets at Home all over the UK. They are also supplying a growing number of independent retailers with their own brand of dog treats called Tayla’s Kitchen, together with other ranges for birds and small animals.

Tom said: “Myself and Tammy Francis have worked and been around animals all of our lives. I worked in the pet trade for over 10 years in multiple roles and Tammy, as an experienced dog walker and trainer. She is also a big supporter of an animal rescue charity fostering dogs at her home until they are found new loving families.

"Our pets at the moment are Tayla, the Borador who was our first pet together as a couple and the inspiration of Tayla's Kitchen. Then we have Peg, the Border Collie who we rescued from a very bad situation giving her a new life in the Devon countryside. Finally we have Hugo our indoor rabbit who helps us develop our small animal range.

“We manufacture all of our treats with human grade ingredients and no hidden nasties in our own bakery on the farm. We try to ensure all of our treats have extra benefits such as turmeric for joint pain, tuna for dogs with sensitive tummies etc. and we package our products into environmentally friendly paper bags and our labels are printed with water based inks.”

Aniimal Industries Ltd. has recently invested £100K in a bespoke automated seed and grass treat production line which will enable the business to develop vegan dog treats which is a growing trend in the pet food and pet treat markets. They are hoping to also expand own label products to other pet food manufacturers and grow the business further in the UK and overseas particularly focussing on the USA and Asia with a range of unique products.

Major vet business in ‘real’ living wage pledge

Vets Now is pledging to pay all of its staff more than the 'real' living wage. It’s understood they are the first major veterinary business in the UK to make this promise. Animal care assistant, Jody Reynolds (pictured) said the decision will make a real difference to her life...

Vets Now is pledging to pay all of its staff more than the 'real' living wage.

It’s understood they are the first major veterinary business in the UK to make this promise.

Salaries for around a third of the pet emergency firm's 1280 employees, who work in vital roles such as receptionists and animal care assistants, are set to increase to at least £9.50 an hour from April, with the remaining workers already earning a higher sum.

This follows a recommendation from the Living Wage Foundation, who offer independent advice to employers, and say £9.30 has become the real cost of living.

The real living wage is significantly higher than the Government-set national living wage of £8.72 for people aged 25 and over.

Vets Now’s chief executive Mark Ross said: “Our people are our biggest asset and at the heart of everything we do. We want to properly recognise the vital role each and every one of them plays in the business.

“This move demonstrates our commitment to that. We are confident that by paying all of our staff a competitive hourly rate of at least 20p more than the real living wage we will achieve higher morale and lower turnover.”

Animal care assistant, Jody Reynolds, who works in Vets Now out-of-hours clinic in Kirkcaldy, said the decision to pay staff the real living wage will make a real difference to her life.

She added: “It’s amazing that Vets Now has been able to increase salaries to not only meet but exceed the real living wage. The extra will really help towards the cost of everyday living and even allow a few luxuries.”

Her views were echoed by Julie Orrock, a call handler at Vets Now’s out-of-hours contact centre in Dunfermline. She said: "It’s great that Vets Now is committing to paying above the real living wage. It’ll have a real impact on my life, allowing me to do more with friends and family in my spare time and to treat myself every now and again.”

Once the change comes into force on April 1, Vets Now will seek membership of the Real Living Wage Foundation. Almost 6000 employers have already signed up to increase their pay to real living wage levels, including football clubs, banks and retailers.

Where applicable, Vets Now staff based in London and the south-east of England will receive regional allowances to bring their salaries up to real living wage levels for those areas.

Recent research by KPMG found that around 19% of jobs in the UK pay less than the real living wage. At 23%, Northern Ireland had the highest proportion, while south-east England had the lowest at 15%.

PDSA has been named as one of the best companies to work for in the country. The UK’s leading veterinary charity, which provides free and low-cost treatment to poorly and injured pets, was included in the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Not-for-Profit Companies to Work for in the UK.

PDSA has been named as one of the best companies to work for in the country.

The UK’s leading veterinary charity, which provides free and low-cost treatment to poorly and injured pets, was included in the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Not-for-Profit Companies to Work for in the UK.

The Best Companies’ list celebrates and showcases the very best in workplace engagement.

PDSA, which employs around 2,000 people across 48 Pet Hospitals and more than 120 retail stores across the UK, was presented with an award from BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker at an awards ceremony in London.

Organisations from across the country took part in The Best Companies employee engagement survey, where employees are asked to rate the organisation they work for. Those results then form the Sunday Times Top 100 lists. Whilst the average employee response rate is less than 50%, more than three quarters (75%) of PDSA staff gave their feedback.

Jan McLoughlin, Director General of PDSA said: “We are immensely proud that PDSA has made the Sunday Times Top 100 list.

“This was our first year taking part in the Best Companies programme, so to make the list speaks volumes about both our culture and staff, who all play their part in making PDSA such a fantastic organisation.

“Without our people, we couldn’t deliver the great work we do as a charity. That’s why we’re really passionate about being a great place to work, where people feel connected with what we do, and where they feel they can make a real difference. Whilst we are delighted to be included in the list, we know that there’s much more we can do and we’ll be working with our teams to make sure that we’re always listening and learning so we can continue to be a great place to work.”

PDSA was ranked number 85 in the 2020 Sunday Times Best 100 Not-for-Profit Companies list – and was also given special ‘Ones to Watch’ status by Best Companies which means the organisation has good levels of employee engagement.

Royal Canin focuses on start of life

Royal Canin is putting its focus on Start of Life Puppy and Kitten foods from March to June, backed with a variety of activities designed to engage with pet owners and drive footfall in to the specialist pet trade, and encourage them to keep coming back...

The ultimate goal for any business is to keep a customer, ideally for life. That’s why Royal Canin is putting its focus on Start of Life Puppy and Kitten foods from March to June, backed with a variety of activities designed to engage with pet owners and drive footfall in to the specialist pet trade, and encourage them to keep coming back.

Royal Canin retail marketing manager Ben Hurley says: “Focussing on the Start of Life stage is one of the most important ways of driving category growth due to the potential lifetime value of each customer. Converting new puppy and kitten owners to the specialist sector from the very early days is the key to keeping that customer’s loyalty throughout the pet’s life.

“It is also a way of making sure puppies and kittens receive great nutrition right from the very start which helps to support health long term.”

Royal Canin will use digital media to reach 3.5 million pet owners, providing information and education. Brand awareness will be driven via video content and social media activity, driving new pet owners to the Royal Canin website and hence to the specialist pet trade.  A bespoke Kitten hub will support first time kitten owners.  The combination is expected to result in 50,000 visits to the website.

Approximately 900,000 puppies and 600,000 kittens go to new homes in the UK every year, many of them to first time owners. Royal Canin says that each single pet represents a fantastic opportunity for the specialist pet trade, especially as the specialist sector is a fantastic source of advice and recommendation on how and what to feed a new pet.

“With many new pet owners shopping exclusively in grocery (70% of cat owners only shop there for example), Royal Canin is putting together a variety of activities to provide a unique, engaging and educational experience so that we can bring more customers to your stores,” says Ben Hurley.

“Shopper research shows that pet owners will spend 40% more over the lifetime of their pet in the specialist pet trade if this is where their first purchase is made, because of the relationship built up between retailer and owner.  In fact, the first year of a pet’s life is when owners are most engaged, doing the most research and most in need of education and advice – so this is the key time to engage these customers and establish a relationship based on trust.”

Royal Canin research also shows that there is a need for more education around nutrition – 35% of kitten owners and 28% of puppy owners feed adult foods right from the start, and also tend to transition to an adult food at around eight months of age, when there is a temptation to add pet food to their grocery shop.

“This is clearly not putting the animal’s needs first, and nor does it enable the specialist pet sector to maximise the opportunity,” comments Ben Hurley.

“We have the ability to do the right thing for the pets and for our specialist pet trade partners by educating pet owners about the specific needs of kittens and puppies, and the importance of feeding age specific foods.”

Puppy and kitten owners are high value customers, with a typical Royal Canin puppy or kitten owner spending £200-£300 on food alone in the first year of life.  Owners will spend more on their pets during the first year too, so items like toys and accessories are also a significant opportunity for the specialist pet trade.

Royal Canin’s Start of Life campaign centres around supporting retailers in creating engaging displays in store, with digital media to specifically target new pet owners with the ambition to drive them in to store.

For retailers who want to be involved in the activity, Royal Canin have developed a range of in store point of sale that can be used on and off shelf to create noise around puppy and kitten displays. In addition, Puppy and Kitten packs are also available for a limited time,

worth over £25 and retailing at £6.99 for pet owners to purchase in store.  This will encourage pet owners to convert to the specialist pet trade, and continue buying for their puppy or kitten with the trade.

Ben Hurley sums up: “With 1.5 million new puppies and kittens arriving in homes every year, we are putting major effort and investment into bringing these new pet owners into the specialist pet trade, with a view to delivering these shoppers a quality service and optimum nutrition for the whole of their pet’s life.”

Bestpets has produced a new 32-page brochure called Destination Frozen, which showcases the full range of frozen products available from the company. The brochure is packed with category and product information from top suppliers along with Freezer Deals.

Peter Brame, Director of Trading – Pet, said: "Our new Destination Frozen brochure has been designed, with the help of our supplier partners, to help and advise customers about this growing category and the ranges available.

"The brochure was never intended to shout about price but more for retailers to use to feel confident about stocking frozen products in their stores. We know frozen is an exciting category with massive growth potential and we want to help our retailers capitalise on this developing trend.

"As a business, to show our commitment to frozen, to our customers and suppliers, we’ve increased the number of freezers in our depots and added frozen container units for our delivered operation."

Suppliers who are working with Bestpets are equally enthusiastic about the new brochure.

Mark Lewis, Managing Director – Cotswold RAW, said "‘Cotswold RAW has seen strong growth over the three years we have been working together, as raw has become a must have category for the independent retailer. Bestpets commitment to raw dog food has been reinforced with this exciting initiative, and we are looking forward to working closely with Bestpets to make this a success."

Emma McKenzie, UK Key Account Manager - Natures Menu, added: "Natures Menu are very proud to work with Bestpets on this raw journey.  We have worked together for over 15 years and seen many changes in feeding trends and the raw and raw inspired category.  Raw and natural feeding continues to grow with many consumers wanting good wholesome fresh ingredients to ensure optimum health and nutrition for their pets."

Ryan Winwright, Trade Manager – Nutriment RAW, commented:  "Nutriment is very pleased to announce its new partnership with Bestpets. This exciting opportunity allows us to reach new trade customers who are seeking a larger range of raw products, whilst providing an additional route to market for our existing trade network. Nutriment’s proven track record in its work to increase footfall and grow gross sales within the independent retailers, and its priority to make innovative raw feeding solutions widely available across the UK means it has become the fastest growing raw brand in the trade in the last 4 years. By supplying through Bestpets we gain additional benefits such as another secure delivery method, lower minimum orders for trade and the ability to drive sales.

"Bestpets have shown that their infrastructure and expertise to support the trade fits extremely well with the Nutriment ethos. Their drive to become the number one frozen pet food wholesaler, teamed with their ability to supply frozen product means that end users will now have even more choice when it comes to what they feed to their pets. We are excited to support Bestpets with their latest developments and look forward to our relationship growing from strength to strength.’

Superpaw model fashion brunch in aid of charity

London Dog Week has brought back its much-loved runway fashion show, although for the first time, dogs will get to impress a panel of judges in a competition at this year’s SuperPaw Model Fashion Brunch...

London Dog Week has brought back its much-loved runway fashion show, although for the first time, dogs will get to impress a panel of judges in a competition at this year’s SuperPaw Model Fashion Brunch.

London Dog Week headquarters received hundreds of applications for the Superpaw Model competition and had to review dog cuteness and amazing canine talent as part of its selection process. Those finally selected will be able to strut their stuff on the Dog Walk at Chucs Restaurant, the beautifully designed extension to the Serpentine Gallery in the heart of Hyde Park, London.

In total, 20 dogs have made the final selection to walk the runway, including breeds such as Weimeraner, Daschunds, Cockapoos, Toy Pomeranian Huskeys and Chihauhas who all will be chaperoned by their owners as they compete for the winning prize.

The Superpaw Model Fashion Brunch will be divided into two sessions, 11am – 1am and 3pm – 5pm to give time for the likes of ‘Cardi B’, ‘Mochi Bailey Bear’ ‘Pablo’ ‘Dexter’ and ‘Pepperoni’ to compete with other paw friends with equally cool names for the world’s first SuperPaw Model Crown.

The winner will be announced at London Dog Week’s hotly anticipated event, The Pet Gala, the canine version to the Met Gala where the cream of tail-wagging glamour will all be in the same venue, Atmosphere London, promising panoramic views of the capital.

London Dog Week has, for the first time launched its own pup up boutique where you can shop the brands straight from the dog walk and into your dog’s wardrobe!  Now you can get the latest dog fashion trends all year round.

Hearing Dogs will be the official charity this year where all ticket sales will contribute towards placing specially bred and trained dogs into homes for those affected by hearing loss from children to adults.

Hearing Dog’s marketing director, David Robson says: “The dogs bring a new lease of life to people who are deaf or who have hearing loss, and their families.  Loneliness, anxiety and avoidance of any kind of personal and social engagement is unfortunately common in those affected, since the loss of hearing can make it difficult to communicate easily with others.  A hearing dog not only helps deaf people by alerting them to important sounds such as the fire alarm, they also invite social interaction back into their environment as dogs have a natural way of opening up their owner’s community network.  We are really happy to be London Dog Week’s official partner who understands the impact dogs can have on the mental wellbeing of the owner and those around them."

To round it all up, the SuperPaw Model Brunch will include:

  • Superpaw Model Fashion Show and Competition
  • Pup Up Boutique
  • Delicious Brunch for dog and human
  • Judging Panel of Industry Experts
  • Dog trends for 2020

SuperPaw Model Fashion Brunch

Giving dogs the best in show treatment

When Crufts airs on our televisions this year (5th-8th March), some of the best-groomed pooches in the nation will be gracing our screens. Dr Jessica May, in-house vet at video vet app, FirstVet (www.firstvet.co.uk), has all the advice needed to keep petst at peak performance.

When Crufts airs on our televisions this year (5th-8th March), some of the best-groomed pooches in the nation will be gracing our screens.

Grooming is not just for the dogs taking to the stage next month, though; it also plays an essential part in keeping them healthy overall. From clipping their nails to brushing their coats, a bit of pampering is an essential part of maintaining your dog’s overall health.

Regardless of whether your dog is best in show, or prefers to stay at home, care and attention can prevent a range of health issues, such as conjunctivitis and skin irritation.

Dr Jessica May, in-house vet at video vet app, FirstVet (www.firstvet.co.uk), has all the advice needed to keep petst at peak performance.

Nail clipping

If a dog’s nails aren’t clipped regularly, it can cause pain and problems whilst walking. When clipping your dog’s nails, try to angle the clippers so as to keep the shape of the nail. There is a blood vessel towards the base of the nail called the 'quick’, so be careful and don’t clip your dog’s nails too short. You can see the sensitive pink quick in dogs with clear nails, but the quick will not be visible in dogs with black nails. If you do cut the quick, it will cause bleeding - try to keep your dog calm if this happens. Applying styptic powder to the affected area should stop any bleeding within a few minutes, although a vet should be contacted if the bleeding continues for longer than this. The best way to avoid the quick growing too far into the nail is regular clipping each month. This keeps the quick short and reduces the risk of bleeding; consistency is key.

Some dogs may become scared or irritable when faced with a pet pedicure, so make sure to watch out for any signs of discomfort. If you really struggle to keep your dog calm enough to clip their nails, it may be best to have a professional groomer show you the ropes.

Tooth brushing

Chew toys and good quality dry food may help to keep your dog’s mouth healthy, but dogs still need their teeth to be brushed at least two or three times a week to maintain a show-stopping smile. You can use a dog toothbrush or finger toothbrush to clean your dog’s teeth, while being careful not to hurt their gums. It is important to use a specialist dog toothpaste, rather than a human one, as many kinds of human toothpaste contain xylitol, which can cause a dangerous drop in a dogs’ blood sugar if they ingest it.

Cleaning eyes, ears and paws

Keeping your dog’s eyes clean is the best way to avoid eye infections. If your dog has long hair, make sure that its luscious locks are not hanging over its eyes. The same goes for the ears. If you notice any redness around, or any discharge from, the eyes or ears of your dog, it  could be a sign of infection - ask your vet's advice as soon as you can if your dog is showing any of these signs.

Finally, healthy paws are key to keeping your dog moving like a champion. This means that you should undertake regular checks of your dog’s paws, looking for objects stuck in the paw, or any redness or peeling. Try to keep the hair around your dog’s pads fairly short, as this helps the paws to retain their grip and stay clean.

Fur trimming and brushing

Brushing your dog’s fur is important to keep them clean and free from irritants to their skin. Depending on the type of fur your dog has, they may need to be brushed every week or every day to keep them properly coiffured and prevent matting. A variety of brushes are available for different fur-types, whether they have the flowing coat of an Afghan Hound or the short and sleek fur of a Dachshund, so you should be able to find the right equipment to match your dog’s needs.

Bathing

Dogs should be bathed around once every three months but bear in mind that dogs with skin problems or a penchant for the outdoors may need to bathe more regularly. Always avoid applying water directly to the eyes, ears, or nose of your dog: using a wet washcloth is a good way to avoid any mishaps in these areas. Also, it is important to use a specialist dog shampoo, as human shampoos can contain irritants to pets.

These are some of the essentials for ensuring that your pet is in top form all year round, but if you have any questions or queries, seeking a vet’s advice is the best way to better understand how to keep your pet looking best in show.

Norwich-based disability employer, Norfolk Industries for Disabled People, has had a run of success during February, receiving awards for its products at two of the UK’s major trade shows.

The company’s colour-in Small Animal House product was a finalist at the Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year 2020 awards at the NEC Birmingham on 2nd February, taking home a Highly Commended in the Pet Gift category.

The awards took place at the Spring Fair retail trade exhibition and the entries were reviewed by over 40 judges, all buyers and key influencers for the home and giftware industry making it a great way to get your products in front of the right people.

Factory manager, Sharon Tooke, received the award at an evening ceremony where all the finalists’ products were displayed together.

The following weekend saw Norfolk Industries triumph again, this time receiving recognition for its ‘Nibble and Nest’ product which was awarded New Product Showcase winner at PATS Sandown.

‘Nibble and Nest’ was developed in-house at Norfolk Industries and is an innovative product designed to promote natural scavenging behaviours and provide animal enrichment for mice, gerbils and hamsters. The product, which consists of small nests with treats hidden inside, has proved popular with hamsters, receiving favourable reviews from testers, and is part of Norfolk Industries plastic-free range, so it is also good for the environment.

Factory manager, Sharon Tooke said: “It is just a wonderful achievement to now win a second award this year for the development of our new products.

"We try to develop new products specifically taking our staff and people on work placements abilities into consideration as any product needs to be relatively uncomplicated to produce. To then gain awards for these products from the judges on their merits to the pet sector is a dream come true!

"Again, it is hoped that this award will raise the profile of Norfolk Industries across the country and ultimately any business growth created by the award and our attendance at PATS will directly contribute to the employment of people with disabilities or the provision of work placements to those who wish to get closer to employment but need support to do so.”

A revolutionary new way of freshening up dogs without water called Quick Wash has become an instant hit, winning  the Best New Grooming Product at PATS Sandown for Wilshire-based company Aqueos.

Tracy Richards, founder and brain-child behind Aqueos said: “Quick Wash is the latest product to be added to our range of Anti-Bacterial Dog Shampoos. It is ideal to clean or freshen up in-between baths or any other situations such as muddy walks where water is unavailable.

"It will also be useful for dogs who just do not enjoy bathing, for people who may find it difficult to lift their dog into the bath or for use in the winter months.”

With no water required Quick Wash is a foam which is applied to the dog’s coat or face and then towel dried.  It can be used for all over cleaning or just for dirty areas.  As well as a cleaning foam it also includes the Aqueos water based deodorising technology. The range of Aqueos shampoos for dogs are both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and are an effective deodoriser.  They help to combat itchiness, soothe minor skin irritations and are gentle on the skin, leaving the coat soft . They can be used on minor skin wounds and are alcohol and phenol free.  Quick Wash is available in 250 ml size pump sprays for easy use.

The winners of the PATS Sandown 2020 New Product Awards, sponsored by pbwnews, were chosen by a team of expert pet retailers. Their decisions took into account a number of guideline criteria such as product innovation, design, quality, packaging, value for money and sustainability.

The judges agreed that the New Product Showcase had produced a high calibre of entries with a tremendous amount of innovation. They were pleased to see such a wide range of products, and felt the majority of items on display showed some great innovation.

The Awards were presented to the winners by Justine Thompson, editor of pbwnews, and show organiser Gordon Thomas.

Commenting on Quick Wash, the judges said: “This had a nice fresh smell and useful properties for the pet owner concerned about health and hygiene. This one would fly off the shelves.”=

A ‘successful and lucrative’ pet store has been put up for sale with a guide price of £235,000 as the owners wish to pursue new business interests.

The sale of Posh Pets in Holt, Norfolk, is being handled by agents Hilton Smythe, who describe the business as a traditional pet shop offering pet supplies and essentials.

Posh Pets had a dog grooming parlour up until recently which could be reinstated if required.

The business sells a wide range of items for household pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, fish and wild birds.

Hilton Smythe state that due to pet shop closures in the surrounding area, Posh Pets has more custom than before and still retains its Holt customer base.

The agents also say:  “Posh Pets is a profitable business, however, there is scope for development by considering the following: improving the website to become an E-commerce site; and adding to current lines being sold.”

Posh Pets generated an advised turnover of circa £174,000 as of the 2017 accounts. The assets in the business are worth in the region of £10,000.

Hilton Smythe highly advise early viewing to avoid disappointment. The full details can be found by clicking here.

Travel and behaviour categories are top dogs, says Vital

Marketing and analysis experts at Vital Pet Group have revealed that both the behaviour and travel categories are currently in growth, with pet owners looking for a range of solutions in these areas...

With the world's greatest dog show, Crufts, on the horizon Vital Pet Group has been looking at some of the top trends for dog products and is alerting owners to the best opportunities.

It's marketing and analysis experts say that both the behaviour category and travel are currently in growth, with pet owners looking for a range of solutions in these areas.

\According to Statista, holiday trends are increasingly towards short breaks and staycations - with 74% reporting they intended to take a short break within the UK and 44% intended to take their main holiday in the UK - up 6% on the previous year.

Heather McManus, Sales and Marketing Director at Vital Pet Group says sales will always mirror customer needs and a lot of category growth is also being driven by the humanisation trend.

"Where I go my dog goes, seems to be the motto and that means using guards, harnesses, seat covers and the like for safe travel - as well as stake outs and foldable dog bowls to use once the destination is reached. And of course, if you want to bring the dog along with you to pubs, shops or beaches they need to be well behaved; so we're seeing an increase in headcollars that help prevent pulling, clickers and training discs and even sophisticated retrieval toys for pet owners who have got the bug and want to take training to the next level."

Vital is now stocking the Mikki Training range which includes training aids endorsed by Claire Arrowsmith, Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) Registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB). The range includes WalkRite headcollars, TravelRite crates and harnesses and BehavRite training aids. The Vital team is delighted to have recently onboarded this exciting range.

The travel category also includes the RAC range - a high quality brand that is synonymous with safe travel, ensuring that retailers have a great choice of products for the upcoming Easter break.

Vital also reports that both natural and eco trends have a strong influence on purchasing. The wholesaler started the year with a number of eco pledges which include alerting retailers to the best selling eco products and a commitment to onboarding at least 100 new eco and green products. It reports that good progress towards that goal has already been made with 17 new eco products being listed in 2020.

Retailers can see the latest new products at www.vitalpets.co.uk or can call on the expertise of their account manager on 01837 883 000 to find out what is selling through.
